Inditex's second-largest chain by business volume
has added a new market with its launch in Sweden
The Northern European country is where the Spanish multinational's young fashion chain has just begun operations
It has taken exactly 40 days to materialise one of the main initiatives for its growth and expansion contemplated by Inditex's management for 2025
announced on March 12 that Bershka's upcoming arrival in Sweden was a key strategy for this year
The chain has now confirmed the launch this week
completing it with the opening of Bershka's first store in the Scandinavian country
Bershka's new and first store in Sweden is located inside the Westfield Mall of Scandinavia shopping centre in Solna
one of the municipalities within the metropolitan area of Stockholm
Bershka has begun operating in this region from the physical retail channel
It now occupies one of the commercial spaces in this shopping and leisure complex
located door-to-door with the National Arena stadium
home of the Swedish national football team and host to numerous concerts and mass events
The shopping centre has a strategic position within the Swedish capital's metropolitan area
the young fashion chain can now pit its offerings against a wide list of other prominent fashion operators
which includes brands such as Calvin Klein
it is especially noteworthy that the Swedish multinational H&M Group has a prominent presence in the shopping centre
It has points of sale for both H&M and its beauty line H&M Beauty and its homeware line H&M Home
It is also worth mentioning that Spanish company Inditex already had a remarkable presence within the same shopping centre
from which it had been operating through Massimo Dutti
This first Bershka store in the country now joins these establishments
Looking in more detail at the particularities of this first Bershka store in Sweden
the 640 square metres of commercial space are spread across the single floor of the establishment
on the first floor of the Solna shopping centre
This exhibition space will be reserved for the exhibition and sale of all three of the young fashion firm's collection lines: Bershka
with collections especially aimed at pre-adolescent girls; and Man
Developed under a monolithic-looking volume
formed from the union of the shop's facade
the establishment's design is presented as a large slab of colossal edge
which seems to create the sensation of floating above a void that is reserved for that exhibition surface for the chain's fashion offering
These impressions are enhanced thanks to an interior ceiling that detaches from its perimeter
emphasising the impression of forming a single block with the facade of the commercial premises
This is a sum of gestures that allow the entire space to be stretched to the extreme
thereby causing movements to be redirected from the entrance to the back of the store
the firm's customers who visit this first Bershka store in Sweden will be able to discover the chain's different fashion proposals
arranged around the different environments that have been sought to be created inside
This has been achieved thanks to a very interesting construction of the space from the design of the store's perimeter
These limits have been stretched with projections that mark the transition between the different areas reserved for certain collections
These changes are emphasised with the use of the different selection of materials that have been chosen for the store's design
ceramics and stone-like and textured concrete-like surfaces
With these projections marking not only the rhythm of the spatial transition
but also the visual reference points within the store
thanks to the indiscriminate use of both dynamic screens and monomaterial and monochromatic finishes in wood
the spatial progression of the space ends up leading to that final area of the store
where the till and fitting room area has been arranged
These are next to an area reserved for the exhibition and sale of the chain's beauty offering
their design has been conceived in the form of a self-referential island
arranging around it both an area of assisted tills and self-checkout tills
all in front of a dynamic mural built entirely from screens
with the sole exception of one side that has been reserved for the installation of a point for the collection and return of online orders
This space ends up bringing symmetry to this entire till area
contrasting with the void that is generated in that back part of the store with the access area to the fitting rooms that have been installed behind that mural composed of screens
“The concept of the store has sought to unify the space through a unique ceiling that
gives us a sensation of lightness and focuses our gaze on the important points of the store”
which have been emphasised “with specific elements of colour
or changes of direction in the perimeter furniture that help to understand the change of collections”
the facade has been worked on as a tectonic element generated by vertical stone slats
which due to their repetition and change of direction” generate “a great visual impact”
This surface “is directly related to the horizontal plane generated by the ceiling and the lighting of the store
forcing us to enter and walk through the store to the end”
and following on from what has already been highlighted
is making a final advance on its main growth strategies and initiatives contemplated for this financial year of 2025
the young fashion chain is also expected to arrive in Denmark for the first time
is also expected to open in this new market in 2025
The strategies on the opening of new markets conceived for this year by Inditex are completed with the imminent arrival of Stradivarius in Austria and Oysho in the Netherlands and Germany
as well as with those of all the main fashion chains of the Spanish multinational in Iraq
This is a country in which Inditex will be opening operations for the first time
with the opening of its first points of sale in the country
from the Iraq Mall shopping centre in Baghdad

