“I believe in sharing our lives and vulnerabilities with one another.“ Lauren Skare Ferry ’17 is a social worker in the intensive care unit at Methodist Hospital. Read her reflection below. My role models, when it comes to creating and maintaining relationships, are my parents. They’re both pastors, and I watched them make connections with other people. It gave me a foundation — and a yearning — for social connection. My parents were good at cultivating relationships among my siblings with daily check-ins. Every night, for example, we did “highs and lows” as a family, talking about the best part of our day and not-so-great part of our day. I liked the way that it allowed us to be individuals, but also to share our lives, our vulnerabilities, and our emotions with other people. I’m drawn to people who are able to sit with me and celebrate my joys, but also show up and be with me during sadness or trials. I also think it’s important to understand the way that relationships have different seasons. My friends at St. Olaf are incredibly important to me. When we were students, I saw them every day, I lived with them, and I ate with them. But when I left St. Olaf, we had to find new ways to maintain those connections. For a couple of my friends, that has meant watching The Bachelor together each week. Of course, it’s not about The Bachelor at all. It’s an excuse to get together once a week. As an ICU social worker, I see a lot of people grieving — either a critical illness, or at the end of life. Big moments, like trips together, come up. But simpler things do, too — like they will miss talking to their loved ones. They will miss their smiles. These little things create a strong sense of connection. So much of what builds meaningful relationships is our ability to be vulnerable with one another, and to express our authentic selves. We are grateful for the impact your gifts make possible on the Hill. Follow along as Phil Hands draws Donald Trump yelling at the Constitution We would be better served if U.S. Sen. Back in January of 1978, newly married John and Mona Skare, shown above in a current photo, made the decision to purchase the old Bricelyn Cooperative Creamery building and turn it into their home. The block wall, shown at right in the above photo, is part of the original structure. John and Mona Skare smile and laugh as they reminisce and share the story of how they came to live in their current home, which once was a thriving business known as the Bricelyn Cooperative Creamery. “We got married in December of 1977,” Mona recalls. “One month later, in January, John showed the old creamery building to me.” According to the couple, to say that it was a fixer-upper would be a major understatement. “It had broken windows and was full of snow, junk and broken glass,” Mona says. “John thought we could make it into a home.” And John was able to sell her on the idea. “Love will make you do funny things,” Mona says, laughing. First, they had to figure out who had the authority to sell the property. “The building was constructed in 1931,” John comments. “But, the creamery had been out of business since 1952 and had been used for storage for a number of years.” John worked with a lawyer in Blue Earth and placed a notice in the paper three times searching for anyone who owned an interest in the building. Eventually, John and Mona were able to take possession of the property. “The guy who was storing some metal in the building came and got his stuff,” John notes. “At that time there was still a gentleman who had a milk route and he was still using the walk-in cooler.” Eventually John and Mona were able to get to work on their new property with the goal of making one third of the building suitable to live in. “I think a lot of people in town were wondering about us and what were these crazy people doing,” Mona says. “They were thinking, ‘What is going on?'” She smiles and shares people figured out we were OK. “They became our friends,” she comments. Bricelyn was John’s hometown. His family had moved to the city when John’s father got the job as the depot manager for the railroad. Mona hailed from Decorah, Iowa. She went to college at the University of Iowa and became a special education teacher. “I taught 24 years in Albert Lea, 11 in Blue Earth, five in Forest City, Iowa, and a year in DeWitt, Iowa,” Mona shares. Meanwhile, John got his degree from Mankato State University. “I was an art teacher,” John says. “I taught in DeWitt and Klemme, Iowa. I also worked for many years at Winnebago Industries in Forest City.” While working on remodeling the creamery to make it into a house, John and Mona lived with John’s parents for a year and then rented a house until they could move into the creamery. “John’s parents had cats and I am allergic to cats, so that didn’t work out too well,” Mona says. Eventually, they made the move into their “new” home. “We had sheetrock walls and only the sub flooring,” Mona explains. “But we moved in.” Remodeling the creamery presented its own unique set of issues for John and Mona to deal with. “There were some big blocks of cement we had to break up so they could be removed,” Mona remarks. “We both operated jack hammers to get the job done.” But the first thing the couple did was seal up the outside of the house. “We put on a pitched roof and fixed the windows and doors on the back third of the building,” John says. “That had to be done before we could move on to any interior work.” The couple share they had help from Marshal Bartels of Blue Earth who did a lot of the outdoor carpentry work and helped seal the structure up. Part of the old creamery had a second story with cement stairs leading up to the area. That space would become John’s studio. “I used to do a lot of weaving and that space provided me an area for my looms and a place to work,” John comments. The walk-in cooler room remains in their house, only now it is used for storage. It still has the heavy door at its entrance with its original hardware. “We tried to preserve some of the original building,” Mona says. “We pretty much used the structure that was here. We didn’t change too many walls.” The couple eventually added an upstairs loft with bedrooms, a bathroom