Systembolaget closed due to Norwegian invasion
No, it’s not an April Fools’ joke. Swedish Systembolaget (the government owned chain of liquor stores) was closing in the town of Strömstad as a precaution because of the massive “invasion” of Norwegians expected around Easter.

the 100-mile drive from Sweden’s port city of Gothenburg to its border with Norway doesn’t exactly scream weekend road trip—it can be driven in under two hours if you don’t stop
But trust us when we say you’ll want to take your time along the coastal highway
where the midnight-blue straits of the North Sea will be in constant view
shrub-covered islets just off the mainland and you’ll find the tastiest mussels
clean waters of this part of the North Atlantic make the meat especially firm and sweet
and the chefs here keep the cooking simple—boiled
lightly seasoned—so as not to muddy the natural flavors
a Scandinavian-minimalist “boatel” floating on a pontoon
which means you can jump into the sea for a pre-dinner swim
Be sure to order the excellent pickled herring
paired here with Aquavit (the caraway complements the smokiness of the fish)
A rocky outcrop juts into the Skagerrak Strait just outside Strömstad
the last stop on your drive along Sweden’s west coast
Getting ThereIt’s easy to tack this trip onto a visit to Stockholm or Copenhagen. Daily flights from both to Göteborg Landvetter Airport take less than an hour. A train from Copenhagen—there are up to 22 each day—is three and a half hours.
What to DriveEven the rural roads are great here, but it doesn’t hurt to do this trip in an all-wheel-drive Volvo, available for rent from Europcar at the airport.
Road RulesIn Sweden, it’s the law to always drive with your headlights on, even during the day. And keep in mind that you must signal when exiting a roundabout.

Archaeologists from the Norwegian Institute for Cultural Heritage Research (NIKU) have uncovered traces of the hidden Galärvegen route
King Charles XII of Sweden used this path to move war galleys over land in 1718
the Vienna Institute for Archaeological Science (VIAS)
gives us new insights into one of Sweden’s boldest military moves during the Great Northern War
Sweden’s King Charles XII came up with a bold plan to transport twelve big warships
overland from Strömstad to Iddefjorden
This operation is known as Galärvegen or the “Galley Road.” It was part of an attempt to surprise the Fredriksten Fortress at Halden
had successfully repelled previous Swedish attempts to capture it
Charles XII hoped to bypass a blockade at the fjord’s entrance and launch a surprise attack from the sea
The scale of this operation was huge: 800 soldiers worked hard to move the galleys across 25 kilometers of tough land
and greased logs to complete the operation
Researchers found Galärvegen in December 2024 during a georadar project at Blomsholm in Bohuslän Sweden
The team started by looking for signs of prehistoric settlements and old ship settings
But when they used the new AutoMIRA georadar system
they uncovered evidence of the 1718 transport route
The georadar showed several parallel straight structures
which experts think are the remains of timber logs
Workers put these logs down to stabilize the ground for the heavy galleys
shared his excitement about the find: “This spot gives us a unique look at old landscapes
but discovering a hidden historical route was beyond our expectations
The survey revealed clear traces of the Galärvägen (Galley Road) from 1718
which is undoubtedly one of the most exciting finds from this investigation.”
The AutoMIRA system was developed by NIKU working with AutoAgri
the system allowed researchers to survey 8.5 hectares in just three days
The system uses autonomous radar to capture clear
Roger Nyqvist from Bohusläns Museum said: “The discovery of Galärvägen allows us to combine historical sources with modern technology to explore and share significant parts of our shared cultural heritage.”
The georadar survey also revealed other historical elements at Blomsholm such as prehistoric burial mounds and signs of ancient settlements
The site had earlier been a field hospital during Charles XII’s campaign
and nearby several soldiers were laid to rest
These discoveries make it harder to interpret the data
as centuries of human activity have altered the landscape
While experts continue to analyze the data
finding Galärvegen is a significant step forward for both archaeology and georadar technology
The AutoMIRA system is expected to have a major impact on how researchers conduct large-scale surveys
allowing them to uncover hidden historical sites more quickly

Swedish shipping company Torghatten AB has contracted Finnish shipbuilder Työvene to construct two battery-hybrid passenger vessels
Työvene will build two plug-in battery-hybrid vessels based on the design developed by Norwegian ship designer Multi Maritime AS
The vessels will operate on Sweden’s west coast between Strömstad and the Koster islands
this will be the first regular ferry service in Sweden for Torghatten
The two new ferries will be built for 100% electric operation with a capacity to carry 248 passengers each
commented on the new shipbuilding order: “Our target companies’ order backlog is already 200 million euros
Our target companies possess tremendous expertise and potential
operations and production can be scaled up significantly.”

