The first fossil-free electric road in the world for lorries, route E16 outside the town of Sandviken in North-Central Sweden, was inaugurated in June 2016. Construction of the road attracted considerable interest, both in Sweden and abroad, and the EU-funded subproject ‘Hosting, innovation, regional development and synergies around electric roads for fossil-heavy logistics – VIRUS’ built a visitor centre to host field trips to the site.
We have had visitors from Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Korea, Japan and Norway. Some are mostly interested in the trucks, others in the electricity supply or how we have handled the project itself, for example regarding the laws and procurement regulations.
Most visits to the 2 km section of road begin at the centre. Located in Sandviken’s Sandbacka Science Park, the centre brings researchers and project groups together to work on issues related to security, business models, regulation, operation and maintenance of electric roads, and the creation of ancillary services.
Visitors listen to presentations explaining the background of the road’s development, before visiting the site, watching a demonstration and getting the chance to ride in one of the two specially designed hybrid lorries operating on the route.
Running between the Hillsta junction, near the village of Kungsgården, and Sandviken, the road has electrical contact lines above the right lane, supported by poles placed at 60 m intervals. Lorries connect to the lines via pantographs on their roofs, enabling them to run solely on electricity at speeds of up to 90 km/h while generating no emissions and making little noise. Where the overhead lines end, the lorries switch back to a diesel hybrid system.
Developed in line with all relevant legal requirements following collaboration between industry, academia and public authorities, the system is based on technology similar to that used on tramlines. It is the first of its kind to have been installed on a public road.
Following the inauguration, the route underwent an initial two-year demonstration period. During this time trucks used it for one week each month, to test its effectiveness in different weather and traffic conditions. After the demonstration phase, other customised heavy goods vehicles began using it.
Visitors to the centre – who have thus far numbered in excess of 2 200 from 30 countries – help identify opportunities for innovation related to the road and provide new contacts for firms in the region. This means that if a local business has an idea for a potential improvement, it is easy for them to discuss it with other companies elsewhere in the world.
Ideas have emerged for features such as the lighting system and parking spaces with electric charging infrastructure. A spell of cold weather in November 2016 made it necessary to revise the design of the horizontal arms which protrude over the road, to prevent snow from settling on them.
In time, the intention is to electrify the entire section of the E16 between the port of Gävle and the town of Borlänge – a distance of over 100 km. The route could serve as a platform for wider electrification of Sweden’s major roads, which would guarantee clean transport countrywide.
The project has prepared regional SMEs to be part of a new global value chain that will be developed if and when it is time for a full-scale deployment of the overhead electric road system.

Is there a difference between healthy and degraded coastal bays in terms of greenhouse gas emissions and uptake
researchers from different disciplines are working together carrying out various measurements along the Swedish coast
where the first of several days of a new sampling campaign took place
It’s one of the first warm spring days and the ice has recently left the small bay of Sandviken
located about 100 kilometres north of Stockholm
The water is mirror-like and a few swans complete the picturesque scene
But could this idyllic bay also be a climate villain
by emitting greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming
In search of answers to that question a group of researchers from Stockholm University will spend the day by the bay
“We will measure methane, carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide to see if there is a net uptake or release of greenhouse gases from the bay”, explains atmospheric researcher Julika Zinke
“In the long term this will tell us whether the bay acts as a carbon sink or a carbon source.”
This is the first time the measuring equipment is installed on a small motorboat
which is necessary to cover different parts of the shallow bay – apart from one deeper hole
we have only tested the system as a whole in the shower at the office”
Julika Zinke says with a smile when all the parts are finally in place
The boat leaves the pier and cruises back and forth across the bay. To get the full picture of the emissions and carbon uptake in the bay, it’s important to cover both nearshore and offshore parts, as well as parts with different amounts and types of vegetation. Professor Christoph Humborg
Scientific leader of the Baltic Sea Centre and the CoastClim research cooperation is monitoring the incoming data
“What we have here is a typical late winter-early spring situation”
adding: “We have a little bit of oversaturation of methane in the water compared to the air
But in case of carbon dioxide the water is undersaturated
This is because there is a first phytoplankton bloom going on
where the plankton use carbon dioxide for their photosynthesis.”
By further measurements during the year the researchers will assess whether Sandviken is a carbon sink (taking up greenhouse gases over the annual cycle) or a carbon source (emitting more gases over the year than is taken up). This is a key question for CoastClim
where researchers from different disciplines at the Universities of Stockholm and Helsinki are working together to explore the potential of coastal ecosystems to provide natural solutions to mitigate climate change
Sandviken and the other bays included in the ongoing sampling campaign are also being monitored for nutrient concentrations, Secchi depth, turbulence and several other parameters as part of the Thriving Bays restoration project
researchers are testing different techniques to restore heavily eutrophied bays to good ecological status
“The measurements in these bays give us a unique opportunity to assess the extent to which greenhouse gas emissions are the result of degradation of a coastal area”
it will also be possible to assess the climate benefits of restoration.”
