It’s that time of year again when we put away the portable space heater and take out the portable fan
I’ve burned through a number of inexpensive space heaters over the years
and I never look forward to pulling the fan out of the garage and cleaning the dusty grease off those portable blades
These seasonal woes are presumably what Lasko had in mind when it introduced the All-Season High-Velocity Hybrid Fan and Heater
To put it simply, this fan from Lasko is a tower-style portable fan and space heater that eliminates the need for separate devices
It’s suitable for anywhere supplementary heating and cooling would make conditions more comfortable
The All-Season High-Velocity Hybrid Fan and Heater has two main functions: it heats or serves as a fan
so it doesn’t take the place of an air conditioner
But it does a good job of distributing air
which can often be enough to make a room comfortable — more on that below
And with record summer heat waves and soaring home fuel prices, this fan/heater serves consumers looking for a device that helps them cool off in the summer, stay warm in the winter, and save on their energy bill in the process
Key features of the All-Season High-Velocity Hybrid Fan and Heater include:
This appliance comes assembled and ready to plug in
I just had to unpack it and add two AAA batteries to the remote control
The commands on the remote and the built-in touch screen are clear and simple. Because the hybrid fan and heater is a tower model
all mechanical parts are hidden in the streamlined housing
which is white on the front and charcoal gray on the back
it’s more aesthetically pleasing than a traditional tabletop or floor fan
which — fortunately for the purposes of this review — is a finicky month where I live in Italy
The house didn’t get quite cold enough for the central heating to kick on
and it seemed too early in the season to run the air conditioning
This presented a chance to test out the heat and fan functions
even if the rest of the house doesn’t feel cold
It worked so well that I soon moved it out into the hallway and let the warm air blow into the office
Another reason I moved the heater out into the hallway: It’s somewhat noisy when set on its highest speed. This white noise was fine when I was working alone. But when I was on video calls
It was simpler to just move it into the hallway
I prefer to keep the windows open as long as I can before resorting to air conditioning
keeping the air circulating through the house
we positioned the fan in the hallway between our two bedrooms
It kept air moving through each room — cool but not cold
and with consistent intensity — so that we all slept more comfortably
The All-Season High-Velocity Hybrid Fan and Heater is a smart
hard-working appliance that satisfies the need for single-room or supplemental heating and can give a boost to ambient or air-conditioned air
The Lasko does exactly what it claims to do
so in that respect there were no surprises
and the white housing helps it blend into a room
I’d love a fan/heater that was completely silent. But as far as I know, that hasn’t been invented, and the noise level of the Lasko is entirely tolerable
Priced at $150 (see below for shopping info), it’s more expensive than a floor fan or most portable space heaters sold separately
But for the two-in-one functionality and overall high quality
I was offered a sample of the Lasko to try out
but I would recommend it to anyone looking for a strong