The perfect place to start a luxury yacht vacation along Sweden's west coast is in the picturesque village of Strömstad. This seaside resort belonged to Norway until 1658 and features red wooden houses set on the water’s edge
Just off the coast you will find Sweden’s first marine national park — Korhavet
km protected zone is home to the country’s richest marine life
boasting more than 6,000 different species as well as reefs of deep water coral Lophelia Pertusa
The Koster Väderö Fjord is located within the park and is connected to the Norwegian Trench
which is in turn connected to the Atlantic Ocean
The conditions in the trench are almost oceanic which means creatures that would normally be found on the continental slopes thrive here
If you fancy doing something on dry land you can take a bicycle ride or a guided hike around the Koster islands
Kosters Trädgårdar (Koster Gardens) is recommended for lunch; the organic garden restaurant only cooks the day's fresh catch
garnished with herbs and vegetables it has grown and has been named “Sweden’s most sustainable restaurant”
As you make your way down south towards Grebbestad on your superyacht
you'll find yourself surrounded by hundreds of islands and islets all made of smooth champagne coloured granite rocks
Grebbestad is the shellfish capital of Scandinavia and it's where you can eat some of Europe’s best seafood
Everts Sjöbod (Evert’s Boathouse) offers shellfish safaris and an amazing shellfish lunch in its rustic boathouse
Grebbestad is a typically beautiful west coast fishing town with a dramatic rocky backdrop and quaint pastel coloured wooden houses and buildings
It is set at the head of a channel leading into the Fjällbacka archipelago and is a wonderful place for walks or sampling the atmosphere of the town
Around the corner you will find Fjällbacka
a fishing village dating back to 17th century that has been made famous through Camilla Läckberg’s crime novels
The Swedish actress Ingrid Bergman also used to have summer cottage in the village
Väderöarna (the Weather Islands) is an archipelago outside Fjällbacka in Bohuslän
Due to its location it is difficult to access and to explore the area you are best to use local tour operators
You can get an ocean kayak and glide past seals along the rocky islands and experience langoustine and crab fishing
Continuing south from Fjällbacka by luxury yacht
you have the option to take the tender through the narrow
You travel on through the Sotenäs channel passing by Smögen
situated just off the southern channel exit until you arrive at Mollösund
From this port you can reach the amazing island Käringö with your own tender or a tour operator
Käringön is seated in the southern part of the archipelago, just outside Mollösund. It is home to the Karingo oyster bar where you can enjoy exquisite European flat oysters (Ostrea edulis) and drink champagne in the wood stove-heated hot tub while you watch the oysters being collected
Käringön is also the home of the most famous restaurant in the west coast archipelago: Petersons Krog
The most popular sailing resort on the Swedish coastline is Marstrand
which is the venue for the Match Cup Sweden event that is a part of the World Match Racing Tour
Marstrand is a Swedish playground for royalty and celebrities and boasts a rich and intriguing history

