There aren’t many motorsports that I haven’t seen live
but if I could choose only one form to introduce someone to racing
Watching drag racing on a screen can often seem boring
but when you’re at an event in person and the Top Fuel cars come out
One of the best drag strips in Europe is situated in the middle of a Swedish forest around an hour’s drive from Stockholm
Tierp Arena is huge a 165-hectare facility with a perfect quarter-mile drag strip and a horseshoe-shaped grandstand for 20,000 guests
Last weekend it played host to the penultimate round of the 2019 FIA Drag Racing European Championship
This event marked the fourth time I’ve photographed Top Fuel dragsters in action; once you’ve been baptized by nitromethane you just want to come back time and time again
I don’t think I’ll ever get used to the punch that comes with them
vibration and pressure their 10,000hp engines produce
Imagine an explosion or a jet plane flying by just a few meters from you and you’ll have some idea
then factor in itchy eyes and trouble breathing with all the nitro fumes in the air
I had to remind myself not to be scared and to keep my eyes open – no easy feat
As soon as the power is unleashed your brain blacks
Before you can really comprehend any of this the run is over
But as long as I’ve kept the shutter release firmly pushed I’ll have some shots
Wearing earplugs and earmuffs helps to save my ears from bleeding
The experience is brutal yet always very enjoyable
Many experienced motorsport photographers have said that there’s nothing like drag racing
even though it’s only a short race in a straight line
European drag racing is vibrant with many classes ranging from junior dragsters and street cars to the FIA supported disciplines: Pro Stock
I was trying to catch a perfect panning shot or a wheelie
Short breaks in the racing and track clean-ups gave me the opportunity to explore the pits and see first-hand how teams were rebuilding their engines before making another run on the strip
others still in a position to get the trophy
Then I stumbled on this truck with a jet engine
It’s actually a normal truck that uses the heat from the jet propulsion to dry out the strip surface if rain arrives
following the pre-stage sequence is a real joy
It’s interesting to see the way different teams signaled to their drivers
You can really see the differences in these relationships; some are family
while others take a more professional approach; a few may be nervous
There was no shortage of girl power in the top class of the event with the all-female final between the soon-to-be-crowned Rookie of the Year
an experienced driver who’s currently leading the championship
It’s the first year in a Top Fuel dragster for Maja
while Anita has been racing since 1987 and has three Top Fuel championship titles under her belt
Anita is a modest chicken farmer in Finland
Before winning the event with a 3.88-second ET versus a 3.91
Maja stormed to a mind-boggling 3.816-second ET at 509.43km/h (316.54mph) pass to reset the European elapsed time record set one day prior by Jndia Erbacher
another female in the European Top Fuel championship
European fans have the chance to experience Top Fuel cars for the last time this year at Santa Pod Raceway in England where the championship title will be decided on September 8

Butner broke the record using a 2012 Cobra Jet belonging to Swedish owner
The Cobra had been in storage since it was new
and it had never seen the sweet asphalt of a drag strip
TechStation featuring Bo Butner's race experience at Tierp
Using his extensive knowledge of Ford Performance products, Butner and his team tuned the Cobra and had it ready to tear up the track. The Cobra Jet that he raced is powered by a 5.4-liter V8 engine with a 4.0-liter Whipple supercharger
The race took place at the Tierp Arena in Tierp
It’s an hour-and-a-half drive from Stockholm
and the Tierp Arena is known for being one of the finest drag strips in the world; so there would have been no better place for Butner and his team to break the record
It only took three runs to get down the time that set the new record
this record was set while driving a car that had been in storage since 2012
It isn't tough for Butner to smoke the tires with this borrowed Cobra Jet
“I wish we could have finished the race, because I had every intention of putting this Cobra Jet in the Winner’s Circle. But I’m happy that we left Sweden with the record,” Butner explained in the Ford Performance article
Butner is referring to how he was not able to complete the races because of the rain
“I am happy that we were able to bring the record back to the U.S
I’m already thinking that we need to go back next year and try to go even quicker.”

