Victims still being identified after what Sweden’s PM says was the worst mass shooting in the country’s history
Police have said 11 people have been killed and six others taken to hospital after a campus shooting in the southern Swedish city of Örebro
in what Sweden’s prime minister has described as the worst mass shooting in the country’s history
said investigating officers were still in the process of identifying victims but that they believed the “primary perpetrator”
He said authorities had had “no prior warning signs” of the attack
which happened soon after 12.30pm local time on Tuesday at a campus housing an adult education centre and other learning facilities
and that it was believed the gunman acted alone
All six hospitalised people are adults, local authorities said. Five of them had gunshot wounds, one of whom has minor injuries.
Jonas Claesson, director of health and medical services in the Örebro region, said one of the patients was in a life-threatening condition.
Police said they had opened an investigation into murder, arson and an aggravated weapons offence.
which is about 125 miles (200km) west of Stockholm
as a “terrible act of violence” on a “very painful day for all of Sweden”
He said the government was in close contact with police and the operation was continuing
“My thoughts are [also] with all of those whose normal school day was turned into fear
Being locked up in a classroom fearing for your life is a nightmare no one should have to experience.”
Police should be allowed “the peace of mind they need to investigate what happened and how these horrific crimes could have occurred”
“This is the worst mass shooting in Swedish history,” he told reporters
as he urged people not to speculate about the motive
King Carl XVI Gustaf conveyed his condolences
“It is with deep sadness and dismay that my family and I received the news about the terrible atrocity in Örebro,” he said
Map locating the area of Sweden where the shooting took placeForest gave no further information about the injured
“The reason we cannot be more specific at this time is that the damage outcome is so great,” he said
Police had earlier said four people had had surgery and one was in a serious condition
Forest told an earlier media conference police had no indication of motive
“When it comes to saying anything more about the perpetrator
“The operation is ongoing and that will undoubtedly become clearer.”

School attacks are rare in Sweden but several serious incidents have taken place in recent years. In March 2022, an 18-year-old student stabbed two teachers to death at a high school in the southern city of Malmö

Police were unable to establish any ideological motivation
is the subject of debate in a country where anti-immigrant rhetoric has taken hold
By Anne-Françoise Hivert (Malmö (Sweden) correspondent)
Most of the 10 dead and six wounded in the worst mass shooting in Sweden's recent history were of foreign origin
The lack of any statement of motive suggests that this was the act of an unstable person
But the identity of the victims is fueling debate about a possible ideological motive
in a context marked by the rise of the far right and increasingly outspoken anti-foreigner rhetoric in the public arena
Almost nothing is known about the murderer

Sweden's Örebro is in shock after the shooting at an adult school that killed 11 people on Tuesday
"That something so terrible could have happened here." Mia Vallin can hardly grasp it
a private Christian primary and secondary school in Örebro - about 200 kilometres west of Stockholm
Her school is just two kilometres away from the Campus Risbergskaschool
a 35-year-old man opened fire; shot 11 people dead and wounded six others
Vallin was having lunch in the school canteen
"We suddenly saw all kinds of emergency services driving past our school at breakneck speed
who knew someone who was hiding from the gunman
I then got a message about the drama unfolding a little further down the road."
few details were known about the tragedy which unfolded a few streets away
Authorities instructed the Hannaskolan leadership to completely seal off the school building
Vallin: "We locked the doors and communicated to parents that their children were in safety
the students were picked up at school one by one by their fathers and mothers."
so precarious was the situation at Campus Risbergska
the school where a gunman roamed the corridors shooting people to death
lock them and hide," 35-year-old nursing student Hellen Werme told Swedish channel TV4 News
The tragedy is "the worst mass shooting in Sweden's history"
according to Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson
King Carl Gustaf laid flowers with his wife Queen Silvia at a memorial in front of the school on Wednesday and later attended a memorial service at a church in Örebro
The suspect is believed to have died by suicide
Police have released few details about the suspected gunman
Media paint a picture of a hermit from the area
Police assume that the suspect acted alone
Officers found him dead upon entering the school
Hannaskolan was open for classes again on Wednesday
"But we have to be careful," says Mia Vallin
"We pray that something like this will never happen again."