We’ve added some new models to the Competition, and updated our Care, Maintenance, and Safety with some new advice for using indoors propane heaters
The Vornado VH200 offers the best combination of power
It heats a room faster and more evenly than other models we tested
The Vornado AVH10 was the most powerful space heater we tested
and it has a few thoughtful details that set it apart from others
This effective portable heater works quickly and lasts for years
But its narrow stream of hot air doesn’t feel as comfortable as the heat from models that warm a whole room
The De’Longhi TRD40615T is the best of its type because it’s sturdier than competitors
with an exterior that stays cooler to the touch
This attractive space heater is able to oscillate
which helps to spread the heat quickly and evenly around the room
flat heater takes up surprisingly little space in the room—especially if you choose to mount it on the wall
If you need an electric heater for the bathroom
the Dreo DR-HSH004A will do the job safely
That’s because in speed and overall effectiveness
it has consistently surpassed nearly every other space heater we’ve tested
delivering an immediate temperature increase that builds steadily and evenly across the room over time
with just three buttons (including the power switch)
It’s also quieter than most other ceramic heaters we’ve tried
and it’s compact enough to tuck away in a corner
it has all of the safety features we look for
a convenient cord-wrapping post (for easy storage)
and a countdown clock when you turn it off (for added safety)
This model made the room hotter and warmed it faster than our top pick
but it also didn’t distribute that warm air quite as evenly
And it usually costs around $30 to $50 more
But the AVH10 is a great alternative if you find it for a good price
or if you really want those extra features
and it remains one of the cheapest and most reliable space heaters you can find
It warms up faster than most fan heaters we tested
lightweight body (about the size of a loaf of bread) and can fit right under your desk
This heater’s focused stream of hot air is great for warming the area directly in front of it
but it’s not as good at spreading the heat around
So the Lasko 754200 is a better choice for a small bedroom or an office than for a large room
which has a digital interface in place of the analog controls
It can’t warm you up quite as quickly as some of our other picks
but its steady arc of motion creates comfortable and uniform heating throughout your space
with a sleek design and simple controls that let you choose between basic heat settings and a specific
it has all of the usual safety features that we look for
taller heating area—enough to warm several people sitting in a medium- to large-size room—but the heater itself is hardly more than 2 inches wide
You can roll it from room to room on the included coaster feet
or save even more space by using the handle on the back to mount this heater up on a wall
Just be warned: The front panel gets really hot to touch—all the more reason to get it up off the floor
Although you should still try to keep your space heater far away from water
this model comes with an ALCI safety plug as well as overheat protection
for added safety in the case of stray splashes
it did a great job of warming up the cold bathroom tile
and it even comes with a remote control so you can heat things up before you get out of bed
you probably shouldn’t rely on a space heater as the primary heating source for your entire home
you’ll want to winterize your windows and look into getting a heat pump
or you still have a room that just won’t warm up sufficiently
If you do think you need a new space heater
we recommend getting one before the cold weather hits
and that means prices and availability can fluctuate wildly in the winter months
Space heaters can be dangerous—we combed the manuals and spoke to experts to get advice on using them safely
A good space heater should make you feel more comfortable
but a space heater needs to do more than just keep you warm
It should also be convenient and easy to use
Below we list some of the things we look for when selecting models:
You’ll notice that we didn’t mention anything about efficiency or power. That’s because, technically speaking, most electric space heaters put out the same amount of heat: 1,500 watts (about 5,110 BTU) on high and 750 watts (about 2,560 BTU) on low. They’re all technically 100% efficient
which means that every watt they use gets converted directly into heat
The difference between a good space heater and a lousy one is how well it moves that warmth around the room—plus the aforementioned safety and user-experience factors
we let each space heater run in a room for four hours
we also took subjective notes about our experiences with the controls
as well as the overall comfort and feeling of the room
this heater is just generally pleasant to live with
thanks to its simple controls and quiet performance
There’s a reason it’s been our top pick since 2018
The VH200 can warm a room faster than most other heaters. Vornado fans have a reputation for powerful air circulation
and the company’s space heaters are no exception
the VH200 raised the temperature by nearly 20 degrees in just two hours
The only other models that came close to that were also from Vornado
but it didn’t produce nearly as much heat overall
The VH200 also comes with all of the safety features we look for, and more. The VH200 is UL-certified, with a tip-over switch that shuts off whenever the heater tilts off the ground, as well as built-in overheat protection. The overheat switch also activates when the airflow gets blocked, as an added layer of protection. The 6-foot-long cable gives you plenty of room to plug the heater into a wall outlet—not a power strip!—and still bring it near you
(You should never plug a space heater into a power strip!) During our tests
the exterior plastic shell stayed relatively cool
Even the heat source behind the grille stayed under 140 degrees
making this one of the coolest models we tested
You still probably wouldn’t want to touch the grille at that temperature
the fins are placed close enough together that even a toddler’s curious fingers will have a hard time reaching inside
space-heater safety largely depends on using the heater correctly
But all of these features are still reassuring
The controls are simple and straightforward
three “mode” settings (one more than the typical low and high settings)
And there’s also a built-in thermostatic climate-control feature
which is a bit less obvious but still nice to have
simply turn the thermostat knob past your ideal temperature level
and the VH200 will self-regulate to maintain the temperature where you want it
we were surprised to find that this feature actually worked as advertised
the VH200 is about the size of a coffee maker
and it can easily fit under your chair or desk
It’s not a particularly attractive piece of home decor
and that’s pretty much exactly what you want
so it’s harder to tip over (and thus safer to use overall)
Vornado offers the best warranty we’ve seen
The vast majority of space heaters are guaranteed for only a year
has a five-year warranty—a generous coverage length that makes the VH200 feel like an even more reliable investment
And the company has a reliable reputation for delivering on these warranties
The VH200 doesn’t come with a remote control or a timer feature. Either one would be a nice added convenience, and a timer would be particularly nice, since it could turn the heater off after you’ve fallen asleep, for example. You can, however, plug the VH200 into one of our smart-plug picks
which could replicate some of these same controls
and you can’t tilt the fan to aim the heat in a specific direction
the VH200 outperformed every oscillating space heater we tested
and it still did a better job of distributing the warmth than any model with a directional heat source
But we also recognize that some people are skeptical of the VH200’s air-circulation claims
And some folks just really enjoy having something that blasts the heat directly at them
It doesn’t have a digital (or even numeric) thermostat
The VH200 could be frustrating for anyone who’s hoping to keep the room at a specific temperature
You can still set the thermostat knob to “4” if that’s where you feel most comfortable
but there’s no way to translate that directly to 72 degrees Fahrenheit (or whatever the actual temperature is)
The VH200 also lacks a fan-only mode. This is really a bummer only because room fans are Vornado’s primary area of expertise
and so the lack of a fan-only mode prevents this model from becoming a year-round companion for home climate control
from its powerful performance to its generous five-year warranty
And it has the added benefit of a digital display screen
along with a few other thoughtful bonus features
including a convenient cord-wrapping post (for tidier storage)
The AVH10’s digital display lets you dial in a more-precise temperature
While the temperature settings on the VH200 are more of a vibe
the AVH10 clearly displays the exact temperature in the room
And the large buttons are convenient and easy to use
that onboard thermostat proved to be pretty accurate
though it did occasionally get confused between the temperature of the room and the temperature of the hot air it was pumping out
This could make the AVH10 a more worthwhile investment for people who want year-round climate control
or it could simply help you move the rest of the heat more efficiently around your home
the AVH10 doesn’t distribute the heat quite as evenly
the AVH10 increased the room temperature by a whopping 24 degrees over the course of an hour … at least when we measured it from 3 feet away
When we measured the temperature from 6 feet away on a diagonal
resulting in a temperature range of 16 degrees across just a few feet of the room
It also tends to cost more than our top pick
The digital display and the cord-wrapping feature on the AVH10 model currently add a premium of about $30 over the cost of the VH200
if you’re willing to pay that much for similar (albeit less even) heating performance
with the addition of timer capabilities and remote control
really good at blasting heat directly at you
You can feel the concentrated jet of warmth almost as soon as you turn on this space heater
it performed nearly as well as our top pick
although it didn’t fill the room with the same kind of soothing
The overall experience of the Lasko 754200 is not unlike having someone point a hair dryer at you
The Lasko 754200 has two large dials on the top—one to control the power output
the other to control the heat setting (high
This heater is about the size of a loaf of bread
The Lasko 754200 tends to cost around $30 to $40—about half as much as our top pick
But it doesn’t have a tip-over protection switch. This is a pretty standard safety feature for portable space heaters. Tipped-over heaters tend to overheat, and this Lasko model’s upright stance is not the most stable. But it does have overheat protection, and it’s still ETL-certified
