This is the first walkover at a General Election since 2011
SINGAPORE: Opposition parties have voiced disappointment following the walkover in Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC on Wednesday (Apr 23) – the first in a General Election since 2011
"PSP believes that we should give Singaporeans a chance to experience the democratic process
We should not have a walkover," said Progress Singapore Party (PSP) chief Leong Mun Wai
Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) chairman Paul Tambyah said he was "very surprised" by the walkover
it would have made a lot more sense if NSP had gone back there
everybody was holding their cards very close to the chest
who is SDP's candidate for Bukit Panjang SMC
The National Solidarity Party (NSP) had previously contested in Marine Parade GRC
most recently in the 2011 General Election
The five-member People's Action Party (PAP) team for Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC was declared elected after no other candidates submitted nomination papers for the constituency
The slate comprises Speaker of Parliament Seah Kian Peng
former MacPherson SMC MP Tin Pei Ling and Minister of State for Home Affairs and National Development Faishal Ibrahim
as well as newcomers Goh Pei Ming and Diana Pang
The Workers' Party (WP), widely expected to contest in the GRC as it had in 2015 and 2020
Mr Leong said that the WP may have "valid reasons" for not standing there
He confirmed there were no prior discussions among other opposition parties to contest in the constituency
On the reshuffling of the PAP slate – which saw PAP heavyweights like Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat and Senior Minister Teo Chee Hean stepping down – he said it was "hard to say" if it provided any advantage for the opposition
PAP's side has gone through quite a big change in their slate
but they are worthy opponents," said Mr Leong
who is contesting in West Coast-Jurong West GRC
The PAP initially announced its Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC slate on Apr 20
The party originally included Manpower Minister Tan See Leng in its Marine Parade-Braddell Heights line-up
Dr Tan shifted to helm the PAP team in Chua Chu Kang GRC
moved from Chua Chu Kang to lead the PAP team in Punggol GRC
where he will face a WP slate led by lawyer Harpreet Singh
Dr Tambyah said: "There's going to be a credibility question there about See Leng."
Speaking to the media after Nomination Day proceedings, WP chief Pritam Singh said the party would continue its work in Marine Parade-Braddell Heights despite not contesting it
"We will continue our work there after the general elections
but I hope you understand we're a small political party
"We try and put the best foot forward when we have to fight an election campaign
and this is the strategy that we have taken for this election given what had happened with the boundary redrawing and other calculations that the Workers' Party certainly has to take into account," he added
When asked if it was a miscalculation by the party
Mr Singh said he was sure the PAP "was watching" which WP members would go to Marine Parade-Braddell Heights
over the hour between nomination opening and nomination closing," he added
it's not a case as if everyone knew in advance that the PAP would field a slate – I'm not going to say it's a weakened slate because there are no such thing as weak candidates in my view
It's going to be a very tough election for us," said the WP's secretary-general
"I'm sure they were watching where we were going
People's Power Party chief Goh Meng Seng was teary-eyed as he spoke about the WP's decision
saying he was angry when he heard the news of the walkover
"If WP made clear their plan to not run in Marine Parade
but WP had been mum about their deployment," he said
People's Alliance for Reform (PAR) secretary-general Lim Tean said the walkover was "a great pity"
Mr Lim told CNA he wishes the WP had alerted opposition parties about their intention to not contest in the GRC
adding that he was sure other parties could have "filled the gap" instead of gifting the PAP a walkover
who heads the Singapore People's Party (SPP)
was similarly disappointed by the "unexpected turn" in what was expected to be a keenly contested race
SPP and NSP chiefs both said they were surprised to hear about WP's decision
"We share the disappointment felt by many residents who were looking forward to a robust democratic process with diverse voices and choices at the ballot box,” said SPP secretary-general Steve Chia
When asked whether the NSP regretted not fielding a team in Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC
NSP had been clear from the outset that it would focus on Sembawang and Tampines GRCs
fielding a team that included Mr Ng and Ms Nicole Seah
Mr Ng said the party has made a commitment to the residents in Sembawang and Tampines
be it three-cornered fights or four-cornered fights
This is the promise we’ve made to the people," he said
“This is what a political party should do – keeping to their promise.”

