50 are also the years of the cozy Hiša Franko house
but of the enormous passion that lives daily in this restaurant through everything that is created
This is the current chapter in one of the most deserving gastronomic destinations in the world
You will have to cross the Italian border and go a few kilometers on Slovenian territory to arrive at the home of one of the most energetic and talented chefs the history of cuisine (grandmothers aside) has ever had
among the respected smells enclosed within the walls of the three-starred restaurant Hiša Franko
Surely the name will not sound new to you after the success of the Chef's Table program on Netflix in 2016
the nomination of Ana Roš as best female chef in 2017
the three stars recently awarded by the Michelin guide (actually four considering the green star as well)
especially to realize why this is one of these rare places that can be counted on the fingers of two hands
and a graduate of international and diplomatic studies in Italy
she is a self-taught cook whose cuisine is able to tell the story of the seasons
She is an ambassador of the Slovenian land and actually
as anyone who succeeds in cooking in this way
getting closer to the environment of the lush Soča Valley and tasting it: the imposing mountains
the nature that offers something special in these parts between cheeses and meats
and related countless by-products from farmers
shepherds and producers of the farms located in the high mountains above Kobarid and Tolmin
with which the chef has established strong relationships
all are part of a circuit that Ana Roš has managed to create and make shine in the best of all worlds
and wild plants appear daily on a menu that has no half-measures
A tasting menu that boasts exceptional dishes that stand out for their originality of colors
flavors and textures and reflect the cook's committed vision of always following nature
respecting the seasons and drawing inspiration from her travels
Among the classics there is hardly a shortage of corn beignets
fenugreek and sour cream infused with toasted yeast
“50 Shades of Red": a menu of 15 dishes including 12 new creations
for those who choose to stop here for a few hours
kombucha at the hands of Davide Rovagnati and Anja Skrbinek
the best ever (there are also two wine pairing
one more classic and the other decidedly “funky” with natural and sui generis goodies)
and Ana has created a cohesive one that excels
starting with Yvonne Simon at the helm of the kitchen
Ana Roš has shown that cuisine can be a powerful vehicle for promoting the area
It thus remains not just a restaurant but a culinary manifesto
inviting people to rediscover nature through a dish and to approach food with awareness and respect
you can close your eyes and fully understand the environment of which the restaurant is a part,” Ana Roš's words

Text description provided by the architects. In the town of Bovec, a tourist center of Bovško and upper Soča valley, SoNo arhitekti designed a sports hotel. The location is surrounded by high Alpine peaks and Soča and Koritnica rivers. An impressive peak called Svinjak rises above the town and gives it a distinctive panorama.
Attractive views of the surrounding mountains and the shape of the plot itself determined the design of the hotel. There are two elongated rectangular solids, one parallel to the western boundary of the plot and the other to the eastern boundary. Where the two meet, a larger open space is formed that acts as a representative entrance lobby. It makes an impression with its height, namely, it spans through all four levels above the ground level.
© Miran KambičThey have a modern interior design in which one can sense a reference to the exterior of the building. Each room has a balcony that is oriented in such a way it offers guests the most attractive views of the beautiful surrounding mountains. On the third floor, a fitness center with a spa, a roof terrace, and service areas are located.
© Miran KambičThe roof and the upper three floors are light grey with dark grey accents in the form of the balconies and 4 windows that pop out of the facade plane
The hotel blends in nicely with the surrounding buildings and the mountain silhouette

