season wrapped up today in Koper Paris Olympic gold medalists Janja Garnbret and Toby Roberts came out on top both besting their competitors by a wide margin on the final routes of the event Garnbret was the last climber to take the stage a familiar situation for the world’s best comp climber as she’s very rarely not in first place coming out of any round She climbed the route with apparent ease in front of her Slovenian home crowd and looked like a top was in her sights before a footslip sent her groundward The fall came as she moved towards hold 47 Team USA member Annie Sanders earned bronze It was the 17-year-old’s first ever Lead World Cup podium “The crowd is absolutely phenomenal,” said Garnbret after winning her third Lead World Cup gold of the season a few years ago when the World Cup was in Kranj [Slovenia] I know I had a hard time performing there because of the cheering and maybe the extra pressure to perform in front of the home crowd but I’ve gotten used to it and now I love climbing in front of the home crowd with all the kids screaming and cheering I absolutely enjoyed myself on the wall today “I’m still a bit frustrated because I didn’t top I enjoyed the route a lot and I did everything right – no unnecessary moves and I felt like I was cruising it was just a millisecond of not being focused and that’s why I slipped The men’s final route was a difficult one with the first six climbers of the evening falling at hold 31 or below Roberts was the second-last athlete to climb and he moved up the route in his usual intense and engaging style He looked tired as he entered the upper headwall but kept fighting through a tough sequence of small crimps Sorato Anraku of Japan came out last and made quick work of the route He looked fresher than Roberts as he entered the headwall but had an unexpected hand slip on one of the crimps securing the gold for Roberts and silver for himself really tricky,” said Roberts after his second Lead World Cup win of the year “I was a bit nervous especially at the start as there were a few sketchy moves – the start But my whole goal of the competition was to enjoy it and that was the perfect finish I couldn’t have had any more moves even if I wanted to so I’m really happy I got the most out of myself.” Get the digital edition of Gripped for your chosen platform: The Port of Koper, Slovenia, has signed a contract with the Kolektor Koling group and its partner CGP to extend the northern part of Pier I of the port’s container terminal. The €152.9m project includes constructing a 326-metre quayside, seven hectares of stacking and handling areas, and carrying out essential dredging and power infrastructure upgrades. Also, the new quay will feature a reinforced concrete frame with transverse, longitudinal, and rail girders anchored to piles, topped by a concrete slab designed to accommodate STS cranes with a 30-metre rail gauge. Construction will begin in early 2025 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2027, the Port said. Once operational, the extension, along with the installation of new STS cranes and redevelopment of existing storage areas, is set to boost the container terminal’s capacity from 1.5m TEU to 1.8m TEU annually. But the night belonged to Garnbret as she took a victory lap in front of her home crowd with another dominant display. Garnbret came into the final as the top qualifier and prevailed with a winning score of 46+ with Austria’s Jessica Pilz finishing second with 40+. Annie Sanders of the US rounded out the podium with 39+ The Slovenian was the last climber out and easily navigated her way along the route before surpassing Pilz to claim the victory. Garnbret nevertheless forged ahead hellbent on reaching the top hold before she slipped before a crucial jump. “If it wasn’t a World Cup on home turf, I wouldn’t be competing and would have stopped after the Olympics,” Garnbret told the IFSC. “I needed to perform in front of the home crowd to give the fans something back because they give me so much love and support.” Janja Garnbret: The importance of sharing my voiceThe Olympic sport climbing champion discusses the responsibility of inspiring younger generations "It's not always sunny and flowers I don't want to be a perfect role model I want to be a real role model," she told us in this exclusive interview Roberts lived up to his newfound status as the king of climbing winning the first IFSC World Cup Lead competition since his triumph in Paris 2024 Roberts was embroiled in a close tussle with Olympic runner-up Anraku Sorato of Japan with the result again tipping in favour of the British climber Anraku was the top qualifier into the final with Roberts in a close second to set up a mouth-watering repeat of the Olympics Roberts lay down the marker as the seventh climber on the route as he reached hold 