It has been kind of a crazy year for strips opening
We heard some not so good news from a Swedish BangShift reader yesterday when he tipped us off to the fact that one of Europe’s premier drag strips and the best track in the country of Sweden
The track was constructed a couple of years ago and it rivals anything you’d find at the premier drag racing facilities anywhere in the world
From huge grand stands to an amazing all concrete surface
the place is bad fast and home to many significant European drag racing records
We know guys (from the USA) who have visited the place and they all reported upon their return that it was one heck of a facility
We’re not familiar with the local geography of the area but we’re hoping that it stays as a race track and is purchased by someone who wants to operate it as such and not turn it into some sort of housing development or apartment complex
the place has been historically rainy and several big events have been lost or severely hampered due to weather
Our tipster sent us along this copied message board post from a local site that is about cars and racing
He attributed this to the man who was in charge of the construction and ultimately the management of the track
After three years of unpaid work and a lot of money invested
we have been forced to throw in the towel.Throughout the project we have struggled to get the final funding
But we were not able to get the bank with us to the end
This week they cancelled our granted credits. This meant that today we applied for bankruptcy. This affects businesses and individuals who supported and helped us and we feel very sad about that
We have tried as far as possible to avoid such a situation
Here’s to hoping a group of investors or a wealthy Swede steps up and buys the track
Here’s a link to a Swedish newspaper account of the bankruptcy filing
Being Swedish American…(a poor one) I truly hope it falls into the proper hands
I’m also a poor Swedish American and hope that this isn’t the end for this track
I think I’m related to this Braktrcr guy

When most Americans think of Sweden, blondes, IKEA, ABBA—and if you’re hungry enough—meatballs come to mind. While those things do actually exist in the Scandinavian capitol city, it’s worth noting the Swedish people also have a huge affinity for American muscle cars, particularly those carrying the Blue Oval label.
One of the highlights of the Tierp event was an appearance by NHRA Pro Stock driver and championship-winning Mustang pilot, Bo Butner, who was on hand wheeling the supercharged Cobra Jet Mustang of Hakan Prytz. Butner won first round, but wasn’t able to get a win because the final rounds were postponed by rain. He did, however, run 8.53 seconds to become the quickest Super Stock driver in all of Europe.
Off the track, the vast car show had a little bit of everything including a very clean first generation Ford Escort RS 2000. Rarely seen in the States, the 1970s vintage Escorts dominated rally racing and are huge across Europe. The one we spied in Sweden was exceptionally well done. The action had us excited and we’re planning a trip back in 2017.

