So Svangvitaya decided that for their 35th anniversary loomed he’d fully remodel the space and give it new life pointing to a new emerald green theme and accents like a full-size tree draped in fairy lights I wanted a really good setting for people to want to come and sit down and eat.” But their biggest reveal might be the dish a decade-plus in the making: chicken khao soi “I’ve asked her to make it for the last 15 years and she just came out with it three months ago,” he says and you can taste why it’s such a hit—a rich silky broth and a smorgasbord of accoutrements like chile oil is like making it to 100 years old as a human Those who reach that kind of rarefied milestone don’t usually have super secret tricks up their sleeves; they just keep putting one foot in front of the other (and maybe add a pretty tree and mom’s long-overdue curry ramen).Svangvitaya says he wants to keep the restaurant going as long as he can eventually taking over for his mother when she’s ready to retire View this post on Instagram A post shared by Piedra Santa (@piedrasantasd) Have breaking news, exciting scoops, or great stories about new San Diego restaurants or the city’s food scene? to discuss his career and legacy Priyanka Tewari: You have announced your retirement from the PPS board and we even heard that you may not seek more public service roles When you began serving on the Pittsburgh Public School Board representing District 3 in 2018 I searched for a young person who I thought had the qualities of leadership and experience to serve on the school board I discovered that the method that we were using to teach children how to read was an outdated And so my first big challenge on the school board was to get the board to adopt evidence-based reading and is integrating phonics into our reading Institutions — bureaucracies — are very difficult to turn around But I'm confident that the current superintendent will be successful One of the efforts that you were involved with as a civil rights activist in Mississippi in the 1960s was desegregating schools How has that experience informed your time on the PPS board especially knowing that even 70 years after Brown v Pittsburgh Public Schools are more segregated now than in the 1980s The bravery of the families in Mississippi — the fact that families were so willing to risk their well being to get their children educated — it helped me understand the importance of education We've attempted desegregating the schools before in Pittsburgh Pittsburgh is so racially segregated and people want neighborhood schools So it requires a transportation system that is effective and efficient That's one of the challenges that the new school board will have to take on And the desegregation of our residential neighborhoods is essential Your parents gave you the name Samuel Wesley Howze But it was one of your mentors who gave you the name Sala Udin He was attempting to share as much as he could with me as my mentor “I think I'm going to name you Salah Uddin: ‘one who seeks knowledge.’” And I still bear the name “seeker of knowledge.” You have always made yourself available to talk about your life. In fact, you've given WESA several interviews Why is it so important for people to know your story and your history I would have saved so many memories: brochures I reach back to try to pull those things into the present and there's so much that I lost I'm proud that I'm at a place now where I can sit down Have a tip for the WESA newsroom? Sala and seeking to remove Sala from office has been denied just a matter of days leading up to the Tuesday Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Patricia Perez Fresard who has been hearing matters in the case after each of the Lenawee County judges recused themselves from participating denying motions from Henagan that challenged Sala’s right to hold public office in Lenawee County based on her primary residency Henagan brought forth the lawsuit and filed action on Aug. 27 in Lenawee County Circuit Court alleging that Sala does not reside in Lenawee County as stated on her Affidavit of Identity a document that must be completed by all candidates filing for election or reelection 5 general/presidential election ballot as the only candidate for Lenawee County Probate Court judge She is seeking reelection to the bench after being elected in 2018 is a write-in candidate for the same probate court judge post Because of complaints earlier this year that challenged her original campaign signatures and the second submission of signatures Henagan conceded to having her name removed from the printed ballot but is eligible to seek office as a write-in candidate From October: Lawsuit alleges Probate Judge Catherine Sala is not a primary Lenawee County resident It is Henagan’s claim that Sala’s primary place of residence is at her husband’s residence in Jackson County’s Grass Lake and not at an address in Addison If that were found to be the case and Sala primarily lived in Jackson County she would not have the authority to govern in the Lenawee County courts system With the assistance of a private investigator Henagan attempted to show that Sala did not live in Lenawee County she should no longer be allowed on the ballot for reelection nor should she continue to serve as a judge in Lenawee County An initial hearing in the case was held Sept that also involved the Lenawee County Board of Election Commissioners Due to what was described in the court order as “vague” and “ambiguous” when it came to whether Henagan’s lawsuit pertained to Sala’s current term of office or her reelection bid Henagan