40 moving into first place with only Anraku to come Anraku made steady progress but could only make it to 35 to again settle for second place behind Roberts with newly-crowned European champion Sam Avezou of France finishing third on 31+ Climbing in front of the President of Slovenia the two-time Olympic champion Janja Garnbret continued her winning ways with Lead gold at the IFSC World Cup Koper 2024 Garnbret was clear of her goals when she signed up to climb in Koper – to give something back to the adoring Slovenian fans that have supported her throughout her career With two tops in qualification and the only top in the semi-final and a hold 46+ climb was enough for yet another win although such is the Slovenians mentality that it wasn’t the perfect finish she wanted: “I’m still a bit frustrated because I didn’t top I enjoyed the route a lot and I did everything right no unnecessary moves and I felt like I was cruising it was just a millisecond of not being focussed and that’s why I slipped Talking about that wild and supportive crowd Garnbret said: “The crowd is absolutely phenomenal a few years ago when the World Cup was in Kranj I know I had a hard time performing there because of the cheering and maybe the extra pressure to perform in front of the home crowd I absolutely enjoyed myself on the wall today.” Joining Garnbret on the podium at Paris 2024 Austria’s Jessica Pilz once again stepped up to take silver this time with a hold 40+ climb for another World Cup medal The third and final medallist was USA’s Annie Sanders who reached hold 39+ for the first Lead World Cup medal of her fledgling career Australia’s Oceania Mackenzie was fourth on hold 38+ with France’s Zélia Avezou closely behind in fifth on hold 37+ Great Britain’s Erin Mcneice was sixth on hold 34+ Austria’s Mattea Pötzi was seventh on hold 32+ and Italy’s Laura Rogora couldn’t replicate her IFSC European Championships form finishing eighth on hold 19+ Full women’s results: https://ifsc.hopp.to/kp24wlr once again stood atop the podium taking his third IFSC Lead World Cup gold medal with a hold 40 climb Roberts and Japan’s Anraku Sorato were at the top of the order after qualifications and semi-finals with Anraku the last to climb leaving Roberts to watch what his friend and rival could do the gold was secured for the British climber but it wasn’t a time for celebration as all the finalists knew Anraku could have gone further up the route if it had not been for a slip Talking about his muted response to winning gold Roberts said: “We are all very respectful of each other You celebrate your win; you don’t celebrate someone else’s loss but we are all really good friends and it’s so nice to compete against such nice people." arrived at the terminal at the end of March The two carriers have integrated 57 services into their global network operated by a combined fleet of 340 vessels many of which are powered by alternative with the added incentive of giving her home nation a glimpse of the glory she secured at Paris 2024 and added it to the two tops she got in qualification There is no such thing as an Olympic hangover for the Slovenian she looks as immaculate in her climbing as ever Behind Garnbret is the new European champion from Villars Switzerland last week – Italy’s Laura Rogora Rogora reached hold 46+ for her second position Third at Paris 2024 and third through to the final is Austria’s Jessica Pilz Two-time Olympian Oceania Mackenzie has been showing improvement in her Lead results and she has a final to add to the list now in her first appearance in Koper Mackenzie said: “I felt really good on the wall I was a little bit scared about the hand jam and it did freak me out a little bit but after that I really got in the flow and enjoyed it and felt really confident Spending time with my sisters and the Swiss team and just enjoying it.” USA’s Annie Sanders goes through in fifth ahead of sixth placed Mattea Pötzi of Austria who moved up from 19th in qualification Great Britain’s Erin Mcneice in seventh and France’s Zélia Avezou in eighth both reached hold 37+ for their final spots Find the women’s Lead qualification results here: https://ifsc.hopp.to/kp24wlr In the men’s competition it is becoming a bit of a theme that Japan’s Anraku Sorato and Great Britain’s Toby Roberts are fighting it out at the top of the order Roberts got the upper hand at Paris 2024 taking gold to Anraku’s silver and the Japanese climber is out to turn that around by leading the chasing pack Anraku progressed with a hold 41+ performance and Roberts was just behind on hold 40+ Omata Shion joins teammate Anraku in the final going through in third on hold 33+ Germany’s Yannick Flohe moved up from 18th position in qualification to make the final also reaching hold 33+ for fourth There are two French climbers in final with Sam