The Lion City Sailors’ 16-match unbeaten streak in the Singapore Premier League (SPL) came to an end on Sunday (4 May) evening following a dramatic 3-2 defeat to Geylang International at Our Tampines Hub (OTH) Despite taking a 2-0 lead through goals from Lennart Thy and Shawal Anuar the Sailors were undone by a spirited second-half comeback from the Eagles who had been winless in their previous six outings across all competitions It was an uncharacteristically off-colour performance from the Sailors who looked set to continue their fine run of form until Geylang mounted their response after the break The defeat at this point definitely doesn’t help our season,” said Head Coach Aleksandar Ranković The evening kicked off with a heartwarming gesture as children from Chaoyang School accompanied the players of both teams onto the pitch – courtesy of a collaboration between the Sailors and APSN (formerly known as Association for Persons with Special Needs) Despite the absence of Song Uiyoung and Bart Ramselaar the Sailors started strongly and created the first notable chance of the match in the 14th minute Maxime Lestienne did well to keep the ball in play near the touchline before whipping in a cross that Lennart met with a strong leap Maxime had an effort of his own that missed the target but the Belgian winger soon played a decisive role in the game’s opening goal and the 32-year-old threaded a brilliant eye-of-the-needle pass to Lennart in the box who showed great awareness to turn sharply before firing home to make it 1-0 in the 34th minute the Sailors doubled their lead — and once again as his inch-perfect cross into the box found an unmarked Shawal who made no mistake with a firm header into the back of the net It looked to be smooth sailing for the Sailors as the game approached half-time but the complexion of the contest suddenly shifted when Geylang pulled one back Tomoyuki Doi – currently the SPL’s top scorer – reacted quickest to a rebound to reduce the deficit to 2-1 just before the interval we brought them back into the contest,” lamented Ranko the way we gave away two goals for them to win… it’s not something that either I or my team is used to.” Geylang remained patient in their search for an equaliser after the break with both sides probing cautiously until the game burst into life in the final 20 minutes The breakthrough for the Eagles came in the 73rd minute A lofted ball over the top from Takahiro Tezuka caught the Sailors’ defence off guard and with goalkeeper Izwan Mahbud stranded in no man’s land Ryoya Taniguchi calmly slotted home to level the score The Sailors had a golden opportunity to regain the lead shortly after but Maxime’s close-range free-kick failed to trouble Rudy Khairullah in the Geylang goal Then came the decisive blow in the 86th minute the league’s second-highest scoring team after the Sailors launched a lethal counter-attack — Vincent Bezecourt’s incisive pass found Doi who rifled an unstoppable shot past Izwan to make it 3-2 It was Doi’s 44th league goal in what has been a record-breaking campaign for the prolific Japanese forward Abdul Rasaq Akeem was introduced in the closing stages but Geylang held firm to see out the win at OTH — handing the Sailors a league result they have not been accustomed to for quite some time The duels were far away from their forwards and I think we lacked that aspect as well,” Ranko candidly reflected in his post-match assessment the Sailors remain in control of their SPL title ambitions They currently sit eight points clear of BG Tampines Rovers although having played a game more — and know that two wins from their remaining matches will still be enough to seal the championship Next up for the Sailors is a clash against bottom-placed Tanjong Pagar United on Saturday before a quick turnaround to face Balestier Khalsa four days later “The only thing I can say right now is that we’ve made the title race exciting,” Ranko added But we still have destiny in our own hands.” Venue: Wisma Geylang SeraiDate: Throughout May (scroll for more details)Admission: Free Looking for free and meaningful ways to bond as a family this first step to getting your journey as an official started The ‘Florence Nightingale’ of local football Nurhafizah Abu Sujad broadens the reach of her quest to keep footballers in top condition joining the Lion City Sailors while retaining her role as National Teams Head Physiotherapist The Women’s Premier League (WPL) clash between Geylang International and Still Aerion on Sunday 13 April is not just another league fixture Farhanah is set to lead her team out at the Choa Chu Kang Stadium against Aerion Aerion wasn’t just her first step into football — it was where she discovered confidence “Aerion helped me when I was a teenager… they