(Kirsten Amor)It’s hard to imagine that Slovenia’s Soča Valley
a land of aquamarine river rapids and dense emerald forests
waterfalls gently tumbling down steep cliffs and dense
I had a hard time imagining that the area once resembled the barren and grey Soča Valley of Ernest Hemingway's novel
and in the fall when the rains came the leaves all fell from the chestnut trees and the branches were bare and the trunks black with rain
The vineyards were thin and bare-branched too and all the country wet and brown and dead with autumn.”
What’s even more difficult to imagine is that the valley was once part of the Isonzo Front
Approximately 1.7 million soldiers died or were mutilated for life fighting on the Isonzo Front
many losing their lives attempting to navigate the steep mountain slopes
fight through whiteout blizzards or traverse unsurpassable canyons
"The Soča Valley – and the Bovec area in particular – is unique because of its microclimate," said my Soča Rafting guide Jure Črnič
"With the Julian Alps on one side of us
the Bovec Basin and the deep canyons and rivers together
the weather can change quite suddenly – and with adverse conditions.”
the Soča river (known in Italian as the Isonzo river) ran north-south along what was then the border of Austria and Italy
opening a new 600km front when Italy declared war on Austria-Hungary on 23 May
A total of 12 major battles were fought there between 1915 and 1917
with the Italian side launching 11 of the 12 offensives
Despite the Austro-Hungarian Empire’s efforts to refurbish the old mountain pass defensives and fortify the jagged mountains that flanked its side of the river
causing the land that is now modern-day Slovenia to be annexed to Italy under the 1920 Treaty of Rapallo
many of the Soča Valley’s 300,000 residents were displaced to central Austria-Hungary to avoid the crossfire of the front line
while others were forced to relinquish their homes for soldiers’ barracks
and for the thousands of soldiers who were transported to the region and died there
the region underwent even greater transition
and many of the old WWI sites were left to decay in the wilderness
Italianization turned into occupation by Nazi German forces
and eventually the region was absorbed into Yugoslavia at the end of WWII
It wasn’t until 1991 that the Slovenes won independence
many Soča Valley residents have turned to adventure and cultural tourism to make a living
a 90km-long trail that divides some of the major sites of WWI and the natural highlights of the Soča Valley into five one-day sections
which has excellent vantage points of the Koritnica river gorge
Despite its strategic importance in defending the Mt Rombon mountain pass during the 1809 invasion of Napoleon
the Kluže fortress was outdated by the time WWI began
and it was partially destroyed by the Italian forces’ relentless artillery fire
The formidable grey stone structure that remains contrasts the peacefulness of the deep gorge and surrounding forests
Down the heavily-wooded trail approximately 4km to the southwest, the Walk of Peace opens onto a curved paved road, the trail markers pointing toward the Bovec WWI Military Cemetery: a tree-lined clearing with several small grey mounds poking up between the grasses
mass unmarked gravesites were hurriedly created to provide resting places and prevent disease from spreading; Italian and Hungarian soldiers were buried side by side
the Italian remains were exhumed and transferred to an Italian military cemetery in Caporetto
The remains of more than 600 Austro-Hungarian soldiers were then gathered from surrounding makeshift cemeteries and buried here at Bovec
no date: the grave was simply adorned with a carved cross
searching for some identification of the person beneath
Again and again I zigzagged through the rows of tombstones
but none contained any information about the soldiers who had died
I was overwhelmed with the injustice that so many would give their lives only for their sacrifice to be forgotten with the disappearance of their identity
Continuing about 1km southwest on the trail, I passed the Bovec town limit. Here, a brown and silver sign marked the entrance to Ravelnik, another former Austro-Hungarian artillery fortification. Adorned with rusted military gear such as bullets, helmets and barbed wire, the sign bore the words “Isonzo Front” in several languages.
Narrow trenches lined with grey stones lead to a concrete doorway built into the hill. Large, rusted sheets of curved ribbed metal formed a protected roof over the trenches’ open sections. Despite the pockets of green fauna and shafts of sunlight that escaped through the foliage, the site was eerily still, creating an unsettling atmosphere.
Today, Ravelnik’s trenches have been restored to their former state, and re-enactments and guided tours have been scheduled to celebrate the centenary of WWI. On the day I was there though, the only sound was the scuttling of my feet as I timidly passed through the concrete doorway, which led to a network of caves and tunnels deep inside the hill.
Stumbling through one of the tunnels, I wondered how soldiers could have possibly fought and lived in this pitch black, with bombs exploding overhead and machine guns firing. Rain is frequent in Bovec, which made me think of the quagmire of mud that likely gathered in this cave.
Emerging into the sunlight, I headed toward a small wooden shack that once served as the soldier’s first aid station. Inside, there were two bunk beds, a modest collection of food tins and black-and-white photographs of the site during the war. Looking at the images of the soldiers, seeing their camaraderie and snapshots of their daily life, I understood how this place could have felt like home, no matter how short a time they were here.
About 3km southwest of Bovec, closer to Kal-Koritnica, the end of the Walk of Peace's first section, the Soča river picks up speed; the fast-moving current and wildflower-lined banks create a striking contrast between the valley’s natural beauty and grim history.
The Soča river is nicknamed The Emerald Beauty due to its emerald-green water, which is renowned for its clarity. I could see schools of endemic marble trout and graylings lazily swimming along the river’s floor between rocks, despite being several metres deep. Basking in the sunshine and colourful landscape, I felt the heaviness of the day's earlier stops lift.
As the sky began to turn a faint orange, I rose to leave, and only then did I realise the carvings on the boulder next to me:
I traced my fingers through the sharp lettered edges, and marvelled at how, even with nature’s recovery, WWI’s mark could never disappear from this remote pocket of the world.