Ken Sema scored Sweden's third of the game early in the second halfBildbyran / ddp USA / ProfimediaSweden responded well to their disappointing loss to Luxembourg at the weekend by beating Northern Ireland 5-1 in an international friendly at Strawberry Arena in Solna, recording their sixth win in their last eight matches.Manager Jon Dahl Tomasson made seven changes from side that began the toothless display on Saturday
It took just seven minutes for his changes to be vindicated, when one of the players brought in, Emil Holm
applied a finish from inside the six-yard box
But Sweden had one of the men who retained their starting place to thank - Alexander Isak beat the offside trap and drew Northern Irish defenders before selflessly squaring to the unmarked Holm
The visitors grew into the game and had opportunities through Brodie Spencer and Shea Charles
only for the Blagult to deliver a sucker punch just after the 30-minute mark
Gabriel Gudmundsson played a nice one-two on the left with Ken Sema before getting to the byline and fizzing a low ball across goal
Goalkeeper Pierce Charles got down low to deal with it, but could only palm the ball straight to Benjamin Nygren
who tapped his first international goal into an empty net
The third goal arrived just before the hour mark - a free-kick curled into the box was met by Nygren
who saw his strike clatter off the post and back to Ken Sema
He arrowed the rebound through a crowded penalty
The game was done and dusted five minutes later, when Sebastian Nanasi intercepted the ball in the Northern Irish half
who opened up his body and rifled the ball home from 25 yards
Tomasson brought on Niclas Eliasson and Anthony Elanga for the final 20 minutes
and they took little time to make their impact
Elanga arrived at the back post to cushion in Eliasson's curling cross for 5-0
Five nearly became six late on, when Besfort Zeneli struck a 20-yard first-time strike against the crossbar
Zeneli did play his part in goal number six, but only to deflect Isaac Price's strike past goalkeeper Viktor Johansson as the visitors grabbed a consolation in the last minute to make it 5-1
Next up for Sweden is another friendly against Hungary in June, before beginning their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign against Slovenia in September

STOCKHOLM (AP) — A suspected gas leak at the headquarters of Sweden’s security agency Friday forced authorities to evacuate some 500 people from the facility
Seven people from the headquarters in Solna
police spokesperson Anders Bryngelsson told the TT news agency
He said there were no reports that anyone was seriously injured
Emergency services had decided to evacuate the entire building because of a “suspected gas leak,” Bryngelsson said
The evacuation “involves several hundred people
The people admitted to the hospital had breathing problems
Some of them were officers who smelled gas when they arrived at the scene
Images shared from the scene showed first responders and police officers wearing gas masks

Veidekke has been commissioned to build 244 apartments and non-domestic premises in Råsunda near Stockholm for the city of Solna’s public housing foundation
a design-and-build contract with a contract value of SEK 609.5 million
The Bollen block in Råsunda is under development under the auspices of Signalisten
the city of Solna’s public housing foundation
Veidekke has now been commissioned to build a residential block that will comprise 244 rental apartments
of which six residences adapted to special needs
as well as premises for a new health center.
“We look forward to working with Veidekke to develop the Bollen block into an attractive and sustainable section of Solna
This project signals the start of an expansion phase and a high pace in residential construction,” says Lars Jolérus
The project is being implemented as a design-and-build contract

