Ice cream innovations from Ajdovščina conquer the world
Incom has experienced its fair share of difficulties since it began in a garage in 1989
It is Slovenia’s largest producer of ice cream and frozen confectionery
under its own brands Leone and Leone AL!VE
As an innovator and producer of ice cream for other brands
the company exports more than two million ice cream cones
tubs and other varieties all over the world every day
It has more than 400 employees and invests profits into innovation and development
“We are currently in the initial phase of the ‘Smart Factory’ project
which introduces a high degree of automation into the production process
This year’s revenue will reach €66 million
we have achieved €10 million gross surplus compared to last year,” explains owner Andrej Slokar
innovation and interpersonal relations with family members and employees more than profits alone
From a garage to freezers all over the world
Andrej first began working for the Fructal company
he realized that he wanted to create something of his own
Although his idea did not attract much enthusiasm at home
together with a friend he established a business in their garage in 1989
but it was enough for a living for my family and me,” explains Andrej
who had learnt a few things about entrepreneurship in his previous job
“I started to produce small amounts of ice cream – just enough for one point of sale – and found that I was very good at it
I soon started gathering other people around,” adds Slokar
They started with the production of regular ice cream in tubs
they produce more than two million ice cream and frozen products every single day and export them to 36 countries across the world
Andrej remains modest: “I wanted to be a manufacturer
I’m an entrepreneur because I’m not skillful with my hands despite the fact that at the beginning
pack them in the afternoon and load them in the evening.”
I’ve always asked myself two questions: ‘Why should customers buy from us and not from someone else?’ and ‘Why would someone come and work for me?’
The essence of their philosophy was to build a company
Incom is not particularly well-known in Slovenia
as their products are mostly exported abroad
Ice creams and other frozen products are sold under their own brands Leone and Leone AL!VE
They are also offered as private labels under other brand names
“Our philosophy was not only to penetrate the market
but to set up a thriving company,” explains the Director
He also adds that if they focused only on their own brand it would take decades for it to establish itself on the global market
the company was able to develop much faster
with their products sold under the aegis of well-established brands and a well-oiled marketing machine
He is developing new and innovative products for multinational companies
We don’t only run our own production but also our own engineering
development and building production lines ourselves
We have hardware and electrical project designers and also programmers
Everything we do is aimed at being exclusive,” he describes
the recipe for success is to trust in people
When Andrej started to build his own company
he motivated people so that they believed in achieving success: “I’m the kind of person who is easily inspired
I very much like this child-like trait and if I don’t see passion in a person
He tried to inspire his children to work in the family-owned business
“I never understood why people kept telling me to let the kids themselves decide what they want to do
helped and guided so many doors are open for them,” he adds
He never pushed them to work for the family business but he kept telling them how lovely it would be if the family-owned business could be continued by them
which manufactures ice cream in the shape of unicorns
soccer balls and ladybugs and produces licensed products under the brands Frozen
his son Rok works as head of the entire production-technical department
has found her interest in accounting and finance
started working for the company as a “jack-of-all-trades” and then slowly specialized in different areas
He is enthusiastic about his work as it constantly presents new challenges: “We never get bored
we innovate on a daily basis.” Following the clearly-defined path his father has created certainly isn’t easy
but he manages to stay on it with a passion for challenges
“The job is interesting but also bears great responsibility
Our company is the largest in town and therefore has an important social role to play
Many locals work here – entire families even,” he explains
The company is strongly-connected to the environment in which it operates
It also provides scholarships to local athletes
supports sports in general and particularly the basketball club
it also provides support to the local choir and other institutions
When we cease to find enthusiasm and passion
Andrej says that he built the family business on three core values: integrity
This is also facilitated by responsible leadership: “I set up the company in a way that is professional and well-managed
It has a director and heads of departments
whereas I withdrew from management five years ago.” The company has been reorganized and adjusted to its rapid growth and development
even greater investment is devoted to employee training
“Organizing people is one of the key ingredients for success,” Andrej adds
employees should be motivated and when they face problems
“You have to trust them and give them tasks that are a bit more complex than they believe they are capable of dealing with
happy and satisfied doing this job,” he tells us
“When running a business and hiring people
I’ve always asked myself two questions: ‘Why should customers buy from us and not from someone else?’ and ‘Why would someone come and work for me?’ If I didn’t have the answer to that
in the long-run it can also become something important at the national level when you take a look at how much family-owned businesses contribute to GDP,” he explains
The company’s capital is constantly in circulation: “With us
goals are clear and we do not take money out of the company
Hence that is why we grow so fast,” the owner adds and warns that economies of scale are dangerous and need to be managed wisely
“I don't want to live from economies of scale
but rather from the price difference that rests on knowledge and less on pure muscle,” he points out
motivated and encouraged to do more than they believe they are capable of
You have to trust them and give them tasks that are a bit more complex than they believe they are capable of dealing with
They wish to sell knowledge in the future
the company is focused on its five-year Smart Factory project
Increased automation through robotics was approached with caution as they want to maintain their identity
“Too high a level of automation can to some extent infringe flexibility,” warns Andrej
Another challenging project is the creation of new products and the introduction of new technology into development
The owner does not want the company to constantly increase its gross product turnover but rather to reach its optimum size and then aim for strong development potential: “I also wish to make profit from our know-how
The company is full of smart people so we ought to start selling knowledge
It makes no sense to sell only hands-on products and nothing else.”