claimed Sala misrepresented her address on the Affidavits of Identity she filed in 2018 and in 2024 and is “therefore disqualified from running for and holding office." Henagan had a team that engaged in surveillance of both the Addison residence and the Grass Lake address between May 28 and July 24 Timing of the investigation and of the lawsuit itself raised concerns among Sala’s attorneys Plaintiff (Henagan) concluded her investigations regarding Defendant’s (Sala) residence in late July about four months prior to expiration of Defendant’s current term of office For purposes of Plaintiff’s request for a writ of mandamus removing Defendant from the November 2024 ballot the Court concluded that Plaintiff’s request was barred by laches because ballots were already being printed by the time the Plaintiff filed her action.” Clarification of the term ‘residence’“Residence,” as used for registration and voting purposes is defined as a place at which a person habitually sleeps If a person has more than one residence or if a person has a residence separate from that of his or her spouse the place at which the person resides the greater part of the time shall be his or her official residence Henagan’s claim that Sala primarily resides in Grass Lake is based on the report of two private investigators that contains hundreds of pages of background information footage from 24-hour motion activated cameras and multiple random observation dates and photos including from June 1 exaggerated assumptions based on scant actual information.” The final date of private investigation surveillance was July 24 when the investigators said they saw Sala “drive to the Grass Lake residence and pull her vehicle into the garage,” the court order detailed The investigator’s report on behalf of Henagan concludes that upon each visit to the Addison address Sala — labeled as “Person of Interest” in the report — “does not appear to be there.” “It has become obvious that the POI is trying not to be seen,” the report said Subscribe Now: For all the latest local developments, breaking news, and high school and college sports content. Fresard’s order goes on to refer to the private investigation as “so-called investigative reports” that do not lend sufficient credence to justify removing Sala from the probate court bench While acknowledging that more than one month of surveillance and observation was conducted only a handful of observations were described “accompanied by highly speculative analysis.” Sala presented evidence showing she resides at the Addison address including an affidavit from one of her neighbors who states he lives three doors down from Sala and regularly lets her dog out while she is at work but does not but does not feed the dog because Sala feeds it and submitted affidavits from her parents who attest to regularly visiting Sala at the address in Addison “While Plaintiff (Henagan) has provided documentation that shows a connection between Defendant and the Grass Lake address where her husband resides that connection does not establish that Defendant resides at the Grass Lake address,” Fresard’s order said none of Plaintiff’s evidence supports her claim that Defendant no longer resides at the Addison address the Court finds no substantive merit to her claims sufficient to justify quo warranto proceedings.” It also was served to the Lenawee County Board of Election Commissioners on Sept — Contact reporter Brad Heineman at bheineman@lenconnect.com or follow him on X, formerly Twitter, @LenaweeHeineman. after being released mother of Cecilia Sala an Italian journalist who was detained on Dec leaves Palazzo Chigi after meeting with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni ROME (AP) — An Italian journalist detained in Iran for three weeks was freed Wednesday and returned home after her fate had become intertwined with that of an Iranian engineer arrested in Italy and wanted by the United States where Premier Giorgia Meloni was on hand to welcome her alongside Sala’s family members Sala descended from the plane and ran to embrace her boyfriend who later posted a photo of a smiling Sala greeting Meloni in the airport on social media Sala’s liberation marked a major diplomatic and political victory for Meloni whose recent visit to President-elect Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago retreat greatly enhanced her stature internationally at a time when Italy was negotiating Sala’s release Meloni’s office said the premier had personally informed Sala’s parents and credited the release to the government’s “intensive work on diplomatic and intelligence channels.” Iranian media acknowledged the journalist’s release Iranian officials offered no immediate comment Italian commentators had speculated that Iran detained and held Sala as a bargaining chip to ensure the release in Italy of Mohammad Abedini who was arrested by Italian authorities at Milan’s Malpensa airport three days before Abedini remains in detention in Italy but has asked a Milan court to grant him house arrest pending an extradition hearing Sala’s release was met with cheers in Italy Lawmakers from across the political spectrum praised the outcome with the opposition Democratic leader Elly Schlein thanking the government specifically Meloni in a statement on X thanked “all those who helped make Cecilia’s return possible allowing her to re-embrace her family and colleagues.” Meloni’s visit to Trump had a strong impact on the premier’s international standing which strengthened Italy’s hand in negotiations “Any time you can reinforce the credibility of a leader of a country