The 27-year-old goalie has agreed to a two-year contract with the SDHL team "I have chosen Frölunda for the professional environment and the club's culture offers me everything I need to develop,” says Brändli The goalie has been playing in Sweden for the past two seasons and is thus already familiar with the league the national team goaltender posted a .942 save percentage in 28 games for MoDo Hockey she had a save percentage of .936 (five games) as Frölunda complete the sweep and take home the title the golden helmets have a new home: Frölunda HC defeated title holders Luleå Hockey/MSSK to win their first-ever SDHL championship on March 16th Game three of the best-of-five series took place at Frölunda's home rink, Scandinavium in Göteborg, in front of a record-setting 8,488-strong crowd. Frölunda came into game three with two victories in hand and a goal to complete the sweep. The teams traded goals in the first period, with notches from Luleå's Sarah Bujold and the playoffs' leading points scorer, Frölunda forward Andrea Dalen. Dalen struck again just nine seconds into the second period for her fifth goal of the playoffs. Defender Nathalie Lidman took Frölunda up 3-1 with an unassisted goal midway through the period, but Luleå's Viivi Vainikka brought her team back within one before the end. The third period became a goalie battle. Luleå put up 45 shots across the game, almost triple Frölunda's 18, but they couldn't break through Frölunda netminder Stephanie Neatby to find the equalizer. 20 scoreless minutes later, Frölunda became league champions in just their second SDHL season. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Frölunda HC (@frolunda_hc) these two teams could be shaping up into a fun rivalry Each of the three games came at a one-goal margin and each team boasts some of Europe's most elite talent Both Frölunda and Luleå demonstrate what's possible when women's hockey gets real investment and real care Here's hoping a brighter future is just getting started Sweden — Three miles southwest of the Göta älv — where brick sidewalks separate the river from the opera house here in Sweden’s second-largest city — stands a silver building under grey skies The place introduces itself with bold black lettering above 20 feet of windows 15-year-old boys swing kettlebells and deadlift while others do more dynamic workouts on a three-lane blue matted floor They ring a bell on the wall when they achieve a personal best who came to play here during the 2012-13 lockout recently called the club “probably one of the best franchises outside of the NHL in the world.” This is its home base — both for the five-time Swedish champion senior team In the corner of a downstairs hallway by the locker rooms is sitting at a black table with a white hockey rink at its center Faded marker lines are still visible on the glass He’s trying to explain how Frölunda does it He has brought a laptop with a PowerPoint he made last spring at the request of the Swiss Ice Hockey Federation On the first slide are some of the club’s goals At the top: Become Swedish champion with a roster that is 50 percent composed of players from its own academy and under the heading “Compete Hard” is the phrase Alla Alltid every time” — a mantra that applies to players and ticket sales staff alike they emphasize individual development inside the team and their championship banners and the long list of alumni they’ve sent to the NHL are proof of concept Recently, one NHL team in particular has tried to become the beneficiary. In the last three years, the Detroit Red Wings have drafted six players out of Frölunda, including Lucas Raymond and Simon Edvinsson picked fourth and sixth overall the past two years The night they picked Edvinsson in July 2021 said his team’s recent run of Frölunda picks was a coincidence the Red Wings reached back to the club’s academy again taking Liam Dower Nilsson in the fifth round The answer to why Detroit — and the rest of the NHL — keeps gravitating toward Frölunda players is not on Ström’s PowerPoint “Everyone who works in Frölunda believes in this way,” Ström says But the club — which is run by a board with a chairman at the top — had gotten into the habit of spending big They were having financial problems despite leading the league in attendance Frölunda had gotten away from its developmental roots four of the senior team’s top five scorers were from Finland So Frölunda did something a little unorthodox The men’s team was coming off back-to-back Swedish league championships its third and fourth under the 10-year stewardship of a man named Mats Grauers Sävehof had a reputation for developing its own talent: 50 percent of the elite team’s players came from the club’s own handball school Frölunda’s nominating committee wanted Grauers to take over Frölunda and run it the same way was based on “great sporting interest,” frequent attendance of Frölunda games and the fact his son-in-law had played on Frölunda’s elite team Reining in the club’s finances wasn’t easy then made his way to the NHL as a first-round pick after playing at Frölunda in his draft year including moving on from expensive players like Sjöström “I think that was the right thing to do,” Sjöström says “because we needed to get the economy back in check.” Frölunda’s brass had been courting another high-profile figure for its board: Red Wings super scout Håkan Andersson Detroit had sustained itself as an NHL contender across multiple generations in part because it kept finding talent in the late rounds of the draft out of Europe: Tomas Holmström in the 10th round in 1994; Pavel Datsyuk in the sixth round in 1998; Henrik Zetterberg in the seventh round in 1999; a 24-year-old Johan Franzen in the third round in 2004 Andersson was the eye overseas who had brought them in he was hesitant about joining the club’s board — he didn’t believe the program would actually listen to his ideas Andersson was convinced to at least meet the new chairman he did so with a philosophy that the club should “own how the sport