The green and whites will return to the league scene with a match against Primorje
who made his 100th appearance for the Dragons in the cup match against Beltinci
“I am very happy and honored to have achieved this number in the Olimpija jersey
Thank you to everyone for the incredible support in these three seasons
where we celebrated many incredible victories and I hope there will be even more in these final weeks of the season as we attack the double crown.”
“The match with Primorje will certainly be difficult
It’s an away game in a very specific city and our memories of the last match in Ajdovščina are positive
but the weather conditions were very demanding then
We expect something similar tomorrow.”
“We have to stick to the plan and with the quality we have in our team
try to get on the ball as quickly as possible
We will have to adapt and use everything we have to get the result we want
Primorje has proven many times that they can fight with anyone and we need to be well aware of that.”

top-quality wineries or hiking routes backdropped by majestic mountains
this Slovenian region makes for an ideal road trip
The Vipava Valley stretches across the southwest corner of Slovenia
sandwiched between the lush Trnovo Forest Plateau and the rocky plateau of the Karst region
It’s blessed with good soil and a perfect climate for winemaking
with a patchwork of vineyards studded with small historic towns and castles
all of which are endlessly rewarding places to explore and while away time
For those who prefer something a bit more active
the region’s surrounding mountains are crisscrossed by superb hiking trails for all capabilities
passing through numerous mountains (some of which are roughly 1000m high)
There’s a reason locals nickname it Paradise Valley — boutique
it’s all that’s best about Slovenia (and there’s an awful lot to like) distilled into one place
The central premise of Nova Gorica’s Capital of Culture bid was the vision of a cross-border city
with Nova Gorica and Gorizia in Italy united by their shared history
despite their separation by political boundaries
admiring postwar architecture and dipping into one of the charming bars and restaurants for dinner or to sample the region’s much-loved wine
head down the Vipava Valley and base yourself either in the town of Ajdovščina or the tiny village of Vipavski Križ

One of the best things about the Vipava Valley is just how easy it is to combine the best outdoor activities — be it hiking
rock climbing or paragliding — with enjoying great food
The classic route to Nanos has two variants — one easy
involving some scrambling with the aid of fixed steel cables and a good head for heights