A major component of coastal greenhouse gas emissions, expressed as carbon dioxide equivalents, is methane, previous research has shown. Methane is formed under certain circumstances when organic material is decomposed
mainly in anaerobic environments and in the presence of certain microorganisms
Learning more about these processes is another important aspect of understanding the climate impact of the coasts.
On a subsequent trip by the motorboat, researchers Alexis Fonseca and Martijn Hermans take sediment cores from the bottom of the bay – a dirty job best done in galloon dungarees – to measure the methane content and identify the microorganisms present
biogeochemist Martijn Hermans takes one of the sediment cores and punctures it at different depths
He extracts some sediment from the various holes
then injects it into a container with a super-saturated and salty solution
"The super-saline solution stops the microbial activity and
it makes the dissolved methane in the sediment go into the gas phase," explains Martijn Hermans
"But it's very important that the containers are kept upside down so that the methane can't escape.”
The subsequent analysis provides the researchers a profile of the methane concentration in the sediments at different depths
how much methane will be released into the water"
Alexis Fonseca slices other of the sediment cores into pieces corresponding to the depths at which the methane concentration is to be measured
stirring the boxes containing the different slices of sediment
which get darker the deeper he goes into the core
the samples are used for more than amusement
Alexis Fonsecas research is focused on identifying microorganisms – mainly bacteria and archaea – in the sediment.
Using DNA and RNA analysis methods called genomics
because they are responsible for the biogeochemistry”
“Some of the bacteria and archaea are producing methane
My expectation is to find producing organisms in the bottom layers of the sediments
portions of the samples are transferred to tubes and placed in liquid nitrogen at -196 degrees Celsius during transport to the laboratory
we are also testing a new approach – if there are viruses present that are infecting the bacteria and archaea
and how that impacts their abilities to produce and consume methane”
“All these processes are important to understand the greenhouse gas fluxes from a bay like this.”
The project Thriving bays runs 2020-2027 and is conducted by BalticWaters with funding from
Stockholm University and the county administrative board of Stockholm
The Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management has granted funds to Stockholm University for sampling and evaluation in the project areas
about SEK 45 million is invested in the project by the foundation and its partners
The Centre for Coastal Ecosystem and Climate Change Research (CoastClim) evaluates the links between coastal biodiversity
The data will serve as a foundation of a new decision-support system to improve the use and management of coastal ecosystems with the potential for climate change mitigation
The development of CoastClim is part of a strategic partnership between the University of Helsinki (UH) and Stockholm University (SU) that focuses on strengthening collaborative marine ecosystem and climate change research between universities

TOBAGO-born national striker, Kennya “YaYa” Cordner, is among three female nominees vying for Norway’s Female Footballer of the Year award.
Cordner plies her professional trade for Norwegian club, IL Sandviken and according to the club’s website, the TT striker has been the squad’s guiding star this season. She is described as a technically brilliant player, who recently captured the top scorer title during her second season (2019) at IL Sandviken, with a scorching 17 goals in 21 matches.
Following her nomination for the prestigious award, IL Sandviken acknowledged Cordner’s athletic prowess over the past competitive season. The two-time TT Female Footballer of the Year (2005, 2010) was described as, “A useful player with technical brilliance, who can punish any opponent. In the last series round, she decided the match for the top scorer title and throne at the top with 17 scores in the Toppserien (Norwegian top-flight).”
Also nominated for this accolade are Sherida Spitse (Valerenga captain) and Roas top-scorer Synne Jensen.
This is only the 31-year old’s second season at IL Sandviken following previous international stints at Northampton Laurels FC (USA), Kvarnsvedens IK (Sweden), Brisbane Roar (Australia), Seattle Reigns FC Reserves (USA) and Seattle Reign FC to name a few.
NHH has been given the green light for renovation of the main building complex as a ‘kurantprosjekt’ (a building project where the state-owned lessee is obliged to pay the rent from its own budget). This means that the funding is now in place, and that the work can begin as scheduled in 2019.
‘This is an important milestone for NHH. As a business school with international ambitions, we need modern buildings and facilities that match our ambitions,’ says Rector Øystein Thøgersen.
NHH moved to a new campus in Sandviken in 1963. The original buildings now need renovation and upgrading to the current standard.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Erna Solberg and Minister of Research and Higher Education Iselin Nybø visited the school to share the good news that the renovation work can begin in spring 2019.
‘NHH has an international recognized research environment. In order to attain and further develop its international position, facilities that promotes good research and education, are necessary. In two years, the construction will be completed, giving students and staff a greater working environment. This will enhance their wellbeing and cooperation,’ says Prime Minister Solberg.
Statsbygg has been given the job of carrying out the renovation work.
