students needed to sign in to a shared device before every lesson Teachers couldn’t begin before everyone was signed in students can just pick a tablet and start working right away Today’s students are growing up in a digital world They view laptops and mobile devices as all-in-one resources for both education and entertainment This high level of comfort with technology can lead to amazing discoveries when a student is doing research It can also result in careless clicking and security breaches School systems around the world are seeking ways to extend the benefits of digital technology and the internet to students without endangering the network Secure access to technology for every student and that was the key lesson for schools across the Södertälje kommun school system in Sweden The system educates about 15,000 students annually in preschools and optional upper-secondary schools offering vocational training and university preparation programs It also offers ongoing adult education courses through a separate but related division demand for mobile devices began to rise in about 2016 Individual schools across the municipality began purchasing mobile phones and tablets for use by staff and students circumventing the school system’s IT department There was no coordination or oversight between schools and the IT division Different generations of hardware were also represented that meant staff and students were using hundreds of devices that were not under the school system’s control “The schools were purchasing devices from different resellers and managing them manually.” This lack of oversight created serious issues for the Södertälje kommun school system The schools wanted to focus on teaching—not keeping the devices up-to-date and compliant requiring them to sign in and out of the devices repeatedly This unregulated access to online resources presented significant security concerns for the team Each school was setting up its own devices manually from loading applications to creating accounts but it’s a huge time commitment for 100 devices Even something as simple as signing everyone in to shared accounts could delay the start of class We get a really good overview of our devices and all of the reports we can bring out of Microsoft Intune we can make easy decisions about device management The Södertälje kommun government had invested in a mobile device management solution primarily for government but also used for school devices back in 2016 It was rolled out broadly to schools between 2017 and 2018 When the school system team renewed its effort to consolidate device management the team realized it had access to the Microsoft Intune mobile device management system at no additional cost through its Microsoft 365 license The municipality conducted a pilot program that entailed moving its 5,000 Windows devices to Intune wild West” devices from the schools across the system “We had very good results with the Microsoft Intune pilot program,” Ljungdahl says “None of the school devices were under our management before we started the pilot we were able to start streamlining the entire device management flow from placing purchase orders to onboarding users.” the Södertälje kommun school system migrated an additional 7,000 iOS and iPadOS devices All have been fully incorporated into the system-level Intune enabling the school system’s IT team to manage updates The team is now conducting a separate pilot to test Intune on approximately 70 MacOS devices that teachers and staff use at three separate schools The IT team is using Microsoft Entra for identity and access management across the school system. Now, students, teachers, and staff use Microsoft Entra to gain access to approved Microsoft 365 and third-party applications on school-owned devices and other third-party applications that support Microsoft Entra ID for sign-in easy sign-in experience across all school system assets All users have a single identity for signing in Microsoft Entra ID also provides strong authentication and risk-based so IT can protect sensitive data without compromising experience for its users The team is also now able to manage all associated identities and access for all owned applications across all devices in a central location The Södertälje kommun school system’s IT department uses the Conditional Access functionality of Microsoft Entra to address risk behaviors both tenant-wide and within some specific groups The school system has also begun adopting Microsoft Defender for Endpoint “We’ve been using the auto-investigation and remediation features for our Windows devices,” Ljungdahl says we’ve noticed big improvements in both automation and incident response.” The school system’s IT team plans to build on this early success by broadening its adoption of Defender for Endpoint offerings the team plans to implement Defender for Endpoint to its owned MacOS and iOS devices Also under consideration: adding reduction rules to its owned Windows devices Tightening security on student devices is key to protecting young learners “Entra identity protection together with Conditional Access gives us real-time security benefits against suspicious account activities,” says Ljungdahl “Not only do our identities stay secure and up-to-date with the capabilities built into Entra—we can control each application and set rules and requirements based on different applications.” Migrating classroom devices to Intune has greatly increased device security and compliance across the system The cost benefit has also been significant Intune is included in the system’s existing Microsoft 365 license so money that would have gone to another mobile device management system can now be used for educational purposes Moving to Intune has also simplified management “Before we moved all our iOS and Android devices to Intune It could be difficult for new administrators to learn two systems at the same time,” continues Ljungdahl we’re managing many different operating systems with Intune The difference is our users and administrators don’t have to have an in-depth knowledge of every technology to manage them in Intune We just set everything up in the background The monitoring and reporting features have also made a big difference “We get a really good overview of our devices and all of the reports we can bring out of Microsoft Intune,” Ljungdahl notes we can make easy decisions about device management.” Moving to Intune has streamlined the experience for staff and students Teachers couldn’t begin before everyone was signed in,” Ljungdahl says students can just pick a tablet and start working right away.” Find out more about Södertälje kommun on X, Facebook, and LinkedIn We had very good results with the Microsoft Intune pilot program None of the school devices were under our management before we started the pilot We are Microsoft Empowering others Our mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more Sweden — A person dressed all in black hurled a hand grenade into a shop in the crime-ridden suburb of Geneta in the Swedish city of on Södertälje on July 22 Several bystanders were injured and one woman in her 50s had to be airlifted to the hospital a man was shot and injured on a street nearby The spate of gang violence is all part of a brutal summer that spells trouble for Sweden’s government Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and his right-wing allies edged an election two years ago promising to end a decade of spiraling clashes between drug runners.  But the crime statistics make for chilling reading in a country of 10.5 million whose international image is one of a peaceful successful nation with a competitive economy and strong welfare protections it’s clear Kristersson’s government still has work to do There have been 148 shootings in Sweden this year so far that have killed 20 and injured 26 “Things can’t continue like this,” said Tony Aoun a 17-year-old student out shopping in Geneta “This has always been a strong community to be part of Sweden has emerged as a cautionary tale of a European country that failed to recognize an emerging threat from internationally linked drug gangs It is now scrambling to react to an escalation in violence as those gangs wage war on each other for control of lucrative local narcotics markets.  The Nordic state has among the highest rates of shooting deaths in Europe while scores of Swedish gang members have died over recent years a growing number of bystanders have also been killed and injured by stray gunfire and vaguely targeted bombings.  But arguably its most eye-catching policy initiative has been the rollout of so-called security zones A new law in place since April allows police to designate any area where they believe violence is imminent as a security zone They can then stop and search any citizen within that zone — something they wouldn’t normally be able to do unless they suspect that citizen of committing a crime.  The Geneta zone ran for two weeks from July 6 in an area around a row of small shops During a visit while the zone was in operation There was a visible police presence and signs said surveillance drones were overhead. Police also said they had plainclothes officers working in the area.  Some shoppers said they found the police stop-and-search policy intrusive worrying it could damage the authorities’ relations with the public.  Others said it was helpful and should be extended They worried the violence would come back as soon as the police wound down the zone.  When a young man was shot in a street nearby the next day two other teenagers were also arrested in connection with that attack.  appeared on the national evening news and spoke of the anguish gripping her town.  angry that their town is being associated with these criminals.” A spike in gang-related killings over recent years has seen Sweden move against a general trend of falling violence noted across much of the rest of Europe Experts say the government must demonstrate progress before the next election in 2026 with surveys showing it remains a top issue for voters.  “If crime reduction remains high on the political agenda … voters are likely to punish the government given that crime reduction has been a key plank of the policy program,” said Jonas Hinnfors a political scientist at Gothenburg University.  Opinion polls currently show the Social Democrat-led opposition is ahead of the government and allies by around 7 percentage points said no one policy measure would be enough to crack the gangs who have been growing stronger in towns like hers for years.  She called for more national and international inter-agency coordination to target gang leaders and their assets involving not only police but the tax office customs and the financial crimes agency.  “When crime is national or even international the response to it must also be so,” she said.  agreed that initiatives like the security zone in his area should be part of a bigger and sustained crackdown.  “The criminals just take their shit to nearby streets and come back when the police are gone.”  