while a five-story building will be preserved
will move into new premises in one of the buildings
Varying in size from one to five rooms plus kitchen
the apartments are designed to appeal to a wide range of target groups
Plans include a large garage and two new shelters below ground
The energy supply will incorporate solar panels
The new buildings will be certified in line with the Miljöbyggnad Silver environmental standard
“We are looking forward to building more rental apartments in a “new” Råsunda neighborhood
we are excited to be able to start construction of a large
high-quality rental project,” says Linus Wåhlin at Veidekke Construction Sweden
presenting such challenges as high groundwater levels and a metro network under parts of the construction site
working businesses and traffic must be taken into account
The project is scheduled for completion in spring 2029
The contract is included in the Q1 2025 order book
Veidekke is one of Scandinavia's largest contractors
In addition to undertaking all types of building and civil engineering assignments
the group also maintains roads and produces asphalt and aggregates
Veidekke emphasises stakeholder involvement and local experience
Its annual turnover is approximately NOK 43 billion
and half of its 8,000 employees own shares in the company
Veidekke is listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange
and has posted a profit every year since its inception in 1936
The opening was attended by about 150 people
including representatives of the diplomatic corps
acquaintances and relatives of the creator of the exhibition
We also had the honour of hosting Izaak Celnikier's family
who came to Warsaw especially for this event
led by the head of the Cultural Projects and Communication Department
began with the speech of the director of the Jewish Historical Institute
as well as the partner and media patrons of the exhibition
the institutions that lent works for the exhibition
many thanks to curator Zuzanna Benesz-Goldfinger
for such steadfast work in getting to know and examining the work of Izaak Celnikier"
"This is an important and groundbreaking exhibition
It is worth emphasizing that most of the collection comes from the Jewish Historical Institute."
Zuzanna Benesz-Goldfinger began her speech by recalling a very significant fragment of Izaak Celnikier's unpublished autobiography entitled My Reading of Rembrandt:
their features are specific or almost specific
My language is hesistating – it is the language of salvation's debtor
The curator talked about the purpose of the exhibition
devoted primarily to works created by the artist before his leaving for Paris in 1957:
"The works that Celnikier left in Poland were dispersed
The aim of this exhibition and the publication that comes along was to connect all of those works and to recognise the true aim of their creation
It turned out that most of them were sketches for Yiddish stories and poems
thanks to the cooperation and support of wonderful Yiddishists
into Polish and English – and thanks to that we can read the real sense of the illustrations by Celnikier."
She also presented the compositional assumptions of the exhibition:
"It is no coincidence that at this exhibition two axes cross: the scenography one and the narrative one
One axis is designated by representations of war: a projection with two versions of the »Ghetto« painting is reflected in a painting entitled »Korea«
you can see hanging boards with post-war sketches and illustrations for Yiddish stories and poems
They're filled with sentiments of pacifism and antifascism
is where we present the pre-war and war biography of the artist through the presentation of his graphics combined with quotes from the autobiography of Isaac Celnikier."
We also had the pleasure of listening to Anne Szulmajster-Celnikier
who emphasized how important this exhibition is to the Celnikier family:
in my name and in the name of Isaac's children
and in the name of one of his grand-children
my gratitude to the director of the Museum
and of course to the whole staff who worked hard for this marking event
My gratitude goes in particular to Mrs Zuzanna Benesz-Goldfinger who intensively collaborated with me twice in Paris
We cordially invite you to visit the exhibition to see how important and touching it is. We invite you also to buy the catalogue of the exhibition which is available in our bookstore
The next major project in Arenastaden in Solna is now starting
with Dalvägen being transformed into a vibrant city street with thousands of new workplaces
cafés and the entrance to the new Arenastaden metro station
The project has started with major circular efforts
involving older existing buildings being dismantled and the demolished materials being reused or recycled
The initial investments include the dismantling of existing buildings and the moving of the roadway to enable Dalvägen to be made into a modern mixed-use urban street. Future investment in the construction of new office buildings and housing are dependent on market conditions and the signing of lease agreements with key tenants
“The most likely scenario is that we will start building the offices located closest to the commuter train station and next to the future metro station
That is also the site of the first property that is being dismantled
But interest and the market will determine which one is built first,” says Johan Zachrisson
there are more than 30,000 workplaces and 3,000 residents in Arenastaden
and 15 million people pass through every year
Fabege is now continuing Arenastaden's development opposite the new metro station (which will open in 2028) by adding office blocks
service outlets and restaurants on the ground floors
cyclists and public transport will be given priority as cars and other road traffic are diverted to pass alongside the railway line
works in and visits Arenastaden can easily travel there sustainably by metro
The development of Dalvägen will strengthen the southern entrance to Arenastaden
Instead of the current 30,000 square metres GFA of office space on Dalvägen
a total of 100,000 square metres GFA of office space is planned in the new buildings
through its wholly-owned subsidiary Birger Bostad
will add around 700 new residential properties along Dalvägen
The aim is to have some of the new office buildings and residential blocks ready for the opening of the new Arenastaden metro station