and a living room. They also redid the original entryway into the building. “When we just had one third of the house fit for living the entrance to our home was on the side of the building,” John says. “I think it was in 2012 that we finished the rest of the house.” Part of getting the house ready to live in involved building a raised floor in the original area that they were first working on. “We did that so we could run the pipes for the plumbing underneath the floor,” John says. Their furnishings inside of their home feature many family heirlooms, including a heavy-duty wood bench that had been built and used by Mona’s father. As for the decorations adorning the walls, they definitely have a Norwegian flavor. “My dad’s parents were born in Norway,” John shares. “And my paternal grandmother was born in Norway,” Mona adds. John and Mona raised two daughters, Sarah and Anna, in their beautiful home. In fact, John became a stay-at-home dad and took care of the girls while being able to spend some time in his studio. “I don’t really know if that’s true,” he says. “I think they took care of me.” From an abandoned, run-down creamery to a warm, inviting, beautiful home – it has been quite an adventure for the couple. But, as Mona said earlier, “Love will make you do funny things.” Copyright © 2025 Ogden Newspapers of Minnesota, Inc. | https://www.faribaultcountyregister.com | 125 N. Skare, a postdoctoral researcher at the Center for International Studies, Sciences Po, Paris, has assembled and translated twenty documents written by the leaders of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), the anti-Israel terrorist group operating primarily out of the Gaza Strip since the group’s inception in 1981. The documents (by leaders such as Fathi Shiqaqi and Ramadan Abdallah Shallah, the group’s first two secretaries general), help the reader better understand the ideology of a generally under-analyzed organization. They delve into the founding and thinking of the group, its perspectives on Islamic history and religion, its views on violence, and its relations with other Palestinian factions such as Hamas, Fatah, and the Palestine Liberation Organization. In short, Skare provides valuable primary texts from which one can learn much about PIJ’s origins and outlook while his notes suggest that he drew too close to his research subjects—an all too-common problem in the deeply tainted field of Middle Eastern studies. © 2025 Middle East Forum • E-mail: info@meforum.org • Tel: 1 (215) 546-5406 / Research / Research areas, centres and networks / Research groups / Neuroradiology - MRI physics – Stefan Skare's research group Neuroradiology - MRI physics – Stefan Skare's research groupThe research group consists of MR physicists at Karolinska University Hospital and GE Healthcare and develops new imaging methods for brain MRI The research group consists of MR physicists and engineers at the Karolinska University Hospital driving research and development of new MR imaging acquisition methods for clinical use in neuroradiology We develop software for the MR scanner image capture process (pulse sequences) as well as image corrections and image reconstruction methods - all integrated into our clinical environment and NeuroMix have also been shared with other clinics and hospitals around the world where each series of images typically takes several minutes to acquire a time during which the patient needs to lie still The research group has two major research themes to deal with this issue One is ultra-fast imaging such as NeuroMix producing nine series with the most common MR contrasts in under 3 min real-time) motion correction so that patients can move their heads freely during the MR examination with good diagnostic image quality This is particularly important for MRI examinations of the pediatric brain where our goal is to drastically reduce the use of general anesthesia which is resource-intensive and not completely risk-free It also leads to long waiting times for MRI and long MRI examinations To make the MR image planes follow the patient's head a continuous measurement of the movement of the head is needed we have purchased a fiber-optic infrared "point-cloud" camera (illuminated in the illustration) from a danish startup company This device measures the position of the patient's head inside the MR scanner about 10 times/sec That information is then communicated to the ongoing pulse sequence acquiring the current image (over several minutes) Motion monitoring of one of our pediatric patients being examined with our motion robust real-time corrected MR protocol based solely on our own pulse sequences Above is a 3D rendering of the child's face as seen by the point cloud camera Below is motion information for the entire MRI scan which is continuously fed back to the imaging process to make the image planes follow the head movements We are also actively working on our own hardware-based sensor - referred to as a WRAD This is an acronym for a Wireless Radiofrequency-triggered Acquisition Device it is a small wireless marker that synchronizes itself to the MRI scanner by detecting RF pulses The device can then eavesdrop on the MR system’s gradient fields (typically very short navigators < 1 ms) and decode its location in the imaging coordinate frame to a high degree of accuracy This allows us to perform low-latency (~3 ms) prospective motion correction with minimal modifications to the scanner setup We believe the simplicity of this approach is critical when performing prospective motion correction on real patients including our sedation-free children’s brain protocol we are constantly iterating the WRAD design with feedback from MR technologists and patients but also from a generic need for better performance and stability This project has a more “engineery” feel compared to some of our other goals and includes design and 3D modeling with tangible-physical results Despite real-time motion correction with Tracoline or WRAD it is fundamentally difficult to obtain good image quality with long-TE 3D sequences such as SWI the phase changes in the brain (which occur due to long echo times) result in image artifacts (top-right a complete image plane is obtained in 