Sweden has become polyglot and cosmopolitan – but denial has met the wave of white supremacism sweeping the country
It was the worst mass shooting in Swedish history. Ten people were shot dead and many more wounded before the gunman shot himself. A week on from the atrocity in Örebro, about 125 miles west of Stockholm, Sweden is soul-searching for answers that are not easy to find
was initially described by authorities as “a lone wolf”
He may or may not have had an ideological motive
But we now also know that most of those killed had an immigrant background
And it is hard to believe that the target of this violence was not political: Campus Risbergska
many of whom were enrolled on a language programme called “Swedish for immigrants”
The centre is a remnant of the once vast nationwide public network of well-funded institutions for continuing education and after-school programmes to help recently arrived people to assimilate
Local people describe the centre as a warm and welcoming place for people who did not always feel an immediate sense of belonging in Örebro. The young poet Aya Kanbar took classes there
she recalled the institution in a moving article
“These were people who had immigrated from all corners of the world
and it was so nice to witness the sense of community among them
How the language brought them together – their Swedish
Their desire to belong to a society that is so often described as cold and alienating.” Now
we have no evidence that the Örebro killer explicitly targeted immigrants
the police sent out a statement claiming that nothing pointed to this
They said everything suggested he was a non-ideological killer
This drew heavy criticism from across the political spectrum – from leftwing columnists to conservative editorial writers
It would have been more honest of the police to say they simply didn’t know
and it is hardly far-fetched for experts on mass shootings to point out that many similar events have been committed by white supremacists – even when they were erroneously described as lone wolves initially
in which a man’s voice is heard shouting: “You should be gone from Europe”
We don’t know whether the voice is that of the killer
What we do know is that the massacre has left many immigrant communities in Sweden feeling terrified and vulnerable
Sweden has many other schools and education centres where young immigrants still get a chance to learn Swedish
Many of these students say they are too afraid to return to class
is anyone in elected office willing to openly address migrants’ fears
In one generation, Sweden has changed into a polyglot and cosmopolitan country, as ethnically diverse as the UK. In the same four decades, roughly encompassing my lifetime, we have also seen a terrifying wave of white supremacist violence, racist mass shootings and serial killers, often targeting immigrants
the rightwing nationalist Sweden Democrats tried to fit the massacre in Örebro into an existing narrative of chaos and crime enveloping the entire country
as though immigrants were somehow culpable
which relies on the support of the far right
focused its immediate response on gun laws and restricting access to semi-automatic weapons
has no vocabulary to talk about its problem with xenophobia
or the racist violence that often follows it
there is a deep bipartisan consensus that migrants are the problem
and that previous immigration policy was too generous
a woman came up to her and pleaded: “Can you please say something nice about immigrants now?” Other survivors of the attack
have told Swedish media that they have long felt like “moving targets” in an increasingly hostile and xenophobic country
The prime minister, probably responding to public pressure, addressed the nation in a televised speech on Sunday
in which he pleaded for unity: “At the end of the day
Not right or left.” It was a significant shift in tone but
where acts committed by white supremacists are “individualised”
whereas violent acts committed by racialised minorities lead to blanket blame of the entire group
One of the cruellest aspects of racism is precisely the way in which it turns victims into perpetrators
When refugees from Syria or Sudan escape war or violent terrorism
they arrive in countries where too many associate them with the very violence that they have fled
It is as though they have to carry the burden of the perpetrator’s crimes
The massacre in Örebro led to predictable calls for unity and solidarity in Sweden
but something more than that might be required
For everyone in Sweden to feel safe and harmonious
the dehumanisation of immigrants as a group must also stop
Martin Gelin writes for the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter
acted alone as they continue the work of identifying victims
The gun rampage that left 11 people dead in the Swedish city of Örebro was “a one-man operation”
as local media identified the shooter as a former student of the adult education centre he attacked
As Sweden reeled from the deadliest mass shooting in its history, investigators were working on Wednesday to identify the people who were killed and injured after the attack at Campus Risbergska just after 12.30pm on Tuesday.
Speaking at a press conference, the Örebro police chief, Roberto Eid Forest, said there was strong evidence to suggest that the suspected gunman, who was among the dead, had shot himself.
Media reports named him as Rickard Andersson, 35, a former student who lived locally, had attended some maths classes at Risbergska some years ago, and had been unemployed for a decade. Police did not confirm his identity but said the suspect had no known connection to criminal gangs. There was nothing, they said, to suggest he had acted on ideological grounds.
“We still believe that it is a one-man operation. We will return to the exact motives,” said Eid Forest.
Lars Bröms, the police’s head of operations for identification work, later said he hoped that all the victims would be identified within 48 hours but that in some cases they were still trying to reach the relatives.
1:19'Extremely shocked': Swedish king pays tribute to victims of Örebro shooting – video The Swedish prime minister, Ulf Kristersson; his justice minister, Gunnar Strömmer; and King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia visited the site of the school in Örebro on Wednesday afternoon, where they laid flowers, before attending a remembrance service.
“It’s horrible. It’s hard to take in the vastness,” he said, urging people not to speculate. “In time, we will get the answers, and then we can also draw conclusions.”
Eid Forest said the reason it took so long to inform the public about the death toll was the size of the school premises. “It took a very long time to search and ensure that we didn’t have any more injuries,” he said.
1:26Multiple people dead in 'worst mass shooting' in Swedish history – video reportJonas Claesson, the director of health and medical services for the Örebro region, said five of the six people admitted to hospital had initially life-threatening gunshot wounds and were now stable after undergoing surgery. Two of them were being treated in intensive care. A sixth person had minor injuries. Four were women and two, men.
Police urged anybody who was at the school on Tuesday or had footage of the attack to come forward. They asked the public to share only confirmed information.

Bishop Johan Dalman described “a city in shock
a country in shock” as he opened the service
“The queen and I are extremely shocked,” the king
“I think all of Sweden feels for those who have experienced this traumatic event … Many of us are helping and grieving with them
This is a terrible experience that Sweden has had to go through.”
The queen admitted she was “finding it a little bit difficult to talk”

what we are starting to see is civil society together with the municipality and police really rallying around for citizens of Örebro,” she said
She said Campus Risbergska mostly ran education courses for adults
Schools in the municipality had been training and practising for how to stop such an incident
“For a few years now we’ve been training on how schools should act to stop a lone actor
We’ve been training in that because we know it can happen.”

