May 4, 2025 3:58 PM EDTHolly Madison rose to fame as Hugh Hefner’s girlfriend—well, one of them—on the E! reality series The Girls Next Door, which ran for six seasons beginning in 2005. Now she’s pulling back the curtain on the reality of her relationship with the Playboy publisher and it’s not all movie nights and theme parties In an exclusive video interview with the New York Post Madison is telling a much darker story about the notorious ladies man “I just didn’t know him well,” Madison admitted despite having dated him for seven years between 2001 and 2008 “I had this mindset of being in love,” she added “and it was kind of tinged with a little bit of Stockholm syndrome.” when really I was just somebody who had trouble connecting with people my whole life,” Madison “And I’d met somebody who was like a master manipulator.” Unlike most romantic relationships, Madison has the ability to go back and look at it from the outside—not just from the hundreds of paparazzi photos that exist from their courtship, but from the five years she spent filming a TV show alongside Hef’s other main squeezes, Bridget Marquardt and Kendra Wilkinson Madison was 26 years old while Hefner was 79 “I look back and I just see somebody who was young and impressionable and just kind of in a fog almost,” Madison told the Post In 2022, Marquardt—Madison’s The Girls Next Door co-star—spoke out about how she felt “pressure” to sleep with the Playboy founder “I was thinking I could get out of this a little while,” she said of being intimate with Hef I’m not going to do anything I don’t want to do.’” Though she added that “It’s not like I never would have done that with him but I wasn’t ready in the moment.” When Madison, who in 2023 shared that she had been diagnosed with high-functioning autism, was pressed on the “fog” she described and whether it could be related to her autism, she said no. “I think the fog was more just having such a warped mindset,” she noted, describing it as “Cognitive dissonance. Thinking I’m in love with somebody, and realizing I got in way over my head and made a bad decision—but always trying to justify that. Or trying to say, ‘Okay, well, I’m here [at the Playboy Mansion], and it’s affected this part of my life. It’s affected my reputation. How do I make it okay?’” While Madison still seems to be processing her relationship with Hef, she is still very much associated with the Playboy brand. She currently hosts a true crime series for ID called The Playboy Murders, which looks back at various crimes with links to Hefner and those in the Playboy orbit. The Playboy Murders’ third season kicks off on Monday at 9 p.m. By Jennifer M Chelsea vs Djurgarden Prediction, Preview & Betting Tips08/05 19:00Chelsea CHE formArrow DownDIF formArrow DownH2HArrow DownLiam Bewsher | ELIGIBILITY RESTRICTIONS AND FURTHER T&CS APPLY Chelsea enter their home clash with Djurgarden as firm favourites as they have a superior squad on top of the fact that they thrashed the Swedish Allsvenskan outfit 4-1 in the first leg of this tie The Blues have won ten of their 11 matches in the UEFA Europa Conference League they have scored 19 times in their five fixtures meaning that we can expect a landslide victory here Enzo Maresca’s men have won all of their last four matches since their quarter-final tie with Legia Warsaw including a superb 3-1 home win over Premier League champions Liverpool last time out Djurgarden enters this game with just one win from their last four matches and have suffered three defeats from their last five games in the Europa Conference League Chelsea takes on Djurgarden in the second-leg of their UEFA Europa Conference League semi-final tie with the Blues expecting to advance in a comfortable fashion Chelsea comfortably beat Djurgarden in the first leg of this tie as won 4-1 thanks to goals by Jadon Sancho Noni Madueke and Nicolas Jackson (2) while Isak Alemayehu scored a consolation goal for the Swedish outfit The Blues have significantly enhanced their chances of qualifying for next season’s Champions League of late as they have managed vital victories over the likes of Fulham as they now sit fifth-place on 63 points from 35 matches with a better goal difference than the City Ground club Maresca will be desperate to see his side win the UEFA Europa Conference League having earned 18 points from six Group Stage matches before beating FC Copenhagen (3-1) and Legia Warsaw (4-2) in the run-up to this tie Djurgarden’s league season has just started as they have played just six matches in the 2025 edition of the Swedish Allsvenskan The visitors have had a slow start to their campaign as they have earned just eight points from six matches Djurgarden actually managed to finish fifth in the Europa Conference League Group Stage having accumulated 13 points from six games Djurgarden have managed to advance past Pafos (3-1) and Rapid Vienna (4-2) Chelsea versus Djurgarden will be broadcast live on TNT Sports 3 Christopher Nkunku and Marc Guiu are Chelsea’s only injury absentees for this match Patric Aslund and Nino Zugelj are all set to be absent from Djurgarden’s trip to London due to injury