While planning a ski trip to eastern Italy and Slovenia in the 2016 season I have discovered that the lifts & pistes on the Kanin/Slovenian side of the mountain have been closed for the past couple of seasons due to a 'malfunction' of the cable car and the subsequent bankruptcy of the resort operator
And according to the Bovec tourist information office there is no official word on when they might reopen
Having enjoyed visiting the Soca valley during spring a decade ago I thought it would be nice to visit again in winter
particularly as they have the highest elevation ski area in the Julian Alps
Lets hope they can get their act together soon so that we can spend some money there

If you're the adventurous type traveling in Slovenia, you'll most probably head to the Soca Valley for some extreme sports
fresh from the mountains. Might be tempting to jump in
The kind that numbs your toes in a few seconds
You'll feel the thermal shock of a lifetime
that might be the thrill you were seeking
That's an important note for anyone planning to do canyoning or rafting – make sure you're physically fit and prepared for the icy sting of the river
Here's everything else you need to know to have a safe adventure in Slovenia
Ticks are another problem in forested and long grass areas
so don't assume the cold weather keeps these bitey little beasts at bay
Use tick repellents and wear long sleeves when hiking in wilderness areas
Do a thorough check at the end of each day to make sure no bugs have latched on
Common spots to look include behind your ears
the tick has been fully embedded in the skin for two to three days
Always do a thorough check of yourself (and your travel partner) if you have been out into wilderness areas for ticks
check your boots and backpack as ticks can sometimes sneak their way into these items.
There are two species of venomous snakes in Slovenia
note well the appearance of the snake and seek help immediately
and you probably won't even need antiserum
But it's better to play it safe regardless
If a bear knows you're coming it will usually scamper away
Slovenia is one of the safest places to visit
The biggest danger you're likely to face is falling into a pretty lake because you were too distracted by the peaceful backdrop of the snowy alps

