The CEO of a company that makes $1,200 AI-powered robots for autistic children says he has no current options to keep his company afloat though is “exploring all avenues”
Customers were told the US-based robotics company Embodied would soon shut down and the robots would stop working
a US$799 (A$1,250) human robot that uses AI to interact with people with features like telling jokes
spinning stories and sharing affirmations.
It was targeted at children — in particular children with autism — but has also found adult fans
Embodied sold it by claiming that interacting with Moxie and building a relationship could help improve emotional regulation
“[Moxie is] a supportive robot friend for kids that loves learning about their interests and hearing about their day,” the website says.
But after users on Reddit and TikTok started to notice their robots were increasingly not functioning, the company acknowledged in an email to customers in late November that it was closing down, as was first reported by gaming outlet Aftermath
“A critical funding round fell through, leaving us unable to sustain operations,” according to a FAQ posted on the website.
The company’s impending closure means that all Moxie devices
which depend on cloud-based AI services to power their interactivity
the Moxie becomes an expensive paperweight
The company said it would not be offering refunds due to its financial issues
Moxie owners are unhappy about the imminent death of a device that they or their children had grown close to. Comments on the unofficial Moxie subreddit r/MoxieRobot ranged from concerns for customers who had just recently bought the device to dread about managing the fallout
“My autistic child is devastated and I’m pissed,” said one user.
Chris Littleking is an Australian who runs the amateur robotics forum “Robots Around the House” and owns two Moxie robots.
He bought them in 2023 because Moxie’s “eye contact
vivid face animations and ability to give lots of non-verbal communication by adjusting its body posture separate it from anything else currently available”
The company’s sudden decision to shut Moxies down shocked Littleking who was looking forward to promised upcoming features.
Annabel Blake is a researcher at the University of Sydney who is examining the relationship between child and conversational AI
like the technology underpinning Moxie’s abilities
Blake said that the sudden removal of a product like Moxie can be a traumatic experience for children who’ve grown accustomed to it
“Something that parents aren’t aware of is that social machines can cease working for a variety of reasons — they can malfunction
And if the child’s developed routine interactions or dependence
then that sudden disruption is where we’re going to see these negative experiences,” Blake said
the relationship between children and conversational AI is a nascent field of research given the infancy of this technology
but there are already ideas about how companies can avoid situations like abruptly removing a trusted device like Moxie
One suggestion is using the opportunity to carefully introduce children to the idea of loss
Embodied had provided a letter to help parents have this conversation with their children
the letter — which told children that Moxie had lost funding — didn’t resonate with some parents
Blake said this could have been done better
and things like this are a huge part of human life
so maybe there is a role for transitory objects and attachments with these robots
but have that as part of the product experience,” they said.
Blake also mentioned that manufacturers should plan for this when creating their products and not when things go bottom up. They raised the idea of a “right to reanimate”, which would require companies to make sure products could continue to be used with other conversational AI software (similar to a right to repair)
On Tuesday, US time, Embodied CEO Paolo Pirjanian made his first public statement on Moxie’s decommissioning. “We cannot overstate our regret that circumstances had come to this,” he posted on LinkedIn
“We acknowledge how frightening it must feel to think that your investment in Moxie could be lost.”
Pirjanian’s statement left open the possibility of finding new financial backers or being acquired
He also acknowledged the idea of open-sourcing Moxie — meaning giving access to its software to anyone so that third parties could potentially reanimate the robot — but downplayed its likelihood.
technical and contractual knots,” he said.
Littleking isn’t optimistic about its chances
“I feel it’s just an unfortunate reality that companion robots are incredibly hard products to be successful with,” he said.

