The artist Alfredo Jaar build an exhibition space out of paper and wood in Skoghall
when the dinosaur was accidentally electrocuted
was preparing to bring the life-size sculpture of the dinosaur
the steel and polyester artwork burned to the ground
“When I got the news the sculpture had burnt down
Luna Park was first created by the Welsh duo Heather and Ivan Morison
and had been a popular attraction in Portsmouth
Fernie was inspired to organise public events around its destruction
"I thought: 'there’s something in this'
It linked beautifully with the artists’ narrative about dystopian futures.”
that “something” has led to the Archive of Destruction
a website that catalogues Modern and contemporary public artworks that have been damaged
or obliterated over roughly the past century
including artworks destroyed or modified through protest or neglect
by institutional decree or by the artist’s own hand
“Embedded within the archive are two implicit challenges," she says
"The concept of destruction as an inherently negative act
and the idea of an artwork as a static thing,” she writes on the site
transformative and expansive potential of acts of destruction.”
The fifty public artworks on the site are separated into the eight things that were responsible for their destruction—including boredom
“It plays with the language of archives,” Fernie says
“the pompous system of categorisation that is the legacy of 19th century museology.”
Some of these artworks were built with annihilation in mind, like Alfredo Jaar’s Skoghall Konsthall
Jaar was commissioned to create a piece of public art in Skoghall
a small Swedish town built around a large paper mill
Shocked to discover that the town had no cultural spaces
Jaar built an exhibition hall from paper and wood
Locals were outraged at the loss of this promising art centre
fulfilling Jaar’s intention to draw attention to this absence
He was later invited to build a permanent exhibition space for the town
Mary Ellen Carroll’s ongoing project Prototype 180 (1999–) spans performance
debates and activism around land use and housing policy
all centred on a home the artist purchased in Houston
this time destroying the house with an excavator
egged on by a local resident who called it a “disgrace to the neighbourhood”
“The element of slapstick embedded within the building’s rotation and its demise could be seen to mirror the absurd situation in which a system of entrenched neoliberalism in Houston and beyond is celebrated and perpetuated,” Fernie writes
Some artists modify the work of others, like David Hammonds
who made two new works from Richard Serra’s minimalist monument TWU (1980)
a performance documented by photographer Dawoud Bey
he threw several pairs of shoes over the top of the art
Hammond’s modifications engaged Serra’s work with motifs of race
“It’s such a powerful example of how the meaning of artwork can change and become something representative of a particular moment in American history,” Fernie says
A troubling example of public intervention is Nicole Eisenman’s Sketch for a Fountain (2017)
a playful grouping of five androgynous figures assembled around a pool which constitutes the artist's contribution to Skulptur Projekt Münster in Germany
one of the figures was decapitated and a swastika spray-painted on the piece
This vandalism coincided with the election of a far-right party to Germany’s parliament for the first time since World War II
In a show of support for the artist and a rejection of rising reactionary tendencies
And then sometimes public admiration threatens an artwork. In the late 1990s, thousands of Oscar Wilde fans began leaving lipstick kisses on his Paris tomb, a 1912 sculpture of a nude, winged angel by Jacob Epstein
authorities instituted a €9,000 fine and erected a glass barrier around the statue
“I’d like to get to a point where we’re less fearful about what we try to commission in the public realm,” Fernie says. “Not to think about the launch date as the end of a project, but its starting point. The artwork is never finished.”