Did you know that you can ski for seven days in Slovenia for less than one day at some major U.S
The Julian Alps are everything a ski vacation in Europe should be: a dramatic alpine setting
snowy valleys with ski resorts dotted about
fairy tale alpine castles…did we miss anything
and the accessible cost of an incredible skiing experience will fill you with even more joy
Where are these magical mountains and have you not visited yet
Follow the arc of Europe’s Alps just a little farther east than the oft-skied hubs of Switzerland
mountainous nation slightly smaller than New Jersey that’s home to a scant two million residents
Slovenia flies under the radar of the western skiing world
who aren’t aware of its impressive mountains and proud
from ski mountaineering to alpine and Nordic racing
All of that manifests in a string of joyous ski areas scattered throughout the country from tiny local family spots to international destinations
Slovenians have held fast to their own identity despite a long history of occupations from the Romans
to being absorbed into the Austro-Hungarian Empire
then into the Soviet Union’s sphere ended in today’s happy independence when the Slovenian-speaking region split from Yugoslavia in 1991
The stark alpine geography is a big part of that identity
and in fact have a saying that citizens become truly Slovenian only when they’ve climbed to the summit of Triglav
the highest peak in the Julian Alps and the nation
Triglav and the mountains also feature prominently in the country’s legends and folklore
and the stylized image of a tri-summit peak on the national flag is
a stylized image of Triglav (which means three heads)
it makes sense despite its tiny population
Slovenia consistently produces powerhouse athletes in every skiing discipline
It’s well worth a visit if you’re craving skiing soul and a fresh adventure—and we’d be willing to bet the first trip won’t be your last
too—you can buy seven days in Slovenia for less than one day at large U.S
Lodging in mountain towns is mainly family run lodges or modern Slovenian-owned hotels (thankfully
global charmless or over the top luxury chains don’t have a hold here)
Traditional Slovenian cuisine is more like eastern Europe than neighboring Italy
and you may or may not find things such as a breakfast buffet of mainly pickled things
Just immerse yourself in the glory of new experiences
it is a vibrant locavore culture and you’ll find delicious locally-sourced
Given that it’s a bit more off the beaten path
and an old fashioned ski adventure at its finest
Slovenes are in general friendly and welcoming to travelers – especially skiers
Most of the younger generation speak Slovenian and English (older people will often speak Slovenian and Russian)
it’s always prescient to have couple words to endear you to the locals (followed here by some loosely correct phonetic spellings in English
Here’s a handy guide to some of the local lingo:
The Julian Alps are the crown jewel of Slovenian skiing and home to most of the large resorts
as well as community rope tows in occasional operation tucked up in bucolic
Here are a couple of don’t miss ski destinations:
Located on the Slovenian and Italian border, Kanin offers some of the best, big mountain terrain and freeride skiing in the area—which is saying something. The Italian side is Sella Nevea
serious big terrain for off piste and backcountry
the Slovenian village at the base of Kanin is the place to stay
sleep and eat (Sella Nevea’s village is a small
charming old village surrounded by natural beauty
It also offers well-developed visitor amenities and the most complete year-round adventure tourism you’ll find in the region
This ski area sits on a high plateau above the beautiful Lake Bohinj
to which you take a tram to the base village
and the skiing is super playful and rolling inbounds
Off piste and out of bounds offers forests
Mariborski is outside of the Julian Alps in the northeast near the city of Maribor
but you will find how Slovenian skiers get their heart and soul and passion for skiing and winter sports
Ljubljana (pronounced ‘Loob-liana’) is Slovenia’s capital city and serviced by major carriers such as Delta, Swiss Air, Lufthansa, and local codeshare partners via European hubs such as Paris, Geneva, Munich and others.
Arrange to rent a car from Ljubljana: there are public transit and bus systems but given the rural alpine locations of the best skiing, and especially if you plan on any backcountry or hut adventures, you’ll need your own vehicle.
Testing skis and winter gear is hard work (just ask our boot testers)—but someone's gotta do it.
I'm the director of brand marketing at Conde Nast Traveler.
We have been cooped up for a bit in quarantine,
so we decided to take a road trip to Slovenia.
We chose Slovenia for the incredible scenery,
so it's a pretty easy five to six hour drive
to our first stop in the capital of Ljubljana.
We had to stop and get what's called a vignette.
that allows our car to continue driving on through.
the capital of Ljubljana, which is our first stop.
Okay, so we are headed out into the city center
And we're gonna spend the morning in Ljubljana.
So we've been checking the Covid numbers every single night,
and yesterday there were only 14 new ones in Slovenia.
but obviously still taking every precaution.
It's crazy to see how these like tourist cities
People are laid back, nobody's rushing,
it doesn't feel like you're in a European capital.
Europe in general is how dog friendly it is.
I'm a little obsessed with dogs and especially my dog,
[Leila] Now we are on our way to Lake Bohinj.
We've heard a lot of amazing things about this lake.
There's something about the water here
that just makes you feel so fresh and so good.
grabbed some breakfast and now we are getting ready
to head out on a hike that we've heard a lot about.
Mala Osojnica is actually the hike where we are heading to.
It's about 40-45 minutes, but it's pretty steep.
But at the top, there's a gorgeous view overlooking...
because on our way down it started pouring,
We are grabbing some lunch on the shores of Lake Bled,
and I'm thinking that we're gonna go rent a boat.
from when it rained on us earlier on the hike.
Don't make it look like it's so hard.
We've gotten a lot of recommendations to go here.
So we're gonna start our day doing this.
One of the most beautiful places I personally
So we are making our way out of Vintgar Gorge.
One thing that they don't tell you is that
it's about a 45 minute hike back to the start of the gorge
So we were a little bit unprepared for that,
but we are enjoying ourselves because it's nature
and this is really what we came to Slovenia for.
and figure out what we're gonna do tomorrow,
what stops we're gonna make on our way from Bled to Bovec.
It's supposed to be a really beautiful drive,
We're heading to our first stop in the Soča Valley,
So in order to get there, we're breaking up the day.
We're gonna head north and stop at Kranjska Gora.
And then we'll continue on through the Vršič Pass,
We're gonna have some coffee, relax here for a little bit,
Someone got a little bit scared and climbed up here.
We just got back from rafting the Soča River.
There was no video footage, but it was super fun.
and we're gonna drive along the valley today.
we stopped in Kanal and found this secluded beach.
So we are hanging out here for a few hours
I mean I know I keep saying that everything
is just beautiful, but, Slovenia did not disappoint.
I really had no idea how beautiful this country was.
We're gonna have some time off before the dinners.
So we are headed to our last stop on our Slovenia road trip,
We are gonna enjoy our day at our last stop
It was really great to be able to take a vacation,
I think one of the best parts about taking a road trip
is like not having to be in a rush anywhere.
The places that we've grown up are so different,
and living in Europe, it's made me appreciate
You can say something nice to me now, if you want.