Chelsea enters this game in good form since advancing past Legia Warsaw in the quarter-finals of this competition Enzo Maresca’s men earned a late win over Fulham as Pedro Neto fired in a 93rd-minute winner at Craven Cottage they have gone on to beat Everton (1-0) and Liverpool (3-1) with Enzo Fernández and Cole Palmer scoring on either side of a Jarrel Quansah own goal against the latter mentioned opponents In-between their wins over each Merseyside club the Blues earned a comfortable 4-1 win over Djurgarden The visitors have won just one of their last four matches since advancing past Rapid Vienna via a 4-2 aggregate scoreline having drawn with GAIS (0-0) and AIK (1-1) on either side of a 1-0 win over Oster and a 4-1 defeat to Chelsea Find More Predictions & Tips hereThroughout the 2024/25 season, you can find our Prediction content here, with expert analysis via our team at Footy Accumulators. Ola Wihlborg that comes in four colors making a statement with or without the matching ottoman “I wanted to create a high-quality sofa that maintains its shape and looks the same even after you stand up from sitting in it,” says Wihlborg “Something that prioritizes comfort without needing extra pillows.” After more than 30 prototypes the final design exhibits a refined sense of style emblematic of the STOCKHOLM iterations of the past whimsical color-blocked throw pillows dot the sofa a felted wool look adding to the personality of the collection Handmade details are more and more prevalent in recent years The second new sofa comes from Nike Karlsson featuring a solid pine wood frame topped with cozy white cushions The timeless design is made using natural materials in the for of woven fabric This allowed us to lean into the Scandinavian materials including working with a Swedish pine supplier to source the highest-quality pine People often think of pine as a budget material but when you go for the best and apply smart Rounding out the collection with more natural influences elegant casing and a beautiful transition between the panels Rattan can also be found as the backrest of one of the dining chairs as well as a lounge chair with a rattan frame Nature flows through the textile work of designer Paulin Machado whose forest-inspired motifs add narrative depth to everyday items Lampshades bloom with leaves and mushrooms in palettes drawn straight from the Swedish landscape – greens echo the birch trees of the north in colorways ranging from deep forest green to stark black-and-white Merino wool blankets and pillowcases in multi-hued patterns punctuate the collection with warmth and vibrance Ceramic and porcelain tableware in glazed stone finishes bring subtle texture to the table while a curated glassware range keeps things minimal and elegant The vases – two mouth-blown and one in bold black ceramic – serve as sculptural statements creating precedents for The designs are keeping with the brand’s signature Scandi aesthetic, but with a twist: inspiration from the natural world. The collection is now available in stores and on the Ikea website At the core of the collection is a thoughtful focus on materials Solid wood is paired with tactile surfaces and natural fibers like mouth-blown glass and rattan to create a variety of pieces The designers selected these materials not just for their beauty but for how they age and interact over time “The purpose of the Stockholm collections has always been to prove that high quality doesn’t need to come at an intimidating cost,” says Karin Gustavsson, creative leader for Stockholm, in a press release where traditional techniques and hands-on methods have resulted in durable and beautiful design pieces that stands the test of time.” and Paulin Machado developed the collection which was deeply rooted in its namesake city of Stockholm Two noticeably different sofas serve as the foundational centerpieces of Ikea’s Stockholm 2025 collection. One of them is a wide modular sofa that was designed by Wihlborg and is available in four colors His frustration with sofas that constantly require cushion fluffing sparked the design concept “I wanted to create a high-quality sofa that maintains its shape and looks the same even after you stand up from sitting in it Something that prioritizes comfort without needing extra pillows,” he explains After developing more than 30 prototypes to refine the balance between structure and softness Its modular design allows each piece to stand alone or be connected to fit a variety of spaces and lifestyles Karlsson took a different route with his creation. His sofa constructed with a solid pine wood frame and soft white cushions embraces a foam-free design made entirely from natural materials Nature was the main source of inspiration for textile designer Paulin Machado’s pieces. The collection’s lampshades have delicate leaf and mushroom motifs and color palettes drawn from the shifting tones of Scandinavian seasons The handwoven wool rugs in earthy greens or minimalist black-and-white echo birch tree patterns “Nature is the best designer—every colour matches beautifully in the natural world,” Machado says the Swedish furniture