should be organized and practiced,” in addition to having specific values — humility He polled his network for a list of three potential coaches who matched that picture “They all had Roger as number one,” Grauers wrote in an email to The Athletic Roger was Roger Rönnberg — the head coach of Sweden’s national under-20 team and the man who brought the country its first (and only) World Junior Championships gold since 1981 “He was a really good coach,” recalls Wild defenseman Jonas Brodin who was on Sweden’s World Junior team that year describes Rönnberg as a coach who knew he couldn’t treat everyone the same He knew he had to get to know players in order to know what buttons to push “Kind of has that charm between being able to let loose around his players, but also demand a lot when it’s game time,” says Avalanche forward Gabriel Landeskog who was on Rönnberg’s World Junior team the year before Rönnberg was going to be in high demand when his stint as coach of the national junior team ended after the 2012-13 season When he pressed clubs for a reason why they wanted to hire him they all seemed to say the same thing: They wanted to win He met Grauers and asked the chairman why he wanted to hire him “It’s because we want to be the best club in the world of developing people — players and coaches,” Rönnberg remembers Grauers telling him “I felt really special to get that offer (from) him and I understood the mission and I loved the challenge,” Rönnberg says “And I also understood that developing people will lead to a bigger chance of winning something.” Rönnberg officially became Frölunda’s coach in 2013 Perhaps the most basic distillation of the ethos Rönnberg brought to Frölunda is plastered in white letters on a red sign above the ice at Valhallarinken — the community rink next to Frölunda’s home arena That makes it easy enough to figure out the rest: Always pressure And the club wants to ingrain it in players as early as possible Swedish clubs have the advantage of raising their future talent from a young age the playbook for how to do that is known as the Red Thread are different for 8-year-olds compared to players who are 16 or 17 But this philosophy became the essence that ran through the club from top to bottom it’s no problem if a young kid throws away a puck But Frölunda doesn’t want kids being coached to throw the puck into or out of the zone They want them to start getting comfortable holding it and passing it together with the team “We want the youth kids to start playing Frölunda hockey,” says Sjöström who retired in 2013 and has since risen to become the club’s general manager obviously the more details (that) comes with it.” Frölunda doesn’t just want these values for its own youth organization — it wants this identity in all 17 youth programs in the Gothenburg area It wants those players to grow up and dream of playing for Frölunda Especially with a goal that 90 percent of the academy should be composed of Gothenburg-area players Until the U16 age group — the last year before the academy begins with the U18s — Frölunda does not technically have an elite program the coaches are mostly parents who volunteer The club even meets with coaches from around the Gothenburg area about once a month hoping that all those youth programs (and players) will build toward the same identity the club’s goal “is not to win every game.” They’re happy to win but the key is to “educate the players.” That means giving them the same amount of ice time — not chasing results by divvying up minutes in favor of the best players at that moment but Ström points to a player on the under-20 team who started playing when he was 12 — six or seven years after most kids begin this player would make the academy program “The Frölunda way is not to tell someone that you are bad,” Ström says “It’s (to) tell everyone that you can be better.” On the night Frölunda won its first Swedish championship under Rönnberg back in 2016 — beating top-seed Skellefteå in five games — the team boarded the plane to fly back to Gothenburg The players celebrated with beers and enjoyed their victory They were just months removed from also winning the European Champions League and now had claimed Le Mat — the Swedish Stanley Cup — as well Sjöström and club director Christian Lechtaler and asked “Is this the end?” Rönnberg remembers wondering Because why did we choose to work in Frölunda It was about developing the best club in the world (at) developing people and we understood that it’s not the result that’s the end “It’s like we want to create this snowball On the first slide of that presentation Ström made for the Swiss federation one of the three club goals he highlighted reads: “All Academy players must be given the opportunity to become elite hockey players.” The academy officially begins for players at age 16 they have morning practice from 7:30 until 9 a.m stemming from the Swedish Ice Hockey Federation They put players into small groups with an instructor — sometimes grouped by position sometimes grouped by a skill area like skating Frölunda asks players to set their own goals for personal improvement They want players to identify their own strengths and weaknesses then set improvement goals for a digestible six- to eight-week period and re-evaluate they can hit the gym or step onto a miniature rink at the facility to keep working on individual elements and afterward have food boxes they can eat at the facility or bring home with them whom Rönnberg says is “the guy defining that we’re a club — not a business corporation or something.” Ström grew up a goalie in the area some youth coaching and some time spent studying in Stockholm he was hired in 2005 to run Frölunda’s youth program (from learn-to-play through under-16) before being promoted to development manager for both the academy and youth Ström is always quick to volunteer to handle it — that he’s at the building day and night “working with his soul” for the club He says he’s never seen Ström wearing anything but Frölunda clothes That comes through in the way Ström explains how Frölunda operates but especially once they’re in the academy there is a certain push and pull to player development when he was 17 — he played 32 games with Frölunda’s under-20 team “It’s important for him that in his own age he is one of the best players in the league,” Ström says “And when he plays with guys one (or) two years older I have to be better.’ And then he goes down again and one of the top under-20 scorers in all of Sweden at just 16 he spent much of his draft year playing limited minutes in the SHL against men The push and pull of development was still there “We see them for what they can be,” Rönnberg says “We have that in front of our eyes all the time.” The simplicity of that idea may belie how challenging that development process can actually be. Not every prospect will make it, and others can seem stuck at times. This season, Rangers 2019 second-round pick Karl Henriksson has seen his SHL ice time dip from 12 minutes Red Wings prospect Theodor Niederbach was recently a healthy scratch just weeks after a stretch of six goals in eight games Even in the season after Raymond was drafted 4 pick was playing only 14 minutes a night in the SHL ‘Was it easy every day to have Roger?’ I don’t think he would say yes,” Sjöström says But I think what Roger wanted to educate Lucas on is: If you’re going to be a star in the NHL you need to (be a complete player) as well … I don’t think it’s Lucas’ end goal just to be a good player in the NHL is going to be to win a Stanley Cup with Detroit someday down the road “And I think all that Roger wants is kind of to get these young players to know what it takes.” that leads to these top players emerging from Frölunda seemingly year after year as the biggest club in Sweden’s second-largest city — with all three top-10 picks in the last four years being from the Gothenburg area Or has it just become a self-repeating cycle But as Rönnberg sits in Frölunda’s team restaurant next to floor-to-ceiling windows that look out at the city Six years after that first championship under Rönnberg, that Frölunda snowball has kept growing and rolling. Between four Champions League titles and the special players who continue to emerge from Frölundaborg Växjö has won three Swedish titles in the last seven years Skellefteå AIK has been runner-up three times in that span and is one of the top teams in the SHL — now under the leadership of former Rönnberg assistant Robert Ohlsson And less than 200 kilometers to the south, perhaps the biggest challenge has emerged in Ängelholm, where the Canadian-born Abbott brothers, Cam and Chris in the head coach’s final season in his hometown of Luleå When they took over Rögle as coach (Cam) and GM (Chris) during the 2017-18 season the club had nearly been relegated from the SHL the season prior Rögle had won 10 straight games against Frölunda glad for them and their success — but they have beat us a couple of times now so the warm feelings are fading,” Rönnberg jokes “Now they’re a team that we really need to respect and we need to almost try to perfection to beat them because their progress forces us to be a little bit better.” Frölunda finished the regular season fourth in the SHL table after a rocky final few weeks of the season It faces a difficult path in the postseason and that’s after being swept by Rögle in the quarterfinals last year ended up in the lower half of the league’s table Such a move would follow the departure of Frölunda product Jacob Peterson (a Stars 2017 fifth-rounder) two seasons ago for rival Färjestad where he had a breakout year in 2020-21 before jumping to the NHL For a club that prides itself on developing its own future talent, those kinds of departures are significant — even as Red Wings 2019 sixth-rounder Elmer Söderblom has blossomed into one of the SHL’s top scorers at age 20 and Edvinsson has rapidly become a true top-four defenseman in the league at just 18 In a few years, it’s possible that a quarter of the Red Wings’ NHL lineup will have come through that system (in addition to the recent draftees, Detroit defenseman Gustav Lindstrom also spent a year — and won a Swedish championship — at Frölunda) As Edvinsson jokes of the collection of Detroit prospects with the club This brings us back to that so-called coincidence of the Red Wings drafting so many Frölunda players the famed Red Wings scout who served on Frölunda’s board after Rönnberg’s first championship — departing well before this recent run of Detroit picks from Frölunda part of the formative years of Frölunda’s current era which established the machine they’ve built Those connections surely help him get those final bits of information when it’s time to draft And he knows intimately how thorough the club’s development program is when asked about the Red Wings’ recent stretch of picking from the club I could go year after year going all Canadians as long as I know they’re better than the players that I like over here.” yes: It is a coincidence the Red Wings keep plucking players from Frölunda The draft board won’t keep falling this way forever But one key aspect is no coincidence — and doesn’t seem like it’s about to change special players continue to come from Frölunda As Rönnberg sat in the Scandinavium restaurant he thought back on that first Swedish championship He thought about the snowball rolling down the mountain and the daunting understanding they would have to keep changing and improving “Sometimes after nine years here,” he says “I can feel — when I really think about it — that I’m proud of how much we have achieved together here That the club is in a good position right now (Illustration: John Bradford / The Athletic Max Bultman has covered the Red Wings for The Athletic since 2018. However, due to mild winters and less-than-stellar players they didn’t play their first official game until 1946 They had some struggles after that though which continued through the ’80s in the 1980s they got one thing right – they developed a youth program After