at a particular moment the stronger the country is,” he told Italy’s Sky Tg24 Sala’s fate had become intertwined with that of Abedini Each country’s foreign ministry summoned the other’s ambassador to demand the prisoner’s release and decent detention conditions The diplomatic tangle was particularly complicated for Italy which is a historic ally of Washington but maintains good relations with Tehran Members of Meloni’s cabinet took personal interest in the case given the geopolitical implications Foreign Minister Antonio Tanaji and Crosetto hailed the diplomatic teamwork involved to secure Sala’s release A hearing on his bid to be given house arrest is scheduled for Jan which had flagged Sala’s detention as an attack on press freedom “Now the 25 journalists still held in Iranian prisons must also be released,” the group said in a social media post Iran has used prisoners with Western ties as bargaining chips in negotiations Western journalists have been held in the past was detained by Iran in 2009 for around 100 days before being released who was held for more than 540 days before being journalist Cecilia Sala was released from prison after 21 days of detention in the infamous Evin prison in Tehran “Thanks to intense work on diplomatic and intelligence channels, our compatriot has been released by the Iranian authorities and is returning to Italy,” according to a statement from her publication Il Foglio husband of human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh a day before she was supposed to return back to Italy Italy’s government has denounced her arrest as “unacceptable,” and Italian foreign minister Antonio Tajani has described efforts to secure her release as “complicated.”  At Women Press Freedom, we have called for international condemnation and for European and international leaders to take immediate action toward Sala’s release After conversations within diplomatic circles we learned Iran may have arrested Sala in an act of retaliation linked to ongoing disputes between Tehran and Rome including the arrest in Italy of Mohammad Abedini Najafabadi Using “hostage diplomacy” tactics on a European journalist is an an attack on the press and democracy itself before I started the Coalition For Women in Journalism (CFWIJ) I had only seen these tactics used by terrorist groups But hostage diplomacy is becoming more commonplace as a blackmail tactic by hegemonic states A recent example is Russia’s arrest and detainment of hostages including American journalists Alsu Kurmasheva and Evan Gershkovich who were used as bargaining chips in high-stakes geopolitical games between Russia and the United States Sala’s prolonged detention would not only escalate tensions between Tehran and Rome but could also galvanize broader European and transatlantic unity against Iran’s tactics—something Iran may have already considered If the international community does not join advocacy groups like ours and Italian news organizations calling for Sala’s release it could also become the next symbol of significant failures in international diplomacy and human rights.  Failure to secure Sala’s release would undermine the E.U.’s credibility as a defender of democratic values and could weaken its position in future negotiations with Iran Journalism has increasingly become a high-risk profession: in conflict zones and authoritarian contexts but also in more commonplace interactions on the global stage where they face the risk of being used as bartering chips by rogue states amidst crumbling relationships between countries—creating a chilling effect on international reporting If Iran is allowed to continue its detention unchallenged it will embolden other regimes to replicate similar tactics Leading our global advocacy work at Women Press Freedom which involves working on similar complicated cases involving journalists being targeted for their work in countries like Iran I can say with insight: Iran is far from worried about further straining its already fragile relationships with European nations. Yet every day Sala remains detained reinforces the perception of Iran as a state that thrives on intimidation For a regime already grappling with economic turmoil and widespread protests Iran is clearly tightening the noose on internal dissent and external pressure Sala’s case serves as a litmus test for its collective response to Iran’s brutal tactics The European Union must demonstrate unity and resolve in defending its citizens and the principles of press freedom and human rights Ms. is wholly owned and published by the Feminist Majority Foundation Our spring 2025 issue focuses on innovation building a and multimedia are a great resource for many we speak with a company focused on ensuring that they develop creative asset libraries fairly and equitably Alessandra Sala: I’m Alessandra Sala from Shutterstock a podcast on artificial intelligence in business we introduce you to someone innovating with AI I’m also the AI and business strategy guest editor at MIT Sloan Management Review Shervin Khodabandeh: And I’m Shervin Khodabandeh senior partner with BCG and one of the leaders of our AI business MIT SMR and BCG have been researching and publishing on AI since 2017 interviewing hundreds of practitioners and surveying thousands of companies on what it takes to build and to deploy and scale AI capabilities and really transform the way organizations operate Sam and I are happy to be joined by Alessandra Sala senior director of artificial intelligence and data science at Shutterstock Shervin Khodabandeh: I think many of our listeners know about Shutterstock