the company set up solar power units on the roofs of five public buildings
with an estimated annual output of 873 MWh
according to GEN-I and the local authority
was led by current Prime Minister Robert Golob
Under the community solar power plant model, users lease a part of the facility
GEN-I is mostly a gas and power supplier and trader
The company said that since 2021 it only supplies carbon-free electricity
The individual customers are expected to be connected to the network within weeks and become the first real solar community in Slovenia
GEN-I and the Municipality of Ajdovščina first conducted a pilot project in Budanje
The first community rooftop PV plant was installed in 2020 on the primary school in the village
The largest of the five new solar power systems in Ajdovščina
The facilities have a projected operating life of 30 years
citizens get cheaper electricity and avoid investment costs
Mayor Tadej Beočanin expressed satisfaction with the response
citizens secured sustainable energy at a lower price than the market price
and at the same time avoided investment costs
as well as maintenance and insurance,” he pointed out and added that local residents
Slovenia allowed households two years ago to connect to self-supply electricity systems located outside of their local low-voltage network
President of the Management Board of GEN-I Maks Helbl highlighted the importance of solar communities in challenging times
the energy market was shaken by numerous changes
Solar power plants can significantly contribute to more predictable cost management
even those who cannot build their own solar power plant due to spatial
will be able to benefit from their advantages
Such individuals can harness the energy of the sun produced on a roof somewhere else
The important thing is that to enter this kind of community
the members don’t require any financial input
All that is needed is their consent,” the CEO stated
GEN-I said it aims to establish large virtual communities that anyone in the country can join
But there are still significant obstacles with regard to spatial planning and rules
In January, a renewable energy community in Hrastnik installed the first photovoltaic system for joint self-supply in Slovenia. Ljubljana launched a community solar power project last year

Ajdovščina is a humble town in the Vipava Valley region of Slovenia, close to the border with Italy. Locals know the Vipava valley for the excellent wines it produces - as well as prosciutto to rival that of its famous neighbour. But Ajdovščina has another distinction: it has become an unlikely hub for the collection of plastic trash from around the world.
Each year, around 40,000 tons of old fishing nets, synthetic carpet, and textile offcuts arrive at a warehouse on the outskirts of the town. They come from as far afield as Cameroon, Thailand, New Zealand, America, and China - but the warehouse isn’t the final stop on their journey.
Lake Bled, SloveniaThis tiny country in Central Europe has become an unexpected hub for a pioneering circular economy project that’s turning waste into a brand-new resource.
“Normally you take raw materials from the planet, you make products and you landfill them,” says Giulio Bonazzi, chairman and CEO of Aquafil. “But instead of using oil, we use waste.” The affable Italian gestures at a huge repository of discarded products - enormous bales of green netting, thickly braided rope, giant bags filled with scrap material, and musty bundles of carpet. All of them share one thing in common - they’re made of nylon - the core material in Aquafil’s global business.
However, over the same period, nylon’s reputation has shifted. Yes, it is a wonder material that can be fashioned into everything from women’s stockings to molded machine parts, but it is also a product of the petrochemical industry. Thanks to its ubiquity and resilience, nylon now permeates the entire planet, along with other popular plastic polymers like polyester.
The company’s new partnership with Prada is helping to take the concept of circularity mainstream. According to Lorenzo Bertelli, Prada Group Head of Marketing and Communication, the company plans to switch all of its virgin nylon to Re-Nylon by the end of 2021. “The Prada Re-Nylon project highlights our continued efforts towards promoting a responsible business and this collection will allow us to make our contribution and create products without using new resource,” he says.
“Nylon is an iconic product for Prada, so the fact they use ECONYL for their applications presents a great opportunity,” says Bonazzi. “These beautiful products that Prada is making - they come from trash. That’s really like modern day alchemy.”

After a successful pilot project – the first self-sufficient energy community in Slovenia – GEN-I now plans to equip five more public buildings in Ajdovščina with solar panels by the end of 2023
to will be available to all interested consumers
according to an announcement from the municipal authorities
The five solar power plants will be able to supply 100 homes
The total projected installed capacity of the five facilities is 870 kW
but GEN-I will look for interested parties outside the municipality if there is not enough interest in Ajdovščina
The call for non-binding applications is open until September 15
but GEN-I will look elsewhere if the demand is weak
The facilities where the solar power plants will be installed include two schools
the local authority said the advantages of connecting to a solar power plant would include savings in electricity costs
In 2021, GEN-I launched a solar energy service for self-consumption for households that were unable to install photovoltaic panels on their own roofs