Farmer Lee Hennessy on why he’s crowdfunding for a security system for his upstate NY farm
Moxie Ridge Farm
We have our goat milk and onsite creamery for our goat cheeses
and we’ve just started our meat goat herds
We’re just celebrating our fifth anniversary and
Part of the farm’s mission is for me to be visible as a 40-year-old trans man
But I’ve been really struggling with how to balance keeping myself safe and high-functioning
while at the same time doing what I want to be doing with my life
which is being that trans person that’s just living and doing cool shit
I had a lot of ingrained fear based on what I was taught about how wrong
While I was thrilled to finally move through the world as myself
I’m not proud to say that a built-in reaction to the thought of doing that was
The stories that were being told about trans people and queer people were all stories of violence
and the way that I could control my own safety was by dressing really feminine
It’s not inherently unsafe to be a trans person; it’s unsafe because of other people’s opinions about our bodies
The fear caused by these anti-trans sentiments have absolutely made it harder to do our work on the farm — and it’s affected how I run the farm. I’m single, I live alone, I run a business, a huge part of which is maintaining a social media presence. But if you look at my social media for pretty much the whole year of 2020, whether it’s my personal Instagram account or the farm’s Instagram account
we’re exposed — anybody can just walk up and mess with my animals
I realized we needed a security system when I began actually turning down business opportunities out of fear that they would draw attention to the fact that we’re a trans-owned farm
Last year we got a marketing grant through the Northeast Dairy Business Innovation Center
I’ve been putting off starting with the PR team because it would mean more people would hear about us
but also it is very in vogue right now for others to not like the fact that I exist
But we’re also launching a big mutual aid program
we’re going to be supporting trans-owned farms
we’re going to be supporting Black-owned farms.” I wanted to launch this in December and I kept putting it off
It really came to a head when I got COVID this winter
freaking out because I couldn’t go to the farmers markets
I realized I was afraid because we’re totally accessible
and we’ve got over 100 animals here we rotate and graze
and anybody that wanted to could come by and potentially hurt them
“What can I do that’s in my power to make myself feel safe in this?” Our security system would include a fence
and gates that would close properly at night
but it would ensure a little bit of protection
this security system is not to protect me from my neighbors
There is this ridiculous misconception that people that live in the country are small-minded and dangerous
Our community has been super supportive of me and the farm
But I told my neighbors — they had no idea what transgender meant and they asked questions
It’s actually made me less patient with people who insist it’s hard to remember a new name and pronouns
if the 80-year-old I buy grain from can get it
I would love to fly a trans flag and the rainbow flag
because I don’t know who’s driving by and if they might have an issue with it
and that puts my animals and myself in danger
Does anybody really believe that a keyboard warrior making a gross threat online
or saying how people like you should be dead
For people unfamiliar with what it’s like to be trans in this world
If you’re not queer or trans or what’s considered “marginalized,” then why would you understand that you need to put different security measures
And I’m a 40-year-old white trans man who is often mistaken for cis
I am the most privileged of this community
because other trans people have to deal with a lot more
Having the security system will mean we can fly that trans flag
Once we started seeing people responding to the GoFundMe
but it would be lovely — especially for queer folks — to be able to invite people to come on up and have a great day at a farm
“Don’t be worried about getting side-eyed or being judged or whatever
Just come up.” We could finally have a food stand on the farm
We could show other queer people that this is what it’s like to have a farm
and that you can have a good life in the country
the trendiness of scapegoating us were not going on
I’d probably be still flying under the radar
But this moment has galvanized us to take our safety into our own hands
I feel like in this way we’re acknowledging what’s going on
and being vulnerable enough to ask for help
And it’s been beautiful to see the support — our communities have been supportive and have been contributing without even knowing anything about the farm
I did not expect it to be an emotional thing
I have been doing this and it has been hard
but now I think: What else can our farm do

– For the players on Michigan State’s club football team
their passion for the sport can end up costing hundreds of dollars
the original budget was determined by multiplying the club fee by the roster limit of 60
the team only has 46 players and Matt Oxie
a neuroscience major who is the team’s president
estimated the final expenses to be nearly $30,000
That’s what makes it so expensive,” said Oxie
such as the game field rental at the Hope Sports Complex
the bright orange cones used for training drills
crowded bus rides and a handful of hotel rooms for certain away games
The cost for a dark green helmet with a thick white stripe down the middle and a pair of heavy shoulder pads are factored into the cost for a new player
if they do not own the MSU-specific equipment
Players are responsible for the price of their full Nike game uniforms
a senior history education major and returning player
meaning a helmet could cost $200 more and $100 more top-of-the-line shoulder pads
Equipment and team fees are mandatory to be eligible to play
The team has worked out various deals with players
like incremental payments that can span months
or individuals may purchase used equipment items.
“We do our best to accommodate everyone’s financial needs
We know guys are paying to be a student at Michigan State so we know every dollar counts,” said junior horticulture major Eric Savad
has previously encountered straining unexpected costs
The original budget is set at the end of the spring semester
but it is not official until later in the season after new costs
The team has been forced to cancel certain games due to the cost
“Our budget is fluid throughout the year,” said Oxie
“We have it set to a certain amount at the end of spring semester
some of the unexpected costs include the doubled fee of $3,200 to begin practice at John M
Potential players have ordered equipment in the spring
only to decide they no longer wish to play in the fall and leave the bill with the team
The five-hour road trip to Hocking College in Nelsonville
Ohio was not planned until six days in advance and cost nearly $800 for three vans and gas
the team received some financial help from the Associated Students of Michigan State University (ASMSU)
getting $5,000 reimbursement for their trip to play at Miami University in Ohio
The team mostly relies on fundraising and their own money to cover the costs
the team is considered a Registered Student Organization and not a true club sport yet
There is no money or equipment set aside for MSU club football by the university
Oxie said that the team recently collected an additional $50 from each player after the home attendance numbers were lower than hoped
“We already expect them to pay a lot to come out and play and we do not want to charge them throughout the season to do things they should already be able to do with their club fee,” said Oxie
the team played seven of their planned eight-game schedule and continued to regularly practice
Savad said that everyone on the team was willing to work with the changing costs to keep the season going
“If that means players drive their cars instead of taking a bus
“If that means chip in $5 for a night of practice at the game field
They might not be happy about it and they might complain
The team relies on fundraising as a major source of money, hosting events such as a car wash and a college night at Spare Time Entertainment Center. Their most effective campaign has been the gofundme page started by senior psychology major and linebacker/defensive end Patrick Loewen
The crowdfunding effort has raised $2,405 so far
“It’s been by far our most successful fundraiser,” said senior elementary education major and wide receiver Danny Mogill
way more than any of our other fundraisers.”
