will be out of a job by the end of March when the company shuts its York city manufacturing facility
The layoffs won't affect the 285 people who work in Metso's engineering and customer service office in Springettsbury Township
said his agency will work with Metso to help the affected factory workers
"Our biggest concern is the workforce and making sure there's a smooth transition," he said
The impending plant closing also means organizers of the annual factory whistle concert at the plant
may have to find a new home for the Christmas Eve event
Metso has hosted the concert at its 240 Arch St
It will hold the event again this December
"We'll have to look at what options will be available," Strayer said
The plant's upcoming closing comes amid a global downturn in demand for steel
Workers at the plant manufacture equipment used to grind rock into smaller pieces from which iron ore and copper are extracted
Demand for the minerals has fallen off as the pace of construction and infrastructure projects in China and other countries has slowed
Metso also closed a manufacturing plant earlier this year in Quebec
Pennsylvania shed 1,600 manufacturing jobs between May and June
the state Department of Labor & Industry said
About 30,000 people in the York-Hanover area work in manufacturing
The International Association of Machinists & Aerospace Workers
represents about 50 unionized workers at Metso's Arch Street plant
The other unionized workers there are represented by the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers
will be able to find jobs with other companies in the York area
it will mean a transition they hadn't planned on
"A lot of the people have a lot of years and they wanted to finish their careers there," Santone said
Metso's impending plant closing would end more than 100 years of manufacturing at the plant if another company doesn't take it over
Other owners over the years include Koppers Co.
and the Swedish company Svedala Industri AB
News that the annual factory whistle concert may have to find a new home hit Don Ryan
"I feel like I was on a 10-foot ladder and got knocked down," Ryan said
Metso stepped in to host the concert starting in 2013 after New York Wire
said it was shutting its East Market Street plant
Last year's concert was broadcast over the Internet and drew 61,000 views from 22 countries
"Metso bent over backward for us," he said
"I can't say enough good things about them."

Redding native Hillary Hurley is enjoying her time at home before she adds more miles to her eight-year journey as a professional volleyball player
Hurley has played professional volleyball in nine different countries and has competed in Europe
tasted the mouth-watering sensation of famous chocolate and sipped wine in the Tuscan-styled restaurants of Italy
She has also experienced and overcome depression
has proved she can compete against top talent across the globe
But her love for volleyball wasn't immediate
Hurley was in elementary school and initially loved basketball
That changed when Simpson College volleyball coach Mike Haworth introduced her to the sport in fifth grade
"I remember going with her as a fifth grader to a volleyball tournament
when Hillary at the time was taller than most kids," Haworth said
"She ended up seeing all these tall girls and told me she loved being with all these tall girls
That was her first experience at volleyball."
Here's a map of Hurley's volleyball travels.
explained how she became a professional athlete after playing both basketball and volleyball at the University of Hawaii-Hilo.
"It all started by jumping on a plane to Sweden," Hurley said
And that's where her story across the globe begins
Hurley said her first experience playing pro volleyball in 2013 was fun and relaxed
a town near the peninsular southern tip of Sweden
She remembers the fans being warm and friendly
"It was a great introduction because the level is good
but it's not super competitive," Hurley said
We only practiced maybe five days and had a lot of time off so I would go into the city of Malmo and explore with another American on the team."
The intensity level grew during her second year with Svedala Volley when a tall Australian named Luke Reynolds became her head coach
"We were trying to be a little bit more professional so we got more intensive," Hurley said
"He changed things for us and that was a bit more fun because I got to be more competitive
Than I realized that this game could take me to different countries
I could go up in levels and different leagues (by) pushing myself."
She described her time in Finland as one of the roughest periods of her career.
a village in the central part of the country with fewer than 3,000 people where it was cold
She said the source of her depression came from not getting enough sunlight
"I was there for 10 months and for nine months I lived in darkness and snow," Hurley said
"The people were awesome but it was such a small secluded place and I struggled with depression
What the country did offer was an upgrade in pay and competition
Hurley fought her depression by competing harder in games and practices
"The volleyball court was my outlet and so I thrived and really pushed myself," Hurley said
"I was so successful there because volleyball was my escape
I could give it everything I had for three hours
Hurley came back to Finland after playing in Puerto Rico and Switzerland in 2014 and 2015
The experience she had in the Nordic region taught her how to overcome adversity at the professional level
"You have to struggle sometimes to get the payoff like living on a beach for three months," Hurley said.
Idyllic beaches and world-class chocolate awaited Hurley after experiencing the harsh Nordic winters
after signing a three-month contract with Indias de Mayagüez
"I met some great girls and lived on the beach for three months which was nice," Hurley said
At each stop the competition level progressed and games became more intense
"The funny thing is my friends and family will ask if I just travel everywhere," Hurley said
"The first year was more like fun and games
Every year since then I'm in the gym twice a day training two or three hours and you do that every day
try to rest and then try to do it all over again."
Hurley's adventures didn't stop even as the competition level progressed in Switzerland.
"The chocolate was just fabulous and I lived in this beautiful old European town called Neuchatel," Hurley said
"It's got this beautiful lake and beautiful castle
Word of Hurley's skill and athleticism reached Asia in 2016 while playing for Hämeenlinnan Lentopallokerho
"The team actually flew to one of my games in Finland and watched me because they were wanting to replace the player they had," Hurley said
"They liked me so much that the team bought out my contract so I could leave."
She played in South Korea for Gimcheon Korea Expressway Hi-Pass for four months
which was packed with 6,000 fans nearly every match
"The culture and energy there is insane because it was so lively," Hurley said
"The way we trained and lived was very disciplined
The whole team and staff basically lived in a compound
Hurley and her teammates ate and trained at the same facility every day.
"I had to ask permission to leave because it was very structured
but I loved it because I got so much better," Hurley said
"We would train three hours in the morning
but I got so much better and I think that was a turning point career wise."
The excitement for Hurley grew even more when she joined the Petron Blaze Spikers of Manila in 2017
Hurley said the Philippines has the best fans and atmosphere in all the places she's competed
"The diehard love the Filipino fans have for volleyball is unreal," Hurley said
"To this day the fans will wish me happy birthday, congratulations and message my family
and practices were more loose than when she was in South Korea
the volleyball fans of Manila would be waiting at the arena
Hurley's time in the Philippines as a player was memorable
She was named a top receiver of the Philippine Grand Prix in 2017
"The fans would just be waiting for you at the door," Hurley said
"They would make you little gifts and presents and would have you sign stuff
That was the closest I've been to feeling famous."
Hurley said goodbye to the Filipino fans in 2018 to compete for Volley Soverato in the southern Italian province of Catanzaro
She made more bonds and continued to grow as a player
"Italy was the total package for me because it's a volleyball country and the people have a passion for it," Hurley said
"I had a great coach who pushed me and helped me develop and get better
The team was amazing and that was a team where we felt like family together
Hurley joined Energa MKS Kalisz in Poland so she could be closer with Reynolds
Reynolds was coaching a men's team and the two were a three-hour drive from each other.
While Hurley lived in Poland close to her husband
there was a cultural side effect which she said made games difficult
Now she's headed to Germany and wants to grow in the sport that's taken her across the globe
Hurley wants her story of travels and adventures to inspire the next generation of Redding athletes and volleyball players.

