‘solar technology has come a long way since the blue roof paneling we all know, and is becoming the cheapest source of energy’ the team at marjan van aubel studio shares
we can weave energy into buildings and objects to increase their functionality and transform how they look’ they add
the ‘sunne’ modern solar design combines art
and technology to create the indoor light of the future
‘sunne’ is made from one long curved strip of aluminum
85 cm in length and hangs by the window with the help of two steel wires – no external plug is needed
the design incorporates solar cells that were developed together with ECN.TNO
one of the most advanced energy research centers in europe
the cells harvest energy during the day and then store this power in an integrated battery
in order to create an ambient light at night
‘sunne’ has three settings that imitate all the natural moments of the sun; ‘sunne’ rise

seeing every surface as an opportunity to harness the sun’s energy
along with the rest of the ‘sunne’ team
van aubel is dedicated to making self-powering products that are beautiful
‘sunne’ is the first in a range of solar products to come
that will be accessible to a wider range of people
and will help to integrate solar energy into our daily environment
name: sunne designer: marjan van aubel studio sunne’s kickstarter campaign is now live, here.
AXOR presents three bathroom concepts that are not merely places of function
but destinations in themselves — sanctuaries of style
reminds me greatly of those picturesque solar events
Designer Marjan van Aubel conceived Sunne with a similar affection for the ephemeral moments when the sun rises or falls
alongside a desire to recreate the effect with autonomous power-efficiency in mind
“I am fascinated by sunsets and sunrises as they contain so many beautiful colors,” says van Aubel
“Colors you can’t grasp as they are so transient
I wanted to grasp this magical moment in a natural way
Sunne was thus created as a self-powering light that mimics the suns transitions
a solar powered light designed to hang in the window.”
Just as Sunne derives its function from the sun
so is the light’s shape inspired by the celestial body itself
“The elongated shape of Sunne is ten circles aligned in a row,” explains van Aubel
The resulting design isn’t purely one of aesthetic symmetry
but also guided by a more practical reason: more surface area for Sunne’s solar panels
Designed to hang in front of a window from two steel wires
once installed the Sunne’s 31.5-inch width subtly references the horizon while also charging up the light’s autonomous power source
Sunne’s array of solar cells were developed in partnership with ECN.TNO
one of the most advanced energy research centers in Europe
Sunne is designed to soak in sun and store the energy in an integrated battery
which it then taps throughout the evening to cast a soft ambient light with three illumination settings to choose from: Sunne Rise
Sunne launched this month (March) on Kickstarter as Marjan van Aubel Studio’s first self-initiated product
van Aubel also plans to present another sun-powered proposal of her making

We cannot ignore broadband as a key factor in maintaining environmental
Climate change is putting life as we know it in peril — hazardous air quality
parched farmland and communities once full of life wiped out by firestorms
The forecast on an international scale is simply mind-numbing
UNICEF recently reported that close to a billion — yes
one billion — children in 33 countries are most at risk of the impacts of the climate crisis
finds we are facing “a red code for humanity.”
President Biden is scheduled to join world leaders at the United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties
we have championed Digital Equity as a pathway to opportunity and a catalyst to break down the wall of poverty
Broadband also is a “green strategy” that can help lessen impacts on the environment and reduce greenhouse gas emissions and is a key linchpin
for a triple bottom-line strategy to promote sustainability
A 2021 State Survey on Broadband Adoption by the California Emerging Technology Fund in partnership with the University of Southern California shows post-pandemic
most employed respondents said they expected to continue with a reduced or no commute
The survey showed that this pattern of telecommuting could reduce 55% of vehicle trips relative to pre-pandemic levels
The survey also underscored new found interest in telehealth and online educational opportunities – saving time
is an impediment for far too many Californians — the survey found that nearly 10% of the state’s households — more than 3 million people — do not have high-speed internet connectivity at home
These findings call out the need for strategic planning and investments
Major new state and federal spending initiatives designed to speed progress
mega-projects such as modernizing power grids and building middle-mile internet connections will not happen overnight
future proofed planning now calls for deploying the most efficient networks
forward-thinking government-private sector collaborations and an evolving willingness by corporations to take on stewardship of environmental and other societal challenges
Since the federal government launched the Emergency Broadband Benefit in spring
households have enrolled in the programs to gain an internet subsidy as high as $50 a month
including more than 800,000 households in California
Congress is expected to approve a similar program
with a maximum subsidy cap of $30 a month; we are calling upon internet service providers
which pass the government-backed subsidy on to enrolled consumers
cities and power utilities to advertise this discount internet through their social service programs that serve the same eligible populations