The Lasko 754200 is also one of the loudest electric heaters we tested. It’s about 7 dBA louder than our top pick, but it’s still below the 60 decibels that the CDC uses to define “normal conversation” level
though it is gravelly enough that you might find it irritating after a while
but is otherwise identical and performs just as well
The TRD40615T builds up heat and keeps working even after you turn it off
which cool off immediately after powering down
are designed to retain enough thermal mass that they keep emitting heat even when the power is off
the De’Longhi TRD40615T was able to keep a room between 80 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit for four hours without using any electricity
it still took a while to build up that much heat in the first place (we’ll get to that)
Like all oil-filled radiators, it’s completely silent, too. Though all of our other picks rely on a fan to move the warmth around, the TRD40615T’s ambient approach to heating means there’s no extraneous noise. If you ever find yourself needing a space heater in a music recording studio—like I do—this is the one to go with
you shouldn’t plug it into the same outlet as your Marshall half-stack
unless you really want to see that outlet explode
The De’Longhi TRD40615T generates its mighty thermal mass by heating up the oil inside of it
this also takes some time—sometimes a half-hour or more before you feel any warmth radiating from the machine at all
it still might raise the room temperature by only a few degrees
If you’re looking for instantaneous heating
The TRD40615T is about the same size as a suitcase or
the TRD40615T may take up room you can’t spare (though the retractable wheels do make it surprisingly easy to move around)
This heater is more well balanced than other oil-filled radiators we’ve tested
but that tall metal mass can still be top-heavy
so you’ll want to make sure it doesn’t topple over on anything important
After we ran this model for four hours during our tests
we measured the exterior case at a whopping 180 degrees Fahrenheit
That’s hot enough to burn your skin on contact—yet it’s still significantly cooler than the 230 degrees we measured emanating from the hard-to-reach interior fins
This one is a lot cooler than any other oil-filled radiator we’ve ever tested (though that might be a … cold comfort?)
Some users have complained about the smell
Brand-new oil-filled radiators sometimes emit a noxious stench from the oil filling that remains on the surface of the heater after manufacturing
If you have particularly sensitive olfactory glands
we recommend running this heater outside to let it off-gas before bringing it inside (keep it dry and away from dirt or grass if you do this)
The TRD40615T comes with just a one-year warranty
This sleek spinning tower has a slightly sci-fi vibe
but it performed nearly as well as our top pick—both in how well it warmed the room and in how evenly it distributed that warmth
We’re not typically keen on oscillating heaters or tower heaters
the Solaris Slim H3 is the best of both worlds
The Solaris Slim H3 is the rare oscillating heater that actually distributes the heat uniformly around the whole room
we measured an average of less than 1 degree of difference in room temperature from the monitors we placed at 3 feet in front of the heater and 6 feet diagonal from it
the 70-degree oscillation arc on this heater was comparable to the air circulation of a Vornado
But oscillating heaters are still more prone to breaking
this isn’t a known problem we’ve encountered with this specific model—at least not yet (though we will continue testing it
we tend to prefer heaters with fewer moving parts
since that means there are fewer things to worry about breaking over time
The Solaris Slim H3 also uses slightly more energy on “low” than other heaters
Dreo designed this model to run at 900 watts on low
rather than at 750 watts (common with other heaters)
This could make you feel a little more toasty
It’s technically a tower heater, too, which means it could be harder to clean. We stopped recommending tower fans for cooling back in 2018 because we found them so frustratingly difficult to clean
While we’ve had more positive experiences with tower heaters
the crevices on the Solaris Slim H3 are pretty easy to access and clean
this heater has a built-in automatic-shutoff system
so the hot air and dust won’t combust into bigger problems
but you can push it back or hang it up to make more room
without having to sacrifice any heating comfort
The controls are even more basic than those on our other picks
too—but if you just need heat whenever you want
this model is more than enough to do the job
The HMP1500 is wider and thinner than our other picks
This De’longhi is nearly twice as tall and twice as wide as either of our Vornado picks
providing nearly 400 square inches of heating space
but not to worry—it’s only about 2¼ inches wide
Even if you attach the rolling wheel attachments (more on that below)
it extends the width to only about 10 inches for a narrow strip at either end
that’s not much larger than our Vornado picks
But the large panel size means the HMP1500 can heat a lot more people
That size means it heats the room more consistently, too. Micathermic heaters like the HMP1500 produce both convection heat (like most of our other picks) as well as more directional radiant heat
and the effect of this one-two heating punch was evident in our tests
There was never more than a one-degree difference across our temperature monitors
whether they were placed directly in front of the HMP1500 or off to the side
a huge flat panel blasting out infrared heat provides much more reliable warmth than a heater that needs a fan or an oscillating motor
The HMP1500 can also be mounted on the wall
If you don’t want to deal with those 10-by-1-inch wheel feet on the bottom of the heater
the HMP1500 also comes with a handle and a few drywall screws
You can easily switch between both options
too—just lift it off the wall handle and roll it into the other room for warmth
The small white wall mount is fairly nondescript
and it can easily blend into the room if you choose to put your heater away for the warmer months
We tried to measure the volume of this heater in our tests
but our decibel reader couldn’t pick up anything above the basic room tone
Sensitive ears may notice a low electrical hum
the lack of fan can prevent the convection heat from properly circulating
The radiant heating component should help to compensate for this
but some people may want to invest in a separate fan
But the surface temperature can get really hot
The middle of the heating panel was radiating around 300 degrees Fahrenheit after we let it run for a full hour on high
which was about standard compared with the other heater cases we measured
If you’re worried about the heat—particularly if you have pets or small children running around—you might want to consider mounting this one on the wall
The Dreo DR-HSH004A is one of the only space heaters we’ve found that comes equipped with an ALCI plug. This type of plug works in conjunction with a GFCI outlet (which you hopefully already have in your bathroom
if it’s up to code) to prevent the electrical current from going somewhere it shouldn’t—like
This safety feature is what specifically sets these heaters apart for low-risk bathroom usage
It comes with all of the other standard safety features that we look for
The DR-HSH004A has built-in overheat protection
so you don’t have to worry about it falling face-first into a puddle near the shower
the ALCI plug should catch the problem before it turns into something worse
But you can bathe more easily knowing that there are multiple layers of protection in place
You can even control the powerful heating on the DR-HSH004A remotely. In our tests, this heater warmed the room just as well as our other Dreo pick
making it one of the better models we tested
And it comes with several different heating modes
including an Eco setting; all of them can be selected using the included remote control
so you can make sure the bathroom’s actually warm before you step inside
a shower or a swimming pool.” In other words
just because the DR-HSH004A may be safer in the event of an accident
that doesn’t mean you should willingly expose it to water
if you can avoid it—water and electricity tend to make for a terrible combination
If you want a space heater that also functions as a nice piece of home decor
the Vornado Vheat offers all of the standard perks of our other Vornado picks (including the warranty)
with the added bonus of a sturdy metal build and delightfully retro design
It’s a nice choice if you’re willing to trade a little sizzle for style
with a single button on top that’s huge and hard to miss
in addition to the ALCI plug—which is good
though the “surround heating” wasn’t quite as even and consistent as we’d hoped
The plastic design also felt a little clunky and cheap
it can be a great solution for the right kind of home
The mirrorlike Boldr Kelvin is sleek and expensive
but it’s also surprisingly good at solving some specific home-heating problems
and it’s still the best (and largest) tower heater we’ve tested
but we’re bullish on tower fans in general
But we have heard some complaints about the oscillating gears causing all sorts of problems (a common issue with any oscillating heater or fan)
and we still think it works pretty well for a loud
It also dehumidified our test space more than any other heater we tested (though that may be a perk for some people)
depending on how you want the heat to spread
The Heatbit Trio space heater uses the excess heat from mining Bitcoin to keep you warm
too—unless the overheat switch gets activated
and it felt like a constant safety concern (also like Prince Robot IV)
It’s also two feet tall and wide and only two inches thick
and the surface gets incredibly hot to touch
making it a particularly poor choice for homes with small children or pets
That’s about the only circumstance where it would make sense for anyone to buy this heater
but that’s because it raised the room temperature by only 4 degrees after two hours
Disappointing performance and safety concerns made this model a quick dismissal
They were all perfectly mediocre in their own slightly distinct ways
and that they caused more than a billion dollars in property damage
Generally speaking, you should always follow the safety instructions in the manual that came with your space heater. To help you mitigate the risks, we’ve also written a separate guide with some additional advice
Even if you have plenty of open space, propane heaters still carry plenty of risk. “The clearance to combustibles is a hazard as well,” Zevotek added, with most manuals advising two or more feet of space in every direction, plus at least six feet separating the fuel canister from the heater itself.
These kinds of heaters may seem like an appealing option, especially as a backup heating source during a power outage or other emergency. But if you’re not careful and attentive, they can also cause an even bigger problem.