she said she felt a strong sense of unity there
“It created a feeling that we need to care about each other,” she said
‘We have to ensure that only the right people have guns in Sweden,’ says the prime minister
Sweden’s government has announced plans to strengthen its gun laws
including by restricting access to semi-automatic weapons
On Tuesday, a gunman killed 10 people at an education centre in Örebro
Police have not said what type of weapon he used but they have said he had a licence to own four weapons
“The horrific act of violence in Örebro raises several key questions about gun legislation,” the centre-right coalition government
which relies on the support of the far-right Sweden Democrats
it said it wanted to improve the way that people considered “medically unsuitable” for weapons possession were reported
“We have to ensure that only the right people have guns in Sweden,” Ulf Kristersson
On Friday police said identification was complete and that seven women and four men aged between 31 and 68 had died
They have not yet named the victims or the perpetrator
The Guardian understands that the victims include a Syrian man, an Eritrean woman and an Iranian woman. Police are investigating whether the shooting was racially motivated
are able to apply for licences for semi-automatic weapons
the environmental protection agency lifted a ban on military-style models
meaning guns such as the AR-15 were permitted for hunting
The government said on Friday it wanted to reimpose restrictions that existed before 2023 and develop a strategy to seize military-style weapons
“The AR-15 is an example of a weapon that is compatible with large magazines and can cause a lot of damage in a short time,” it said
The government said a recent report found that several of the requirements that should be taken into account when assessing a person’s suitability for a weapons permit were not clearly stated in weapons regulations
some medical factors and how law-abiding a person is
It also plans to add provisions on doctors’ reporting obligations in relation to weapons and the police’s ability to revoke permits
welcomed the government’s announcement but called for all weapons licences to be reviewed
It also said there should be a review of how registers between authorities were cross-checked
The decision has attracted public criticism from several high-profile Sweden Democrats
The Syrian embassy in Stockholm has said its citizens were among the dead

Some GIRLSCHOOL fans have expressed their concern after frontwoman Kim McAuliffe struggled to complete the band's set on Friday
In a video of the performance shared on YouTube courtesy of Johan Jansson
the 65-year-old McAuliffe could be seen wobbling on stage and appearing disoriented while her bandmates delivered their parts seemingly unaffected by her inability to keep her balance
Kim made her way to the back of the stage and sat on SAXON's drum riser
while a stage tech rushed over and removed her guitar from her shoulder
McAuliffe's disappointing performance in Örebro was discussed by fans in the official GIRLSCHOOL Facebook group
with one person — who apparently attended the concert — writing: "So sad to see what could have been a great night
Almost half of the tracks was skipped and ending on a sad note with an instrumental version of 'Bomber'"
the first fan responded: "Let's wait and see if there will be an official excuse or statement
As part of GIRLSCHOOL's ongoing European tour with SAXON
the two bands performed the following night (Saturday
In a 2016 interview with Headbangers Lifestyle
Kim talked about how touring had changed in the four decades since GIRLSCHOOL's formation
She said: "We have a few drinks here and there
but I can't do it anymore like we used to do anyway
So at one point we go back to the hotel and watch something on the iPad or so." Guitarist Jackie Chambers laughingly added: "Yeah
because it takes you two days to get over the last gig."
Chambers and McAuliffe were asked by Classic Rock magazine if GIRLSCHOOL has "a reputation as a heavy-drinking band"
Jackie responded: "You could say that." McAuliffe chimed in: "How on earth did anyone reach such a conclusion
It was all down to Lemmy [late MOTÖRHEAD frontman] and his bloody Special Brew
One of the worst stories was in Germany when our crew introduced us to Jägermeister and we lost two hours of our lives."
Chambers added: "I remember being somewhere in Europe at eight o'clock in the morning
Things are a bit more moderate now." McAuliffe concurred
It is not clear if McAuliffe's performance in Örebro on Friday was in any way related to alcohol consumption
during the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal scene in 1978 and is frequently associated with contemporaries and friends MOTÖRHEAD
They are the longest-running all-female rock band
still active and rocking hard after more than 40 years
Formed from a school band called PAINTED LADY by McAuliffe and Enid Williams
GIRLSCHOOL enjoyed strong media exposure and commercial success in the U.K
in the early 1980s with three albums of "punk-tinged metal" and a few singles
they concentrated their efforts on live shows and tours
reducing considerably the production of studio albums
During their long career GIRLSCHOOL toured all over the world
performing at many of the biggest rock and metal festivals as well as co-headlining with or supporting some of the most important hard rock and heavy metal bands in the genre
They maintain a worldwide cult following and are considered an inspiration for many succeeding female rock musicians
Original members McAuliffe and Denise Dufort are still in the band to this day
(Dufort is not taking part in the current tour while she is dealing with undisclosed issues with her hands
She is being temporarily replaced by Larry Paterson.) Original lead guitarist Kelly Johnson died of cancer in 2007 and was replaced by Chambers in 1999