Billions of dollars in California and across the country will be invested in deploying connections to reach rural
Construction of publicly-subsidized open-access middle-mile infrastructure that includes last-mile deployment achieves the best of both objectives — ensuring immediate Internet access for these households while also allowing other last-mile providers to access the middle mile thereby increasing competition and expanding consumer choices to include moderate prices
Corporations ready to increase their stewardship of the environment and address economic inequities (often pushed by socially conscious consumers and investors) should commit
to remote and hybrid work models — again raising the need for all to have robust affordable home internet
California is a model for the nation on environmental policy
and Caltrans and the California Transportation Commission have long acknowledged broadband as a “green strategy.” The Southern California Association of Governments
is currently quantifying how broadband use translates to fewer vehicle trips and the corresponding reduction in GHGs — to encourage virtual trips when possible
If we ignore broadband as a key factor in maintaining environmental
social and economic progress in California and beyond
we do so at the peril of ourselves and our next generations

But current approaches that encourage a binary logic of accuracy and facticity versus misinformation largely ignore the role of information and communication as cultural practices and the way that we think together and construct meaning collectively
We cannot fact check our way out of polarization
So instead of focusing all our energy on how to fight disinformation
we need to focus on creating a positive vision of what we want and how to get there
and norms that enable quality and useful information to flourish and address the interplay between the technological infrastructure in which information and media systems are embedded.
A systems-based approach can improve awareness of resource allocation
and how different funders and programming interact so that they can design more meaningful and effective objective-oriented interventions and support
this approach focuses on the way that information
and practices refract across the larger networks in which humans are embedded
along with a multidisciplinary literature review.[1]
This article is also a response to that request and offers an analytical tool to conceptualize how to achieve these goals
A healthy ecosystem is a balanced and resilient system of information creation, exchange, flow, and utilization, meaning that it has the capacity to absorb change
and transform while maintaining the health of keystone species
The media system is a central focus because most information is intermediated through entertainment
and infrastructural logic into information communications ecosystems
Anchor Institutions and Keystone Species: The Role of Media
Anchor institutions and the keystone species within them are vitally important to ecological survival because without them an ecosystem is likely to become unhealthy in ways that can throw the system out of balance and threaten its survival.
are characteristics of healthy systems and keystone species alike
Transparency cultivates trust among components of the system and with the humans involved
editorial or ownership transparency is interrelated with trust (cultivating)
Integrity and Infrastructure: Linking Technology and Information Flows
Contemporary information ecosystems are constructed on digital infrastructures that include the platforms from prior eras
but also new ones that are distinctly generative
can facilitate or impede the accuracy of content moderation
and thus impact the health of the information ecosystem more broadly because of the interrelatedness.
Healthy information ecosystems support diverse and pluralistic sources of information and must find ways to ensure information integrity
both in terms of provenance and authenticity as well as responsible information production
when information that cannot be verified floods the system
or poor digital security practices enable hacking and impersonation
the integrity of information becomes suspect and can have all sorts of pernicious ramifications
As generative AI promises to exponentially increase the amount of content created
the ability to detect and authenticate provenance will become increasingly important even as it becomes drastically more difficult.
Are donors going to strategically support this work?
The penetration of digital platforms and their economic, political, and infrastructural logic into the web and app ecosystems, fundamentally affects the health of the ecosystem. In the news media system, for example, digital advertising and the platform logic of engagement and content moderation fundamentally shape the economic model for sustainability
Cultivating an Enabling Environment: The Roles of the Public and Private Sectors
Regulatory efforts like the Digital Services Act and UK Online Safety Bill seek to bring greater transparency to some key components of the infrastructure layer
like content moderation and other algorithmic systems but could threaten others
from user-generated content to science and journalism.
Threat-based funding and interventions are largely focused on individualistic interpretations, which isolate individuals from the broader environment. It assumes that humans control their environment and “think alone as rational individuals” rather than consider how they collectively create and are situated within it; it also ignores the broader technological infrastructures that shape information creation
ecosystem analysis generates a positive vision for nourishing a thriving information system that goes beyond fighting disinformation and individual resilience to root causes and interrelated dynamics.