‘NHH is one of Norway’s leading educational institutions. We are looking forward to renovating the school and thereby ensuring the best possible conditions for studies and research,’ says Director General of Statsbygg Harald Nikolaisen.
The plan is that the building will be ready for use again on 1 January 2021.
‘NHH wants to create a forward-looking and vibrant campus that matches our teaching and research. The renovation will contribute to the development of an outstanding learning and research environment that both students and staff will thrive in. We are certain that Statsbygg will manage the building work in a forward-looking and professional manner in line with our needs and interests,’ says Rector Øystein Thøgersen.
By employing new work methods and flexible office solutions, we will increase our area efficiency by 20–25 per cent. The students will get upgraded teaching premises that facilitate modern forms of teaching.
‘We are converting several traditional auditoriums and classrooms into student-active learning rooms. Two of these rooms will be case auditoriums based on the Harvard model. This will give us flexibility in the choice of teaching methods,’ says Øystein Thøgersen.
The project also aims to increase satisfaction with the working environment and indoor climate among both students and staff.
A menace on the football field, known for her speed, agility and scoring ability, Kennya Cordner, more commonly known as “Yaya,” has described her 2019 season as tough, however, she says 2020 is loading for the unleash of the #Yayamonsta2.0.
Cordner was recently presented with the golden boot as the top scorer in Norway for her new club, IL Sandviken, in just her second season there. Cordner’s exploits in the Toppserien – Norway’s top flight – did not go unnoticed and she was nominated for Player of the Year. Although not winning the big award on December 2, Cordner’s season was no fluke and the result of hard work and perseverance.
The experienced 31-year-old dedicated the award to her aunt Penny, who died in 2018 but was extremely close to her.
“I did it for her, she was my number one supporter... she’s been there for me my entire life. I lived with her for most of my life, pretty much, and she’s been there from day one, supporting me, going and coming, and to lose her...
“The day I got the news that she died, I just dropped everything and screamed out in the entire stadium full of people and from that day, it’s just like I lost a big part of my life, knowing that I can’t just pick up the phone and say, ‘Aunty look, look what your niece did.’
“It still hurts but she wouldn’t want me to be sad.”
Cordner said after chatting with her mother she was able to refocus and put in her best performances.
“I spoke to my mum (Cheryl Johnson) and she was like... ‘Stay and stick it out.’ From the first half of the season and when the second half started, I just blocked out everything and just focused on what I have to do on the field and it turned over for me pretty much and it went well from July straight into November.”
Cordner, who has played in Sweden, Australia, Paraguay and the US, is currently home spending time with her family and friends. She is expected to leave on December 29 to head back to Norway.
The uncertainty and unhappiness from last season is now a thing of the past and Cordner is itching to get back on the field in Norway.
“I’m leaving to go back to play with my team in Norway, IL Sandviken to go and do big things again,” she said.
Questioned if she would ever reconsider playing for TT again, Cordner, a two-time TT footballer of the year, said, “At the end of the day, I won’t mind playing for my country but if they don’t have things in place, I would never set foot back on field to play for them.
“I’ve been doing this for how many years, and they didn’t really take care of me...Me coming from Tobago and practising, training hard and going out on the field and doing everything and they didn’t put anything in place for us, the Tobagonians, it was unfair. Hence the reason why I had to walk away in 2017 and no one knew the reason why, it was because the TTFA then made it seem like I was disrespectful to the coach (Carolina Morace), when it was never about that.”

Daily news about the Eurovision Song Contest
Last month it seemed like the Swedish municipality of Sandviken wanted to aim for a Eurovision host city bid
but now it has become clear that this idea will not transpire
On June 8th 2023 it was made public that the Sandviken municipality will not participate in a bid to host Eurovision 2024 in Sweden
Proposals were made and reviewed by the Sandviken council
but there was decided not to progress with the bid to host the contest
The final reason for Sandviken to not be part of the bid has not been disclosed
The plans for the bid of Sandviken entailed the contest being hosted in the Göransson Arena
a venue that also hosted the second Semi-final of Melodifestivalen
the televised national selection of Sweden
This year’s contest is won by Sweden’s Loreen with the song “Tattoo”
Loreen’s win marks the first time a female singer has won the Eurovision Song Contest twice, since Loreen also won the 2012 song contest with the song “Euphoria”
which is one of the most successful songs in Eurovision history. Next to this
Loreen is the second singer to win the contest twice; Irish Johnny Logan came before her

A member of the Sandviken city council has come up with a proposal to the council executive board of the city in which this member asks to review the idea to host the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 in Sandviken
The member of the city council does admit that it would bring challenges to host the next contest in Sandviken
but that it is worth to look into the matter
because the region and city of Sandviken can use a boost and recognition
and the city is situated in Gävleborg County
If the contest would be hosted by the city of Sandviken the arena where the event will take place will be the Göransson Arena
which has hosted one of the Semi-finals of Melodifestivalen before
The Göransson Arena has space for no less than 10,000 spectators
