#article-stream-0 .quote-embed .font-size p{font-size: 36px;}Lakeside walks in Växjö are just one of the ways to spend your time in Sweden’s greenest city
As soon as you arrive in Växjö (vek-quh) by train you realise something is different
A striking seven-story building brings together the Central Station and City Hall in a space defined by timber
Wood is everywhere—in the soaring structure
This is more than a transport hub or administrative center
it’s become known as the city’s public “living room,” showing that sustainability can be both innovative and inviting
Växjö—a much smaller city—has earned its reputation as Sweden’s greenest city
cutting CO2 emissions by more than 70% since the 1990s—now just a third of the EU average—while its population and economy have flourished
Växjö became the world’s first city to commit to becoming fossil-fuel-free in 1996
inspiring a global shift toward sustainable urban living
Nearly 90% of the city’s heating comes from renewable sources
primarily through its biomass-fueled district heating system
which converts waste wood from the surrounding sustainable forests into energy
Biogas-powered buses reducing reliance on fossil fuels
Urban planning in Växjö prioritises sustainability at every turn
from energy-efficient timber construction in new buildings to the creation of green corridors that promote biodiversity and connect the city’s parks and lakes
Växjö Cathedral was founded in the 1100s and is a major landmark of the city of Växjö
Cycling is actively encouraged with an extensive network of bike paths
and the city’s investment in eco-friendly walking routes around its lakes makes sustainability accessible and visible to residents and visitors alike
Those interested in urban planning or sustainable tourism are naturally drawn to Växjö
but the city offers plenty of attractions for any visitor with an eye for green innovation
From the timber Central Station and City Hall
which features eco-friendly walking and cycling paths framed by rich birdlife and scenic views
named after Sweden’s famed botanist Carl Linnaeus
provides another green retreat in the heart of the city
For a deeper dive into Växjö’s environmental legacy, visit Smålands Museum
which incorporates the Swedish Glass Museum
an exhibition space dedicated to showcasing the city’s sustainability efforts and inspiring future initiatives
it was glass that Växjö was known for long before its green credentials took centre stage
The city is part of the Kingdom of Crystal (Glasriket)
a region famous for its centuries-old glassblowing traditions
Exhibitions feature stunning glassworks and the craftsmanship that put the area on the map. Just a 30-mile drive away, you can explore the working glassworks of Kosta Boda
Växjö’s Swedish Emigrant Institute provides an intriguing look at the waves of migration that saw Swedes seeking new lives in America
with personal stories and artefacts bringing this era to life
Its soaring twin spires and modern stained-glass artwork reflect the city’s blend of tradition and innovation—a fitting metaphor for Växjö itself
and the area around Växjö offers a glimpse into this rich architectural and historical tradition
The ruin of Kronoberg Castle is an historic attraction close to the city of Vaxjo
a medieval ruin located on a small island in Lake Helgasjön dates back to the 15th century
The castle was originally built as a bishop’s residence but later became a fortress during Sweden’s wars with Denmark
with its crumbling stone walls and lake setting offering a sense of timelessness
Teleborg Castle offers visitors a fairytale experience just a short distance from downtown Växjö
Built in 1900 by Count Fredrik Bonde as a romantic gift for his wife Anna
the castle combines Neo-Renaissance and Gothic Revival styles
making it a striking sight by the shores of Lake Trummen
Foodies should try everything to reserve a table at PM & Vänner on Storgatan

Växjö set itself on a path to a new vision of green urban living
But that glassmaking heritage is now matched by changemaking: this compact city of fewer than 100,000 inhabitants has become a global beacon in the battle against climate change
Nearly a decade before Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg was even born
Växjö set itself on a path to a new vision of urban living that's now been emulated worldwide
all while the city has grown in population by a third and doubled its per capita GDP
local buses and council vehicles run on biofuel made from domestic household organic waste
is sourced from forestry by-products and other biomass
with plentiful material coming from the vast surrounding forests
This ranges from sawdust from local timber mills to branches left from tree-felling to make goods for IKEA – the global design giant born just a half hour train ride away in the town of Älmhult
The few CO2 emissions that linger in the air stem from personal car users who are still not taking advantage of one of Sweden's best provisions of electric car charging stations
plus places to fill up on non-fossil biofuels such as ethanol
Green Getaways is a BBC Travel series that helps travellers experience a greener
cleaner approach to getting out and seeing the world
has seen Växjö become perhaps the world's leading showcase for large-scale timber architecture
with half of all new builds required to be in wood
sourced from the same sprawling forests that once provided fuel to fire the glasswork furnaces
I arrive in Växjö by train and can't help but start snapping pictures of a station interior unlike any I've ever seen. Stepping off the platform, I enter a seven-storey edifice that hosts both the Central Station and Växjö City Hall
timber is used for both structure and decor in a calm
soaring space that also includes a tourist office
exhibition area and eye-catching artworks made from pale wood
It's such a welcoming space that it's been nicknamed the city's public "living room"
which tells the often revelatory story of Swedish mass emigration to North America
The museum enclave is also home to myriad relocated buildings from past centuries – I particularly like the windmill as a symbol of ancient green power
built from timbers painted the iconic Swedish shade known as Falu or Falun Red
named after its historic source from mines around the eponymous town
with contrasting crystalline creations placed along the cosmopolitan length of Sandgärdsgatan that runs through the heart of the city centre to the iconic double-spired cathedral
How to get there: A direct train from Copenhagen airport to Växjö takes 2.5 hours
Where to stay: Modern design hotel PM & Vanner balances luxury with good eco practice
Where to eat: The vintage decor at Kafe de Luxe celebrates stylish sustainable re-use. Galai offers upscale modern takes on superb Swedish produce in a chic
When to go: May-September for long days of Nordic sun and warmth
Here, I'm joined by Olivia Thim, a sustainability expert for property management firm Vöfab. "For a long time, we had the tallest wooden building in Sweden," Thim says
We just thought that we should try to build everything in wood first."
Also with us is architect Karin Hård Af Segerstad from leading Växjö practice Arkitektbolaget
who tells me about the super-strong cross-laminated timber (CLT) used for structural frames
augmented by cedar shaving facades and various interior woods
This swaddling in natural materials is as pleasing to the residents as it is to the eye
she says: “People report an improved sense of well-being living surrounded by wood."