Swedish police were quick to quash speculation that this was a terror attack mounted by a far-right
"There is currently nothing in the investigation to suggest that the perpetrator was acting under any ideological motivation," police spokesperson Fredrik Svedemyr said
local police chief Roberto Eid Forest qualified this
describing Andersson as "a motivated perpetrator"
But at a press conference on Thursday morning
We have seen all the film footage recorded
both externally and internally at the school
We are holding witness interviews with people with connections to the perpetrator to understand 'why did this happen?' and we don't yet have an answer."
It may take investigators weeks to establish Andersson's motive
It's also possible they will never be fully able to explain his actions
Bergqvist called for "patience" but the public
not to mention the families of the victims
In his first address to the nation after the atrocity
saying that this information would come out in good time
opposition parties have respected this request
Andersson's background and actions on the day of the shooting have been the focus of much attention ever since he was named by Swedish media as the gunman
Andersson struggled to achieve passing grades throughout his school career, with the Expressen newspaper reporting that he finished elementary school without a passing grade in a single subject
when he moved on to upper secondary school
or a "good pass" in aesthetic subjects (which mixes art
According to the Aftonbladet newspaper
studying maths at upper secondary level in 2021
but dropping out before completing the first course
Bergqvist mentioned this when discussing possible motives at Thursday's press conference
"What we can say is that there is information to suggest that he was connected to the school in some way
that he may have gone to the school earlier," she said
was something the police needed to "look into more deeply"
The Aftonbladet newspaper reported on Wednesday that one of the police's theories was that the attack was targeted at the local social services
The newspaper claimed that Andersson's benefits had recently been cut because the Swedish Public Employment Service had judged that he was not making enough effort to find a job
"He had had a fight with social services," a source told the newspaper
several employees from the social services were unaccounted for
what connection the Social Services department in Örebro has with Campus Risbergska
Some of the victims were of immigrant origin
All four of the victims whose nationalities have so far been confirmed in the media had an immigrant background: two from Syria
Campus Risbergska primarily taught courses where students tend to have an immigration background
vocational training for health and care workers
and primary and secondary level classes for adults
The broadcaster TV4 published a story on Wednesday night
based on a recording made by someone hiding from the attacker
Their sound technicians isolated a voice that they concluded was shouting Ni ska bort från Europa
At the press conference Bergqvist said that police had collected and were analysing recordings made during the attack
"We have received films where we are listening to the sound clips to try and determine what is being said
Is this something which could lead us to the right understanding of the motive?'"
or anti-Islamic motives have historically been active within extremist online groups
Police have said that they have yet to find evidence of this on electronic devices used by Andersson
questioned the reluctance of both police and politicians to consider this a racist attack
Police, they point out, have downplayed ideological motives in the past, for example after the knife attack at the Almedalen political festival in 2022
only for such motives to come to light later on
"When the police tone down the ideological motive
I and many others wonder what they actually mean," wrote Zina Al-Dewany in Aftonbladet
His target is a school where many are studying Swedish for Immigrants."
Her colleague Karin Pettersson argued that "the place is political, whatever the perpetrator's motive"
In the Sydsvenskan newspaper
the writer Nathan Hamelberg contrasted the reluctance to consider an ideological motive in this case with the rapidity with which political motives have been ascribed to attackers with an immigrant or Muslim background
who drove a stolen truck down Drottninggatan
"No one talks about Rakhmat Akilov as a lone madman
regardless of the extent to which he acted alone and how mad he actually was
his terror attack was immediately connected to a jihadi ideology," he said
Those calls by Swedish investigators for "patience" are appearing to go unheeded

Sweden's government has announced its intention to pursue a gun control reform law after an attack in the city of Örebro killed 11 people
The plan would include limiting access to powerful semi-automatic weapons
and strengthening suitability testing of individuals who want to obtain a gun license
A framework will also be developed to more effectively report people who may be medically unfit to possess firearms
Swedish news outlets identified the suspect of Tuesday's attack as Rickard Andersson
a 35-year-old who lived in Örebro and may have attended the adult education centre in which he opened fire
A relative of Andersson told the Aftonbladet tabloid that he was unemployed and had lost contact with family in recent years
Police officers — who have not formally identified the shooter — said the suspect was found with three weapons that were registered to his name
Lying next to him were large amounts of unused ammunition as well as gun licenses for four firearms
Swedish radio SVT said that the ongoing police investigation lists an automatic firearm as the weapon used
Gunfire erupted at around 12:30 CET at the Risbergska school
which according to its website offers classes to around 2,000 adults
Authorities said they sent a "major operation" to the school minutes after they were alerted
Nearby schools were locked down as parts of the Risbergska school were evacuated
Örebro's police chief Lars Wirén said during a press conference that officers confronted a chaotic scene with smoke filling the building and the gunman firing as many rounds as possible
He described the school as an "inferno" and said officers did not know if they were dealing with one or multiple attackers
At least six other adults were wounded in addition to those killed
remain in hospital according to local authorities — including two in the Intensive Care Unit
Police have so far declined to identify those killed in the attack
but the Syrian embassy in Stockholm said that its citizens were believed to be among the victims
said those killed were of "multiple nationalities
and that police were looking into whether there was evidence of a racist motive
The attack has sent shockwaves through Sweden
with the country's Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson calling it the "worst mass shooting in Swedish history"
Sweden had experienced at least two school attacks in the past decade — neither carried out with a gun
The country has strict gun laws with high application fees. Gun violence, however, has been on the rise, with police figures showing 391 incidents logged in 2022