Avezou in fifth on hold 32 and teammate Max Bertone in seventh on hold 28+ Bertone made his first senior final last time out in Briançon and is once again in the top eight and still in with a medal shot The French are split by the third Japanese climber South Korea’s Lee Dohyun makes the final in eighth on hold 27 as an appeal late in the round downgraded Japan’s Murashita Zento 27+ to a 27 and moving him out of the final spots and Lee in After the semi-finals Lee said: “I ground, excelling among the cadets. Demonstrating both skill and determination, the Slovenian team secured the top position on the overall medal standings by claiming three gold, two silver, and one bronze medal (3-2-1). Croatia (3-1-4) and Serbia (2-3-1) closely followed, highlighting a competitive weekend of judo across the region. The host nation’s success was evident from the very first day, with Slovenian athletes delivering memorable performances in the finals. Gal Blazic (SLO) claimed victory in the -60kg category with a well-executed sutemi-waza technique, overpowering Nikola RADANOV (SRB). In the -52kg category, Zarja MASTNAK (SLO) swiftly defeated Giulia BONZANO (ITA) within the first minute, catching her off guard with a decisive kansetsu-waza. The home crowd witnessed yet another thrilling win as Leon MAROSEK (SLO) secured gold in the -90kg category. Marosek’s powerful uchi-mata and ko-uchi-gake combinations proved too much for his opponent, Nemanja SIMIC (SRB), capping off Slovenia’s victories in the finals. Overall, it was an impressive weekend for the Slovenian judo team, with achievements both domestically and internationally. Following this success, the team’s journey continues with a three-day training camp in Koper, preparing for future challenges. The next cadet European Cup will be held in Györ, Hungary, on November 9-10, 2024. who held third-place in the Lead World Cup ranking going into Koper - were the next two out Whilst they were unable to improve upon Sam's score of 31+ thus bumping Max Bertone out of the medal positions into fourth the second to last athlete out was Toby Roberts Both were streets ahead of the competition in semi-finals with Toby seven holds clear of Shion Omata in third these two would both find their way onto the podium They had some awkward moves to negotiate first Opting for the same dynamic beta as Dohyun Lee low down and was quickly up into the awkward mantle Finding a dropknee whilst on the 29th hold Toby reached straight past the 30th to the 31st moving from fourth into second in a single move whilst also ensuring that he didn't have to commit to the same awkward clipping position the Sam Avezou was forced into A few seconds later and Toby had moved into first place and we got our first look at the desperately crimpy headwall each one demanding pure crimp strength from already exhausted fingers comfortably ahead of the rest of the field Sorato was quickly up into the upper reaches of the route moving ever closer to Toby's high point of 40.  one that would move him to within four moves of Toby's highpoint and before he could commit to it his right hand fired off With wins in the Lead in Koper and Wujiang this year as well as wins in Chamonix and Briançon in Lead and Boulder respectively during the 2023 season Toby matched the men's British record for World Cup wins by virtue of the World Cup scoring system where an athletes lowest score is wiped when their overall score for the season is calculated Toby also secured the overall Lead title for 2024 regardless of what happens in the final World Cup of the season in Seoul With Toby in first place with a score of 3380 the only two athletes within 1,000 points of Toby - and therefore theoretically able to overtake him in Seoul - are second place Zento Murashita with a score of 2665 whilst Toby missed the Briançon World Cup - meaning that his 'lowest score' has essentially already been taken away from his overall score of 3380 both Zento and Shion have competed in all World Cups so far meaning that even if they were to win the Seoul World Cup their lowest World Cup scores would still need to be subtracted from their overall score Zento Murashita's highest possible score is 3,340 just a matter of weeks after winning Olympic Gold Toby has become just the third British man to win a season title and Malcolm Smith tied for first in the Boulder in 2002 because there were a few sketchy moves at the start.. but my whole goal with this competition was just to enjoy it I couldn't have [done] any more moves even if I'd wanted to so I'm really happy I got the most out of myself' 'In route observation my main goal was to get to the white section where all the crimps were now it's time to try my hardest and see how high I can get the qualifying round and semi-final were both very much the Janja Garnbret show.  she was the only climber to Top both routes With home pressure evidently not troubling the double Olympic Champion she went into the final the clear favourite who reaffirmed just how good she is on the lead wall on the Olympic stage Mei Kotake - who entered the Koper World Cup in second place - was the big casualty of the semi-finals She stayed on the wall for what seemed like an age having qualified for semis in fourth.  