many up-and-down decades of relegation and promotions the 1990s (1995 to be specific) saw the club secure their spot in the country’s top league It was then called the Elitserien and is now the SHL collecting four Swedish Championships since then and becoming a perennial threat They’ve also won another four titles in the Champions Hockey League tournament since its introduction in 2014-15 many of the players drafted to the NHL actually come from their junior program the Frölunda HC J20 club which plays in the SuperElit That group has won 10 Anton Cups as the league champions Frölunda uses what they call an integrated approach in their player development A large factor of this was in implementation of Campus Frölunda in 2009 a space where all of the club’s teams could be hosted and those teams could communicate throughout a player’s development as they climb the ranks Related: Rasmus Dahlin, Hockey Culture and the Frölunda Hockey Club Assistant general manager Björn Liljander touched on this in an interview with former The Hockey Writers writer Johannes Wheeldon He noted that coaches of the various programs (U16 and A-team) meet weekly and that “…coaches from both men’s team and the academies share information and communicate amongst themselves and with managers The coaches in the men’s team are often working in the academy and academy coaches work with the men’s team This is how we can utilize the same playbook with all our players.” “This integrated approach has three principal components One involves coaches who are part of a broader team are clear on expectations and can build on their existing knowledge of the system is an approach to player development that actively involves players in practices elicits feedback and tries to find solutions together when combined are part of a culture at Frölunda that permeates all aspects of the organization.” keep as many as possible in the sport for as long as possible and make hockey a life-long interest for them in that their goal isn’t to always win (although of course that’s in the plans) but to find players and make them fall in love with the sport As these young players learn to truly love the game the development aspect becomes a much easier task They want to continue to grow in the sport Another large part of their success on the ice and in development has been the hiring of head coach Roger Rönnberg after coaching the national team and the U20 team for a number of years He won two bronze medals and silver with the national men’s team and led the U20 team to a gold medal in 2012 and silver in 2013 he’ll tell me to coach the players and use the resources we have Rönnberg brings a great deal to the organization winning and very clear communication towards the players about what it takes to win This brings another level to the development process in creating a personalized development plan for each player and keeps the players involved the entire way Frölunda holds its culture and philosophy to the highest of standards and what they consider the basic skills: high-speed skating they ensure that they support their players every step of the way 82 players have been drafted into the NHL after playing for Frölunda the season before This doesn’t include players who play here after they’ve been drafted The organization acts as a “finishing school” for Swedish players and neighbouring countries’ players after being selected into the NHL Frölunda’s process is working and NHL teams have taken notice Frölunda has become a fixture on numerous NHL teams over the years Here are a few players that have stood out and represented Frölunda extremely well in the process While this may not be a name you recognize right away, Calle Johansson was an NHL veteran of 17 seasons He’s most known for his time with the Capitals He was drafted by the Sabres in 1985 as the 14th overall pick He was just the fourth player selected from Frölunda and second to go in the first round he was one of the most reliable defensemen in the league starting with his rookie season where he collected 42 points and was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team He sits second in Capitals history for games played and is in the top 10 for assists and points Johansson was the first in a long line of stellar defenders to come out of Frölunda The face of the Ottawa Senators for 17 seasons Daniel Alfredsson blossomed into one of the best players to ever come out of Frölunda The long-time captain of the Senators played 1,246 games in the NHL between Ottawa and the Detroit Red Wings He’s second all-time in Senators games played Often in consideration for many awards in the league winning the Calder Memorial Trophy as rookie of the year in 1995-96 the King Clancy Memorial Trophy in 2011-12 for leadership on and off the ice and humanitarian efforts and the Mark Messier Leadership Award in 2012-13 for leadership It shouldn’t be long before “Alfie” is in the Hockey Hall of Fame where he’ll be the first players drafted from Frölunda – but certainly not the last Another player that is destined for the Hockey Hall of Fame is New York Rangers’ goaltender Henrik Lundqvist The netminder has been a solid presence in net for the Blueshirts since he was drafted 205th overall in 2000 and broke out in 2005-06 He’s remained one of the best goalies in the league ever since his rookie season Like Alfredsson, Lundqvist has been in the conversation for awards his entire career – especially the Vezina Trophy, awarded to the league’s best goaltender. He won the award once, in 2011-12, and has twice been named to All-Star Teams. All-time, he’s in the top-10 for goaltender games played, wins, and top-20 for shutouts. He’s also played a Hall-of-Fame-worthy career. Another draftee of the Ottawa Senators, Erik Karlsson was taken 15th overall in 2008. Just like Alfredsson, he went on to become the face and captain of the franchise, leading the organization for nearly a decade before being traded to the San Jose Sharks He’s been one of the best defensemen in the league since