just maybe quickly explain to us what Shutterstock is Alessandra Sala: Shutterstock is much more than just a stock photography company It [has] evolved and transformed so much; Shutterstock has become the go-to platform to train AI models with our library of 825 million creative pieces And the most interesting aspect to me is this creative library — and we’ll talk possibly even further in the context of AI — has been collected through a very structured process over 20 years where every single piece gets reviewed and the standard of quality is very high but it comes from 3 million contributors from across 150 countries around the world really the building of AI applications to provide value to our customers AI products touch pretty much every single experience that you can find at Shutterstock.com today When you search … we don’t only use an ethical approach when we build product; we also use a very ethical approach through our employees to try to upskill So I have even been involved in lectures and tutorials explaining AI to our employees: how we use [it] and how they can get exposed to this field you’re taking leadership roles across a number of organizations just quickly maybe describe your leadership roles across multiple places that you’re involved in Alessandra Sala: I’m the global president of Women in AI which is a nonprofit organization in over 150 countries around the world and I’m also the cochair of [the] Women4Ethical AI platform at UNESCO I’m chairing a standardization collaboration across a number of different standards organizations trying to create a collective set of standards to combat deepfakes whether it was to contribute images or to use some images for my own work So I think maybe if you go back a decade or so you are using these 800 million-plus images as a valuable source for training AI models Tell us more about that and why that’s so important Alessandra Sala: There are a couple of things that we want to highlight how do we develop this trove of creative assets that possess amazing quality photographers and artists have given Shutterstock content and we have reviewed the content for quality for IP [intellectual property] infringement with this massive trove of creative assets at our disposal we have a new trustworthy and ethically sourced set of data And when I say “ethically sourced,” it’s very important in the context of AI We have seen so many companies out there grabbing content from the internet which really means taking everything and building those giant AI models we have an important problem of plagiarism [and] bias in this data set that is uncontrolled I want to give you a stat: If you were just spending one second of your time on an image it would take you 44 years of your life to see 800 million assets So when those models are trained on billions [of] data sets going to a place where you know the data set has been collected over years and all the things that we know we don’t want in our model then Shutterstock has placed itself as a go-to place for any player that wants to build a safe generative AI model Sam Ransbotham: When I first heard about generative AI we don’t even need a Shutterstock anymore because we can have these models magically generate things.” But obviously that’s naive because these models are built off of so many images of the past being ethical and trying to compensate the people who are creating the images is really an important part of your business model But I wonder about all those other companies that maybe won’t be as ethical as Shutterstock How does the world shape out for Shutterstock when you’re trying to behave ethically and do the right thing by the creators and the artists Aren’t you somewhat competing at a disadvantage and I would say it’s now turning into a big advantage for a couple of reasons let me talk just one second about the Contributor Fund We sell those data to big AI companies or startups to build their own models and we share revenue with our contributors Every time we generate an image on Shutterstock.com with our generative solution and we sell that image So it’s a perpetual model that provides them … Even if every transaction is very small if those solutions scale and become billions of interactions every day then the revenue will be important and will be significant are you only doing it because being ethical means keeping the contributor in the loop and providing them a meaningful path for work And I’m happy to share that there are some very recent publications that demonstrate that the models that are built on synthetic data start to degenerate very fast So it’s not only to be ethical and keep your contributors in the loop — contributors are actually necessary for our business moving forward Let’s provide an example that will resonate with everyone: before COVID; after COVID we had no images of masks [or] personal protective equipment If we didn’t have contributors and we relied only on AI-generated technology maybe it couldn’t have been possible to generate the massive amount of images that we now have around all the possible COVID concepts and masks and PPEs but we have also demonstrated that by being ethical the quality of these models over time is going to become really and we’re actually seeing that in some of the images generated by AI where everything looks good So I think you’re making an interesting point The other thing I’d like to get your reaction on is adoption of generative AI has been hindered by many things for many companies and responsible AI considerations have been really with all the points you mentioned: copyright infringement