the site itself is accessible only by climbing or helicopter – the modules and loads are prepared according to the maximum weight and equilibrium limits
its position within the wilderness requires respect of natural resources ensuring the shelter stability while having a minimal impact on the rugged terrain
the brief was to develop self-contained wooden shell
which resist extreme conditions on top of the mountainall images © janez martincic
the cabin is organized across three resting platforms
the modest space offers a simple but unique experience as the platforms open up to the large glazed window facing towards the mountain valley
the overall project is a study to further develop architecture catered to extreme and remote conditions
kanin is a location set above the small town of bovec
an area known for its resorts and history from world war 1 and this particular site was chosen for its uninterrupted views over both slovenia and italy.

NarniaWeb | Netflix's Narnia Movies
First up, Nika has posted a couple of photos of the Telmarine bridge and camp at her blog – check it out!
According to previous reports, one sequence will involve the freeing of the River God when the bridge is spectacularly destroyed with soldiers running over it. The River God is being created with CG by effects house Framestore
In addition, 24ur.com has reported on the current status of filming in Bovec. Thanks very much to Monika for her transcript and translation of this story. You can check out the video at 24ur.com
though we have a few screenshots for you below as well
Filming on The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian has now begun in Bovec with a team of hundreds
But this year’s largest Disney film project
is wrapped in a shroud of mystery even after the first few days of filming
Only a few things are known – for instance
that they have built a 60 metre long wooden bridge
more information will become available next week when the producers and their assistants arrive in Bovec
only those who are involved in the filming have permission to enter the location
Security man: “You must turn off the news camera because they are filming there.”
“Narnia” could not even be seen from the air
because the air space above Bovec is closed
It’s also forbidden to reach the area by the river
Tourist: “We can’t get through because it’s closed
They’re probably filming there.”
Rafting club member: “The filming might have some implications on our current business
but we also think that it’ll bring some benefits in the end.”
This project is also very popular with the Bovec community
which is hoping for the possibility to built a “mini Narnia” attraction
Mayor of Bovec: “Unfortunately we haven’t had a chance to talk about that yet
because the producers aren’t coming until Friday and Monday.”
That’s when they’ll fill up the last places in the already crammed hotels and private rooms
I think all the accommodation is filled to capacity.”
Kanin Hotel: “We’re very pleased with the number of guests and visitors
Now we’re expecting the filming team
who have reserved three quarters of our hotel until the 17th of July.”
In spite of the liveliness that has been brought by the Disney film team
Bovec remains an idyllic and peaceful town
They are expecting some bustle only next week
They expect that there will be some traffic problems
and are announcing that there will be 15 minute road blocks between Zaga and Bovec