helped me gain my own understanding in the position I was playing,” she recalled Farhanah believes those early experiences were crucial: “Thanks to them and a lot more others That foundation helped her grow into one of Singapore’s most reliable midfielders where she now has 41 Singapore caps and two international goals to her name Geylang staged one of the league’s most remarkable turnarounds — jumping from bottom of the table in 2023 to finish third Farhanah attributes much of that shift to the team’s collective mindset It was not  about tactics or transfers — it was about unity “The whole team had one mindset — to win and prove that even though we didn’t have much support back then we still managed to move forward together with our coaches and teammates,”she said A big part of that mindset was built under the steady hand of Head Coach Ratna Suffian a mentor Farhanah has known since she was 17 “To be able to receive feedback from him is really impactful and important — he knows more than any other coach I’ve worked with Being able to play under him means I know that as a player there is no pressure and I am free to express myself on the field,” she said she was part of Ratna’s WPL All-Stars squad joining forces with elite players — including Sunisa ‘Nancy’ Srangthaisong of Aerion and Kana Kitahara of Albirex both who have featured for their respective home countries at the FIFA Women’s World Cup — in a high-profile exhibition against the Ninja A-League’s Brisbane Roar a team that featured Singapore’s own Danelle Tan “It was very meaningful to play alongside World Cup players,” she said It was lovely to train and look at how different in terms of quality that such players like Nancy and Kana put in Their performance and effort will always be incredible to me — and that will forever remain in my memory.” it was perhaps a turning point in Farhanah’s approach to football she’s carried a heightened intensity into every training session — believing that effort on the training ground will prove helpful on matchday Sunday’s matchup against Aerion brings extra edge — not just because it is her former team but because Farhanah will be facing off against her WPL All-Stars teammate “She’s no doubt an amazing player to play with but playing against her is definitely not going to be easy,” Farhanah admitted “Every player has their weaknesses — if we seize those opportunities She knows Aerion has undergone changes since she left the club but Farhanah is certain Geylang will be ready “Our mindset is first to win the game and put the ball in the net Farhanah’s vision goes far beyond this weekend but as a mentor to the younger Geylang players and a contributor to something that could well last as long time at Geylang “My personal goal is to help and lead the team in as many ways as possible — be it as a captain “As a team we hope to finish top three in the league,” she added “I also hope I can pass on my skills and knowledge to the younger ones in the team and contribute to building something here at Geylang.” New Scissor-Cut Curry Rice Restaurant is set to shutter for good PHOTO: Screengrab/Google Maps, screengrab/TikTokPUBLISHED ONApril 14, 2025 8:34 AMByKoh Xing YingA fire broke out at a barbeque restaurant in Geylang on Saturday (April 12) evening forcing 30 diners and employees to evacuate as the flames spread rapidly A video of the incident was posted on TikTok the following day showing the restaurant's exhaust duct on fire and emitting thick smoke Several people were seen in the video attempting to extinguish the fire by climbing up to the affected area Shouting could also be heard from a distance When a reporter from Shin Min Daily News visited the scene two fire trucks and two police cars were at the scene with the road cordoned off who was working close to where the fire began told Shin Min that he realised the shop was on fire only when he saw smoke drifting into his shop The 30-year-old said he immediately ran outside to check and discovered that the smoke exhaust pipe of a nearby shop was ablaze He added that several employees tried to put out the fire using a hose told the Chinese daily that this was the first time fire has occurred in the area He added that the fire was extinguished within half an hour the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to a fire at 70 the location is listed as a restaurant called Moustache BBQ which involved the exhaust ducting in a first-floor kitchen was extinguished by workers using dry powder extinguishers About 30 people evacuated from the affected unit before SCDF's arrival The cause of the fire is under investigation The Lion City Sailors came from behind to secure a hard-fought 2-1 victory over an in-form Geylang International at the Jalan Besar Stadium on Sunday (26 