known all over the world and made by a Swede
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the iconic
The Swede worked at Surte glassworks near Gothenburg and immigrated to the U.S
In 1915 he made his mark with the help of plant supervisor Earl R. Dean in the design of the Coca-Cola bottle at the Root Glass Company in Terre Haute, Indiana. (A design whose popularity was also immortalized by another Swede, Haddon Sundblom, who created the Coca-Cola advertising with images of Santa Claus in the 1930s: I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick)
Samuelsson was a senior manager at Chapman Root Bottling and his name is on the patent
though he didn’t get rich with the design (business owner Chapman J
modeled after a kola nut — one of the ingredients the flagship product was named for — became one of the world's most famous
considered genius because it was easy to grip
looked good and the glass didn’t break if it was dropped
The bottles are smaller today but still hold the shape it was given 100 years ago
Ikea is probably known best for its assemble-it-yourself furniture (sold with a side of Swedish meatballs
the retailer is setting its sights on something new -- the smart home
Ikea is set to start rolling out a line of connected lighting products designed to be simple
These include light bulbs and also LED light panels that can come built into Ikea cabinetry
All of the products will communicate with each other using built-in ZigBee radios -- the same standard used by Philips Hue
among others in the connected lighting category
After syncing the lights up with an Ikea ZigBee hub that you plug into your router
you'll be able to control the lights from your phone
or program them to turn on and off automatically at preset times
Listings are already live on the Swedish version of Ikea's website -- here's a full rundown:
The standard-size Trådfri smart LED
You can mount Ikea's Floalt LED panels to your wall or ceiling
This Bestå cabinet features two Surte LED doors
You can control Ikea's lights using this wireless remote
It's worth reiterating that those US
UK and Australian prices are all just rough conversions from the Swedish listings
Ikea tells CNET that it plans to start rolling these products out across Europe and North America on March 31
but region-by-region pricing and availability is yet to be confirmed
You can connect multiple Floalt panels together to form a grid of smart lights on your wall
What's interesting here is that this is such a wide lineup, and one that offers so many different ways in for consumers who might be new to smart lighting. A number of starter kits and combo deals are available, too, including a base package that includes the gateway hub
and two Trådfri bulbs for 749 Krona (about $85/£70/AU$110)
Ikea's website gives no indication that these products will sync up with any larger smart home platforms like Wink
Apple HomeKit or Amazon's Alexa for voice controls
but all would make sense should the Swedish retailer choose to expand
The potential is certainly there if the product line proves popular
Even without those sorts of connections at launch
the lineup still offers some intriguing utility of its own
aside from automating their dimming habits
many of the Trådfri lights can also shift color temperatures between a warm
Ikea's knack for consistent aesthetics might pay off
with the built-in design of those Surte panels or the fact that you can connect multiple Floalt panels together to create a grid of smart lights on your living room wall
we'll keep an eye out for the new products here in the States
and offer up our first impressions and full reviews of each just as soon as we get our hands on them

Peaceful demonstrations in Capotillo community
On 16th February 2022, “Capotillo Se Levanta” (“Capotillo Rises”), a community movement of social and popular associations in the Santo Domingo sector of Capotillo, convened a protest against the increase in fuel and food costs
Using the slogan “Parada Cívica-Popular de Capotillo
por los derechos del barrio y del pueblo” (“Civic-Popular Parade of Capotillo
for the rights of the neighbourhood and the people”)
the protesters also demanded improvements to their neighbourhood – including investment in schools
As reported by news outlet Diario Libre, the government militarised the entrances and streets of the community on the day of the protest. Hundreds of heavily armed military and police officers were deployed
“We did not see the need for all this militarisation in the neighbourhood, because what this does is intimidate the population and in one way or another people feel dissatisfied,” a protester told news outlet Listin Diario

Honda have announced that they will quit Formula One once again at the end of next season, leaving Red Bull and sister-outfit AlphaTauri without an engine supplier for the 2022 campaign
Chief executive Takahiro Hachigo confirmed on Friday that the decision was made at the end of September
one that has not stemmed from the coronavirus pandemic and the global financial crisis but from the company’s “environmental initiatives”
"This is not a result of the coronavirus pandemic but because of our longer-term carbon-free goal," he said
From 2022, Honda will use its F1 budget to fund their plans for fuel-cell and battery EV vehicles
with the company confirming in a statement: "As the automobile industry undergoes a once-in-one-hundred-years period of great transformation
Honda has decided to strive for the 'realisation of carbon neutrality by 2050
"This goal will be pursued as part of Honda's environmental initiatives which is one of the top priorities of Honda as a mobility manufacturer
Honda needs to funnel its corporate resources in research and development into the areas of future power unit and energy technologies
including fuel cell vehicle (FCV) and battery EV (BEV) technologies
which will be the core of carbon-free technologies.”
