SUNDSVALL, Sweden – A team of U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers are competing in the U20 division at the Sundsvall Open on Sunday. The U.S. wrestlers come from the Northern Michigan University National Training Site or from the Combat WC. Three U.S. wrestlers, competing in smaller brackets, secured medals in their weight classes on Saturday. Capturing gold medals were Gabe Brown of NMU/NTS at 60 kg and Brennan Carey of NMU/NTS at 130 kg. Securing a bronze medal at 87 kg is Mason Parsons of NMY/NTS Brown won both of his matches by technical fall, stopping Swedish wrestlers Otto Huuhtanen and Zet Flink Carey won his weight class uncontested, as he was the only entry at 130 kg. Parsons went 0-2 in his three athlete round robin. He lost a tight 13-10 decision to Sweden’s Johan Garbell, then lost his other match by technical fall. Six other U.S. wrestlers are still alive in their weight classes heading into the conclusion of the tournament on Sunday. All remain eligible for a medal. Four of these wrestlers were undefeated on day one, Amryn Nutter of Combat WC (63 kg), Gunnar Hamre of NMU-NTS (67 kg), Ashton Miess of Combat WC (77 kg) and Will Scherer of Combat WC (77 kg). Connecting decision makers to a dynamic network of information, people and ideas, Bloomberg quickly and accurately delivers business and financial information, news and insight around the world Swedes and Finns have long monetized their forests. EU climate goals — seen as a threat to both family wealth and the two national economies — are fast becoming a lightning rod for anger. and an inheritance she hopes to one day pass on to her children The 81-year-old’s family has cared for the 200-hectare (500-acre) forest outside the northern Swedish town of Sundsvall since the 19th century cutting down old trees and selling them to wood and pulp mills for extra cash before planting new ones 60% of forests belong to 600,000 individuals Owners like Velander have been able to work their land with relatively light regulations generally free to harvest trees when and as they chose The way these small forest owners traditionally manage their land is as they say they plant more trees than they cut down is under threat from a growing number of European Union regulations aimed at protecting biodiversity and reducing the bloc’s carbon emissions In Sweden and Finland these measures have been interpreted as a potential ban on logging trees because that’s the only way they will hit their decarbonization targets on time “The EU doesn’t understand how we manage and care for forests here in Sweden,” Velander said “It’s a big responsibility to own a forest and forest owners take that responsibility seriously.” Share of woodland held by private individuals That the rules have been set from distant Brussels adds to the sense of grievance The governments in Stockholm and Helsinki have vehemently argued that forest policies should be decided domestically But they have been slow to implement guidelines and have yet to introduce comprehensive programs to compensate or incentivize small foresters to cut down less trees the loudest voices — anti-EU populists and pro-logging big industry — are driving the debate leaving smallholders like Velander frustrated in limbo an independent Stockholm-based environmental consultant A three-kilometer (2 mile) gravel road through the forest holdings of Birgitta Velander Her plot covers around 200 hectares - roughly equivalent to two thirds of New York City's Central Park Modern forestry machines can fell large swathes of forest in a short amount of time The work is done by a sole harvester machine The harvester works in a team with a forwarder an all-terrain machine which transports logs to roads accessible to normal trucks It's a highly automated process in which the log is trimmed from branches and then cut into three parts that are then sent onwards to a sawmill or pulp and paper mill The most predominant form of logging in the Nordics is clear-cutting when nearly all trees are logged in a given area The size of clear-cuts has dropped dramatically in the past few decades web of legislation that impacts forest owners Some laws are the result of EU regulations dating back to the early 1990s before either country joined the bloc and some of which have since been revised to make it easier for foresters to log their land Those measures came up against an EU regulation agreed in 2023, known by its acronym LULUCF. It aims to expand bloc-wide carbon sink by 15% by 2030, on the way to the union becoming the world’s first “climate neutral” region by 2050 Sweden and Finland have a major role to play in this plan: Trees cover around two-thirds of both countries an area about the size of the UK and Italy combined The two Nordic governments must find ways to help the bloc reach a first