January) with the win sending them six points clear at the top of the Singapore Premier League (SPL) table Taking on the league’s leading scorers — who had won six of their last seven games — was always going to be a challenge goals from Toni Datković and Shawal Anuar overturned Vincent Bezecourt’s early strike to seal all three points for the Sailors After being held to draws in their previous two league meetings the Sailors showed tremendous fighting spirit and resilience to claim their first win over the Eagles this season The result also marked their fourth consecutive league victory and reinforced their strong push for the title “Today’s win was very important,” said Sailors Head Coach Aleksandar Ranković after the match especially with the short recovery time from Thursday’s fixture and that made all the difference in securing the three points.” With this game coming just three days after the Sailors’ hard-fought ASEAN Club Championship (ACC) Shopee Cup draw with Buriram United it was Geylang who started brighter at Jalan Besar And it was the Eagles who took the lead in the 12th minute with Bezecourt unleashing a stunning shot from the edge of the box that nestled into the top corner of Izwan Mahbud’s goal the Sailors remained composed and nearly found an immediate response with Shawal’s header in the 19th minute grazing the post The Sailors’ determination and persistence to get the equaliser finally paid off in the 28th minute when centre-back Toni rose highest to head home Maxime Lestienne’s corner for his fourth goal in the club’s colours the Sailors pushed forward relentlessly and came close to taking the lead minutes later – Maxime’s precise cross found Song Uiyoung in the box but the 31-year-old’s header flew just wide of the target Anumanthan Kumar – starting his third consecutive game in place of the injured Rui Pires – also came close to giving the Sailors the lead with his effort in the 43rd minute forcing a sharp save from Geylang goalkeeper Rudy Khairullah but credit must go to the opponent for making it difficult for us,” explained Ranko we were also quite unlucky — we hit the bar a few times and created other chances that we just couldn’t convert.” who has been in red-hot form coming into this game was unsurprisingly at the heart of the action in the second half as he repeatedly found himself in dangerous positions Shawal looked certain to add to his goal tally but two efforts crash against the post within the span of a minute — leaving the crowd in disbelief But the 33-year-old’s persistence eventually paid off in the 56th minute as he latched onto a deft flick-on from Lennart Thy and coolly poked the ball past Rudy to finally put the Sailors in the driving seat but we stuck to the coaches’ plan and gave our best,” said Shawal the combination and understanding we’ve developed as a team helped us secure the win today.” Geylang came alive late in the second half but Izwan was instrumental in preserving the Sailors’ lead 1 was called into action in the 82nd minute to deny a long-range effort from Ryoya Taniguchi pushing away a fierce drive from Shakir Hamzah staying mentally sharp even after conceding the first goal,” reflected Ranko we struggled to recover when we fell behind but now we’re able to stay calm and turn games around.” and that collective effort allowed us to overcome the challenge today.” The victory once again underscored the depth of the Sailors’ squad New signing Diogo Costa impressed on his debut with his technical ability and relentless runs down the left flank while Anu showcased his quality in midfield Tasked with anchoring the Sailors’ defense the latter played a pivotal role in neutralising the league’s top scorer who had found the net in nine of his last 10 games But while the Sailors currently sit firmly atop the SPL table and has already turned his attention to the demanding schedule ahead in February The month kicks off with a trip to face Kaya FC–Iloilo in the final ACC Shopee Cup group match followed by a league clash against Tanjong Pagar United three days later “I’m happy that we’ve managed to defend our position at the top and we’re just getting started,” said the Sailors tactician it’s time to use the break to recharge before we head into what will be a hectic February.” Faced with increasing competition from newer bazaars popping up all over Singapore As Singapore’s largest and oldest Ramadan bazaar the Geylang Serai Ramadan skeletal remains of a person in the bedroom of a flat The police were called in to Block 63 Sims Place where an elderly man who lived alone was found dead the police said they received a call for assistance at about 2.10pm on Friday (March 28) A 71-year-old man was found lying motionless in a residential unit and pronounced dead at scene A Shin