0.1 s under the same phase conditions in the brain Several repetitions of the same image plane are averaged after motion correction to increase the SNR to the appropriate level There is a clinical need for 3D RARE images with isotropic voxels that can be reformatted into several different planes it increases the information for the radiologist and facilitates the review of the images The sequences typically used to collect these 3D data sets require long echo trains which makes them sensitive to movement and also leads to so-called "T2 blurring" In order to provide these reformatable volumes for patients who cannot lie still we have developed a movement-robust alternative can obtain images with the same qualities as its 3D counterpart but at the same time can withstand large head movements Here we show one slice per contrast from NeuroMix on a pediatric patient as the first scan in our motion robust pediatric MR protocol With a scan time for NeuroMix of ~2:40 min where the 2D contrasts are motion robust and can be registered against each other in the reconstruction these images usually turn out well even in the presence of larger head movements And with future integration with WRAD & Tracoline NeuroMix will be even more robust against head motion Niekerk A, Berglund J, Sprenger S, Norbeck O, Avventi E, Rydén H, Skare S. I was there to ask questions about drones. She was there as part of a training program for military leadership. Lt. Col. Siri Skare, Norway’s first female fighter pilot and I sat on a bench in the austere close-cropped lawn outside the base hotel and talked She was about to leave to join the United Nations mission to Mazar-e-Sharif in Afghanistan Her job there would include work on issues related to women’s rights She wanted to learn and to understand about Muslim women Her sincerity, the earnest curiosity of her questions, was striking. I did not believe in the possibility that any Westerners could do any good at all in Afghanistan or anywhere else in the region. The War on Terror, the occupation of Afghanistan, the use of my own country, Pakistan, as a supply route for American troops and the remote control drone deaths and we spoke about it that afternoon; but she also believed that good work could be done specifically because it was a UN mission focused on human rights and humanitarian work The last thing we spoke about was our daughters—hers was flying in that afternoon from Oslo We bonded over how gut-wrenching it always is for a mother to say goodbye he called the General’s remarks “unconstitutional.” Word of Jones’s Quran burning got to Afghanistan and to Mazar-e-Sharif, the city where Lt. Col. Skare was posted at the UN compound. It was a Friday, and during prayers, speakers and preachers at the city’s famous Blue Mosque riled up their own congregants urging them to stand up against the insult that had been done to their holy book thousands of men had gathered outside the UN compound they believed that a white and Western person had desecrated their faith so the only white Westerners they could reach would have to pay Later in the afternoon, the gathering became ever more enraged and the cries for avenging the desecration became louder. Against the crowd of thousands of men These policemen appeared overwhelmed by the size of the crowd the protesters saw this and began to press forward and storm the compound the first line of police officers inside the compound—there were only a dozen of them—simply put down their weapons and surrendered to the crowd Two policemen who were hiding behind a water tanker shot at the angry men another managed to disarm one of the policemen and take his Kalashnikov rifle like so many others sacrificed in the path of a war whose goals remain unclear even after twenty years I received an email that took me back to those days immediately after Lt who had found the article I had written years ago about her mother piecing together the bits and pieces of her mother that she could find Wars never end for those who have lost what is dearest to them I wonder whether America can look differently at the events that took place at the UN compound after the insurrection that took place in Washington The storming of the UN compound by a mob riled up by firebrand preachers a crowd willing to do anything to avenge what they perceived as an unalterable wrong So too should the difficulty of discerning complicity of resolving questions such as whether the Capitol Hill police sympathized with the insurgents and let them in Perhaps those Afghan policemen tasked with protecting the UN compound had similar sympathies toward the mob avenging the burning of the Quran Crowds and mobs and faith are more complicated than the us-and-them distinctions of warfare would have one assume Americans have instructed other countries—Afghanistan to take just a few examples—on how to fight the enemy within Those same exhortations seem to have been forgotten now that Americans look at their own terror within There is no solace and no closure for those lost in war those killed because of the distant crimes of others elsewhere Colonel Skare is only a few hours’ drive from Gainesville where the actions of a venomous and Islamophobic church leader indirectly ended up condemning a brave woman to death That was one assailant; the other was the young man who took a stolen gun and used it to take the life of a woman who had only the greatest respect for his faith What closure can there be for that woman’s daughter when neither of these assailants have been punished The end of one war far away does not mean an end to war for Americans At a time when calls for unity ring everywhere Americans must reckon with the truth that American unity has been constituted of a hatred of arbitrary foreign “others” too weak to argue with America America is good at banishing the ghosts of wars past There is no counting up of all the children who have been left motherless and fatherless and who search in this or that corner of the internet for some recollection of the rekindled memory of a brave woman wrongly killed is only that Americans can now understand the cruelty of war in a way that was impossible before In a media environment that tolerates tail-chasing