set of goals within the year to avoid a clash leading to the European Court The volume of carbon the top ten contributors to the EU's LULUCF climate targets are removing from atmosphere said that regulations must “enable the continued development of a viable and sustainable bioeconomy” in which logging restrictions “should always be a measure of last resort,” in an emailed reply to questions The interests of small forest owners’ must be guaranteed Forest owners say they are already doing their part Bloomberg spoke to dozens of foresters — big and small — in both Sweden and Finland Many declined to be quoted citing potential loss of reputation The majority said they understood the role that trees play in carbon sequestration pointing out that they reforest faster than they log In Finland, as many as four new trees are typically planted for every one tree felled The country now has more forest than it did 100 years ago — albeit coming from a low baseline: Scandinavian forests were logged intensely to fuel industrialization during the early 20th century “Environmentalists and small forest owners often appear at odds with one another,” said Beatrice Rindevall chair of The Swedish Society for Nature Conservation “but the reality is that many small forest owners are ardent environmentalists.” Mostly absent from the debate are the indigenous Sami who herd reindeer in the northern forests and in the mountains above the treeline in Lapland Sweden has logged around 90 million cubic meters of standing forest volume per year and nearly all of it is transported by road at some point A timber yard in Torsboda outside Sundsvall Towns along rivers in northern Sweden have been hubs for the forest industry for centuries as the timber used to be transported by water Since inheriting her property 40 years ago Velander has been experimenting with forestry techniques — including rewetting peatland to help restore wildlife habitat and different logging methods She has already set aside some 15% of her woodland for conservation But Velander says tightening legislation is a constant source of angst. The discovery of an endangered salamander or bird, for example, would oblige her to create a protected zone surrounding the spot where it first appeared — various rules aim to safeguard local wildlife, including Natura 2000 the cornerstone of the EU’s biodiversity policy “How would it look if you told homeowners that they would not be allowed to use a third of their back yards?” she said Nordic forest owners typically inherit their forest holdings many of which have been in families as far back as the 1800s when farming in the region was modernized and communal land was allocated to individuals a plot can act as security against a loan or mortgage such as through the sale of hunting rights the real return on investment in wood production in non-industrial private forests was 10.4% Helsinki’s OMXH25 main stock benchmark fell 2.7% 11% of all forest owners use their holdings as their primary income has a role to play as removing old growth helps keep forests healthy New trees become carbon sinks after up to 10 years in the arctic forest climate Nordic foresters and their champions lean on these points as they argue that forestry is best left to local management particularly as around 80% of trees in Sweden are estimated to become short-lived products which don’t lock in carbon in the long term Some Swedish foresters said that they have already felled older trees because they expect logging to be severely restricted down the line There’s an old Finnish word for such a practice — Aavistushakkuu. The term gained prominence in the late 1990s when early conservation programs were being discussed. Marko Maki-Hakola forest director at Finland’s Central Union of Agricultural Producers and Forest Owners said he doesn’t think that many Finns are currently doing this that many of the hundreds of forest owners he speaks to each year will simply start giving up on reinvestments and maintenance of their holdings leading to woodlands potentially being neglected The company is Europe’s largest private forest owner with holdings covering over 2.6 million hectares an area bigger than Slovenia or the US state of Maryland It has invested billions of dollars in new pulp and paper machines And at its softwood pulp mill in Ostrand — the world’s biggest for NBSK the industry’s benchmark grade for pulp mostly made from conifers — SCA created 70,000 square meters of industrial land by filling in seabed to create space for a biorefinery to make airplane fuel its operating profit reached 5 billion kronor ($450 million) Since big firms such as this also buy trees from small foresters tighter regulations would likely exacerbate a supply crunch that began after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 about 10% of all