The sudden development will end their latest stint in the sport, which began in 2015 when they powered McLaren in what proved an ill-fated relationship. However, a switch to Toro Rosso in 2018, and subsequently Red Bull the following year, has reaped rewards, with Max Verstappen claiming four of his nine career grand prix wins with Honda power
That early success in their first year together helped to achieve and exceed Honda’s target of securing wins in both 2019 and 2020
with Verstappen clinching the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix at Silverstone earlier this year in what has so far proven the only race to be won by a car outside of the two Mercedes drivers of Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas
“We thank everyone at Honda for their extraordinary efforts and commitment,” said Red Bull team principal Christian Horner, whose team has already signed up to F1 until at least 2025.
"We understand how difficult it has been for Honda Motor Company to reach the decision. We understand and respect the reasoning behind this,"
"Red Bull Racing remains committed to the sport in the long term. We will now take the time to further evaluate and find the most competitive power unit solution for 2022 and beyond."
AlphaTauri boss Franz Tost added: "We want to thank Honda for the fruitful cooperation. We really enjoyed every day we’ve been working together.
“We will start looking at all possibilities to find the best Power Unit solution from 2022 onwards.”
Honda’s withdrawal is a major blow for both the two teams affected and the sport as a whole, given Red Bull and AlphaTauri have already made it clear that there is no Plan B in place to provide engine support from 2022. Under F1’s regulations, the supplier who currently has the fewest number of customer teams on the grid would be required to power any team left with an engine, which would fall on Renault’s shoulders.
But the fallout from the french manufacturer’s ugly split with Red Bull two years ago has not been forgotten, and neither side is likely to favour an immediate reunion.
The alternatives would leave Red Bull needing to structure a deal with either Mercedes or Ferrari to use their engines, or persuade another team to enter the sport in the near future.
But on a wider scale, Honda’s decision to quit the sport due to environmental influences will raise eyebrows across the sport, and leave F1 sweating on any other engine suppliers who decide to follow suit. Mercedes have put a big emphasis on electrical power after joining Formula E last season, and although Renault have committed to the future through their rebranded Alpine project, they have not been afraid to leave the sport themselves in the past.