You will find Pater Noster lighthouse on the Hamneskär island just outside Marstrand
which can be reached by helicopter or yacht tender
Climb the stairs to the top and enjoy the impressive views together with a glass of champagne
In this part of the archipelago you will also find Salt & Sill (Salt & Herring)
The restaurant has one of the West Coast's best locations — outdoor serving and window seats with a sea view that provides an almost surreal closeness to the sea
The restaurant’s specialty is its "herring plate" that has contributed to its international recognition
In Marstrand you will also find S/S Silla — the world's fastest floating sauna
The boat is built on two levels: on the ground floor there is a sauna
relaxation room and a jetty and on the upper level is a sundeck and conference room
Sweden’s second biggest city is the gateway to the three striking provinces on the west coast — ohuslän
Dalsland and Västergötland — and a cultured stop on a superyacht vacation
Gothenburg is relatively small with a compact centre that makes it easy to walk around between different sights
Gothenburg has a rich culture with a vast selection of museums
theatres and an opera house hosting international productions
It also has a vibrant restaurant scene ranging from Michelin-starred gourmet and trendy eateries to classic neighbourhood institutions and street food
You will find an exciting mix of international fashion brands
If you want to get pampered there are several spa options all with different styles
some in the city centre and others just a car ride away
Continuing onwards south from Gothenburg you will pass an area with mile long white sand beaches known as the spa and recreation areas of Sweden — Varberg
Somewhat further down the coast is the jet set capital of the west coast: Båstad
During the SkiStar Swedish Open tennis tournament in the middle of July the town becomes the number one party spot in the country
A car ride or tender run away along the peninsula is Hovs Hallar nature reserve
Here the ridge meets the ocean in a dramatic way with high cliffs
After a hike and a swim you can dine in the Hovs Hallar restaurant
situated on the top of the cliff with a fantastic view
Around the corner is the summer resort of Torekov, one of Sweden’s hidden gems. Even though the village is small it has many nice restaurants and several excellent spa facilities on hand (due to the proximity of multiple wealthy Swedish holiday home owners).
West of Torekov you will find Hallands Väderö (Halland’s Weather Islands). The nature reserve comprises of the main island together with the surrounding waters, islets and skerries. The island is three kilometres long and, at its narrowest, 600 m wide. It is home to birds and seals and also has sandy beaches, meadows and forest.
As you make way further down south by luxury yacht, you have the option to stop by Hven, a green island with beautiful little villages, sandy beaches, restaurants and a nine-hole golf course.
Further down south you will find Sweden’s third largest city and what Swedes call “the gateway to Europe”. Malmö is a young international city with the Danish capital Copenhagen an arm's lengths away. It is a warm and vibrant and is full of entertainment.
Malmö has three Michelin-starred restaurants. One of the most renowned is Vollmers, which aims to serve “the best of Scanina soil”.
During the summer months the west coast is absolutely bustling of life, with hot spots for sailors and holidaymakers alike. With the short nights, when it seems like the sun never really sets, it is easy to get lost in the true spirit of the Swedish summer.

In a first for wastewater treatment in Sweden
Royal HaskoningDHV’s Nereda technology has been selected as the preferred solution for a new wastewater treatment plant in Strömstad
Strömstad is renowned in Sweden as a proactive municipality that is always prepared to be innovative when it comes to improving its infrastructure
Jerry Johansson of the municipality of Strömstad
responsible for the wastewater plant said: ”We needed to increase the capacity of its wastewater treatment works while reducing the operational costs and the energy consumption
Several different types of wastewater treatment technology were considered before being rejected in favour of Nereda
which is a natural sewage treatment process that purifies water without chemicals by using the patented aerobic granular sludge technology.”
Strömstad is an increasingly popular holiday destination for tourists and the town’s population swells enormously during the summer months
more than doubling the number of residents
the municipality knew that the new plant would need to be able to cope with widely varying volumes of wastewater
The plant also has to remain efficient during very cold conditions in the Swedish winter. Furthermore
Strömstad was seeking the most competitively priced solution in terms of operational costs over its lifetime
Project Manager Bert Bakker of Royal HaskoningDHV commented: “This technology has been tried and tested all over the world
from hot and arid conditions in South Africa to very cold winters in Poland so we knew that low temperatures in Sweden would not present a problem
It also can easily adapt between high and low volumes of wastewater
particularly in terms of energy consumption
that it was by far the most competitive solution.”
The construction phase of the project has started with the plant scheduled to be ready by June 2018
Econet Vatten & Miljöteknik has been appointed by the municipality of Strömstad to deliver and install all the mechanical equipment

a favoured choice for many on cross-border shopping trips
The Sandefjord - Strömstad route has been in operation since 2014
The decision to terminate it is due to Fjord Line's new focus on routes between Norway and Denmark, public broadcaster NRK reports
"It (the route ending) was a profoundly challenging and sombre message to convey today."
Hansen emphasised the significance of this decision on the employees
as more than 220 employees are expected to be impacted
The company said that some will lose their jobs
While Color Line also operates offers ferries between the Sandefjord and Strömstad
the route's discontinuation by Fjord Line is expected to have ripple effects
Fjord Lines other routes will be unaffected by the closure and the vessel used for the service