the donor community and practitioners can identify areas for strategic reallocation and investment
We must create the conditions for a future where accurate and diverse information is readily available
and individuals can make informed decisions that benefit themselves and society as a whole
It’s time to invest in a healthy information ecosystem

Collaboration between community leaders will be essential in ensuring success of the Biden infrastructure bill in California
President Joe Biden signed the infrastructure bill
which includes $65 billion for expanding broadband deployment and access for all Americans
The national plan is described as the most significant infrastructure upgrade in the three decades since the Cold War
“This is an opportunity to create an Eisenhower national highway system for the information age,” says a former White House National Security Council senior director
For California – the nation’s largest state – it means a minimum $100 million for broadband infrastructure that is designed to expand high-speed internet access for at least 545,000 residents
particularly in unserved and underserved communities
The federal funding will support California’s $6 billion broadband infrastructure plan
the question is how to ensure the public’s funds will be used as effectively and efficiently as possible
aggressive strategy that will maximize immediate impact and optimize return on investment
CETF has been calling for broadband deployment as a green strategy for sustainability; that urgency only grows in the wake of the COP26 climate meetings
As leaders begin to make historic investments
they should embrace these key principles for action:

In the 100 years since Iowa’s first state park
Home / Living
In the 100 years since Iowa's first state park
it has gone from mostly farmland to a mecca for rock climbers
and its forests and trails draw outdoor enthusiasts year-round
The 2,001-acre park is along the Maquoketa River north of Manchester
Many of Backbone State Park's beautiful stone buildings and arches were built by workers in the Civilian Conservation Corps
a jobs program during the Great Depression in the 1930s
When talking about the history of the state park
longtime Backbone Ranger Dave Sunne's already upbeat voice gains new animation
'My favorite talk to give is the history of Backbone
Because there were two CCC camps here at Backbone
so you can't hardly talk about the history of Backbone without talking about the history of the CCC,” Sunne said
but the young men who worked so hard while they were here and all that they accomplished.”
has been a park ranger for more than 30 years
he started off wanting to be a game warden
His plans changed after getting a summer job at McIntosh Woods State Park near Clear Lake
Becoming a park ranger requires more than a love of nature
Rangers have to have a four-year college degree - Sunne's is in fisheries and wildlife biology from Iowa State University; have at least three to five summers of job experience working in parks; and
go through the same training at the police academy as any law enforcement officer in the state
It's also a job that is hard to put a time clock on
and with a never-ending list of things to take care of
Sunne has had to learn to prioritize his to-do list
it's definitely hard to stop sometimes,” he said
Three full-time rangers work at Backbone State Park
'so I work more on the law enforcement end of it
and then I also get involved in maintenance
you've got to look at it like a small town
just like a small town would,” Sunne said
Rangers have to be certified in water and wastewater management because they are always testing and making sure the outflow of the sewer lagoons meets federal requirements
Sunne also spends a considerable amount of time checking people in and out of the park's two campgrounds and 16 cabins
Backbone State Park was the first state park created in Iowa after passage of the State Park Act in 1917; the park was dedicated in May 1920
narrow ridge of bedrock that forms the highest point in northeast Iowa - originally called the 'Devil's Backbone.”
four-season cabins and picnic shelters; 21 miles of trails and rough
rocky staircases; and rock climbing on dolomite limestone cliffs
You can fish for trout in a stream that feeds the lake and boat on the lake (electric motors only)
canoes and paddleboats are available to rent
A 100-year-old park can be challenging to maintain
many of our trees are 100 years old or older
so now we're on the other end of that spectrum
where we have a lot of hazard trees that we have to take down every year,” he said
The buildings erected in the 1930s have been maintained over the years
with the Beach Lodge scheduled for renovation this year
The rangers sometimes need to be creative when finding the funding for upkeep
this year's renovations will be funded by grant money from the estate of Leona Helmsley
'We have a lot of facilities here at Backbone and not a very big budget
to make sure that we prioritize what we spend that money on so we can maintain everything properly,” Sunne said
One of Sunne's favorite places in Backbone is the stone
While one or two weddings are held there every summer and fall weekend
it's one of the quietest spots in the park during the week
Surrounded by mature oak trees and perched atop a hill next to the Barred Owl Trail
you can see the trout stream in the distance
'It's a very peaceful part of the park normally
where you can kind of get a little bit of seclusion from other folks - when there's not a wedding,” he said
Sunne said a big rededication ceremony was planned at the park in May
but it was postponed indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic
He's hoping the plan to hold 100 events throughout the state parks to mark the system's 100th anniversary still will be able to happen this year
'We have an awesome state park system here in Iowa
they don't think about Iowa too much,” Sunne said
but we have some of the best state parks in the United States
Sunne has worked at several of those parks over the years and can't decide on a favorite
That's a beautiful park in its own way,” Sunne said
'Northeast Iowa has so many beautiful parks scenery-wise
You've got Pikes Peak and Yellow River and the Volga recreation area
The Great Lakes of northwest Iowa are just impressive.”