many companies that are using generative AI to create content — images video — for a variety of purposes have been navigating generative AI quite carefully when it comes to content generation from your data Alessandra Sala: So I’d like to take a little bit of a temporal perspective and walk us through from where we are coming Our ethical approach didn’t start when generative AI boomed There was an investment that [dates back a] few years I was the only industry representative at UNESCO to support the ethical recommendation on AI that UNESCO published [and was] approved by 194 countries in the world [It is] the largest recommendation document that has so many countries standing behind it We then translated those high-level principles into practical aspects our TRUST framework: five pillars that are tackling how do you leverage ethically sourced training data Royalties that we have discussed: How do we compensate our artists and give them instruments — even artists that are not part of our network yet — to become part [of it] through their different lenses [Uplift] — bringing opportunity to diverse photographers around the world to give the diversity that sometimes is lacking in those large collections of data And then safeguards [and transparency]: Going back to your question So “commercially safe” means a few things in our world and in our incarnation we have had a large investment from our company to create safety mechanisms that control attempts to generate violent or nonsafe content We provide licensing protection to our customers And when they need our full indemnity protection So not only [do] we generate and sell it; if it requires safety and control mechanisms we have reviewers that can validate that that content is safe And it can be attached with the quality certificate that Shutterstock provides to their customers and it’s a very practical translation of high-level ethical principles into practice you are pioneering an approach to create content with generative AI in a safe and commercially risk-free or risk-managed way I’m curious about your thoughts on [its] application to other domains Do you think there is something for others to learn from this approach Alessandra Sala: So I love your “risk managed” statement because it’s exactly that it’s not the same that we started [with] two years ago It’s not the same that we’ll use in one year are learning how to interface with this technology — how to interact how to create in our ecosystem with this technology they will teach us new ways to explore strengths and new ways to open up weaknesses We have been the first in our space to launch ethically sourced data and our TRUST framework that underpins our ethically safe product which brings front and center this royalty framework to pay contributors The industry recognized that it was the right path forward I’m sure people know about the Content Authenticity Initiative which is a consortium that is the open-source implementation group behind a standards organization which is the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity which is led [by] and [has] big involvement from our competitors We have joined them because we understand the value of demonstrating what is an authentic creation versus what is AI-generated content and certifying this content through standard rules and protocols that we all contribute in this industry So it’s a very open industry where we provide new opportunities for exploring new business models and so on and we take from our competitors an opportunity where we can bring the innovation to our business Sam Ransbotham: So let’s go back; I like the royalty [model] I’d like to know more about how that works we had the sampling [trend start] years ago and there are some agreements that work out But when you’re talking about Shutterstock Can you explain a little bit of the details about that royalty and if an image is generated that’s maybe taking 3% of my content and 2% of Sam’s but we didn’t even know how to distribute it back to our contributors because it is a complicated problem depending on how many assets you have given [us] I’ve only given one asset and Sam has given us his life’s collection Because he’s teaching this model through everything that he has created in his professional life There are two [other approaches] in the industry I only compensate if I’m generating a cup and Sam has given me images of a cup; Sam will get a contribution because the model and the standard … A cup is a cup and swimming equipment is swimming equipment only if it has the comprehensive understanding of all the concepts in the world So if you have given me an image that is so valuable on the marketplace I again disagree with that through the lens of diversity We know that sometimes what’s popular is not the full representation of our world we have seen the movement toward diverse content and We only pay the contributors that are already gaining a lot of money from our marketplace We should be able to distribute wealth to everyone we have some amazing leadership and strategic thought leadership discussions with our CTO and [we are] thinking of new models for attribution And by “quality,” we mean aesthetically pleasing content safe content — so a very general definition of quality And maybe those attribution models will evolve but those are the ones that are used today Sam Ransbotham: But the academic in me has to push back a little bit because if I think about your example of you and your swimming images I may just flood your market with lots and lots of cup images that are low quality that’s exactly the issue