The SIMRISHAMN lineup is affordable and versatile in its application
with chrome-plated metal features alongside spherical frosted glass that is unlike your typical lighting options
You'll appreciate the affordability of these showstopping products
which range from $39.99 for the smallest table/wall lamp to $159.99 for a seven-arm chandelier
these lamps will offer you peace of mind in that realm
with high ratings and plentiful feedback on the various models
Nearly all reviews praise the lamps for their quirky and stylistic design
with negative comments mostly coming in the form of assembly criticism
One happy customer who purchased the floor lamp writes
if you use the bulbs recommend[ed] with this product
If you're more classically inclined in your interior decor
you might not be instantly attracted to these lamps
whose globes offer an element of whimsy to any interior
If you like being a little quirky with your home's design
there are practically limitless options to style with this lamp lineup
The small table/wall lamp makes a great wall sconce option for an entryway or hallway (consider purchasing an adhesive cord hider to paint the color of your wall to conceal the obvious black cord that will dangle from the fixture)
A particularly fun way to implement more lighting over a kitchen bar is with the SIMRISHAMN pendant fixture ($89.99)
and of course you can't resist adding one of the floor lamps ($109.99) to your living room or bedroom
The clip demonstrates the warm glow that you can achieve by purchasing this item
and comments on the video seem to love the way it ties the room together
Another short video by @gehtdichnichtsanna demonstrates the easy unboxing and assembly of a table lamp
which from the looks of it will require only a few minutes to put together
Easily within reach of most budgets and versatile enough for many interior styles
the SIMRISHAMN could be the perfect addition to your home's lighting game
The special challenges of the Baltic Sea make the fish stocks particularly vulnerable
and require more careful management and a sharp reduction in fishing pressure
This was the message from the Baltic Sea Centre's researchers to the new EU Commissioner Costas Kadis
Sweden is strongly represented in the European Parliament's Committee on Fisheries (PECH)
with six Swedish MEPs sitting as full or substitute members
MEPs from six different Swedish parties joined forces to welcome the new EU Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans
to Sweden to discuss the urgent situation of fish stocks in the Baltic Sea
The visit took place at the Marine Centre in Simrishamn
one of the few places in Sweden where local commercial fishing is still active
Among those invited to provide a deeper understanding of the challenges facing the Baltic Sea were Tina Elfwing
Tina Elfwing explained the special conditions of the Baltic Sea and the major challenges it faces in terms of eutrophication and climate change
Fish play an important role in the ecosystem
which is not sufficiently taken into account in fisheries management and when deciding on fishing quotas
"There is a tendency to blame environmental problems for the crisis in fish stocks," says Henrik Svedäng
"It is of course true that there are serious environmental problems in the Baltic Sea that affect fish
but this is something that fisheries management must adapt to
three of the commercial fish stocks in the Baltic Sea have collapsed completely
leading to total or partial closure of the fisheries
The situation is also very worrying for three of the four stocks still being fished: herring in the Central Baltic and the Gulf of Bothnia
"I tried to explain that it is possible to overfish stocks without intending to do so
because there are so many uncertainties in the stock estimates and in the models used," he adds
you can overestimate the size of the stock
which leads to the fishing quota being set higher than it should be
What is currently set in a closed room (by ICES) as a 'maximum sustainable level' has nothing to do with reality
and when fish stocks are part of such a fragile ecosystem as the Baltic Sea
fishing quotas must be set significantly lower than what MSY calculations (maximum sustainable yield) indicate
Costas Kadis took up his post as Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans in December 2024
and the visit to Sweden is one of his first official trips
"I found the Commissioner interested in the knowledge we were trying to convey," says Tina Elfwing
"He also summarised his impressions at the end in a way that made it clear that he had taken the various messages on board."
Policy analyst Charles Berkow comments that it is unusual for an EU commissioner to visit Sweden
The fact that Costas Kadis chose to come here is probably due to the fact that the lively Swedish debate on fisheries has raised interest in the EU
"Fisheries issues are considered important in Sweden
which is reflected in the strong representation in the Fisheries Committee," says Charles Berkow
there is also a fairly broad cross-party consensus in favour of a more long-term
The EU Commissioner is no doubt curious to know why
I can also imagine that he will want to know how well what he hears from Sweden is anchored in society and within the various parties"
One of the new Commissioner's tasks is to review the Common Fisheries Policy
the European Commission will present a new pact to protect the oceans
politicians will realise that fish in the sea are an important part of the ecosystem and that current management needs to be radically changed if stocks are to recover from today's extremely low levels," says Henrik Svedäng
Sweden's culinary landscape continues to captivate global attention

