two prospects for the organization should be getting even more coverage than they already are
As fans have meltdowns about the Detroit Red Wings and their playoff lives
Skellefteå AIK of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) helped in the development of many young hockey players. Before this team played home to our current prospects, Jonatan Berggren was one of many graduates of Skellefteå. Situated close to the Arctic Circle and home to one of the tallest timber buildings in the world
Skellefteå seems to offer a different pace than other cities in Sweden
Skellefteå has a powerhouse of a hockey club and organization as a whole
It’s likely why the Wings organization felt comfortable having two of its prized prospects in Skellefteå
The team not only knows how to win championships
but also develops prospects as well as any professional ice hockey team
Axel Sandin Pellikka and Michael Brandsegg-Nygård are great thirst quenchers for any fans looking for playoff hockey without the need to possibly rip out hair on your head or waive the white flag and demand a general manager change at the end of the first period
Sandin Pellikka played on the second pairing wearing the classic jersey No. 5. The right-handed shooting defenseman has played in six games (so far), scored once, and earned three assists for four points (even earning a hat trick)
He took one penalty and was even throughout these games
For anyone unfamiliar or who hasn’t checked in with Sandin Pellikka lately
the young man is an offensive dynamo without being a blackhole defensively
He oozes the “it” factor that Wings fans have been demanding to see in the Winged Wheel
interestingly enough my favorite clip of Sandin Pellikka comes from a clip off the ice
During this year’s International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Men’s World Junior Championships, Sandin Pellikka performed exceedingly well. So well, in fact, he was close to breaking records. When asked about being the top scorer and if it means anything to Sandin Pellikka, the young man was quick with an answer
I’m here to win championships with the team
His words echo his fellow Red Wings prospects
especially guys like Moritz Seider and Lucas Raymond who seem unconcerned with personal accolades
Sandin Pellikka is dedicated to his team and the ultimate goal of winning championships
which is a mature thought from such a young player
Meanwhile, Brandsegg-Nygård has played in six games
He had three points to show for his efforts (two goals
one assist) and a whopping 10 penalty minutes
The huge forward is already built for the National Hockey League (NHL)
After gaining a bit more confidence in the SHL and possibly the American Hockey League (AHL)
Brandsegg-Nygård is destined to become a fan favorite
Top off his physical play with a wicked shot and Brandsegg-Nygård is another missing piece for the Wings
For any fan in dire need of playoff hockey
who might be so lost and gone with the Red Wings and their playoff droughts
Instead of turning green with envy as you look at the Montréal and Ottawas of the world
look at our young prospects who are making waves in the playoffs already
Our beloved Wings are still moving towards the future
They don’t seem to be behind or ahead of schedule
It may not be sexy or what impatient fans want
but Sandin Pellikka and Brandsegg-Nygård provide some much-needed relief for that playoff itch we are in dire need of
non-drowsy relief for at least three hours.)

While many Detroit Red Wings fans grow antsy waiting for the next dynasty, some prospects are already heating up in the playoffs. Michael Brandsegg-Nygård and Axel Sandin Pellikka have helped Skellefteå AIK of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) secure a spot in the semi-finals.

Former Detroit defenseman touches off pre-game melee; Dishes out massive hit
Seven times in the club’s past 11 losses, Detroit has allowed three or more goals during a single period of play
two Red Wings prospects were putting that type of rampant scoring outburst on display in their favor
In Game 2 of their Swedish Hockey League quarter-final series
And all four goals were registered by the winners during the first 20 minutes of play
Defenseman Axel Sandin Pellikka was a linchpin in the Skelleftea attack

Sandin Pellikka was setting an SHL record for teenage defensemen by scoring 12 goals
He has points in four of his past five games
Among the scorers for Skelleftea was winger Michael Brandsegg Nygard
The Norwegian chosen 15th overall by the Red Wings in the 2024 NHL draft made it 2-0 barely seven minutes into the game
Brandsegg Nygard accounted for two hits during 13:16 of ice time
In the absence of injured Skelleftea captain Jonathan Pudas, former Red Wings defenseman Luke Witkowski is playing first-pairing minutes for Skelleftea
He skated a team-high 22:44 in Sunday’s win
it was what Witkowski did while on the ice for the pre-game warm-up that everyone was talking about after the game
The former Detroit tough guy touched off a pre-game scuffle after shooting pucks at Farjestad goalie Anders Lindback and other Farjestad players
Witkowski also got involved in a verbal exchange with Lindback