Sweden’s center left has lost ground to the far right It’s feared Russia could use the church as cover for future intelligence or sabotage operations Shootings by Swedish gang members in other countries ups pressure on government in Stockholm Salwan Momika, an Iraqi refugee in Sweden who sparked violent protests after burning the Qur’an was shot dead in an apartment in Södertälje The conviction of a man for burning a Qur’an brings us perilously close to reinstating blasphemy laws Momika’s story should have been a testament to Sweden’s role as a safe haven for dissidents it has exposed the country’s willingness to sacrifice fundamental freedoms to avoid upsetting religious sensitivities Sweden’s actions sent a clear message: if your speech provokes anger This is not the behavior of a country committed to protecting free expression—it is a country surrendering to intimidation Sweden’s failure to protect Salwan Momika is just one example of this alarming trend. In England, on February 4, 2025, Greater Manchester police arrested a 47-year-old (whom Focus for Western Islamism (FWI) will not name to protect whatever is left of his safety) for burning a copy of the Qur’an—an act that remains they effectively putt a target on his back designed to discourage others from engaging in similar acts of expression authorities ensured that he now faces a real risk of violence—an implicit endorsement of mob justice over the rule of law The same authorities consistently go out of their way to hide the identities of those who carry out terror attacks against innocent civilians as in the case of withholding the identity of the Southport killer Thankfully, the Free Speech Union (FSU) has stepped up to defend the U.K. citizen, condemning the police’s actions and offering him support In a climate where institutions increasingly side with those who wish to silence dissent through fear organisations like the FSU are critical in pushing back against this creeping authoritarianism Free Speech Union (FSU) director Lord Toby Young (Photo by By Raj Curry - Flickr via Wikimedia.) Free Speech Union (FSU) director Lord Toby Young wrote to Greater Manchester police warning that the burning “should never have been a police matter,” while naming the man “may well have placed him in great jeopardy.” chief executive of the National Secular Society told The Telegraph: “The conviction of a man for burning a Qur’an brings us perilously close to reinstating blasphemy laws.” But their intervention should not have been necessary The role of the police is to uphold the law impartially—not to act as enforcers of blasphemy taboos If burning a Bible or desecrating national symbols is legal (and it is) There cannot be one rule for one religion and another for the rest For years, we have seen protesters freely burn the flags of the U.K. and the United States—symbols that many hold dear We have seen violent rhetoric against the West openly espoused at demonstrations the full force of the law—and now public exposure—is brought down upon the individual responsible This inconsistency and blatant double standard in how British authorities handle acts of offensive expression suggests that free speech is no longer an equal right in Britain the right to offend depends on which group is being offended—and some If this situation weren’t bad enough, the Labour Party in the U.K. has now proposed the establishment of a 16-person council with the intention of devising an official government definition of Islamophobia which if implemented into a law would effectively criminalize “insulting” religious beliefs Though dressed up as protections against “hate crime” and for “social cohesion,” such legislation amounts to a de facto blasphemy law—one that would place criticism of religion (Islam in particular) beyond the reach of free debate This is precisely what Islamist hardliners have long demanded: legal mechanisms to silence their critics But this is not just about one religion. Once we start policing speech to prevent “offense,” there is no logical stopping point. Today it’s a criticism of Islam. Tomorrow, it could be satire, political dissent, or historical inquiry.Jawad Iqbal a Times of London columnist and a Muslim himself elucidated brilliantly in an article: “Special protection for Islam will only encourage racists.” Other prominent British Muslims have also voiced concern The former Home Secretary Sajid Javid argued that adopting the definition would “risk creating a blasphemy law via the back door.” The former Labour MP Khalid Mahmood said it could be used as a weapon to silence those accused of offending Islamic sensibilities The cases of Salwan Momika in Sweden and the Qur’an burner in Manchester should serve as a wake-up call governments are backing away from defending free speech bowing to those who would use threats of violence to dictate what can and cannot be said This is a profound betrayal of the values that underpin liberal democracy we will soon find ourselves living under a de facto blasphemy regime—one where certain ideologies are untouchable and criticism comes with serious personal risk We must demand that our governments protect free speech unequivocally They are part of a larger pattern: Western governments are retreating from defending free speech out of fear of violent backlash they betray the very values that make liberal democracy worth defending © 2025 Middle East Forum • E-mail: info@meforum.org • Tel: 1 (215) 546-5406 colleagues from both Södertälje and Kista will move to the KTH campus and this will mean shake-ups in several places Sing-sing and parts of the machine quarter are now being refurbished to meet the needs and requirements of the tenants for the work environment “The premises in Sing-Sing did not fulfil the requirements of a modern working environment for flexible working,” says Gunnar Malm “We look forward to letting the employees move in after the summer but there is a lot that needs to be done before then.” Sing-Sing is a K-marked building from 1948 that in recent years has mainly housed the ITM school's departments With its red staircase railings and glassed-in offices if you ask the older students who came up with the nickname The building is popular for events such as the President’s Professors' Breakfasts and conference meetings But when Gunnar Malm and colleagues from the Kista campus examined their future premises they went through the premises to find the right measures according to today's building standards for acoustics all video meetings require better sound insulation – a need that did not exist when the offices were built the department that is moving in has also realised that the kitchen will be a central meeting place Akademiska hus will begin the renovation work which in time will also benefit other staff in the building Changes will also take place in the Machine Quarter within the Department of Product Development (IPU) the office space is being prepared to accommodate some thirty employees from Södertälje all researchers and teachers in the production area will be gathered in one building “One advantage of the move is that we can create a unified education and research environment with a strong experimental environment for the production area,” says Magnus Wiktorsson we think that the standard of classrooms and offices is much more outdated on the KTH campus than what we are used to in Södertälje they have developed different types of offices where people can share rooms Space is also being made for smaller meetings digitally or one-on-one Together with the departments of Learning in Engineering Sciences which also recently moved in to the building they have ensured that all doors have windows to increase the amount of light Acoustic measurements and ventilation tests are also being carried out to check the working environment Classrooms and study areas at Brinellvägen 68 will also be renewed with new furniture and technology from Södertälje The starting point has been to reuse Södertälje's and Kista's modern furniture and technology as much as possible and now that the inventory is complete it remains to be decided where to place the surplus equipment there are empty spaces that could be furnished for students Magnus adds that much of the fine furniture from Södertälje will not be used at the ITM school and needs to circulate to others at KTH The Sustainability Office and the Real Estate Department have been close partners throughout the process and a Premises Council (Lokalråd) has analyzed the consequences for all relocations from different perspectives “There will be a lot of shuffling around on several parts of the KTH campus Several relocations have already begun and now adaptations are also being prepared to make space for new computer rooms” programme coordinator for the campus moves “The campus relocations result in a lot of adaptations to premises and it has been noted that the maintenance of the properties is neglected in some places We now have the opportunity to make demands on Akademiska hus to refresh worn premises.” Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version) KTH Royal Institute of Technology SE-100 44 Stockholm Sweden +46 8 790 60 00 Anglo-Swedish pharmaceutical group AstraZeneca is developing a state-of-the-art facility for manufacturing biological medicines in Södertälje The biologics manufacturing facility will be used for filling and packaging protein therapeutics AstraZeneca is investing more than Skr2.5bn (around $300m) in the state-of-the-art facility This investment is the first phase of a potential three-part programme by the company designed to expand biologics manufacturing capabilities AstraZeneca began plans to invest in the facility in May 2015 and began construction in August 2015 The plant will supply medicines for clinical trials from the end of 2018 with drugs for commercial use planned to be delivered from 2019 The factory is expected to create more than 150 jobs in Södertälje by 2019 The biologics manufacturing plant is being built at the Gärtuna plant in Södertälje The city was chosen as the location for biologics manufacturing due to the availability of a skilled workforce AstraZeneca aims to combine its expertise in biologics with the operational excellence of its domestic operations unit The plant will enable AstraZeneca to increase its capacity and flexibility to handle clinical trials and support the further commercial production of biologics It will supply medicines for clinical trial programmes run by AstraZeneca and MedImmune the company’s global biologics research and development arm The plant will support the development of drug candidates across all main therapy areas and will be aligned with investments in existing biologics manufacturing centres The factory will be equipped with advanced technologies that AstraZeneca has not previously used sewing and packaging will form a major part of the equipment in the factory most of whom have resided in barracks next to the factory A structured programme was created for preparing the manufacturing plant to start producing biologics The validation and testing of equipment at the site began in early 2018 The process operators are being simultaneously trained to handle the equipment before the start of operations The plant will start manufacturing drugs once it has achieved compliance with good manufacturing practice (GMP) standards AstraZeneca is a leading biopharmaceutical company that focuses on the discovery development and commercialisation of prescription medicines It is one of summer for large-scale production of electric vehicles the conditions for fast and efficient manufacturing flows are in place In April, Scania and Northvolt unveiled a jointly developed battery cell designed for heavy-duty transport The cell is produced at the gigafactory Northvolt ETT in northern Sweden and will be assembled into packs at the new 18,000-square-meter plant in Södertälje “The shift to electrified solutions is the biggest transformation in the history of transport and 2023 is the year when it truly takes off The proof points are being launched one by one and the 1,5 billion SEK investment in this new battery assembly is one of them” “I am extremely proud of all colleagues who have put their hearts and minds into this we have made it our purpose to drive the shift towards a sustainable transport system With the battery assembly in operations we have one of the key enablers in place to accelerate the shift to electrification” “Despite a rapidly changing business landscape our promise to always put our customers first remains