coming in winning two Norris Trophies as the league’s best defender and being named to the All-Star Team four times He’s still in the middle of his career with lots of time left to further build his resume he’s a testament to Frölunda’s development process One last player of note is the organizations first and only first-overall pick in the NHL Draft. Rasmus Dahlin was selected with the top pick in 2018 by the Buffalo Sabres and is just starting to build what looks to be a very promising career he finished third in Calder Trophy voting but was named to the All-Rookie Team He looks to lead the way for the next generation of defensemen entering the league and has already proven that he is up to the task during his short time in the NHL Dahlin could very well be the best player to ever come out of Frölunda a few others that stand out are Alex Steen There are also many draftees who have yet to break into the league There’s also a number of very talented players available in the coming drafts Froölunda seems to have found the recipe for success Get the latest NHL Draft & Prospect rankings The Hockey Writers is a premier destination for news and information on everything hockey commentary and features from hundreds writers worldwide our articles are read millions of times every month The Swedish team will play their first game of the tournament tonight against Team Canada As some of their players are injured, Frölunda HC decided to hire two more forwards for the duration of the tournament. The first elimination round pitted them against Belarus team Yunost Minsk and the first game ended in a surprise 2-3 defeat for Frölunda and this game ended up becoming a wakeup call for the CHL Champions Frölunda hammered Minsk 5-0 and kickstarted a run of form that the CHL had never seen The Round of 16 and Quarter-Finals bore witness to four impressive performances from the Swedish side – Frölunda comfortably qualified for the Semi-Finals scoring 19 goals and only conceding four in the process Swiss side Fribourg-Gottéron, Frölunda’s Semi-Finals opponents were also no match for in-form Frölunda They won 5-1 at home and 4-0 on the road to book their place in the Final after one of the most prolific Playoff runs in CHL history But both Sparta’s and Frölunda’s seasons all came down to this final game Who would end up lifting the European Trophy as 2017 CHL Champions Tune in live tonight at 19:00 CET to watch the ultimate CHL Flashback game The rumors and reports regarding Egli's future employer indicated where he would play next season but it has now officially been confirmed.  Dominik Egli has signed a two-year contract with Frölunda HC valid until the end of the 2025-26 season. "It probably won't be easy at first but it will be exciting and hopefully I will grow as a player and a person One goal I have is to learn Swedish as quickly as possible," Egli said in a statement provided by the club.  He will not be the only Swiss playing for the organization Off the back of a tough first game loss, hosts Eisbären Berlin put on a spectacular second performance against Frölunda Gothenburg but couldn't topple them for a win at home It was a case of history repeating for Frölunda Gothenburg who kicked off Game Day 3 with another quick goal. Forward Jacob Nilsson opened up the scoring against the German hosts 1:29 into the period With the bitter taste of last game's defeat still lingering Berlin opted for a more physical style of play against the Swedes The hosts rounded out the first period with a relatively even number of shots on Both sides had an opportunity to test out their special teams, but couldn't light the lamp. Berlin netminder Juho Markkanen was a brick wall denying the team from Gothenburg who had four minutes of man-advantage play The second stanza saw Berlin turn the tables, netting the equaliser at 23:01. A long shot wristed in by blueliner Frank Hördler delivered a juicy rebound, and Marco Baßler wasted no time shovelling the loose puck past netminder Frederik Dichow Berlin were denied a 2-1 lead after a goal scored off a net-front scrum was called off instead Frölunda would get another two minutes of powerplay action The pendulum swung back hard for Berlin who managed to stave off the Swedes for two minutes only to have their rivals pick up goal number two. But retribution became a possibility for the German side after Petteri Lindbohm was sent to the bin for crosschecking. Forward Matthew White sent the crowd into a frenzy after he sniped the puck from what seemed to be an impossible angle over the shoulder of Dichow to equalise the game 2-2 With under four minutes remaining on the clock Berlin had a chance to take the lead but couldn't manage to net another before the period break Berlin faced the worst possible start to period three taking a 5-on-3 after two careless high-sticking penalties but the outstretched arms and legs of Markkanen kept the hosts in contention With 37 seconds remaining on the clock a bouncing puck off the backboards of Markkanen would see an unlucky bounce and the puck cross the line to put the Swedes up 3-2 and take their first win on the road.    