— TV4 Hockey (@TV4_Hockey) January 4, 2025
“I asked how his family was doing and how everything was going at home,” Witkowski told Swedish website Aftonbladet
Witkowski and other members of the Skelleftea club were insisting his actions were in retaliation to Farjestad shooting pucks at Skelleftea goalie Linus Soderstrom prior to Game 1 of the series
Farjestad were 6-2 winners in that contest
“That shouldn’t happen,” Witkowski said
“Then you have to do something about it.”
Skelleftea coach Pierre Johnsson commended the former Detroit player for his response
“What I know is that during the last game they shot pucks at our goalie when he was going out and of course we were prepared for it to happen again,” Johnsson said
“Then we stood up for each other and handled it calmly and nicely
They try to do their thing and we try to do our thing.”

who were full of confidence going into another match at Skellefteå Kraft Arena
But after just over seven minutes it was clear Brynas had put that blip behind them, going ahead when Charles-Edouard D'Astous finished off a flowing team move which began behind their own goal
The second arrived within the final six minutes of the opener - this time the possession was won behind the Skelleftea pipes, and Jack Kopacka was on hand to steer the puck home
As dominant as the visitors were in the first period
Skelleftea were even more so in the second
A shot on the turn from Par Lindholm deceived the visiting defence and halved the deficit in the fifth minute
another break between periods saw the momentum swing back once more
Just over a minute into the third, Kopacka's pass intended for Johan Larsson was deflected in off a Skelleftea stick to tie things up once more
but he would not leave without getting himself on the scoresheet
After near misses from both teams, Larsson settled the match with just over five minutes remaining, wrapping around from behind the net and squeezing the puck past Linus Soderstrom
The Gavle side will have three chances to complete the series win

Frolunda went down 4-2 to Timra on home ice in the opener, but responded with four goals of their own tonight to run out 4-0 winners
Two penalties in quick succession for Timra allowed the home side to score from a 5-on-3 after eight minutes through Dominik Egli
and 1-0 was how it stayed until the end of the second period
it took just 15 seconds of the third period for the second goal to arrive and settle the home crowd's nerves in Gothenburg
Timra took out the goaltender in search of a late route back into the game, but when Frolunda won possession back, Isac Born wrapped up the win in the final two minutes
There was still time for Egli to complete his hat-trick with another empty-netter in the final seconds, as Frolunda celebrated levelling the series and a 16-save shutout for Lars Johansson
SCA Arena in Timra will host the next two matches on Tuesday and Thursday
Four goals was more than enough for Skelleftea, too, as they beat Farjestad 4-1 away
just two nights after a 6-2 loss on the same rink
All four goals for the away side arrived in the first 16:23 of the first period
beginning with Andreas Johnsson's deadlock-breaker after three minutes
Michael Brandsegg-Nygard doubled the advantage at 07:34, before Anton Heikkinen added number three less than 60 seconds of play later
with none of the goals scored on a powerplay
When Farjestad did have Henrik Bjorklund penalised for tripping, it only took Oscar Lindberg 11 seconds to make the man advantage count
Marian Studenic pulled one back midway through the third
Games three and four will be played in Skelleftea
After just 13 wins in 52 regular season matches and two Playout games, HV 71 have now won three in a row to lead Modo 3-2 in the series to stay in the SHL
They completed the turnaround with a 4-0 win after a dominant first period display
to secure the first away victory for either side in the series
Modo suffered a serious setback when Mans Carlsson received a game misconduct penalty for cross-checking in the sixth minute
Andre Petersson and Jamiro Reber took advantage on the following powerplay, before Oscar Fisker Molgaard shocked the home side further with the third goal in the 11th minute
The second period was scoreless, before the win was sealed with five minutes to play when William Nilsson found the empty net
Frederik Dichow made 19 saves for HV 71 in his shutout
The Jonkoping side are now one win away from SHL survival
which they can secure back at Husqvarna Garden on Tuesday
The battery company Northvolt has been experiencing production problems and financial losses recently
Most of the company's employees work at its factory in Skellefteå in northern Sweden

the shareholders of Northvolt decided to allow the company to continue its operations for up to eight months

On Wednesday this week, the shareholders of the battery company Northvolt voted for the company to continue its operations. That is reported by Radio Sweden.
The Swedish battery company faces significant financial difficulties and has filed for Chapter 11 reorganization in the US to access new funding.
Radio Sweden reports that the company will now have eight months to improve the economic situation to avoid liquidation in the next general meeting
"This entails that the operations in both Skellefteå and Västerås can continue," says Anders Oscarsson

The big Norwegian winger that Detroit was selecting 15th overall in the 2024 NHL entry draft scored twice
Brandsegg-Nygard now has four goals in nine playoff games
During 42 regular-season games for Skelleftea this season
the 19-year-old forwardOscar Lindberg was good for five goals
Clearly, as the games have gotten bigger, the 6-foot-1, 198-pound Brandsegg-Nygard is raising his level of play
He began the playoffs on Skelleftea’s fourth line
That’s where he was skating for the majority of the regular season
Brandsegg-Nygard was skating on the right wing of Skelleftea’s top line alongside Rickard Hugg and Oscar Lindberg
Brandsegg-Nygard’s first goal of the game was a power-play tally
He’s tied for third among goal scorers in the SHL playoffs. Leading the way with eight goals is former Grand Rapids Griffins forward Pontus Andreasson of Lulea