maker brings the outdoors in The final deadline for Fast Company’s Brands That Matter Awards is Friday, May 30, at 11:59 p.m. PT. The Swedish hosts introduced the first Olympic use of automatic timing devices for the track events, the photo finish and a public address system. If there was an unofficial theme of the 1912 Games, it was endurance. The course for the cycling road race was 320km (199 miles), the longest race of any kind in Olympic history. In Greco-Roman wrestling, the middleweight semi-final match between Russian Martin Klein and Finland’s Alfred Asikainen lasted 11 hours. For the first time, competitors in the Games came from all five continents. It was also the first time Japan participated. The modern pentathlon, women’s swimming and women’s diving all made their Olympic debuts. Under the nom de plume of Georges Hohrod and M. Eschbach, Baron de Coubertin was awarded first place for his "Ode to sport" which "praises sport in both a literary and sporting way". (Illustration: "Les sports d'hiver" of Carlo Pelligrini, winner of the painting competition of the Concours d’Art.) With the close of the 1912 Olympics, all eyes turned towards the city of Berlin where the next edition of the Games was scheduled to take place. Although World War I made it impossible for plans to proceed, the Games proved their resilience. The 1916 celebration remained in Olympic history as the Games of the VI Olympiad, and in 1920, the Olympics were once again held, with the Belgian city of Antwerp acting as Olympic host. Traffic Office conducted a general assessment of street traffic in the Swedish capital in 2001 it came to the shocking conclusion that two-thirds of all trees in the city center were dead or dying City authorities agreed that an urgent response was needed to nurse these leafy urban ecosystem pillars back to health various technologies and materials were tested in an attempt to create a more suitable living space for trees in the urban environment “I knew that they could grow if the circumstances were right,” says Embrén The root of the problem was the fact that many trees in Stockholm were planted in the 19th century the streets were comparatively underdeveloped so the trees could grow relatively freely in the space underground But as Stockholm has developed over the decades its streets have been increasingly paved over with concrete internet and beyond — have been laid underneath them the roots of the trees have often been damaged through disruptive building works and due to the lack of space and impermeable concrete they have also been starved of oxygen and water “It’s like putting a plastic bag over your head and tightening it over your neck,” says Embrén “That’s what happened to the trees in Stockholm inspired by railroad embankments — which require only a small amount of organic matter for healthy trees to grow — Embrén concocted what was to become known as the “Stockholm tree pit” model The design involves digging a pit and constructing a frame underground around the tree’s roots, and then filling said pit with a mixture of soil and stone, sometimes including biochar These permeable layers are very strong and physically adaptable but also allow stormwater to flow in meaning the trees are provided with sufficient air and water naturally They also allow rainwater to be soaked up — a necessity amid more extreme weather brought on by climate change “We found that the more breathable the materials we used Proponents say the method has a number of benefits, including the fact that pits can be installed around existing trees, they can bear the weight of heavy-vehicle traffic, they require little topsoil — a resource that is becoming scarce — and they need less watering than traditionally-planted trees which allows tree roots to thrive beneath hard surfacing ergo allowing healthy trees to grow within the modern built environment is particularly relevant as cities attempt to re-green and reforest in the face of climate change According to the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe urban forests can help “future-proof” cities which are responsible for about 75 percent of global CO2 emissions and mitigating risks of floods and landslides “It’s more important now than ever before,” says Ryan Klein an assistant professor in the Department of Environmental Horticulture at the University of Florida “We have these massive populations in urban areas And we’re seeing more extreme weather like hurricanes Trees can help to offset some of these negative effects.” experts like Klein warn that due to ineffective methods and techniques being used it’s common to see urban trees in poor health and trees planted in cities often have very high mortality rates “We have the understanding of how to grow healthier more sustainable and resilient forests,” says Klein money or internal know-how on implementing this.” A review of 16 scientific studies on urban tree mortality found that in the first five years after planting “Urban soils are not very tree-friendly currently,” says Rik De Vreese leader of the Urban Forestry Team at the European Forestry Institute such as trunks falling