SINGAPORE: The People’s Action Party (PAP) on Sunday (Apr 20) introduced its slate for Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC in the May 3 polls
The five-member team will be led by Manpower Minister Tan See Leng
who is joined by Minister of State for Home Affairs and National Development Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim
Speaker of Parliament Seah Kian Peng and former MacPherson SMC MP Tin Pei Ling
Speaking first, Dr Tan, who leads the ward as the anchor minister, elaborated on the initiatives that the team has rolled out for the ward, including the five-year plans for the area that were launched on Saturday
“We have even more plans for the future because our work is never done
therefore I seek strong mandate from all of the residents
not just for the Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC
has been spotted with the PAP team in the Marine Parade cluster since late March
She currently chairs the People’s Association Women’s Integration Network Council and the Fengshan Women’s Executive Committee
and sits on the board of the Singapore Council of Women’s Organisations
she has more than 19 years of experience in audit
Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC has seen some boundary changes
giving up some areas in Chai Chee and Siglap to East Coast GRC while taking in MacPherson SMC and a small number of polling districts from Potong Pasir and Mountbatten
The former Marine Parade GRC has been touted as a key battleground ahead of the May 3 polls
with the PAP team edging out the Workers’ Party (WP) with 57.74 per cent of the vote at the last General Election in 2020
lower than the 64.07 per cent it garnered in 2015
In response to a question by CNA on what a strong mandate would look like
Dr Tan said "we have to look at it from the national numbers post-GE"
"If we can at least be on par with the national numbers
I think that would be a good mandate," he said
referring to the PAP's share of the popular vote
honoured enough by the residents to be able to come back and lead this cluster again
I'm actually happy to discuss with you whether it constitutes a strong mandate or not."
Dr Tan said his team is "not presumptuous"
"All of us here have this singular focus in wanting to serve our country
especially during these uncertain times," he added
the mayor of South East District and former Speaker of Parliament Tan Chuan-Jin
Mr Tan Chuan-Jin stepped down in July 2023 after an extramarital affair with fellow party member Cheng Li Hui
Mr Tong’s ward was carved out of Marine Parade GRC and absorbed into the hotly-contested East Coast GRC, where he is widely expected to be fielded
Dr Tan thanked Mr Fahmi for his service but did not say what his next move was
The former army colonel made his political debut in the 2020 General Election
While Dr Tan confirmed Mr Fahmi will not be fielded in Marine Parade-Braddell Heights
he said the actual determination on whether he would run elsewhere will be revealed on Nomination Day
On whether Mr Fahmi will continue being mayor
Dr Tan said “this is a decision that we are not able to unilaterally take”
This would depend the election results and the mandate given to the PAP
I think we have to be humble to acknowledge the fact that in an election
the voters will always have a choice," he added
the type of mandate that our residents are prepared to give us
or whether they want to give us the mandate at all
I'm sure there will be a lot more clarity."
Associate Professor Faishal, who represented the Nee Soon Central division in Nee Soon GRC for three terms since 2011, had earlier announced in April that he would contest as part of the Marine Parade team – as he did during his first term as an MP in 2006
Assoc Prof Faishal said that it has been a “pleasant experience” walking the ground in Marine Parade and that he had been touched by experiences where he met residents who still remembered him
While he has been an MP for Nee Soon for the past three terms
Dr Faishal said he had remained connected to the Marine Parade ward in his capacity as lead adviser to Wisma Geylang Serai
He also highlighted his experience in six ministries since he has entered politics
which allowed him to work with stakeholders in Marine Parade
The WP is expected to contest in Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC again
although the party has remained tight-lipped on its slate
According to the report released by the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee (EBRC) in March
Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC has 131,493 eligible voters
Ms Pang has served for more that two decades at the PAP's Fengshan Branch
where she has held key leadership roles including branch treasurer and Women’s Wing chair
She is a director of a local small- and medium-sized enterprise
and implements employee-focused workplace policies
The party said Ms Pang has 20 years of experience working alongside families
women and caregivers focusing on issues of health
but I also will act on it," she said in her introduction speech on Sunday
"From the moment I stepped into Marine Parade-Braddell Heights
I felt nothing but warmth from all the residents
listened to me and gave me a calming heart
This extraordinary feeling fuels my resolve to work harder."
She gave two examples of residents she met on the ground
stating that she is going to "personally" follow up on these cases
One involves a man who is recently-divorced with two young children and has a bedridden 57-year-old mother
and who Ms Pang described as someone who has fallen through the cracks
The other case is a 92-year-old woman living alone with her 70-year-old daughter who has special needs
and I think I got a 'talk-to-me' face," Ms Pang said
and I'll do my best to care for them and do what I can to make sure their lives are a little bit easier."