It could have been the day when Sweden's border towns with their array of stores along the 1600 kilometre border with Norway welcomed back their big spending Nordic neighbours
when Norway eased its border controls with countries like Finland and Denmark
the agony continued for the Swedish border towns who rely on Norwegian trade to survive
We are talking ninety percent of turnover which is gone," Strömstad city council's chief executive Mats Brocker tells Radio Sweden
Norway has kept its restrictions in place for travel to Sweden

Heavy rains on the west coast have caused flooding in Strömstad
with up to half a metre of it in the cellar
Two shopping centres north of Strömstad are also affected, the tabloid GT/Expressen reports
The rescue services are reminding property owners that they are obliged to ensure that storm drains are cleared from leaves so that they can work properly
Under debattens gång uttalade Izabel Arnström Johansson
Norwegian shoppers spent a record NOK 14 billion last year during day trips over the border
New figures from state statistic bureau SSB indicate that Norwegians are attracted by lower prices and wider selection in Sweden like never before
there’s been an increase in Swedish shopping
especially in Töcksfors,” Christina Lyle of SSB told newspaper Dagsavisen after the numbers were released this week
She was referring to the Swedish town just over the border from Ørje in southeastern Norway
where Norwegian real estate developer Olav Thon has built a large shopping center
Lyle said that the more traditional border-area shopping centers in Strömstad and Charlottenburg recorded slightly lower sales figures in 2014
about a two-hour drive south of Oslo on the E6 highway
include sales from the Svinesund and Nordby shopping centers that are located off the first exit over the border into Sweden
The increase comes despite the weakening of the Norwegian krone which has reduced the exchange rate advantage of shopping in Sweden
that Norwegians still drive to Sweden to stock up on items like beer
are half-price at border grocery stores in Sweden
“I probably shop in Sweden three to four times a month,” said 28-year-old Trond Vedal
“It’s much cheaper there than in Norway
especially for cigarettes and meat.” Several others questioned cited much wider selection at Sweden’s larger grocery stores
told Dagsavisen that she also likes “the Swedish service.”
operating chief at the Maximat grocery stores in Svinesund and Nordby
said that revenues were “stable” last year
“We have said that sales had peaked every year for the past 15 years
but revenues just rise and rise,” said Tom-Erik Bakke
“I don’t see any limits any more.”

Stormy weather is expected in parts of southern and western Sweden over the next 24 hours
And trains between Uddevalla and Strömstad on the west coast will be cancelled completely this evening
From 8 pm on Thursday evening until lunchtime on Friday
no trains will be running on the Northern Bohusbanan between Uddevalla and Strömstad
since there is concern trees may be falling over the tracks
"We take these precautions by extreme weather conditions
than having passengers stranded," Beisi Sundin
press officer at the Swedish Transport Administration told Swedish Radio News
The class 2 weather warning issued by the Swedish Met Office SMHI concerns the west coast
and an area stretching east to the two big lakes and Jönköping county
as well as the islands of Öland and Gotland on the west coast
The winds are expected to reach up to 27 metres per second
The winds will increase in power on Thursday evening
reaching full force on the west coast in the early hours of Friday morning
Also other parts of the country will be affected
with first class weather warnings issued for Örebro and Stockholm counties
The Met Office weather warnings range is 1-3
with the first one referring to weather that is expected to lead to "certain risks" to the public and "disturbances" to for example public transport
A class two warning means there could be "danger to the public
large material damages" and "substantial disturbance" to important public services such as transport etc
The public is advised to follow the development via information on internet
is used when there is deemed to be "very big danger to the public" and "very substantial disturbances"