SwedenGlide along the serene Sydostleden biking trail in the far south of Sweden to discover quaint towns
and we start on our e-bikes in Kivik — one of Skåne’s quaintest little villages
where colourful hollyhocks sway in the front gardens of immaculate
cream-white churches and countless apple orchards
I’m pedalling along the Sydostleden
a biking trail stretching for 170 miles between the coastline of Simrishamn
It’s one of only three national trails in Sweden — a title that certifies routes are of high quality
traffic safe and dotted with experiences and services
The gentle Sydostleden trail is also a great place to start if you want to learn more about the country: taking travellers past farms
it provides a perfect introduction to the Swedish countryside
We make a big loop inland, pulling into Andrarum for a lunch stop. Just like Kivik, it looks like an old-world village and we nab a table at Kaffestugan Alunbruket
it’s now run by the great-grandchild of the original owner who regales us with tales about the village
it was engulfed by a yellow cloud of sulphur from the local alum factory
there’s no sign of the smog — just skies of brilliant blue above the charismatic hobbit-like village
That’s the thing about the Sydostleden — it’s the sort of trail that puts the spotlight on the locals and the compelling towns and villages that pepper the route
We push on down a gravel road in a hilly forest
but there are no tough climbs along the route
and for the most part the cycle paths are paved — making the trail suitable for both beginners and seasoned enthusiasts
a picturesque medieval town where many of the homes have private jetties and the locals have garnered a reputation for their love of eel
that it’s also the home of the Absolut Vodka distillery — its great copper stills have been churning out the world-famous vodka since 1906
you can book boat trips and glide around the UNESCO-protected area
It’s really the sort of place where you have to spend at least a few hours — but we have to carry on

Another soft and diffused option that has been on my nightstand and on my desk is this under-$50 table lamp
I love the gold accents and the shape; it doesn’t take up too much space but still adds lots of light
Your floor could use a little mood lighting, too. You’ll need to buy a bulb and cord set for this shade
but the way it accents the room makes the extra purchases worth your money
It also gives you more opportunities to customize your light
It’d be hard to find an immaculately decorated Brooklyn apartment that doesn’t include this wavy accent lamp

this recycled plastic option is 3D-printed and adds a warm glow to the room
If you couldn’t get your hands on the IKEA Varmblixt table lamp

Mood lights are less about practicality and more about the vibe
but it will look good tucked into a corner on a shelf
If you’ve been thinking about buying a mushroom lamp
here’s an affordable option that reviewers love
offering a few different color options for a warm glow
If you need a little more light than a table lamp
this minimal gold lamp can handle a 60-watt bulb
Sure you have to buy more lightbulbs but consider this affordable find worth it
and you can turn each bulb on and off separately

Golden Globe nomination to Rebecca Ferguson. Fewer teenage moms. Supporting the king
Golden Globe nomination to Rebecca Ferguson
There are fewer teenage moms in Sweden today than 40 years ago. Meanwhile the number of middle age first-time moms is increasing. This according to Socialstyrelsen’s report ”Graviditeter, förlossningar och nyfödda barn” (Pregnancies, births, and newly born). In 1973, 15 percent of all moms were teenagers, today it is only 3 percent.