The first Norwegian player ever chosen in the first round of an NHL entry draft
the Red Wings sought for Brandsegg-Nygard to stay in North America and play with the AHL Griffins this season

A 4-0 win in game five was perhaps the most decisive
as it was the only one of the six to be won by the away side on the night
But the job was completed back at Husqvarna Garden, beginning with Oskar Stal-Lyrenas' opening goal inside the first five minutes
One became two early in period two courtesy of Oscar Fisker Molgaard, before the fans in Jonkoping could all but taste victory at 04:41 in the second when Jonathan Ang made it 3-0 on a powerplay
Those fans were in for a nervy third period, though, as Sampo Ranta got Modo on the board, before Samuel Vigneault made it 3-2 in the final minute
But that was too little too late for the side from Ornskoldsvik
whose two-season stay in the SHL comes to an end
In the Playoffs, Frolunda have taken a 2-1 lead over Timra but they needed a full 38 minutes and five seconds of overtime to do so in game three
Timra failed to take advantage of three powerplays in a scoreless first period, before eventually breaking through when the teams were even, three minutes into the second, through Erik Walterholm
The Gothenburg side were struggling to keep their discipline
but that did not stop Max Friburg equalising five minutes later
But Friburg was soon at fault for a delay of game, giving Emil Pettersson the chance to put Timra ahead again on a powerplay, before they went 3-1 up thanks to Magnus Paajarvi while shorthanded before the period was up
Frolunda dug deep and got themselves back into the match late on courtesy of Arttu Ruotsalainen
and then with just six seconds remaining to force overtime
20 minutes was not enough to find a winner, and it looked as if 40 wouldn't be either, until 38:05 in overtime, when Isac Born scored his second of the series to win the match 4-3
Timra will be looking to bounce back on Thursday
After a 6-2 loss in the first match before hitting back with a 4-1 win two nights ago, Skelleftea have gone ahead in their series with Farjestad for the first time by taking game three 4-2 at home
It was the visitors, however, who raced into an early lead through Michael Lindqvist
But the game turned five minutes into the second period - down a man after Andreas Johnsson was penalised for charging, Skelleftea scored a shorthanded goal when Martins Dzierkals set up Par Lindholm
Eight minutes later, the home side were in front when Jonathan Davidsson grabbed his first goal of the series
Skelleftea roles were reversed when Lindholm picked up an assist for Dzierkals to score and give the hosts some breathing space
Yet that lasted only five minutes when Linus Johansson struck for Farjestad to reduce the deficit, but their empty net gamble did not pay off - Rickard Hugg sealed the 4-2 win with an empty-netter
The Skellefteå Kraft Arena will also host game four on Thursday

there were 247 listings with the city’s major housing companies – many of them from Skebo. Here’s where the apartments are located. Here are the four locations where Skebo has the most empty apartments
Skellefteå's housing market faced a crisis due to a shortage of apartments
we reported intense competition: up to 300 people applied when Skebo listed an older apartment
demand dropped sharply after Northvolt halted its factory expansion and began laying off staff
247 apartments are available for rent across Skellefteå municipality
with 90 listings – almost all in newly built developments
Some apartments are empty and ready for immediate move-in
The largest number of move-outs is at Getberget
a development completed last summer that quickly filled up
There are currently 32 available apartments in the three green buildings
Skebo’s next largest area for vacancies is Bureå
where a new development was built next to the health centre
Seventeen apartments are now available there
The newly built area near the school in Kåge has also seen tenants moving out
Skebo also has new developments in Byske and Burträsk
Seven apartments are available in Byske and five in Burträsk
Here are the four locations where Skebo has the most empty apartments
bottom right: Byske (7 apartments).Foto: Yvonne RönngrenSkebo’s newly built developments in the city centre are doing better
there are only three vacancies despite it being a large building with many apartments
and the major complex on the Frigg and Balder plots currently has no vacancies at all
says the impact of the developments at Northvolt is clear
– After the first round of lay-offs last autumn
and the decision on how many would stay on – each time
When many apartments are suddenly released onto the market
but that’s not something Skebo tracks in its statistics
is that the apartments most at risk of remaining vacant long term are in new developments
Kåge (9 apartments).Foto: Yvonne Rönngren/Sveafastigheter– Demand has been mediocre
and so far about half of the apartments have been booked
and Catarina notes that the relatively low rents may have helped
– We received government investment support for these apartments
which means the rent is lower than it would have been otherwise
A one-bedroom apartment of 40 square metres costs
6,600 kronor per month – without the support
the rent would have been over 8,000 kronor
The two brown newly built houses in central Moröhöjden have done better – there are four vacant apartments there
Sveafastigheter also owns a group of slightly older buildings on Byalagsgatan in northern Kåge

what can a housing company do to prevent vacancies
The question is answered by Anna Ersson at Skebo:
– Not much can be done about the rent levels
as there are regulations that must be followed
The rent for new builds has to cover construction costs and provide a market return
Now that we raised the rent in the older stock by 5 percent
which means tenants can retain their queue time when they take an apartment
The number of vacant apartments in Skellefteå is reaching new record levels