Slovenia is a green retreatWith its myriad charms
Slovenia could win over even the most demanding of travelers
More than half of Slovenia is covered with forest
and in 2016 it was declared the "world's first green destination" by a Netherlands-based nonprofit
We were listening intently to the audio version of Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms
and we almost swerved off the road in our car when a trench mortar shell hit Frederic Henry
I tried to reconcile the scenery outside the car window with what Hemingway describes in his classic novel
The "picturesque front," his narrator called this area of present-day Slovenia where intense fighting occurred between the Italians and Austro-Hungarian forces during the First World War
Never mind that my young kids were riled up in the back seat
complaining loudly about the lack of pop music on the radio
now in hysterics after their grandfather’s blunder
They were quieted when we rounded a bend and the Soča River (Isonzo in Italian) flashed into view
the color changing in the sunlight: sometimes emerald
The river splashes through dramatic gorges
the white sand and limestone rocks at the bottom reflecting the water's stunning hues
The Soča Valley is so beautiful that instead of taking a cue from Hemingway's pared-down prose
From our rental house in the town of Bovec
who was cycling up Slovenia’s highest road pass (5,285 feet)
It was the end of February last year and the Vršič Pass
a formidable ascent with dozens of serpentine switchbacks
Russian prisoners of war in 1915-1916 built the road as a supply route for the Austro-Hungarians battling at the Isonzo Front
The mountains rise in dramatic craggy formations
their cliffs coated in snow as we climbed higher
Many of the POWs died as a result of avalanches and sickness
Pierre was goaded on by our car following closely behind him and doggedly pedaled the rental bike
a bulky mountain model instead of the carbon road bike he was used to
go!" We handed a water bottle and snacks through the car window
surrounded by the snowy peaks of the Julian Alps and Triglav National Park
We leaped out of the car into the raging wind and attempted to walk through the snowdrifts
This was not just a vacation keyed to the kids' winter school break but also a reunion bringing together far-flung relatives
my aunt and uncle had taken the train south from their home in Prague
had driven his rental car from Switzerland
Our respective journeys to get there illustrate how this tiny country is a nexus at the crossroads of Europe — wedged among Italy
the borders have been fluid in this contested land
sitting at the junction of ancient routes and civilizations
Slovenia became the country we know today in 1991
My aunt and uncle — practiced mushroom foragers in the Czech forests — love hiking
and now the Isonzo Front.) Pierre had a cycling goal
(The krafi pear-stuffed dumplings were a hit
the world-famous restaurant run by chef Ana Ros in Kobarid)
there wasn’t any snow in the valleys for cross-country skiing
locals told us that late February had brought record-high temperatures
But there were plenty of other outdoor adventures — from hiking to zip-lining in Europe’s largest zip-line park
And there was still downhill skiing in the high-altitude mountains
Bovec is known as the gateway to some of the best slopes in Slovenia
adrenaline junkies flock here for kayaking
we soared over river gorges and waterfalls
One of the guides told us to look out for trout down below — some getting so big they could eat ducklings
we spied the shadows of fish in the brilliant blue
Our guide also raved about the region’s thermal springs and the clean water that occupying Italians had hoped to take out of the country in aqueducts years ago
It may have been the “picturesque front,” but it was also perilous
12 major battles took place along the Soča River
We scrambled over the Austrian military forts of Kluže and Hermann and visited the Italian ossuary at Kobarid
It’s hard to imagine trench warfare in fortresslike mountains where avalanches were as much a threat as artillery shelling
Hemingway’s inspiration for A Farewell to Arms was his stint as a volunteer ambulance driver for the American Red Cross in Italy
his affair with nurse Agnes von Kurowsky became fodder for his tragic love story
Today a hiking trail called the Walk of Peace follows the Isonzo Front
linking many of the places and historic sites described in the book
The war museum at Kobarid (known as Caporetto in Italian) is particularly poignant
detailing the events of the First World War including the 12th Battle of the Isonzo
this was the most brutal armed conflict ever experienced on Slovenian soil and is considered one of the biggest mountain battles in history
Hemingway once described traveling “all along the Front
from the mountains to the sea,” and now hikers can likewise go from the Julian Alps to the Adriatic Sea on the Walk of Peace
we encountered scenery that stopped us in our tracks: Purple crocuses pushing their noses through carpets of moss
sparkling rivulets rushing into the crystalline river that carved the Soča Valley
"There were trees along both sides of the road and through the right line of trees I saw the river
The river was low and there were stretches of sand and pebbles with a narrow channel of water and sometimes the water spread like a sheen over the pebbly bed

Moroccan authorities have said four suspects arrested over the murder had pledged allegiance to Islamic State in a video posted on social media before the killings
The women were found with knife wounds to the neck
"When it comes to the assessment of the video that purportedly shows the killings
there is still a certain amount of technical analysis and assessment to be done," Norway's National Crime Investigation Service said in a statement
there is nothing concrete to show that this video is not real."
Norwegian police were not immediately available for further comment

Slovenia’s POP TV channel has recently reported that parts of Prince Caspian will be filmed in the beautiful Soca River region
The story of Prince Caspian involves several memorable scenes that occur along various Narnian waterways
You can read our translated version of the report
(Thank you to our wonderful translators for your assistance!)
Although the filmmakers searched for locations all around Europe
the Soca River and its surroundings proved to be some of the most memorable
They decided to shoot part of the story in Slovenia following successful talks with the Bovec municipal council and officials
Mayor of Bovec: “They fell in love with the landscape and the views of the river
It was these key points that attracted them
We’re still coordinating some details
but the procedures are underway so there shouldn’t be any obstacles.”
Filming in the region will begin in May or June next year