July 10 (UPI) -- A Swedish hot dog vender has caused outrage with an advertisement featuring a woman's lips wrapped around a "thick sausage."
A prime example of an poorly-thought through act and a traditional gender approach with the aim of drawing in customers," gender studies expert Britten Dehlin told the Swedish-language Ystads Allehanda newspaper
Dehlin said the hot dog stand previously bore an advertisement depicting a naked woman wrapped around a sausage
She said the kiosk's advertisements give the wrong impression about gender equality in the city
we want Simrishamn to have a good reputation and take the lead with our gender equality work
but it's working against equality," she said
The youngsters don't get it -- they only see the sausage," he said
Andersson said the image was previously used by Swedish food retailer Scan
said he has not seen the advertisement but plans to have it removed
Michelle Alphe's French classes in Franklin High School
begin the same way most days: with a Chromebook
I'll post their assignments [on Google Classroom] and the students get right on the computers
and can start working right away," Alphe told Business Insider
Advanced classes might read an article in French
then record a video in which they discuss what's different between the US and the country they read about
They then post the video on Google Classroom
and their peers watch and comment on the video
"At first I was resistant to it — I'm a technophobe," Alphe told Business Insider
I think it has made students' work easier too."
This scene is repeated in classrooms around the US
where education is increasingly starting to revolve around Google for Education apps and Google's Chromebook laptops.
Google says there are 80 million educators and students globally using G Suite for Education
There are 40 million global users of Google Classroom specifically
Google is not alone in trying to making inroads on the hardware and software sides of the classroom
where students can access documents and information for their classes
a repository for textbooks and other class materials
The average cost for learning management software is $5 to $8 per student annually, according to Ben Davis, a senior educator analyst at the market-research firm Futuresource Consulting. For a district such as Baltimore
that could cost nearly $1 million a year.
But Google Classroom and G Suite for Education are totally free
Google has tens of millions of users for its education software
but it chooses not to make a cent off of them
Google said a single Chromebook starts at $149 per unit for classrooms
Google has created teaching courses and certifications
and creates tools like a closed-captioning function for students giving presentations on Google Slides
"You could argue that part of it is philanthropic," Jonathan Rochelle
a product management director for G Suite for Education
having educators and students experience our products is important."
He added: "Our motivation is to make sure people have an option to work better."
But Google for Education has raised suspicions for ed-tech analysts and educators
"They are still selling their Google products to kids
who are being taught to trust them," Keith Chiappone
an eighth-grade English teacher at Conackamack Middle School in Piscataway Township
when they are of age where they can legally make decisions
may seem over the top to those who managed to learn to read and write without computers or with occasional visits to the school computer lab
But districts that furnish each student with a laptop aren't doing so by their own choice alone. Since the late 2000s, legislatures in states such as Florida, Virginia, and California began passing laws to call for digital classrooms and textbooks
"There's an increasing push to have our students become digitally literate and move into the workforce seamlessly through the use of digital tools," said Elita Driskill, the director of technology for Arlington Independent School District in Arlington
"The state recognizes the need for students to be ready for the workplace."
Initiatives for "digital content" initially put undue pressure on district administrators, said Dwayne Alton, who is in charge of information technology for the School District of Lee County in Fort Myers
the 33rd-largest in the US with 93,000 students
Read more: Here's how technology is shaping the future of education
we're going to be super modern,'" Alton told Business Insider
Kids should be learning with technology and school districts should be required to transition from paper to digital content.'"
Now teachers can track students' progress through in-class activities in real time and assess where a student is excelling or needs help
It's allowed for individual learning beyond separating kids into slow and fast reading groups
"We know that students move at different paces," Alton said
"We want to make sure we're not just teaching to the middle
but providing enrichment for the higher levels and remediation for the lower levels."
"The market is right at the beginning of digital transformation with devices coming into student hands
and so lots of companies across the education ecosystem are investing in digital," Davis of Futuresource told Business Insider
Education-only companies such as Blackboard, which was founded in 1997, and corporations like Microsoft and Apple had been long positioned in the classroom
and they looked poised to benefit from this growth