Drag racing across the globe took a big hit last year thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic
The new year has allowed for racing to start back up to some degree
but there are still many events globally that are being called off
The FIA has announced that its events at Tierp Arena in Sweden and Santa Pod Raceway in England won’t be held due to COVID restrictions
The FIA European Drag Racing Championship is a six-race series that gives racers in Europe the biggest of stages to race on
The COVID-19 pandemic wiped out the entire 2020 season and also claimed more than half of the 2021 campaign
Racers were hopeful they would get at least two rounds in for the FIA championship
but that opportunity appears to have evaporated
stated in a press release that the COVID restrictions would make it impossible to hold events for a championship series
“After many months of delay and uncertainty on a final decision regarding the 2021 FIA European Drag Racing Championship events at the Tierp Arena (Sweden) in August and Santa Pod Raceway (UK) in September
reached a decision that even a two-round FIA Shootout Cup will not be possible to hold
owing to the COVID-19 restrictions with travel and quarantine regulations.”
All isn’t lost for the racers of Europe; both Tierp Arena and Santa Pod Raceway will still hold races on the original dates scheduled for the FIA European Drag Racing Championship events
These races will be contested under ASN national rules
so they will be considered national events by the FIA
The FIA is already looking forward to 2022 and is putting the pieces into place for a big season when things return to normal
“DRE will now concentrate on setting up the 2022 FIA European Drag Racing Championship
which we all hope will be campaigned over six rounds
the management of DRE is discussing with the FIM to bring the FIM European Drag Bike Championship alongside the FIA European Drag Racing Championship at all rounds in 2022,” Barlett states
Fredrik Ekblom needs just one point to secure the Drivers championship as well.
After the recent TTA Elite Racing Series race at Tierp Arena, the Volvo Polestar team secured both the Team and Manufacturers championship in the Swedish national series. And as the go into the Gothenburg finale, driver Fredrik Ekblom needs just one point to secure the Drivers championship as well, giving the team a clean sweep in the TTA’s inaugural year.
The Volvo Polestar team had hoped to secure all three championship titles in Tierp but the concrete barriers in the newly designed Arena meant the team had to fight for its results.
The problems began in free practice when Fredrik Larsson crashed his BMW into the concrete barrier. Alex Danielsson would also destroyed his Citroen in qualifying, which meant the session was aborted before the Volvo Polestar drivers had a chance to make their final qualifying attempts. As a result, drivers Fredrik Ekblom, Robert Dahlgren, Thed Björk and Tommy Rustad were forced to settle for sixth, ninth, tenth and fifteenth positions on the grid, respectively.
With such poor grid positions, the Volvo Polestar squad was forced to push from the start of the race. Fortunately, Rustad converted his fifteenth position into a sixth finish. Dahlgren finished eighth after being hit hard at the end, loosing several places. Björk took his S60 to fourth, while team-mate Ekblom scored second.
That meant that Ekblom and Björk in the blue Polestar team (two cars are blue, two are black) secured victory in the Team championship for Volvo Polestar. Their combined points for the day, as the two best Volvo drivers, also secured victory for Volvo in the Manufacturers championship.
The Tierp race was won by Saab driver Linus Ohlsson, who inched nine points closer to Ekblom in the Drivers’ championship. Ekblom leads with 29 points, with only 29 points left to race for. Consequently, Ekblom needs to claim one more point in the final round to secure the title.
The finale will be decided at Gothenburg City Race Arena on September 29.
Updated to clarify that races have been moved
UPDATE: This weekend’s Swedish national championship road races
which were initially believed to have been cancelled
have been moved to a nearby motor racing circuit
due to fears raised by local residents about safety
including claims that children would have been put in danger on the original course
On Thursday, Sweden’s state broadcaster SVT reported that the organisers of the country’s national championships decided to cancel the event
which was initially scheduled to take place in and around Uppsala
the host town for last year’s championships and some 70km north of the country’s capital
However, it was announced yesterday on the eve of the event that the races were “saved” after the organisers secured the use of the Tierp Arena
a motorsport venue and drag racing arena 60km north of Uppsala and the site of the Scandinavian country’s Covid-affected 2020 and 2021 national road races
FDJ-Suez’s Emilia Fahlin won from a small group sprint on the (admittedly uninteresting) stand-in course to secure the fourth national road race title of her career
The decision to block the races from taking place on the planned course in Ulleråker
is reported to have been made by Transportstyrelsen
which withdrew permission for them to pass along a section of a route
said: “Those of us who live here have felt quite runover both by the council and the cycling club that organises the event
“There’s already a lot of construction work that makes things difficult for us on a daily basis
and with these competitions it would get even worse
with people more or less trapped within Ulleråker,” he insisted
Lindblom claimed that the organisers had caused problems with last year’s events
including not giving local residents adequate information about them
He also claimed that support cars were driven at speeds of up to 100kph
which he said led to people living locally not letting their children outdoors during the races
> Angry residents who slammed “ridiculous” traffic restrictions ahead of UCI Cycling World Championships secure compromise from council
The races are being organised by Uppsala Cycling Club
told SVT Sport that it stood to lose SEK500,000 (£37,000) if they were cancelled
“We’ve put in an incredible amount of work and money,” he explained
while pointing out that people had come to Uppsala from all over the country for the championships
“We feel as though we have been ridden over roughshod,” he added
with Uppsala Cycling Club member Robin Niller driving straight to the race track on Friday morning to prepare it for this weekend’s events
“Our working group has now found this solution via Tierp Arena
but under the current circumstances it saves our national championships.”
The Swedish Cycling Association’s competition director Lucas Persson added: “It is fantastic that there WILL be real cycling competitions in Tierp
It's really sad that there won’t be competitions in Uppsala
but it’s fantastic that we managed to come up with a solution in Tierp

He can be found riding his bike very slowly around the narrow
A few recklessly driven cars maybe with a radio in hand packed with dubious fitted bicycles may seem small danger to us
but for the country that has one of the lowest road accident victims stats in the world
Each country has their own risk perception
Don't do anything ever because it might hurt someone somewhere
Just how did humanity get this ridiculously risk averse
but one expected better of the Swedes; one/ two days a year really causes outrage
There’s already a lot of construction work that makes things difficult for us on a daily basis
with people more or less trapped within Uleraker,” he insisted
He claimed that the organisers had caused problems with previous events
including not giving local residents adequate information about them and that support cars were driven at speeds of up to 100kph
which he said led to people living locally letting their children outdoors
Reads like the "won't someone please think of the children" argument was just the excuse here tagged on the end of regular NIMBYism (and is there a "not" missing before "letting their children out"?)
Reads like a poorly planned event on public roads in residential areas
It seems ironic that most of the moans seems to be about the team CARS being a danger

