Slovenian Scouts in the city of Kranj led the charge in one of the country’s largest local environmental actions: LET’S CLEAN UP KRANJ – No More Crap in Kran’
united over 5,500 volunteers across two days
collecting more than 22.5 tonnes of waste from the environment
Although the cleanup was initially delayed due to bad weather
From schools and kindergartens to civil protection units and Scout groups
people of all ages tackled litter in public spaces and natural areas
Komunala Kranj expertly handled waste management
with waste collection points set up throughout the city
This year’s edition brought a unique opportunity for participants: the chance to visit and clean historic air-raid shelters
Deputy Mayors Janez Černe and Manja Zorko welcomed the volunteers and toured one of the shelters in the Planina neighbourhood
with strong participation from local schools
As part of International Day of Forests celebrations
Scouts partnered with the municipality’s landscaping contractor
offering them as a thank-you gift for participating
Kindergartens also received book sets from publisher Narava to encourage early environmental education
Saturday saw even greater community involvement
Scouts were central in coordinating materials
designed to engage the public through workshops and educational activities on sustainable living
Organised in collaboration with local partners such as KUD SubArt
the initiative helped build momentum and raise awareness ahead of the cleanup
“Today’s cleanup is not just about removing waste—it’s about our collective role in protecting the environment,” said Matjaž Rakovec
Campaign coordinator Tea Derguti emphasised the contribution of emergency services and volunteers in tackling difficult locations like riverbanks and the Kokra Canyon
Even the most inaccessible areas were reached with support from firefighters
With nearly 5 tonnes more waste collected than last year
this year’s campaign showed that the people of Kranj—led by their Scouts—remain deeply committed to protecting their environment
As the city and its Scouts prepare to mark the 25th anniversary of the campaign next year
their efforts continue to set an inspiring example of what youth-led
community-driven action can achieve for sustainability

ExclusiveJanja Garnbret: Tokyo2020 Medal MomentsSlovenia’s Janja Garnbret lived up to her pre-event billing as the best in the world by winning gold in sport climbing women’s combined as the sport made its Olympic debut
The 22-year-old secured victory by a massive margin
finishing over 30 points clear of the Japanese pair of Nonaka Miho and Noguchi Akiyo
The first-ever women’s sport climbing Olympic champion
will be keen to put on a show in front of her home fans
It would take a seismic upset to beat the Slovenian on home soil
but thanks to the presence of Austria’s Jessica Pilz
The 24-year-old finished seventh in the Olympic final
Another Olympic finalist in Korea’s Chaehyun Seo will be quietly confident of making the podium
having won the 2019 lead World Cup overall title in her senior debut season
The 17-year-old is also the reigning Asian champion
keep an eye on Garnbret’s compatriot Mia Krampl
who didn’t quite make it to the Olympic final
but finished second in the lead competition at the 2019 World Championships
Sweden’s Hannes Puman and Stefano Ghisolfi of Italy will be confident
having both finished in the top ten in lead at the 2019 World Championships
There are high hopes too for USA’s Sean Bailey
who finished in the top 10 overall in the 2019 lead World Cup