The Baffler is a rare publication willing to shake the pundit class free of their own worst impulses But running a charitable organization of this magnitude requires serious dough and subscriptions only cover a fraction of our costs we rely on the good will of generous readers like you So if you like the article you just read—or hate it so you can ridicule us online for years to come—please consider making a one-time donation to The Baffler Rafia Zakaria is the author of Against White Feminism (W.W Bucket Hat / $30 Rodney “Rod” Skare, age 85, of Spring Valley, MN died peacefully on Sunday April 11th, 2021 surrounded by his family at Methodist Hospital in Rochester, MN. Rekawek sat down with Eric Skare of the University of Oslo and author of “Palestinian Islamic Jihad: Islamist Writings on Resistance and Religion” to discuss the group in the context of the current Israel-Palestine conflict You are THE expert on the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) a little-known terrorist group mainly operating out of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank How is it possible that there is space for another radical Islamist outfit when Hamas is supposedly the all-controlling entity in Gaza we have to understand why PIJ was founded in 1981 and has been engaged in armed struggle from 1984 onwards PIJ targeted Israelis five years before Hamas did the same in 1989 violence was what distinguished them from the Palestinian Muslim Brotherhood I think it's very important to understand that PIJ was always a historical product of a very specific stage in Palestinian history because the fact was that if you were a Palestinian in the in Gaza Strip in the 1980s and you wanted to carry out or participate in the armed struggle against the Israeli occupation there was no viable organisational alternatives for you to join You technically had the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) and its factions that were politically and ideologically or militarily irrelevant in the Gaza Strip in the 1980s particularly after the evacuation from Beirut in 1982 to Tunisia the founding fathers of the PIJ were also fed up with what they perceived as the compromises of the PLO the point of no return was the adoption of the 10-point programme of the PLO in 1974 when it opened up to the possibility of using other means to liberate the occupied Palestinian territories opened up for the possibility of negotiating with the State of Israel and opened up for the possibility for an only partial liberation of historical Palestinian land This was in many respects the prelude to the Oslo Agreement in the 1990s the proto PIJ leaders ask the very Leninist question of “what is to be done?” Still violence was extremely controversial in Gaza at the time but they argued that the Islamic movement should not just participate That was not the view of the Muslim Brotherhood and this led to altercations and fistfights in the mosques between the proponents of the two views changed once Hamas emerged and started its violence and its relations with the PIJ become more cordial with the two organisations signing the Charter of Brotherhood and Cooperation in 1992 which formally ended the dispute between the two although competition between Hamas and PIJ has been there since Palestinian Islamic Jihad – that implies that this would be the more radical faction PIJ sounds far scarier than Islamic resistance movement (Hamas) former secular nationalist militants: members of Fatah the early members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) early members even of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) Although they were swayed by the religious wave in the region and particularly with the Iranian Revolution in 1979 they kept much of the secular analysis of the conflict What mattered to them was not creedal purity they didn't care about the correct political behaviour what mattered for PIJ was armed struggle against Israel not bother upholding community values (hisba) or engage in proselytization the way Hamas did PIJ did not care what clothes you are wearing whether unmarried couples held hands in the Gaza Strip That was quite different from Hamas which for example firebombed stores selling alcohol or protested against cinemas in Gaza PIJ is perceived as a moderate player by Palestinians And PIJ never had that kind of infighting with Hamas or Fatah as you saw in 2007 PIJ focus very much on factional unity against Israel and on regional creedal unity against Western colonialism It wants to keep Palestine outside of the sectarianism in the Middle East PIJ has never had the ambition of being a mass movement It has instead perceived its own role as being an armed vanguard in the struggle When I interviewed PIJ leader Anwar Abu Taha he noted that the difference between Hamas and PIJ is that Hamas is a political movement engaging in the military field while PIJ is a military movement engaging in the political field KR: So PIJ is apolitical whereas Hamas is not When you read the political theory of Hamas it is obvious that it envisions an Islamic and preserving perceived Islamic values from the top down has always been far more suspicious of the state which will always turn A weak state apparatus kept in check by a viable civic society would thus be the responsibility of the latter but once you have a free Palestinian state They were against electoral participation in 1996 under Oslo and were critical of Hamas for participating in those in 2006 in the 1990s we had one camp of resistance with PIJ and Hamas together and we had the forces of compromise to which the latter now also belongs.” Bear in mind but rather based on real political considerations and also the democratic deficiencies of the Palestinian National Authority PIJ released a document of principles and yes it says  that only jihad can liberate Palestine but it is also based on an understanding of international law and rights and precedents made by other resistance movements KR: So in this sense PIJ are anti-colonial they see themselves as resisting colonialism They explicitly call Israel a colonial settler entity Israel is only the extended arm of Western colonial interests in order to preserve