Solberg recovered from seeing his championship advantage whittled down to four points by Oliver Eriksson coming into the all-important final to power to a critical third victory of the season as his title rivals floundered
Eriksson and Thomas Bryntesson had come to the Tierp Arena each with an opportunity to leave with the RallyX Nordic trophy and the challenge of the all-new Swedish venue proved a successful leveller as the trio fought for supremacy over the an eventful weekend of rallycross action
Each title contender picked up a qualifying race victory apiece but Bryntesson topped the Intermediate Classfication after staying largely out of trouble
unlike Solberg who suffered a puncture in Q2 and suspension damage in Q3 on his OSRX Citroen DS3 to leave him only fifth at the midway stage
With Eriksson second on the classification
despite a DNF in Q3 following contact off the start
both the Swede and Bryntesson reduced Solberg’s advantage to three and eight points respectively
Come the semi-finals though and it was JC Raceteknik’s Bryntesson’s turn to face misfortune when a puncture forced him out of both race and title contention
in turn promoting Solberg into a lead he’d retain to the chequered flag
When Eriksson could only manage second in the semi-final that followed after suffering his own technical issues
Solberg’s margin was reinstated to four points
Solberg got the start he needed before surviving the jostling into the turn two hairpin to secure the lead
Eriksson’s title challenge came to an end just seconds later when his attempts to get in front of Andreas Carlsson resulted in contact that forced him into the barrier at turn four
Despite his valiant efforts to get going again
Eriksson was forced to park up soon after to officially concede defeat in the title battle
Passing the stricken Olsbergs MSE Ford Fiesta on track
17-year-old Solberg – son of two-time World Rallycross Champion
Petter – knew the championship was decided regardless of the result but he’d keep it neat and tidy nonetheless to take the chequered flag as a winner for the third time this season and
as the new RallyX Nordic presented by Cooper Tires Champion
Robin Larsson marked his return to RallyX Nordic competition by avoiding drama to claim second position in his Audi A1
while Philip Gehrman secured a third podium in four starts in his Eklund Motorsport Volkswagen Beetle
Carlsson nonetheless managed an equal-best finish of fourth place in his Renault Clio
Nysum winner Ulrik Linnemann showed impressive pace driving the Olsbergs MSE Honda Civic – which was making its European competition debut – but broken suspension in the semi-finals halted his progress
much like Lukas Walfridson (Helmia Motorsport)
Ola Froshaug (JC Raceteknik) and Peter Hedstrom (Hedstroms Motorsport) whose respective day’s came to a halt ahead of the final
Hedstrom’s team-mate Daniel Thoren walked away unharmed from a sizeable semi-final crash that left his VW Polo heavily damaged
Solberg wins the title having accumulated 148 points courtesy of three wins and a total of four podiums and status of having reached the final in each event
It leaves him 11 and 16 points ahead of Eriksson and outgoing champion Bryntesson
who nonetheless end the year with a win apiece at Kouvola and Holjes respectively
RallyX Nordic presented by Cooper Tires Series Director
«An exciting way to conclude a great season of RallyX Nordic competition
huge congratulations to the title winners across all classes crowned at the Tierp Arena today
Oliver Solberg has driven outstandingly throughout the season and fully deserves to lift the championship trophy
while Guillaume De Ridder has really come of age this season in what was a high quality Supercar Lites field
we are delighted to see a big crowd turn out to the Tierp Arena for the first time to watch rallycross action at its best
It’s been a landmark season for RallyX Nordic and this memorable finale lays an excellent foundation as we prepare for bigger and even better in 2019.”
PR & Events Manager for Cooper Tire Europe
said: “Many congratulations to this year’s worthy Supercar and Supercar Lites champions
we are delighted to be part of RallyX Nordic presented by Cooper Tires
featuring seven rounds across five countries
will provide the perfect platform for yet more talented young rallycross stars to prove they have got what it takes to progress in their careers towards the FIA World Rallycross Championship – where all drivers also compete on Cooper tyres.»
RallyX Nordic Results // Round 6 // Tierp Arena
Starting the weekend with a 17 point advantage over Gundersen
De Ridder’s third place finish in the Intermediate Classification
gave him an insurmountable advantage with the semi-final and the final still to run
Marcus Hoglund picked up a superb Tierp Arena win after keeping his nose clean to defeat Guillaume De Ridder and Jimmie Walfridson
Reinis Nitiss and Nathan Heathcote scored a run at the final on their RallyX Nordic debuts
bringing home fourth and fifth place results
ahead of the out of luck Kevin Eriksson who – having been top qualifier – was on course for a podium only for technical problems to force him out just metres from the chequered flag
2018 RallyX Nordic presented by Cooper Tires Supercar Lites Champion: “I am feeling very good right now
It was good the title was decided before the semi-final and final
it allowed me to get my head down and just concentrate on the win
I was playing safe to bring the title home
This RallyX Nordic Supercar Lites win is my first international title so it means a lot to me
I have been a bit unlucky in big events in the past so I have never had the chance to celebrate like this
All the hard work has finally paid off… fantastique!”

