Ms Fu said that the final decision on the slate of candidates for the area will be made by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong
While seven of them - the five current MPs and two new faces - were at Saturday's event
there are six seats across the GRC and SMC
Ms Fu told the over 200 community partners, grassroots leaders and residents in attendance that the new electoral boundaries of the area would not affect the team’s work
She noted that the areas under the town council’s purview would shift under the latest electoral map released last month

“We are excited about the prospect and look forward to serving residents from Hong Kah

Ms Fu also took stock of the work done by the town council over the last five years
The town council has expedited the implementation of repairs and redecoration (R&R) work following disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic
“We have completed R&R works for over 361 blocks
with 296 blocks currently underway and 243 blocks in the pipeline,” she said

more than 250 upgrading projects have been completed
with efforts made to provide comfort and convenience for pedestrians
“We have almost 2,300 lifts across our town
Through the Lift Enhancement Programme and Lift Replacement Programme
we have upgraded and modernised almost 1,600 of these lifts

lifestyleNational monuments of Singapore: Jurong Town HallPHOTO: Wonderwall.sgPUBLISHED ONDecember 07, 2024 12:00 PMByNg KaiWhat is a National Monument
How many national monuments are there in Singapore
structures and sites of national significance as an integral part of Singapore's built heritage
we put delve deeper into a building symbolising Jurong's rapid development during Singapore's post-independence industrialisation
Jurong Town Hall was the 69th building to be gazetted as a National Monument
The MRT station nearest to it is Jurong East
When Singapore gained self-governance in 1959
the newly-formed government faced several pressing challenges
The situation was further complicated by the looming withdrawal of British military forces from the island
saw industrialisation as the solution to these issues
he identified the expansion of industries as the key to economic growth
the government sought guidance from a United Nations Technical Assistance team led by Dr Albert Winsemius
who later served as Singapore's economic advisor until 1984
outlined a four-year plan focused on economic development and industrial expansion
This included a strong government role in facilitating industrial growth while encouraging private sector participation
Singapore launched its ambitious industrialisation programme in 1961
The strategy involved expanding the manufacturing sector
This push was intended to stimulate other areas of the economy and set the stage for Singapore's long-term economic success
the Economic Development Board (EDB) was established to lead Singapore's industrialisation efforts
One of its landmark projects was transforming Jurong
into the country's first and largest industrial estate
Jurong was chosen for its proximity to shipping routes and its vast expanses of undeveloped land
the area underwent a dramatic transformation: swamps were drained
and infrastructure built to accommodate industries ranging from steel production and timber manufacturing to shipbuilding
Jurong's industrial estate had grown significantly
prompting the government to establish a specialised agency to manage and develop industrial estates
This allowed the EDB to focus on broader investment and economic strategies
Jurong Town Corporation (JTC) was formed in June 1968
Dr Goh Keng Swee announced JTC's development plans for Jurong
including the construction of a modern Town Hall to serve as its headquarters
A national design competition in 1969 attracted over 30 submissions
with local firm Architects Team 3 securing the winning entry
One of the members of the winning team was Penang-born architect Lim Chong Keat
who had also played a role in designing the former Singapore Conference Hall and Trade Union House (now known as the Singapore Conference Hall
[embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jp4-BR0i7r4[/embed]
Construction of Jurong Town Hall (JTH) began in May 1971 and was completed in March 1974
JTC officially moved into its new headquarters in 1974
then-Minister of Finance Hon Sui Sen formally inaugurated the building
The opening coincided with JTC's seventh anniversary
including exhibitions showcasing locally manufactured products and guided tours of the new Town Hall
It provided essential infrastructure and services to Jurong
and utilities such as electricity and telecommunications
It also introduced public transport services to and within Jurong Town
making the area self-sufficient and liveable
JTH played a vital role in fostering international relations
and delegations interested in Singapore's industrialisation model
These visits often led to economic co-operation and expanded trade opportunities
JTH made history by hosting the first-ever international tea auction outside of London
capitalising on Singapore's strategic location near major tea-producing countries and shipping routes
Though JTC relocated to larger headquarters in 2000
JTH remains an important part of Singapore's economic ecosystem
JTC announced plans to establish the new Trade Association Hub at the site
the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry had become the Hub's main tenant
further cementing JTH's legacy as a centre of economic activity and collaboration
JTH was designed to symbolise the success of Singapore's industrialisation efforts
and inspired by the Brutalist architectural style
Derived from the French term of Beton Brut
Brutalism is an architectural style popularised in the 1960s
characterised in many parts of the world by the use of exposed and unfinished concrete
the building features a striking H-shaped design comprising two elongated parallel blocks linked by bridges
complete with a 50m-tall clock tower resembling a mast
The tapering upper floors provide shade from the sun
while its reinforced concrete structure highlights its industrial character
Functionality was a key consideration in the design
an air-conditioned theatrette (a large room with theatre-style seating)
These features made it suitable for public use
and conferences to support Singapore's industrial growth

Overview of the new Jurong Town Hall bus interchange
SINGAPORE: The new Jurong Town Hall bus interchange will open later this month with more inclusive public transport facilities and a new bus service
the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said on Friday (Nov 3)
complementing Jurong East MRT station and Jurong East bus interchange
"The bus interchange has been designed to be more accessible for families with young children
as well as those with mobility challenges," said LTA
citing the barrier-free access at entrances and dedicated priority queue zones with seating at all boarding berths
Other facilities include wheelchair-accessible toilets and changing room
a baby care room for parents and a commuter care room for those who require a "quiet and calming space"
LTA said that these facilities are equipped with auto-sliding doors operated by touchless sensors
The baby care and wheelchair-accessible changing room doors also have audio cue alerts upon opening and closing
The Jurong Town Hall bus interchange will also have amenities for staff
The new interchange will be connected to Jurong East MRT station and Jurong East bus interchange via additional covered linkways and a pedestrian overhead bridge that will be fitted with lifts
"This ensures convenient access between all three transport nodes
with a fully-sheltered route available for commuters," said LTA
adding that the existing Venture Drive will also be extended to connect Jurong East Street 11 with Jurong Gateway Road
The extension is expected to be ready for public use in early November
A new bus service, 870, will also start, connecting residents in Tengah town to key amenities in Jurong East town centre and operating out of the new interchange
"Service 870 will ply along corridors such as Jurong East Central
Bukit Batok West Avenues 3 and 6," said LTA

It will no longer stop at Jurong East bus interchange
along with the introduction of service 870
Information on the changes in bus routes will be available at all relevant bus stops
"We seek commuters’ understanding that our bus operators may require some time to familiarise themselves with the operations of the new bus interchange," said LTA
will monitor the situation closely and make any necessary adjustments to ensure smooth bus journeys for commuters."