Min reporter who arrived at the scene at about 4pm the same day noted that the windows in the flat were not fully shut A notice pasted on the ground floor of the block stated that renovation works are ongoing One of the workers told the Chinese evening daily he was repainting the building facade and had detected a strange odour when the gondola passed by the flat The 27-year-old immediately informed his supervisor and called the police Another worker claimed he saw the remains on a bed Shin Min quoted the man as saying that there were "only bones left" said the deceased rarely interacted with others and would typically leave his home only at night said she had not seen the man in a "long time" but did not notice any foul smell added that the deceased often brought bottles and scrap items home and ants and cockroaches would scuttle out of the flat Wang told 8world he had not seen the man since last year but did not notice anything amiss as the deceased seldom left the flat during the day who lives in the unit below the man's told Shin Min the insects had appeared in her flat last year and she had occasionally noticed an odour "I didn't go upstairs to ask and I have never met him before," she said adding that the situation improved after she sprayed insecticide and sealed her door the police said they do not suspect foul play and investigations are ongoing The Geylang Serai Ramadan Bazaar is Singapore’s most iconic and vibrant Ramadan market transforming the heart of the Malay-Muslim cultural precinct into a bustling festival ground during the fasting month This beloved annual event draws thousands of visitors who come to experience its rich blend of traditional and contemporary offerings from authentic Malay cuisine to modern fusion food all set against a backdrop of stunning light installations and decorations This year’s edition features over 500 stalls including 150 F&B stalls Since it was the bean’s first time at the bazaar we played a game where we took turns deciding what to order from the different stalls The bean’s first order was a tornado potato ($4) from Boolatz Kitchenz (Stall 105) He had this previously at other markets before but what made this different was a breaded coating around the potato spiral that gave it a bit more texture The stall did offer to have powdered seasonings but we opted for the normal version The little bean loved it but I do prefer it to be more flavored The tornado potato is also best eaten when it’s fresh from the fryer as it gets soft quite fast We also spotted another item over at Boolatz Kitchenz which I mistook as a giant curry puff Their roti boyan (2 for $5) had a tasty pastry encapsulating a potato and egg filling The pastry was light and a nice starter to get the appetite going.  The bean’s next order was a nachos dog ($8) from Kream (Stall 75) The portion size was huge and they were really generous with the nacho sauce Not the easiest thing to eat especially if one is walking around but definitely something that the little ones will enjoy we had no choice but to find a spot to sit down I came across a stall Taste of Indonesia (Stall 180) that was selling Indonesian fare I opted for the bakso halus ($8) in hopes that it can cleanse some of the oils from our food The broth was light and can be further flavored with the sweet sauce that they provided The bakso was springy and went well with their sambal We spotted a long wait at one of the stalls and went to check it out JOM (Stall 143) serves up a variety of indomie and keropok lekor We went for the signature sambal ($7) since bean could not make up his mind Their keropok is the softer type and had a nice chew to it without being too greasy The fish flavour came through and was nicely complemented by their sambal dip the bean still wanted to have french fries and we settled on Mahmud’s Tandoor (Stall 84) because I was craving a good burger We ordered the OG Burger with loaded fries ($17) and wanted the Chai Peng Slush but it was not ready yet The burger was the best thing we had all night with a nicely marinated and charred chicken patty in between two soft brioche buns The fries were nicely seasoned as well and topped off with tandoori chicken bits and a harissa mayo and mint yoghurt The only critique was that the flavour of the sauces did not quite come through but the acidity did help to balance out the entire dish I picked up a Iced Asam Boi ($3) from Katoshka (Stall 61) The drink was abit on the sweeter side but it was nice to end the night with The Geylang Serai Ramadan Bazaar takes place till 30 March from 10 am till midnight except on the final day when operating hours will be extended until 6 am on 31 March 2025 Look out for your first newsletter in your inbox soon The best of Singapore straight to your inbox We