that the market is full of various kinds of floor fans — from oscillating towers to raised “pedestal” structures and low-to-the-ground designs
The biggest players in this space are Lasko and Vornado
and we’ve got picks from both brands and a few others below
To help you choose the best for your home and budget
we tested models ourselves and spoke with nine experts (including managers at hardware stores) to discover their favorites and learn what they look for when considering whether to stock a particular model

When it comes to choosing your fan’s height, you’ll need to consider the size of the room you want to cool. “Taller fans, like pedestal fans, can stand up to five feet tall and are perfect for covering larger areas with their adjustable height and wide oscillation. Whereas, portable fans, such as desk fans, are designed to cool smaller spaces like an office cubicle,” says Austyn Hoelter, a merchant at the Home Depot
the former director of AC and fans at Home Depot: “One: The taller it is
most of the heat in your body escapes through your head
so the more quickly you’re able to cool your face and upper body
Though oscillation isn’t a requirement for a good cooling fan, it contributes to a better cooling experience, according to Patrick McDonnell, operations manager at Mazzone Hardware
“You want to almost create a constant wind tunnel,” he says
Oscillating fans create that effect because they “have the air rotating around the room completely
Anyone who’s been kept up at night by the whirring of a fan will know the value of finding one that’s relatively quiet
I’ve included the decibel number — which indicates how quiet or loud it will be — when provided by the manufacturer
but your fan will be noticeably quieter if its decibel number is lower than that
Fancier fans might have features like Alexa compatibility for hands-free adjustments
but typical special features for a fan include having a remote and a timer capability
If you’re trying to keep your electric bill low
a timer can ensure your fan’s not left on too long
These timers can keep a fan going for up to seven hours
or just long enough to keep you cool overnight before heading off to work
I’ve noted these special features when applicable
Height: 40 inches | Oscillation: Yes | Noise: 60 decibels | Special features: Remote and timer
praising both its performance and affordability
this newer version includes a remote and is sleeker
and more customizable with an up to 24-hour timer (instead of seven) and 12 fan speeds (instead of three)
It’s one of the newest additions to Lasko’s lineup of tower fans
and after a speedy setup (just five minutes)
On warmer days the fan quickly gets a nice breeze going throughout the space
I set the fan to a low speed to circulate air and disperse lingering cooking smells
At the top speed — 12 — the fan is so powerful that I found myself huddling under a blanket when it was pointed my way
Though when I turn the fan to lower speeds — six and below — it’s just strong enough to circulate air without being distracting or loud
Height: 36 inches | Oscillation: Yes | Noise: 60 decibels | Special features: Remote and timer
But if you have a smaller space (or a smaller budget)
this one includes a remote control and takes less than five minutes to assemble
this fan has four speeds instead of 12 and a maximum 12-hour timer instead of 24
you’ll be sacrificing some of that customizability
but you’ll still have a powerful fan that can spread breezes across 40-foot spaces
Plus it’s noticeably quiet for a fan at this price point: “While most of the cheaper machines are louder,” McDonnell says
“Lasko really prides itself on still making quiet fans all across its range.”
When I put the fan to the test in my own home
I found it looked sleek and compact in the corner of my living room
the fan was strong enough to make me want to sit under a blanket when it was pointing my way
the fan was quiet and subtle enough that I forgot about it after a few minutes
the fan is also lightweight enough that I could easily move it from room to room depending on my cooling needs
Height: 39.6 inches | Oscillation: Yes | Noise: 40 decibels | Special features: Remote
The brand’s cooling devices are pricier than the other options on this list
but Strategist senior editor Ailbhe Malone says it’s worth the money
“Compared to the two other tower fans I own — generic brands — it’s really cooling,” Malone says
rather than the little slats from a regular fan.” The fan is an especially good option for people with young children or pets because it doesn’t have exposed blades
Malone’s been using her Dyson fan to cool her daughter’s nursery — the hottest room in the house — for two years
and she is snoring under a breeze,” Malone says
the fan has two downsides: a finicky remote and a top-heavy structure
“You’re more likely to knock it over than a regular tower fan,” she says
Height: 20 inches | Oscillation: No | Noise: NA | Special features: None
“I can’t think of another $20 object that is that useful and that capable of holding a space,” she adds
McDonnell seconds her praise and says that the only difference between the one that his customers love and Friedberger’s is this one’s fun color
which makes it “a little bit more cool” (pun intended) than the black fan in his store
Height: 14 inches | Oscillation: No | Noise: 55 decibels | Special features: None
which has been serving the Gramercy Park neighborhood since 1925 and where this fan is a best seller
but the very large face spreads the air around as it moves it forward,” she says
adding that it’s the first fan she recommends to customers looking for the most value over time
but those consume more energy and break more often
but we’ve had people finally bring theirs in for repair after 15 years with no issues.”
Strategist senior editor Jen Trolio includes an older model of 633 in her personal lineup of cooling fans — of which she has many
In the five years that she has owned this fan
with the exception of being “more disruptive on the higher settings
as you’d expect.” Trolio adds that it “kind of depends on where you put them: In a corner they aren’t too bad
like ‘loud white noise’ over ‘full wind tunnel.’” However
this shouldn’t be a problem: Put it in the corner of the room facing the wall to create the wind-tunnel effect he looks for
One more thing to note: Since the fan doesn’t have a remote
Trolio sometimes struggles to adjust the fan’s settings
“They look a bit nice more hidden,” she says
Height: 11.3 inches | Oscillation: No | Noise: NA | Special features: None
If you’re budget-conscious, this small-but-mighty fan is the best option for you
Strategist writer Tembe Denton-Hurst initially bought hers in 2016 to fill in the gaps in her air conditioner’s BTUs
She was immediately smitten: “I took it home
and was so impressed with it that I kept it running nonstop for the next six months
even after I bought the AC.” Given the price tag
this fan doesn’t have any bells and whistles
“There’s a knob at the back that toggles between three modes: high
“The coolest thing about it is that it has a 90-degree pivoting head
so you can point it toward you and then tilt it to any angle you like.” Despite its simplicity and size
albeit fit for one person: “Its size actually works in its favor
The stream of air is concentrated — dare I say person-size — and offers spot cooling rather than transforming the temperature of the entire room,” Denton-Hurst says
Just one thing: Neat freaks should consider that the fan is difficult to clean
Denton-Hurst cleans her with a wet paper towel wrapped around a butter knife
you can try your hand at disassembling it yourself
Height: 43 inches | Oscillation: Yes | Noise: 51 decibels | Special features: Remote
This fan is not only remarkably powerful — it has eight different speeds — but it’s also remarkably quiet
which is reflected in the higher price point
it’s worth the price for its special features
is double oscillation: In addition to oscillating up to 120 degrees both left and right
the fan can oscillate up to 105 degrees up and down
this one was easy to set up — a feature that I value as a writer
I tested it out during this summer’s particularly steamy New York City July and found that it was powerful enough to fill in the gaps in my air conditioner’s BTUs
and create that wind tunnel McDonnell advised simulating
you’ll want to consider where you place it depending on your oscillation of choice
position your 90-degree fan in a corner,” Hoelter says
“A fan that rotates 180 degrees works best along the center of a wall.”
Height: 16 inches | Oscillation: Yes | Noise: NA | Special features: None
If you’re willing to forgo the Dreo’s special features
you’ll be happy with Lasko’s 47-inch pedestal fan
which has three speeds and can be raised up and down depending on your cooling preferences
“It’s good for people looking for something cheap
quiet and it has very good power,” McDonnell advises
this one also oscillates both left and right and up and down — just with less range at 90 degrees
you’ll want to place this fan in a corner for optimal performance
Height: 37 inches | Oscillation: Yes | Noise: 47 decibels | Special features: Remote
What sets this model apart from the Lasko tower fans above is that all of its settings — including oscillation, four speeds, a timer that can be set from three to 12 hours — and even powering on and off, can be controlled through an Alexa device
It’s McDonnell’s top choice for a floor fan
in addition to the convenience its smart capabilities provides
McDonnell says he’s had only one unit come back in the decade-plus he’s been in business
Height: 41 inches | Oscillation: Yes | Noise: 61.4 decibels | Special features: Remote and timer
If you prefer to have fewer appliances taking up valuable real estate in your home
It’s one of Lowe’s store manager Gary McCoy’s favorite devices of its kind
it also has 360-degree oscillating technology to help cool down the entire room,” he says
this one is worth the premium price in my opinion
In the seven months that I’ve been testing the fan
I’ve found it’s quiet enough to keep at full speed while I’m sleeping but powerful enough to keep me cool and decrease any lingering smell from neighboring units in my building
I find it rids my room of any musty smells that arise from the added humidity
Height: 14.4 inches | Oscillation: No | Noise: NA | Special features: None
If a power outage has ever knocked out your air-conditioning
you’re not alone — and you’ll be glad to have this battery-operated fan on hand should it happen again
and was a lifesaver for Trolio during a recent power outage
“I never thought about the convenience of a rechargeable fan until I tried it,” she says
“It’s so easy to just pick it up and move from room to room
or to place it on the floor or a side table and not have to worry at all about being near an outlet or having a cord run across the floor.” You can see how much battery it has left on its battery indicator on the back
“it easily goes eight to ten hours at a reasonably mid to high speed because we were able to use it overnight during our recent power outage.”
Height: 17.4 inches | Oscillation: No | Noise: 53 decibels | Special features: None
On nights when my dorm hadn’t turned off the central heating despite warm temperatures
you’ll do even better with this larger version
that with three speeds and the ability to pivot up and down

If you're after one of the best space heaters to heat up a small space
the Lasko Ellipse CT18950 tower heater definitely ticks those boxes
Small tower heaters like the Lasko Ellipse are convenient in small rooms
which means they spread heat around the room
and they usually pump out enough heat to get 100 square feet toasty warm in short order
After putting the Lasko Ellipse to the test
I was impressed at how quickly it had heated up a larger
500-square foot space and maintained the temperature over time
And its oscillation feature charts a wider path than most other units I’ve tested
Read on to find out if the Lasko tower heater is the perfect fit for your home office or small space
there does not appear to be any way to add items to that cart and complete a purchase
Lasko includes a 3-year warranty on this heater