- Mayfield High School alumna Concetta Piunno
has four paintings in a touring Slovenian art exhibition
The exhibition is organized by the Republic of Slovenia consulate general in Cleveland
“The exhibit is a celebration,” said Jurek Zmauc
consulate general of the Republic of Slovenia in Cleveland
It is inspired by the 20-year anniversary of Slovenian independence and 20 years of diplomatic relations between Slovenia and the United States
The exhibit started in Cleveland last October and moved to Illinois in December
Future stops include Pittsburgh for July and August
There are four other artists included in the exhibition: painter Gorazd Jordan from Maribor
Slovenia; painter Meta Novak from Milwaukee; painter Lynn Miller of Chagrin Falls; and jewelry maker Dobrila Pintar from Chicago
The couple traveled to Slovenia in the early 1990s and while in Ljubljana
Piunno felt inspired to paint its landscape and culture
Three of Piunno’s water color paintings on exhibit are of Slovenian towns — Bovec
Ptuj and Piran — while the fourth illustrates the “Dragon Bridge,” a road bridge located in Ljubljana
The painting depicts one of the four dragons that stand erect on each corner of the bridge
She attended Holy Redeemer School in Cleveland’s Collinwood neighborhood
It detailed a “Breck Girl” shampoo advertisement in colored pencils
These advertisements gained notoriety during the 1940s and 1950s and portrayed idealized images of American women
Her teacher commended her ability to render the “Breck Girl.” This is when Piunno knew she had a flare for art
“My subjects have included portraits of people
“Anything which I feel is worthwhile to paint for posterity
My hope is that my art work will continue on for many years to come
bringing some joy to those who enjoy seeing them.”
The Slovenian art exhibit is a lucky opportunity to get art out to the public
“I want to leave something substantial behind for my kids and grandkids to remember me,” Piunno said
but her roots are deep in Mayfield Heights
She graduated from Mayfield High School in 1960 and from Notre Dame College in South Euclid in 1964 with a bachelor’s degree in education
She continued her studies 20 years later at Cleveland State University and graduated with a master’s degree in guidance and counseling
Piunno is retired after spending most of her career working in Euclid schools
The Slovenian art exhibit continues into fall
Piunno’s “Dragon Bridge” painting sold shortly after the exhibit began
The other three paintings are still looking for homes

the Lilliputian nation of Slovenia is one of Europe’s lesser-known golden ingots

The next morning, we headed into the countryside with Dragan, our driver-guide to the dramatic Vintgar Gorge, where we walked along the wooden pathway clinging to the sides of a deep, rocky crevasse. We crisscrossed the roaring Rodovna River
The beech leaves were quivering in the breeze
Soon the forests would be aflame with colour
We crossed clear rivers and gushing brooks born in the mountains and vast
glacial lakes form the backdrop of the Slovenian northwest
We found the short driving distances between Slovenia’s most beautiful sights very convenient
and the unpeopled countryside hikes felt as though we had the entire place to ourselves

Bovec is a base for adventure sports such as rafting, canyoning, zip lining and hiking. While rain dampened our rafting plans, we trekked the scenic hills around Lapena village
Driving towards Ljubljana via the 50-hairpin bends of the dramatic Vrisić pass, we encountered the most spectacular vistas filled with tall forests and snow-painted mountains and marvelled at how this achingly beautiful corner of Europe has remained a secret