• How the youngest Canary Island escaped mass tourism
Växjö's showcasing of innovative timber builds has been a valuable learning curve
"People weren't so knowledgeable about wooden high-rise buildings
so we have close collaboration with the local university," says Segerstad
This includes sensors within buildings to record how the structures perform over years and changing seasons
"Now we have researchers coming from around the world," she continues
We have become world pioneers to build in wood
Aesthetic principles are as important as ecological ones."
Arkitektbolaget is building a new wooden Vias Chapel just outside the city that will provide a 21st-Century echo of Sweden's oldest wooden building
A visit to the 800-year-old Granhults Church proves not just the durability of wood
but also how well it works as a medium for art
An ornately painted interior is as ravishing in its own way as Rome's Sistine Chapel
while burnished medieval wooden carvings of various godly figures sit alongside humble timber furnishings
Meanwhile, at modern design hotel PM & Vanner
including produce from the hotel's own garden – while dishes are cleaned using an energy- and water-saving dishwasher
and the hotel is also part of an innovative textile recycling system
I walk around the wood-decorated offices of local power generator VEAB with CEO Erik Tellgren
who tells me how forest and wood product "waste" taken from around Växjö easily provides all the electricity requirements of the city
in a manner that also helps the battle to mitigate climate change
The travel emissions it took to report this story were 0.35 metric tons of CO2e. Find out more about how we calculated this figure here
"Forest residues left to decompose generate CO2," says Tellgren. "So, using it up helps cut emissions." And, he adds, the ash produced from the burned wood is returned to the forest floor as an excellent compost
He smiles as he recalls how Växjö's first power plant
which fired up here beside the lake in the 1880s
the town is again relying on the material as it leads the world away from fossil fuels
and now we come back to it again," he says

A mishandled pass at the point allowed Lajunen to scoop the puck up in the neutral zone as he powered his way past a pair of defenders before sliding the puck five-hole
But just over two minutes later, the Swedes reclaimed their three-goal cushion when Dylan McLaughlin dished a cross-crease feed to Manuel Ågren who slid the puck back door to make it 5-2 on aggregate with one period left to play
3-on-3 play followed in the extra session where Lajunen nabbed his second of the night to complete the comeback as Växjö saw their season come to an end in the Quarter-Finals for a second consecutive season

has grown a reputation as “a living research area” to test different construction materials and building solutions
Wood designed buildings have been a major part of the movement which is why the municipality of 100,000 residents has been nicknamed Timber City
a hefty moniker in a country known as a world leader in wood construction
who works at Växjö’s Linnaeus University in institutional management focusing on forestry
said the city has come a long way from its environmental roots in the 1970s
a WoodWorks conference recently in Toronto
highlighting the city’s shift to sustainable building practices primarily through using wood (mass timber in particular) as a building material
Years ago Växjö’s government officials developed a strategy in which future housing models
he told the seminar audience at George Brown College’s Waterfront Campus
The city required at least 50 per cent of all new buildings to be constructed using wood-frame technology
The shift to wood resulted in a training regime within the industry and the municipality to understand the products as well as issues such as procurement
From there the municipality established policy regulations
The municipality required wood project developers to collaborate with other developers and Linnaeus University to help grow the knowledge pool of new technologies
By 2003 Växjö had one of its first major wood multi-residential buildings and in 2005 the city initiated a multi-family wood buildings strategy called More Wood in Construction
Since then it has seen a number of prefabricated mass timber highrise housing projects
including one with a façade of untreated spruce
Currently Växjö’s main driver to buildings is through a sustainable model
“Wood-based building solutions are a given solution in that,” he told the audience
While Växjö has drawn visitors from around the globe to view its mass timber residences
he said no building tour should miss the showpiece: city hall and the rail station which are combined under one roof
A striking glass seven-storey façade formed into the shape of a ship
the municipal/rail complex is constructed with a mass timber structure of CLT and glulam
Lindblad said regardless of the city and country’s political stripes over the past four to five decades
environmental responsibility has factored into the development equation
“It has benefitted the development of sustainable construction or wood construction.”

It was planned to celebrate Växjö diocese’s 850-year anniversary in 2020
but finally the celebrations have taken place
It was a great delight to visit Växjö with the Revd Canon Richard Lamey to take part in the celebrations in September
I am a member of the Oxford - Växjö Diocesan Link Committee so this was not my first visit and I have long been a fan of diocesan and parish links with churches in other parts of the world
All dioceses in the Church of England are encouraged to have more than one diocesan link
Haven’t we got enough to do in our own little part of the world
can give us a new perspective on our own beliefs and the outworking of our faith
but clear differences due to our history and our current contexts
either in person or through the wonders of Zoom that the reality of being part of the one
holy catholic and apostolic Church hits home
As separate entities whether at diocesan or parish level we can feel quite fragile
but together we are part of something so much greater
Our unity in Christ overrides any differences when we pray together; the opportunity to discuss our differences can enrich us and also challenge us
Even if we never visit another country our links can inform our intercessions and our understanding of the church and the world
Our recent visit to Växjö gave us the opportunity to visit both urban and rural parishes
We were able to meet for conversation and food in clergy homes as well as in the aptly named “Bishops Arms” close to Växjö Cathedral
We found parishes wanting to form a link with a parish in the Diocese of Oxford
The parish of St Paul’s Wokingham has had a link with the parish of Mariakyrkan in Växjö for about seven years
Richard Lamey has come back from our visit with renewed enthusiasm for this parish link
describing it as one of the best things they do as a parish:
“Generosity and hospitality are at the heart of a link
Our link teaches us more about God’s welcome and God’s inclusion and God’s call to be hospitable