over and causing damage or roots warping sidewalks the Stockholm Tree Pit method — and the way that it’s been implemented in Sweden — is helping urban forests genuinely take root One of the first locations where Embrén introduced a tree pit was Erik Dahlbergsallén street in Stockholm not far from the popular Swedish Museum of Natural History the circumference of a selection of those planted trees increased from 30 to 35 centimeters to 70 to 83 centimeters between 2004 and 2013 even surpassing that of trees without the tree pits that have been there for more than 80 years The latest figures from 2024 saw them reach between 100 and 136 centimeters “It’s easy to see how effective the pits have been,” says Embrén The municipality estimates that 2.3 million liters of rainwater are managed by the trees per year 4,600 square meters of roofs and sidewalks have been disconnected from the sewage system reducing the burden on water treatment services This technique has proven so successful that it has become the standard for all other development projects in the public spaces of Stockholm Embrén says he has been directly involved in constructing more than 3,000 tree pits there are now three “tree officers” who have taken on the expanding role estimates that the city now builds between 500 and 1,000 tree pits a year the tree pits are also in almost every Swedish city — with a few variations “Some have copied and changed a little bit like adding pumice to the stone mix,” says Embrén Stockholm’s tree pits are now spreading across Europe, too. In Budapest, Hungary’s capital, the tree pits can be found all over Bartók Béla Boulevard and Arany János Street Embrén says the Spanish city of Madrid has implemented the method using local materials And it’s become increasingly popular in the U.K Ben Rose, the principal arboricultural consultant at U.K. tree service Bosky Trees and the founder of Stockholm Tree Pits a U.K.-based company that produces the equipment required to make tree pits says that he has planted about 500 trees using the Stockholm model in the U.K mostly as part of small-scale pilot projects “The approach is very suitable for use in urban situations and beside walkways or cycle paths,” says Rose Yet there are some drawbacks to the system the pits can require a large amount of space to install and it is impossible to reuse existing soil for now there is a relative dearth of professionals who know how to construct tree pits “Our main concern is the price,” says De Vreese whose team is currently studying the importance of “structural soils” like those deployed by the tree pits “Excavating the soil surrounding the tree and refilling it is no small job.” And while Professor Klein praises the Stockholm Tree Pit’s use of structural soil and how effective it’s proven to be he notes that the long-term success of urban forestry also relies on other factors such as the supply of high quality nursery stock and proactive tree management such as routine pruning by municipalities “If we don’t have these we are setting ourselves up for failure,” he says and they have public officials seriously behind it Peter Yeung is a Contributing Editor at Reasons to be Cheerful he also writes for publications including the Guardian the Miyawaki method of reforestation has taken root in a wide range of landscapes creating more shade in its most vulnerable neighborhoods is making a vital difference weekly newsletter is the uplift you’ve been looking for Listed below are all the stories you've bookmarked. Index published Friday by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) politically motivated arrests and state control over media as key factors in the country’s continued decline in press freedom The ranking places Turkey in the lowest tier of the index for the second consecutive year falling one position from its 2024 ranking of 158th Turkey remains among the world’s most repressive environments for journalists financial sanctions and violence against reporters 90 percent of Turkey’s national media is under direct or indirect government control authorities escalated their crackdown on critical journalism Police violence and mass arrests were used against reporters covering political rallies and street protests Online censorship politically charged lawsuits and punitive court decisions have become standard tools of state repression Journalists are frequently stripped of their press credentials particularly those working for opposition or independent outlets Courts acting in line with executive interests regularly order the removal of online articles exposing corruption or government misconduct A proposed law on “agents of influence” is expected to broaden the state’s power to criminalize dissent and further restrict press freedom State and pro-government business interests endanger media pluralism by channeling ads and subsidies to media outlets that give them favorable coverage The Press Advertising Agency (BIK) routinely withholds public ads from news outlets critical of the government while the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) imposes heavy fines on opposition broadcasters