This past weekend’s competition in Kranj, Slovenia, was the first event on the IFSC circuit following August’s World Championships (and the inaugural Olympic berths that came with them)
Many competitors were fresh off trips to other countries for big competitions like the Bloc Shop Open in Canada and the Adidas Rockstars in Germany
it felt like it had been ages since the world’s top competitors convened for an IFSC lead World Cup event
but the abundance of travel and Olympic buzz in the interim laid a foundation for some intriguing questions: Would those competitors who already qualified for the 2020 Olympics choose to continue on the World Cup circuit at Kranj
would competitors who were so consistently good in the first half of the lead season be able to pick up right where they left off
Canada’s Sean McColl has had a good couple of months
He made the finals at the World Cup competitions in Chamonix and Briançon over the summer
and he also earned an Olympic berth at the recent World Championships
where he advanced all the way to the final round in the men’s division
McColl finished in 4th place at Kranj
narrowly missing a spot on the podium but adding nearly 12 points to his overall lead season score for 2019
Great Britain’s Will Bosi was in a good position after the qualification round at Kranj
Although he eventually had a surprisingly low fall in the men’s semi-finals and finished in 26th place
he is a crowd favorite and will likely come back strong as the season rolls on
Spain’s Alberto Ginés López pinches his way up the slopey volumes along the arête of the famously old-school wall at Kranj
the 16-year-old is already gaining a fan base because his facial expressions show all the challenge and emotion of a given route
That grit earned Ginés López a spot on the podium at Kranj
it might not be well known that Jain Kim comes from an entire family of crushers
as do her older brothers Jaha and Jabee—both of whom are decorated on the Asian circuit
Jabee decided to take part in the event at Kranj
France’s Romain Desgranges is approaching 37 years old
but he is still as active on the World Cup circuit as any competitor
He finished the competition at Kranj in 12th place
Austria’s Jakob Schubert stood on a podium on three occasions at the World Championships; he is having a fantastic 2019 season
But the World Cup competition at Kranj was not his best outing
but fell shockingly low on a sloper section of the finals’ route
and will likely look for a little redemption at the upcoming lead World Cup competitions in Asia
Japan’s Kai Harada works his way onto the upper section of the wall at Kranj
Harada eventually earned a silver medal at the competition
The Czech Republic’s Adam Ondra was back in top form at Kranj
unrattled by some misfortune in the combined discipline at the recent World Championships
He was in the lead in the scores for most of the competition at Kranj
sitting atop a stacked men’s field that also included Harada
Ondra even appeared more relaxed than usual
turning to the crowd on multiple occasions while climbing to request some cheers from the onlookers
He finished the competition as the only competitor to top the route in the finals
the big question at Kranj was: How would Slovenia’s Janja Garnbret rally after a decidedly mixed bag of a lead season
She has looked challenged at times (and made some uncharacteristic slips in other lead World Cup competitions)
but she has also stamped her dominance with some jaw-dropping wins—at the World Championships
but fell going for hold number 28 in the semi-finals
Her final score of 27+ put her in 13th place
and she was left to watch the finals from the stands
South Korea’s climbing legend Jain Kim has been on the sidelines with an injury for much of the 2019 lead season
The event at Kranj marked her return to the World Cup circuit
She advanced to the semi-finals and finished the competition in 9th—barely missing a spot in the finals
It was not quite the dominant performance from Kim that fans have come to expect over the years
but it was nice to see her back on the circuit and there is no reason to think she won’t continue to improve and find her groove
Iran’s Elnaz Rekabi finds a heel hook and a moment of rest on a hexagon of Squadra volumes
Rekabi finished the semi-finals with a score of 20+
ultimately in 20th place for the competition at Kranj on the whole
France brought a stacked field of competitors to Kranj
Gibert would finish the competition in 21st place
American Alex Johnson took part in Kranj
and the event marked the first time she had participated in a lead World Cup competition since 2012
Johnson’s American compatriot Ashima Shiraishi advanced to the semi-finals and finished in 16th
The other American standout in the women’s division was Kyra Condie
South Korea’s Chaehyun Seo took the top honors in the women’s division at Kranj
earning her third gold medal—and adding to her storybook rookie season on the adult circuit
Perhaps most impressive about Seo’s victory in Slovenia was that it came on the home turf of two of the finalists—Lucka Rakovec and Mia Krampl
although some of the competitors who punched their Olympic tickets at the aforementioned World Championships (like Japan’s Akiyo Noguchi and Tomoa Narasaki) decided to forego the World Cup event at Kranj
Chief among them was Slovenia’s Janja Garnbret
whose near-flawless performance at those recent World Championships somewhat masked the fact that she has faced stiff competition this lead season
Garnbret climbed well in the qualification round
she struggled to negotiate around the volumes on the headwall and fell with a score of 27+
Garnbret did not advance to the finals for the second time of the 2019 lead season
Garnbret’s surprisingly low standing—in her home country—briefly deflated the crowd
but it left the door open for a thrilling and unpredictable final round
Leading the way as the round kicked off was Japan’s Ai Mori
Slovenian fans were still treated with a hometown finalist
as 18-year-old Lucka Rakovec advanced right on Mori’s heels
also advanced to the finals in the women’s division
The razor-thin victory in the women’s division by Seo marked her third consecutive lead World Cup competition win
She now sits high at the top of the 2019 overall lead season rankings
Ever since the conclusion of the World Championships
much of the chatter has been about how the Czech Republic’s Adam Ondra surprisingly did not qualify for the Olympics
And while that is certainly an apt talking point
it gives the impression that he is struggling this season
He won the lead discipline at the World Championships
and he won the lead World Cup event in Chamonix back in July
One could even chalk up his failure to qualify for the Olympics as a fluke
an unlucky foot dab on a bolt during the World Championships’ combined discipline
However you choose to assess Ondra’s peculiar season so far
He topped both of the routes in the qualification round and reached the high point in the men’s semi-finals
The performance prompted commentator Charlie Boscoe to declare
“[Ondra] was on a different planet tonight!”
If the competition at Kranj would have concluded at the end of the qualification round
the Americans would have had a great collective showing
Sean Bailey and Jesse Grupper both looked strong
Kyra Condie and Ashima Shiraishi put on electrifying qualification performances
Grupper fell low on the wall and earned a score of 13 (in 24th place)
Bailey climbed high before getting stymied at a cruxy section that also bested Germany’s Yannick Flohé
it was Bailey’s second best placement of the 2019 lead season
Shiraishi also found herself in a crux section during semi-finals that impeded a number of other competitors
But Condie’s higher score of 25+ earned her 14th place—the highest placement of her career in a lead World Cup event
Other members of Team USA included John Brosler finishing in 70th place in the men’s division
The next lead World Cup event will take place in Xiamen
It will also include a speed climbing discipline
Stay tuned to Climbing.com for the livestreams and coverage of the event

Excellent performance by youth from First Lady Melania's country
I hope we in Wilmington [NC] Symphony play Moldau comparably well next month