Taken first overall in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft Rasmus Dahlin instantly became the core of the Buffalo Sabres defence Dahlin was the clear-cut number one in the draft and has since blossomed into one of the best young defenders in the league How did the Swedish defender get to this level he played with one of Europe’s premier teams: the Frölunda Hockey Club For more than a decade, Frölunda Hockey Club in the Swedish Hockey League has supported a startling number of top prospects drafted into the National Hockey League they have produced draft picks nearly every year including players like Daniel Alfredsson Frölunda has served as a finishing school of sorts and Lias Andersson. Dahlin is a next-level talent though The two are the latest in a long line of elite players who have played for the team Bexell has been covering Frölunda for some time Wheeldon discussed key questions with them about coaching young players and supporting the next generation of high calibre hockey players it can be seen that Frölunda’s success can be traced to three things: experienced and youth-focused coaching; a unique and personalized approach to player development; and a culture that permeates all aspects of the organization Vastra Frölunda hosted overseas opponents at Scandinavium the World Hockey Association champion Winnipeg Jets toured Europe and visited Gothenburg the NHL’s Washington Capitals and New York Rangers both made the trip it wasn’t until 1995-96 that Västra Frölunda began to emerge as the team that exists today They qualified for the first season of the new European Hockey League that year and lost to Dynamo Moscow in the semi-finals Frölunda rose to become a powerhouse in the 2000s it has played in the European Champions Cup and been a regular participant in the Nordic Trophy They are by far the most successful team through the start of the CHL they are poised to make it back-to-back championships yet again One way to understand Frölunda’s success is based on their integrated approach to player development all teams associated with the program could be hosted under the same roof This allows interactions between the coaches of different teams (U16 …coaches from both men’s team and the academies share information and communicate amongst themselves and with managers This is how we can utilize the same playbook with all our players Bexell notes that another aspect of this integrated approach is the dedicated Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Clinic Developed in collaboration with the soccer team IFK Göteborg the clinic ensures young players don’t overextend themselves and build muscle safely and as part of an overall training regime skating coaches work with physiotherapists to vary routines and drills to allow players to get more out of their stride This integrated approach has three principal components when combined are part of a culture at Frölunda that permeates all aspects of the organization Rönnberg was hired as head coach.Rönnberg was the head coach of the U20 Swedish Team and an assistant coach for the Swedish men’s national ice hockey team at the 2009 Rönnberg broke with Frölunda’s former approach of buying expensive players from other teams they began to look for young talent within Gothenburg’s youth teams It is an approach where the coaches work actively to give direct feedback on concrete behaviors Coaches focus on building skills and strengthening each player’s individual profile The basic idea is to support each player to become the best player they can be in the future Pär Johansson and named him the assistant and defensive coach. Together these coaches work both with the men’s team and in the academy He often mentions a “great hockey mind” when describing impressive young players His expectation is that his players have a full understanding of the game Rönnberg is looking for his team to drive and control the play This requires forwards to be prepared to cover the defender going forward and is one reason Frölunda is gaining a reputation for developing defensively responsible players Liljander describes the team’s mission as one designed to reach every player in whatever way resonates “We are constantly looking at how we get to know our players understand our player’s profile and their personality We tailor feedback tools to reach each player in ways they will respond to.” Rönnberg sees his role as one designed to support players and try to help them reach their full potential He told Patrik Bexell: “I am just a gardener tending my garden if I do everything right I get to reap the rewards.” We work toward a developing a physical profile and we utilize a modern playbook at both the men’s team and at the academy This occurs through daily guidance from our coaches and learning from their experiences on the ice… According to Bexell and former NHL/AHL players who have played with the team practice is harder in Frölunda than an NHL club this is due to the shorter 52 game schedule We practice to ensure our players are strong in key skills Only after we see this progression to focus on educating our players in our playbook we want the player’s individual brand and strength to be supported and developed to allow them to make a difference on the ice What is unique with Frölunda is the role of feedback Bexell observes that Rönnberg always explains the reason for a drill at practice He asks players whether the drill is realistic and consistent with what he calls a “match situation.” While in the end the coach decides the best course for the team they work hard to engage the players first The most important aspect of Frölunda’s success is the focus on working together to strengthen culture and common philosophy This connects back to the use of the same playbook throughout the organization but is also related to coaches working with players from an early age that informs the approach to player development there are a limited number of players in the SHL this requires coaches to be patient with talent if you approach player development as Frölunda does you are allowed more time and space to work with younger players Frölunda invited a young Dahlin to practice with the Men’s club When Dahlin outplayed the rest of the team Rönnberg reportedly said: “How many do we miss because we aren’t observant enough.” results are the byproduct of creating an environment where support and hard work helps each player to become the best they can be in the future We have many people who work hard every day with our players in the academy and on the men’s team This involves the every day hard work of coaching the players’ behaviors and getting the players to compete during every moment on the ice We try to push over their boundaries every day There may be more than hard work at play here are described as having more collectivist cultures These cultures emphasize group goals above individual needs and community norms and