relocation or recontextualizing of site-specific works have underlined the limited protections for such art

This is a different kind of review to normal
but since it comes from personal experience
and since when I was looking for a review I couldn’t find one
They are basically tiles that look like (and are essentially made of) decking
which involves laying down slabs of wood on top of a support structure
these can just be laid down on any flat floor that you may have before
We had a rather ugly (and stained) concrete floor on our patio
and it definitely needed some cosmetic improvement
and interestingly we discovered decking tiles
A little bit of browsing and research pointed us towards Ikea’s range of Garden Decking tiles
The Skoghall Floor Decking ones were the cheapest ones that can be bought
and come in packs of 10 tiles of a square foot each
We measured up and found that our outside floor was 135 square feet (9 x 15 feet)
no Ikea in Oxford – the nearest ones are in London
and since they come neatly packaged in roughly square cube packages
it was easy to load them in my small hatchback
There isn’t a lot of preparation required
All that is needed is a floor that doesn’t have anything on it
advised that you clean your floor before you lay these tiles down
Only a good pair of scissors/snips/cutters/knife to open the pack up
Something like a wooden or a rubber mallet could be useful
There is no obvious way to ‘stick’ these to the floor
though you can use screws or similar ways if you prefer
The tiles have little clips that means they can be clipped together to tile together on the floor
Each tile has clips on two adjacent corners
and the housing for the clip on the other adjacent corners
it will be advisable to have the clips in the corner you start from
you have your tile with the female end of the clips on the floor already
I used thumbs to apply pressure on each clip
and each clips give you a satisfying click sound as it goes in
and despite that it probably took me 2-3 hours
It is essentially made of bits of wood attached with bits of plastic using screws
The plastic is quite easy to cut and break using pliers
though to cut the wood you will need a saw
and all I did was to break off some bit of wood off the tiles using pliers
The same method can be used to cover up any left over areas where a whole tile won’t fit
It actually started to rain about an hour after I laid it down
To begin with it seemed like they were collecting water
since it is pretty much polished acacia wood
More information on the Skoghall Floor Decking tiles can be found on the IKEA website:
http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/00231963/
More decking options available from IKEA can be found at the following link:

I am rather proud of how the patio looks now. It looks good, it feels good, and I feel positively ready to show off the garden and the patio floor this summer with my Bluetooth speakers
A good low cost option that is easy to put down
but structurally the tiles remain sound and solid
it is perfectly possible to treat it with some kind of oil (teak
etc.) to make sure it survives rain and sunshine
It still looks a lot better than it ever did before we had these
as you can just brush leaves and such like away
These are pretty much in a state of disrepair now
and a lot of the pieces are now coming off
you either need to take the whole tile off and unscrew them from the bottom
What I found easier was to take a pair of cutters/snips and just snap the plastic around them to remove them from the frame
We will be getting rid of these fairly soon now
Of course, there will always be some differences from the original after the problem is solved, but I will definitely try to remedy it. Maybe I can put some new decorations in other parts of the garden, such as neon signs of GSJJ
Making sure the neon signs match the colours of the garden and incorporating some unique elements will make the garden look brand new
I appreciate all the comments and questions everyone has posted so far
Please do give me a shout if you have any further questions
yes my ikea decking looked great for about 6 months now it looks realy rough and you cant make a good job of restaining it it goes patchy how is yours weathering
I have a covered screen porch that doesn’t get much sun or water
if it rains hard some water gets on floor threw the screen but not much
Do you think they will last longer since they will be covered under screen porch
I’d say you’ll have a better chance than I did 🙂
I bought ikea runnen deck tiles today but after reading your review i am planning to exchange these with skoghall
Visiting the Ikea store I saw these brown wood deck tiles
as well as grey plastic ones (the plastic ones were disappointing
I didn’t think to check the name of them
However the website (.ca and .com) lists the deck tiles as Runnen
I didn’t see the name Skoghall so I figured it was an old name that they changed to Runnen
When I search the website for Skoghall it comes up with bath mats
I assumed this review was actually a review of the Runnen tiles with it’s old name
The option still exists in the UK online store
Is there problems and mold growing underneath between the wood surface and your original floor
We have not noticed anything like that under our wood surface yet
.wondering how you are doing with your tiles
Also wondering if you think these could be placed onto of a flat grassy area as opposed to the concrete grounding
Personally I think if you put it on top of a grassy area they may start to sink in to the ground and the grass may start to come on top
Thanks for your detailed instructions and review
Too bad Sue’s didn’t hold up that well
I think she means are there edge covers for it
So if it’s on a porch you don’t walk up looking at black plastic under the decking
and they now do sell edging for these tiles
Thinking about these as an alternative and am concerned how they get through the winter
We’re thinking of processing the wood by using some oil
I am on my third season – have a balcony so the bare concrete looked horrible – laid down from April to September – drainage is great as the water does not sit on the wood where as the concrete always looked dirty and wet – 100% happy and easy to replace if damaged (no as yet) – even walking on in bare feet feels good – perfect option to expensive decking
You posted on the very same day I was looking for info on this product
I wanted to know if you used any type of trim around the edges
My plan to install isn’t wall to wall and I’d like to give it a nice tapered finish all around the edge