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson says that the shooting at an adult education centre which killed about 10 people was the "worst mass shooting in Swedish history."
Speaking at a joint press conference with Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer, Kristersson condemned the "brutal, deadly violence against completely innocent people", adding that at the moment it is unclear what motives may have been behind it.
"It is difficult to take in the extent of what has happened today. Darkness is being cast over Sweden tonight. It is with bottomless sadness that we have received the news from the police that about ten people have been killed and several have been injured in a school shooting in Örebro. What must not happen has now also happened in Sweden," Kristersson told reporters in Stockholm.
Justice Minister Strömmer confirmed that an investigation into the incident is underway and that perpetrator also died at the scene.
"The person that the police currently assess to be the primary perpetrator belongs to the deceased. This is a person who is not known to the police before. Of course, we want to understand why, what has happened and what a perpetrator may have had for motives. We will have to wait for those answers. In time, the picture will become clearer. This is something that the investigation that has now been initiated will show," Strömmer said.
The shooting took place on the outskirts of the city of Örebro, which is located about 200 kilometres west of Stockholm. The gunman is reported to have opened fire at around 12:30pm local time, after many students had gone home following a national exam.
Students sheltered in nearby buildings and other parts of the school were evacuated. Police vehicles and ambulances, lights flashing, were seen across the parking lots and streets around the school as a helicopter flew overhead.
The school, called Campus Risbergska, serves students over age 20, according to its website. Primary and upper secondary school courses are offered, as well as Swedish classes for immigrants, vocational training and programs for people with intellectual disabilities.
Earlier on Tuesday Roberto Eid Forest, head of the local police, said the damage at the crime scene was so extensive that investigators were unable to be more definitive on the conclusive number of those wounded.
Police raided the suspect’s home after the shooting, but it wasn't immediately clear what they found. Eid Forest said police believe the perpetrator acted alone, and there were no warning signs before the attack.
Authorities said that there were no suspected connections to terrorism at this point, but police didn’t provide a motive.
Authorities are working to identify the deceased.

It is still too early to comment on the suspected perpetrator's profile and motives
A serious crime has been committed at a school and the police have not completed their investigation
so we know nothing yet about the driving forces behind the act
Research does indicate that there are some recurring factors regarding lone-acting individuals who commit school attacks
School attacks are often committed by students or former students of the school towards which the violence is directed
It has also been established that they have often experienced social exclusion
Failing in studies or work is also a common factor

There are now proposals from the government to put more locks on schools

How much do you think that these measures would reduce the risk of future shootings
What are the arguments against such measures
They are probably not the solution to everything
but could be an important complement to any preventive work
Experience shows that school attacks are usually committed by people who have attended or are attending the school
so they may have access to the premises and knowledge of what the premises look like
But it makes sense to ensure that unauthorised persons do not have access to the school area

What would you say are the most important measures schools
can take to reduce the risk of school attacks
Preventive work begins long before a person even starts thinking along extremist lines or about harming others
close and stable relationships outside the family
lower the risk of a person becoming radicalised
We need to work on many fronts at the same time
Increasing physical security in schools is an important aspect
where it is necessary to ensure that schools have established routines for how to act if the worst happens
All schools should have a plan that describes how the school should prepare for
Each individual school should design its own plan based on its particular conditions

Your predecessor at CVE led a major government inquiry into preventing exactly this sort of attack
most of the recommendations of have not yet been enacted
Do you think the measures recommended would have made any difference in this case
It is still too early to speculate about what could have been done differently in this specific case
Lone actors who have isolated themselves from society are always difficult to detect
The government decided to appoint an inquiry into school safety in July 2022
the inquiry proposed that CVE should be given a specific responsibility to provide support to actors who handle concerns about school attacks
which meant that we would have the opportunity to handle personal data
was decided in January 2025 and will come into force on March 1st this year
the government has chosen to proceed with all the proposals that the inquiry has submitted
will change the rules on confidentiality so that municipal adult education centres can share information about an individual with the social services if they believe this could prevent crimes
a new law is also expected to come into force
which will mean that schools and other actors are obliged to provide information to law enforcement authorities
How does CVE work with schools to try to identify students who present a risk
and what do you advise schools to do if they are worried about a particular student
School staff and other professionals can contact CVE's support phone

Our message is always to take your concerns seriously and to seek help from others

A number of international studies that have examined chats and various forums on the internet show that some individuals glorify and praise previous school attacks
They encourage others to carry out school attacks
CVE has handled about a hundred cases concerning concerns about school attacks
and the police authority receives new tips every week
In many of the cases where CVE has provided support to professionals
you can never know what would have happened if you had not acted
we consider it likely that the preventive work that is carried out in Sweden plays a very important role
We almost always receive cases at an early preventive stage
This shows that schools and municipalities to a large extent have knowledge and react in time
The Center for Preventing Violent Extremism national support function can be reached at 08-527 44 290 between 8am and 4pm on weekdays
mainly in municipalities and authorities at the local level