I hadn't heard in years (I am no longer 'quite young' and in fact am not young at all
I went to YouTube to listen to several versions and then found this
I agree this is a very extraordinary performance
Conducted and adapted beautifully and of course
I will cherish this recording forever!Thank you Slovenia and Gimnazija Kranj!Beautiful
simply and completely and stunningly beautiful!Michael VaughnSeattle
I have just discovered this Gimnazija Kranj orchestra
I have been playing various peices for days
I am transported by the way ach instrument seems so distinct and clear
I have to say it seems a cut above other orchestras
You can find me there under Virginia Franklin
I will be looking for you because I would like to follow you
however I can feel great energy from this orchestra ...Die Moldau is the absolutely the most passionate performance I have ever heard
As I watched this performance the notion that it was performed by a youth orchestra didn't pass
through my mind.A wonderful composition by Smetana; a masterful conducting interpretation
matched by an impressive performance by the orchestra
pourriez vous me dire le nom de la jeune clarinettiste qui joue divinement bien et qui vraisemblablement a un petit problème à son œil gauche
Can't be otherwise but join the applause of those in this presentation like in many other recordings
Most renditions project the feel of youthful smoothness as oppose to cool
and shows the sensitivity to the music and time
We recently discovered this amazing orchestra and can't get enough of it
The conductor is truly gifted in his interpretation of the music
Each individual musician is gifted beyond the usual scope of a youth orchestra
I wish there was more information on the musicians
Magnificent performance of Scheherezade....so transparent and emotive with excellent ensemble
I have just discovered this orchestra and am absolutely blown away by the beauty of their playing and interpretation of pieces
Does anyone know if they have any CD’s available
I’d like to buy Ma Vlast and The New World to have in the car
Great orchestra! I listened to their performance in Japan and was impressed
I was interested in them and looked them up on google
Such a wonderful orchestra deserves to be more recognized and praised all over the world
because we can listen to their performance on youtube anytime we want
I must agree with you wholeheartedly about this orchestra
I've been searching the Internet to find out more but alas not very fruitful
Perhaps you may have found out more than me
Okay there may be the occasional bum note by the singers but their enthusiasm for the music shines through
This morning saw the beginning of the first World Cup since the Olympic Games
With the historical event behind the world’s greatest athletes
focus shifted back toward the World Cup season continuing in Kranj this weekend
The two-route qualification event began with the men
each of whom aimed to make one of the top 26 spots required for semi-finals
Although the men’s competition featured numerous strong contenders
not a single Olympian decided to compete in the day’s event
What makes today’s competition interesting
primarily boils down to those that did decide to compete
Although neither Ondra nor Ginés López climbed in Kranj
the top-end of the field featured numerous World Cup winners that could beat either Olympian in competition
Great Britain showed up in form today taking both Billy Ridal and Jim Pope to Semis
Both boulderers have trained hard this season for lead
Their 14 and 20 placements reflected their effort
Japan’s Masahiro Niguchi could become a challenging opponent in the upcoming rounds
His general consistency between routes makes him a perpetually strong competitor
his seventh placed teammate Zento Murashita also stands to climb well taking a Top and 36+ to earn his position
Tops would be seen all the way down to 14 position
All but two of the top 14 athletes would top at least one of the two qualification routes
This level of ability should make for an exciting semi-final
team Slovenia qualified four climbers for the semi-final round
Even the bottom three of these four climber seem competitive
and Luka Potocar hold positions 10 through 12
The sequentially placed competitors show the significance of a tightly knit team
Although ranked lower than competition’s favourites
it seems that all three athletes climbed consistently enough to score within a position of one another
these athletes could have a dominating run in semis
American Sean Bailey climbed to a Top and 36 holds
Bailey has pulled down medal after medal in these last World Cups and has become a favourite to watch for that very reason
Another climber worth watching is Italy’s Stefano Ghisolfi
Ghisolfi climbed as well as Japan’s Ao Yurikasa
a young athlete who only competed in his first World Cup this past June
He and Ghisolfi followed the Slovenia’s Domen Skofic and Switzerland’s Sascha Lehmann both of whom earned first for topping the qualification routes
Although the men’s field did not feature a single Olympian
Slovenia’s Mia Krampl and her teammate Janja Garnbret all competed and qualified for semis in today’s event
The most obvious surprise from the round came from the fact the Olympic Gold Medalist did not qualified for semis in first position
Although this statement speaks more to her ability than otherwise
it is surprising that four athletes ultimately surpassed the World Champion
Garnbret concluded her competition in fifth position with Krampl
the Slovenian women climbed side-by-side today in terms of ranking
This appears to show the strength of a team-focused approach to training
Although it will surprise few to know that Italy’s Laura Rogora and Korea’s Chaehyun Seo each topped both qualification routes
both of their consistent performances in these last World Cups show that the women’s field has narrowed in its separation
This is further evidenced by Japan’s Mei Kotake who would tie the Olympic leaders with tops of both qualification routes
Although Garnbret’s combined proficiency appears difficult to beat
cracks have formed in her seemingly insurmountable ability
Russia’s Dinara Fakhritdinova also out-climbed the Slovenian with a top and a score of 34+
She ultimately took fourth in qualification despite her limited experience in the World Cup circuit
Fakhritdinova only climbed her first World Cup in this summer
To outqualify Garnbret so rapidly speaks to her ability
To do so with such little experience suggests that Fakhritdinova has potential
Although the Garnbret-beating climbers do make for an interesting story
several other athletes climbed a strong round this afternoon
American Natalia Grossman has become the most consistent contender against Garnbret in both Boulder and Lead
showing the Garnbret is not the only climber to compete well in multiple disciplines
Grossman has shown the most consistency aside from Garnbret this season
Japan’s Momoko Abe and Great Britain’s Molly Thompson-Smith will join Slovenia’s Lucka Rakovec and Vita Lukan
these women further display the depth of the field
Although Japan’s Miho Nonaka decided against competing in today’s event
few top-level lead climbers appear missing from the women’s field
The almost inseparable women’s field will see a challenging semi-final and final early tomorrow morning

cave dragons and sustainable cuisine … Kranj packs a punch for a town aiming to leave little trace
hearing a beatbox cover of the Beatles’ From Me to You live would make my toes curl
But the sincere way singer and dancer Žigan Krajnčan retools the song

it’s the rural surroundings of Kranj that make it worth visiting

Kranj attracts about 60,000 tourists each year
with city officials saying they don’t want the kind of hordes swarming nearby Bled
They also acknowledge that with Kranj having significant industrial output

more sustainable tourism is just one element of the city’s environmental footprint

