pictured in Sweden where they were taking part in the prestigious Partille Cup Fergus DennehyKerrymanFri 12 Jul 2024 at 14:00Students from St Brendan’s College in Killarney earlier this month enjoyed a trip that they will never ever forget when they took part in the prestigious Partille Cup in Gothenburg in Sweden The invitation to compete in the competition came following the school entering the All Ireland Schools contest for Olympic Handball for the first time last year and this debut outing ended amazingly with the school winning not one but two All-Ireland titles in the U15 and U18 age groups respectively The Partille Cup is the world’s largest youth Olympic Handball competition with over 1400 teams from 50 countries taking part and it ran from July 1 to July 6 one of the boy’s teachers and handball coaches could not speak highly enough of the week long tournament Not only was it amazing in terms of the skill progression that it gave the boys in terms of playing Olympic Handball at tournament level Cora-Marie said the boys came on leaps and bounds It was something that the boys said that they'd love to go back again to because they just enjoyed it so much It was so different because there were 38 nations there and the boys got to meet so many different people as well getting to experience the joy of sports without the pressures of winning on top of them They were just able to have the craic and fun and by Jesus "They knew going into it that it was going to be hard but they still made sure to have great fun over there We ended up having a load of support from Norwegians "The Irish community in Gothenburg as well got in touch with us and they ended up coming to see some of our matches as well Olympic Handball Ireland haven't sent a team over [to the Partille Cup] in 12 years and two of their coaches came up with us to Sweden and they were saying how amazing it was to see Ireland back in the fold again,” she added Living under the same roof as people from so many different countries introduced the boys to a view of life outside of both Killarney and Kerry "It was a huge life learning experience for the boys We were staying in a school with all these different nations and all the boys were around the same ages so one evening there was thunderstorms so we couldn't go outside and they all just ended up watching the Euros together They were all just getting on with each other and it was great for the boys to see a life outside of Killarney I saw that the boys were maybe a bit nervous about talking to other people especially at the opening ceremony but sure by the time we left they were chatting to anyone and everyone,” she continued Cora-Marie said that the boys performed amazing especially when you consider how new they still are to the sport "They got out of the group stages and they got as far as the playoffs where they played an Icelandic team who told us that they had been playing since they were four years old They [the boys] did hold their own for the first half and they were only trailing 7-4 going into the break you could see Iceland's bit more experience shining through and it finished 17-10 to Iceland." "I only played Olympic Handball in Community Games back when it wasn't even known as Community Games,” she laughed we're all in the same boat and one day sure we just gave the option to the lads to try out a different sport and sure they were only delighted The school is currently in the midst of a major fundraising drive to help cover the costs of getting the boys to Sweden and so they are inviting everyone and anyone to come to their fundraising quiz which is taking place in the Golden Nugget in Fossa tonight (Tuesday May 14) where they will also be doing a raffle on the night with a range of prizes from businesses in Killarney and surrounding parishes the group have set up an online fundraising page too if anyone wishes to contribute The link to the fundraiser can be found here: https://www.idonate.ie/fundraiser/StBrendansCollegeOlympicHandball