The giga factory Northvolt Ett in January 2024
about 3000 people work at the factory in Skellefteå in Northern Sweden
300 of these could lose their jobs after Northvolt's announced downsizing
Battery producer Northvolt has had to implement drastic measures due to its financial situation
layoffs and the closure of parts of the factory in Northern Sweden
Les på norsk.
The battery company Northvolt has announced redundancies and will close part of the factory in Skellefteå in northern Sweden
This is revealed in a press release from the company this week
Northvolt refers to the new strategic review that has been carried out due to the company's difficult financial situation
the company is implementing drastic measures to deal with its financial problems and to stake out the way forward.
The background for the review concerns, among other things, production disruptions, production that has not gone as planned, and billions in losses, reports national radio broadcaster Sveriges Radio.
we are having to take some tough actions for the purpose of securing the foundations of Northvolt’s operations to improve our financial stability and strengthen our operational performance," comments Peter Carlsson
"While conditions at this time are challenging
there remains no question that the global transition towards electrification — and the long-term outlook for cell manufacturers
including Northvolt — is strong," says CEO Peter Carlsson of Northvolt
Northvolt Ett is the company's giga factory for the production of lithium-ion batteries in the Northern Swedish town of Skellefteå
and one of the measures the company will now implement is to close down parts of the factory until further notice
The operations at the part in question include cathode active material production for batteries
About 300 people are employed at the impacted part of the factory
"The cost-saving mechanisms necessary for Northvolt to meet its core objective of focussing on large-scale cell manufacturing will regrettably include some difficult decisions on the size of our workforce to match the needs of a reduced scale of operations," reads the press release
Northvolt does not reveal how many will be affected by the closing
the company writes that no final decisions have been made on the precise nature of the downsizing
"We remain in constructive discussions with the unions and will ensure that every effort is made to minimize the need for redundancies."
In connection with the news from Northvolt
questions have been asked about whether the Swedish state will step in to help Northvolt
Speaking to the Swedish news agency TT (reproduced by Dagens industri)
Sweden's Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson (M) says that this is not relevant at the present time
The Swedish state has not lent anything to the battery manufacturer
she says there are many state-issued loan guarantees via the Swedish National Debt Office
the money the public has contributed via various authorities is about SEK 600 million via Industriklivet and others
"There has been a lot of speculation in recent weeks about the state's interference and how much of the taxpayers' money is at stake. That there is [talk about, ed.note.] many billions at stake. But this is not the case," says Svantesson in an interview with TT, reproduced by, among others, Dagens industri.
According to economic reporter Victor Jensen in Sveriges Radio
it was expected that Northvolt would do something due to the financial problems and the restructuring that is now taking place
"You simply look more closely at what to go for and where you want to put the money
it has been said that the focus going forward will be on large-scale production of batteries for vehicles
there have also been some other side businesses
It was expected that a change would be made as the company has financial problems."
the company has operations in several other places in Sweden
A number of companies including Bosch and Mercedes Benz have reportedly paid visits to Northvolt's battery factory in Skellefteå
but a private jet belonging to Bosch subsidiary Scintilla is said to have parked at a nearby airport on Friday
Swedish news outlet Norran quoted an anonymous Northvolt employee who said the company’s management stated a “very interesting player” had made a confidential visit to the battery factory on Friday last week
Norran reports that the private jet was parked at Skellefteå airport on Friday from 9:17 a.m
and sources claim that representatives of Mercedes-Benz visited the factory on the same day
Both companies have headquarters in Stuttgart
Northvolt has not confirmed any of the rumours
with Northvolt’s head of communications stating: “Generally
it’s not something we discuss publicly.”
Bosch’s Nordic head of communications
also told Norran: “We request your understanding that
we generally do not disclose specifics regarding past
present or future flights.” A Mercedes-Benz Group spokesperson added: “The speculation that we are interested in buying Northvolt is without merit.”
Bosch itself ruled out getting involved in battery production in 2018
the supplier wants to manufacture parts of the system technology for battery factories
the market has developed significantly since then and other managers are now in charge of the Bosch Board of Management
Mercedes-Benz also owns a stake in battery firm Automotive Cells Company (ACC), a competitor of Northvolt. In February, Mercedes-Benz launched the new Mercedes CLA with a high-end lithium battery that Norran reports is “the precise type Northvolt manufactures.” While Northvolt produces prismatic cells and the Mercedes CLA uses prismatic cells
Northvolt is not the only brand doing this – so this claim remains tenuous
Northvolt, which filed for bankruptcy in Sweden on March 12, announced earlier this April that it is continuing operations at its factory
Administrator Mikael Kubu said: “Despite major staff cutbacks
it is positive that operations can continue to some extent
which is likely crucial for selling the business
In November 2024, the company filed for bankruptcy protection under US insolvency law and CEO Peter Carlsson resigned
the Swedish factory fell short of production targets
leading to a drop in planned sales as well as the cancellation of a billion-euro order by shareholder BMW in the summer of 2024
The company also struggled to attract further finance from investors
forcing the company to sell off some of its subsidiaries including its module production unit to customer Scania
Northvolt continues to operate in Germany with construction beginning on a federally subsidised Northvolt Drei battery factory in March. Its German division is still not part of any bankruptcy proceedings
although there is a risk that it could be affected by the ongoing insolvency