(Image credit: Future)(Image credit: Future)(Image credit: Future)The Lasko Ellipse is a tower heater
It’s fixed to a stable base and features a built-in handle at the top so you can move this 4-pound unit around easily
The touch-sensitive controls are situated on the top of the unit
while the LED display shows the current setting and other information on the top front of the heater
Lasko includes a remote control so you can change settings from afar
the Lasko Ellipse oscillates side to side to help spread heat throughout the room
But the Lasko beats out many of its competitors with 120 degrees of rotation
as compared to around 70 degrees on other models I’ve tested
which makes it easy to position the heater in more places throughout a room
That power cord also features an overheat protection to reduce fire risk
The unit itself also features overheat protection on top of tip-over protection
The Ellipse’s body features a cool-touch housing
which can help prevent burns and other heat risks
you’ll appreciate the Ellipse’s child lock feature that prevents the kiddos from changing any settings
The heater can operate at any of its three settings: low runs at 750 watts
The auto-shut-off feature kicks in after 12 hours
You can set the timer to shut the unit off anywhere within those 12 hours
And the Ellipse also has an AutoEco thermostat
which turns the heater down or off when a target temperature is reached
and only re-initiates the heat when it’s needed to reach the target temperature again
This helps the heater use less energy overall
The slimline design looks modern and not cumbersome. And it's much lighter to carry than the Honeywell 360 Degree Surround Heater
which is another great option for small spaces
(Image credit: Future)(Image credit: Future)(Image credit: Future)(Image credit: Future)Home office:I first ran the Lasko Ellipse in my home office
Within just a few minutes (certainly less than 10)
raising the temperature a total of four degrees
It was easily up to the task in this small room
so it was easy to find a good spot to test this heater in every room I put it in
The built-in handle is sufficient to carry the 4-pound Ellipse from room to room with no problems
I moved the Lasko Ellipse to our master bedroom
which is generally colder than the rest of the house because it’s further away from heat sources
We happen to be in a cold snap here in Colorado
so I turned off the main heat to the house to get the room plenty chilly
and the temperature was 60.6 degrees before I started the heater
I turned the Lasko Ellipse to the highest heat and fan settings
the temperature in the room had risen to 65 degrees
It hit 67 degrees almost exactly one hour after I turned the heater on
Those are impressive numbers for a heater of this size
and it bests similar heaters I’ve tested in terms of time it took to raise the temperature five degrees
I moved the Lasko Ellipse to my living room
which connects in a semi-open floor plan to the kitchen
I started the heater as the thermometer in the room read 60.6 degrees
The thermometer read 66 degrees just 25 minutes later
So I turned everything off and reset the experiment
raising the temperature from 63 degrees to 66 in about 40 minutes
but then it hovered at that temperature for the next 30 minutes
That’s a more realistic performance for a heater of this size
it’s important to note that the Ellipse was able to maintain that temperature in a larger space on a bitterly cold day
it outperformed heaters of similar size and function
It’s also worth noting that the Ellipse oscillation feature moves heat in a wider arc than other heaters I’ve tested
Its 120-degree path is substantially wider than the 70-degree arcs on similar units
as his favorite chair was on one extreme of that oscillation
Wattage:The Lasko Ellipse pulled an average of 1,355 watts while operating on its highest settings
That’s on par with other heaters I’ve tested of this size
though it’s important to note that all space heaters pull a lot of energy
a much larger dehumidifier only pulls about 400 watts of energy during its highest operation settings
The Lasko Ellipse is a very good tower heater for small and medium size spaces
I would say it will probably meet its match in rooms larger than 500 square feet
but it pumped out an impressive amount of heat in my living room/kitchen
And it maintained the heat setting over time
which bests other heaters I’ve tested of this size and function
The wide oscillation and the long power cord are nice touches that set the Ellipse apart
the remote was reliable during all testing

Space heaters come in all shapes and sizes for different applications, depending on the space and type of heat you want
From ceramic to infrared to electric fireplaces and plug-in baseboard heaters
having a portable space heater is especially convenient because you can move it around your home as needed
Unlike most space heaters, the Lasko portable space heater is approved for bathroom use and supposedly transforms a frigid bathroom into a warm spa
I was excited to test it to see if it lives up to the hype
The internal fan is surprisingly powerful and moves the warm air throughout the room
This bathroom-approved space heater is built for safety and ease of use
With one large three-inch push button on the top of the unit
The large print and visible lights make it user-friendly for nearly any age or ability
So, what makes it safe for bathroom use? According to licensed electrician Ally Childress
it’s an added safety feature called an appliance leakage current interrupter (ALCI) on the plug
If you’re looking for a good-looking tabletop space heater
the Lasko’s soft lines and knob-free design rival even the sleekest devices
this eight-inch-high portable space heater feels solid and stable and weighs less than four pounds
And with the tiny 6-1/4-inch by 6-1/4-inch footprint
it feels right at home on a counter or desk

I love the safety features built into this machine
like the one-hour off setting and the built-in overheat protection
This unit is outfitted with a two-pronged integrated appliance leakage current interrupter (ALCI) safety plug
which acts like a circuit breaker if it senses a power imbalance
you’ll have flexibility with where you place it
The Lasko has a cool-touch exterior and a courtesy power light on the front to let you know the unit is still plugged into a power source
To see how warm the heater would make my bathroom
I placed the thermometer behind the heater
my 60-square-foot bathroom warmed up 8 degrees Fahrenheit on the high heat setting
the overall temperature of the bathroom had risen 12 degrees Fahrenheit
The quiet fan circulates the heat and warms the entire space
It’s louder than my bathroom exhaust fan but not annoyingly loud
I tested the noise level with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) app on my phone
it fell in the range of normal conversation or background music
I might not want this space heater on my desktop while talking on the phone
the sound level in my bathroom was 30 dB before turning the space heater on
(Decibel levels above 85 can damage hearing.)
I rarely use the Lasko portable heater for the entire hour since it heats like a beast on high
I turn it off or down to low once I’m out of the tub
the fan speed and noise level are the same on both the high and low settings
This space heater literally stayed in my bathroom all winter
I used it every time I showered and loved it
And though I put it in the closet once the warm weather arrived
it will be finding its place on the counter once again in just a matter of weeks

Most electric space heaters aren’t designed to heat large spaces
but they’ll warm up a chilly room without turning up the heat for the entire house
Lasko doesn’t recommend leaving it on while unattended for any length of time
Leaving any space heater on without supervision poses a fire risk
keeping combustibles at least 3 feet away from all sides of the heater is best practice
Be sure to check the specs and user manuals for specifics
You’ll also want to purchase one from a reputable brand
and check if the product has met standardized product safety certifications and has Underwriters Laboratories (UL)
Edison Testing Laboratories (ETL) or Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NTRL) listings
A portable space heater shouldn’t be used as your main source of heat
think of it as a supplemental heating source that you’re not running 24/7
never leave a space heater in use unattended

I can now take a shower and complete my ablutions without risking frostbite
I highly recommend this space heater for small rooms.”
“We have an old wall heater that stopped working years ago and have used a variety of heaters to warm the space to varying success,” shares five-star reviewer Courtney Larson
“This heater not only heats the room fantastically
The ease of the button on the top makes turning this on and off wonderful for those of us with joint/muscle issues
I completely recommend this heater for small bathrooms and those who have trouble with knobs and smaller buttons.”