the ice opened up when both sides were called for matching minors
but neither club was able to capitalise on the opportunity as they returned to their respective locker rooms with Sheffield leading in shots 11-8
Late in the period, Colton Saucerman was called for high-sticking
awarding Växjö their third powerplay
but Sheffield continued their excellent play on the PK to maintain their one-goal lead heading into the final stanza
Just as the period began and their powerplay expired, it was the Swedish side evening things up again when Filip Eriksson tipped home a shot from the point at 40:19. The play would be challenged for offsides but would be upheld.
Still level at 2-2 after 60 minutes, extra time was needed to decide the winner and with less than 20 seconds remaining in OT, it was Vallerand firing it from the slot past Larmi to earn his club their historic win and those all-important points.

But with a comeback win, this is hopefully the start of a turnaround that will culminate with another positive result in the Return Game of the series later in December.
"It was a really fun game," noted Växjö Head Coach Jörgen Jönsson after the game, "there was a lot of action and I think we stood up well."
The Swedes played very well on the road, displaying a disciplined and controlled game which saw them outshot and ultimately outscore the home team.
Despite producing 1.45 Expected Goals (lower than Sparta's 1.58), the Swedish visitors were active in front of the home team net and had many more chances aside from the two they converted on. Is that a shame given they have just a slim one-goal lead in the aggregate-scoring series?
"You always want to score more," admitted Jönsson, "but we were up against a really good goalie and sometimes you just can't get the pucks in."
"It's a tighter rink than we are used to here as well," he also added.
Scoring has been a larger issue for Växjö recently:"Domestically we are struggling with scoring a little bit, but we are playing well."
"We scored two today and let's hope we can build on that in the Return Game," concluded the Head Coach.
The Return Game between the Växjö Lakers and Sparta Prague will be played on Tuesday, 17 December at 19:00 CET in the Vida Arena.

Ilves Tampere hosted the Växjö Lakers at the Nokia Arena in Finland in their final game of the Champions Hockey League Regular Season
With the visitors already securing a Playoff spot and the home team unable to qualify even with a regulation win
this encounter was about finishing strong and proud for Ilves and about picking up some all-deciding points for their Regular Season total for Växjö
as Ilves wrapped up their season (rather surprisingly) with a shutout victory
The home team got off to a fantastic start, scoring on their first shot just 26 seconds into the opening period. Ville Meskanen fired a perfectly placed shot from the right face-off circle
adding a second goal at 5:29 on the powerplay following a tripping penalty
Ondřej Kos was the scorer
capitalising on a loose puck after the Växjö goaltender failed to secure it
Though Växjö controlled the play in the second half of the period
leaving Ilves 2-0 up as the teams headed to the locker rooms for the first time of the evening
The second period was filled with chances for both sides, but only one goal was added. At 33:30, Šimon Stránský scored on the powerplay from the right face-off circle to make it 3-0
Växjö had several good opportunities
particularly in the final minute of the period
when they had a man advantage due to a holding penalty
but they couldn't find the back of the net
though both teams created scoring chances throughout the final 20 minutes
ending their 2024/25 season on a high note without conceding a goal
while Växjö end their season on 10 points from six games
The Växjö Lakers orchestrated their first full points of this year's Champions Hockey League with a 3-1 win over Eisbären Berlin
Special teams came through in a big way for the Swedes who cashed in on two of their six opportunities to secure the victory
A shift in momentum occurred as the puck dropped for the second and Växjö found themselves with the man-advantage for the first time on the night
which ranked fourth in powerplay conversion last season
gave Växjö their first lead of the night.
Both sides would take a pair of penalties to close out the period
but no more damage was done as the clubs entered the third stanza nearly identical in the shot department
with Berlin's 19 to Växjö's 18
while the Swedes maintained their one-goal lead
Early in the third, the hosts saw their lead increase to two goals when a redirection from Dennis Rasmussen found its way into the back of the net 51 seconds into the final period. The 34-year-old skated to the top of the crease where he tipped home a Joachim Blichfeld feed to bring the score to 3-1
Still trailing by two with five minutes to go
Berlin continued to try and claw their way back into it
but the Växjö did an excellent job of keeping their opponents' high-danger chances to a minimum
Åhman made several brilliant saves and managed to stop 27 of 28 shots to earn a sparkling 94.74 SV% and help his team to their first victory
The Växjö Lakers engineered their third regulation win in four starts, defeating Storhamar Hamar to the tune of 4-1 to claim 10 out of a possible 12 points through the first games of the 2024/25 Champions Hockey League campaign
Shots were 11-5 in favour of the visitors following the first 20 minutes with both clubs going on the man-advantage twice
The visitors gave themselves some insurance at 49:16. Victor Stjernborg took a pass from Elias Rosén
threaded the needle past the intended shot blocker and shot one down low
just inside the post to add to the hosts' deficit
Storhamar were dealt another blow moments later when Andreas Martinsen was called for a five-minute major
The ensuing powerplay would be a back-breaker for the Norwegians as Växjö added another tally to their total. Blichfeld cleaned up a rebound after Stensrud fought off Félix Robert's initial shot to make it 4-1 with a little less than five minutes to go
The home side would go on the powerplay in the dying seconds of the period attempting to close the goal difference
as this one wrapped up in favour of the Swedish side with Storhamar's two-game point streak coming to an end
I have been a regular at the Ara Harakeke parkrun
Sweden to start a new job for two years at Linnaeus University
There are 11 parkruns in Sweden and I fortunately live close to Växjösjön parkrun
The mid Autumn weather was warm and sunny at Växjösjön parkrun this morning
The parkrun course starts close to Actic Simhallen and follows anticlockwise around the lake
and many art installations around the lake to view while on the run
My favorite art installations include “Spegelbollen”
From the start line runners turn right on the path towards the lake and right again
The path follows behind the pool and meets another path near the startline for photo opportunities
Following the boardwalk towards Växjö city centre runners pass a fountain on the left which is lit at night in many colours
Following the track away from the city centre
though the weather is beginning to get colder towards mid Autumn
as it winds back with a slight uphill section towards the finish
Today, I crossed the finish line in 31:05, Växjösjön parkrun is small and relies on a dedicated team of regular volunteers. The group is friendly and joining parkrun is a good way to meet new people.
This week 141 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 19 were first timers and 19 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 14 different clubs took part.
The event was made possible by 18 volunteers:
Stephen GLASSEY • Terry HOPE • Rob JENKINS • Simon DERBYSHIRE • Sue CUTHBERTSON • N U TANG • David SINKINS • Robyn SHARMA • Benjamin POWLEY • Nicole HODGSON • Kath O'CONNOR • Tim WHITEHEAD • Jethro STEPHENSON • Harry SHARMA • Lisa MCGRATH • Kathryn OIJORDSBAKKEN • Eirik OIJORDSBAKKEN • Mark EVANS
Today's full results and a complete event history can be found on the Ara Harakeke parkrun Results Page.
Ara Harakeke parkrun started on 10th December 2022. Since then 1,797 participants have completed 10,980 parkruns covering a total distance of 54,900 km, including 1,706 new Personal Bests. A total of 278 individuals have volunteered 1,633 times.