I’m ready for the challenge In Skellefteå's competitive job market ex-Northvolter Ben Hebbourn discovers the frustrating paradox of Swedish workplaces: everyone demands language fluency on paper

and one promising interview exposes the absurd gap between recruitment theory and workplace reality.Ben Hebbourn
This week is a fresh start in every sense of the word
The weekend was a welcome two-day break from constantly thinking about Northvolt and shifting my mindset to not care about the factory
I still care deeply about the people working there
It's just that because I'm no longer on the journey
I wake up at 06:30 to get the kids off to school and then have a bike ride
Then it is time to open the laptop and get busy looking for that new opportunity
the search stretches from Sundsvall to Luleå
Taking a job away from Skellefteå is not the ideal option
We are settled in Skellefteå and I don't want to uproot what we have built here
I have been learning and for the most part can read
write and speak Swedish but not to a high standard
I have not taken any formal training and my learning has been purely self-driven
I also switched all my social media posts to Swedish
I hope that this can show anyone who looks at my various profiles that I can speak some Swedish
In the roles I had before Northvolt we spoke Swedish
but it was not seen as a barrier to switch to English.
"My first response to a job application via a job agency is an immediate rejection stating that I must have Swedish even though they haven't even spoken to me."Foto: Donna RichmondI feel that in one way the demand for Swedish is not really as important as perceived
The issue is getting over that wall and convincing people it can work
As an example my first response to a job application via a job agency is an immediate rejection stating that I must have Swedish even though they haven't even spoken to me
Through an old colleague I have got an interview
Earlier in the week I had a message from them giving me a heads-up that a position was becoming available
I did so in Swedish and got the reply in English
A perfect example of my previous observations
I am able to take the majority of it in Swedish and if I get the job I can start straight away
more people in recruitment taking a chance
and not making assumptions from what is on paper
And here lies the final thought for the week
The job hunt so far has emphasised that many employers focus more on my ability to perform it in Swedish than anything else
This means that I should adjust my sights a little
get the Swedish to a higher level and build up again
I have no doubts in my abilities to make that work
The issue here is recruiters see the CV and think I am not suitable for the job or am over qualified etc.

Pinguins Bremerhaven welcomed Skellefteå AIK to the Eisarena Bremerhaven to open their Playoffs campaign of the 2024/25 Champions Hockey League Season
Both teams impressed in the Regular Season
leaving Skellefteå with deep wounds and in need of a strong comeback next week
By the end of the second period, the score remained unchanged, with Bremerhaven forced into a defensive stance and successfully keeping Skellefteå off the scoreboard. Much of the credit went to Bremerhaven’s netminder, Maximilian Franzreb
who held strong and maintained the shutout
In the third period, Bremerhaven added one more goal. Nino Kinder found himself on a shorthanded breakaway and sent the puck into the net, extending the lead to 5-0. Skellefteå continued to press and even earned a penalty shot, but Franzreb blocked it once again
Bremerhaven celebrated a dominant 5-0 victory
putting them in an excellent position for the Return Game of their Round of 16 match-up next week