Most space heaters use 1,500 watts of power. To put that in context, using your space heater eight hours per day for a month would add $50.36 to your energy bill, based on the current average electricity rates
They're typically cheaper to run than trying to heat a whole home
Modern space heaters have various features that make them safe for prolonged periods (over hours)
you should still take the above mentioned precautions and turn the space heater off before sleeping
Designs with auto-off settings are convenient and safe
so you don't have to remember to turn it off
While many of the latest space heaters are packed full of safety features
you should still not leave them unattended or let them run while you're sleeping
We recommend getting your bedroom all toasty before bed and turning the heater off when you're about to sleep
a manufacturer's warranty length tells you how long an item is expected to last
The space heaters in our guide have warranties of 1 to 3 years
Using the most recent US Energy Information Administration's average residential electricity rate of 17 cents per kilowatt-hour (as of November 2024)
the cost would be approximately $6.12 for 24 hours of continuous operation
Actual costs will vary based on your local electricity rates
this number is if you run the heater nonstop
we suggest setting the thermostat to the lowest temperature you're comfortable with
portable heaters significantly impact your electricity costs
Based on extensive testing of various models
I've found that even energy-efficient space heaters typically consume at least 750 watts per hour of operation
this is roughly equivalent to running seven LED light bulbs simultaneously
The real cost impact depends on your usage patterns and local electricity rates
the continuous operation of a portable heater can easily add up to $200 to monthly bills in peak winter months
making them considerably less economical than central heating systems for whole-home heating needs
setting the heater's thermostat to the lowest comfortable temperature will help you save
ceramic fan heaters (forced air) raised the temperatures in our test rooms the most
Infrared heaters use electromagnetic waves to heat people and objects directly rather than just warming the air
This results in lower energy consumption and more efficient heat distribution
Oil-filled radiators excel at maintaining consistent temperatures and are virtually silent
When central heating struggles to adequately reach all the corners of your house
the best space heaters excel at supplying focused warmth in poorly insulated or drafty areas
Now that we've reached the thick of winter
incorporating an extra layer of warmth can make a world of difference in your comfort
The best portable heaters can also help lower overall heating costs by supplementing your primary heating source
They're also perfect for spaces beyond homes
like garages and RVs that lack built-in heating systems
efficient unit priced below $30 that's remarkably user-friendly

Best energy-efficient: Boldr Kelvin Space Heater - See at Boldr
The Vornado AVH10 emerged as the best space heater overall thanks to its outstanding performance across several important metrics
This compact powerhouse demonstrated impressive heating capabilities in our controlled tests
raising office temperatures by 18 degrees over five hours — placing it among the most effective units we've evaluated
it increased the temperature across the room by seven degrees
the AVH10 could keep temperatures comfortable
When the room deviated by five degrees from the target
the Vornado would turn on or off to supply stable comfort
it reached the desired 70-degree mark within an hour
The heater balances user experience and safety
it's whisper-quiet compared to competitors
making it perfect for home offices or bedrooms
The comprehensive safety features include overheat protection
and tip-over protection — crucial elements we look for in our top recommendation
stable design further enhances safety while power consumption remains notably efficient
requiring only a brief hold of the power button to activate — no manual consultation needed
though we should note two minor limitations: the absence of a timer function and oscillation
the Vornado AVH10's combination of quiet operation
and remarkable temperature control make it an exceptional choice for most users
Its ease of use and energy efficiency further cement it as our pick for the best space heater
The Lasko Ceramic Portable Space Heater is one of the smallest heaters on this list
it uses a powerful 1,500 watts to heat efficiently for its miniature size
There are three settings (low, high, and fan) and an adjustable temperature dial. The temperature dial uses dots instead of specific temperatures, so it's not intuitive to adjust the unit — I ended up watching a YouTube video
the heat cycling feature kept me comfortable for hours and quietly
so I didn't need to shut it off during Zoom calls
Keep in mind that it's not a whole-room heater
it only increased the overall temperature in my office by about three degrees Fahrenheit
The heater's cool-touch housing didn't heat up during use
but the front grille gets quite hot (though you can expect this with most space heaters)
It'll also shut off automatically if it detects overheating
The manual didn't specify what temperature this function triggers
and I didn't encounter it during my testing
I had to shove it off my desk for it to tip over
The Lasko Ceramic Portable Space Heater was previously the top overall pick in our guide because of its reliability and performance
it's more of a tabletop heater than a whole room
it's the best budget space heater when you're unwilling to turn on the furnace
It's easy to store and tote around the house
The Lasko Duo Comfort Fan and Space Heater delivers exceptional heating performance with notable trade-offs — it operates loudly and doesn't have tip-over protection
It showed impressive heating abilities in our test office
raising the temperature by 21.2 degrees Fahrenheit in five hours
the largest jump we've seen in our heater evaluations
It increased the temperature in our large test room by seven degrees
making it the best space heater for large rooms
Particularly noteworthy is how fast the Lasko FHV801 increased the temperature
it brought the room's temperature to 70 degrees
The heater has four heat settings and a thermostat that goes up to 90 degrees
the unit kept heating after hitting the setpoint
Only the Vornado space heaters and the Boldr unit discussed below could stay at the desired temperature
the Lasko Duo Comfort was among the loudest
though it was still quiet enough not to disrupt my meetings
the Lasko Duo Comfort Fan and Space Heater is the best large space heater you can buy
powerful heating at a reasonable price of under $100
The Honeywell ThermaWave 6 Ceramic Space Heater stands out for its whisper-quiet operation and exceptional heating power
It impressively raised my office temperature by 15 degrees over five hours during testing
though it took longer than other units to reach 70 degrees
it continued heating beyond the target of 70 degrees
reaching 73 degrees by the end of the hourlong test period
A strong point of this model is the user-friendly design
The intuitive control panel requires no manual to master
with straightforward buttons for thermostat settings
an adjustable lever helps direct heat where you want it
Safety features include tip-over protection
Combined with its energy efficiency and quiet operation
the ThermaWave 6 is the best space heater for bedroom use
You can run it through the night without worrying about significant power consumption or safety issues
The Dyson Purifier HP07 Hot+Cool Purifying Fan Heater was among the best in our heating tests
increasing the temperature in my office by nearly 20 degrees in five hours
It was also one of the fastest to reach the target temperature
its $750 price tag is cost-prohibitive for most
and it did an average job of removing particles from the air but was one of the worst at capturing volatile organic compounds (VOCs.)
you're limited in what adjustments you can make to the heater
and choose the precise angle of oscillation you want
but you can't turn it on or change the heat settings
this isn't as user-friendly as most space heaters
The Dyson space heater did a poor job of maintaining temperatures once it achieved them
but the room temperature rose after attaining it
Once the Dyson was below a 45-degree angle with the floor
it turned off and stayed off until I turned it back
the Dyson HP07 used more power than any other heater
so plan on higher long-term costs for electricity and replacing the air filters
The Vornado VHEAT Vintage Metal Heater is the perfect option if you're looking to curate a retro look in your living space
Modeled after the company's original fan release in 1945
the Vornado VHEAT has an attractive look and heavy-duty feel
While it lacks many high-end features commonly found in heaters in this price range
with just a toggle switch to adjust the heat level and a thermostat dial
I didn't need the instructions to get the unit up and running
The Vornado space heater heated my office quickly
the temperature increased another five degrees
The thermostat doesn't have temperatures on it
you slowly turn the dial down until the heat turns off
The heat kicked in once my office dropped two degrees below the target
it was only about as loud as a quiet office environment and didn't disrupt my meetings
but its other safety features functioned properly
Even after running it on high for five hours