Danny Wagner was a middle-school science teacher in his native Kentucky for nine years before he moved to the Bay Area to become a tech lead at San Francisco Unified School District
He was a teacher as Google Classroom first made its big push into the ed-tech market in the early 2010s
when state legislatures were pushing for digital classrooms
and Google Classroom was the first tool that solved that problem," Wagner
who is now an editor of ed-tech reviews at Common Sense Media
"Google Classroom took off like grass on fire," Gartner Research vice president Kelly Calhoun Williams
who focuses on K-12 education and was in public education for 25 years
Chromebooks and other Google devices made up 58% of all devices purchased for US classrooms in 2017, according to Futuresource data
Not every Chromebook-enabled school uses Google Classroom
and many classrooms without Chromebooks use Google Classroom or G Suite for Education.
Apple's market share in mobile devices for education sank by 33 percentage points from 2012 to 2017
while Microsoft's decreased by 21 percentage points
Franklin High School has had G Suite for Education for only about four years
has been using Google products in her classroom for a decade.
Muir is enthusiastic about Google Classroom's features
She can quickly see how her students are performing on certain tasks
Absent students can keep up with assignments and activities by simply checking the Google Classroom homepage
It's easier for clubs to organize and for teachers to share learning resources with each other
have access to the technology. All Franklin students have Chromebooks thanks to a one-to-one initiative
in which each student has his or her own Chromebook starting in middle school
Davis of Futuresource said between 20% and 30% of US classrooms have similar one-to-one programs.
"I can edit a Google Doc on my phone," Muir went on
"I can connect with Google Classroom on my phone no matter where I am
There are a lot of options and accessibility
Google created Google Classroom as a response to educators using Google Docs as a collaboration tool among other teachers and for their students
Google Classroom doesn't address every classroom need
and higher-level demographic and conduct information. Its simplicity is part of why it's won over so many teachers
"It was hugely popular because it was just so darn simple," Williams said
"Anybody could pick it up and understand what it was for and use it."
a teacher at Parsons Elementary School in North Brunswick
said Google Classroom is incredibly easy to use
particularly because she already had a Gmail account
That familiarity with Google products is good for tech-averse educators
"I know a lot of teachers who are overwhelmed by the technology and feel a little lost," Guzio told Business Insider
You cannot [overstate] how important that was for Google Classroom's success."
Driskell said that Arlington purchased Chromebook carts
Alton said the Lee County School District is using more free content
and that its spending on technology has increased over the years
a middle-school English teacher in the Bay Area
Google can acclimatize millions of children to its products
"It's pretty clear what motive Google has," Williams at Gartner Research said
"This is not a product they're selling; this is not a commercial product
It's getting lots of people very used to working in a Google environment."
Even teachers who feel squeamish about the product don't have an option but to use it
Chromebooks are the technology furnished in Petrone's district
while Chiappone of Piscataway said he was required to use Google Classroom in his previous district
"It's not our choice what software we use," Chiappone said
"Every school district will purchase a license for specific software
'I'm going to go use this other software,' because just about everything has a subscription fee."
teachers said they were already strapped for time and energy
There simply aren't enough hours in the day to ponder how their district-provided software might be affecting them and their students
"There is a bit of a mistrust to Google in some way from the teacher standpoint because it is such a large corporation offering everything for free," Wagner said
they are aware that there's a manipulation
"But while we ponder these overarching questions

Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden paid a visit to the Marine Centre and Simris Alg late last week.
On Thursday, Victoria began a day of engagements focusing on marine life and the marine economy.
In the morning, she visited the Marine Centre in Simrishamn with the Director-General of the Sea and Water Authority, Jakob Granit, who filled her in on what the Centre does; as well as learning the results of the MARELITT Baltic project, which is a joint project between Sweden, Poland, Germany and Estonia to find lost fishing gear, or ghost yarn – lost fishing nets and trawls – in the Baltic Sea.
“We had an intensive program, but everything has worked out perfectly and I felt that the Crown Princess was very pleased with the day,” Madeleine Lundin, the Development Manager at the Marine Centre said in a press release on the Centre’s official website.
“The Crown Princess’s commitment to the Baltic Sea environment is great and she works actively with various marine environment issues, which means that she is well versed in the basics. It feels good that we could help give the Crown Princess more knowledge by sharing our experience.”
Crown Princess Victoria also met with fishermen aboard a boat outside the Marine Centre who work to find ghost yarn in the Baltic. Following this, Victoria traveled with the Coast Guard to the shipwreck of the Villon before returning back to the Centre for lunch.
In the afternoon, Victoria visited Simris Alg.
Simris Alg is an algae-growing agribusiness located in Hammenhög, Sweden. According to its website, the company aims to “empower healthy and planet-friendly lifestyles by delivering superior products from algae” in an effort to be “a landmark business for the bio-based economy.”
In a blog post on the Simris Alg website, the company says that they were honoured to welcome Victoria as they know of her “dedication to marine science, the oceans and aquatic environments, and we were happy to share our own passion for ocean health with her.”
During her tour of the facilities, Victoria learned about the company’s efforts to promote a circular economy “by creating sustainable loops with neighbouring farms and industries,” as well as how Omega-3 can help curb overfishing.
Victoria also visited the greenhouses and labs to see how microalgae are grown. She was able to see microalgae strains in a microscope and helped harvest some before undertaking a taste-testing of algae snacks and vegan ice cream.

A 1968 television series based on Piraten’s 1932 novel “Bombi Bitt och jag” [Bombi Bitt and I] became the starting point for renowned Swedish actor Stellan Skargård’s acting career
One of the best known quotes of the popular author can be found on his gravestone in the village Ravlunda just outside of Kivik:
"Här under är askan av en man som hade vanan att skjuta allt till morgondagen
Dock bättrades han på sitt yttersta och dog verkligen den 31 januari 1972."
[Here below rests the remains of a man who had the habit of delaying everything until a day later