The smallest of countries have the power to amaze and educate in ways that you could have never guessed
Take this example of the car train in Slovenia
Back in the latter part of the last century here in the UK there used to be a car transport system called ‘Motorail’
A great way of transporting you and your car on long distance routes like from London to Inverness in Scotland or London to Penzance in the far west of Cornwall
Those services finished at various times and areas around the UK and finally came to an end in 2005
Some 50 years after the idea was introduced by the then British Rail on the London to Perth route around 1955
I was rather pleasantly surprised on a recent visit to Slovenia that such a service is still in use
With around 12 trains operating daily on the route between Bohinjska Bistrica and Most na Soči
Arriving at Bohinjska Bistrica for the journey to Most na Soči Slovenia
Not the 400mile routes as in the UK but a mere direct route of around 15 miles taking about 35 minutes
However what the service does do is to cut out a two-hour drive around a high mountain range pass
Therefore the decision is really easy…let the train take the strain
A quick drive up onto the platform and a drop down ramp provides access direct onto the flat bed open rail car
There is the option to stay in the vehicle or ride in the 30-seater carriage at the front of the train
Not long before you are in the dark of 6 kilometre Bohinj Tunnel under the Julian Alps
On the route from Bohinjska Bistrica station within seconds you are in a six and half kilometre long Bohinj tunnel
Cut out over a hundred years ago by engineers working for the Austria Hungarian Empire who ruled over this area at that time
Their plan was to connect its only seaport of Trieste on the Adriatic to the north and the western part of Austria
allowing easy onward connection to Germany with both imports and exports
As the Suez canal had opened recently at that time the port was in a good position to reap the benefits
Ready for the vehicles the unique train at Bohinjska Bistrica station waiting to be transported on the car train Slovenia
With a huge mountain range of the Julian Alps in the way the tunnel was conceived and built
It runs under the 1,498 metre high Mount Kobla
Travelling this way was for me a first but it was charming and enjoyable
Once through and out of the tunnel the views of the mountains
Just one of those experiences you come across whilst travelling that show how you learn not only about where places are but their history

Moroccan police arrested on Thursday (local time) three people it had sought in a manhunt over the killing of two female tourists from Norway and Denmark in a suspected militant attack in the Atlas Mountains
The bodies of Louisa Vesterager Jespersen (24) from Denmark and Maren Ueland (28) from Norway
were found on Monday in an isolated area near Imlil
The authorities had said a suspect arrested in tourist hub Marrakech on Tuesday was a member of a militant group
Danish intelligence said earlier on Thursday that Islamic State could be behind the killings
Three more suspects sought by police had also been arrested in Marrakech
the Moroccan Bureau for Judicial Investigations said in a statement
The evidence discovered so far pointed to a terrorist motive
"The video and preliminary investigation according to the Moroccan authorities indicate that the killings may be related to the terrorist organisation Islamic State," the Danish intelligence service said in a statement
"This is a case of an unusually bestial killing of two totally innocent young women," it said
had posted on Facebook about her upcoming trip
Any of you guys who's around by then or any mountain friends who knows something about Mount Toubkal?"
when around 17 people were killed in a bombing of a restaurant in Marrakech
"This is a brutal and meaningless attack on innocent people
which we react to with disgust and condemnation," said Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg in a statement
Morocco's Central Bureau for Judicial Investigations
says it has so far broken up 57 militant cells

For those missing shows like The Witcher or Game of Thrones, be prepared to meet your next high fantasy TV obsession
The Wheel of Time is based on a book series of the same name by Robert Jordan
The series' popularity sparked a roleplaying game
With the plot of the books (and the show) inspired by concepts found in Taoism
part of the fantastical elements are the locales
which were created onscreen by a variety of beautiful filming locations
Here's what we know about where Season 1 of The Wheel of Time was filmed
The Wheel of Time has been in Amazon's plans since 2019, and principal photography reportedly began filming in September 2019 and wrapped early in March 2020. However, like many television shows and films around that time, the coronavirus pandemic halted progress until roughly April 2021 and wrapped for good in May 2021, per The Cinemaholic.
For anyone curious about a second season, The Wheel of Time has reportedly already begun filming again for Season 2, which will last from July 2021 through February 2022. The show's production is primarily based in Prague, Czech Republic, with extensive on-location shoots. However, The Cinemaholic notes that a film studio called Jordan Studios (named for the author of the books) has reportedly been set up in Prague’s Letňany district for scenes that require a little extra movie magic.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Wheel Of Time (@thewheeloftime)
The show is set primarily in an ancient world
so production filming locations reflected natural beauty rather than modern marvels
Filming took place across the Czech Republic in locations such as Dolský mill and Terezín
If Game of Thrones fans thought something about The Wheel of Time's setting looked familiar
The final filming location identifiable to viewers is Bovec
The difficult terrain of the area made filming a challenge
with materials reportedly transported by hand and ATV to get the perfect shot of the rugged landscape
these natural locations chosen for Season 1 fit perfectly into the world of the show
Rumor has it that Season 2 will be filmed largely on location in Morocco to accommodate the setting of Aiel Waste
While fans haven't spotted any confirmation of this rumor
it's safe to say that with a reported budget of $10 million
The Wheel of Time will spare no expense bringing the books to life in beautiful new ways
The first three episodes of The Wheel of Time are now available for streaming on Amazon Prime