Minister of State for Home Affairs and National Development Faishal Ibrahim as well as new faces Goh Pei Ming and Diana Pang
PAP’s Manpower Minister Tan See Leng did not turn up at the nomination centre
and was fielded at Chua Chu Kang GRC instead
The party had on Sunday announced its five-member team for the constituency
with Dr Tan slated to anchor the quartet of Mr Faishal
A few Workers' Party (WP) new faces including Jeraldine Phneah and Linda Low were spotted at the nomination centre on Wednesday
but they did not submit their nomination papers
Mr Seah said the lack of a contest came as a surprise
because it's been some time since this place ever had a walkover,” said Mr Seah
our heart and our mission and our goals remain unchanged
which is to do our best to serve and make lives better for our residents.”
"Dr Tan is a good doctor but he is also a good soldier and a good leader
WP said it was a "very difficult decision" not to contest the redrawn Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC
adding that it must focus its best efforts on a smaller number of constituencies
we are constantly faced with difficult choices about where and how best to deploy our limited resources
particularly after electoral boundaries are redrawn," WP chief Pritam Singh said
"After much reflection and careful consideration
we have determined that in order to continue fighting for the principles and changes we all believe in
and to give our candidates the best chance of electoral success
the party must focus its best efforts this GE on a smaller number of constituencies than we would have hoped to contest."
Mr Singh said he hopes for continuing support for the Workers' Party in this election
"The Workers’ Party aims to restart our outreach in Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC after GE2025," he added

Workers’ Party chief Pritam Singh addresses questions from the media in Sengkang on Apr 24
SINGAPORE: Workers’ Party (WP) chief Pritam Singh on Thursday (Apr 24) defended the party's decision not to contest in Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC in Singapore's May 3 General Election, after other opposition blocs expressed surprise and disappointment in the move
The WP had been tipped to field a team in the constituency
given that it did so at the 2015 and 2020 elections
as well as their longtime presence on the ground in estates there
Instead, a ruling People’s Action Party’s (PAP) slate was declared elected on Nomination Day after no other candidates submitted their papers
Asked by CNA if the WP could have considered informing other opposition parties of their decision
Mr Singh said: “It's not as if some of these opposition parties – and full respect to them
because they have the right to contest elections – but they don't approach us when they say: 'Can I stand here
"They make decisions in their enlightened self-interest and so do we."
The opposition People’s Power Party (PPP) secretary-general Goh Meng Seng also told the media on Wednesday that his party would have contested in Marine Parade-Braddell Heights had the WP not been “mum about their deployment”
In response, Mr Singh on Thursday said: “Mr Goh should focus on the campaign in Tampines.”

“I acknowledged and validated their disappointment that we were not standing there
after I shared with them the reality of boundaries being redrawn
the reality of our own calculations as a party
as to what is a better strategy – I think they understood where I was coming from,” said Mr Singh
the WP ended up making a play for Tampines – a Group Representation Constituency it has never contested in
The surprise move also saw former MP Muhamad Faisal Abdul Manap leave the Aljunied GRC team to lead a Tampines slate
Reporters on Thursday asked Mr Singh why WP decided to run in Tampines GRC for the first time
and whether he had concerns over the four-way battle
"We’ve been walking in Tampines for some time prior to GE2020," said Mr Singh
we did not have a good enough group of people who were prepared to step forward.”
He said such multi-cornered contests were “going to be the norm” in Singapore’s political scene in future
four-cornered fights in this election campaign
but they shouldn't dissuade us from putting forward a credible proposition to Singaporeans for a rational
As for the WP’s strategy behind where to field its candidates, in light of the last-minute switches seen on Nomination Day
Mr Singh said there was "nothing untoward" about the party's planning
you could tell that even the PAP didn't confirm its slate way until the end
So certainly we were quite clear what we wanted to do,” he said
to manage our own candidates in the way that we wanted to ..
We put forward the best slate of candidates we can for Singapore
We want a more balanced political system.”