the wood used by the forest industry came from Russia before the war and the end of those imports sent costs up A freight train transporting timber to the SCA Ostrand pulp mill in Sundsvall The factory is self-sufficient in its electricity and energy usage and is even a net provider of heat and electricity to the local community Reach stackers offload timber at the pulp mill The pulp made in the factory is then sold to customers who turn it into paper products The logs are debarked to get to the virgin timber beneath which is then turned into pulp SCA's Tunadal sawmill outside of Sundsvall Most of a log's value comes from the part which becomes planks and other carpentry and building material SCA Chief Executive Officer Ulf Larsson — who planted saplings for forest owners around his hometown as a teenager before joining the company three decades ago — said that regulations shouldn’t prioritize old trees over more trees “On a climate level it’s undeniable: we need to maximize volume growth,” Larsson said we need to approach biodiversity with care but we need to put the climate front and center and to do that we need to manage our forests in a way to maximize the benefit for the climate.” small forest owners need to realize their voice also carries weight and that their interests aren’t aligned with big industry logging volumes would need to fall by 3-5% impacting pulp and paper companies’ bottom line while leaving small foresters better off “Let’s say the small forest owner reduces logging by 3% but the timber price rises 15% — it’s an economic win,” he said In 2023, when the EU voted to expand its carbon sink Sweden abstained, arguing it was doing so “to protect the Swedish forest sector” — a move opposition politicians said only pandered to anti-EU populists Sanna Marin was leading a pro-environment government which has since been replaced by a center-right coalition that is more pro-business and less enamored with Green issues The implementation of a bloc-wide forest strategy was postponed at the last minute in December for another year after industry demanded more time to adapt Changes to LULUCF are now virtually impossible as it has majority support across the 27-member bloc Resolving the thorny issue of compensation for forest owners who feel they are being expected to give up income to help the EU meet its climate goals a village 6.5 kilometers from the SCA offices Anders Vestlund manages a 180-hectare forest he took over from his father in 2017 Drinking black coffee in his childhood home Vestlund said that he has experimented with selling his forest holdings as carbon credits — but with little success so far He added that forest owners should be paid for their contribution to the common good — be it for biodiversity or climate benefits “Forest owners own forests so that we can manage them,” Vestlund said “If I get paid more to let my forest stand and not cut it down With assistance by: Hayley Warren and Ewa KrukowskaEdited by: Kati Pohjanpalo and Inspectorate of Strategic Products (ISP) rejected PTL’s application unless the company accepted certain conditions PTL has now announced that the project will not go ahead The business conditions for the investment are unfortunately no longer in place aimed to establish a 100,000-ton annual capacity anode materials plant through PTL’s subsidiary The facility was intended to strengthen PTL’s position in the European battery supply chain with the first phase targeting 50,000 tons of capacity by 2025 the Swedish government proposed conditions related to Zichen Sweden’s ownership PTL found these requirements commercially unfeasible and proposed alternative arrangements PTL expressed dissatisfaction with the Swedish stance describing the control-related demands as “unreasonable” and contrary to global trade norms The company is exploring legal avenues to appeal the decision and remains in communication with Swedish authorities to assess alternative pathways for this project This The U.S. wrestlers come from the Northern Michigan University National Training Site or from the Combat WC. Claiming a gold medal at 82 kg was Aidan Squire of the Combat WC. Squire lost the first match in his pool, but a 15-6 technical fall over Sebastian Abrant of the Finland National Team allowed him to claim his pool competition and advance to the finals. Squire claimed a 6-6 decision in the finals over Santeri Karppinen of the Finland National Team to capture the gold medal. Silver medals were claimed by Amryn Nutter of the Combat WC at 63 kg and Gunnar Hamre of NMU-NTS at 67 kg. Nutter competed in a four-athlete roundrobin. He won his first two bouts by technical falls, beating Matias Arpinen of Finland, 9-0 and Leo Ljungqvist of Sweden, 11-1. He was edged in his final bout by Lauri Perkka of the Finland National Team, 2-1, which resulted in