I’m glad to see updated comments as I’m looking into this product
My worry is scratching/wearing from any deck furniture
but perhaps there’s a spray or paint that will better protect the flooring
you’re welcome to use any outdoor treatment on this like you’d use on wood
this has been amazingly helpful thanks guys
We saw these at Ikea 2 days ago and almost purchased them but wanted to do a little research and measuring first
They are aesthetically pleasing and low priced
Thanks for the teak oil suggestion to help prevent fading
I am thinking about putting the wood squares down on my balcony- my only concern is – how the under-side of the squares will be on the new vinyl
they definitely don’t fly away no matter how windy it is
Do the tiles accumulate a mold underneath it
Does it damage the wood underneath the tile
How many times we should take all the tiles out & clean them by water & then put them back
the edges that do not clip (exposed edges) are the clips still visible
Though I think there is a new version of these which may have had them hidden
Are these tiles the same & has same reviews
Meaning they won’t slide in bad weather
I want to put this down in my front garden
Or is there something better that won’t rot to lay down under it to keep it even and not sink
I would recommend putting some kind of flat surface below it
It has plastic below so there is some structural integrity but it is not really designed to be on grass
Two years later these tiles fall apart and nails are sticking up everywhere
They may work well if the decking isn’t exposed to the elements
We are considering these for over our concrete patio and thinking we would like to only use them in the summer
Do you think they would be easy to take apart again
Hi I am thinking about buying these tonight
however the ground I am putting them on is not very even
It’s not terrible but in the same light it’s not great
I was thinking of putting sand down first and then putting these on top
I think it is best to put these on a hard surface
but yes,I would def suggest these to be on an even surface
uneven surfaces may encourage them to come apart or not stay clipped in
I’ve had the runnen tiles for about a year now
Started flipping them over and realized over half had mold growing on them
I guess it varies where you are in the country (located in the south)but completely disappointed with my purchase
IKEA didn’t do a very good job of protecting the tiles with sealant
How do you clean underneath it if things like food or liquid falls through
We just let it rain on them and that seems to keep them reasonably clean
We do sweep the top when things like leaves etc fall on it
I am considering applying these to an enclosed sun room with a concrete floor
KY and the sun room is not heated or cooled at this point so the ambient temperature will very season to season
Does anyone have a reference for this application and if so how did it hold up
I’m considering it as well and hoping it worked
We have considered putting these on our shower floor to get a nice spa feel
You’ll have to process the wood with some kind of a coating that makes it waterproof
We installed them in the spring of 2013 on a waterproof membrane flat roof
(1) the plastic on the bottom is a little sharp and punctured the membrane in a few spots over the years (and we’ve had a leak inside because of it)– not blaming the tiles
but something to be wary of if you are in a similar situation
(2) MANY of the individual wood slats have splintered and/or cracked in half
Our roof gets full sun and we’re in San Diego
The good news is that you can easily replace them
each one is screwed into the plastic mesh base
the screws do not hold up to the weather/water well and are rusted (and crumble easily)
I’m going to spend more $ on a more durable engineered/composite wood solution after we re-roof
In hindsight we should have given it a treatment
If it is slightly uneven I think you’ll be fine
Would like to use these on a front porch that has steps – concerned about the tracking under the tile showing along the edge of the steps
The tracking isn’t too thick so probably not too much of an issue in my head
Will work best if these fit well on your steps and don’t need cutting
are you still happy with your choice to use these
We are considering getting them but are weighing the pros and cons
They are definitely the most cost effective from all the ones i have seen
Way better than the concrete floor we had outside
The only thing I would change is to treat them with some kind of oil that means it handles rain and moisture better
We did that with other furniture – something like teak oil should work
Do these make any sound when you walk on them
Second question- earlier someone asked about installing on a step
I have a step thats about 9 inches wide so would need to cut
Can these be secured..nailed to step to keep them in place and hopefully prevent anyone from falling from a moving tile
I have installed on a concrete floor but they are not staying stable
How do you fix/secure the tiles to the under floor not only to each other
I did have two sides of them against walls
Does anyone have the grey plastic decking from Ikea
We are thinking of purchasing it but can’t find any reviews
thinking of getting the light grey plastic decking since the wood turns grey anyway and gets blotchy
I assume we won’t have to treat the plastic
This is a terrific thread – thanks for sharing
Did you buy or place an additional border to secure the tiles
Do you think they will last longer since they will be covered under screen porch
Ok I will quickly leave my experience which has been excellent
One person actually put sealant over them when he got them
than after 2 years pressure wash them very lightly and remove the dirt and dust and resel them again and again
$30 a can that covers about 150sf if you are good
Make sure yo get the stuff that you can place on top of anything old or new
others require you sand the surface clean of everything beforehand
go that route if you have a power sander and long large pieces of wood
Mine are placed on a finished concrete deck that slopes on all 4 corners to a drain in the center
If you love draining plants on top the tile under the pot will likely begin to rot or break
This is the best solution when trying to breathe some life into an otherwise drab surface or industrial setting
An existing flat’ish deck to serve as a good foundation but also allows drainage is key to longer term success
and if you don’t seal and reseal they will be gone in 2-3 years
and with an exact can cut them into even smaller squares to fit just about any size or shape
