Swedish police are investigating “possible terror motives,” after a stabbing attack in the town of Vetlanda on Wednesday
At a press conference following the incident, the chief of police for the Jönköping region Malena Grann said authorities had launched a preliminary probe into “attempted murder,” but there was a possibility the attack was terror-motivated
Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven in a statement called the attack “heinous,” and confirmed prosecutors had launched a “preliminary investigation into terrorist crimes.”
Sweden’s last major terror attack occurred in 2017
when a man who was sympathetic to Islamic State drove a stolen truck into a crowd

A man in his 20s is in custody after being shot in the leg by police following the attack in Vetlanda
A man armed with an axe has attacked and injured eight people in a southern Sweden town in what authorities called a suspected terrorist crime
Police said the man in his 20s attacked people in the small town of Vetlanda
about 190 km (118 miles) southeast of Göteborg (Gothenburg)
The man was taken into custody after being shot in the leg by police
who said the condition of those attacked and of the perpetrator was not immediately known
Officials did not provide details on the identity of the suspect
said a possible terrorist motive was being investigated
“In the light of what has emerged so far in the police investigation
prosecutors have initiated a preliminary investigation into terrorist crimes,” he said
investigators said they had started a preliminary investigation into attempted murder with details “that make us investigate any terrorist motives.”
“But at the moment I cannot go into details,” the regional police chief
said “it seems that the injuries are not life-threatening” but could not give further details
The events took place in downtown Vetlanda
with police saying they received calls just after 2pm GMT about a man assaulting people with an axe
Police also said that there were five crime scenes in this town of roughly 13,000 people

System integrator Alfen will provide a BESS for co-location with a wind farm in Sweden while aluminium company Hydro has inaugurated a solar and BESS project at one of its extrusion facilities
Netherlands-headquartered Alfen will supply its ‘TheBattery Elements’ battery energy storage system (BESS) product to independent power producer (IPP) Rabbalshede Kraft for deployment at a wind farm in Femstenaberg
The 20MW/20MWh system will be supplied along with a 10-year service agreement from Alfen
Rabbalshede Kraft plans to add a 30MW solar PV power plant to the site in future as well
The announcement indicated the BESS would both optimise the output of the wind project (42.6MW
comprising seven Siemens Gamesa 6.6MW wind turbines) as well as provide ancillary services to Sweden’s transmission system operator (TSO) Svenska kraftnät
Most projects in Sweden are 1-hour projects to target the ancillary services market, which makes up the vast majority of today’s revenue stack, as discussed by the CEO of BW ESS, currently building the country’s largest BESS portfolio, in an interview this week (Premium access).
The announcement from Alfen echoes a 20MW order it received in January from another IPP in Sweden, Vasa Vind
aluminium company Hydro (official name Norsk Hydro) has started operating three BESS unit in parallel with ground-mounted and rooftop solar at its extrusion facility in Vetlanda
Aluminium extrusion is the process of creating fixed cross-sectional pieces from heated aluminium alloy
The solution comprises seven rooftop solar installations totalling 2.1MWp
a 2MWp ground-mounted solar array and three BESS units totalling 4.5MW (MWh not disclosed)
The project has a goal of no net loss of biodiversity for natural habitats
The BESS will provide flexibility to Hydro to optimise the self-consumption of renewable energy but will also provide support services to the grid in Sweden
The ultimate goal is to make Hydro’s extrusion facilities in Vetlanda and Finspång net-zero via renewable energy

