Less than three months ago, Yokohama TWS North America was touting the strength of its Trelleborg plant in Spartanburg.
Last week, the tire manufacturer announced the plant’s closing. In April, 90 workers will lose their jobs with the company, according to Yokohama’s government-required Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification.
The Japanese firm Yokohama purchased Trelleborg Wheel Systems in 2023. The Trelleborg plant opened in 2015. It specializes in tires for agricultural equipment.
In late 2024, the company’s website featured an article boasting that its Spartanburg facility “stands out as a clear example of how localized production has fostered favorable conditions to grow” and describing the plant as “one of the most automated plants in the agricultural industry.”
Efforts to reach the company for a comment were unsuccessful.
Spartanburg County Councilman David Britt, who leads the council’s economic development committee, said that plant closings aren’t always due to a businesses’ failure. Sometimes there are transitions when one company takes over another – such as the closing of the Rite Aid distribution center in 2019 after the company was absorbed by Walgreen’s – or reorganization efforts aimed at streamlining production or cutting costs.
“This kind of thing happens a lot,” Britt said. “It’s why we never take our foot off the pedal” in terms of recruiting companies to the area.
Britt said he thinks those losing their jobs with Yokohama will find good prospects for employment.
“As bad as layoffs are, if company has to close, this is where you want to be” he said. “The folks at Yokohama will have opportunities.”
According to the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce, the unemployment rate in Spartanburg County is about 3.9 percent.

Trelleborg is strategically reworking its pricing and production methods to tackle US tariffs
aiming to maintain efficiency despite second-quarter demand uncertainties
The bigger picture: Navigating through turbulent waters.
Trelleborg's strategic response to tariff challenges is part of a broader movement of companies adapting to geopolitical and economic pressures. As global costs rise, firms are reevaluating their supply chains and pricing strategies, highlighting the critical nature of resilience in uncertain times. With geopolitical factors now a constant concern, how companies adapt today can set their market position for the future.
Trelleborg's situation underscores the vulnerabilities and opportunities within the industrial sector, particularly in supply chains and regional demand variations. Whereas Sandvik notes no current tariff impact on its metal-cutting tools and mining gear, Trelleborg's construction sector hurdles highlight the differing levels of resilience across industries. Investors should keep an eye on how these companies handle tariff challenges, as it might indicate broader market trends.