'I can't really think of any park that I don't like
They all have their unique characteristics.”

Product Reviews
Date reviewed: August 2022 | Tested by: Graham Mudd, BikeSocial member | RRP: £469 (jacket), £349 (trousers) | lindstrandsmc.com
I’ve had the chance to test this Lindstrands Sunne (pronounced ‘sooner’ meaning ‘healthy’ in Swedish) suit in a broad spectrum of riding conditions; from the last of the year’s frosty mornings to the downpours of late April and the hottest days of the year so far
Work commitments and injury mean I’ve covered fewer miles than I normally would
but I’ve still ridden around 1400 miles in it to date
I work 50 miles from where I live in the West Midlands and come rain or shine I ride my (lately not so) trusty Kawasaki Versys 650 and Zero DSR workhorses
It’s a varied route taking in twisty country roads
These days I find myself pottering around back country lanes with grass growing down the middle more often than hooning around the Staffordshire Moorlands
but all in all it’s a good test of any kit I happen to be riding in…
Not the warmest in deep winter (but easy to layer up)
From the outset both the jacket and the trousers impressed with their glove-like fit
the whole suit moves easily and does not impede movement
Little things like the oh-so comfy micro fleece lined collar
The devil is in the details and Lindstrands has clearly spent a lot of time in paying attention to them
On the move there are no pinch points anywhere in the suit
no matter what contorted angles I tried to ride in
The seams in the trousers too are placed so they don’t cause sore spots on your bum and the back of your thighs
which is an all too common feature of riding long distances
If you’re looking for a suit for that jaunt to the Dolomites
The only downside is the magnetic removable storm collar
I found that any thermal effect was negated by it deflecting the wind up into my helmet
plus it kept getting caught on the chinstrap when I turned my head to check blind spots
But this is a minor niggle in what is otherwise probably the most comfortable motorcycle clothing I’ve ridden in
Both the jacket and trousers are rated level AA for protection under EN17092
This is deemed more suitable for touring than the minimum A
but not achieving the current highest level of AAA
Although the textile is light and flexible
because of the quality of the suit I’ve never felt like it wouldn’t protect me if the worst happened
This feeling is reinforced by the extra layer of ‘Hi-Art’ material to give extra abrasion protection at key impact points like the shoulders and knees
The jacket comes with Level 1 armour in the shoulders and elbows
along with Level 1 armour in the knees and hips of the trousers
While the armour’s comfortable and feels suitably robust
I can’t help but feel that at this price point the suit really should come with a back armour
and I’d prefer the higher standard Level 2
however all the points are accessed through the bottom of the jacket and trouser legs
which makes it incredibly awkward to fit as the Velcro on the armour sticks to the lining at every opportunity
which is important to keep the laminate lining working properly and to reapply the Durable Water Resistant coating
and being light grey it got pretty grubby pretty quickly
Note that while all manufacturers will recommend that armour should indeed be removed before washing any garment
it can be done at your own risk using a handwash programme
but the main problem would be if it got caught up somehow and damaged the material
For everything you need to know about the safety labels in your motorcycle kit, click here
The suit as a whole has a good selection of well-placed pockets
Externally the jacket has two large lower pockets on the front that easily took my wallet and phone
with a large map pocket on the back that my wife tends to use in place of her handbag
All of them have kept their contents dry even in the heaviest of downpours
The only slight niggle I have is that there are no chest pockets
which I prefer as when you have bulky items in the lower ones they tend to dig into your stomach or hips while riding
On first glance it looks like there are chest pockets
but in reality it’s just a flap overing the zip for the chest vents
Internally there’s a wallet-sized pocket behind the storm flap
which I didn’t find for over a month – it’s that well concealed – and a wallet-sized zip pocket inside the left chest
though I don’t tend to store items inside the jacket
The outer leg pockets on the trousers are of a good size with the same press-stud and Velcro flap
though they did let a bit of water in during a heavy storm
but I wouldn’t want to keep my phone in them
but I found if you had items in them it reduced how much cool air made it to your legs
In addition to the leg pockets there are two zipped pockets on the hips that are sufficient for loose change and similar small items
The jacket has a chunky YKK main zip protected by a storm flap that isn’t closed just with Velcro
It’s an unusual design feature and I’m not sure of the reasoning for it
The vent zips all have rubber seals on them and the cuffs are closed with Velcro
The trousers have a 12” zip up the side of the leg with a final Velcro closure
however I’ve never had problems getting the trousers over my boots so have never needed to undo them
The hip pockets and vent zips are rubber sealed
while the main zip is the same chunky YKK storm flap combo as the jacket and fastened at the top with a hook and press stud