Syrians were among the 11 killed during the attack in Örebro on Tuesday
Police in Sweden are investigating whether the country’s worst mass shooting was racially motivated after it emerged that people of several nationalities
were among the 11 killed by a lone gunman at an adult education centre on Tuesday
different genders and different ages” were among those killed at Campus Risbergska
Asked by reporters whether there was any evidence of racist motivation for the attack
Bergqvist said: “We are looking at all of those parts.”
The Syrian embassy in Stockholm said its citizens were among the dead
the embassy of the Syrian Arab Republic in the kingdom of Sweden expresses its strong condemnation of the criminal incident that took place in the Swedish city of Örebro
which resulted in … innocent victims,” the embassy wrote on its official Facebook page
“It extends its sincere condolences to the families of the victims
and we wish a speedy recovery to the injured.”
who phoned his fiancee from the school and told her he had been shot
they shot us.’ He said he loves me and that’s the last thing I heard,” Kareen Elia
During the video call she could see somebody lying still beside him and blood on his hand
The couple had planned to get married on 25 July
She still does not know what happened to him and has not received an official death notice from police
“I still want to believe that he might come home
we stand by the window waiting for him to come home
No one wants to believe that he is dead,” she told the broadcaster
A police spokesperson said they were unable to confirm any of the names of those who had died because the identification process was continuing
police had revealed little about the victims or the gunman
other than that he was believed to have acted alone
The suspected gunman, who was among the dead, was named in media reports as Rickard Andersson, 35, a former student of the school who lived locally
He is understood to have attended some maths classes at the school a few years ago and had been unemployed for a decade
police again declined to confirm his identity until they had DNA confirmation
They previously said the suspect had no known connection to criminal gangs and that there was nothing to suggest he acted on ideological grounds
Police said the suspect had a licence for four weapons
all of which have been seized by police and three of which were next to him at the scene when officers secured him
Bergqvist said: “What we can say is that there is information that he may in some way be connected to the school
that he may have attended this school previously.”
Police said although “the picture is starting to clear” in the investigation
they were “not ready to give detailed answers
They said they had searched the suspect’s home
examined his phones and had been scouring film and sound clips submitted by witnesses
They said officers were met by an “inferno” when they arrived at the school about five minutes after the alarm was raised at 12.33pm on Tuesday
said: “They [police] tell of what can be described as an inferno with dead people
they could see smoke rising and thought they were being shot at by an approaching gunman
“They see a perpetrator armed with a rifle-like weapon.”
the leader of the main opposition Social Democrats and a former Swedish prime minister
said the school was known for having a diverse student body
“We have to wait until the police investigation is finished to know anything about motive and also when they can say who this person was,” she said
“But what is well known is that this is a school with students from many parts of the world.”
witnesses told her when she visited Örebro on Wednesday
the death toll could have been considerably higher
The election in 2022 of Sweden’s moderates-led coalition government
which depends on the support of the far-right Sweden Democrats
has led to increased anti-immigrant policies in Sweden
contributing to racist rhetoric and social polarisation
Andersson said: “As a Social Democrat I have spent the last two years arguing that we need to keep together in our society
We have nothing to win from more division or more polarisation in our society
When we have done best in our country is when we have been able to stick together
work together and take care of each other.”
She called for immediate reconsideration of gun laws
“What we already know is that there are too many guns that are available in our society
She also called for EU action to curb social media platforms that she said served up far too much violence to young people and children
“Not only in Sweden but all over the world
there is too much material on social media platforms that are romanticising violence
young people and others meet violence every day when they open their telephone.”

the Örebro school shooting has claimed at least 10 lives with another 6 people currently in stable conditions in hospital after treatment for gunshot wounds
As the investigation into the massacre progresses
more information is being slowly learned about the shooter 35-year-old Rickard Andersson
who shot and killed at least ten people before turning the gun on himself
Relatives of the gunman have said he was a reclusive

They have still not been able to establish a clear motive
35-year-old Rickard Andersson entered the Campus Risbergska adult education centre in the city of Örebro and shot dead 10 people before turning his gun on himself
Deputy commander Emelie Bodegrim told journalists they had a "fairly clear picture" of the day in question
but they were investigating a three-hour gap to establish what Andersson did before he was seen at the education centre at 11.30am
Police said they knew he had taken a bus to a street close to the school that morning
Police published a photo showing Andersson the morning of the attack
dressed in dark clothes and carrying a guitar case and a blue Ikea-bag
They asked members of the public to get in touch if they had any information
They also provided more details on the timeline of the shooting
saying officers had arrived six minutes after receiving reports of the shooting
The first police patrol entered the school at 12.40pm
and within minutes the gunman had opened fire on them
But officers could not immediately safely return fire
"From the time the perpetrator opened fire on our patrol
and another shot that ended the perpetrator's life," Niclas Hallgren
Police said the victims had apparently been targeted at "random" and that they had recovered 70 empty shell casings from the scene
Bodegrim said they were still looking into establishing a motive
and were looking into the perpetrator's living situation
They have already described him as an unemployed recluse
Police say he had no prior criminal record and a hunting licence for four guns
Police have not publicly named the victims but the foreign backgrounds of the majority of them soon came to light when their names and photos were published in Swedish newspapers and on social media
sparking concern among the country's immigrants

Sweden (OSV News) — Pope Francis said he was “deeply saddened” by the tragic shooting in a Swedish school
sending “assurance of his spiritual closeness to all affected by this traumatic incident,” in which 10 students of an adult education center lost their lives
signed by the Vatican’s secretary of state
said that the pontiff “offers prayers for the repose of the souls of those who have died,” as well as “consolation of their grieving families and friends
and for the speedy recovery of the injured” in the Feb