Cleaner flying may be an option in the not-too-distant future
long disregarded as impractical because batteries couldn’t match the power of liquid fuel
Flying from JFK to Sweden on electricity may not happen next year
but a large percentage of flights are regional hops and are within the range of newer
“Marketplace Tech’s” Jed Kim spoke with Graham Warwick
They talked about the latest iterations of electric planes and the potential for electric flight to reinvigorate regional air travel
The following is an edited transcript of their conversation
Graham Warwick: NASA started talking about electric propulsion probably back in about 2010 and pretty much got laughed out of the room
Jed Kim: If they were laughed out of the room
Warwick: It doesn’t look practical when you first look at it
because we know that batteries can’t store enough energy to fly an airplane
when you first start talking about electric
And aircrafts are very sensitive to weight
they just don’t carry anywhere near enough energy
But what’s happened is batteries have got better
people have begun to change the way they think about airplanes
they’ve been able to come up with designs that are practical
We’re in an unusual time for aviation in that traditionally
aviation has not been a very fruitful market for entrepreneurs and startups
It takes a lot of money and a long time to develop an airplane
So that’s never been a market that has brought the Silicon Valley type of thinking
But we’re in an era where that is happening
because the electric technology is so readily available
We have a lot of people who are entering the market — it’s in the hundreds
Just the air taxi ones that would operate inside cities
probably 200 different projects on the way around the world
If you were to go back into the ’80s or ’70s
people were used to flying from small cities to big cities in little airplanes
those regional airplanes got bigger and bigger
and the airlines operating them got swallowed up by the big airlines
So the actual level of air service that you get if you’re in a small city is worse now than it was 20 or 30 years ago
because that regional airline thing doesn’t exist the same way that it did back then
And the reason is that the aircraft are expensive to operate
So people are pursuing electric aircraft to see if you can get the cost of operating aircraft down low enough
You could then start having the ticket price low enough to get people out of the cars and out of their buses and into airplanes
Warwick: We’ve got to get the rules in place to certify these things
For the regulators like the [Federal Aviation Administration] to be able to say that these aircraft are safe
There’s already an initial set of regulations in Europe that companies can design to to prove their aircraft is safe
They have several companies that are already in the certification of their aircraft
So they’re providing information to the FAA to prove they’re safe
There are prototypes flying today that will probably be some experimental flights in cities and in short-range flights next year
And people are talking about sort of commercial service
certainly by the middle of the next decade
you will see some level of commercial service with these aircrafts
Kim: And how long until your average person like me can expect to fly on an electric plane
Because of the pressure on emissions from aviation … we are now hearing manufacturers like Airbus seriously talk about at least introducing some degree of electric hybridization
Warwick: Most people who fly in what we consider as large aircraft — like a 737 or an Airbus A320
which are carrying 200 or 300 people now — they’re farther away
Electric technology is going to take a lot of development before it can begin to power aircraft of that size
But because of the pressure on emissions from aviation
we are now hearing manufacturers like Airbus seriously talk about at least introducing some degree of electric hybridization in their next generation of aircraft
So they could have aircraft in development in the early part of the next decade that are at least partially electrically powered
There are ways — a bit like your hybrid car — it’s the way you introduce this technology
and it didn’t take long before the all-electric Tesla came along
the technology wasn’t quite ready to make them all electric
that’s kind of the same with big airplanes
So they are talking about beginning development of big airplanes with some degree of hybridization in the early years of the next decade
Want to get a look at one of the electric planes that turned heads at the Paris Air Show? The World Economic Forum’s site has a profile of a plane from Israeli company Eviation
It seats nine and can travel close to 650 miles
Electric flight is still developing, which means there are hiccups. The Verge has a story on a demo flight that crashed into a Norwegian lake recently (the two people on that plane survived unharmed)
It comes as the country aims to make all domestic flights electric by 2040
I asked Warwick how much of a setback the crash was
and he pointed out that plenty of loss-of-power incidents happen with fossil fuel-powered flights
Finally, going from electric planes to electric cars, CNBC reports that Tesla is now offering its own car insurance
But the company said it’ll expand to other states
The company said its plans could cost as much as 30% less than competitors’ plans