with hip and hem adjustment on the trousers
All are a combination of Velcro and press stud fastening
Truly a high point on this suit in the weather we’ve had over the last few days
The jacket has a 6” vent on each side of the chest with a vent on each sleeve that goes from the cuff almost to the armpit
The large exhaust vent is under a flap between the shoulder blades
I thought this would make the jacket draughty in cold weather but in reality I needn’t have worried
All this creates a fair volume of air to move through the suit on a bike with a smaller screen
As is to be expected, if you’re sat behind a touring screen this is greatly reduced unless you stand up. Definitely on a par with my Oxford Hinterland, and beside of a mesh jacket like the
The trousers though have the best venting on any trousers I’ve worn yet
There is a weatherproofed 6” zip on the top and bottom of the thigh
The air travels along this tunnel and through a mesh panel giving a huge amount of cool air to your legs
Stand up and the effect is greatly magnified
allowing cool air to flow all the way down the backs of your legs and across your bum
A very welcome relief from the humid sticky 27 degrees we had yesterday
it would be nice at this price point if the leg pocket design could be incorporated into the jacket using chest pockets
In cold weather all the vents seal fully and let no cold draught into the suit
Shortly after being sent the suit we had something of a late cold snap in April
with frost on the verges and a definite chill in the air
The Swedes are experts in making clothing for hostile climates since for a fair chunk of the year the north lands can be pretty inhospitable
which is why I’m a touch disappointed that the suit isn’t warmer in cold weather
I would rate myself as being ‘comfortably cool’
but wishing I had worn my Keis heated vest instead of the Innoborne removable thermal liner
For normal spring temperatures the Sunne would be cosy enough
and is certainly warmer than you’d think considering how lightweight it is
The jacket liner has the nice feature that when you remove the liner and reverse it
waiting for the outer jacket to dry or camping sat by the stove in the evening
the venting mentioned above means it’s a great suit for summer touring
Both the jacket and trousers breathe really well and I’ve not felt sticky or clammy yet
capable of protecting you from all but the worst conditions all year round
in the depth of winter you are going to need a thermal base layer and possibly a mid-layer to be properly comfortable
The Swedes would probably tell you that layering up is much more effective than relying on a single thermal item anyway
just bad clothing” as a Norwegian colleague once said
The removable liner is made from Lindstrands’ own Innoborne tech fabric
Similar to the PolarTec liner found in my Oxford Hinterland suit
yet provides a surprisingly high level of warmth in cooler conditions
However it doesn’t perform as well as the Outlast liner found in my Merlin Peake suit which
allows me to comfortably ride in sub-zero temperatures in just a t-shirt
I’m guessing it was a conscious decision to compromise size and weight with performance based on the average rider’s use
To be fair it’s more than up to the job until you approach the lower end of single figure temperatures
I also love the fact that you can unzip the jacket liner and it becomes a jacket in its own right
A nice touch meaning I don’t need to pack a softshell or hoodie for the evenings
The Lindstrands Sunne is a laminated waterproof construction
I’ve ridden through some biblical downpours and I’ve ridden through some pretty snotty protracted rain
The Lindstrands Sunne jacket has pretty much laughed it all off
which is a lovely feeling when you’re wiping your visor every two seconds trying to peer through the spray of the car in front
In those conditions you need as few distractions as you can
The only leak I’ve experienced is a stripe along my lower belly where rain has travelled up the trousers and under the jacket
which I think may be due to the jacket not having a very big overlap with the trousers
Unfortunately the trousers don’t perform quite as well
water gets through the vent in the upper thighs and trickles down your legs
which is more than I can say for most trousers I’ve had in the past
but it is really the mid-range price point for quality textile riding kit
Here are some others you might be considering around this price point…
The Oxford Hinterland has become somthing of a benchmark for well-priced textile kit at about £550 for the jacket and trousers. You can read the review here
If you want even more ventilation, you might want to consider an adventure suit, and the RST Pro Series Adventure-X stood out in our review as being good value for money at £720 for the jacket and trousers
As an off-the-wall alternative if you’re looking for a touring helmet, consider the LS2 Valiant II, reviewed here
These are just three of many alternatives – you can find all the textiles we’ve tested here and be sure to regularly check for the discounts available through Bikesocial membership.
I love this suit. Rich in features and gloriously comfortable for long distance riding. Easy to tailor to a precision fit, comfy armour, brilliant venting and it performs well in the almost all conditions. It just loses a point for falling slightly short in the worst weather and the fiddly armour installation, but these are mere niggles in what is a really well made and specified suit that gains my thorough recommendation.