Being premium means that we deliver solutions that are both of the highest quality – and sustainable The cell being assembled into electric and autonomous vehicles at its Södertälje site the development will cost Skr 975m (US$98m) “Scania already has a test track that was built in the mid-1960s The development of electrified and autonomous vehicles requires new functionalities than what we have at the present track We for instance need to be able to simulate different traffic situations a typical challenge would be when approaching a busy roundabout (traffic circle) with a lot of vehicles moving in different speeds or standing still Scania’s R&D team has developed the specification with support from external consultants the team benchmarked against test tracks mainly in Europe An external contractor will be hired to build the facility Futureproofing was important to ensure the track remains current for the foreseeable future “To make the new test track relevant for the coming years We have achieved that by placing roads and areas in a way so that we can build up different test scenarios when we see the need We have also prepared for communication between vehicles and smart traffic signs or maybe a future traffic management system The track will of course be prepared for solutions such as electric highways and powerful chargers for electrified vehicles “Exactly what the future might bring is of course hard to predict in detail that is why it is so challenging – and interesting – to create a purpose-built testing and proving ground like this and that is why it needs to be roomy and flexible to start with,” concludes Hult Rachel's career in journalism has seen her write for Head of the Department of Production Engineering (IPU) to talk about risk assessments and industrial partnerships By autumn 2025, all employees will have left KTH Södertälje, and this autumn, students at the MSc programme in Industrial Technology and Sustainability will already have much of their teaching at KTH Campus. Anna Jerbrant , Project Manager for the Södertälje move, and Magnus Wiktorsson are at the centre of the relocation puzzle In addition to them and IPU management group program directors and student representatives "The dialogue is very important," says Anna Jerbrant "In March and April there were several hearings with the students at all programmes affected and I was asked questions about how empty the Södertälje campus will be next semester and how the study places on the KTH Campus will be sufficient These are examples of issues we are working hard on right now in dialogue with the student unions (THS and Telge Teknologsektion) all employees affected by the move had the chance to contribute to risk assessments both those moving from Södertälje and those receiving staff in Stockholm and Flemingsberg Magnus Wiktorsson takes his responsibility for the work environment seriously and sees a need to look carefully at office and lab space “We predict that conflicts could arise around different ways of working we need to create an understanding of each other's working methods and have open communication” “It is also likely that we will have an increased workload during the academic year 2024/2025 while we at the same time need to conduct good teaching and research we are already establishing common working methods for workforce planning We also need to have a close dialogue with employees about each individual's situation” has led to a hiring freeze and stopped investments changes are being made to education and course offerings while a number of people will leave KTH due to temporary positions at their own request and through retirements “We are looking at the needs of KTH and working with different groups of staff and activities separately One group of teachers from the Technical Preparatory Year will move to Flemingsberg in July 2025 They visited in April to familiarise themselves with their new colleagues and look at the premises” “Other teachers and researchers at IPU are planned into IPU's premises at KTH Campus the situation is a little more difficult to plan because we have many uncertainties in the finances and the educational offer and we encourage employees to raise questions and concerns to their closest manager Dialogue has also been conducted with key partners such as Scania Södertälje Municipality and Södertälje Science Park during the spring a dedicated working group will compile the needs and contributions KTH can continue to make to ensure a strong knowledge environment in Södertälje "Both Scania and AstraZeneca are still very important partners for KTH," says Magnus Wiktorsson "There are parts of our education and research that have a great need for a presence in Södertälje and we want to enable that we also see a need for developed forms of collaboration with the industry which will be developed into more concrete relocation plans by early spring 2025 IPU staff will be regularly informed at meetings in various forms "Many of us are working on planning all the different details of the move right now” “Everyone concerned will be involved in due course but you will have to be patient until the beginning of the autumn semester." using ABB’s Advanced Digital Services powered by ServicePort 800xA Performance Service ABB has implemented the software-based service platform ServicePort as part of a multi-year service agreement The agreement includes 800xA Performance Service which uses data collected during scheduled and on-demand analyses for comparison against best practices and standards to detect performance irregularities The collected data is then classified based on established key performance indicators (KPIs) to provide a list of items that are prioritized based on severity This analysis allows tracking and the development of accurate trend performance histories so that more decisions can be made with increased knowledge to make systems perform better with higher availability The agreement also includes ABB’s Cyber Security Monitoring Service powered by ServicePort classifies and helps prioritize opportunities to improve control system security The Cyber Security Service Monitoring Service collects system data for comparison against industry best practices and standards to detect weaknesses This pinpoints areas that require action to help protect the control system by ensuring it has multiple layers of security The Cyber Security Monitoring Service is non-invasive the Cyber Security Monitoring Service provides continuous and periodic or regularly scheduled security reviews The Loop Performance Monitoring Service implemented at Söderenergi presents a complete report of process deviation in control loops giving plant managers the opportunity to make corrections Now plant personnel It is quite an important facility within the company’s headquarters in Sweden, alongside the new battery assembly plant (equipped with ABB robots), as well as the test track optimised for electric and autonomous vehicles that will be ready in the coming years showed for the first time at Busworld in 2019 Scania battery lab in consists of three 250-square metre test halls for battery cells and each area is its own fire compartment for safety The increase in capacity compared to the “old” laboratory is huge and soon Scania will be able to offer vehicles with batteries capable of 1,000 kWh About 20 test rigs are currently in the lab Scania can test the performance of battery packs on operational electric trucks and buses without removing batteries Vehicles are parked close to the lab and connected to testing equipment The test equipment is delivered by Keysight a leading test and measurement equipment provider for e-mobility among other things Keysight has delivered a holistic solution with products for testing batteries at cell level including the software to control the test stands as well as program and monitor battery tests Scania battery lab lab can carry out tests on 170 objects simultaneously The thing with testing batteries is that it takes time It is the equivalent to seven years on the road We also have this enormous chamber where we can put a whole power train If we use that instead of real-life winter tests The lab primarily focuses on battery performance and lifespan evaluation in varying climate conditions from -40°C to 70°C Scania’s engineers examine and identify the best operational conditions for the battery considering things such as temperature setpoint state of charge window and charging power profile for tailored utilization in optimizing battery life and customer needs “It was truly demanding to try and specify the needs we have today when the construction began a few years back Some things weren’t even in people’s minds back then But we see a need to intensify battery testing and tailored deployment That is why we invest EUR 15,5 million in this new battery laboratory” Head of Test Cell Operation Battery/E-components “We have trained for this massive transformation and industrial upscale for some years where we add sensors and similar equipment I wouldn’t be surprised if we need even more space in a few years It’s mostly about how fast we can build new facilities” your new go-to podcast to spice up your weekday mornings with relevant news and behind-the-scenes from Brussels and beyond From the economy to the 90,000 inhabitants have roots in the Middle East Since autumn of last year Sweden has given permanent residence permits to a growing number of Syrian refugees Robert and his family were welcomed by Ayoub Stefan the Syrian-Orthodox priest at Saint Gabriel one out of six Assyrian churches in the town The family fled their home-town Al-Hasakah where Robert In the coming months more Christian refugees are expected to arrive in Södertälje – from Syria but also from Iraq “Our people who come from Iraq as Christians it is difficult for Christians to live there We have so many people killed,” Stefan told euronews Millions of Syrian and Iraqi refugees stay in camps in or near their home countries Only a relatively small number try to reach Europe The first Assyrians reached Södertälje 50 years ago so many Syrians and Iraqi have relatives there Saint Gabriel is a small church installed in the ‘Ronna centre’ between shops and services some call it a social hot spot – the jobless rate is higher than elsewhere in Sweden Many refugees cannot find work and some Iraqis do not have a permanent residence permit although they lived through a nightmare too Iraqi refugee Kheder Elias says and the choice is between paying or dying: “At the beginning we paid… but when they came again I found it difficult to pay… They kidnapped me and my daughter… but my good luck made the driver to collide with another car – I opened the door and run away.” The family is highly motivated to integrate into Swedish society about the flourishing kidnapping business run by the terrorists: “I know two Christians the kidnapping is directed against poor people rich people… everyone… so I was really afraid The extortion racket scares minorities such as the Christians out of Iraq and Syria His daughters Merella and Adella try to make as many Swedish friends as possible I learnt every single day about 10 new words and I spoke Swedish with my cousins who had already been living here for some time They know Swedish pretty well,” said Adella He arrived from Syria six months ago and joined the youth team of Sweden’s most exotic football club ‘The Assyrian Super Stars’ Most players are middle-eastern Christians but Muslims and other religions are welcome too in war-ridden Syria and Iraq it fades away “There is real pressure against Christians in Syria: Christian women are sexually attacked Christian men are discriminated against too when they openly wear their Christian cross they are considered to be faithless outsiders,” Ibrahim Touma