Farjestad conceded three penalties in the first period, and each time the home side took advantage with powerplay goals courtesy of Michael Brandsegg-Nygard, Par Lindholm and Max Lindholm
The second period was a better one for the visitors, although it took them until the final minute to break through, as Axel Bergkvist made it 3-1
But the Black & Yellows did not let it get to them
and they needed less than three minutes to restore the three-goal cushion through Oskar Vuollet
Though Joackim Nygard made it 4-2, once again ill-discipline cost the Karlstad club - Viktor Lodin received a game misconduct penalty for cross-checking, allowing Vuollet and Anton Heikkinen to capitalise
Skelleftea have the chance to seal their Quarter-Final place on Saturday at Löfbergs Arena in game five
The series between Timra and Frolunda is guaranteed to go to at least game six after the former secured a crucial 2-1 victory on home ice to level matters at two wins apiece
An overtime loss at the SCA Arena in game three meant Timra had to win or give the Gothenburg club the chance to wrap up the series at the Scandinavium in game five
The first period was scoreless and powerplay-free
but the match came to life six minutes into the second period when the home side were awarded a penalty shot
Magnus Paajarvi held his nerve to beat Tobias Normann and break the deadlock
Timra seemed to be edging to the tightest of victories, until midway through the final period - Paajarvi was the guilty man this time, penalised for holding, and Arttu Ruotsalainen found an equaliser for Frolunda on the powerplay
Another overtime period between these two looked to be on the cards until three minutes left when it was Timra's turn to have the man advantage - and take advantage - Emil Pettersson fired home what could be a pivotal goal in their season
Game five in Gothenburg is also set for Saturday
Hundreds of documents from within the company, as well as from the Work Environment Authorities and the Police highlight several safety risks and accidents in Northvolt’s facilities, an investigation by Dagens Nyheter reveals
The Swedish battery giant’s ambition is to be the world’s greenest battery manufacturer and it operates a large-scale battery production factory
with over 3500 employees in Northern Swedish town Skellefteå
the Skellefteå factory is simultaneously under construction to reach its full capacity
The investigation shows that several safety hazards have occurred and that employees have voiced concerns about their safety
26 employees have been severely injured at the facilities of the company that specialises in manufacturing lithium-ion batteries
primarily for electric vehicles (EVs) and energy storage solutions
getting chemicals in the eyes or on the body
and employees inhaling dangerous gas or smoke
Sources from within the company describe to DN different types of safety hazards
parts of the production temporarily being shut down to prevent injuries
and inadequate risk assessments being done
One of the reported deaths occurred in November 2023 because a 25-year-old employee was not wearing fire resistant clothing while conducting maintenance on a machine that exploded
The employee later died at the hospital as a result of burn injuries
Northvolt’s internal risk assessment indicated no risk of explosion
although employees had previously requested appropriate protective clothing due to concerns about potential fires
The Swedish Work Environment Authority investigated the fatal accident and decided to report Northvolt for prosecution
the work authority has repeatedly identified serious deficiencies in the work environment
three people have also been found dead in their homes after shifts at Northvolt
the police began investigating possible connections behind the still unexplained deaths
The battery giant states that they do not believe they stand out in terms of the number of accidents compared to other construction and industrial workplaces
They also say that they invest heavily in systematic work environment efforts
The company acknowledges their desire for rapid growth but asserts that it never occurs at the expense of employee safety
Northvolt was founded in 2016 by two former Tesla executives
The company focuses on the entire battery production process
from raw material sourcing to battery cell manufacturing and recycling
In its ambitious pursuit to accelerate the transition to a net-zero economy
the company has attracted substantial investments from governments
and is heavily investing in rapid growth of the business
New facilities are also being planned in Sweden and abroad

As much as the Red Wings would like to see Sandin Pellikka and Brandsegg-Nygard coming to North America
there is significant benefit for the young players to compete for a championship
It seems likely Sandin Pellikka, a potentially high-scoring puck mover, will be given an opportunity to make the Red Wings next season. Even if he doesn’t start with the Red Wings, he could be playing regularly in Detroit after some time in Grand Rapids. The hope is be that he could do for Detroit what Quinn Hughes does for Vancouver

The resignation was reported by multiple independent sources to Dagens Nyheter (DN) and later confirmed by Northvolt's communications director
Taking over as interim head of Northvolt Ett is Angéline Bilodeau
a senior executive currently based at Northvolt’s North American division in Canada
Bilodeau will assume the role immediately and continue until a permanent CEO is appointed by the year’s end
“The position will be held until the end of the year
when Northvolt will appoint a permanent CEO for Northvolt Ett,” Kataja told DN in a text message
Northvolt Ett Expansion AB – which manages the expansion project – had filed for bankruptcy with the Stockholm District Court
This followed the earlier suspension of the Northvolt Ett Expansion project
which has been touted as a key part of Northvolt's strategy to boost production capacity at the plant in Skellefteå
Northvolt clarified that the subsidiary had no direct employees and was mainly responsible for overseeing construction efforts
The filing was driven by the financial difficulties facing Ett Expansion AB
The expansion project had been put on hold on September 23, when Northvolt Group shifted its operational focus in Sweden. This change led to the layoffs of approximately 1,600 workers in Sweden
All work on the project has been halted since then
and future dealings with the subsidiary will now be managed by a bankruptcy trustee
Northvolt stressed that the bankruptcy only impacts Northvolt Ett Expansion AB