After the successes of previous years, England Athletics will be returning to Sweden for the Växjö Throws International 2025.
A strong team of 15 throwers have been selected to represent their country against athletes from Sweden, Iceland and Norway. The England team is made up of athletes aiming for a spot in the European Under 20 and Under 23 Championships this summer.
"Congratulations to all the selected throwers, along with their personal coaches and support teams. We’ve assembled a strong group of throwers who are eager to perform in what promises to be an exciting, inspiring, and exceptional event."
The competition, which features indoor javelin and discus events alongside the traditional shot put, offers a unique and rare challenge. It's crucial to provide our pathway throwers with international competitions and learning opportunities like this one.
"The experiences they gain as part of teams like this will equip them with the knowledge, skills, and experience needed for future age group and senior championships."
Team Captains are Isabelle Stamp and Dillon Claydon.
It takes a lot of people to put facilitate a trip like this so Katie would like to thank Felicity Dawes, Lewis Capes, Mike Martin and Vicky Griffiths for their hard work behind the scenes during the selection process and through the upcoming team coach roles.
Swedish police continue to investigate the motives of the perpetrator who carried out a shooting at an adult education center in Örebro, located in central Sweden, approximately 200 km west of Stockholm. The attack resulted in 10 deaths.
The shooter's name has not been officially disclosed, however, according to Swedish public broadcaster SVT, he was identified as 35-year-old Rickard Andersson.
Local media report that he led a reclusive lifestyle, lived nearby, and had a firearms license. He had no criminal record, and in recent years he had not declared any income.
This incident became the deadliest school shooting in Swedish history. The attacker himself is among the deceased.
Sweden remains one of the countries with a high rate of firearm-related deaths. The details of the tragedy continue to be investigated, but at this point, this is the information that is known.

the southern Swedish city became the first in the world to declare its intention to become fossil-fuel free
and does Växjö offer a blueprint for bigger cities too
Within minutes of meeting the mayor of Europe’s self-proclaimed greenest city
it is clear where he draws much of his inspiration from
It’s not just the fact that 61-year-old Bo Frank is wearing a black Beatles T-shirt and has a Beatles badge pinned to the lapel of his jacket
When he shows me into his office on the ground floor of Växjö city hall
Fab Four memorabilia is everywhere you look – along with photos of Sweden’s king and queen
and a black-and-white sketch of himself with long hair and a flowered shirt from when he was first elected to Växjö (pronounced Veck-Ruh) city council 41 years ago
but Frank has lost none of his Beatles-era idealism as he steers this small southern Swedish city (population 89,000) to becoming fossil-fuel free by 2030 – a target the council
becoming the first city in the world to do so
Frank signs off his emails with the final lyric from The End on 1969’s Abbey Road: “The love you take is equal to the love you make” – and the line also appears on some of the council’s green bumpf
“Each citizen must contribute,” he says by way of explanation
“You can’t just blame others and expect them to do something
You have to start with yourself: the way you purchase
Demand is very important to making change.”
with CO2 emissions of 2.8 tonnes per resident
is now aiming to steal a march on Växjö and become fossil-fuel free by 2025 – but for the moment is further behind in its energy transition
Frank puts his city’s success down to the fact that in Sweden
income tax revenues go directly to municipal councils which have huge discretion over how they are spent – and the eight political parties
have over the years been united about the green agenda
You could say there are eight green parties.”
which is mostly powered by hydro and nuclear
Touring the city-owned power plant, Veab
a local variation on another Beatles lyric comes to mind as we watch giant articulated lorries tip out their dual payloads of woodchip: “Isn’t it good
three of these lorries will be needed an hour to keep Växjö warm
lorries come from within a 80-100 km radius of the city