IFSC commentator Charlie Boscoe puts down his headset and reports on the fourth IFSC Lead World Cup of a very busy 2019 season..
After all the climbing action there's been over the past few months (both IFSC and other comps) it's hard to believe that the last World Cup was over 2 months ago; a now-distant Briançon event where Japan clean swept the men's podium and Chaeyhun Seo (KOR) beat Janja Garnbret (SLO) for the second time in the space of a week
In the intervening time there was the frankly epic (in both quality and duration) World Championships
and the Youth World Championships in Arco which passed in something of a jetlagged/exhausted haze for me but still provided some excellent action and epic swimming breaks between broadcasts
After every Youth World Championships I'm always interested to see which of the climbers we've been watching will make the breakthrough to the senior comps
Everyone will have their own opinions from Arco
but I have to say that Oriane Bertone (FRA) (who won both the Lead and Boulder in Youth B) looked the real deal to me
and I'm really excited about seeing her in the years to come
Go back and watch the replays from her wins if you want to see someone climbing out of sheer love for the sport
this weekend we were back at it with the 2019 edition of the legendary Kranj World Cup
The Sport hall Zlato Polje has been hosting World Cups since 1996 and it's a rightly famous competition which is still organised by the formidable Tomo Česen (now there's a man with an interesting life story) who still looks in better shape than most people half his age and is about as tough and impenetrable as the local limestone crags
I like Tomo and his son Aleš (who rented my spare room in Chamonix for a month a few years back) but I wouldn't take either of them on despite how friendly and helpful they are during the Kranj competition
If it ever kicks off at an IFSC organisers meeting
I'm backing the Česens to walk out of the room
The venue itself is quite strange really; when you walk in the day before qualifying it seems hard to believe that the unremarkable sports hall you're looking at is the legendary Kranj venue which has seen all the greats competing in it down the years
by the time the finals come round the DJ is doing his thing
the hall is packed with spectators and it all makes sense
There are some funny little quirks at the venue
such as the fact that the wall extends right into the roof beams so our cameras can't see the last metre or 2 of the routes (we get around it by installing a camera and operator in the rafters who can film climbers as they finish their routes)
There's also quite a weird setup whereby the officials and press areas are overlooking the hall in a glass fronted room which looks like the bridge of a ship
It makes the venue feel ever so slightly like the playground at school where you'd be up to no good and then suddenly turn round and see a teacher watching you through a window
Last year we had semis and finals on separate days
meaning that I and many of the IFSC athletes
coaches and staff could get some climbing time in ahead of the final
but this year Saturday was qualifying day and then we had semis and finals on Sunday
but I do think that it works better that way than having qualifiers and semis on one day and then finals all on their lonesome
In the men's qualifying quite a few of the big names had a bad day but given the depth of the field
there's always someone missing out on the semis who might have hoped to make the final
Loïc Timmermans (BEL) was unlucky 27th
and he was joined on the semi-final sidelines by Max Rudigier (AUT)
Meichi Narasaki (JPN) and Jongwon Chon (KOR)
all of whom have previously made World Cup finals
Jim Pope and Hamish McArthur all making semis
but sadly none of them then made the final
Kieran Forrest missed out but it was only his second World Cup and his time will come
Things tend to be slightly more predictable for the women
where there is clearly a divide between the top dozen or so climbers and the rest of the field
Hannah Schubert (AUT) and Sandra Lettner (AUT) would all have been hoping for a semi final spot but couldn't secure one
Molly Thompson-Smith (GBR) did get in though
scraping through in joint 26th after a nervous wait to see if anyone could displace her in the last hour of qualifying
Sadly for Molly she fell low down on the semi final route and ended up 27th
The big story in the semis was Janja Garnbret missing out on a place in the final at her home event
She's now missed two Lead finals this year and 13th in Kranj represented her worst ever finish at a World Cup
I've mentioned in a previous report that Janja sometimes has weekends where she is visibly not in the mood for whatever reason
and as soon as she walked into the arena on Saturday morning to watch the men's qualifying
I caught a couple of peoples' eyes and raised my eyebrows
You could tell from her expression and body language that it was going to be "one of those weekends" and so it proved
She told me afterwards that she's been feeling really nervous and frankly it showed in her climbing
and seems to struggle whenever any added complexity or significance is added to a situation
I think that the day before the Olympics begins
the best thing anyone could do for her is take her out for a beer and a sushi
because she's unbeatable when all she's got to do is climb and not think about it too much
If there's more to think about than simply smashing her way up the wall