when you attribute based on volume what we have done … we have an amazing service that is able to discover duplicates or things that are quite similar how many strawberry images do you really need your model to learn from there is a quality selection and a duplication screening so that the catalog the collection that we actually use for training Shervin Khodabandeh: I wanted to ask you about something in not-so-distant a future the boundaries of technology and art are being challenged videos — generated entirely by AI that are quite effective in eliciting emotional responses that a magnificent piece of art would What do you think the future of art and content creation looks like five or 10 years from now doing really amazing stuff that’s beyond a human’s imagination I also use our AI generative tool to create things that I would never be able to And I think there is an interesting segmentation that we need to do for people unable to create that is empowered through those tools [to] a great extent The empowerment that we give to professional artists and photographers through those tools may very much not fit into the final creation or the full creation but more into their creative process — how to get inspired how to try a few ideas without creating a photo shoot that we know takes so much logistics and time and money but they can stage They can prepare possible outcomes of what they want to realize and then only use the one that resonates most with their commercial outcome or opportunity So I think different people will be empowered through this technology at different levels I don’t think we have seen where this technology can bring us but I believe humans have always evolved with every single tool that we have [been] given Our human ability doesn’t allow us to move through space at that speed — [it] possibly will never [happen] But we have used aviation as an instrument to empower our society to reach new goals And I believe AI will similarly empower us to a level that we don’t have yet and get to a new height I spent the summer looking at some cave paintings at the Tito Bustillo caves and I was thinking how different those are from our modern images And those people had to really work to get something that looked vaguely like a horse onto the wall of a cave I don’t like that horse.” I think this is really a fascinating transition when technology’s enabling a different set of skills And Shervin, we saw this with Tye Sheridan in the Wonder Dynamics [episode] They’re trying to make CGI available to the masses instead of just the big companies It seemed like exactly what’s happening here You’re really dropping the cost of production which really is going to make creativity much more valuable — or I hope it is It’s going to make human creativity more valuable I think that’s a pretty optimistic take on that Sam Ransbotham: Let’s transition a little bit We just want you to answer with the first thing that comes to your mind What’s the biggest opportunity for artificial intelligence right now Alessandra Sala: Empowering humans into our next evolutionary step What’s the biggest misconception that people have about AI Alessandra Sala: That it can replace our know-how I think there is a lot that needs to be controlled in this technology in order to empower us And what was the first career that you wanted Alessandra Sala: I wanted to be a mechanic and a pilot When is there too much artificial intelligence Alessandra Sala: I don’t think there will ever be too much It’s like saying “How much is too much air?” I can breathe people can always think of something that’s too much Is there something that you wish that artificial intelligence could do right now that it can’t currently do I wish we had more governance structure around this technology like in the aviation space; it’s an environment where it is safety first I think we need to move our innovation hat into safety first as it’s reaching millions of people every day the effects — as we’re reaching millions of people too — that these models that just build off of self-generated images — that’s going to be a problem And I really hadn’t thought about a lot of these difficulties until you brought them up Thanks for taking the time to talk with us today Shervin Khodabandeh: This conversation was quite illuminating and data science is a refinery that makes it useful What these guys have done is basically said we have content; we license it to you so you don’t have to go create that yourself.” Great we have all this data — hundreds of millions of images — that can be the oil that the generative AI is training on to now create content And imagine an advertisement for a diamond company or a jeweler where a man is about to propose to the woman And right before they make their last jump to get there and is like “Will you marry me?” And there is an aerial view It would cost hundreds of millions of dollars and it would be called “Mission Impossible” if they did it this can be done with somebody sitting by their laptop on a couch and just typing the context and without a single producer or actor or cameraman or location scout I think Ross Anderson was one of the authors on that; he’s just passed away He was a great figure in the computer security community And I think Shutterstock is in an interesting position especially when the volume and the label’s there I hope synthetic oil works as good as real oil Sam Ransbotham: Because that’s what’s in your car Shervin Khodabandeh: I still like internal combustion engines vice president and head of AI and machine learning at to calm me down,” she said adding that