the freelance journalist described the confusion
and absurdity of her month-and-a-half in the hands of Libya's chaotic government
A few hours after loyalist troops captured her near Libya's front lines
taking her along with three other journalists
Clare Gillis slid her ring off and scratched the date into the wall of her military prison cell
CMJ" The CMJ stood for Clare and fellow travelers Manuel Brabo and James Foley
had been shot in the stomach by Libyan troops only hours earlier and left to die on the desert floor
Gillis would dutifully record the date nearly every day for the 44 days until her release
using her ring as a writing tool and the calendar on her wristwatch to track the time
recounting her month and a half of detention by the Libyan government
they know I was here." She described a daily life in captivity that
and a constant dread that they might never make it home
"I was just completely at the mercy of whatever they wanted me to do," she said
Her captors -- a rotating cast of soldiers
and Libyan government officials whose ranks stretched from prison guard up into the Qaddafi family itself -- never seemed especially motivated by either malice or good will
but rather by the bureaucratic paralysis and lazy self-interest that often marks autocracies
Some days she was given cigarettes or allowed calls home; on others
she was stood up before hostile judges or blindfolded for hours-long interrogations
or at one point with four African women in a small Tripoli women's prison
And I think it's also a system that certainly breeds a lot of incompetence
and just reluctance to take any kind positive action
Because as long as things motor along in this very slow and very unproductive way
at least nothing's getting fucked up," she said
It labors under this mental blight of nobody ever expects anything to work out
they don't expect it to happen in a speedy manner
only made it out of Libya when prison guards mistook him for Foley
who they had been ordered to move out of jail and into a safe house for eventual release
The bureaucratic mix-up delayed Foley's release from prison -- and thus Gillis and Brabo's release from Libya -- by a week
but it may well have saved Chandler's life
who earned her PhD in history from Harvard University only months before leaving for Libya
where she reported as a freelancer for The Atlantic and USA Today
kept meticulous records of her time in detention
She was held for two nights at a temporary detention facility in a military camp in Surte
or taking the clip out and sticking it back in
just making these gun noises to keep us on edge
"I was certainly worried about getting raped
the danger zone for that had largely passed
They had their hands tied behind their backs
the three were moved to a military detention center in Tripoli
during which they had no news or contact with the outside world
they took turns retelling movies that only one of them had seen
"We're went through them scene by scene," she laughed
"You have to imagine it's actually George Clooney saying this
it would have been so devastating," she said
"Just the fact that we were able to be together for so much of our captivity ..
carrying around this terrible knowledge that we had about Anton
it just made a big difference to be able to look over the room" and know she was not alone in her grief for Hammerl
though they always discussed him and his death in code for fear of reprisal
After so much time had passed with no news or apparent progress in her case
"I can't really explain why I was angry instead of scared," she said
and that probably wasn't the best frame of mind to be interrogated in." She harangued her interrogators for the military's theft of her things
and argued with their insistence on speaking Arabic
the three journalists were brought before a judge
who sentenced them to prison for illegally entering the country and reporting without permission
Gillis was taken to a two-story building that served as a small women's prison
She relied on informal sign language to communicate with the four other inmates
who were all from Libya or neighboring countries
a man who described himself as a personal aid to Saadi Qaddafi
He brought a cell phone and allowed her to call her parents
Saadi drove his armored SUV up to the prison
"You have to get your stuff," they told Gillis
I'm here to take you out of this place," he told her
which had housed most Western journalists in Tripoli until they had moved to the Rixos across town a few days earlier
Gillis was given her own room with a phone
which she used to contact her parents and a handful of friends
She was also given a laptop and internet access
some of the hundreds of news articles describing her captivity
She was outraged to read the articles quoting Libyan officials who said Hammerl was safely in the government's capivity
Saadi told Gillis that she would be released within a few of days
recalling Saadi's intention to release her on World Press Freedom Day on May 1
it became clear that Gillis was not to be released
She was moved to a retired military officer's guesthouse
having been brought to the house by mistake
The four of them stayed at the guesthouse for nearly three weeks
a network the Qaddafi regime has accused of inciting the protests in Libya
The group sometimes quarreled over their limited supply of cigarettes -- Brabo wanted to ration them -- but mostly remained friendly
They frequently discussed their situation and how to move forward
puzzling over "the logic of the court system," on which their release seemed at the time to hinge
Is it significant that they're not handcuffing us to go outside anymore?"
Gillis said they resigned themselves to not knowing what was happening or how their case would resolve
and the misdirection that you get in a police state," she recalled
and we're just going to break our heads open on the wall."
the journalists were again taken before a judge
who gave them a suspended sentence of one year and order their release
a military convoy arrived at the guesthouse
and drove them across the city to the Rixos Hotel
where most of the foreign press corps was staying
Libyan government spokesman Moussa Ibrahim welcomed them
announcing that the Libyan government had treated them well and inviting the four to stay in Tripoli and continue reporting
"We'd been talking about the possibility of some publicity stunt," Gillis said
but the group was amazed at the bald absurdity of the government's apparent plan to spin their release
"We just got swarmed by these reporters," she said of their arrival
"It's uncomfortable for any reporter to be on the other side of the cameras and the questions."