explined got a work permit and thereby a legal way to enter Sweden Aho Gabriel was smuggled out of Syria illegally “To get to Sweden I had to pay the traffickers more than 12,000 euros,” he claimed Ninous Toma is Assyriska Föreningen’s youth team trainer: “Now with these Islamists and their so-called Islamic State it’s completely different They want to drive the Christians from the region as quickly as possible Fear is palpable in the Christian community Ibrahim lives on the outskirts of Södertälje Södertälje is run by a Social Democratic mayor but during the last elections the anti-immigrant party got more votes than usual Local politicians want better burden-sharing among municipalities “One of our relatives was hijacked by the terrorist al-Nusra group we didn’t know if he had been killed already That’s why my family got worried and pushed us to leave the country.” Södertälje’s Syrian Orthodox Cathedral and the Assyrian Cultural Centre are located in an industrial area So far there have been two suspected arson attacks the chairman of the Assyrian Federation of Sweden speaks up for stabilising the refugees in the Mideast Pushing Christians out of the region would end a culture that is several thousand years old “I get news that each day between 10 to 20 Assyrian families leave Iraq right now Christians are now being eradicated from the area very effectively Our key demand for politicians and governments is to help the Assyrians to remain in the Middle-East,” says Yakoub Yakoub has a Skype appointment with a Christian friend in Iraq who fled Mosul when the terrorists approached The former shop-owner found refuge in Dohuk in Iraqi Kurdistan For security reasons he opts for a pseudonym – ‘Elia’ “Did you experience any discrimination between Muslims and Christians?” Yakoub asks his friend “Don’t think that this has just started now,” insists ‘Elia’ “Christians never lived freely there they were not really respected: I remember every Friday at their Friday prayer “What do you think about arming the Assyrians in Iraq?” asks Yakoub The answer is unhesitating: “Of course they should have the right to defend themselves.” His dream is to become an architect or construction engineer how she can ease refugees’ integration into the very different Swedish way of life “In the beginning I explain to them the new society they will live in from now on: we make a lot of trips to discover the capital Many of the refugees risk getting trapped in their own small world But it’s important to participate in society,” she says The Swedish Public Employment Service and Swedish universities have launched an initiative to help people like Robert to establish themselves professionally as soon as possible after their arrival in Sweden Robert has another appointment with Horea Arizcurinaga “In the medium or long-term future I hope to be able to create my own company just like I did in the country of my birth “Let’s be aware of the qualifications you and other refugees have bringing rock-solid experiences to Sweden!” insists Horea “The companies of this country will be glad to profit from your knowledge.” no other EU country takes in as many asylum seekers as Sweden It has became a safe haven for at least some of the persecuted Christians seeking shelter and hope Will other European countries take the same action soon the number of Iraqi arriving in Sweden rose 80 percent the number of Syrians skyrocketed 140 percent so far (January 2014 to end of September 2014) Sweden will take in 36,000 asylum seekers from Syria and Iraq Plus an estimated 20,000 Syrians arriving in Sweden by using the legal framework of family reunification officials believe there will be a new peak in the spring with Iraqi refugees starting to arrive in Sweden in big numbers Conservative official estimations are that the total number of Syrian and Iraqi asylum seekers arriving in Sweden next year could total at least 33,500 An unknown number of family reunifications has to be added to this figure Bonus interview: Boel Godner, mayor of Södertälje The Swedish town Södertälje takes in more refugees from Syria and Iraq than most other towns in Sweden and Europe Euronews spoke to the of the Assyrian Federation of Sweden Euronews met Afram Yakoub in Södertälje Clever corvids become newest weapon in Södertälje’s war against street litter Crows are being recruited to pick up discarded cigarette butts from the streets and squares of a Swedish city as part of a cost-cutting drive The wild birds carry out the task as they receive a little food for every butt that they deposit in a bespoke machine designed by a startup in Södertälje “They are wild birds taking part on a voluntary basis,” said Christian Günther-Hanssen The Keep Sweden Tidy Foundation says that more than 1bn cigarette butts are left on Sweden’s streets each year Södertälje spends 20m Swedish kronor (£1.6m) on street cleaning Günther-Hanssen estimates his method could save at least 75% of costs involved with picking up cigarette butts in the city Södertälje is carrying out a pilot project before potentially rolling out the operation across the city with the health of the birds being the key consideration given the type of waste involved 0:49Clever crows: birds use tools in same way as great apes and humans – video New Caledonian crows are as good at reasoning as a human seven-year-old making them the smartest birds for the job Günther-Hanssen said: “They are easier to teach and there is also a higher chance of them learning from each other there’s a lower risk of them mistakenly eating any rubbish “The estimation for the cost of picking up cigarette butts today is around 80 öre [Swedish change] or more per cigarette butt this would maybe be 20 öre per cigarette butt The saving for the municipality depends on how many cigarette butts the crows pick up.” a waste strategist at Södertälje municipality said the potential of the pilot depended on financing “It would be interesting to see if this could work in other environments as well Also from the perspective that we can teach crows to pick up cigarette butts but we can’t teach people not to throw them on the ground The police announced Friday that stop and search zones are to be introduced in areas of Södertälje due to the risk of serious violence following Tuesday's fatal shooting in the Blombacka area of the city The stop and search zones in Västra Blombacka and parts of Geneta will go into effect tomorrow There will be more police officers present than usual and they may stop and frisk people as they see fit Radio Swedenengelska@sverigesradio.se your ride might be charging up for the rest of the route A new Swedish bus system being tested in the city of Stockholm can wirelessly recharge in just seven minutes offering a model for more efficient electrical vehicle technology for the masses The 755 line in Södertälje now includes a wireless inductive charging system that can replenish the power supply on the Scania-made hybrid buses that run the route every day While the experimental vehicles still need to be charged overnight the wireless technology improves efficiency and “The most important question for me is how you’re going to make this technology a reality for the city and help make it fossil fuel free?” says Maria Xylia a doctoral candidate at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology who is working with the municipality and local utility to test the new system Stockholm has made impressive strides in switching to a greener transportation system The city already achieved its 90% fossil-free fuels goal for public buses last year and the nation wants to be carbon-neutral by 2050 This technology will help make it even easier to move away from fossil fuels since more convenient electrical charging gives the city and transportation authority more flexibility in power generation (as opposed to relying on biofuels) Xylia has studied city transport routes and created a map with the most efficient locations for charging stations; according to her research proper planning and placement could cut energy consumption in half is the relative lack of new infrastructure needed to set up such a system This 8 kilometer-long (4.9 miles) route has a single charging station as opposed to the tracks and overhead wires that come with light rail or trolleys so there’s less construction and disruption when setting up a new route Xylia expects that the system will save money over time due to reduced maintenance costs The new bus generation of Scania is – also – electric the group has made available for a test drive its new 100 per cent electric Citywide Production of the fully electric Scania Citywide we find a central motor with peak of 300 kW for 210 Nm torque (continuous output: 250 kW) Focusing on the vehicles we had the opportunity to test in Södertälje the capacity of the (eight) battery modules is 254 kWh (the technical sheets says it can go up to 330 kWh): four are located at the rear Such capacity suggests a focus on fast charging (an application where most of the time Pantograph for opportunity charging is available together of course with CCS2 plug-in systerm In the future it will be equipped with Northvolt battery systems So we will soon see more Scania Citywide BEV on the streets. Series production is in the starting blocks» Ms Carmo e Silva added: «We see a continuing shift towards electrification is of course contributing to this development. Battery electric buses are also coming closer to buses with combustion engines when it comes to operational costs and this will strengthen even more the demand They are now an important part of the city bus market and this will continue to grow» according to Scania is not a silver bullet: «It depends both on the regions and on the applications» On the other hand, recently the subsidiary Scania Mexico signed to the project ZEBRA (Zero Emission Bus Rapid-Deployment Accelerator) which is led by the International Council on Clean Transportation and the Climate Change Leadership Group ICCT and C-40 To properly evaluate Evan Bouchard is to understand that the bad in his game is noticeable to evaluate defencemen is to understand the reality of those two things You don’t often have to look very far to find what makes a forward tick when your eyes are watching the puck and the puck’s on their stick it’s harder to turn your focus to the defender that doesn’t we’re more likely to notice the big mistake they make that leads to a goal than in all of the little things they do around the puck when they don’t have it few grab us in control like the forwards do The Erik Karlssons and Quinn Hugheses have always been the exception In 2018, as part of The Gifted, my annual 10-part series on prospects and their differences, I wrote about how that “eye test” we always talk about can fail us with defencemen, and how Bouchard is the perfect case study in those extremes My evaluation of his game, then, which ranked him No. 7 on my board (he went 10th to the Oilers) Almost exactly two years after that evaluation is entering a window in his career where he’s expected to move from “NHL prospect” to “NHL player.” And while he awaits a pivotal training camp he has elected to play in Sweden’s second-tier pro league The question: What has changed and what does his latest sample size of play tell us about his NHL readiness for the 2020-2021 Oilers season The data suggests that Bouchard has immediately become one of the league’s best players — and his team’s No which leads all HockeyAllsvenskan players and is 4:15 more per game than his nearest teammate He has three goals and two assists (both primary) for five points in nine games where Södertälje SK are 4-4 with him on the ice His 35 shots on goal (3.9 per game) lead all defencemen and sit third in the league overall And though his 34 penalty minutes lead the league