Skellefteå AIK faced the Pinguins Bremerhaven in Sweden for the Return Game of the Champions Hockey League Round of 16
After a tough First Game in which the Swedes went 5-0 down
Skellefteå’s hopes of advancing to the next round were hanging by a thread
This match was their final shot at redemption
continued their dominant form and cruised into the Quarter-Finals with ease and confidence
Jan Urbas finished off the period with a well-aimed shot from the blue line at 18:53
As the buzzer signalled the end of the opening twenty minutes
Bremerhaven held a strong 9-0 aggregate lead
leaving little doubt about the outcome of the two-game series
Skellefteå were the more active team in the second period
applying strong pressure and creating numerous scoring chances
and the home team still remained scoreless in the Playoffs by the end of the period
The third period saw two final goals to finish off the series. Urbas added another tally for Bremerhaven, while Oscar Lindberg finally got Skellefteå on the scoreboard with a powerplay goal
as the Swedes ended their journey with a crushing 10-1 aggregate defeat and bow out of the 2024/25 Champions Hockey League season in the very first Playoffs round - just one season on from a spectacular run all the way to the CHL Final

1,600 people are losing their jobs at Northvolt in Sweden
Earlier this month, the battery producer informed of an imminent downsizing and the closing of parts of its factory in Skellefteå
produces lithium-ion batteries in the northern Swedish city
According to Swedish SVT, the development of the project Northvolt Ett will come to a halt
It was first expected that about 300 people would lose their jobs in Skellefteå
The number has now been increased to 1000 employees at this factory
a much larger reduction in personnel than the 300 there was talk of just a few weeks ago," comments SVT's financial reporter Kristina Lagerström
and Northvolt is now trying to dramatically cut costs and focus on making the production work," Lagerström adds
As HNN reported, the battery producer is undergoing an extensive restructuring due to its difficult financial situation
The company has stated that drastic measures will be necessary to manage the financial issues and pave the way for further investment
The background for the restructuring includes production disturbances, production that has not gone as planned, and billion losses, according to Radio Sweden.
will also lose their jobs at Northvolt in Västerås and Stockholm
High North News will follow up on the matter
the company responsible only for expanding the Northvolt Ett battery cell factory in Skellefteå
All work on the expansion project has already been suspended
Just last month, in September 2024, Northvolt decided to cancel the expansion of its Northvolt Ett battery cell factory in Skellefteå
the subsidiary managing the expansion has filed an insolvency claim
Northvolt released a statement underlining that the insolvency application filed with the Stockholm District Court relates only to the subsidiary Northvolt Ett Expansion AB
The Swedish battery maker explained further that the insolvent company is just one of over 20 different entities within the Northvolt Group
will enable the Group to concentrate its resources towards “accelerating production in large-scale cell manufacturing within the fully-built
first phase of Northvolt Ett and delivering on commitments to its automotive customers.”
When revealing that the plans for expanding the Swedish battery cell manufacturing plant were cancelled
Northvolt Group also said it would be reducing its workforce by around 1,600 at three locations

Move comes after weeks of uncertainty over reports of financial problems as green vehicle sector struggles
The Swedish batterymaker Northvolt is to cut 1,600 jobs
in response to “headwinds” blowing through the electric car industry
The battery company announced redundancies across three of its sites on Monday
where it is suspending the expansion of Northvolt Ett
Europe’s first homegrown battery gigafactory
The company, which has been seen as Europe’s most promising contender to China’s battery producers, will also cut 400 jobs in Västerås, in central Sweden, where Northvolt Labs is based, and 200 in Stockholm, home to its head office.
the company’s chief executive and co-founder
insisted that “overall momentum for electrification remains strong” but that “tough” decisions were needed to ensure the company’s future
Northvolt’s employees have endured weeks of uncertainty over the company’s future amid reports of urgent financial problems and a halt on expenses
and the company is also looking for new investment
Europe’s electric vehicle sector has been struggling as consumer demand for greener vehicles struggles to increase quickly enough. Last week, industry figures showed the number of cars sold in the EU fell to 643,000 in August
“While overall momentum for electrification remains strong
we need to make sure that we take the right actions at the right time in response to headwinds in the automotive market
We now need to focus all energy and investments into our core business,” Carlsson said
“Success in the ramp-up of production at Northvolt Ett is critical for delivering to our customers and enabling sustainable business operations
Recent production records at Northvolt Ett show that we are on the right path
which counts Volkswagen and BMW among its customers
said it would focus on scaling up operations in Skellefteå to produce battery cells with a 16GWh production capacity
The Ett project was expected to provide an extra 30GWh of annual capacity
All redundancies are “subject to ongoing union negotiations”
The cuts are the latest in a wave of job losses sweeping the industry, including 14,000 announced by Elon Musk’s Tesla earlier this year and thousands linked to potential factory closures by Volkswagen in Germany
Separately, the Swedish broadcaster SVT reported on Monday that faulty pipes at Northvolt’s factory in Skellefteå
used in battery manufacturing because the facility was not built to withstand the cold
Northvolt told the broadcaster that the company makes detailed risk assessments
any leaks were not caused by the building’s design
and emissions were handled according to permits
A Northvolt spokesperson said: “The factory is built for the climate in Skellefteå
The part of the building that receives NMP is not directly related to building design so leaks should not be related to the design
“We have taken preventative and corrective measures to prevent and minimise any incidents
undertake detailed risk and task assessments that help develop informed work instructions which all operators are trained in.”