Come the finals the hall was packed and despite having been up since horrible o-clock for the semis (which started at 8am) everyone (me included) was pumped up for a big show
Sadly we didn't get one in the women's final
where the parameters of the game are essentially changed every round of every competition
I spoke to Christian Bindhammer (the chief route setter in Kranj) afterwards and he was philosophical about it and just said that the setters try to consider every detail
then make thousands of micro calculations and sometimes it just doesn't quite work
The moves around hold 34 were actually quite simple but only if you read them correctly
Despite the show not being what it might have been
Chaehyun Seo did give us a good story line by winning once again to make it 3 victories in her first 4 World Cup appearances
Chaehyun has been an absolute sensation this season and having seemingly come from nowhere
she is now the runaway favourite to take the season title
I wonder what odds you could have got on that at the start of July
Jessy Pilz (AUT) picked up second - a much-needed good result after a poor Lead season so far - and Lucka Rackovec (SLO) gave the home fans something to cheer when she got bronze
Anak Verhoeven (BEL) almost picked up a podium and looked in really good shape
I really hope she can get to the bottom of this arm issue that has been troubling her for so long because when she's at full strength she can really do some damage
The men's final was set up to be a classic
with an incredibly strong line up of veterans
legends and stars of the future like Alberto Ginés López (ESP)
In my opinion it really delivered and will go down as one of the best finals we've had in recent times
The fact that 2 climbers (including double Lead World Champion Jakob Schubert (AUT)) fell at hold 12 just goes to show that the lower sections of routes still demand respect and are often much harder than the climbers make them look
After the event I was chatting to a coach and he said that it must have been a big moment for us on the broadcast when Jakob fell but I had to be honest and say that when someone falls unexpectedly
it's hard to come out with anything coherent because there was no warning of what was about to happen
When someone is smashing their way up a route it's easy to get some good lines in
but when there's a surprisingly low fall it's tough to say much of any use
Sean McColl (CAN) put on a cracking show and was the first climber to get close to the "egg" section (it will make sense if you watch the replay)
Alberto Ginés López then got a little further along it and then Kai Harada (JPN) did likewise
only for Adam Ondra (CZE) to come along and show all of us how it was done
and gave the Hollywood ending to an otherwise entertaining but tense final
To say he dominated the event is barely to do it justice; he looked like he was on a different planet to everyone else there and rarely have we seen anyone on the men's side crush the competition as brutally as Adam did in Kranj
After the event finished I had a beer with one of his "Road to Tokyo" guys and I asked him if Adam might be joining us for a drink
Not a bit of it apparently; he wanted to get some rest so that he could get up early and try to flash some 8c+ he liked the look of on the drive back to Brno
He is really careful with his diet and lives like an athlete
but it's clearly not a chore for him; he absolutely loves climbing and all that comes with being World-class at it
How lucky we are to be watching the sport in the era when he is redefining so many parts of it
I'm still unsure about his ability to deal with moments of huge pressure or how wily he is at always finding a way to win
but it just comes to down to who is best at Lead climbing
Adam and Janja are quite similar in that respect
Loïc Timmermans joined me for the semis and he's unfailingly good company and insightful to boot
he's in the process of becoming a barrister
he's a superb climber and (according to my wife) fairly easy on the eye
Vanda Michalkova (SVK) helped me commentate the women's final and came out with some cracking bits of analysis
which was doubly impressive given that the show was pretty poor
Vanda clearly enjoys doing the stream and despite still being in her teens
funny and interesting in front of a camera and some big lights
Hamish McArthur helped me out during the men's final and I thought he was excellent
He's only 17 but some of his insight was fantastic
and he seemed to have an innate understanding of when to talk
which is a vital part of the co-commentator role
His exit at the end of the show was irresistibly comical (I think he just had a brainfart) but overall he was brilliant
It's always a bit nerve-wracking for me to have someone co-commentate for the first time because you just don't know what a person will be like
but Hamish delivered in spades and I'll be trying to get him on again in the future
Up next for the climbers is a trip to China and specifically the coastal town of Xiamen
The area is known for having wild weather and in 2017 I remember we got battered by lashing rain there
Hopefully we'll be luckier this time and enjoy the blue sky we had on our visit last year
After that we're all heading back to Japan for the final World Cup of the season in Inzai
I haven't been to Inzai before but it looks sleepy and quiet
which I suspect will feel quite nice after a busy year
it's training time for the athletes as they prepare for the culmination of an epic season