in the wrong category 20 of those minutes were a game-misconduct assessed after the buzzer of his second game But the data has never been unkind to Bouchard and out-produced just about every defenceman his age in just about every league he has ever played in And most of the other periphery factors in player development have ever lacked either. He’s a right-shot defenceman who is listed at 6-foot-3 and 194 pounds So it’s the heavy usage and his success within that usage that requires further examination to come to the right conclusions about where he’s at I reviewed the tape of more than 200 of his shifts across those nine games Note: Bouchard played a 10th game on Friday night A lot of what was true of Bouchard’s game two years ago remains true now Players rarely really transform themselves But there have been improvements in several important areas that are worth dissecting as well as some continued deficiencies that 17 in all clips) is still a low slapshot shooter who gets pucks through and hits the target to crate rebounds This approach to shooting is a double-edged sword His ability to get pucks through and keep them from sailing high over the net by trying to be too cute with his shot location is an undeniably great quality and one more young players would be well-served to emulate He’s not shooting to pound the puck past goalies or beat them above their glove or blocker By shooting low and hard — but not too hard — he’s able to control his shot from long range even if it might not cleanly beat goalies as often as some volume shooters do he’s creating havoc in front of the net and his shots are missing or getting blocked much less often: And the result has still always been impressive goal creation because that’s what happens when you have a repeatable skill in the offensive zone With the right traffic in front and a defencemen who you can trust to hit the net his actual act of shooting doesn’t flail or force him off balance But there are also times when his reliance on a wind-up can work to his detriment which is where that slow movement comes in and wind-up for a shot almost every time he chooses to shoot if there isn’t the proper traffic from his teammates or off-puck movement from him the time it takes to get his shot off can turn a make a lot of his shots completely unthreatening He has the skill to mix it up more than he does too I would like to see him bait shot and release with a pass a lot more Because his heads-up approach to receiving a pass helps him identify available teammates when he isn’t so shot-focused This shot-pass is a good example of that (watch the way he shortens his wind-up when he identifies a teammate as a target for a redirect): He needs to show this kind of creativity and intention (he knows he’s passing there and everything else is a ploy) more consistently even when the offensive zone is more crowded I’d rather see him look to bait a defender and then pivot into a shot if the defender doesn’t bite than just sell shot the whole way and lose some of that unpredictability He’s got the skill to look pass and hold to shoot if he needs to: One of the things that has begun to emerge as more of a layer in his game That’s largely because his skating has improved in a couple of key ways (he’s always had the puck skill needed to protect one-on-one) His improved skating and the improved comfort level carrying the puck are evident not only in transition leading the rush but also within the offensive zone where he has begun to move his feet more and take pucks low with more aggression Though his straightaway stride still splays from the knees instead of the hips a little too much which results in his chest hanging a bit too far in front off his feet Bouchard is clearly generating more power through his stride which has helped him pull away from pressure more consistently (Nice cut when the second layer of pressure comes there too Players with his length can often struggle to side-step in the same way smaller players do but he has come a long way in that regard as well.) And while his stride above still isn’t pretty through its first few strides part of that is because he’s in a rush to escape the pressure and it’s breaking down a little his posture actually looks a lot more balanced and comfortable than it used to when he’s moving He’s also a little more fluid through his crossovers than through his pushes which you can see in the bit of a gallop he uses to push away from the forechecker here: It’s nice to see his footwork transition effectively from his heels (where he catches it) and then forward onto his toes to demonstrate some nice four-way mobility more smoothly than he used to as well: But the development of his comfort level from a standstill or within the offensive zone is more noteworthy than in transition The lead-the-game-up-ice skill should’ve always been there for a top player so he’s playing a bit of catch-up as a carrier I’ve been particularly impressed by his willingness to attack instead of making the available play when he has been caught flat-footed if his teammates don’t make themselves available here he’s probably sending this puck deep rather than committing to a fake and skating it in for a controlled entry: in place of making his plays while standing still or through a quick shuffle from the top of the zone Bouchard has also begun to try to draw more attention by hanging onto the puck Watch here the way he uses his puck control skill to carry from low to high and then switch for a little drop pass that gives his teammate open space in the corner of the zone he just pulled everyone out of: it’s the same idea: Bouchard carries low to high there’s open space left in the right-wing corner below the goal line Bouchard’s also talented enough that when he attacks in those ways he doesn’t have to rely on drawing pressure and then deferring like he does in the above sequences he can beat the first layer of pressure with skill like he does off the flank on this play to the slot: when you blend all of the skills I’ve examined thus far can be some impressive individual creation and that heads-up playmaking when the attention comes And here’s some of that creativity when on a little backhand flip pass to the slot from the top of the offensive zone — and while under tremendous pressure from three players: He’s never going to be a dominant skater or carrier he’s still going to look to hit a seam more often than not like he smartly does on this cross-ice pass: But instead of making his outlet pass early he may now delay a little longer than he used to until his teammates get to where he wants them his average skating still does mean that he’s too giving in his gaps combined with some of that ongoing lackadaisicalness It can mean that even when he knows the play that needs to be made — when he knows he needs to step up — that he may have to act in desperation from time-to-time because he either can’t close the gap quickly enough or he wasn’t playing tightly enough to begin with: he’s often a step behind the opposing carrier and spends a lot of time chasing when he can’t get to the inside on his man Some of his improved puck confidence and skating has helped his D-zone game even though his gap is loose and his stick isn’t particularly active on the outside-in pass that creates the entry for Mora IK and then he uses his feet to help create a pass: That escapability from a standstill has definitely been a marked improvement in his game recently Sometimes it just means keeping an opposing player on your back for long enough for your partner to rotate into space like he does at the tail end of this sequence below the goal line The more consistently he can avoid getting trapped in a pinch along the boards Because he’s always had great small-area awareness Bouchard does a masterful job executing on bump plays under pressure An updated evaluation of Bouchard’s game reveals that though he’s probably never going to take a massive leap forward in some areas his game has progressed in some pretty clear ways helping him escape pressure in his own zone and create in motion more often in the offensive zone he’s standing around less than he used to and trying to mix in a series of fakes more than he used to That has helped him make plays with more delay and intention instead of having to rush passes or shots all of the time though he has always done an excellent job at executing through those quick passes and shots (and will continue to) But he’s also not a liability in any one area anymore and his game now has more variety than it did a step I believe he’s now ready to make — the NHL step (Photo: Curtis Comeau / Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) a startup is training wild crows to pick up cigarette butts from the streets In the Swedish city of Södertälje, wild crows volunteer to pick up cigarette butts from the streets in exchange for some food According to the Keep Sweden Tidy Foundation 62% of all litter is cigarette butts and more than one billion of them are left on the country’s streets each year the crows can help cut the costs which are spent on cleaning up the streets the city spent 20 million Swedish kronor (over 2 200 000 dollars) Each time the voluntary crows put a cigarette butt into the machine which is designed by Corvid Cleaning they receive a snack According to Günther-Hanssen estimates that the city would save at least 75% of the costs that goes to picking up these butts Södertälje is conducting a pilot project to make sure the bird's health is unaffected considering the type of waste they are dealing with the New But what about some insight from a fan of the Swedish team he's playing for Let's be honest: none of us knows a ton about Hockey Allsvenskan But that's where the Bruins' newest big prospect Pastrnak left his native Czech Republic to further his career by playing professionally in Sweden as the Swedish leagues tend to have a higher profile than those in the Czech Republic It's gone pretty well for him so far: he's recorded 27 points in 47 Allsvenskan games as a teenager and did well enough to turn himself into a first-round NHL draft pick a Bruins fan who counts Södertälje SK as his hometown team has been watching Pastrnak since his arrival in the land of Tre Kronor I reached out to Erik to get his thoughts on the Czech forward what makes him so exciting and what to expect from him going forward Erik's comments have only been edited for clarity's sake Sweden's second tier. How would you rate the level of play in the league in comparison to the NHL but during the lockout Södertälje had players like Matt Read Jonathan Ericsson and Niklas Grossman on the team Other [former] players from Södertälje are Anze Kopitar It´s a mix of young talented players and veterans The most positive thing about the league is that young players get lots of responsibilities and playing time 2) You told me on Twitter that Pastrnak "dominated" as an 18-year-old. What about his play makes you think he was so dominant He played on the first line with William Nylander (picked by Toronto Pastrnak was the leading scorer on the team even though his season ended early with a concussion It´s not only the scoring; he is also very creative and strong on the puck and makes his line mates better what would you say Pastrnak's biggest strengths are? Biggest areas for improvement He can change directions and make sudden turns in the corners He also has very good hands and is a natural scorer with a really good shot His compete level is very high and he is very responsible in his back checking The biggest area of improvement is his strength and also his decision making with the puck but he will need to add about 15 pounds to his frame 4) Where do you see Pastrnak's ceiling being in the NHL I’m sure he will be at least a first or second line player His game