Western economic is an oxymoron for the movement as it equals the continued subjugation and dependency not just to the Palestinians Israel thus has to be abolished in order to obtain true independence for the entire global south they do not envision the creation of a Caliphate and operate with a clear territorial definition of Palestine as PIJ is a Palestinian nationalist movement in the sense that it completely refuses any negotiations with the state of Israel It is only armed struggle that can liberate not just the occupied Palestinian territories but the entire historical Palestine from the river to the sea the abolition of Israel will not just commence the Islamization of Palestine PIJ pretty much turned Hamas’ logic on its head Instead of Islamization for liberation as Hamas stresses PIJ does not interpret religion to decide strategy it takes a strategic choice and religion is only subsequently interpreted to legitimize that strategy the PIJ has been described as an Iranian proxy or a puppet ES: The first people who describe them that way was the Palestinian Muslim Brotherhood - “Shias in disguise,” “Iranian lap dogs,” etc. which tried to slander an annoying competitor in Gaza during the great dispute about armed struggle and the Palestinian Islamic movement’s role PIJ view the Iranian Revolution as a huge source of inspiration as it was one of the greatest examples of a people and they were the people dealing a blow to Western imperialism with one of the greatest allies of Israel -the US - in the Middle East KR: How was the link between PIJ and Iran made and how did this evolve ES: The leadership of PIJ was imprisoned from the mid-1980s and then were deported to Lebanon by the end of the 1980s It was in Lebanon that they had meetings with Iranian officials in the Iranian embassy in Beirut PIJ started receiving training in the camps of Hezbollah particularly with the deportation of 415 Palestinian Islamists mostly from Hamas to the Lebanese Marj al-Zuhur in 1992 PIJ’s relationship with Iran has always made it be portrayed as an Iranian proxy very careful and very cautious that Iran does not infringe its own autonomy When PIJ suffered financial turmoil in the mid-1990s the PIJ leadership even discussed borrowing $250,000 and $500,000 from Hamas out of fear that PIJ members would succumb to Iranian pressure due to the economic difficulties and because Iran threatened to intervene because of the lack of financial control in the movement there was a fallout between PIJ and Iran in 2015 because the latter demanded an end to the former’s neutrality in the Syrian civil war and that obviously put a strain on the relationship Iran is their main sponsor and PIJ has grown de facto dependent on Iranian aid given that it has been unable to diversify its sources of income which necessarily limits PIJ’s political maneuverability PIJ is also of limited use to Iran as it views the Palestinian-Israeli conflict as bound within the Palestinian territory It's not an international organisation which has an interest in targeting international targets who have targeted a Jewish community center in Argentina in 1994 or attacked a bus with Israeli tourists in Bulgaria in 2012 KR: PIJ has lived under Hamas rule in Gaza for the last 16 years What kind of an experience has this been for them there were more or less genuine attempts to merge the two organisations throughout the 1990s because PIJ viewed Hamas as a late-comer to the Intifada who was harvesting the fruits of PIJ’s military efforts since 1984 Hamas has always been arrogant in the way that it considered PIJ a splinter group that should be reunited with its mother organization So they have coexisted but competition has persisted a tape was leaked showing Hamas’ shura council member Fathi Hamad slandering PIJ calling them Shias and slamming PIJ for attempting to outmuscle Hamas Hamad even accused them of attempting to dress up Hamas terrorist attacks as their own to boost its own standing The tape was symptomatic of the annoyance in Hamas that PIJ was presented as equally important in the press during the Second Intifada although Hamas was the far bigger organization continued after 2007 when Hamas took over Gaza Hamas has had to walk a far more delicate line between maintaining its ethos (the ethos of being a resistance movement) where the majority of this legitimacy came from and now also having to be a responsible governing actor asked the other Palestinian armed factions already in 2007 not to send rockets into Israel because Hamas knew it would mean closed border crossings with no medicine This was definitely a win-win situation for PIJ While Hamas claimed it sought political power to protect the resistance many Palestinians began perceiving Hamas as a movement using the resistance to protect political power which was unencumbered by the inconvenient responsibility of governance could continue to emphasise the need for an armed struggle not just for ending the siege of Gaza but to liberate the whole of Palestine the Islamic Jihad could portray itself as the continued principal defenders of Palestinian rights PIJ was very happy to fill the void left by Hamas in the armed struggle from Gaza That schism led to clashes between the two which meant that Iran cut much of Hamas’s funding and redirected its funding to the PIJ you see PIJ grow bigger - it grows stronger it grows more professional with more advanced weaponry PIJ also saw a new wave of members from Hamas and Fatah because of the infighting in 2007 after another round of fighting with Israel Egypt negotiated a ceasefire without involving Hamas in the negotiations That was a huge source of annoyance for Hamas a complete sidelining of the supposed rulers of Gaza which led to more tensions PIJ had grown to such an extent that it could wage a solo war against Israel I think that the last 16 years have been incredibly kind to Islamic Jihad it has benefited vastly from the governance of Hamas as it has filled the void in the light of 7 October attacks on Israel ES: Many people now talk about the potential destruction of Hamas I would be more concerned about the future of the PIJ because we now are most likely seeing Hamas returning to its roots as an