As the pope invoked upon the Swedish people “Almighty God’s gifts of unity and peace,” Swedish Cardinal Anders Arborelius of Stockholm lamented the rise of violence in Sweden after 11 people
were killed in the deadliest mass shooting in the country’s history Feb
the cardinal said the country’s Catholics mourned “the victims of the violent act in Örebro,” a northern city located roughly 120 miles west of Stockholm
“Violence and shootings only seem to increase and increase,” the cardinal said
“We ask for God’s help so that goodness and harmony may prevail in our country.”
A spokesperson for the Diocese of Stockholm told OSV News that the cardinal
who is in Rome for the Jubilee pilgrimage sponsored by the Nordic bishops’ conference
we (will) pray in all our churches for those who have been killed and for God’s mercy,” the cardinal said
The cardinal’s statement included a message from St
saying it would remain open for personal prayers and celebrate an evening Mass Feb
5 to “pray for our city and those affected by Tuesday’s events.”
local media reported that a masked man entered the Campus Risbergska
killing 10 people before turning the gun on himself
Police have yet to identify the shooter but described him as a 35-year-old male “not known to police.” Investigators also warned of false information on social media regarding the shooter’s motives
was a resident of Örebro with no prior criminal convictions and a valid weapons license
King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden called the shooting a “terrible atrocity” he learned about with “sadness and dismay” and expressed his condolences to the victims
as well as thanking police and first-responders “who worked intensively to save and protect human lives on this dark day.”
At a press conference hours after the shooting
Swedish Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer said the shooting “has shaken our society to its core.”
“It is something that one would have read about with horror in other countries but would never think it would happen in Sweden,” he said
Cardinal Arborelius’ concerns echoed those of many in the country due to a sharp increase in gang-related violence
According to a 2024 study published by the Nordic Journal of Criminology
Sweden is the only country in Europe that has seen a continuous increase in gun violence since 2005
Sweden appears to have the highest rate of firearm homicides against men and young adults among the examined European Union countries and lies above the European average for homicide in general,” the report said

told a press conference later in the evening
that it was "the worst mass shooting in Swedish history"
"The suspected assailant is not known to police," he added
"He has no connection to any gang," Forest said
Police confirmed early on Wednesday morning, just after midnight, that eleven people were killed in the attack, with the perpetrator believed to be among the dead. Police press spokesperson Fredrik Svedemyr told SVT that it's possible the number of fatalities may rise
"We don't have a complete picture at the moment of the number of injuries
and since we don't have any details on the status of those who are being treated in hospital
there's unfortunately a risk that the number does not stop at eleven," he said
School attacks are relatively rare in Sweden
but the country has suffered shootings and bombings linked to gang violence that kill dozens of people each year
Örebro police chief Roberto Eid Forest would not confirm or deny during a press conference at 10am on Wednesday that the perpetrator had a weapons license or discuss the type of weapon or weapons used in the attack
that police heard shots when they arrived and that the perpetrator was dead by the time they reached him
although there is a lot of evidence suggesting that this is the case," he said
He confirmed in a later interview with SVT that police had not fired any shots
police provided new details about the six people being treated in hospital
Forest said that there was "no new information" on the number of dead or wounded
He also said that police were still working to identify all of the fatalities
He encouraged anyone who had been at the school on Tuesday to contact police on 114 14
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson noted on Tuesday evening that a lot of "questions were still unanswered"
"But there will come a time when we will know what happened
how it could happen and what motives may have been behind it," Kristersson said
Police press spokesperson Frederik Svedemyr told SVT on Wednesday morning that there are no signs of an "ideological motive"
He added that incorrect information is being spread about the shooting and motives behind it on social media
and urged the public to only trust official information from the police
Swedish police said they believed the gunman acted alone but did not rule out they had accomplices
Police received the first reports of a school shooting at 12.33pm
The attacker is also believed to have carried some form of equipment to create smoke inside the school
told newspaper Dagens Nyheter they heard gunfire in a hallway
"Students came and said someone was shooting
Then we heard more shooting in the hallway
"There were a lot of gunshots at first and then it was quiet for a half-hour and then it started again
Some witnesses told Swedish media they heard what they believed to be automatic gunfire
Swedish television channel TV4 meanwhile reported that police had raided the suspect's home in Örebro late on Tuesday afternoon
It said the suspect was around 35 years old and had a license to carry a weapon and no criminal record
but did not provide any details about his identity
Police have not confirmed that information
Churches in Örebro and the local mosque were open on Wednesday to provide support to the community
Sweden's King Carl XVI Gustaf said he had received the news of the shooting with "sadness and dismay."