Using innovative reuse and recycling measures
Fabege is working to create circular flows
door frameworks and glass sections have been dismantled and stored in Fabege's Reuse Hub
windows and the façade surface layer are also utilised for reuse
Materials that cannot be reused are sent back to the manufacturers to be transformed into new building materials
“The goal is that at least 80% of the materials in the existing buildings will be reused or used as recycled raw materials to make new materials,” says Mia Häggström

It is called the flagship of Swedish health care: the modern, new university hospital New Karolinska Solna. But, according to an investigation by Swedish TV program “Uppdrag granskning” (Mission: Investigation)
is one of the most expensive projects in Sweden
But the project has received mixed reviews since 2010
when Swedish authorities gave a single bidder the contract in a public-private partnership (PPP) – not only to build the hospital but also account for the financing and maintenance for decades to come
“We know to the single Crown what this will cost
This project bears close examination,” said Torbjorn Rosdahl
leading politician for the Conservative party ordering the NKS-hospital
What the politicians in the Stockholm county did not know
was how the company Swedish Hospital Partners (SHP)
owned by Swedish construction giant Skanska and British investment company Innisfree
had created business structures using subsidiaries in Luxembourg that would lead to drastically-reduced tax bills in Sweden

the Stockholm subway represents a landmark of art in public spaces
The first line of the first line open in 1950 and today
the extensive network of underground tunnels carries more than 1 million passengers every day to home or work or somewhere in between
these daily journeys become all the more meaningful and acculturate for anyone roaming the Stockholm subway
Here are 6 stations to prove that Stockholm’s subway system might be the world’s largest public art gallery
T-Centralen acts as the main hub of Stockholm’s subway
The blue station represents quite appropriately the main hub of the blue line
opened up for traffic in 1975 becoming the first station to feature artwork and begining the city’s underground art network
roughly translated to “King’s Garden” lies under a royal historical area rich in history and not only
The station is a case study for historians or artists
but also of interest for biologists as the underground tunnel developed its own and unique fauna and flora with very particular animal and fungi species
Located under the Stockholm Court House from where the station got its name
the Rådhuset subway platform creates a surreal contrast between the raw and organic cave aesthetics with a strong
structural and imponent architecture feature as the column
The station below the KTH Royal Institute of Technology opened in 1973 with artwork by award-winning artist Lennart Mörk
The station is a celebration to some of history’s greatest thinkers such as Plato
Newton and their contributions to science and the fascinating history of the pursuit of knowledge
Nicknamed “the gates of hell”, Solna centrum is one of Stockholm subway’s most visual striking stations due to the intense orange-red ceiling and meticulous details like trees and little houses
Tensta is a suburb of Stockholm where many people moving into the city found residence in the 70’s
The station exhibits messages of welcoming
and love looking like a pre-history man cave full of rupestrian art