underground clandestine movement but also falling back on the social infrastructure it has effectively been constructing in Gaza since the 1970s it is now fully invested in fighting Israel and thus its new posture undermines that of the PIJ No longer is PIJ the only faction waging war on Israel Because PIJ has fewer strings to play on than Hamas – which has its political wing and its social services – we know that PIJ traditionally is caught in a state of asphyxiation in periods of heavy Israeli counterinsurgency During the 1990s when most of its militants were killed the activity of PIJ was almost non-existent Only the Second Intifada allowed for their resurgence a similar dynamic on the ground might be developing and Islamic Jihad could be hit far harder than Hamas by this war KR: What is the situation on the ground right now for PIJ ES: When we read the interviews with PIJ and its militants there's no smoking gun connecting PIJ to the planning of these attacks They joined the attacks shortly after the fighting erupted and according to PIJ Hamas informed them about the attack a couple of hours before it started they immediately joined and also sent rockets They have approximately 30 hostages in Gaza if reports are correct the politicians of the PIJ have given full support to Hamas This is not really a surprise when you consider that the PIJ is about the struggle the only thing that can liberate Palestine in their view so it wants the other factions to join the fighting it is now obvious that there is coordination but also Hezbollah in Iran about what’s going to happen There are reports of PIJ participating in the fighting against the ground against Israeli ground forces and they also inflicted casualties on the Israeli forces Leigh Waldman Tim Stewart It was a crime that shocked many; an aspiring rapper and veteran Martel Derouen killed with a single gunshot The person caught, literally holding the gun in hand was a woman named Sasha Skare after a couple of days of not answering phone calls and texts San Antonio police were dispatched to The Towers complex off La Cantera Parkway to do a welfare check on 34-year-old Martell Derouen they noticed a suspicious hole near the peephole After getting staff at the complex to help and right behind it lay Derouen’s body in a pool of blood police discovered several key pieces of evidence; a 911 call and a doorbell camera video More Stories Like This In Our Email Newsletter A video was also collected from one of Derouen’s neighbors walking down the hallway looking at her phone police put her photo out to the media and the search was on she was caught and booked at the Bexar County jail Days leading up to her trial more than two years later a 20-year plea deal was offered to Skare but she declined it A jury was picked and testimony was set to begin on August 29 The first person to take the stand was Derouen’s wife She talked about her relationship with Derouen and how they got married in 2007 and eventually moved to San Antonio as he wanted to pursue a music career and she wanted to settle down and have a family We weren’t being intimate or anything like that we were more so just friends,” Joia said “Originally we met after she wanted to pursue music Martell met her at a video shoot and then he said ‘Oh she’s interested in music you know I want to help her out’,” Joia said Joia later spoke about going to Derouen’s apartment when she couldn’t reach him and when she got there She called Derouen’s mom and she felt something bad had happened “I was just listening to his mom crying on the phone I didn’t want to believe it until somebody actually told me this is what happened,” Joia said Inside Derouen’s apartment was some broken glass Skare’s bag was sitting on the ground and her shoes were nearby An empty gun box was also found in the apartment it appeared to investigators some kind of struggle or scuffle had occurred Nearby neighbors testified hearing two people arguing inside and the neighbor who lived across the hall said she saw Skare banging on the door but never heard a gunshot Another neighbor thought he heard the gunshot but ended up thinking it was the fireworks that run every night at the nearby Six Flags Fiesta Texas theme park took the stand he said that it appeared the two were arguing and at some point Skare took Deruen’s gun and he threw her out The detective explained that because she had left all her stuff inside she started banging on the door and that when he peeped to look out And it caused the death of the defendant,” Detective Saiz said the defense had one witness to call up and that was Sasha Skare Skare was very soft-spoken and seemingly calm She talked about meeting Derouen when she was 17 and how they began collaborating in music together “We started becoming real close friends after about two years,” Skare said she said that their relationship evolved and turned sexual about six months before he was killed The questions then turned to the night the shooting took place Skare said Derouen picked her up and they went back to his place she said she had some drinks and both were smoking marijuana Skare said everything changed after she got a phone call from a photographer And I was in the kitchen talking,” Skare said I was scrolling on my phone and he came into the room and turned the lights on He just asked me to leave his apartment He asked me to leave and I just asked him why He was upset because he felt like I was on the phone with another man.” She explained the argument got more physical “I snatched my stuff from him and that’s pretty much when it started,” Skare said And what felt like a long time he was hitting me choking me until the point I couldn’t’ breathe.” She said she saw the gun and took it as a way to get out “After I grabbed I told him don’t touch me,” she said “I told him don’t touch me and I started backing up out of the bedroom I started grabbing dishes out of the cabinet and throwing it in between us.” “Where you in fear of Martell?” the lawyer asked Skare said she was able to get out of the apartment but all of her stuff stayed inside she said “I was banging on the door with the gun,” Skare said “Was he yelling screaming or making any kind of noise,” the lawyer