Photograph: John McConnico/API have always had niggling doubts about the sustainability of biomass – shouldn’t trees be left to absorb CO2
rather than releasing it when chopped down and burned for energy
Mattila explains that Veab uses only the branches and tops of the trees that are sent to local paper mills or to Ikea to be turned into furniture (nearby Älmhult is the birthplace and headquarters of the retail giant)
Otherwise that biomass might be left to rot
a much more potent greenhouse gas than CO2
ash from burnt wood is returned to the forest to fertilise the soil
says the economics also stack up: “One of the advantages is biomass is a much cheaper fuel than fossil fuels.” Wood is also clean-burning
with no sulfur dioxide emissions and minimal particulate matter
expects to see its nitrous oxide emissions drop to zero as well
which had argued that it was uncompetitive to lock 500 house buyers of a new development into one energy supplier

over dinner at a cosy organic food restaurant
Björkmarker explains the importance of the city winning this battle
adding 1,100 people a year and providing temporary accommodation for hundreds of asylum-seekers from the likes of Syria and Afghanistan
Expanding the district heating network to meet any new demand is critical to meeting its climate targets: “There is no other heating alternative that can ever
The expanding population is also impeding the city’s struggle to rein in transport emissions
the biggest challenge by far to its fossil-fuel free ambition
Of the 2.4 tonnes of CO2 Växjö’s residents emitted in 2014
Björkmarker explains that the city is spread over a 30km area
and attracts workers who live as far as an hour’s drive away
All municipal buses run on biogas from its food waste
but the city’s focus is on increasing the uptake of cycling by expanding its already extensive cycle routes
and promoting electric bicycles and electric cars
Driving me around in one of the city’s green-fuel fleet the next day
Frank returns to Veab to show me the electric car refuelling station
where taxi driver Lars Göranson is filling up his newly delivered Tesla
“I am so proud of this because it is locally produced
Next stop is a city-run nursery school in a new suburb called Vikaholm, where most buildings are made entirely of wood and many to passive house standards – so energy-efficient that their occupants’ body heat is enough to keep them warm
The nursery school is where Växjö begins grooming its green citizens of the future
and how to value nature during frequent outings in the nearby forest
I’m not sure that the pint-sized patrons of Vikaholm nursery are with him on this point. Every Wednesday the children get to vote for their own meals and they are tucking into pasta and meat sauce, their favourite. Chef Nathalie Johansson says vegetarian options are mainly Quorn-based, masquerading as chicken.
There are other hints of resistance to Växjö’s centrally planned green revolution during my 24 hours in the city. One young resident of a passive house apartment grumbles about having to open windows to cool it down at times: “We have a thermostat but it doesn’t seem to matter what I put it on.”
a group of 6,612 European cities that have pledged to go further than the EU on climate protection
Frank has fond memories of the Beatles era and the radicalism of the 1970s – but he is even more excited about the coming environmental battle
I didn’t even feel there was life after 1984 [George Orwell’s dystopic book],” he says
We have the knowledge of what to do and we have the techniques to do it
It’s all about politicians being brave enough to take decisions – and mayors are doing a better job than national governments on climate protection

A stable base of talent could see an NHL team make a safe call on a defenceman on day two
offensive-minded defenceman from Sweden in this year’s draft class
This time the top Swedish prospect is from Växjö Lakers
and Leo Sahlin Wallenius will be expecting to hear his name called sometime during the second round of the 2024 NHL Draft
This is something different for Swedish prospects
as this age group isn’t as strong as it usually is
The players from the Swedish system who will go in the first round will hail from Norway (Michael Brandsegg-Nygard) and Czechia (Dominik Badinka)
will challenge Sahlin Wallenius to be the first picked Swede this year
however it speaks volumes that both are only expected to go in the second round
The foundation of Sahlin Wallenius’s game lies in his skating
but essentially he is more of a jack-of-all-trades rather than king of one
The team that callas his name will get a solid prospect that will be a good hockey player
The question will be if he can find that one area of the game to excel in and become an NHL blue-liner down the line
2006Shoots: LeftPosition: DefenceHeight: 6′0″Weight: 183 lbs.Team: Växjö Lakers (U20)
He led his defence in Växjö with 42 points (11G
coming in second to Färjestad’s Noel Fransén over the season
but earned two more points in the playoffs to draw even over the season
Sahlin Wallenius played heavy minutes for Växjö U20 team and relied on safe positional and transitional play
There isn’t a lot of anything (positive or negative) that sticks out for the player
and this means that it is difficult to gauge a role in an NHL lineup in the future
and turn thanks to his excellent edge-work
The edges also helps him accelerate quickly both with and without the puck
something that benefits his transitional play and his one area of the game where he really stands out
He thrives in a Hawaii hockey situation where the game flows back-and-forth and defence is optional thanks to his skating
It is in those situations that you can see something promising
Axel Sandin-Pelikka or Rasmus Dahlin who all thrived in similar situations
he needs to build up muscle to be more stable in the defensive zone
but it isn’t up there with the best either
I hold this as something negative because he will have to think the game at a quicker pace to maximize his transition game
Dobber Prospects: #30Elite Prospects: #29Hockey Prospect: #35McKeen’s: #31FC Hockey: #40NHL Central Scouting: #7 (European skaters)Corey Pronman (The Athletic): #21Scott Wheeler (The Athletic): #27
There are a couple of things that gives him upside
For me personally I like that he is in the Växjö system where structure is at the core of development
It should benefit him to be a bit more organized and maybe the structure can teach him when to go forward and trust his instincts
and when to rely on his partner rather than play it too safe
The fact that he will be drafted out of a European league means that his NHL organization will have four years to figure out what to do with him
In a way I see Sahlin Wallenius as a very safe pick
He will become a professional hockey player
Where he ends up will be dependent on if the development teams in Växjö and his draft team can unlock hidden areas and develop them into grade A/B assets
The Växjö Lakers were founded in 1997 after the former Växjö Hockey Club went out of business
The club first started playing in the 1997/98 season starting in Division 4
four divisions below today's top-tier SHL
Växjö worked their way up to HockeyAllsvenskan (2nd tier league) within six years
The club then spent eight seasons in HockeyAllsvenskan
during which they missed out on qualifying for the SHL three times
Växjö were finally promoted to Sweden's top tier in 2011
the Lakers reached the SHL playoffs for the first time and in 2014/15
Since then, Växjö have won the SHL three more times
The club originally played its home games at the Växjö Ishall
they moved to the newly built Vida Arena where they play to this day
They have played in seven Champions Hockey League seasons and made it all the way to the Final in 2018
where they narrowly missed out on the title to Finnish rivals JYP Jyväskylä
They played in last season's CHL where they cruised through the six-game Regular Season as the only unbeaten team
finishing in second place in the Regular Season Standings, and made it to the Quarter-Finals