"I'm lucky that in the summers I've been able to come home
I've coached (Madison) and (Kennedy) Kremer and Madison Friebel," Hurley said
"To see them go from little freshman to playing in college is really impressive
She said the talent in Shasta County is underrated
but finding gym time can be difficult for players who want to improve
"We have so much talent and that's the thing people don't think about as far as recruiting athletes," Hurley said
"They all think that players come from Central or Southern California because it's such a populated area
We have talent in this area that's starting to surface and it's going to grow even more and more."
The main benefit for both us and our customers is that we can use worn-out parts to produce new and hence
in combination with fine-tuning our recipes for the furnace and by implementing a new way of working
we have now reached more than 90 percent circularity in our production
Anders Åkesson and Jörgen Petersson tell the fascinating story of how a savings program resulted in the world’s most sustainable manganese foundry
And how the teamwork at the Svedala site has been key in closing the loops of the entire value chain
“We help our customers become more sustainable and that is a business advantage for both the customer and for Sandvik"
Anders Åkesson and Jörgen Petersson also walks through the process of how every piece of metal scrap at the site
from large pieces of wear parts to small metal chips rendered from the machining are analyzed and re-used and how the Svedala site can now leverage the different alloys in all types of manganese steel
A fascinating journey that is inspirational to both industrial companies and others

BHP Billiton has received some good news in the outback of South Australia
where a crucial mill at the Olympic Dam mine has resumed operations two months earlier than expected
The Svedala mill was shut down on January 28 after an electrical fault damaged a motor coil
BHP advised in February that six months of reparations would be required
BHP Billiton's Olympic Dam plant was repaired more quickly than anticipated
has resumed operation and will start to ramp-up production
"A repair and remediation plan was implemented and this week the mill has recommenced operation
having passed all commissioning checks," the company said
"The mill's operations will be ramped up over the coming weeks and a return to full production at Olympic Dam is expected by the end of July 2015."
BHP originally warned the outage would reduce copper output at Olympic Dam by between 60,000 tonnes and 70,000 tonnes
The company has reiterating that guidance in recent days
The Olympic Dam outage and weather issues near the Escondida mine in Chile prompted BHP to announce in April that copper production for the 2015 financial year would be reduced by 100,000 tonnes
from 1.8 million tonnes to 1.7 million tonnes
the reduced production has coincided with the weakest copper prices since 2009
The red metal was fetching $US2.56 per pound on Sunday
most pundits predict a copper shortage after 2017 as existing mines start to produce lower grade ores or shut
The bullish medium-term outlook for copper may explain reports that suggest BHP and its partners in Escondida have made an offer for Barrick's Zaldivar copper mine
BHP has declined to comment on the reports
chief executive Andrew Mackenzie recently said "we are looking at things all the time
The Escondida partners include Rio Tinto and Mitsubishi
BHP and Rio are also partners in the Resolution copper project in Arizona
which recently agreed to a 980-hectare land swap as part of a settlement with Indigenous groups
That landmark agreement was under threat after US congressman Raul Grijalva tabled legislation seeking to repeal the proposed land swap