representing the indomitable Nusu Racing Team
took on the challenge of the King Of France off-road racing competition

including an accident with a competitor and the need to change a tyre during the race
but they persevered and finished in 11th place

Joe Carabott’s Mr Whippy Racing Team are back on the international scene as they bid to win the European FIA/FIM Champion-ship for Top Methanol dragsters for a second time in three years starting with the opening round of the season at the Santa Pod Raceway this weekend
have registered to race in the 2014 Top Methanol series which wraps up with the European Finals
there will be five rounds of the championship with the other three races
Mr Whippy Racing Team opted not to defend their title in 2013 as they were mulling on other sporting adventures outside the continent but they’ve decided to race in Europe this year with veteran campaigner Monty Bugeja again inside the cockpit of their updated dragster
Bugeja was honoured for his 2012 feat in the SportMalta awards last year when he scooped the main prize at stake as the Mr Whippy outfit topped the category for teams
On his way to the European title two years ago
Bugeja had also established a speed record of 437.98kph inside the fine-tuned green and yellow Mr Whippy dragster at the Tierp Arena
Bugeja topped the standings with 467 points ahead of another Maltese pilot Chris Polidano of the Kalanċ Racing Team
Polidano will be the other Top Methanol pilot on the line at the Santa Pod Raceway this weekend while Duncan Micallef will be vying for the honours in the Top Fuel category
Shawn Buttigieg and Luke Farrugia will be competing in the European Super Street bike class
August 21-24 Scandinavian Internationals - Tierp Arena
September 4-7 European Finals - Santa Pod Raceway
Dragster racer Duncan Micallef caught the headlines for the right reasons last weekend after setting a Santa Pod track record of 3.8960 seconds during the Top Fuel Championship finals
It was a stunning 1,000-foot (305m) run by Micallef who has now established himself as the fastest male drag racer in Europe
He was 0.018 of a second slower than the 3.878 mark set by Anita Makela
Micallef first set the time in his quarter-final victory over England’s Liam Jones and then repeated the feat in the semi-finals when he had the better of championship leader Makela with an identical run of 3.89 seconds
Micallef was forced to pull out of the final after suffering clutch problems in the warm-up
Kagered’s victory in Santa Pod meant Makela topped the final championship standings on 434 points with Denmark’s Stig Neergaard second on 421
“I’m still coming to terms with what happened in Santa Pod last weekend,” Micallef told Times of Malta on his return to the island yesterday
“The weekend had started on a negative note as I had a poor time in first practice which put me in an elimination run against the top dragster in official qualifiers
“But the team worked tirelessly in the late hours and everything came together on Sunday morning with that fine run and track record
When I crossed the line I had little idea that I had gone so fast and when I saw the result I was lost for words
“In the semis I was up against Anita Makela
But we matched the morning run to win the race
that came at a cost as the engine blew up and we had to retire.”
Micallef had earned the right to compete in Santa Pod after an eye-catching performance at the Tierp Arena last month when he broke the four-second barrier to clock 3.913 seconds
who competed in the FIA competition in 2014 and 2015
is already planning to return to the European dragstrips in next year’s Top Fuel FIA championship
“The objective now is to run the entire 2017 European Champion-ship,” Micallef said
“The team was scheduled to take a sabbatical in 2016 but we decided to participate in Sweden and then Santa Pod to test the potential of our dragster,” Micallef
whose best placing in Europe was a third in 2015
“This racer can go really fast and we can be European Championship contenders
there are some aspects that have to be improved but that is normal in motor sport
“Besides we have also managed to secure some top sponsorships from abroad and they are ready to fund my championship bid for next year
now we’ll have to focus on a good preparation to make sure we reach the new season in peak form.”