shared expectations As Victor Hedman observes, Swedish hockey culture is a “…total philosophy of community that starts when you’re young.” including the hockey “hero” or  “Man of the Match.” There is a lot of incentive to be the best each team’s leading scorer wears the “Golden Helmet.” Part of what Frölunda has done is find a way to build a team concept while emphasizing individualistic opportunities for player growth and development This means focusing on a player’s “individual brand and strength,” and deliberately focusing on “individual player development.” It means not treating players like replaceable cogs Basically everything is about hard work from everyone at Frölunda This is an approach that has proven to be very successful Frölunda has had 82 players drafted into the NHL to date the same number of players as the Czech Republic and Finland Dahlin is the poster boy of this program so far With how many talented prospects this program is able to produce though it might not be long before Dahlin is challenged for that title Luleå Hockey found twine twice in the second period and Frölunda Gothenburg scored once in the first and late in the third to even things at 2-2 heading into next week's Champions Hockey League Semi-Finals Return Game at Coop Norrbotten Arena The sides entered Tuesday's fixture having just faced each other three days prior with Frölunda coming away with a 5-2 victory Action paused near the seven-minute mark of the opening period when Frölunda made a temporary goalie change. Frederik Dichow entered the game due to Lars Johansson's broken skate blade Moments later, at the other end of the ice, the puck found the back of the net when Andreas Borgman roofed it over Matteus Ward's left shoulder with a beautiful backhand to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage skated through the right circle and lifted the puck from an impossible angle near the goal line to secure his second of the season Six minutes into the second, Brendan Shinnimin made it a 1-1 contest when Luleå cashed in on their third man-advantage of the night. An initial shot from Juhani Tyrväinen pinballed around in the crease before finding Shinnimin's stick who fired it into the back of the net The goal was briefly reviewed for goaltender interference but stood With less than five minutes to play in the middle stanza, the visitors extended their lead off of Joonas Rask's first of the season. The winger received a cross-ice pass from Olli Nikupeteri before sniping it far side from the top of the right circle beating Johansson's blocker and giving Luleå their first lead of the night A late surge by Frölunda almost made it a 2-2 game with two and half to go but upon review it was determined the puck never fully crossed the goal line With both sides skating four aside in the closing minutes of the third it was the home side lighting the lamp for their second of the night. Max Friberg controlled the puck along the boards before skating into the slot and wristing it over Ward's blocker to level the score at 2 Neither side managed to break through as the final horn sounded with both sides tied at a 2-2 aggregate Up next, Luleå will play hosts to Frölunda who will travel to northern Sweden next week for the Return Game trying to build its roster for the upcoming season.  According to the Expressen podcast 'Sanny & Svensson' Frölunda HC and Henrik Tömmernes are currently discussing a four-year contract for the 32-year-defenseman Veckans podd med bland annat:✅ https://t.co/Ep00xo5QP8 Frölunda och Tömmernes förhandlar om ett fyraårskontrakt enligt Johan Svensson i podden Intressant också att Frölunda varit och nosat på Harry Häman Aktell Tömmernes played several years for the SHL team before he joined Genève-Servette HC in 2018 the defenseman has recorded ten goals and 14 assists in 29 games for the Grenats Frölunda HC will no longer use their moniker They also aim to have a new logo in a year has decided to drop "Indians" from their name As part of this season's Champions Hockey League preliminary round, Frölunda will face the ZSC Lions on August 28 and September 4 Their other opponents are IFK Helsinki and BK Mladá Boleslav ( 20 August 2021 | esi | Report an error ) It’s not unfamiliar territory for the Frölunda Indians as they prepare for their fifth Champions Hockey League Final, as they take on first-time finalists Mountfield HK from the Czech Republic Frölunda are the most successful team in CHL history looking to make it a fourth on Tuesday night their journey to the title game hasn’t been as straight forward as you might have imagined Things got off to a very rocky start for the defending champions in Group H as they look on Mountfield, as well as the Cardiff Devils of Wales and Graz99ers of Austria Frölunda dropped their opening two games they had to come from behind against Graz to force overtime trailing 5-3 in the final 10 minutes of regulation with Ryan Lasch and Patrik Carlsson scoring twice to secure at least a point for Frölunda but they couldn’t get the extra point as Graz secured victory in a lengthy shootout This was followed up by another rocky game a regulation loss to their Final opponents Mountfield with a pair of powerplay goals by Rhett Rakshani being the only thing the reigning champions could muster in a 3-2 loss they managed to turn things around as they travelled to Austria and the Czech Republic for the return legs with a 5-1 win over Graz and narrow 4-3 win over Mountfield before they finished up their Group Stage in style with back-to-back 9-2 victories over Cardiff With the playoff matchups determined, much like the start of their Group Stage campaign, things got off to a less than ideal start for Frölunda, with a 6-3 loss against Färjestad Karlstad in a game they trailed right from the off after surrendering three goals in the first period but that was followed up with a fantastic display in the second leg as Frölunda showed their championship mentality with a huge 8-2 victory to secure their spot in the next round A common theme