Supreme skating ability is the basis of Freij’s good defensive play and even better offensive skills
Whereas Leo Sahlin Wallenius is a safe pick without much upside (at the moment)
Freij was the only defenceman that provided any real offence for Sweden in the World Under-18 Championship where he recorded six points (2G
His offence has a solid foundation of spatial awareness
and everything is aided by his exceptional skating
The one thing that stands out is his defence which sits a step below his offensive play
but that’s something that he will get to work on at a higher level this upcoming season as the Växjö Lakers have already agreed to loan him out to Björklöven in HockeyAllsvenskan
He will play professionally against men rather than spend another year with the U20 team in Växjö
2006Shoots: LeftPosition: DefenceHeight: 6′1″Weight: 196 lbs.Team: Växjö Lakers (U20)
and Freij might be the best skating defenceman in the whole draft class
He uses his speed and quick turns to shift direction quickly
causing opponents to look lost as he passes them with ease
finding the right passing and shooting lanes most of the time
Freij has a good shot that he can use with deception
His team will rely on him in the offensive zone and on the power play for those abilities
Combine this with good vision and a good hockey IQ on the offensive side of the game
and it is easy to see why he gets as many points as he does in the U20s
his skating benefits him both in regard to retrievals and zone exits
and he projects quite well at a higher level in both those areas
It is interesting that one can have a strong hockey IQ at one end of the rink but lose it at the other end
As easy as Freij sees the ice in the opponent’s end is as difficult as he finds it covering angles and lanes in his own
The good thing is that if you have one and work on the other
but this is clearly the area that he needs to work on
The problem for me is that Björn Hellkvist
usually lets players work on what they are good at (see Mattias Norlinder and Emil Heineman) rather than what they need to improve upon.
He wants to shoot and sometimes struggles to change his thought process
This leads to situations where he shoots into coverage
the positive outweighs the negative in regards to this
but it is something to follow closely as he moves to the professional ranks
Dobber Prospects: #26Elite Prospects: #37Hockey Prospect: #27Hadi Kalakeche: #21McKeen’s: #19Bob McKenzie (TSN): #41FC Hockey: #43NHL Central Scouting: #13 (European skaters)Corey Pronman (The Athletic): #83Scott Wheeler (The Athletic): #39
It is easy to compare Freij to teammate Sahlin Wallenius; and to follow that line you do get a bigger and better skater in Freij
I would also want to point out that Freij’s offence is better and there is a clear pro game in him with that in mind
but Freij has better retrievals and his skating helps him with zone exits
Växjö has been able to secure a loan to a professional team next year
something that they haven’t done for Sahlin Wallenius
again something to hold in Freij’s favour
Freij also reminds me a lot of Filip Broberg
who’s had a good playoff run in the NHL this year
and Freij can look to that development curve — slow and steady rather than being throw into the deep end — as his path to success
but it has a better chance of being in the NHL due to the offensive talents he possesses

The Växjö Lakers will be making their third appearance in the Quarter-Finals as the Swedes sailed past ERC Ingolstadt by a 7-4 score on aggregate
They will be returning to this leg of the competition for the first time since the 2017/18 campaign
Ingolstadt would go on to secure one of their own when Maury Edwards redirected a point shot from Philipp Krauß to make it a 5-2 game on aggregate
Krauß corralled the puck at the blue line before wristing it through traffic where Edwards was able to get his stick on it and give the visitors some life
Period number two saw a much improved performance from the visitors, with Ingolstadt going on the powerplay twice during the middle frame. But a lack of finish continued to haunt the Germans as they were unable to secure a second tally despite creating several solid opportunities. Brandon Kozun was centimeters away from adding to his side's score but wound up firing it off the near post
and after 40 minutes it was all square in the shots department with 15 attempts apiece
Still trailing by two late in the period, the Germans opted to pull their netminder but Växjö managed to stave off their push and would eventually seal the game with an empty-netter from Ludvig Nilsson
a tightly contested third came to a disappointing end for an Ingolstadt team that had their chances throughout but were unable to convert as the Swedes will move on
Ahead of the start of the upcoming Champions Hockey League season, we asked the Head Coaches of the Växjö Lakers' six Regular Season opponents what their thoughts are on the Swedish team - here's what they had to say
EHC Biel-Bienne Head Coach Petri Matikainen: “The story of this club is like no other in European hockey
they started in the Swedish fourth division – the 6th tier of professional hockey in Sweden
Year by year they made their way up to the SHL by 2011
they’ve spent 12 seasons in the SHL and have won 4 titles
They have become a powerhouse in Swedish hockey
Their line-up is full of very good players
who was the assistant coach in Davos in 2021/22
It will be a real challenge for us to go to their arena and try and get a good result.”
Rapperswil-Jona Lakers Stefan Hedlund: “The Växjö Lakers are the Swedish champions and a very good team
Vaxjö’s style of play is a mix between trapping and forechecking and they have a good goalie in Emil Larmi
who had a phenomenal run in the playoffs last season.”
Lahti Pelicans Head Coach Tommi Niemelä: “The reigning Swedish champions have an excellent team with good players that play a fast and versatile game.”
Stavanger Oilers Head Coach Anders Gjøse: “Last season’s SHL champions
Good mix of pressure and balance - an experienced team that play with possession.”
ERC Ingolstadt Head Coach Mark French: “It will be a great opportunity to welcome the Swedish champions to Ingolstadt
They have been very successful in the past ten years
and this will be a unique challenge for us.”