For people asking stupid questions like will they fly away in wind
because I have to assume you mean a tornado otherwise what are you talking about
they are so easy to assemble that I just put them all back together every morning after the midnight tornado hits
Would you have any idea if these could work on a tuff ground in our rented apartment small yard
I’d recommend it for concrete or paved floor
It’s pretty flimsy on its own so probably won’t do
This has been more than helpful in choosing to buy these for our back deck
Hi..has anyone tried the Runnen grass deck tiles – I’m wondering if it is pet friendly
Just wondering if the tiles should be removed during the cold of winter of Toronto

Debottlenecking of one production line in Skoghall will result in 100,000 t of additional capacity
Stora Enso will invest in board capacity expansion at the pulp and board mill in Skoghall
The upgrade will reportedly increase the mill's capacity above 900,000 tpy and drive growth in attractive market segments
such as liquid packaging board and coated unbleached kraft (CUK) board
"The board expansion in Skoghall will be implemented through debottlenecking of one of the existing production lines, and executed in two steps, utilising the scheduled maintenance stops," Stora Enso announced. However, the group decided not to go ahead with the originally planned pulp capacity expansion at the Skoghall mill
Stora Enso reportedly also commenced a pre-feasibility study for the conversion of the second fine paper machine to packaging board production at the Oulu mill in Finland
The company expects the study to be finalised in early 2022

The organising principle behind Nicolas Jaar’s work is to fight against logic
and the logics he fights against take various forms
there are two in particular; musical genre and nationalist narrative
It’s the frictions between elements of both that create the fuel for Jaar’s happysad musical alchemy
There’s a clear and very literal lineage behind this artistic outlook
the traits that constitute Jaar’s style are a distillation of concepts visible in the work of his father
the Chilean installation artist Alfredo Jaar
Jaar works primarily with community-based projects
The title page to his website features a couple of quotes which act as statement pieces to summarise his outlook
and the site could plausibly double up as a launch site for Sirens
The first quote comes from the Romanian philosopher Emil Cioran
‘The immense void I project upon the world
overcome by both pleasure and despair in the most contradictory harmonies.’ It’s a beautiful passage
and one that could constitute a verbal expression of the emotionally ambiguous component in the younger Jaar’s music
This time it’s from William Carlos Williams
a nineteenth century poet of dual United States and West Indian heritage
“It is difficult to get the news from poems/ but men die miserably every day for lack of what is found there”
This too seems to express an aspect of Nicolas’ work: not only the emotional
but the political strain that’s so visible on Sirens
It’s primarily the political that drives Alfredo’s art practice
he described the reactive nature of his work
how his creativity is a response to real-life events rather than a product of imagination alone
I do not stare at the blank page of paper and start inventing a world coming from my imagination
My imagination starts working based on research
based on a real-life event—most of the time
His works are underpinned by concrete geopolitical realities and a progressive
an event which can so easily descend into a networking event for the upper echelons
he scattered fragments of our global reality amongst the comfortable hubbub
His work Gift saw volunteers hand out gift-boxes to visitors
which opened up to reveal the image of Aylan Kurdi
the small boy photographed tragically dead on the beaches of Europe in September 2015
Alongside the image was a quote from a journalist Mario Calabresi
an urgent plea for the public not to look away
The imaginative component in handing out gift-boxes in the context of an art fair is typical of his work
which does not simply bash his audience over the head with the work’s political point but elevates it with a sense of the emotional
A highlight of his career was his turn of the millenium work The Skoghall Konsthall
for which he set up a sort of pop-up museum made of paper in the small
paper-producing town of Skoghall in Sweden
By constructing the museum out of the locality’s primary resource and then burning it to the ground
Jaar was able to create a provocative and transient spectacle that spoke to the lack of cultural provision in the area
and the potentially destructive impact of this lack
the imaginative and the emotional that rendered this such a typically Alfredo Jaar piece
It’s reminiscent of the burning house in Russian experimental filmmaker Tarkovsky’s The Mirror or of the same image in Charlie Kauffmann’s Synechdoche
Something about the image of a building burning slowly and deliberately in real time seems filmic
Jaar’s enflamed museum is like an image from Through A Glass Darkly but in the glorious technicolour of real life
He is most widely known for a work aimed at raising awareness about the Rwandan genocide that lasted six-years
perhaps the most widely known aspect of which is The Silence of Nduwayezu
Nduwayezu was one of many orphans Jaar met in Rwanda who had witnessed the brutal killing of their parents
Nduwayezu remained silent for weeks after the trauma
and Jaar documented what he has referred to as “the saddest eyes I had ever seen.” Nduwayezu’s silence acts as a sort of mirror to the international community’s silence during the devastating tragedy of the genocide
His son’s new LP begins with the sound of a breaking mirror
and the punishing backdrop of global tragedy
imaginative and infused with emotion; personal
So with lyrics and a tone that speaks almost directly to the themes addressed in his father’s vast corpus of work
the fact he used his artwork A Logo For America to adorn the album’s scratch-off cover makes perfect sense
Rallying against the predominant limiting of the word “America” to mean U.S
it’s a work that spoke out against the dominance of self-aggrandising U.S economic and political power in popular discourse and the diminution of Southern and Central American identity
Most strikingly when you look at the cover is not just that this is a good point: it’s the imaginative and emotional blow with which it’s delivered
the packaging of a powerful message with a wistful essence will be familiar