These tactics contribute to financial instability in independent media; some newspapers shut down due to rising costs Journalists who criticize government officials or religious figures often face charges of “insult.” Women journalists who report on domestic violence or abuse are frequently targeted by coordinated hate campaigns on social media Politicians from the far-right Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) a key ally of Erdoğan’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) have issued threats against reporters covering sensitive issues including corruption and human rights abuses Journalists covering anti-government protests or attacks on secularism face heightened risks of violence and intimidation According to data from the Media and Law Studies Association there are currently 37 journalists and media workers in prison in Turkey mainly comprising Kurdish journalists and those who worked for media outlets affiliated with the faith-based Gülen movement inspired the late Muslim cleric Fethullah Gülen President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has been targeting followers of the Gülen movement inspired by the late Muslim cleric Fethullah Gülen since corruption investigations revealed in December 2013 implicated then-prime minister Erdoğan as well as some members of his family and inner circle Dismissing the investigations as a Gülenist coup and a conspiracy against his government Erdoğan designated the movement as a terrorist organization and began to target its members He intensified the crackdown on the movement following an abortive putsch in 2016 that he accused Gülen of masterminding The movement strongly denies involvement in the coup attempt or any terrorist activity The World Press Freedom Index score is calculated on a scale from 0 to 100 with 100 representing the highest level of press freedom RSF evaluates countries across five indicators: political context sociocultural pressures and journalist safety Each indicator contributes equally to a country’s final score which then determines its ranking on a color-coded map Turkey is classified in the “very serious” category Global law firm White & Case LLP has advised messages of solidarity with the Palestinian people and artists call for urgent humanitarian access to Gaza and accountability for what participants described as acts of genocide carried out by Israel The march proceeded peacefully toward Segel Torg Square under close police supervision Protesters carried banners reading “Children are being killed in Gaza,” “Schools and hospitals are being bombed,” and “Impose a genocide embargo on Israel.” Slogans such as “Freedom for Palestine” and “No to the Trump plan” echoed through the streets as demonstrators denounced international inaction in the face of what they called a humanitarian catastrophe local performers wearing Palestinian scarves dedicated songs to children in Gaza drawing emotional responses from the crowd The protest focused not only on solidarity with Palestinians but also on broader issues of human rights and international justice Swedish activist and academic Roberto Felicetti described the situation in Gaza as a modern-day genocide “Innocent people and children continue to be targeted Remaining silent means being complicit in genocide,” he said urging international communities not to normalize what he called a massacre “This is not only a violation of human rights — it’s an attack on democracy.” blocking essential supplies from entering the enclave despite multiple reports of famine in the war-devastated territory The Israeli army renewed its assault on Gaza on March 18 19 ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement with the Palestinian resistance group Hamas More than 52,400 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza in a brutal Israeli onslaught since October 2023 Not even a year after winning our first piece of major silverware in a generation Chelsea had lifted another trophy and were heading for a European final An epic comeback against Vicenza at Stamford Bridge booked our place in the Stockholm showpiece where we would try to win the Cup Winners’ Cup for the second time in our history Joachim Low’s Stuttgart defeated Lokomotiv Moscow 3-1 on aggregate It would be our first meeting against the German side who like us were the reigning domestic cup holders and finished the season in fourth place in the league They gave us this tankard to mark the occasion The Chelsea team travelled out the day before the game Gianfranco Zola had torn a groin muscle in a big home win over Liverpool a few weeks earlier Dennis Wise was returning from a thigh injury and Graeme Le Saux had suffered a kick to his calf Player-manager Gianluca Vialli had big decisions to make Vialli led training sessions on the eve of the game and matchday morning It was then that he informed Zola he was not prepared to risk him for the full 90 minutes and would instead be selecting himself and Tore Andre Flo in attack but with Le Saux and long-term absentee Celestine Babayaro ruled out youngster Danny Granville was the choice at left-back Chelsea’s matchday attire