whose novels about the Middle Ages were read by millions of fans
and as a student Penman wrote a draft of The Sunne in Splendour
which told the life of England’s King Richard III
the original manuscript was stolen from her car
and Penman did not write for the next six years
When she did pick up the pen again in 1982
Penman produced a 982-page version of The Sunne in Splendour
Penman would go on to write over another dozen novels, including When Christ and His Saints Slept and The Queen’s Man. She was widely lauded for the research she put into her historical novels. In an interview with Medievalist.net from 2011
“I tend to be obsessive-compulsive about striving for historical accuracy
I think it is partly because I see historical fiction as a means of awakening curiosity about the past
Readers who might not buy a biography will pick up a historical novel
So I feel a responsibility not to mislead them.”
Penman’s novels routinely ranked highly on The New York Times Bestseller List
and in 2001 she received a Career Achievement Award for Historical Mysteries from Romantic Times

Embedding solar technology into our everyday lives
there’s been a rise in solar-powered products – from coffee-making tools to headphones and the first production-ready solar car
A ball of gas and plasma 1.4 million kilometers wide and burning at 15 million degrees Celsius at its core – the sun is an unlimited source of energy
key to fighting our climate crisis and truly phenomenal
We’ve been utilizing its power for years – in ancient China
Yangsui burning mirrors were used to start cooking fires 3,000 years ago
in 1839 French physicist Edmond Becquerel observed the photovoltaic effect which is the production of electricity from light and Bell Labs researchers in the United States went on to produce the first practical silicon solar cell in 1954.
Photovoltaics have come a long way since Bell Labs’ invention – solar power captured by means of photovoltaic panels or solar electricity cells is becoming a more widespread way to power electronic devices
An important step towards living more sustainably – as photovoltaic panels become smaller
lighter and more efficient they are being increasingly utilized by designers as a renewable source of energy
Below are solar-powered products that brilliantly demonstrate the potential of this green energy and showcase the design possibilities offered by the sun
Exclusively powered by solar energy, Dutch lighting brand Sunne collaborates with Dutch designer Marjan van Aubel to create a sunlight-mimicking lamp – Sunne
Informed by the appearance of a horizon – it’s a 85 centimeter long landscape-oriented panel that’s designed to be suspended in the air
in front of a window via two wires attached to either end of its top edge
This illuminating light contains photovoltaic cells enabling it to collect solar energy during the day and light up at night
“It comprises an integrated battery that stores the collected solar power and thus doesn’t require an external power source!” says Aubel
Sunne has three settings – Sunne Rise
Bringing solar panels from our roofs into our homes – strips of colorful photovoltaic cells are beautifully arranged into a geometric pattern to form this eclectic artwork conceived by Dutch designer Marjan van Aubel
Named Ra after the ancient Egyptian sun god – this see-through solar tapestry is less than one millimeter thick and was crafted to be hung in a window
so that it can cast vivid shadows on the surrounding walls as the light changes during the day
When the sun goes down – a ring of electroluminescent paper embedded in the window hanging starts to glow
powered by the energy that was captured by the photovoltaic cells throughout the day
Ra’s purpose is not strictly to provide illumination – it instead shows how the latest generation of clear
pliable PVs can have artistic and decorative applications rather than just functional ones
“I think it is nice to show that solar energy can become a form of art – it becomes something desirable
something that we would like to be surrounded by instead of hiding it!” says Aubel
In an experiment that saw him live in an apartment without mains gas or electricity for a week – Dutch designer Boudewijn Buitenhek has built his own solar-powered kettle and coffee-bean roaster
Restricting himself to utilizing only energy he could generate from sources within his home – “on the first day of the experiment
I realized I wasn’t even able to make something as mundane and seemingly simple as my usual hot cup of coffee in the morning!” says Buitenhek
This led him to explore the use of evacuated tubes – a solar heating method discovered in the 18th century by Swiss scientist Horace-Bénédict de Saussure
Skillfully embodying a two-layer system of glass tubes – the transparent outer tube allows sunlight inside with minimal reflection
while the inner tube is coated in a solar film that converts sunlight into heat
Heat loss is reduced thanks to a vacuum between the tubes so that – water can be effectively heated above 200 degrees celsius
“This method of capturing solar energy not only enabled me to boil water for my coffee
After more experimentation – I determined that these tubes could further be utilized to roast raw coffee beans
The combination of the solar water boiler and solar coffee bean roaster enables me to make a fresh cup of coffee on a sunny day!” he says.