is more suited for a top line rather than a checking line 5) Who in the NHL would you currently compare him to The player that comes to mind is Phil Kessel Pastrnak can fly on the wing and is also a good scorer but Pastrnak is much more physical and is not afraid to go into the corners Another player that comes to mind is Brad Marchand change directions and finish with a good shot 6) What is your favorite thing about Pastrnak He seems to be very popular in the dressing room What I really appreciate about him is that he really is a team player and his compete level which many players with his skills don’t necessarily have I can imagine that Chiarelli and Neely fell for the same things so he is dedicating all his success and drive to get better to him 7) Would you say he has a lot of talent around him at Södertälje or is he doing most of the scoring/work on his own I would say he can score on almost any line But I can really see him being a 30-40 goal scorer on a good line in the future 8) How far away do you think Pastrnak is from North American hockey I think he needs at least one more year before coming over I’m sure he could play in the AHL right now but he will benefit from playing on the first line in Södertälje for one more year It depends on the openings that Bruins will have on their top lines in the coming years because I don´t think they will bring him in to kill penalties Follow Erik on Twitter for more Swedish hockey insight The port of Södertälje in Sweden has received the first Liebherr LHM 420 mobile harbour crane that can run on fossil free diesel The crane has a lifting capacity of 124 tonnes at a radius of 16 m It is the first Liebherr mobile harbour crane to run on HVO diesel – a premium fossil free diesel product made of 100 percent renewable raw materials the fuel does not release any new carbon dioxide into the atmosphere said: “The timing for us to invest in a third mobile harbour crane is perfect It means that we can offer our customers a more efficient handling and permits continuing growth within the container segment as well as project cargoes.” www.soeport.se/en/ www.liebherr.com Australia’s port of Townsville is investing in a 14 ha project cargo laydown area at its East Port Precinct that will support future industry development and renewable energy projects across the region Shipyard and construction company Ravestein is delivering a ro-ro pontoon for Peel Ports Group in the UK The UK’s port of Blyth reported record financial performance for the fourth consecutive year Italian lifting and transport company Autotrasporti Porro has added two all-terrain cranes to its fleet by purchasing an AC 7.450-1 and AC 4.080-1 from Tadano Italian heavy lift specialist Marraffa has invested in an Enerpac JS-250 jack-up system for future bridge launching projects in what is the company’s first Enerpac heavy lift system USA-based heavy lifting firm Engineered Rigging will host its annual heavy lifting equipment showcase on June 10-12 at its equipment depot and service centre in Russellville Site powered by Webvision Cloud Björn Borg is a Swedish former tennis player who became a global household name in the mid-1970s. Back then, Borg held the No. 1 ranking for an outstanding 109 weeks as well as won 11 Grand Slam titles—including five consecutive Wimbledon championships. The tennis prodigy's powerful two-handed backhand and exceptional footwork made him a formidable opponent to fellow top players like John McEnroe and Jimmy Connors Borg grew up in the industrial city of Södertälje The garage door of his childhood home played a significant role in his tennis development Borg would spend hours hitting tennis balls against the garage door imagining himself playing important matches while using the garage door as a makeshift opponent This became the training ground where he honed his skills and developed his famous baseline game In 1995, long after the Borg family had moved, the property was renovated and the garage door was left in a storage room. There it gathered dust until 2013, when it was featured in an episode of the Swedish version of Antiques Roadshow the mundane object was valued at about €13,000 thanks to its connection to Borg the garage door was acquired by the Municipality of Södertälje in order to exhibit it as Björn Borg memorabilia It is now permanently displayed at the Torekällberget Open-Air Museum as a symbol of the tennis legend's humble background but also as a reminder that greatness can be cultivated anywhere Björn Borg's garage door is located in the basement of the green wooden building called Handelsboden (The Provision Store) at the Torekällberget Open-Air Museum Entrance is free and the current opening hours can be found on the museum website there is a parking lot just outside the entrance It's also possible to get there by catching bus No 751 from the Södertälje Centrum station (where the suburban train from Stockholm arrives and departs) The childhood home of a Tampa sports legend now houses at its Swedish headquarters in Södertälje the OEM noted that the start of operations would ‘enable serial production of heavy-duty premium electric vehicles’ “I am extremely proud of all colleagues who have put their hearts and minds into this,” said Christian Levin president and CEO of Scania and Traton Group With the battery assembly in operations we have one of the key enablers in place to accelerate the shift to electrification.” Scania and Northvolt unveiled a jointly-developed battery cell design intended for heavy-duty transport The design is described as having ‘outstanding performance’ and ‘a uniquely low carbon footprint’ The cell is being produced at the Northvolt ETT gigafactory in northern Sweden and these will be assembled into packs at the new 18,000 square metre plant in Södertälje The chassis line at the Södertälje plant was redesigned over the summer to support large-scale electric vehicle production Having the pack assembly plant in close proximity will help to achieve efficient manufacturing flow The highly-automated production line will have 550 Scania employees who will deal with incoming components Speaking about the new battery plant and what it means for Scania and its customers commented: “Despite a rapidly changing business landscape Being premium means that we deliver solutions that are both of the highest quality - and sustainable “The cells being assembled into modules and packs is a perfect example of this It has the capacity to power trucks for 1.5 million kilometres – equivalent to the truck’s lifetime It is a privilege to drive change together with all our partners and customers.” Scania is aiming to claim a 50% market share in the heavy-duty electric vehicle market by 2030 You’ve reached your limit of premium article views with a gross vehicle weight of up to 64 tonnes including new electric drive systems in five power levels of 270 as well as new batteries with cells from Northvolt that will be assembled into packs at Scania’s battery assembly plant in Södertälje Scania speaks of a “comprehensive update” that the new e-truck family which will be presented for the first time in summer 2022 This concerns first and foremost the heart of the vehicles: they will be given batteries with cells from Northvolt and electric motors in five power levels with 270 The manufacturer puts the range of the batteries which are assembled into packs for the new electric trucks at Scania’s battery assembly plant in Södertälje Scania’s new electric trucks are offered as both trucks and tractors and are available with R-series or S-series cabs but “a 27-tonne city tipper with six batteries can expect a range of up to 350 km between charges,” the manufacturer specifies And: “One hour of charging will then add 270 km of range And it does not take the highest available charge points with 350 kW for achieving reasonable charging times: a 130 kW charger will add 100 km of range in one hour for a truck that uses 1.3 kWh/km.” Since opening the order books in June 2022 the Swedish company managed to “build up a solid order backlog” Production will now commence in Södertälje for trucks with R and S cabs with 400 or 450 kW of engine power sufficient for a broad variety of truck applications,” Scania wrote “With updated urban battery electric vehicles including new green battery packs and e-adopted chassis and services such as Scania Charging Access Scania’s offer has now reached a maturity level that makes it attractive and relevant for a broad spectrum of customers regardless of their transport assignments.” Apart from true long-haul operations most buyers today can find what they need from an operational perspective the new e-trucks feature new EM C1-4 e-motors with a choice of the above-mentioned five power levels with four gears to ensure high flexibility for customers Scania wants to “guide each customer to the exact configuration that fits in terms of number of batteries and power levels” Scania is using cells from Swedish manufacturer Northvolt in the new electric vehicles whose CO2 footprint is said to be only about a third of the cells conventionally used in the industry The manufacturer also cites the charging properties of Northvolt cells as a key strength: “Unlike many other battery packs Scania’s batteries can be repeatedly charged up to 100% of the SoC window without affecting their lifespan which means that they charge almost full at the same rate as when they are almost empty The straight charge curve makes for predictable charge times and the long battery life makes for a low total cost of ownership.” However the company does not name the energy content of the battery packs themselves prnewswire.com, scania.com I agree with the Privacy policy electrive has been following technology It is afternoon recess at school. Children are chatting away in Arabic and Assyrian, a language spoken by the Middle Eastern Assyrian Christian minority, congregating around games and drawing pictures. But their snack gives away that there’s something unusual about this school: the children are having Scandinavian-style open-faced cheese sandwiches, not Middle Eastern food. Elafskolan is the world’s first Assyrian-language school outside the Arab world a Stockholm suburb that has turned into a haven not just for these seventy-six children who’ve fled violence in Syria and Iraq but for thousands of other Middle Eastern Christians as well “We’re getting a lot of new arrivals,” reports Helmut Lavicka “In addition to speaking Arabic and Assyrian considering the trauma they’ve experienced and the fact that many of them haven’t attended school in years.” That’s because they’ve only just arrived in Sweden Ever since the first Assyrian families from Iraq Syria and Turkey—arrived in Södertälje in the 1960s this rather nondescript suburb some forty minutes by commuter train from central Stockholm has been a Middle Eastern hub in the chilly North they settled in Södertälje not because it reminded them of anything from home but because it offered jobs: good factory jobs with Scania escaping persecution that seems mild in comparison with the fate that is currently befalling Christians in the Middle East now lead established middle-class lives; Swedish success stories though they lovingly preserve their ethnic heritage the many elegant villas owned by those original Middle Eastern arrivals bespeak their industriousness they find themselves welcoming a never-ending stream of brothers and sisters from the homeland of Christianity the number of Middle Eastern refugees making their way here has skyrocketed 10,002 of Södertälje’s residents now have Iraqi background Although Swedish law bans registering refugees’ religion unofficial estimates show that the vast majority are Christians of different persuasions a relatively safe community in a country where they make up 10 