included a navy and white anthem jacket with the fixture details embroidered (which like the medal and the tankard you can view in our museum) and yellow and red coats and sweaters for those players not in the matchday squad They were what our shirt maker Umbro had available in the size run required at short notice were worn by England at that summer’s World Cup It had hosted eight games at the 1958 World Cup including the final when a 17-year-old Pele fired Brazil to glory against the hosts the traditional four-stand ground had a pitch not befitting of a European showpiece Chelsea began the better on its lumps and bumps but good chances were few and far between in a typically tight final Vialli and his men were roared on by a phenomenal travelling support with some estimates identifying 25,000 of the 30,000 in attendance as those of a Chelsea persuasion Stuttgart had returned most of their allocation it looked like a game at Stamford Bridge,’ declared goalkeeper Ed de Goey afterwards He saved excellently from Stuttgart’s Bulgarian star Krasimir Balakov in the first half It was the closest the Bundesliga side would come to scoring Wise and Roberto Di Matteo had our best chances but when we made our first substitution of the night Just 17 seconds after our little Italian magician had entered the fray he latched on to a clever Wise pass and thumped a half-volley high into the roof of the net It was as sweet a connection as you could hope for ‘I thought this is the moment,’ reflected Zola in later years and fortunately I hit the ball perfectly and it went where I wanted it to go.’ Stuttgart mustered little by way of a response despite a harsh red card shown to Dan Petrescu it signified the first time in Chelsea history we had won two trophies in a single season this European glory adding to a League Cup success over Middlesbrough ‘The credit has to be shared between all the chaps The celebrations continued long into the night with the players parading the trophy in front of the ecstatic blue hordes For the many thousands of supporters on the official club travel packages returning home from the Swedish capital proved harder than expected because of locally generated coach-transfer chaos and several other factors at least those fans stuck at the airport the next day could cheer the players one more time We hope the significantly smaller Chelsea following supporting Enzo Maresca and his side from the 3Arena’s away section have smoother travels but that they also return home having witnessed a Chelsea victory in Stockholm and the Blues taking one step closer to contesting another NHL.com independent correspondents Wes Crosby and Robby Stanley contributed to this report 2025 8:00 AM ESTA yellow crane hovers above a building site in Sickla a former industrial neighbourhood that’s home to one of Stockholm’s biggest real estate projects it’s manoeuvring giant chunks of wood to construction staff working in sub-zero winter temperatures This is the beginning of what Swedish property developer Atrium Ljungberg describes as “the largest mass timber project in the world.” On the outskirts of Sweden’s capital construction of ‘Stockholm Wood City’ began in October and is set to provide 2,000 new homes by 2027.  The company’s core goal is to improve the sustainability of construction projects. Building with wood instead of concrete and steel in 80% of new buildings would, according to a 2020 study by Aalto University and the Finnish Environment Institute, help offset half of Europe’s construction industry emissions Atrium Ljungberg is also championing the idea that spending time in buildings made with natural materials can help improve our wellbeing “We can tell the story about how to build a liveable city how to add nature into the city and build something sustainable,” says Håkan Hyllengren business development director for the project Erika Gerdemark/Bloomberg—Getty ImagesHyllengren hopes Stockholm Wood City will become “an international showcase” due to its sheer scale The project is set to become the biggest “mixed-use” wooden neighborhood on the planet—alongside the apartment buildings rapidly taking shape there’s also a high school opening in the fall and around 7,000 office spaces will be available within two years the buildings are largely constructed using an engineered product called CLT (cross-laminated timber) This is made by bonding together layers of wooden panels at right angles giving it a stiffness and strength that is almost comparable with steel or concrete In Scandinavia, it’s easy to produce CLT locally—and sustainably—thanks to the region’s abundance of forests. Around 70% of Sweden is covered in woodland, and in 1903 it became the first nation in the world to require compulsory reforestation “We don't have a problem where we will run out of wood,” smiles Hyllengren “We’ve actually got more forest now than we had 100 years ago Hyllengren says carbon emissions can be halved in the building construction process, since wood is lighter and quicker to build with than concrete, limiting the use of heavy machinery and energy. The 2020 research from Aalto University and the