The Växjö Lakers claimed their seventh victory, defeating ERC Ingolstadt 4-1 to take the First Game of this Round of 16 series
Four different skaters scored for the Swedes who had no trouble finding the net and secured a three-goal aggregate lead heading into their Return Game next week
The visitors were buzzing as puck dropped in period one where the Swedes showcased their first-ranked offence by tallying two in the opening 20 minutes
corralled it to his forehand and wristed it past the Ingolstadt netminder
continued to push the pace and went on to score their third and fourth goals a little over two minutes apart
it was Ingolstadt still playing catch up as the Germans were unable to muster many quality scoring chances
Third period action saw the hosts enjoying the lion's share of puck possession as they had their legs going early
it was Växjö's structured play going to work
frustrating the Germans' chances as they maintained their three-goal advantage
Åhman continued to do his part with the netminder turning aside several grade-A opportunities including a breakaway attempt and with Ingolstadt opting to skate with six attackers late in the period
the onus was on the home side to try and close the gap before the final buzzer
But it was not to be as Ingolstadt fell for a fourth consecutive time
and now trail on aggregate as they prepare to travel to Sweden next week
was in trouble last year when local politicians and The Swedish Emigrant Institute (the national organization behind the House of Emigrants) fought over how to develop the business
last year was a turbulent period but we’re slowly coming out of it now,” says Director of Utvandrarnas Hus
“Växjö Kommun didn’t want to pay money to us solely
but wanted to create a separate corporation
to which our board of directors said ‘no.’” Today Utvandrarnas Hus has a new board of directors and has received several grants from
Barbro Osher’s Pro Suecia Foundation and Riksbanken
Utvandrarnas Hus nestles near a picturesque lake in the heart of Växjö
Here anyone who is interested in genealogy can trace their family
but it is also an important center for academics
“This is a huge tourist attraction of course,” says Hansson
Swedish-Americans as well as other nationalities coming from near and far
One goal is to get people up in the archives; we’re working on breaking that barrier.”
which in turn can yield important discoveries
“The Swedish emigration to America is the most important part of what we do
but I also don’t think that part can ever be threatened
And it’s always interesting to look at our kinds of emigration
because they all help us understand emigration in general as well as the immigration we have to Sweden today,” says Hansson
Most of us know of Karl-Oskar and Kristina
and perhaps that’s how we associate Swedish emigration
but Lars Hansson wants to shine a light on other emigrants
“At the same time as Karl-Oskar and Kristina
there was also a huge urban emigration to the U.S
as well as a wave of Swedes emigrating to Denmark and Germany
These were poorer people who were picked up by agents
The girls from the farms in Sweden had red-and-white kerchiefs on their heads —that’s how the agents recognized them once they stepped off the boat in Copenhagen
But these kerchiefs were quickly changed to hats
as Danish women were embarrassed to be seen with their maids unless they wore proper hats
they were looked down upon; it was said they had gotten ‘bad habits’ abroad
People were most certainly jealous of these girls who returned in expensive headgear
Of the Swedes who emigrated to the United States
Another lesser-known emigration is the one from America to Sweden when Ford and General Motors had factories in Stockholm
Continues Hansson: “The cars were put together here in Sweden and more than likely
but there were probably some Americans in the batch
depends a lot on national and transatlantic collaborations
“We work with the Swedish-American Center in Karlstad and the Swenson Center located at Augustana College in Illinois
We also have a lot of projects outside of Växjö
one is an exhibition that opens in Östergötland on Swedish woodmen working in Canada
and in July the exhibition ‘Det Nya Landet’ will open in Eksjö
Hansson explains that all exhibitions focus on emigration research
“It’s important for us to attract academics,” he says
“because we learn from history and understand today’s immigration from it
I also foresee us working more together with educational sections like ABF (Arbetarnas bildningsförbund or the Workers Educational Association)
is to create an Utvandrarnas Hus that functions much more on a national basis
I realize just how interested people are in Utvandrarnas Hus.”
· The Swedish Emigrant Institute was founded in 1965
Its initial purpose was to preserve records
interviews and memorabilia relating to the period of major Swedish emigration between 1846 and 1930
when 1.3 million (about 20%) of the Swedish population left the country
only England and Norway surpassed Sweden’s emigration in proportion to the population of the home country
· Swedes settled down in cities and helped develop the industry
They played an important role in building certain cities
was surpassed by Chicago’s population of first and second generation Swedes
· 61 % of the Swedish-born Americans lived in cities in 1910
The labor market of the big city had more to offer the poor immigrants than the farm regions
A great number of them worked in the building industry
There is a saying that "the Swedes built Chicago."