Chaehyun Seo was another semi-final casualty falling part way through a horrendous roof section Her score of 37 was just a '+' away from a place in finals with Zélia Avezou and Erin McNeice both squeezing into finals courtesy of that very same '+' after having just recently taken Bronze in the combined at the European Championships Her casual approach to the massive roll-over dyno low down on the wall was a clear sign that she had carried her European Champs form through to Koper whilst also highlighting a move that might challenge some of the lead-specialists in the final.  As expected from a climber with such strong bouldering pedigree slowing the move right down and looking in control throughout and Erin was no longer able to shake away the pump and therefore seemed unlikely to challenge for the medal positions Annie Sanders of the USA took to the mats fourth having made finals in Boulder in consecutive World Cups in 2023 but failed to make Lead semis prior to Koper very nearly reaching the Top of both routes whilst her fifth place finish in semis was enough to indicate that her qualifying performance was no fluke Annie slowed the dyno down even more than Erin and was able to match hands and recoup some energy Clipping a draw that Zélia elected to skip Annie lingered momentarily in second place typically more at home on the Bouldering mats than on the Lead wall she looked smooth as she moved into fourth she had to reach back for a challenging clip She locked her right shoulder and her left heel and just managed to get the clip as her core began to sag and she was unable to match Annie's highpoint Paris Bronze medallist Jessy Pilz was out third to last With the top three as it stood having reached 37+ Jessy campused her way through the mid-30s to raise the bar just a single move higher again Laura Rogora was a climber seemingly close to her best having recently won both the Lead and the combined Lead & Boulder at the European Championships this route was not one that played to Laura's strengths of pure endurance on small holds instead demanding power endurance and dynamism.  instead breaking it down into two slow and secure movements Janja seemed determined to make the high percentage decision and committing to whichever one seemed less marginal She clipped early to avoid the complications that many others had found around the 37th hold threw up a high heel that no-one else had seen or committed to and maintained her 100% record in Lead World Cups in the 2024 season 'I've gotten used to it [the home pressure] and I have to say that I really really love climbing in front of the home crowd with all the kids screaming and cheering and all the people here so I absolutely enjoyed myself on the wall today' 'Honestly if it wasn't the World Cup on home turf then I wouldn't be competing I needed to perform in front of the home crowd to give the fans something back because they give me so much love and support With Janja confirming at the end of the interview that this is the end of the season for her it is mathematically possible for her 750 point lead to be overtaken by three climbers Mattea Pötzi that Janja Garnbret wins the overall Lead World Cup season having only competed in 50% of the competitions The penultimate round of the IFSC Boulder World Cup took place in Prague Dohyun Lee of Korea and Natalia Grossman of the USA won gold in two suspenseful finals Great Britain's Olympic Champion Toby Roberts won bronze after a.. From @fcbayerncampus: Midfielder Benjamin Dibrani leaves FCBayern and joins Slovenian first division club FC Koper working his way through every stage of the Bavarian’s campus and overcame a cruciate ligament tear before graduating from the U-23s and going on loan to Schwarz Weiß Bregenz in the Austrian 2 Dibrania started slow but was eventually able to win game time at the newly promoted club One would think he would return from loan on a wave of momentum nor did he make a single match day squad for the U-23s alongside a contract that was set to expire in the June of 2025 necessitated a move away from the Bavarians and that has come in the form of joining Slovenian side FC Koper It is really good to see Dibrani get a fresh start as well as another chance at the game time and development he needs and deserves Looking for thoughts and analysis of Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga showdown with Borussia Mönchengladbach?