which is part of Nordic Choice Hotels’ Comfort Hotel chain with 336 rooms and 88 long-stay apartments
houses Nordic Choice Hotels’ Swedish headquarters and was inaugurated in June 2021
- “It’s been a fantastic journey to realise the vision of a zero-energy hotel along with Choice Hotels
and we’re obviously delighted with this award from the City of Solna
The key to our success has been that all parties in the project have been committed from day one and wanted to break new ground to achieve ambitious goals,” says Maria Jansson
The City of Solna justifies its decision to give the Environmental Award to Fabege and Choice Hotels as follows:
“This year’s award winners have together created Scandinavia’s most energy-efficient hotel building
passive house technology and geothermal energy
it is Scandinavia’s first zero-energy hotel
With its 2,400 square metres of solar cells
it is the hotel with biggest concentration of solar panels in the world
with solar energy fully covering its annual consumption of electricity
the energy is used intelligently inside the property
with the ability to distribute heat from one part of the operation to the rest of the building
Through intelligent and innovative buildings
the winners have led the way in climate-smart and sustainable construction
It is not only a great initiative for the climate
but also sets an example and provides a key source of inspiration for all other actors building environmentally conscious and innovative buildings for the future.”
Solna Business Park is now getting a colourful addition in the form of a new park
The aim with this is to highlight Agenda 2030 and the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals and make them accessible to everyone
the park will contribute to there being more activity between the buildings and make Solna Business Park a new destination to visit
the Danish architectural firm that has attracted worldwide attention with its unique and spectacular projects
Fabege has developed a master plan and a development idea for Solna Business Park
with a concept based on the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals
This will contribute to a more active and vibrant street environment in which people are given more space
– “We want to give both children and adults of all ages an experience with focus on playing and learning as well as an opportunity to get acquainted with the sustainability goals in a concrete and fun way
We are very pleased that a private operator shows the way both when it comes to developing a district with a high level of ambition and when it comes to setting a sustainable agenda,” says David Zahle
Partner and Architect at BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group
193 countries around the world have adopted the UN’s Agenda 2030
which is the most ambitious sustainable development agenda ever
It defines 17 global sustainable development goals that aim to eradicate poverty and hunger
achieve gender equality and ensure lasting protection for our planet and natural resources
This places high demands on the construction and real estate sectors
and at Fabege many of the global goals are now integral elements of our business activities
– “We are thus well aware that we need to work hard and remain focused regarding those areas in which we have the greatest opportunities to contribute towards sustainable development
and achieving the global goals forms a major part of our daily work
But everyone has to contribute to achieving these goals
and with the new park we hope to raise awareness and knowledge about the important work that needs to be done,” says Susanna Elvsén
Market Area Manager Solna Business Park at Fabege
The design has various elements and installations that support and provide information in different ways about all 17 global goals
which provide an interpretation of the goals that is applicable to both children and adults
no matter how limited control they have over their lifestyles
– “The Agenda 2030 for sustainable development
are to be implemented primarily by countries and so far the focus has been on actions taken by governments
This was the question when we developed The Good Life Goals
Visitors can get inspiration in the park and find out in a creative way what they can do,” says Andrea Norgren
co-lead One Planet Sustainable Lifestyles and Education Programme
Solna Business Park is facing major changes
and the Parkhuset initiative – the innovation project that aims to cut the climate impact in half – will also be started
The area is one of Fabege’s priority city district projects and will be transformed into a new attractive area for both businesses and residents in the coming years
The new park is expected to open in August 2021 and will be a destination for people who want to stay for a short or a longer time

Stallmästaregården began its life as a somewhat rural stablemaster’s farm
that she wanted to host her midsummer festivities here
at which point the stablemaster rapidly transformed the farm into an inn
Stallmästaregården feels like a rural retreat
flanked as it is by the expansive Royal Haga Park and scenic Brunnsviken Bay
A painstaking restoration and redesign has left the onetime farm still rustic and homey
while simultaneously infusing it with healthy doses of both midcentury and contemporary Scandinavian design
an unpretentiously stylish destination that serves gourmet Swedish cuisine to discerning locals and out-of-towners against a picturesque natural backdrop
But the best part comes when everyone goes home and the inn is left to the guests

Fabege is acquiring land to create approximately 52,000 sqm of office space and approximately 10,000 sqm of housing
The purchase price for the land is approximately SEK 900m
which will be paid to the city of Solna as the new urban districts are built
The construction start for the expansion of the Mälarbanan is planned for 2023 and the new buildings are expected to be built between 2030 and 2040
“The development of central Huvudsta is by far Solna’s largest and most complex urban development project
as the railway will be put underground and lined with new buildings
It therefore feels good that we are working with two companies that have extensive experience of urban development in complex metropolitan environments,” says Pehr Granfalk
Chairman of the Municipal Executive Board in Solna
The Municipal Executive Board in Solna is expected to approve the agreement on 29 March 2021
The proposed local development plan will have its consultation phase in spring 2021
“Along with our current development of Arenastaden
the land acquisition is a natural addition that contributes to new value-creating opportunities in Solna in a long-term perspective
The geographical location and Solna’s many advantages mean that we are keen to increase our portfolio in the area,” says Stefan Dahlbo
The urban development will reduce the barrier currently formed by the railway
as new buildings will link the districts of Huvudsta and Skytteholm together with central Solna
public transport accessibility will be improved in the area as a result of a new commuter train station in Huvudsta and a new station entrance in Solna Business Park for Sundbyberg station