From Janja falling off low down which opened up the final to the actual wall feeling like it was old school
Brilliant setting in women’s final and I loved the way they made the climbers down climb to move on
It seemed to really throw a spanner in everyone’s flow
Even the jumpy bits weren’t really jumpy and could be gotten statically
From a youtube spectator point of view this is a bit of a pain
Semis and finals is an awful lot of telly to do in one day
Given the modern addiction to social media it's hard to get to see it all before you've stumbled accross the results
Generally when it's this format I end up skipping watching the finals
which is a shame after all the effort that goes into recording the show
Is there any intel on how the post World Championships Olympic paper work panned out
Did all the countries Olympic committees respond as expect
accepting their Olympic qualification spots
I'm guessing Japan may have been the exception and as predicted will have only accepted one male and one female place at this time..
I meant to say I skip watching the semi and just watch the final..

The Ministry of Defence of Slovenia has initiated the Defence Resilience Hub Network in Europe (RESHUB) project
which aims to establish self-sufficient energy hubs in Slovenian military barracks
According to the Slovenian Energy and Environment Partnership in Defence (SiEnE)
it is a pan-European endeavor providing off-grid capacities for defense installations in the European Union
The project was presented at a hydrogen training event in Zagreb by Mitja Mori, associate professor at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Ljubljana, Hina reported
He praised the Slovenian army for starting to deploy hydrogen technologies in Slovenia
hydrogen would be used in public transport
Mori noted that the Ministry of Defence is making progress with NATO’s pilot project within RESHUB
He explained it would facilitate the development of self-sufficient energy logistic hubs to support the decarbonization of the transport sector
It is also the first defense energy project backed by the European Climate Fund
A large photovoltaic power plant with an electrolyzer for the production of green hydrogen is already being installed in the Peter Petrič barracks in Kranj
The hub would include hydrogen storage for several days of complete autonomy of the barracks in the event of an interruption of electricity supply
The plan is to use hydrogen to achieve energy independence in the barracks and to fuel military vehicles in case of a serious crisis
In peacetime it would be used in the civilian sector
the facility will store hydrogen from electrolyzers produced using electricity from renewable sources
as well as hydrogen produced from natural gas
Hydrogen will be produced with electricity from the grid when there is a surplus in the system
and there will also be a possibility for the barracks to supply electricity to the system
the energy centers in the barracks will be a local energy source as well as a basis for local authorities to develop green public and private transport
The project is supported by the European Defense Agency (EDA) and several EU member states
The training in Zagreb was organized by the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Shipbuilding of the University of Zagreb and Siemens Energy.
I would really love to hear about the news of hydrogen stations in all over the world

What has taken place in Slovenia and Carinthia over the past few days sounds like a heinous crime story - but it is a tragic reality: after an Iranian man living in Klagenfurt stabbed his ex-wife and mother of his children to death in cold blood
he is in custody in Carinthia awaiting handover to the Republic of Slovenia
The horrific scenes took place on Thursday: Slovenian police find a dead woman in the parking lot of Ljubljana Airport - she has several stab wounds
The identity of the woman is quickly established: she is a 33-year-old Iranian woman who lives in Klagenfurt with her three underage children
"The 33-year-old had only just landed at Ljubljana airport," says Slovenian investigator Luka Prisovec
head of the organized crime department of the Kranj police
he explains the facts of the case to Slovenian and Austrian media - the press room in the Kranj police headquarters is filled to capacity
Prisovec: "The woman traveled from Istanbul
which she had parked in the airport parking lot."
who lives in Klagenfurt - was probably already waiting for the woman there: "He inflicted several stab wounds on his ex-wife in an insidious and cruel manner
He then left the scene of the crime in a car with Austrian license plates," said Prisovec
"More than ten stab wounds"A few hours later
who lives in Klagenfurt - is found and arrested: "The arrest happened at his workplace in a supermarket in Klagenfurt," confirms Gottlieb Türk
head of the Carinthian State Criminal Police Office
"The accused was questioned immediately - he immediately confessed to stabbing his ex-wife with a knife in the parking lot of Ljubljana Airport," Türk continues
Prisovec adds: "More than ten stab wounds were found."
partly jealousy"During the search of his home
a kitchen knife - presumably the murder weapon - and the clothes the man had been wearing during the crime were found: "The results of the house search and the forensics of his vehicle were handed over to the Kranj police headquarters on Tuesday
Leiter der Abteilung Organisierte Kriminalität der Polizei Kranj (Slowenien)
there is a strong suspicion of murder under Article 116 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Slovenia," Prisovec clarifies
this carries a prison sentence of at least 15 years
The divorce was preceded by several arguments
even if there was no valid restraining order at the time of the crime: "The man came to Austria with his wife and two children in 2017 - the asylum procedure was negative
but both he and his wife were subsequently granted a valid right of residence," says Türk: "They got married in Iran in 2008 and divorced in Austria in 2023."
The couple's 14-year-old son and five-year-old daughter are still under medical care in Carinthia and will then be handed over to official custody
"The third child has been placed in a care unit in Carinthia due to a physical impairment," says Türk

Slovenia (AP) — Police fired tear gas and water cannons at anti-government protesters in Slovenia’s capital Tuesday
Hundreds of protesters showed up to oppose the Slovenian government’s pandemic restrictions
and the confrontation was the third such incident in Ljubljana within a month
EU leaders have been gathering for a summit with Balkan officials on how to keep engaging with Western Balkans neighbors that hope to join the 27-nation bloc
whose once-successful enlargement policy faces an impasse
The protest was not directly linked with the EU summit
but protest leaders apparently sought the opportunity to get more media attention from foreign reporters covering the event
Slovenian police set up checkpoints and limited traffic and movement in Ljubljana and at the venue a few miles away from the capital where Wednesday's summit will take place
Tensions remained high deep into the evening
with police repeatedly firing tear gas during running battles with soccer hooligans
A leader of the protest has reportedly been detained and police stopped about 30 buses from bringing in the protesters from other Slovenian cities
protest leader Zoran Stevanovic demanded the suspension of all anti-coronavirus measures
an early election and "a new electoral system that would not allow rotation of old political zombies.”

Slovenia has lost and wasted around 24% of last year’s EU funding
The Slovenian municipality of Kranj is a shining beacon – a perfect example of how a city can make the best use of EU funding
While the country as a whole has lost around 24% of the financing provided by the European Union
the local government of Kranj has been putting every single euro to good use
the ongoing EU-funded projects in Kranj are worth around 17.4 million euros
with the municipality calculating that the amount will soon reach 24 million
The local government’s plan is for the value of projects in Kranj to reach 57 million euros over the next four years
On the topic of projects realized thanks to European funding, the mayor of Kranj, Matjaž Rakovec, stated that “The developmental shift of the third largest municipality in Slovenia depends on providing money for projects that will benefit citizens
The absorption of European funds is crucial in this respect
A point of pride for the Slovenian city are its investments in Kranj’s electric mobility projects
up to 15 electric public charging stations will be installed and 10 electric municipal vehicles will begin travelling on the streets
The municipality plans for the creation of over 50 other charging stations and putting 20 new electric vehicles into circulation over the period between 2021 and 2025
The first electric bus will start roaming the streets of Kranj in 2021