the interrogator would use psychological techniques to “break her.” “In some moments they try to make you relax by giving you a prize and other times they try to break you by giving you bad news,” she said Sala said she never thought that her release would happen so quickly “This has been the fastest operation to release a prisoner in Iran since the 1980s I have been following Iran as a journalist and I knew the other cases so I knew that 21 days was not an option,” she said During her time in Tehran’s Evin prison without a mattress to sleep on and with does not only mean being in a cell alone but it also means not having any distraction,” she said “You are always alone even when you are not alone because even when they are interrogating you The guards’ faces are also covered,” she added Sala said that from her cell she could occasionally hear noises from other cells of prisoners trying to harm themselves to bang her head as hard as she could Performances will be staged in the auditorium of the high school with evening performances at 7 pm November 14 to 16 and a matinee performance at 2 pm November 17 and are available for purchase at the door before each performance Letters To Sala is a play and biographical drama that follows the true story of the survival of a young woman named Sala through wartime Germany and several labor camps in the Holocaust when Sala’s daughter and two granddaughters discover the letters she saved while in the camps they rediscover history and all that she went through for themselves Letters to Sala was adapted into a play by Arlene Hutton and is based on the book Sala’s Gift by Ann Kirschner The book is an account of Ann’s mother Sala Kirschner’s experiences in the Holocaust and is based on the collection of over 300 letters written by family and friends that her mother kept safe and eventually gave her The show is directed by NHS seniors Sadie Baimel and Parker Mauri who are both extremely excited to direct the show together They said that the NHS fall drama is typically student directed The students directing the fall drama are often seniors Baimel is the one who ultimately chose Letters to Sala as this year’s fall drama earlier this summer “I went home and read the script that I was lent .. and it just checked all the boxes and everything I wanted and was looking for in a show.” Preparing and working for Letters to Sala has been a lot considering the number of people they are working with This is the first time that either of them have managed a project of this scale One of the most difficult aspects of the directing process has been scheduling according to Baimel She said she knew making sure that everybody is there when they need them to be would be difficult going into the project but that she did not expect just how difficult it would be the large number of people involved with the show is a part of why Baimel said that she chose it in the first place Baimel said that she really wanted to do a show that could fit an ensemble because doing the fall drama as a freshman was how she made all of her friends and directing Letters to Sala is the culmination of her experience with NHS Drama so far having only gotten involved some time around junior year While this is one of the last things she gets to do with drama before graduating this spring Mauri said that she is not that sad about it because “this is me getting back all the time I didn’t get with theater before.” “[Baimel] had the experience of being a freshman and making friends with all the seniors but now I have the experience of being a senior making friends with all the freshmen and encouraging them,” Mauri continued but I’m more happy that I could do it at all has been working on something special during the production of the show While Gabriel has been the one primarily in contact with them everyone had the chance to speak to them during a Zoom meeting on Monday students could ask Ann and Hutton questions about the show Gabriel said that this is an incredibly unique experience for the students and that she is lucky to have been able to stay in touch with both Ann and Hutton they will attend a special performance of Letters to Sala on Friday November 15 held during the school day for ninth grade Western Studies students Knowing that the playwright of the play and the author of the book whose mom’s experiences are the basis of the play does “put a little more pressure on everybody” according to Mauri “There are cast members in particular who are playing characters that the people we’re going to meet on Monday [during the Zoom call] either are but also kind of terrifying,” Mauri said during rehearsal on Friday It is Baimel and Mauri’s shared passion for theater that has led them to direct Letters to Sala together and they both said they want to do justice to the source material despite the pressure they feel The subject matter of Letters to Sala is especially important to both of them said that it is always important to remember the Holocaust and honor those that they lost “And especially right now with everything that’s going on all over the world it’s so important that we remember that this is very real and that it can happen and what that’s like for the normal person living now.” Mauri said that it is important for people to remember that the Holocaust is not an isolated thing that happened and that something that happened so many years ago can still affect people “I feel like there are some things that we don’t want to talk about because it’s hard Reporter Jenna Visca can be reached at jenna@thebee.com You must be logged in to post a comment.