Finnish Environment Institute also highlights that wood stores carbon rather than emitting it (since it is made from trees which absorb CO2 from the atmosphere as they grow) if for any reason a wooden building is no longer needed in the future Using global data projections based on 50 wooden building projects around the world the researchers concluded that if 80% of new buildings in Europe had structures this could sequester up to 55 million metric tons of carbon dioxide per year by 2040 That’s equivalent to 47% of the European cement industry’s annual CO2 emissions and argues that Nordic forestry companies need to adapt their management practices to ensure nature remains protected as demand for wood increases Another potential challenge for the industry is fire safety But Hyllengren points out that building regulations in the Nordics are among the strictest in the world and suggests properly designed and treated engineered wood buildings offer levels of heat protection and durability on a par with conventional building materials “I think it's a bigger talking point abroad where you haven't built with wood before or not as much as we've done,” he says All of the buildings in Stockholm Wood City are required to have inbuilt sprinklers and CLT tolerates extremely high heat levels “It’s hard for the wood to actually catch fire,” explains Hyllengren it will char on the outside from around 300°C (626°F) which creates a protective barrier that limits the spread of flames Atrium Ljungberg estimates that engineered wood is approximately 10% more expensive to buy than steel or concrete says that the extra costs can be recouped elsewhere by the company “You have to look at the whole project,” he explains Since many wooden building parts arrive preassembled and you don’t have to mix wood or wait for it to dry this helps save money by saving labor hours “By building so much faster than when we build with normal concrete we can reduce the [project] time,” he adds pointing out that this also means that tenants can move in and start paying rent earlier Inside Atrium Ljungberg’s warm head office just a few blocks from the emerging Stockholm Wood City there is a miniature light-up model of what the suburb will eventually look like—and how it plans to reduce inhabitants’ environmental impact This showcases some of the other cornerstones of the development which Hyllengren hopes will improve “liveability” and create a “really unique environment.” There will be bike storage facilities a new subway station and rooftop gardens and solar panels “Pocket parks” between condo blocks and offices will be populated with wild flowers The Wood Hotel at the base of the Sara Cultural Center in the center of Skelleftea, Sweden, on Dec. 9, 2022. Jonas Ekblom/Bloomberg—Getty ImagesAtrium Ljungberg also hopes the wooden buildings themselves will boost locals’ wellbeing. There is already a small but growing body of academic research linking wooden materials with lower stress levels whenever there have been interviews [of] people visiting wooden buildings they have said that there’s a kind of fresh feeling and also ‘living in nature’ feeling,” explains Ali Amiri a sustainable buildings researcher at Aalto University in Finland There is currently little research into the greater impact of living or working in wooden properties although his team is planning a long-term study of young people living in wooden campus accommodation.  Back on the building site at Stockholm Wood City there are already signs that working with and around wood is having a beneficial impact on the construction team “It’s really much better for the workers since it's more light there's less noise—when you work with concrete there is a lot of noise,” says Sara Coletti business manager for building firm TL Bygg which is spearheading the construction side of the project In Sweden, the proportion of new, multi-storey buildings constructed with wood—or at least with a wooden frame—is currently around 16%, compared to 9% a decade ago Hyllengren believes that’s likely “to increase a lot in the coming years,” as construction firms increasingly prioritize sustainability and liveability At Aalto University, Amiri, the sustainability researcher, is also hopeful that the trend can grow globally—including in the U.S. However his research suggests progress may be slower in countries where there are no local forests more limited access to affordable engineered wood “Also in countries that are not familiar with wooden construction even in low-rise [homes] Hyllengren points out many of the architects and construction teams working on Stockholm Wood City have already been involved in similar He believes the regional buzz around building with wood has led to a “really open” climate that’s enabling its rapid evolution in the region “Companies are sharing knowledge with each other,” he says “in a way that I haven't really seen in the same way in construction with concrete or steel.” Contact us at letters@time.com Here’s your ultimate tourist bucket list for visiting Stockholm One of the most densely populated capital cities in Europe packs in attractions galore.