was developing for Frölunda, who once again trailed after the opening leg against EHC Biel-Bienne in a 3-2 loss but that just set the stage for a dramatic second leg one which nearly saw the side knocked out of the competition Frölunda responded away from home with another comeback with two third period goals from captain Joel Lundqvist and CHL All-Time top scorer Ryan Lasch securing a 5-4 aggregate victory and a fifth appearance in the Final for the Swedish giants with the two teams already facing off against each other in Group H action earlier this season and with each team picking up a win each against the other both Frölunda and Mountfield will have confidence that they can be crowned the winners of the 2019/20 Champions Hockey League where she joined Frölunda HC's successful women's venture last spring which means that they the lead the series by a large margin A goal difference of 106 goals scored and only three conceded also shows that the season has been successful so far One of the reasons why there was a move to Gothenburg and Frölunda HC was the University of Gothenburg and the opportunity to continue studying she is now studying the two-year master program in biology I did some research on GU and thought it would be perfect — I loved my ecology and evolutionary biology courses at Princeton and enjoyed doing my own research and thesis in my senior year After taking a couple years off from school during the pandemic I realized how much I missed learning A great opportunity popped up with Frölunda creating the first ever women’s squad so I did some research on GU and thought it would be perfect I am very interested in behavioural ecology but have enjoyed my time so far learning more about conservation biology so I hope I can combine the two in the future the way the courses are set up is different I'm used to taking about four courses at the same time Here I enjoy only having one course at a time and being able to really focus my energy on that particular course something I have noticed and really like about the Swedish biology courses is how often there is focus directed on local species and conservation projects in Sweden — Maybe if I took more courses in human biology or anatomy then maybe I could help my teammates in some way She says instead that she is very happy that there are not so many similarities This means she can “keep her academic brain far from her hockey brain”.  School becomes a break from hockey Do you want to know even more about Frölunda HC and Stephanie Neatby? Website designed by More Hot Leads Last night in a totally packed Scandinavium in Gothenburg, 12,400 fans saw Frölunda Indians take their third Champions Hockey League trophy in five years. The tie was a rematch of the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics quarterfinals between Germany and Sweden which saw the Germans stun the Swedes on their way to a surprise Silver medal. Several players from that game were present last night, including Frölunda and Sweden’s captain, Joel Lundqvist, one of Germany’s Assistant Captains that night, Patrick Hager as well as a Norwegian and a Canadian who suffered defeat at the Germans’ hand last year. But there would be no repeat victory for Germany’s Red Bull Munich, who were appearing in their first CHL final. The game provided end to end entertainment and had it not been for the skills of Indians’ keeper, Johan Gustafsson and Red Bull’s German Olympic hero, Danny aus den Birken in net the score would have been much higher. But in the end it would be penalties that decided with all four goals scored on the Power Play. First, Frölunda’s rising star, Samuel Fagemo found the net with a blistering shot at 10:32; then the competition’s top scorer, American Ryan Lasch netted at 24:16 to give the home team a 2-0 lead. As the game wore on Munich got more and more physical in their challenges as they tried to knock the Indians off their stride and find that little extra to get on the board. Unfortunately that meant that German Olympian, Yannic Seidenberg served 2+2 PIM for Checking to the Head on Frölunda’s Rhett Rahkshani at 33:50. The American left the ice and did not return and Seidenberg can count himself very lucky not to receive a Match Penalty for the dangerous challenge. Ponthus Westerholm took full advantage of as he came in to replace the injured 2006 New York Islanders drafted player on their first Power Play unit finding the net at 34:27. But typical of their attitude throughout the whole CHL, Munich refused to give up. Still with a man advantage, Red Bull pulled the keeper to make it six-on-four being instantly rewarded with a goal from another German Olympian, Yasin Ehliz who received the puck from none other than Seidenberg. So it was 3-1 at 51:29 - but there would no no late comeback for the visitors and that’s how it remained to the end of the game. The arena erupted as Frölunda’s players and fans celebrated wildly their third win in four final appearances in just five years. Stats which go to prove without doubt that they are the best European team in the CHL era. You can watch the CHL’s own match highlights below. Frölunda's success is what should be expected from a team that has NHL drafted players in almost every position. Strange then that the highest scorer in Total Points is the undrafted, 30 year old American, Ryan Lasch. With 17 Points (5G +13A) he is the highest scoring import player in the SHL, a title he has won the last two seasons he has been in Sweden. But the team's top goal scorer is another brother, captain, Joel Lundqvist, with seven as well as five Assists too. The team scored a full nine points with three home victories in the last three games before the international break. That included impressive wins against two of the other top team, Malmö Redhawks and Linköping HC. Surprisingly, none of the Frölunda team will be on international duty for Sweden, but the team will not get a break as such- they will have the first leg of a Champions Hockey League match against HC Lugano to play.