“We needed new premises that could evolve together with our growing business
we were looking for a flexible solution that would allow our employees to work and have meetings in different locations around Stockholm
And we certainly get that with Fabege’s solution,” says Leif Alama
Solna Business Park has an excellent location between two popular and expansive municipalities – Solna and Sundbyberg
The area has undergone extensive development in recent years
including having more frequent and more varied local traffic
It has also become one of the areas with the most solar panels in Sweden
This development work is now being stepped up even further
as well as better pedestrian routes and parks
“We have worked hard and in a targeted way with CGI to design the optimal solution for its needs
and the result is two offices rather than one
It has been an exciting and very enjoyable assignment that has now resulted in us adding another strong brand to our areas,” says Andreas Malmsäter
Västra Kungsholmen is an area that is continuing to develop at a rapid pace and is one of the last major area of expansion in central Stockholm
and its immediate proximity to Östra Kungsholmen’s Stenstaden district
contribute to its popularity for both businesses and residents
The property Glädjen 12 has recently been renovated and modernised
Fabege is one of the largest commercial property owners in central Stockholm and by far the largest in Solna Business Park
Sweden-based property management and construction company Fabege and multinational construction and development company Skanska Sweden are acquiring around 150,000 m2 of land in Solna
as potential for urban development has opened up in the area
The real estate potential is the result of the expansion of the Mälarbanan railway line
There is now scope for 1,000 new homes and 2,000 new jobs emerging next to Solna Business Park and nearby Huvudsta
Fabege’s land acquisition will create around 10,000 m2 of housing and around 52,000 m2 of office space
The estimated land purchase price $105m will be paid to the city of Solna when the new developments occur
the new buildings are expected to be constructed between 2030 and 2040

“Minor Remnants from Solna Street…” is an exhibition devoted to the post-war
a great Jewish artist who survived the Holocaust
the exhibition will feature works created immediately after the war – cartoon illustrations to stories by Awrom Rejzen and poems by Dawid Sfard.
Izaak Celnikier was born in Warsaw in 1923
he lived in the Janusz Korczak Orphan Home
and from 1941 he lived in the local ghetto
Izaak Celnikier went through the German camps in Stutthof
and in 1957 he went on a scholarship to Paris
where he lived and worked until the end of his life
Isaac Celnikier began working with the “Idisz Buch” publishing house
He created illustrations for Yiddish publications: Oysgeveylte verk (Selected Works) by Abraham Reisen
and Lider (Poems) by Dovid Sfard – publications so far untranslated into Polish
which Celnikier never saw in their final publication because they were published after he left Poland
contain coded content relating the viewer to the artist's biography
The drawings thus create a parallel narrative to the text they illustrate
Celnikier projected his personal experience of the Holocaust onto Rejzen's stories from earlier times
while he interpreted some stories as prefigurations of the Holocaust and gave expression to this in the illustrations he created
The exhibition will attempt to read Celnikier's biography in illustrations of Yiddish stories and poems
can be read as sketches for large-format paintings already created in France
and referring to a single original – images from the ghetto fixed in the artist's memory