Initiatives like the European Capital of Smart Tourism and European Destination of Excellence celebrate forward-thinking practices in cities across the continent. Here are some of the ways this year’s winners, Seville, Paphos and Kranj, are paving the way for more enjoyable and inclusive travel.
Seville is rich in World Heritage Sites, with attractions including the cathedral, the Alcázar and the Indies Archives. All three can now be better explored with the help of the World Heritage app and portal, along with thousands of other sites worldwide, meaning instant information for visitors — and goodbye to paper pamphlets.
Separately, visitors can download the Real Alcazar de Sevilla app that uses augmented and virtual reality to provide an enhanced experience of the Alcázar of Seville, the famous walled royal palaces filled with historical treasures and surrounded by magnificent gardens.
Also available is Kleos Sevilla, an app that plays different sounds when users approach certain flowers and plants — essentially providing a live soundtrack and an enriched experience.
Seville has also employed various initiatives to make the city a cleaner andmore navigable place for visitors and residents. These include extensions to tram, train and bus networks, as well as a pilot project to turn the Cartuja neighbourhood into a low-emission zone, and plans to protect air quality in areas that receive high numbers of visitors.
As a city that’s feeling the effects of climate change, with summer temperatures soaring, Seville is also involved in international collaborations such as Life Watercool, a project that aims to optimise water consumption and help the city to adapt to heat waves.
Paphos Harbour has been developed in recent years and is now a lively hub full of restaurants and bars.Photograph by ZTKK2. Paphos, CyprusOnce the capital of Cyprus, the entire city of Paphos is on the UNESCO World Heritage list, with attractions including the Archaeological Park of Kato Paphos, an ancient Byzantine fort built in the 13th century and a beautiful Old Town made up of twisting cobbled streets.
Paphos also has more than 400 miles of cycle paths in and around the city, with scenic routes supported by signs featuring QR codes known as Smart Signs; these provide in-depth information to help cyclists get around.
Out of the saddle, the city encourages tourism on foot, with an abundance of nature trails winding around the area. Consider the Ezousa Nature Trail, a moderate five-mile walk taking in a viewpoint from the village church, dedicated to Saint Ilarion the Great and perched on a hill above Paphos.
The environment takes priority here, and Paphos’ local beaches are pristine sweeps of golden sand, while many have been awarded Blue Flag status for their impeccable water quality. Furthering environmental efforts, there are also low-carbon, e-mobility systems such as electric minibuses, e-ticketing and e-vehicle charging stations.
Paphos is making strides to becoming more accessible, with the coastal area and Old Town connected by an electric bus service. Smart bus shelters provide audio and video services and ramps make tourist attractions far easier to navigate.
While all-inclusive hotels were once a top choice, visitors are encouraged to consider local alternatives, boosting spending on shopping, dining and art and craft workshops to support local businesses and economy.
The charming old town in Kranj stands on a 100ft-high rock between the Sava and Kokra rivers.Photograph by Jost Gantar3. Kranj, SloveniaKnown as the capital of the Slovenian Alps and a city seeped in history, Kranj is surrounded by snow-capped mountains and bursts with charm, sandwiched between Ljubljana and the stunning Lake Bled.
Getting around in a green way has been a real focus point in this city. The Sustainable Mobility Centre, opened in 2021, offers information on how to navigate Kranj in an environmentally friendly way, from car and bike sharing to public transport.
What’s more, the city also officially opened the Slovenian National Anthem Park, a new green space that connects nature with cultural heritage, and won the silver Sejalec for its underground tunnels initiative.
Located in the city’s 110-foot-long Second World War tunnels, which run underneath the old town, the SOS Info Centre Proteus reveals the curious and little-known lives of endangered olms, Europe’s only cave-dwelling vertebrate.
This last week saw history made to competitive climbing
Although every World Cup brings with it a certain significance
made her the most successful competition climber of all time
After a slower start than many might have expected from the World Champion
Garnbret picked up the pace to secure first in the semi-final
Garnbret went on to attain gold and a climbing World Record
Her gold medal came with the 2021 Lead World Cup title and a score of 300
This placed the Slovenians just four points ahead of America’s Natalia Grossman
Italy’s Laura Rogora took third for the season with a score of 278
the women faced 51 moves that broke into three boulder problems separated by a single rest
Although rests were once common in World Cup competitions
the modern six-minute time constraint all but removed them from these events
the route proved so difficult that the rest
could not provide any athlete the strength to make the Top
athlete after athlete gave themselves to the challenging route with varied results
Grossman came out halfway through the event and took a lead over the previous competitors
Only Korea’s Chaehyun Seo out climbed the American
Seo did not compete enough early in the season to become competitive for the overall title
She sustained this lead through Rogora’s attempt on the Final route
After the Italian had an unfortunate heel pop that concluded her season with a bronze medal
only Garnbret could prove competitive to Grossman’s overall position
Garnbret entered the field needing to win the World Cup in order to win the overall title
the World Champion asserted her proficiency in front of her home crowd
Garnbret climbed almost flawlessly this season adding the 2021 Lead overall title to her already impressive Olympic win
Where it would take previous gold medal record holder Akiyo Noguchi a decade to secure her 30-gold result
Garnbret wound only need five years to surpass it
The Slovenian climber will now look to the final Boulder World Cup on October 1st to further her season
Garnbret will have to work hard if she wishes to best Grossman for the title
The American currently leads Garnbret 345 to 280 in the overall standings
Grossman would have to climb an uncharacteristically poor World Cup for Garnbret to win the overall
the neck-and-neck nature of these two powerhouses speaks to the strength of the young American
Garnbret has climbed hard in competition much longer than Grossman
Grossman’s breakout year in this mid-pandemic season showed that Garnbret is not an anomaly
the Slovenian represents the first in what might become a long line of masterful competitive climbers
Grossman exemplifies the evolution of the women’s category
an evolution further represented by France’s Oriane Bertone who
showed the strength of developing competition climbers
Bertone currently sits in third position for the 2021 Boulder title following her rookie season in the adult field
American Brooke Raboutou also had a strong season in Boulder and currently sits in fourth for the overall title
Grossman and Raboutou’s progress could stand as an example for other countries considering building a National Training Centre
The astounding results of Team USA over this last year leave little room for doubt that team trainings improve athletes
the United States secured third for the Lead National Team Ranking and currently sits in a difficult to dispute second position for the Boulder National Team Ranking
the United States could not crack the top three in either discipline in 2019
As a person might expect from these results
the US men climbed as well as the women this season
Between Nathaniel Coleman’s silver medal at the Olympics and Sean Bailey’s dominating performance on the World Cup Circuit
not to mention Colin Duffy’s impressive performance in his debut adult World Cup season
Although Grossman provided the greatest consistency of all US National athletes
Bailey’s strength in Lead ultimately earned him second place in the 2021 Lead World Cup season
His score of 277 fell short of Italy’s Stefano Ghisolfi and his impressive 319
Here consistency outpaces podiums and though Bailey won more World Cups than the Italian
Ghisolfi climbed high into Finals with greater consistency than all other athletes
both he and Bailey could not maintain their strong seasons through the Kranj semi-final
Both climbers fell low while Japan’s Masahiro Higuchi secured first through semis
Higuchi continued this pace through the Finals and ultimately earned the first gold medal of his career
This medal paired nicely with his third-place finish for the Lead season title
His high ranking here shows how consistent the Japanese climber became over this last season
Although many might have considered Higuchi a dark horse against Bailey or Ghisolfi
those who followed this season’s rankings noticed his name in and around those final positions
his gold became a testament to his persistence over this last year
The next large event will centre around the 2021 IFSC World Championships set to take place between September 15 and 21 in Moscow
Team Canada will see numerous athletes competing in their first international adult category