percent of the population The Islamic State is even holding two Middle Eastern bishops hostage Since he arrived in Södertälje twenty-five years ago Archbishop Julius Shabo of the Assyrian Orthodox Church has seen his Swedish flock quadruple “The majority of people who’ve come here for the past three years have been from Syria and before that from Iraq,” he tells me during a meeting in his office located above the Assyrians’ imposing cathedral here “Middle Eastern people like being close to their families and relatives so that’s why they come to Södertälje.” Swedish law aids the collective voyage to Södertälje by allowing new refugees to settle wherever they like as long as they can show that they have a place to stay even though it means moving into homes that are already crowded Those unable or unwilling to make private arrangements are divided up between municipalities willing to take them with each respective municipality responsible for their housing and welfare Receiving so many new members has left Bishop Julius “The saddest thing is that we’re welcoming them from death,” he explains “People are leaving their homes not because they love this cold country but because they’re afraid of being killed.” That fear brought Shamoun Zitou and his family Aleppo is both Syria’s largest city and home to its largest Christian community “I just have to assume that things will get worse in Syria; otherwise I’ll be disappointed,” he says of his realization that his children will grow up in Sweden “No matter how much my wife and I tell them about it They’ve already forgotten which city they’re from.” Zitou reflects that in Aleppo his children were half-Arab and half-Assyrian: two rather similar cultures “If they grow up to feel half-Assyrian in addition to half-Swedish I’ll feel that we’ve succeeded,” he concludes That’s a big “if.” Södertälje now has so many immigrants that several municipal schools boast only a handful of Swedish pupils that ethnic distribution would not pose a problem but for the fact that without Swedish classmates new arrivals have nobody from whom to learn Swedish are hardly an equivalent source of knowledge both the young immigrants and their parents are facing life as perpetual outsiders in this haven of security I have to leave Södertälje,” acknowledges Zitou so it’s not good that we’re a mini-Middle East here But it’s easier to be with people whose habits and way of life you know.” At tables arranged café-style at the back of Saint Afrem’s Syriac Orthodox Church several dozen men are having coffee and chatting away which has ministered to Sweden’s Assyrians ever since those early Scania years with new arrivals often making their first stop here I meet a nineteen-year-old who fled Syria last year with his two older brothers the eldest deserting from the army (because his parents are still in Syria paid the smugglers and then walked and walked,” he reports Now he attends high school here in Södertälje “Sweden has brought in too many refugees at the same time,” says Afram Yakoub the young chairman of the Assyrian Federation of Sweden “It’s a tragedy for people to have fled from war and misery and be stuck as permanent outsiders here.” At the municipal offices—virtually indistinguishable from local government facilities elsewhere in Europe but for the fact that they offer a host of lectures and presentations on current Middle Eastern politics—Boel Godner governs with social compassion befitting her social democratic ideology she seems withdrawn when I come to see her A national policy intended to make refugees’ experience more humane has created a stampede on her city which—she argues—it can’t handle on its own She wonders why wealthy Stockholm suburbs don’t volunteer to receive Syrians and Iraqis feeling for their lives knowing that Middle Eastern Christian refugees in particular will most likely find an abode in Södertälje That leaves this low-income municipality with a 15 percent unemployment rate among native-born Swedes and a 27 percent unemployment rate among immigrants with huge costs for everything from teachers to interpreters “The most important thing is for the refugees to learn Swedish and to make sure they get a permanent place to live rather than moving around between the homes of friends and family as is currently the case,” Godner argues “If the rest of the country doesn’t want to receive refugees the rest of the country should at least help us help the refugees here in Södertälje.” the crew callously having abandoned their rickety vessel and human cargo as things got tough Instead it has gone out of its way to welcome refugees which means a starring role for Boel Godner’s city Though Södertälje is remarkably peaceful for a city in such transition Middle Eastern scenarios are playing out in unusual ways with Christian pupils at times bullying their Muslim classmates—payback for what brought them here in the first place it’s no secret that Sweden’s newly arrived Christians are apprehensive of increasing Muslim radicalization “When I arrived here you never saw a radical Muslim in Sweden,” reports Bishop Julius “Now you see and hear about them all the time.” That may be an exaggeration Magnus Ranstorp at the Swedish Defense College reports that many Swedish cities don’t even know how to identify—and thus monitor—radical islamist youth recently caused an outcry when he suggested that radicalization among young Muslims in Sweden was the result of pervasive Islamophobia which he advised would best be cured with government funds for more mosques Considering the trauma that Södertälje’s new residents have experienced their new collective life amid the Swedish snow and concrete runs surprisingly smoothly It also adds a distinctive color to this otherwise unremarkable city which in this new incarnation as Aleppo-upon-the-Baltic features no less than four Middle Eastern bishops a multitude of Middle Eastern churches including a new one for Syrian Christians who prefer speaking Arabic over Assyrian The churches also function as community centers with men and women congregating to socialize with their friends we had five parishes in Scandinavia; now we have 22,” the Scandinavian Copts’ Södertälje-based bishop which is located next to the Mayor Godner’s office but gives one the impression of having been transported to Iraq “And we need a lot of new parishes and a lot of new priests.” In fact Bishop Anba—who like his fellow Södertälje bishops cuts an exotic figure in his flowing robes and distinctive onion-shaped headgear—is in the process of identifying young Copts raised in Sweden who would make good priests the recently ordained Father Josef Gobran has his hands full tending to the Södertälje church which is located in the city’s former tax office have understandably left their ancient home the impoverished kingdom now hosts nearly two million refugees Åkesson, a telegenic man who has almost single-handedly turned the far-right Sweden Democrats (SD) into an electable party now presides over a forty-nine-member-strong parliamentary group the Sweden Democrats are so popular that after they caused the fall of the center-left coalition government last December by voting for the center-right opposition’s budget their support leapt by two percentage points compared to the election results the several months earlier there would just be no way around forming a government with them the center-right and center-left parties agreed to disagree agreeing that keeping SD out was the most important item on the agenda continue to resonate with a sizeable minority of Swedes That is Sweden’s dilemma today: a laudable goal that clashes with the desires of many citizens And while many establishment voices passionately support liberal immigration policies they choose not to live in Boel Godner’s city But there’s no doubt that Middle Eastern Christians of all persuasions (and indeed their Muslim compatriots) are enriching this concrete-heavy city Community organizations and businesses such as the Aramaic Democratic Organization and the Syriac Property Company cater to the new population’s needs as do a wide range of Middle Eastern grocery stores and eateries Assyriska and Syrianska (named after their respective religious communities) and the local soccer field is habitually referred to as Jalla Field (Jalla-Valla) in a nod to the Arabic word for “run.” Assyriska’s star player And from a state-of-the-art studio in an office building down the street from Saint Afram’s Syriac Orthodox Cathedral, Suroyo TV the world’s first Assyrian-language TV and satellite station broadcasts news entertainment and chat shows along with updates on the two bishops held hostage by Islamic State to viewers in eighty-two countries Syrian cameraman Sabah Nuri Salo and producer Daniel Haddo “I’m working on my Swedish,” Salo gamely announces Swedish is completely unrelated to his native Assyrian and Arabic having become a geopolitical sage of sorts During a recent visit to a refugee camp in Turkey she discovered that virtually everyone was familiar with Södertälje; indeed “The steady stream from Syria will continue,” she predicts with a stoic look “And the situation in Iraq will escalate.” She’s already trying to figure out where to get money for more teachers Stay in the know with The National Interest newsletter © Copyright 2025 Center for the National Interest We use cookies to enhance your browsing experience We use cookies to help you navigate efficiently and perform certain functions You will find detailed information about all cookies under each consent category below The cookies that are categorised as "Necessary" are stored on your browser as they are essential for enabling the basic functionalities of the site We also use third-party cookies that help us analyse how you use this website and provide the content and advertisements that are relevant to you These cookies will only be stored in your browser with your prior consent You can choose to enable or disable some or all of these cookies but disabling some of them may affect your browsing experience Necessary cookies are required to enable the basic features of this site such as providing secure log-in or adjusting your consent preferences These cookies do not store any personally identifiable data Functional cookies help perform certain functionalities like sharing the content of the website on social media platforms Analytical cookies are used to understand how visitors interact with the website These cookies help provide information on metrics such as the number of visitors Performance cookies are used to understand and analyse the key performance indexes of the website which helps in delivering a better user experience for the visitors Advertisement cookies are used to provide visitors with customised advertisements based on the pages you visited previously and to analyse the effectiveness of the ad campaigns Please enable JS and disable any ad blocker with almost half of them also suspected of involvement in the deaths of a professional football player and his brother Eddie Moussa, a 26-year-old striker at the second division club Assyriska, was gunned down along with his brother Yaacoub at Café Oasen in Södertälje, a card-playing club south of Stockholm last year. Defenceman Otto Leiskanen was the first being loaned to Kalpa Kuopio in the Liiga in Finland And both players are expected to take part in Habs and Laval Rocket training camp Vejdemo played the majority of the 2019-20 regular season in the AHL but had a short stint in the NHL with the Montreal Canadiens He’ll need to fight for a spot in the bottom six out of camp anyway but that fight may be less severe depending on what roster moves are made during the offseason Vejdemo has spent time in the SuperElite league Allsvenskan is second to the Swedish Hockey League in terms of professional