Karolinska University Hospital began commissioning of the new hospital building in Solna
The final move on 28th October represents the last in the plan for 2018 and marks the full commissioning of the new hospital building
Cooperation between the hospitals in Stockholm has been a key factor in successfully completing the entire move project - one of the largest in the history of Stockhoms county council
and have now been relocated to their new rooms
Today’s move means that the new hospital building is now fully in use
Some units will however remain located in the old hospital building for a period of time
several of Karolinska's day and outpatient units for adults and children are located at another building in the hospital area
"I am extremely pleased that our patients now have access to this new and modern building
where they receive care in single rooms and where all the competences our patients need are gathered in one building"
"I would like to thank all the staff at our site in Solna who have planned and worked with the move
but also staff at our site in Huddinge and the other hospitals who are supporting us with the care of extra patients during the move in Solna"
The new hospital building at Karolinska is part of the restructuring of healthcare in Stockholm
The revised structure addresses the healthcare needs for an increasing population
where the most highly specialized care will be provided at Karolinska in Solna
an increased number of operating rooms and space for two helicopters are examples of improvements that will fulfill future needs for advanced healthcare
Karolinska is one of Europe's largest university hospitals and together with Karolinska Institutet we have a leading role within the field of medical breakthroughs. Our aim is to always put the patient first by providing the best possible medical expertise
Through innovation and active collaboration with industry and academia
we are committed to being internationally prominent in medicine
Sweden's world-famous Karolinska University Hospital (KUH) is preparing to test its new RIS/PACS this summer
ahead of rolling it out across the rebuilt institution in summer 2016
The powerful new RIS/PACS managed service is one of the main technological features of the project that is designed to radically improve workflow in radiology and other departments
in line with similar revamping taking place in hospitals across other regions
The mammoth rebuilding of KUH will scythe imaging modalities at the Solna campus in the north of Stockholm
a new strategy of greater specialization at the new Karolinska will lead to a dramatic increase in radiology patient throughput
according to head of diagnostic radiology and business solution owner Dr. Anders Wennerberg
the Karolinska's Solna campus will have fully transitioned to become a leading center for highly specialized healthcare in six main areas yet to be confirmed
Patients with routine diseases such as pneumonia or appendicitis will be directed to other regional centers
While this will mean that overall patient numbers should decrease
the imaging services will undergo an increase in its workload as highly specialized medicine requires frequent use of highly specialized imaging
The 1,700-bed KUH last year had 1.5 million patient visits
admitted 108,000 patients for hospital stay
and its radiology staff across four radiology departments performed 360,000 exams
imaging exams at KUH will have increased to a total of 500,000
With such a spike in specialization and throughput
the need for a powerful RIS/PACS and other IT and telecommunications systems has become paramount to both successful implementation of the new radiology service and to the functioning of the entire rebuild
PACS developer Sectra built the RIS/PACS
which has taken 2.5 years to procure owing to the complexity of the hospital's requirements
"The new RIS/PACS will be a tremendous improvement in terms of speed
"Two geographically separated but synchronized data centers will provide state-of-the-art performance
the entire workload of Karolinska's imaging services can be supported by one of the data centers."
Vital to success was the region-wide decision to separately procure a vendor neutral archive (VNA) based on open standard Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) Cross-Enterprise Document Sharing (XDS) architecture
which will serve to house all radiological data in Stockholm -- not just images
The VNA will serve a population of 2 million
around one-fifth of the Swedish population
"The decision to go for a centralized vendor neutral archive solution was taken by the diagnostic imaging and IT departments and the Stockholm county council
KUH will be the first major hospital to fully use the VNA next year
the first implementation will be in mammography in Stockholm," Wennerberg told AuntMinnieEurope.com
He is confident that the imaging service will be unbroken between now and implementation of the new RIS and the new PACS in summer 2016
the changes will be immediately noticeable
and built-in advanced visualization features
A major challenge to establishing the new RIS/PACS-service concerns integration
because a large number of dependent systems including the electronic health record (EHR)
and third party advanced visualization software need to be integrated into the RIS and/or PACS in various ways
there is much to gain by smart integration," Wennerberg said
adding that an integration project was already underway
"The most essential systems will be integrated at go-live in the summer of 2016
but less critical ones to be added later."
the new KUH structure comprises a new building on the existing site
with some of the old buildings kept for research
the Huddinge campus will also be extended in a couple of years' time with a new building
but the radiology department at Huddinge will probably be entirely moved into the new block
responsibility for the New Karolinska Solna (NKS) project has been shared by the County Council Executive Board (LSF) and Karolinska University Hospital
The project represents a Public Private Partnership agreement between Stockholm County Council and the project company Swedish Hospital Partners
The next phase in the development of Arenastaden
The local development plan for the Cairo and Farao blocks
contains about 185 homes and about 77,000 sqm of GFA
equating to about 65,000 sqm of office space
all linked by vibrant and green urban spaces
Arenastaden currently provides 30,000 workplaces and is home to about 5,000 residents
with the addition of new office and residential blocks
further housing and a ground floor featuring shops and services opposite the future metro entrance
Road traffic will be directed along the area by the railway tracks
which will become a primarily pedestrianised street as a result of this development
- “Arenastaden is a very attractive area and we are only halfway through its urban development
We will put people at the heart of the development of the new city blocks
by filling the best location in Arenastaden with restaurants
housing and offices,” says Charlotte Liliegren
Head of Urban and Property Development at Fabege
Arenastaden is currently one of the places in Sweden with the highest proportion of sustainable travel
Around 80 percent of the people who work in the area travel in a climate-smart way
The green line of the metro will serve Arenastaden
The presence of the metro will strengthen Solna Station as a hub and further connect northern and southern Stockholm
- “Continuing to develop a vibrant urban environment in Solna is an important part of our long-term efforts to create a more sustainable municipality
It is great that the local development plan has now come into force
as this will make it possible for even more people to live and work in Arenastaden,” says Martin Eliasson