he acknowledged the members of Ukraine’s Civil Protection Service sent to Slovenia a week ago to alleviate the consequences of the recent floods
As Prime Minister Robert Golob said at the time
Ukraine’s heavy machinery is exactly what is needed in the Upper Savinja Valley right now
Ukraine’s gesture is an example of true reciprocity and intercountry solidarity
It is therefore only right for this year’s event celebrating Ukraine’s national holiday to be held in Kranj
Just like his contemporary and Ukraine’s foremost poet
the greatest Slovenian poet always strived for the equality of all nations
Everyone has the inalienable right to their own identity
That is why Slovenia will continue to stand by Ukraine’s side in its just fight against the aggressor

The declaration highlights the shared vision of Southeast Europe as part of a united, free and prosperous Europe, while the stability, prosperity and good neighbourly relations of the region are underlined as the main political priorities that should be addressed through development, economic growth, adoption and implementation of reforms, as well as through intensive efforts to resolve overwhelming outstanding issues, while respecting existing agreements.
The summit confirmed a decision made by a consensus on consecutive terms of office of the Secretary General of the Regional Cooperation Council (RCC), meaning in for the period from 2019 to 2021, the position will be held by candidate of Albania Majlinda Bregu, and after that, from 2002 to 2024 by Montenegro's candidate Igor Lukšić, PhD.
The Summit reached a decision that, in the next two-year period, the SEECP will be presided for a year by Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Kosovo, respectively.
Prime Minister Duško Marković said at the Summit that, given the contemporary and dynamic challenges facing the region of Southeast Europe, the existing framework represents a platform through which we come together to the best solutions that will contribute to preserving security, stability and progress of the region.
The Prime Minister recalled that Montenegro is strongly committed to preserving good neighbourly relations and improving regional cooperation, pointing out the country's achievements in European integration and significant institutional and legal reforms that lead to concrete results in combating corruption and organised crime.
"I would like to take the opportunity to express satisfaction with the European Commission's report on Montenegro, which was presented on 17 April, showing the overall progress achieved by Montenegro in the process of EU accession, as well as accelerated economic growth in the previous year, as we were one of the fastest growing economies in Europe," Prime Minister Duško Marković said at the Summit.
Prime Minister concluded by voicing expectation that the upcoming EU - Western Balkans Summit in Sofia, as well as the London Summit, will be an opportunity to discuss more important issues for the region, connectivity, economic stability, security and political legacy, in particular focusing on European perspective of the Western Balkans and concrete regional infrastructure projects.
In addition to the Prime Minister of Montenegro and the host - Prime Minister of Slovenia Miroslav Cerar, the summit was also attended by prime ministers of Bulgaria, Croatia and Kosovo, Boyko Borisov, Andrej Plenković and Ramush Haradinaj, Chairman of the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina Denis Zvizdić, as well as senior officials from Albania, Greece, Moldova, Serbia, Romania and Turkey.