The 4-0 win in regulation is the fourth straight win for the reigning SHL champions, who had three of their four lines producing goals. Kalle Kossila managed another solid game netting three points (1G
while teammate Emil Larmi made 28 perfect saves to collect his first shutout of the CHL season
The Swedes had sensational control in the zone which would see them draw a penalty from Biel-Bienne, who were looking for containment. Finnish forward Kossila dished some fancy sauce to Robert Rosén who'd beat the left side of van Pottelberghe
A call in favour of the Swiss visitors saw a golden chance by Fabio Hofer who collected an impressive long pass from his netminder, but backstop Emil Larmi had his number
Forward Manuel Ågren extended the lead for the Lakers at 14:01 after tapping in an awkward bounce
off a rebound hammered at the net by Kossila.
A slapshot from the blade of Biel-Bienne's Toni Rajala was a fraction away from cutting the lead but instead ringed off the post of Larmi. The first period would end 2-0 in favour of the hosts
with Växjö outshooting their rivals 14-11
The Swedes continued the scoring in the second period. Martin Lundberg, who was assisted by Dylan McLaughlin and Tobias Rieder, beat the glove side of van Pottelberghe to extend the lead to 3-0
A highlight-reel-worthy stick save by van Pottelberghe stemmed further damage to the scoreboard
but the Swiss side struggled to close the gap.
Biel-Bienne were chasing points in the third period but it would be Växjö would take the lion's share of quality opportunities
including a sensational attempt from Ågren who dangled his way onto the doorstep of the Swiss team's net
the Swiss team pulled their goalie for a sixth man on their powerplay but had no success
The last two minutes saw the goalie pulled once more, but that decision proved fatal after a turnover saw Kossila net his first goal of the night
to close out the game 4-0 in favor of the hosts

Växjö’s new station and municipal building is one of the largest wooden buildings ever built in Sweden
The material and an efficient energy system have contributed to the building being certified with Miljöbyggnad Guld (the Gold Certification)
After running an open competition to design a new city hall
the winning proposal of ‘Under One Roof’ by White Arkitekter designed a potentially zero-carbon timber development that combines municipal functions and transport infrastructure under one roof
The zero-carbon desire is made possible by the mostly wood construction with solar PV-modules and a sustainable urban drainage system
The concept behind their design was focused on the societal loss of the traditional working day
with the desire to accommodate for people working and travelling at any hour at the heart of the Växjö evolution
The architect’s competition was decided in January 2017
and White Arkitekter left the project in early 2018
Sweco and Skanska had been involved in the designing process of the building
and the house was inaugurated in autumn of 2021
“The proposal presents a coherent and characterful building with a strong expression
a new silhouette and a new landmark for Växjö
The building has three main entrances that connect well to the city’s structure
The entrances intertwine elegantly in the interior
a beautiful vertical wooden room that connects all the building’s different levels
the winning proposal is an elaborate building which is able to meet Växjö’s requirements and intentions of a sustainable future throughout,” stated the Jury after making a unanimous decision on White Arkitekter’s proposal in January 2017
“Designing a modern wooden building with both station and town hall under the same roof and which meets all fire
and work environment requirements has challenged us in many ways
while we have always strived for good architecture and interesting experiences in the building,” says Niklas Kummer
In the building there is a wooden frame of cross-glued wooden elements and column beam construction of wood
Also inside there are many building parts of visible wood
In the middle of the building is a large and open “living room” where the wood creates a warm and welcoming feeling
who took over the project from White Arkitekter
have created an oasis in the public square
This takes up 780m2 and is an open social hub that connects central Växjö with the southern part of the city on the other side of the railroad
They have kept the layout as open as possible
so people are able to move efficiently to and from the city hall
the city hall is an exemplar workplace with 600 municipal employees
Four and a half stories of that include workspace that has been designed as a mix of flexible
“We have learned a lot about wooden building technology
and it has been an exciting journey from our first efforts to seeing the building completed
The project has welded together everyone who has worked with it
and we are very proud to have been part of the team
I hope that the building will give Växjö a nice face for a long time to come,” says Niklas

They have delivered carbon efficiencies and positive environmental impact across thousands of projects
and their teams of multi-disciplinary sustainability experts pride themselves on sharing climate insights with clients and professional institutions alike

We are delighted to announce the athletes selected to represent the red rose at the Växjö International in Sweden next month
The team of fifteen young athletes will compete across shot put
discus and javelin at the unique indoor arena
The competition provides an outstanding opportunity for the under-18 and under-20 contingent to learn about international competition culture
working with team staff and travelling across the globe for competition
Amongst those selected are Commonwealth Youth Games javelin silver medallists Tom Rutter and Harriet Wheeler and European U18 shot put champion from 2022
“Congratulations to all of the selected throwers
The team is comprised of throwers hoping to be selected for the World Athletics Under 20 Championships and the European Under 18 Championships this summer
“This competition provides a fantastic opportunity to develop coaches working with athletes on the Talent Pathway by giving them firsthand experience of selection meetings and working as team coach roles
I’d like to thank the team coaches and selection panel members Katryn Woodcock (discus)
Greg Beard (shot put) and Scott Knighton (javelin) for their hard work in preparation for selection meeting and wish them the very best in supporting the team out in Sweden
“It’s my hope that the team perform to the best of their ability so we have a good idea of where they are very early on this season are able to identify key ways they need to develop ahead of being at their best at national and hopefully international championships in the summer.”
England returned to the Indoor Throwing competition at Växjö
Sweden this year after a successful inaugural trip last year
A junior team of under-20 and under-18 shot
discus and javelin athletes – all of whom were keen to use the opportunity to prepare for the outdoor season – made the journey to Sweden
it was a busy day of competition for our athletes
The shot putters kicked off the day with a very strong start with four athletes making the podium for their respective age groups
Indoor discus competitions are also few and far between
so this was a great opportunity not only to see how winter training had been going
but also increase international competition experience for the throwers
The javelin throwers took advantage of the unusual opportunity of a winter indoor javelin competition that the facility at Växjö can offer
The increase in entries this year resulted in a very long timetable which for the Javelin throwers meant a very late start to competition
but this did not affect their perseverance and performances
“The team all performed brilliantly and as Team Leader I was very impressed with their maturity in dealing with a long schedule of events
The timing of the trip has provided a great opportunity to assess how winter training is progressing
a great tune up for upcoming British Championships
“All should be motivated by their performances and build on this as we head into the outdoor season
A huge thank you to the team staff who worked tirelessly to support the athletes and each other.”
The fifteen athletes were supported by Team Leader Vicky Griffiths