The Lasko Space Heater is tiny at 6.5 inches high
making it unobtrusive on any desk or nightstand
There's just one control: the on/off button
and it starts blowing hot air within seconds
it's a personal heater blowing hot air directly at you
It only increased the office's temperature by 2.5 degrees Fahrenheit in two hours
We'd compare the warming effects to wearing a sweater fresh out of the dryer
We were impressed by how quietly the Lasko heater operated
It doesn't automatically turn off when it tips over
which is dangerous since the front of the device gets hot enough to burn your hand
The Lasko MyHeat has earned its spot on my desk for years
I like that it adds a little heat to my office when outdoor temperatures don't warrant cranking the thermostat
it's the best small space heater for staying warm at your desk
The Boldr Kelvin is unlike any space heater we've tested
and you can mount it on your wall like one
so you have this sleek black (or white) piece on your wall that emits heat
The Kelvin comes with all the mounting hardware you need
though we did not mount it on a wall for our testing
which may be a good option for renters who can't mount the heater
which allows you to make heating schedules
except it kept trying to get me to update the firmware
the Boldr only increased my office's temperature by nine degrees in the five-hour testing period
this infrared heater was the only unit we tested that maintained the target temperature in our thermostat test
You can't hear the Kelvin space heater running
You can enter the cost per kWh rate from your electric bill into the app to track how much the Kelvin costs to run
I gauged the accuracy using a smart plug and found it was spot on
and the Kelvin was the most energy-efficient space heater by far
It used about half as much electricity as the average of the other units
you'll save on energy costs in the long term
The Boldr doesn't have tip-over protection
but since you're supposed to mount it to your wall
it's pricey and we want to put it through our air purifying tests before making a final recommendation
this is your next best bet if our large room pick isn't available
It's packed full of safety features and easy to use
it oscillates to send heat throughout the entire room
It heats quickly but was just average at increasing the temperatures in the test room
making it a little harder to move from room to room
It's full-featured with five heat settings
an eco-option to set the temperature to a specific degree
you simply long press the mode button where you can also watch the internal components rotate to the intended use
about $70 more expensive than our large-room pick from Lasko
it was one of the loudest heaters we tested and used more power than average
It was so quiet you couldn't tell it was on
and it has all the safety features we look for
it didn't do a good job of heating the test rooms
Here are some other features you should consider when shopping for a space heater:
Power: Most heaters in our guide have 1,500 watts
More powerful heaters are usually marketed as "garage heaters" and either need to be hardwired into your electrical circuit or run on a special appliance circuit
a heater with 1,500 watts should be enough to heat a room of about 150 square feet
Heat-cycling function: You'll want a space heater with a heat-cycling function for comfort and energy efficiency
This function allows you to select the desired temperature
which the unit then attempts to maintain by cycling on and off when the temperature is above or below the threshold
This is similar to how a built-in thermostat works in your home and prevents you from having to manually turn the unit on and off to maintain comfort
Size: A small space heater is great for desktop use in a home office
It'll usually heat the area around the heater comfortably
which is good enough if you're just looking for a small bubble of personal comfort
A space heater with a bigger footprint has a larger fan
which helps blow air around the room and is ideal for heating large spaces like garages or full rooms
Opt for a full-size heater if you have a lot of space to heat
Safety: Our FAQ section below outlines more safety features to look for
said the number one rule for using a space heater is never to leave it unattended
Here are other safety considerations from the experts:
We put 23 space heaters through the same set of standard tests and used a reference thermometer to collect temperature data
Ability to heat: We tested every heater in a 100-square-foot office with a starting room temperature of 60 to 64 degrees and the home's heating turned off
A reference thermometer was placed in the middle of the room
We then blasted each heater on high for five hours
We ran the same test in a 1,000-square-foot room if a heater was designed for larger spaces
We used the same office setup to test the thermostat and ran the units at 70 degrees
we took readings for the next hour to see if it maintained the temp
Easy-to-use controls: While safety experts recommend reading the manual cover-to-cover before using a space heater
we tried to figure out the units independently before referencing any manuals
We looked for controls that were intuitive and easy to figure out
Noise: We placed a decibel meter 6 feet from the heater to gauge noise as it ran on high
None of the space heaters we recommend were louder than a normal conversation
Safety features: We verified whether safety features were functional (except for the overheating functions
since that would have presented a safety hazard)
including tipping the units over to test for automatic shutoff
we measured how much electricity each unit used while running on high during the five-hour test
the heaters we tested used 1.2 kWh of electricity per hour
which works out to about 22 cents per hour based on average electricity costs
Most space heaters use 1,500 watts of power. To put that in context, using your space heater eight hours per day for a month would add $50.36 to your energy bill, based on the current average electricity rates
Using the most recent US Energy Information Administration's average residential electricity rate of 17 cents per kilowatt-hour (as of November 2024)