At least 10 people, including the gunman, were killed Tuesday at an adult education center in what Sweden’s prime minister called the country’s worst mass shooting. But a final death toll, a conclusive number of wounded and a motive hadn’t yet been determined hours later.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson gave a news conference in the aftermath of the tragedy, which happened on the outskirts of Orebro. The city is about 200 kilometers (125 miles) west of Stockholm.
“Today, we have witnessed brutal, deadly violence against completely innocent people,” Kristersson told reporters in Stockholm. “This is the worst mass shooting in Swedish history. Many questions remain unanswered, and I cannot provide those answers either.
“But the time will come when we will know what happened, how it could occur, and what motives may have been behind it. Let us not speculate,” he said.
Gun violence at schools is very rare in Sweden. But there have been several incidents in recent years in which people were wounded or killed with other weapons such as knives or axes.
Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer called the shooting “an event that shakes our entire society to its core.”
While Swedes read about such violence in other places, Strömmer said that the country previously felt it wouldn’t happen there. Other tragedies in Swedish schools weren’t to the extent of Tuesday’s attack, he said, calling it “indescribably sad” for the community.
The shooting also sent shock waves through Europe, with officials in Brussels expressing their outrage at the carnage.
“What happened today in Örebro is truly horrifying,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wrote on social media. “Such violence and terror have no place in our societies — least of all in schools. In this dark hour, we stand with the people of Sweden.”
The damage at the crime scene was so extensive that investigators were unable to be more definitive about the number of fatalities, said Roberto Eid Forest, head of the local police.
Police said that the death toll could rise. Eid Forest told reporters that the suspected gunman was among those killed. Police believe the perpetrator acted alone, and he wasn’t previously known to police, officials said.
Authorities said that there were no suspected connections to terrorism at this point, but police didn’t provide a motive.
“Of course, we all want to understand why this happened, what occurred, and what motives the perpetrator may have had,” Kristersson said. “We will have to wait for those answers — in due time, the picture will become clearer.”
Police raided the suspect’s home after Tuesday’s shooting, but it wasn’t immediately clear what they found. Eid Forest said there were no warning signs before the attack. Authorities were working to identify the deceased.
Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf praised police and the rescue and medical personnel who responded to the shooting, and issued words of comfort to the families of the victims.
“It is with sadness and dismay that my family and I have received the information about the terrible atrocity in Örebro,” the monarch said in a statement. “We send our condolences tonight to the families and friends of the deceased. Our thoughts at this time also go to the injured and their relatives, as well as to others affected.”
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen expressed support to neighboring Sweden, calling Tuesday’s shooting “a terrible situation.”
“I am so sad and all my thoughts are with the victims and their families and with the entire Swedish community and society,” she said after a meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London. “It’s a terrible situation. And of course, our neighboring countries have all of our support.”
The shooting erupted after many students had gone home following a national exam. Police vehicles and ambulances, lights flashing, blanketed the parking lots and streets around the school as a helicopter buzzed overhead.
Teacher Lena Warenmark told SVT News that there were unusually few students on the campus Tuesday afternoon after the exam. She also told the broadcaster that she heard probably 10 gunshots.
Students sheltered in nearby buildings. Other parts of the school were evacuated following the shooting, which began at around 12:30 p.m. local time (1130 GMT).
Andreas Sundling, 28, was among those forced to barricade themselves inside the school.
“We heard three bangs and loud screams,” he told Expressen newspaper while sheltering in a classroom.
Geir Moulson in Berlin and Kwiyeon Ha in London contributed.

Musk shared a post falsely accusing the media and politicians of not commenting on the Sweden school shooting
Elon Musk has been condemned for sharing lies about the global response to the Sweden school massacre
Rickard Andersson, a 35-year-old recluse, has been named in Swedish media as the suspected gunman who killed 10 people at Risbergska School in Örebro
But as well-wishers paid their respects to the victims of the massacre online, X owner and member of the Trump administration Musk promoted a false claim that “no European politician” had mentioned the massacre

Scores of replies to the tweet also pointed out how extensive the response was from the media and politicians

Stockholm University professor Christian Chistensen

“Musk amplifying lie that mainstream media aren’t covering mass killing in #Sweden — falsely implying it’s because killer was an immigrant and woke media won’t say that — is a classic b******t strategy from the far-right. Basically: “They won’t tell you the truth…but we will.”
Swedish journalist Gunilla von Hall added: “Elon Musk retweeting post that ”legacy media” in Europe has been silent about the shooting in Sweden. Pure lie. Has been massively reported in all major European news outlets.”
And senior journalist at BBC Verify Shayan Sardarizadeh shared screenshot evidence of the widespread reporting on Sweden's worst ever shooting.
Among the political leaders who have condemned the violence and offered their condolences are Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, German chancellor Olaf Scholz, French president Emmanuel Macron, Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau, EU Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen.
In Örebro, police continue to hunt for the motive behind the attack, with Andersson described by relatives as a “loner” who “doesn't seem to like people”.
The shooter was connected to the Risbergska school and may have attended it, authorities said in a Thursday press conference. He opened fire with at least one rifle-like weapon, they added, and he had four gun licences.
Three weapons and lots of ammunition were found on the dead gunman when he was found by police on the scene at Risbergska School.

35-year-old Rickard Andersson entered the Campus Risbergska adult education centre in the city of Örebro and killed 10 people before turning his gun on himself
The five "were in critical condition upon arrival," health authority Region Örebro Län said in a statement
None of them remain in intensive care," the authority said
The sixth patient was treated for minor injures and was discharged on February 7th
Police have remained tight-lipped about the killer's possible motive
police said there was no indication of an "ideological motive" before apologising for the "unfortunate phrasing"
They said a racist motive was one of several being investigated
Swedish police confirmed on February 7th that seven women and three men had died in the mass shooting
but the media have been slowly filling in the details
Police have said their investigation could take up to a year and the killer's motive may never be established
Andersson had been enrolled at Campus Risbergska in the past but not attended classes since 2021
Police have described him as an unemployed recluse with no prior criminal record
He had lived alone in an apartment since 2016
"with very few contacts with other people"

Swedish police said earlier on Wednesday there was "a lot" to indicate that the shooter had turned the gun on himself
"There is a lot to indicate that," Örebro police chief Roberto Eid Forest told a press conference when asked by a reporter if the gunman had shot himself
with Forest adding that the suspect was deceased when police reached him
The Expressen newspaper reported that Andersson had been nicknamed Luvan
at school because he often had a hood pulled over his head
and would also often obscure his face with his hands
he had been granted a licence for four rifles
He carried three rifles to Campus Risbergska
where he carried out his attack: one hunting rifle
The newspaper reported that Andersson had repeatedly applied to do his national service and been rejected every time because of his lack of the necessary school grades to qualify for upper secondary education
He finished the ninth class at the Navets elementary school, aged 16, without receiving a passing grade in a single subject, Expressen reported
He did manage to get into Wadköpings education centre
he was registered as a student at Campus Risbergska
He started studying maths at upper secondary level
but appears to have dropped out before completing the course
Public broadcasters SR and the Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet newspapers have yet to name the shooter