In an effort to bring renewable energy to those who need it – Central Saint Martins design graduate Mireille Steinhage invents a solar-powered blanket fabricated from conductive yarn
This Solar Blanket is a solar-powered heated blanket that can be wrapped around a person or draped over a sofa to direct heat toward those sitting on it
“If we want to realize a more sustainable future – being sustainable should be accessible to everyone
Solar Blanket is different from a standard electric blanket as it uses solar power to heat up – this makes it more affordable and sustainable
as you only have to spend money on it once!” says Steinhage
It’s made from polyester fabric and striped with conductive yarn to generate heat. The yarn is further covered by polyester ribbon to prevent it from coming into contact with itself when folded
Steinhage chose these materials for their – functionality
durability as well as cost-effectiveness and because they are all easy to separate for recycling
the Solar Blanket comes with a solar panel that is designed to be placed in a window to charge a portable battery.
the battery can be plugged into the blanket or other products to power them
Design and physics researchers at Finland’s Aalto University together create clothing with seamlessly concealed solar panels – making the technology invisible to the naked eye
The goal of this Sun-Powered Textiles project was to craft an energy-autonomous product capable of powering wearable devices – such as sensors that measure humidity or temperature – without disrupting the look of a garment
“A traditional way of integrating photovoltaics with textiles is to attach solar cells on the front surface of a textile to ensure maximum energy harvesting
This significantly compromises the aesthetics – a black solar cell attached on top of a fabric dominates the look of the textile or garment!” says the Aalto University team
Instead – the multidisciplinary team hid the solar cell underneath the textile of this prototype jacket and optimized the fabric so that enough light could pass through to power the wearable.
It also made the Sun-Powered Textiles machine washable
The team further sees this innovation being applied to safety and protection wear
workwear or sportswear – where it would eliminate the need for battery charging or replacement for any wearable devices.
Designed for exercise enthusiasts – both sunshine and artificial light energy can be utilized to charge the RPT-02 SOL wireless headphones by sportswear brand Adidas and speaker brand Zound Industries
“Built in part from recycled plastics and powered by light
the adidas RPT-02 SOL are self-charging sport headphones created to endure the everyday challenges of an active lifestyle” says Adidas
These headphones feature a headband that incorporates a solar cell fabric Powerfoyle that transforms sunlight and indoor light into electricity
Made by Swedish solar technology manufacturer Exeger – Powerfoyle is comprised of a stack of 100-atom-thick photovoltaic sheets that have been printed onto a plastic sheet
Although natural sunlight provides the best level of power for the headphones – household lamps and lights also power the photovoltaic material
Unlike lots of other photovoltaic materials on the market
which only harvest energy from direct sunlight – Powerfoyle is further able to garner energy on cloudy days from invisible UV rays that pass through clouds
Adidas claims that the headphones can play music for up to 80 hours on full charge
The world’s first production-ready solar-powered car – Dutch startup Lightyear unveils its Lightyear 0 electric car that has solar panels covering its roof
bonnet and boot so that it can be charged while driving
This car is powered by traditional electric charging and solar power
where people would be able to drive while it simultaneously charging from sunlight
A user interface on the car’s touchscreen dashboard gives one cloud-based updates as they drive – from charging status to how much solar energy is being absorbed and which panels are soaking in the sun’s rays at any given moment
In total five square meters of curved solar panels were integrated into the Lightyear 0 car’s roof
bonnet and tailgate – which will convert renewable solar energy into electric power for driving
Tests undertaken by Lightyear estimate that the solar cells can add up to 70 kilometers (44 miles) per day to the car’s 388-mile range from traditional charging
“Through Lightyear 0 – we are offering a new future for motorists who want the freedom of mobility with the peace of mind of sustainable energy and that future starts now!” says Lightyear

A project of
are just regular stories with a lot more labor put in
Investigative reporters spend inordinate amounts of time sifting through documents
verifying sources and analyzing data — and that’s if they can even get the data
As an investigative reporter with way too many stories I want to do
these are the tools I use to keep up with sources
Let’s take a look at 10 of the best new tools for unearthing
accelerating and keeping track of investigations:
which adds a “Find their email” button to LinkedIn profiles
We’ve all done some Facebook stalking in our day — well, okay, I have. IntelTechniques is a one-stop shop for searching through dozens of social media and website platforms
track someone down or even delve into someone’s online life
will show you all the photos a Facebooker has liked
Vetting images and videos on the web is a craft that’s still developing. Videos are more difficult than static images, in fact. Created by a consortium of journalists and product designers in Europe, the InVID browser extension is one of the most sophisticated tools yet
metadata and other info that might help you determine a video’s background
it can only handle YouTube and Facebook videos so far
Human rights groups are also very interested in making sure user-generated content is legit. The YouTube DataViewer was put together by Amnesty International