there's one guiding principle: If you build it
Whether it's a first-of-its-kind green flight academy
a new high-rise hotel made of wood in Skellefteå
or a treehouse hotel in Granö with a hidden purpose
there's a sense that sustainability for sustainability's sake is sometimes the best plan
But maybe also because sustainability in Swedish Lapland is within reach
"We have all these natural resources here — electricity from the hydroelectric plants
which is perhaps the world's greenest airport
a theoretical knowledge instructor at Green Flight Academy in Skellefteå
the facility became one of the first zero-emission airports in the world
Lindgren and his team did it by turning to fossil-free heating
They also added the charging infrastructure for electric flights
It didn't take long before the entire Västerbotten region began courting a reputation as a green destination, which culminated with the opening of Northvolt Ett
a lithium-ion battery gigafactory built on the site of an old paper mill
The facility is a highlight of an aerial tour of Skellefteå where you learn to fly at one of the only sustainable flight academies in the world
The Green Flight Academy came to northern Sweden in 2021 because it had the infrastructure (you know
which trains airline pilots for SAS and other regional carriers
has ambitious goals of conducting up to 30 percent of the flight training in all-electric aircraft
It's also using biofuels in the rest of its planes to cut back on emissions
"We're training pilots as sustainably as we can — and as sustainably as we are allowed to," says Cecilia Holmlund
Flying an electric plane is like taking a trip into the future
The single-engine aircraft is quieter and seems to respond quicker than a conventional plane
Holmlund says the academy is hoping to distinguish itself by training electric-certified pilots
The flight school also feels a special responsibility toward the environment
It's also pledged to buy electricity only from green sources for its operations
And it has an electric bus to shuttle students from the classrooms to the hangars
Sustainability in Northern Sweden sometimes seems to be done for its own sake
A few hours' drive south, you'll find another way Northern Sweden is becoming sustainable. Granö Beckasin is a hotel that takes its sustainability mission seriously
So seriously that its entire reason for existing is to create jobs in this small town and to prevent the local school from shutting down
Authorities wanted to close the local school and send the remaining students to Vindeln
Local residents thought that was a bad idea
so they formed a company to start a hotel and attract more residents to the area
"The whole point of living in the countryside here is not to live in the urban city," says Christopher Storm
"So the idea was that there are people that would like to stay in the countryside and live here — and how do we organize infrastructure for that."
The centerpiece of Granö Beckasin is its famous treehouses
There's also a refurbished 17th-century farmhouse turned into an art gallery and
a new restaurant under construction that's made from a recycled pavilion
Storm says creating a sustainable resort has been
The town's population is growing and the school is still there
The Wood Hotel's general manager David Åberg
the distinguishing feature is a high-rise building that is a first of its kind
which may be one of the most sustainable hotels in Sweden
It's built entirely of locally sourced spruce plywood that absorbs more carbon dioxide than it uses
Modern construction techniques now allow architects to design wood buildings without any height limits — and so they have
reduces the fire hazard that limited previous wood construction.)
But the new Wood Hotel
And that isn't the most remarkable thing about it
is an intelligent system that recycles hot air and ensures heating
cooling and ventilation are climate-neutral
"The system is a big part of our sustainability story," says the Wood Hotel's general manager
205-room property that is effectively pointing the way toward a more sustainable future
Robert Schmitz, the lead architect at White Arkitekter
says that was the intent from the beginning: to create a landmark in the city that would be both sustainable and inspire others to consider wood as a construction material for future projects
"The challenge was to reduce the amount of concrete in the structure and to basically create a climate-neutral building," he says
it looks like a domino effect — the green airport
But it's been more like a team effort
chief executive for the municipality of Skellefteå
City planners say everyone started to think seriously about sustainability years ago because it was the right thing to do
"We have a really clear vision that we're going to be a sustainable place in Skellefteå," says Kristina Sundin Jonsson
"Everyone in the industry and in the municipality and in the city sector
has joined together for this common goal."
this part of Swedish Lappland didn't set out to become a green destination
And now visitors can benefit from that decision
They can stay in treehouses and kayak along a river or go electric snowmobiling during the winter
they may be able to fly to this remote part of Scandinavia in an electric plane
powered by batteries created at Skellefteå's's gigafactory
they're not just pushing the limits of sustainability; they're redefining the rules
it's as if they've taken a page from a sci-fi novel and turned it into reality