Loewen said the gofundme was successful because it is an easy way to donate
“People have expressed interest in donating to the team
“This is an easy way for people to help out.”
Loewen added that the page hit its initial goal quickly
so he decided to raise it to $5,000 to see how much help they could receive
“We’re squeezing the money out where we can
That is kind of what we’ve been doing,” said Loewen
Donations mostly come from family and friends
with the team receiving a few anonymous ones too
The team also sells white block “S” stickers at their games for $3 for one or $5 for two
“This club cannot be funded on the back of the players
because we are all just college students,” said Oxie
“We’re all broke college students who pool their money together to get a medium pizza on a Friday night with our four other roommates.”
players are willing to look past the budget struggles to look at the numbers on a teammates’ jerseys for what may be the last time
They have an opportunity to play full contact football at a Division I college
something a lot of high school players dream of
guys jumped on the opportunities to continue their football careers and play as long as they possibly can,” Mogill said

But with the ISL’s professional environment
so he elected to drop out of the league to be able to swim at NCAAs one day
I would like to thank Energy Standard for this marvelous opportunity,” Andrei Minakov told Swimming World
“And good luck to the team during the meets
“This decision was made by several reasons
but the main for them is that I want to save eligibility for my future NCAA career
“I hope my withdraw won’t affect the team’s success.”
But Minakov won’t be swimming in the NCAA this year since he will be taking a gap year to train for the Olympics, saying he intends to enroll in an American university after the Olympic Games. This isn’t too much of a surprise since he has been training in California off and on the last couple years with the Terrapins Swim Team in Concord
“I made the decision to take a gap year during spring time,” Minakov said
my family and coaches helped me out with this difficult situation.”
Minakov was living in California with friends so he could train at Terrapins in 2018
but was doing most of his training in Russia this past year
“Sometimes we went to camps like Armenia or to national base in Moscow
I hope there will be a chance to spend at least a month in the United States for example.”
Minakov (right) with Chad Le Clos at the World Championships
Andrei Minakov has enjoyed a nice last 12 months in his swimming career
He won six gold medals at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games last fall
moving up to sixth in the world rankings in the 100 fly at just 16 years old
he had the fastest time of any Russian in 2018 and also took down Hungary’s Kristof Milak
who won the silver medal in the 100 fly at the World Championships the summer before in 2017
Minakov followed that up with three gold medals at the European Juniors in early July
but he was saving himself for the big show at the World Championships in Gwangju
Minakov won the silver medal in the 100 fly with a 50.83
It was something he definitely did not see coming
“I don’t like to expect and predict,” Minakov said
“In my opinion it’s better to motivate yourself to be on the podium
I always think only about how I work hard through all distance.”
Minakov also swam the butterfly leg on Russia’s bronze medal winning medley relay team with a 50.54 split and swam on the prelims team of the 4×100 free
Minakov was not done. He continued on to swim at the World Junior Championships in Budapest a month later and won three gold medals and was named swimmer of the meet by FINA
Minakov’s exit from the ISL is a blow to the Energy Standard team
but he will be a huge addition to any NCAA team next year

Twelve-Year Anniversary of Michael Phelps’ Magic Touch in 100 Butterfly (Video)
Today marks the 12th anniversary of Michael Phelps’ come-from-behind triumph over Serbia’s Milorad Cavic in the 100-meter butterfly at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing
Phelps defeated Cavic by the slimmest of margins
The victory was the seventh of the week for Phelps
and tied him with Mark Spitz for the most gold medals in a single Olympiad
the dramatic performance set the stage for Phelps to win his record-setting eighth gold medal in the 400 medley relay
I thought that had cost me the race,” said Phelps
whose triumph was the second of three straight in the event
faster strokes to try to get my hand on the wall
At various points in the decade-plus that has passed since that 2008 showdown in the Water Cube, Cavic has maintained he won the race. That opinion was expressed in a recent feature article by The Ringer’s John Gonzalez