sports but it’s still a place for Vejdemo to play NHL players have spent time playing in that league especially teams such as MODO Hockey and Timrå IK Vejdemo will also be joined by fellow NHL prospects Samuel Fagemo of the Los Angeles Kings and Axel Andersson of the Axel Andersson so it’ll be a good place for him to develop for the time being there will depend on whether he can get an NHL spot as well as the status of the AHL Neither league is expected to start for next season until at least December so it makes sense for players such as Vejdemo and Leskinen to find a place to play elsewhere But if the minors can’t get a legitimate plan in place for playing games without fans © 2025 Minute Media - All Rights Reserved The content on this site is for entertainment and educational purposes only Betting and gambling content is intended for individuals 21+ and is based on individual commentators' opinions and not that of Minute Media or its affiliates and related brands All picks and predictions are suggestions only and not a guarantee of success or profit If you or someone you know has a gambling problem crisis counseling and referral services can be accessed by calling 1-800-GAMBLER Vejdemo is now the second Habs player to begin playing hockey in Europe ahead of the new campaign. Assyriska FF fans with tattoos of the Assyrian god Ashur on their arms; Syrianska supporters exposing Syrian Orthodox crucifixes and Syriac script on their bare upper bodies in the hot afternoon sun; a huge flag rolled down over the main terrace portraying a medieval Patriarch; a sword symbolizing the genocide of Assyrians in 1915; and an image of the Ishtar Gate in Babel How can we make sense of the things these fans say Suryoye today have parallel institutions in a wide range of fields including an Assyrian and a Syriac National Association as well as an Assyrian and a Syriac youth organization The Syrian-Orthodox Church has two bishops and two separate churches in Södertälje is the oldest and historically most successful of the two clubs the team has been long established in the Swedish second division It has played one Swedish Cup Final (2003) and played one season in the first division (2005) and has been mostly one step behind Assyriska in its ascension through the Swedish league system in 2008 SFC was promoted to the second division where it now plays together with AFF at a shared stadium both teams had been part of the Assyrian and Syriac societies respectively they have been run independently of other Suryoye organizations and an overwhelming majority of their supporters are also from within the diaspora the clubs have no rules regarding ethnicity and both squads of players today are truly multicultural this non-stable nature of all “national” identity positions becomes even more pronounced in diasporic settings and in particular in a situation such as the one Suryoye live in where there is no pre-determined national narrative relating to a geographically and politically well-defined nation-state “started afresh” in their effort to construct a unified narrative about whom they are and where they come from It is in this context that the name conflict between Syriacs and Assyrians has developed and it is also here that the competing “national” football clubs have to be located in order to be properly understood one Assyrian and one Syriac supporter were typically asked to explain the difference between the two groups If only for a brief period of time at the end of May 2009 football thus managed to make an intra-diasporic debate between opposing perceptions of Suryoye history visible to a nationwide audience this attention from the outside made the tension between the two sides even stronger and it probably contributed to the perception of the derby game not only as a battle between two football teams but also as a clash between two ways of understanding who the Suryoye actually are and should be from various parts of Sweden simultaneously come together to watch a team that they it is probably as important to take into consideration how football names young Suryoye boys as either Syriacs or Assyrians: either you are given a white and red AFF shirt or you dress in yellow and red; either you wave an Assyrian flag symbolizing the two rivers of Mesopotamia is to be interested in football and not stand on any side at all; given the importance of football in many young boys’ lives the chances of ending up in-between are therefore slim Football in Södertälje in general and the Södertälje derby in particular is in other words contested terrain both in words and in action Two versions of a diasporic nationalism - Syriac and Assyrian - are here set against each other on the pitch as well as on the terraces and in the media writing about the game The derby game is thus one of many contests in an ongoing struggle about identity in contrast to other aspects of the “name conflict,” a football match it was Syrianska FC and its supporters who came out on top (1-0) the Syriac version of Suryoye nationalism thus ruled in Södertälje and it was the Syriac national team and the Syriac people who got an opportunity to throw a party with a lot of singing The party was held in a large hall owned by the church used by the Syriacs one of the priests allegedly joined for a period of time and some people even claim that the bells in the church next door were rung as part of the celebrations Suryoye nationalism - and as a consequence Suryoye football - should be separated from religion neither the location of the party nor the involvement of the priest was seen as problematic (no one had heard the church bells) it was considered quite natural to associate the celebrations with the religion because in their Syriac view of what Suryoye nationalism is and should be the people and the Church have always been inseparable - as should Suryoye football [1] North to Another Country: the Formation of a Suryoyo community in Sweden (Stockholm: Department of Social Anthropology “Folkmord och identitet: Assyrier/syrianer och folkmordet under första världskriget,” in Gunner Jag behöver rötter och vingar: om assyrisk/syriansk identitet i Sverige (Skellefteå: Artos & Norma bokförlag [2] ”Assyrier/syrianer - en orientering,” in G [3] [4] religiös och nationell identifikation hos Sveriges assyrier och syrianer (Norrköping a blog about Assyriska FF written about an American and one Australian Articles and match reports were posted regularly up until January of 2010 [6] Imagined Communities: Reflections on the Origin and Spread of Nationalism (London: Verso “Introduction: Inventing Traditions,” in E.J [7] The various articulations of historical narratives at the stadium are good examples of those “commemorative ceremonies” that Paul Connerton identifies as necessary in the construction of collective social memory in How Societies Remember (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press [8] Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity (New York The Middle East Institute (MEI) is an independent, non-partisan, non-for-profit, educational organization. test a wirelessly charged electric-hybrid city bus The bus will start operating on the streets of Södertälje in June 2016 as part of a research project into sustainable vehicle technology Scania is undertaking intensive research into various types of electrification technologies that could replace or complement combustion engines Induction is among the options being investigated and would involve vehicles wirelessly recharging their batteries via electrified roads Scania and the Stockholm based Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) plan to test the technology in real-life conditions The project will be run through their jointly operated Integrated Transport Laboratory research centre Swedish Energy Agency will provide 9.8 MSEK for the project’s realisation Other stakeholders include Södertälje Municipality the tech-oriented museum for children and youths a Scania citybus with an electric hybrid powertrain will go into daily operation in Södertälje in June 2016 At one of the bus stops there will be a charging station where the vehicle will be able to refill wirelessly from the road surface enough energy for a complete journey in just six-seven minutes “The main purpose of the field test is to evaluate the technology in real-life conditions,” says Nils-Gunnar Vågstedt Head of Scania’s Hybrid System Development Department “There is enormous potential in the switch from combustion engines to electrification The field test in Södertälje is the first step towards entirely electrified roads where electric vehicles take up energy from the road surface.” To build an infrastructure and convert bus fleets to vehicles that run exclusively on electricity will provide many advantages for a city the city can save up to 50 million litres of fuel each year This means the fuel costs decrease by up to 90 percent Scania’s research and development department is looking at different technology options including the take-up of energy from overhead electrical wires or from rails “Our customers have different needs and prerequisites when it comes to switching to more sustainable transport Therefore we don’t want focus on just one technology Instead we are continuing research in different areas,” says says Nils-Gunnar Vågstedt The summary reports are more detailed descriptions based on the SWOT analyses made before the summer when opportunities and risks as well as advantages and disadvantages of the move where identified The analyses have been developed by working groups in the School of Industrial Engineering and Management and the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science "This leads to questions that bring the alternatives to a head about how we can best organize and thereby strengthen KTH's education and research for the future," says Mikael Lindström Deputy President who led the review When it comes to the development of KTH's activities in Södertälje Either close down or to make substantial investments to reverse the trend and improve application pressure  "What we know for sure is that we cannot continue as we are," says Mikael Lindström who has visited Kista and Södertälje in recent weeks to collect questions and concerns from staff at the two campuses The in-depth report from the ITM school shows that there are advantages to an integrated environment for education and research on the KTH Campus there is a need to invest in experimental environments learning environments in undergraduate education in order to maintain quality It is unclear how a move might affect the staffing situation This requires a separate analysis of the economic situation  "Having the operations in Kista and Södertälje thoroughly analyzed from all the different perspectives is important and valuable and constitutes a very good basis for preparing the Board’s decision," says Mikael Lindström but here it isa question of moving the operations to KTH Campus or through major investments increasing the use of the Electrum lab and In the in-depth analysis of EECS activities in Kista produced by the working group where it is feared that it will be crowded if all activities students and staff are moved to Valhallavägen and in the final word it says "In the near future KTH Campus Valhallavägen cannot offer an equivalent alternative for continued development while maintaining quality But we are working as quickly as possible based on the well-prepared analyses that have been made and I would like to thank everyone who has participated for a good dialogue," says Mikael Lindström The next step is to present the results of the analyses to the University Board on 4 October KTH's management group will prepare a proposal on which the board can make an decision on 22 November Hera are the new reports