and helps to find the provenance of YouTube videos
If you don’t find much of interest on the video itself
you can run the thumbnails it generated through Reverse Image Search
right now that’s about as far as you can get with verifying video online — except
What’s one thing that sets investigators apart from regular reporters? Documents. Sqoop is a U.S.-focused site that offers a way to search court records
business filings and other documents at a national level
You can also use it to follow cases or set alerts for new docs
Another thing that sets investigative journos apart? The sheer metric volume of notes, records, interviews and other building blocks to an investigation. Evernote has two features that I think make it one of the most valuable tools for reporters out there
its free mobile app offers the best scanner and text-searcher you could ever keep in your pocket
it’s a powerhouse for keeping track of sprawling research
One story I’m working on currently has almost 100 notes
you can set up email and Slack notifications for when a page changes
With all the trolls, critics and actual spies out there, knowing if an online persona is real can save you a lot of headaches — or mistakes. The Botometer
created by university researchers in the US
gauges a Twitter account’s likelihood of being a robot
but it’s one of the best bot-spotters out there
You can also use it to check a user’s followers
to get an idea of whether they’re mostly followed by bots
Privacy and security are on everyone’s minds, and investigative reporters have more reason to worry. No matter how much you encrypt your messages or switch on a VPN, you’re still leaving traces of yourself, often in the metadata. One side route is to create a burner phone line. Burner will give you a “phone number” with an area code in Canada or the US for $5 or less
This one is less for reporting and more for the publication and visual side. Oligrapher
lets you make network maps of people and organizations
It’s easiest to make a graph using the groups and entities in LittleSis’s database
contains millions of them around the world
If the person or company you want to include isn’t in their database

If states want to address poverty and children’s outcomes
they should encourage raising kids within marriage to the child’s other parent
Married parents are key to children’s well-being and future
we are denying the next generation the environment that is most likely to set them up for stability and success
It’s time for states to think seriously about how they can incentivize family structures that help children thrive
In Oklahoma, state Sen. Dusty Deevers has proposed a bill that would help more children in his state grow up in the environment where they are most likely to thrive
The Promote Child Thriving Act incentivizes stable
two-parent households by extending a $500 tax credit for every child under 18 who is being raised by his married biological parents
For every child whose parents marry before he is born
This prioritizes the well-being of children
and rewards choices that put children first
marriage has played a vital role as the institution that protects a child’s relationship with the two adults from whom he came
This connection is not simply good for children
When considering what makes something a right as opposed to simply a desire
there are three criteria to keep in mind: A natural right exists pre-government
and a natural right is distributed equally — no one is born with greater or lesser potential to exercise those rights
Just like children’s right to life meets these criteria
so does children’s right to their mom and dad — the parent-child relationship is as pre-government as it gets
No one has to provide you with a mother and father; by virtue of your existence
And everyone naturally has exactly one natural mother and father
States need to recognize that encouraging marriage is an important part of protecting children and reducing the economic strain created by fatherlessness and family breakdown
As Brad Wilcox has pointed out in Get Married
no group of men and women is as happy as married dads and moms
Incentivizing the choices that lead to greater prosperity
and improved outcomes for adults and children alike funnels state resources toward supporting families and protecting the interests of children
This bill recognizes something important: Good family policy starts with safeguarding the best interests of children
the bill shifts the attention away from adult relationships and toward the best interests of the next generation
While some may argue the bill discriminates against some adults
it’s important to recognize that the bill is not about the adults involved
Regardless of sexual orientation or lifestyle
the only adults who qualify are those who are committed to preserving their children’s daily relationship with both parents through marriage
While this bill is not focused on fertility rates
those who are concerned with the inefficacy of tax credits to incentivize birth rates may be inclined to question this bill for the same reason
the fact that child tax credits have not necessarily changed fertility rates does not mean tax credits do not affect the choices of those who benefit from them
There are safety nets in place for fragile families. State and federal resources exist to help struggling single parents and their children
But if our policy solutions always focus on the downstream effects of family breakdown
rather than going to the source and incentivizing strong marriages and healthy families
we will have an ever-growing government attempting to address a rapidly increasing litany of social ills
no other institution protects children the way marriage does
and do more than simply react to higher rates of criminal behavior in communities with broken homes
they need to encourage raising children within marriage to the child’s other parent
Deevers’ bill is an excellent example of what that looks like