asked “At some point was a shot fired,” the lawyer said “As I was knocking on the door I just threw the gun up and it shot.” “Did you have any idea he was standing behind that door,” the lawyer asked “What was your intent when that gun fired?” “My intent was just to get his attention,” Skare said through tears Sasha also admitted to making the 911 call and throwing the gun in a dumpster the state challenged her version of events especially when she said she had to jump over a counter to get away from Derouen the jury was able to deliberate and in just over two hours There was no reaction from Skare as her sentence was handed down Derouen’s family members were elated and satisfied with the sentence they would now get the chance to face Skare Derouen’s sister Kami gave a powerful impact statement “Sasha the pain and agony you brought upon my family in unbearable,” Kami Derouen said “You deserve this and its time for you to pay if you have any because you’ve made your bed and now its time to lay in it.” Skare has been transferred to a prison in Dayton She will become eligible for parole in 2048 More Texas Crime Stories: Some 300 workers are reportedly affected at According to Skare's arrest affidavit an officer was sent to Martell's apartment when the welfare check was called the officer noticed a bullet hole in Martell's front door Court documents show the officer tried to get a response but eventually had to ask management at the complex for help getting inside The officer entered the apartment and saw Martell lying on the floor with a gunshot wound He's self-taught with everything that he does to have this certificate means a lot to me." homicide detectives arrived at the complex and found evidence that a fight had taken place inside Martell's apartment Officers said there was evidence that suggested a gun was taken from the bedroom or closet and it was clear someone fired a gun outside the apartment and into the front door near the peephole while Martell stood on the other side Court documents also show investigators found surveillance video of a woman they believed was Skare walking around the apartment complex shortly after shots were fired A witness later described Skare as the person who was banging on Martell's door Investigators gathered more video of Skare walking the complex hallways near Martell's apartment with a cell phone in one hand and a gun in the other Officers did more research and found someone placed a call to 911 on Friday Police said the caller claimed to be Martell's wife but the phone number did not belong to Joia and officers believed the person on the other line had a different voice than Joia The caller said she was locked out of her apartment and worried her husband police later discovered this caller was Skare after she slipped up and gave her last known address on O'Connor Road instead of Martell's address or I don't know what was going through her head I'm not taking responsibility for this and when she tried to call the police she told them that this is his wife," Joia said Joia added she was disgusted after hearing Skare had done this "So not only do you commit this horrible crime but then you try to blame it on someone else because you're a coward and you know you that you were wrong," Joia said Skare is facing first-degree felony charges for murder "I'm going to make sure that for the crime with Martell "No matter if I have to be at every court date I want people to know what type of person she really is." said the deal would strengthen its “innovative power in northern Europe” Danish Crown has bought a factory site from Skare meat packers in an “unexpected opportunity” to expand its domestic footprint includes a 120,000sq metre site in Vejen in southern Denmark The ownership of the site will be transferred from director Kurt Skare on 1 April It comes as Skare reportedly filed for bankruptcy in February affecting 300 workers at the Vejen facility and another in Århus That followed an unannounced inspection of the Vejen processing facility in December Danish Crown group production director Søren F Eriksen said: “The buildings came up for sale and it opened some unexpected opportunities for us because we were faced with having to build a new building in Denmark and not only would it be more expensive for us it would also have a significantly longer time horizon so we quickly agreed with the previous owner.” Neither production equipment nor inventory are part of the acquisition as they do not match the group’s “future needs” It did not clarify what the site will be used for when asked by Just Food “We are not ready to talk about what type of production we will have in the buildings yet,” Eriksen said “It may take up to a year before we are ready to start production in Vejen so it is also too early to say anything about how many employees we will need.” “We have a clear goal of being able to offer our customers in Northern Europe more new products and we have long had a strategy to make a stronger mark on “The purchase of the buildings also opens other opportunities for us so we will therefore spend the coming months making a detailed plan.” Meanwhile, in Germany, Danish Crown is closing a 200-employee facility citing declining numbers of slaughtered animals and decreasing consumption of pork The co-operative said it is “adjusting its approach” to the German market in order to improve earnings including the closure of a deboning facility in Boizenburg ROCHESTER — When it comes to musculoskeletal injuries sometimes the best treatment course involves getting back to the basics of movement "We're all born with these movement patterns and they have to to be able to move well," said Nate Skare reconnecting your brain to the muscles to recruit the muscles in the proper way." has some combination of chiropractic adjustments and then some soft tissue or myofascial release," Skare said "And there's a couple of techniques that I've had a lot of training and experience with that no one else in Rochester does." While Skare's practice has only been open since May he's no stranger to Southeast Minnesota and sports injury Skare was a three-sport high school athlete and played football at Upper Iowa University He sustained some "unique and weird sports injuries" during high school "A chiropractor kind of figured out what was going on .. In addition to dynamic neuromuscular stabilization and chiropractic adjustments Skare's treatment credentials also include dry needling a therapy adjacent to acupuncture that targets muscle trigger points While this integrative approach to chiropractic care and physical therapy is becoming more common among providers Skare said the hardest part of starting his own practice is getting past the assumption that he only provides adjustments "It allows you to have more tools in your toolbox to help people get better," Skare said of multidisciplinary treatment "Because not everyone needs an adjustment." Today, Iran provides support to a number of Palestinian groups, including Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) most notably Yet these groups are not puppets and their relationship with Tehran is constantly evolving The Hamas-led attacks against Israel on 7 October reflected their own independent calculations Although they could not have happened without the provision of long-term Iranian support the attacks likely came as an unwelcome surprise for Tehran which over the last two months has avoided giving Palestinian groups full-throated support Whether Hamas and PIJ remain tightly aligned with Iran will depend on the outcome of the war in Gaza and wider dynamics in the Middle East’s fluctuating geopolitics Iran’s support for the Palestinian cause has always been in part ideological given Jerusalem’s religious significance for Muslims Iran’s 1979 constitution affirmed its duty to export the Iranian revolution to assist “the dispossessed” around the world But realpolitik interests have largely taken over since the late 1980s Iran gradually came to support Palestinian armed groups as an integral part of its regional security policy to contain and preoccupy Israel which it has long perceived as the greatest threat to its security and domestic stability a group’s Islamic credentials (or lack thereof) mattered less than its willingness to confront Israel The gradual moderation of PLO positions during the 1980s – opening back-channel negotiations with Israel, accepting territorial partition of historical Palestine, and renouncing armed violence – was one factor contributing to a rupture in relations. Iran has continued to provide some support to PLO members such as the Marxist-Leninist PFLP in order to maintain its regional security paradigm it shifted the bulk of its support towards Palestinian Islamist groups given the political and military irrelevance of the far smaller Marxist-Leninist groups in the occupied territories then we supply the money and arms to the occupied territories and support the families of our people.” It is unlikely that the 7 October attacks could have happened without Iran’s decades-long support Other Iranian-backed groups in Gaza have likely also benefited from these arrangements It is unlikely that the 7 October attacks could have happened without this decades-long support The relationship between Sunni Hamas and PIJ and Shia Iran has always been a marriage of convenience produced by shared interests on the ground rather than ideological affinity with Tehran’s political interpretation of Islam the groups are constantly adjusting their external relations according to their own strategic calculations This was most evident in the wake of the Arab uprisings which Iran sponsored in an attempt to replace Hamas and PIJ with a more pliant proxy and that to target Yemen was equal to targeting the Palestinian cause.” Personal ideological beliefs may also have bolstered the relationship between PIJ and Iran. The group’s leader since 2018, Ziyad al-Nakhala appears to be closer to Iran than his predecessor The renewal of relations may also have reflected the movement’s conclusions that there was no other alternative funding available to it PIJ and Iran appear to have drawn even closer together Over the past year Hamas too has sought to mend its ties with Iran. This was first signalled by the visit of Khalil al-Hayya This effectively ended nearly a decade of hostility between Hamas and the Syrian regime demonstrating its return to the Iranian fold and the failure of its previous realignment Hamas largely miscalculated when it bet on the Sunni axis which witnessed the ascendance of the Islamist Ennahda party in Tunisa and the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt But the political tide soon turned against political Islam following the ousting of Egypt’s Islamist president to reinforce Egypt’s blockade on Gaza from July 2013 onwards made this short-lived reorientation politically and financially untenable for Hamas Having received insufficient support from Arab capitals Hamas was forced to turn back towards Damascus and Tehran to preserve its interests and opening up for a two-state solution in its 2017 platform were all made possible by the weakening of hardliners following the end of the second intifada which eroded support within Hamas for armed violence the positioning of Hamas and PIJ is constantly in flux Their future orientation will depend in part on whether Arab and Western states can strengthen moderate voices in these groups who have long wanted to move away from Iran’s orbit by presenting a realistic political pathway towards Palestinian independence Dr Erik Skare is a historian and researcher at the University of Oslo and an associate researcher at Sciences Po in Paris He specialises on Palestinian history with a particular focus on religion and secular politics [1] Jørgen Jensehaugen “A Palestinian Window of Opportunity the US and the Iranian Hostage Crisis,” British Journal of Middle Eastern Studies 48:4 (2021) [2] Erik Skare A History of Palestinian Islamic Jihad: Faith and Revolution in the Middle East (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press [3] Muhammad Muslih “The Foreign Policy of Hamas,” Council on Foreign Relations (1999) [4] Skare [5] Leila Seurat [6] Khaled Hroub Hamas: Political Thought and Ideology (Washington Be the first to know about our latest publications I consent to receiving the selected ECFR newsletters and to the analysis of open & click rates.