"When the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee released the drastic changes to the boundaries which I felt was strategically drawn
I was prepared for a situation like this to happen," she said
Lim added that she preferred partaking in a general election
as it allows residents to "have credible options"
saying he felt "betrayed" as a Singaporean
"I am extremely disappointed that there is a walkover
all voters should have a chance to let their voices be heard," he said
"We should not find ourselves in this situation."

in response to Singapore Democratic Party chairman Paul Tambyah’s remarks at opposition party’s rally a day ago
Defending the party chief Chee Soon Juan’s decision to leave Bukit Batok and contest Sembawang West SMC, Dr Tambyah had questioned if Health Minister Ong Ye Kung was referring to the People’s Action Party’s (PAP) own Nomination Day switches when accusing Dr Chee of abandoning Bukit Batok

which is expected to be completed within the first quarter of 2026
There are also plans to have a “community hub” – spanning about 40,000 sqft – in the building to house “a series of social service enterprises or social service organisations”

SINGAPORE: The Workers' Party (WP) left a "vacuum" by contesting in Tampines GRC instead of Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC
Mr Masagos Zulkifli said on Wednesday (Apr 23)
the fact that Workers' Party is in Tampines and not in Marine Parade is a question that Workers' Party should answer," the Minister for Social and Family Development from the People's Action Party (PAP) added
They apparently want to compete here and left a vacuum in Marine Parade and that's something their leadership should answer."
He was speaking to reporters at the launch of PAP's manifesto for Tampines GRC
after it was confirmed that PAP will clinch Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC in a walkover
Mr Masagos is anchoring a five-member team in Tampines GRC
the National Solidarity Party (NSP) and the People’s Power Party (PPP) in a four-way fight
WP is contesting the GRC for the first time
with the party making a surprise move to field its vice-chairman and former Aljunied MP Muhamad Faisal Manap as leader of its team there
Mr Masagos said that it was not important how many opposition parties were contesting Tampines GRC and that residents should be "very proud" so many are vying for the constituency
build on the promises that we have delivered and show what we can do as a team so that residents continue to benefit from the work that we all put in together."
Mr Masagos added that "what matters most" was his team's plans for Tampines GRC
promising in the manifesto to create greener spaces
reimagine streets and foster inclusivity for all generations
"Residents should ask our opposition parties – they have plans to represent them in many things in parliament
things that they want to achieve for their party – I think the real question is what do they have for the residents?” he asked
It’s also about how residents’ needs can be fulfilled."
Joining Mr Masagos to complete the PAP's team in Tampines GRC are incumbents Senior Minister of State Koh Poh Koon and Mr Baey Yam Keng
as well as two electoral debutants – former Chief of Army David Neo and Assistant Professor Charlene Chen
One of the things that "differentiates" PAP from WP
is how his party builds on its manifestos for the constituency from as far as a decade back
He added that the team has delivered on its manifesto pledge from the last election to turn Tampines into an "eco town" at the forefront of sustainable development
making it an example for other towns to follow
we have put forth a five-year plan in our manifesto and we look forward to our residents' support
so that even as we debate issues in parliament and take our country forward
we also want to make sure that in their own locality
they live a better life with a better environment."
Mr Masagos was asked about Mr Faisal's candidacy in Tampines GRC and how Malay-Muslim issues might come to the fore
given that the GRC has the highest proportion of Malay voters
saying that Singapore should formally recognise the state of Palestine even before negotiations on a two-state solution are concluded
Mr Masagos said: "I think you should ask Mr Faisal Manap himself
"I don't know what he will be campaigning on
we want to make sure everyone feels included
no one should hurt another just because of what they want best
I think we should listen to everyone and get everybody to basically come together and work as a a cohesive community

Mr Choo called Mr Foo an "experienced campaigner" who has contested in a couple of elections
you have the utmost respect for anyone with a conviction to want to contest in a General Election," Mr Choo said
not only for the individual but for the families and their team
And I think that within the course of the next 10 days
Mr Choo said that he was "confident" in the work and results that PAP had delivered for Tampines Changkat residents
but he stressed that every election "is a serious one"