The Lemnhult Project is a wind farm being built by Stena Renewables in Lemnhultsområdet in Sweden
Lemnhultsområdet is situated in the Vetlanda Municipality
The wind farm is located southwest of Lemnhult society
The project represents the largest investment made by Stena Renewables to date
it will become the largest onshore wind farm in Sweden
The wind farm will produce 270GWh of power annually
which is sufficient to power 54,000 households
It will meet 70% of the total demand for electricity in the Vetlanda municipality
The Lemnhult project area was leased from Sveaskog and a number of private owners
It is partly clear and partly dense with forest vegetation
Stena Renewables applied for the environmental permit for the project to the County Board of Jönköping in late December 2009
Environmental consultation with the County Board of Jönköping and Vetlanda
The county of Vetlanda approved the project in March 2011
Inclusion of a wind farm in Vetlanda municipality’s master plan favoured the approval of the Lemnhult project
The Environmental Assessment Advisory Board in the County Administration of Jönköping granted approval for the construction of the wind farm in June 2011
The wind farm will constitute 32 turbines in total
It will thus have an installed capacity of 96MW
Stena Renewables awarded a contract to Vestas in December 2011 for the turbines
Vestas will supply its V112-3.0 MW turbines under the contract
installation and commissioning of the turbines
Vestas will also be responsible for full service and maintenance of the turbines for 15 years
It will provide guarantees for the turbines for these 15 years
The Vestas V112-3.0 MW turbine was launched in August 2010
It is suitable for low and medium wind speeds
which facilitates wider operation and reduces power losses
Improved load control of the turbine helps lower the foundation costs
Stena is currently carrying out preparatory work for electrical wiring connections
Vestas plans to begin the turbine installation at the wind farm site in August 2012 and complete it in April 2013
The turbine has an innovative power system and a full scale converter
which provide good grid support and make the substations simpler
The operations of the power system are not disrupted
even in the event of a severe grid voltage drop
A resistor in the converter converts any power to heat without causing damage to the drive train components due to excess loads
CoolerTop technology uses wind to generate the required cooling
It thus eliminates any need for external energy to cool the turbine components
The cooling system requires little maintenance as it has no moving components
It enables turbine operations at altitudes up to 1,500m
About 80% of the turbine being used in the Lemnhult wind farm is made of recyclable materials
The quantity of non-recyclable materials used in the turbine is compensated for by the carbon emissions reduced by the turbine in eight months of operation
The turbine will thereafter be energy neutral and contribute to carbon emission reductions for more than 19 years
The amount of carbon dioxide emitted during the life time of the turbine
owing to the production and installation of the turbine
is estimated to be as low as seven grams per kWh
The cooling system of the turbine has no electrical components

The attacker, said to be a man in his twenties wielding a knife or an axe, ran amok in Vetlanda, which is about halfway between Stockholm and Malmo, shortly before 3pm yesterday.
He was shot by police and is being treated in hospital. Three of the victims suffered life-threatening injuries; two others are in serious condition.
“The acting leader of our investigation has decided that this should be classified as a terrorist crime,” a spokesman for the local constabulary said.
While warfare between rival gangs is fairly common in Sweden, terrorist attacks are rarer. The last significant incident was in 2017 when a
Post Courier
in a stabbing attack in a south Swedish town which police are treating as suspected terrorism
struck in five different locations in the centre of Vetlanda around 1400 GMT
Within minutes he was shot and wounded by police
Prime Minister Stefan Löfven said the “horrific violence” was a reminder of “how frail our safe existence is”
“We face these despicable actions with the combined force of the community,” he posted on Facebook
Extra police officers have been put on patrol in the area
the suspect is a resident of the area and previously known to police but in the past he was only suspected of “petty crimes”

The Local Europe ABVästmannagatan 43113 25 StockholmSweden
went out to the Nöjet nightclub in Vetlanda on the night of October 15th
and then spoke to her boyfriend at 2am the following morning
Her disappearance was reported to the police later the next day
after which a search was launched in the surrounding forests
with hundreds of people from Sweden's Missing People voluntary organisation taking part
she had had a fight or disagreement with the 20-year-old now charged for her murder
with locals saying that the two had been in conflict for some time
The 20-year-old and the 18-year-old were seized and held by police a few days after Tove went missing
the body was found near a forest track about 10km outside Vetlanda
after police tracked the movements on the 20-year-old's phone
the 20-year-old finally admitted to killing Tove
but claimed it was an accident and that the two had intended to punish her
the 18-year-old also admitted to involvement in the crime
but she claims to have been asleep or unconscious when the murder took place
and only to have helped dispose of the body
The two had somehow convinced Tove to come back to the 20-year-old's apartment
The prosecutor in the case, Adam Rullman, on Friday charged both women for both murder and desecration of a corpse, with the prosecution agency saying in a press statement that they were being charged for "together and in agreement carrying out the acts"
he said that he believed the 20-year-old had strangled Tove
"They had a conflict which has been described in different ways by different people
It's hard to get a decent grip on it," he said
but he said understanding the motive had "a limited significance
After the two had hidden Tove's body in the forest
returning a day later along with Tove's bag
She then poured flammable liquid over the body and the bag and ignited it again
The 18-year-old denies any involvement in the murder
She was not even in the room when it happened," Mikael Svegfors
The 20-year-old has admitted to strangling the victim
but said that it took place during a fight at the same time as the victim had been trying to strangle her
and after the victim put her hands around my client's neck
she responded by for a short time seizing the neck of the victim," Clea Sangborn
She said that her client also denied committing murder
"partly because the strangle grip in itself cannot have led to the death
and partly because she had no intention of killing the victim"