They were tired and annoyed at having to face the reporter scrum at the Rixos
but happy to finally be on their way to freedom
Hungarian diplomats picked them up at the hotel and drove them to their embassy in Tripoli
a Hungarian diplomatic convoy drove the reporters to the Tunisian border three hours away
After spending all day waiting at long immigration control lines
they finally crossed the border into Tunisia and out of Libya
Brabo was whisked away by Spanish diplomats based in Tunis
took a long series of flights back to the U.S
who had spent much of the past month and a half in New York and Washington raising awareness for their daughter's case
"I was just so happy to be back in the country
when we were still in the same cell at the military detention center
But whatever our families is imagining is happening to us is a thousand times worse than what actually is happening to us."
Gillis's days are filled with phone calls to overjoyed family and friends
leaving her glued to the house landline for most of the day
"I'm so happy to be able to be with my family again
I'm so happy that my sisters came back," she said
We’ve always been about getting to know our customers so that we can understand and meet your needs better
From our beginnings with battery chargers in 1935 to today’s hydrogen production and renewable energy solutions
we are continually growing and evolving to address the challenges and trends you face – now
So it was with great pleasure that we were able to share some of our latest ideas and innovations with a delegation of 25 German platers
who we welcomed to the KraftPowercon headquarters in Surte last summer
The visit had been organised with the Nuremburg District Group of the DGO (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Galvano und Oberflächentechnik) leaders Udo Krüger and Manfred Hoos
shared how we are helping our customers to tackle the global challenges of climate change, digitalisation and the use of modern technologies
They showed how our expertise and solutions are supporting the general metal finishing industry to improve plating results
with fewer resources and less time required
The group also looked at how our technology addresses the challenges caused by the rapidly increasing and complex demands of the electronics industry
resulting in superior quality and production efficiency when plating high aspect ratio PCBs and miniaturised IC substrates
And how we are playing a key role in the design and implementation of electric ecosystems for the green hydrogen value chain
the DGO delegates talked directly with our engineers and product experts
This experience enabled them to see the quality of our manufacturing and understand exactly why KraftPowercon rectifiers are so reliable
Any conversation with our expert team quickly reveals how they have deep plating knowledge and a detailed understanding of how KraftPowercon solutions are used
and the environment and constraints within which they operate
we also arranged for the DGO group to visit Provexa Ytbehandling AB
the fourth largest electroplating shop in Scandinavia and users of KraftPowercon rectifiers since 1987
This visit to Provexa also proved to be something special for our visitors
especially being able to exchange ideas on continuous improvement and ways of working in an open and collaborative way
And although the DGO’s trip was business-focused
we made sure there was plenty of time for leisure
pleasure and good food – as well as a beer tasting
which we learned is a highlight for Bavarians
but we have never felt so valued and appreciated
Everyone was there from the KraftPowercon team
from engineers to CEO Ranjit [Jakkli],”
“And sparing the time to be with us over several days was greatly appreciated”
“Being able to get to know more KraftPowercon people better
and understand their thinking and their environment was good for us
and were genuinely interested in what we had to say – they are all about delivering value and want to help us to get the best results
We’ve been relying on their products for many years
and it’s good to see that they are so strongly positioned to carry on supporting us in the future”

Pickr is an award-winning Australian technology news, reviews, and analysis website built to make technology easier for everyone. Find the latest gadget reviews, news, and more focused on the only ad-free tech site in Australia
The smart lighting thing has been geared at early adopters for some time
but now that IKEA is getting into the spirit
more people can see what it’s all about
We’ve been wanting to see what IKEA has been doing about smart home technology for some time