his bronze medal. Perkka won a bronze in 2024 at the Arvo Haavisto Cup and was a 2023 Nordic U20 medalist. Hamre was on fire in his pool competition, winning four straight matches by technical fall to power into the finals. In those matches, he outscored his opponents 33-0. He added: “We can see a design rich in experience and concern with regard to both the urban landscape and the cultural environment The architecture offers a playful footbridge without match in any other station the footbridge could be extended in the future towards Björneborgsgatan in an opposite turning curve.” The climate footprint of the bridge’s construction has been kept down by optimising the amount of materials used The foundations for the winning design were also deemed to be less extensive than for the other proposals and several parts of the bridge can be built separately and lifted into place thereby minimising the disruption to trains Sign up to get our twice-monthly email update Our slow travel expert train-hops coast to coast from Sundsvall to Trondheim following a pilgrim trail based on the life of the 11th-century king Religious purists probably assert that a pilgrimage requires walking rather than taking a train I wasn’t inclined to spend three weeks walking to Trondheim showing up one morning at Sundsvall railway station in Sweden for a solo three-day pilgrimage by rail The railway from Sundsvall to Trondheim casts a 287 miles (463km) thread across central Scandinavia, for long stretches paralleling the pilgrim trail known as St Olavsleden (St Olav’s Way) this is a gorgeous transect through a deeply rural region The route extends from the Swedish shore of the Gulf of Bothnia to Norway’s Trondheim Fjord where St Olav’s Way ends at Trondheim’s Nidaros Cathedral then repair to the nearby microbrewery to sample Mystic PilgrimKing Olav (AKA Olav Haraldsson) set out from Sweden’s east coast for Trondheim in early summer 1030 The story goes that his expeditionary force was waylaid and Olav was fatally injured by the blow of an axe in the Battle of Stiklestad The king’s body was interred in Trondheim and he was promptly acclaimed as a martyr and a saint Work started on the great cathedral that today is both a shrine to Olav and an icon of Norwegian national identity St Olav shown holding an axe Photograph: Hidden EuropeForests and fermentationRain falls relentlessly as the regional train from Sundsvall runs up the Ljungan Valley the hillsides tilting sharper as we head inland there’s a misty view of the striking white church that overlooks the lake I decide to appease the weather gods by stopping off for a couple of hours at Pilgrimstad a community that once relied on logging but now plays the pilgrim card to good effect then repair to the nearby microbrewery to sample Mystic Pilgrim The waiter assures me that this ale is just as holy as the water from the well and comes with “a clear aroma of English malt with hints of herbs and honey” Norwegian and Swedish trains meet at the remote station at Storlien close to the border between the two countries Photograph: Hidden EuropeThe gods are not pleased and the rain falls even more heavily as I trudge back to the station for the journey to the lakeshore town of Östersund for a first overnight stop and the jumping-off point for the seasonal 14-hour once-daily rail journey to Gällivare which is way up north beyond the Arctic Circle For those with an appetite for endless forests this route operates in 2023 from 19 June to 26 August a lakeshore haven with a dash of cosmopolitan style in the wilderness I am rewarded with watery evening sunshine and take a boat trip on a restored 19th-century steamer called MS Thomée There is chilled white wine and shrimps galore as we cruise round the island of Frösön which has always been an important way station on St Olav’s Way The MS Thomée moored on the waterfront at Östersund Photograph: Hidden EuropeA royal borderThe next day I am back at Östersund station for the train up to Storlien showcasing Norrtåg’s striking blue and yellow branding with a smart bistro area for self-service snacks and drinks We glide west through ever more forbidding landscapes Storlien cuts a dash in Swedish media as the preferred Easter getaway for the Swedish royal familyI am uncertain whether to break my journey but the helpful train manager suggests that Mörsil might be a good option “You’ll find the best cakes in Sweden at Sundings konditori,” she says Mörsil is a regular stopping-off point on St Olav’s Way so I pause for two hours and explore this small community in the hills which After a sweet diversion at Sundings, I am back on the train heading for an overnight stop at Storlien. Alighting in the drizzle, I wonder if I have made a serious mistake. It takes between six and seven hours with just one change of train in Storlien.