and it looks like it’s finally happening
After hinting last year that its Tradfri (actually written as “TRÅDFRI”) smart lights would be coming to Australia in 2018
and a tumbleweed or two rolling by since then
a quick glance to the local IKEA website suggests that the Swedish furniture giant might be staying true to its word
According to IKEA Australia’s website
we’re beginning to see some of the Tradfri smart lighting gadgets rock up
even if they’re not necessarily the easiest smart lighting pieces to start with
While IKEA offers Hue-compatible smart lightbulbs overseas as part of its Tradfri range
Australia isn’t seeing those to begin with
IKEA has added smart lighting dimmers and control mechanisms for its bookshelf lighting components
IKEA’s Tradfri only exists in a part made to with with any lighting you might have already wired up for a shelving system at home
but there’s more to smart lighting than wirelessly controlling when the shelf lighting will switch on
given how invested in the lighting market IKEA is
we’re genuinely surprised the first of IKEA’S Tradfri range coming to Australia isn’t a lightbulb
since it definitely has those in other markets
We checked with IKEA’s local arm on the matter to find out if or when they would be arriving
However IKEA has said in the past that Australia would be seeing its Tradfri products in 2018
though it never indicated in what capacity
Our guess is that this begins with a trickle
as IKEA starts to bring in its entire smart light range
which will be compatible with what’s available
If anything, IKEA’s currently available smart light remote — the Tradfri remote control — gives an indication of what that might look like
“The remote control works with TRÅDFRI LED bulbs
FLOALT LED light panels and TRÅDFRI driver for wireless control.”
IKEA Australia didn’t have the Tradfri bulbs or Surte
so there’s really nothing made by IKEA for the remote to connect to
People clued into the smart home are already used to being early adopters
so we suspect IKEA’s current line of Tradfri smart lighting gear just adds to that
At least they know their gear will be future friendly
even if it might take a little bit of extra time before they can use it officially
though it should work with Philips Hue equipment
we just want to see IKEA roll out its smart lighting gear to solve the E14 lightbulb dilemma: while current smart lightbulbs from companies including Philips will let you upgrade your existing lights to smart lights using A60
and B22 mounts that cover both screw and bayonet
smart lights in Australia don’t yet cover the smaller E14 screw mount used by IKEA’s lamps
IKEA makes a Tradfri in E14 which would fill this gap
and make it possible to turn pretty much every lighting spot in your life into a smartly lit place
while also likely bringing down the cost of smart lighting so that everyone can try it

2011 ShareSave Sixteen days after she was detained by the Libyan government
journalist Clare Morgana Gillis made her first direct contact with outsiders in two weeks today
telling her parents in a 15-minute phone call that she is in good health and being held in a women's civilian jail in Tripoli. Her parents
said they were happy to learn she was safe but are concerned that she has not been released
"We were so relieved to hear from our daughter after having heard nothing for 16 days," Robert said
"We still urgently appeal to the Libyan government to let her come home." He called this a "hopeful first step" in Clare's safe return
Gillis was detained April 5 while reporting on the situation in Libya for The Atlantic and USA Today
American reporter James Foley of GlobalPost and Spanish photographer Manuel Bravo of European Pressphoto Agency
The three journalists had been moved to Surte and eventually to Tripoli
where they were kept in a coed military facility for approximately two weeks
Gillis told her parents that they communicated with each other by speaking through emptied-out electrical outlets
The journalists were split up earlier this week when Gillis was moved to the women's prison
She described the prison uniforms as "pink pajamas" and said most of her fellow inmates spoke only Arabic
a photographer with South African and Austrian citizenship
had not been with them when they were detained
Earlier reports had suggested that Hammerl
who went missing in eastern Libya on the same day
had been traveling with Gillis's group at the time
her parents reported she has not been mistreated
the Libyan government has still not allowed a foreign diplomat or humanitarian worker to visit Gillis
"We're hopeful but there is a lot more that must happen," Robert said