Space heaters are a great way to keep your toes from tingling without heating the whole house
when already expensive utility bills can skyrocket
space heaters can be just as useful in the summer months when the AC gets too frosty—as long as your workplace doesn’t forbid them
The best personal space heaters are compact and able to quickly warm a small area while large space heaters can make an entire room toasty
the best space heaters are cost-efficient and effectively warm up the area where they’re used
There’s an inherent danger with using space heaters
as they are a leading cause of home fires in the U.S
The Delonghi HMP1500 is the best spot and room heater
If you want a space heater that does it all
the Delonghi HMP1500 is the best space heater for you
This mica heater aced our spot-heating and room-heating tests
Our thermal sensors recorded this Delonghi space heater outputting a maximum temperature of almost 95°F
It also raised the temperature of a 1,350-cubic-foot room by 6 degrees in an hour
the HMP1500 also has design elements that can fit any lifestyle
People who want their heater to follow them from room to room can install the included wheels
A handle on the back increases portability
If you have a room in your home that needs supplementary heating
the HMP1500 can be mounted to a wall as a permanent fixture
the Lasko 754200 is what most people typically imagine
While this Lasko does not have the versatility of our top pick—it has a fan-only setting—the 754200 is still a good value
the Lasko 754200 is a good option if you need a space heater that can be moved from room to room
It's best for small spaces and features a 6-foot power cord
The AVH10 has a powerful fan and kid-friendly safety features
but our testing found that the sound levels maxed out at a modest 44 decibels at a 4-foot distance
That’s quiet enough to fade into the background noise of most rooms
The AVH10 has an easy-to-read digital thermostat
This lets you dial in and maintain a comfortable temperature for your room without wasting energy
The plastic housing remains cool to the touch
plus a tilt shutoff and overheating protection
which distributes heat well and has strong airflow
The only downside was that the spot heating immediately in front of the heater was less intense than an infrared heater
we found the Honeywell HeatGenius space heater to be a bit of a savant
This ceramic fan-forced Honeywell showed off its smart engineering with how well it utilized its 1500-watt coils
the HeatGenius brought all its air-warming prowess to bear during our spot-heating tests
the HeatGenius has phase heating—a feature that lets you bask in warm
but its usability left something to be desired
The controls are a bit clunky and complicated
We also found the Delonghi HMP1500 more versatile
and able to be wall-mounted or moved on wheels
The Delonghi EW7707CM space heater was a solid performer during our testing
This oil-filled convection radiator-style heater is a solid choice
especially for someone looking to fight a chilly basement
It had an output max temperature of around 83°F
it brought the temperature in our testing room up 3 degrees
we found that the EW7707CM wasn't as good a personal space heater as the De’Longhi HMP1500
you'll sing its virtues if you place it in the basement
Its lowest setting places the EW7707CM on anti-freeze duty
keeping rooms at around 41°F—well above pipe-bursting temperatures
While other space heaters we tested could serve the same purpose
the EW7707CM was more energy efficient than the average heater
If you're going to keep a heater warming the pipes all winter
The Lasko 6435 space heater was the most unique-looking product we tested
with a design that resembles a vase more than a traditional space heater
It's only one of two models we tested that could sit on a desk or window sill and not look amiss
This Lasko was a better spot heater than anything else
meaning it has a motor that waves back and forth
so it can warm up everyone sitting on your couch
the Delonghi Capsule space heater nearly toppled our pick for best value
it’s about 30% more expensive than the Lasko 754200
We suggest you get this one if you are constantly moving your heater from place to place
We found the Capsule’s strap handle comfortable to use and the heater comes in at only 2.9 pounds
there are some things you should think about to make sure that it's a good fit for you and your home
Location: Do you have an area in your home that is 3 feet away from all flammable objects and is not in the middle of a walking path
see if you can clear a place in your home where the space heater can be safely operated
Safety: Does part of the product get hot to the touch while in operation
make sure that kids are aware of what areas are safe to touch on the space heater
it may be best to choose a space heater with a protective grate covering the heating unit
Floor plan: What is the layout of the room(s) you'd like to heat
chances are that a single space heater won't cut it
Space heaters operate best in small spaces and rooms
you may need to safely deploy multiple space heaters in strategic locations throughout your home
If you don't want to buy multiple space heaters
think about picking a space heater that emphasizes whole-room heating over spot heating
Outlet location: Is there an electrical outlet located near the spot where you want the space heater to live
Most electric heater power cords are not long
and space heaters should not be plugged into extension cords
do not plug anything into the same outlet into which the space heater is plugged
Space heaters have various heating methods that can affect the size
Here's a breakdown of the types we reviewed:
mica heaters are part radiant and part convection
Convection heaters that blow warm air out from a fan
Ceramic space heaters are good for spot heating but not for large rooms
The plastic shell may be safe to the touch in some models
Reminiscent of oil-filled radiators you find in old homes
oil-filled convection heaters work well for entire rooms
Their quiet operation makes it great for living rooms
but they're very hot to the touch on all sides and maybe not the best choice for houses with young children
these devices don't actually heat the air so much as beam heat directly at you
This is why infrared heaters are often used outdoors
Their tops and sides are usually cool to the touch
Convection heaters simply have a heating element inside a grate
they are virtually silent when in operation
Most of the space heaters we tested had a mechanism to shut the device off if it got too hot
it's recommended to always have a 3-foot radius between a space heater and anything remotely flammable—including blankets and upholstery
Some also included a tip-over switch that would automatically turn off the machine if it got knocked to the floor
never plug an electric space heater into an extension cord
Portable space heaters draw up to 1,500 watts of power
more than enough to cause a dangerous spark
be sensible and don't touch a space heater when it is in operation
Some portable heaters have a cool exterior when they are running
but that doesn't mean they aren't dangerous
we focused our testing on performance and usability
While we gauged usability with subjective observations
such as how easy the space heater is to operate
performance was measured through data analysis
we placed each heater into a temperature-controlled room
This stability helped us test whether the 1,350 cubic-foot volume room heats to the desired temperature
each heater is placed in the center of the 180-square-foot room and plugged into a watt meter
We then placed two rings of temperature sensors at varying heights to simulate feet and torsos at different distances
These sensors are used to determine spot heating and overall room temperature changes
Each heater is placed on its highest heat settings and left to run for an hour
Heaters that could evenly heat both the inner and outer rings of sensors received the highest ratings

Former infielder Josh Kuroda-Grauer is one of many Scarlet Knights who have succeeded in the majors
After the Fall Classic in October and the Tokyo Series last week
the 2025 MLB season officially returns with its Opening Weekend of baseball this Thursday
along with the rest of the NCAA Division I teams
some former Scarlet Knights will work their way through the minor leagues
hoping to one day make it to the big leagues
Here are updates on the pro careers of a few recent Rutgers athletes
along with where they are in their grind to reach the big leagues
Infielder Josh Kuroda-Grauer elected to put his name in the MLB draft following his junior season on the Banks last year
The 2024 Big Ten Player of the Year, who was second in the country in batting average (.428), was drafted in the third round of the 2024 MLB draft by the Athletics with the 75th pick
raised enough eyebrows in Single-A and High-A for a promotion to the Athletics Triple-A affiliate in Las Vegas
This is usually an uncommon path for young baseball prospects
up to Triple-A — the final level prospects play before they get called up to the majors
Kuroda-Grauer only played in four Triple-A games in 2024, but he generated a .324 batting average and a .763 on-base plus slugging percentage (OPS) through 126 minor-league plate appearances
showcasing the hitting ability that got him drafted
While it isn't certain that Kuroda-Grauer sees the bigs in 2025, his No. 11 MLB.com ranking in the Athletics' farm system suggests he is a worthy option for a call-up to Sacramento one day
Outfielder Ryan Lasko heard his name called in the draft a year before Kuroda-Grauer in 2023. He was drafted higher than his former teammate — second round, 41st overall — but was selected by the same team
a 2022 and 2023 All-Big Ten First Team pick
earned a top 41 selection in the 2023 MLB Draft thanks to his multi-tool talent
Lasko has not had as much success in the minors as Kuroda-Grauer, owning a .228 batting average and .671 OPS in 501 minor league at-bats. Still, the Jackson outfielder progressed from the Arizona Complex League Athletics to the Single-A Stockton Ports and then to the High-A Lansing Lugnuts over the course of his career thus far
Lasko ranks at No. 20 in the Athletics' farm system
He appeared in one spring training game this season and scored a run after getting hit by a pitch
Infielder and Knights home run king Chris Brito was bound to get a shot in the majors. Passing all-time program great and 2015 Home Run Derby champion Todd Frazier helps in generating looks from scouts
Following the 2023 season with Rutgers, Brito was signed by the Kansas City Royals
he has climbed his way up the ranks of the minor leagues
Double-A and Triple-A affiliates of the Royals
In 214 minor league at-bats, Brito has hit for a .252 batting average and a solid .736 OPS
which might hold him back from reaching the majors
Brito is stationed with the Double-A affiliate of the Royals — the Northwest Arkansas Naturals
Kuroda-Grauer and Lasko aren't the only former Knights to be drafted by the Athletics. In 2023, former right-handed pitcher Drew Conover was selected by the West Coast team in the 11th round of the 2023 MLB Draft
Conover, who hails from Pittstown, has pitched in four different levels of the minors: Rookie
started seven of them and has accumulated an 11.20 earned run average (ERA) with 52 strikeouts in 41 innings pitched
Conover will likely pitch for the Athletics organization in High-A
Left-handed pitcher Justin Sinibaldi was selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 14th round of the 2024 MLB Draft
While he made 13 starts for Rutgers and pitched for a stellar 3.47 ERA in 2024, he has only made three starts in the minors. The pitcher from New Brunswick has allowed 6 runs
He will remain in Single-A with the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers to begin the 2025 MLB season
Left-handed pitcher Donovan Zsak was selected by the Cleveland Guardians in the eighth round of the 2024 MLB Draft
Zsak found his groove out of the bullpen for Rutgers
The Scotch Plains southpaw threw for 39 strikeouts in 35 innings
Zsak has had similar success for the Guardians' Single-A affiliate — the Lynchburg Hillcats
Zsak has tossed nine and two-thirds innings with 13 strikeouts and a 1.86 ERA
He will look to keep it up with the Hillcats in 2025
Santa Maria has yet to appear in a minor league game and was assigned to the Florida Complex League Rays last August

he has looked like the on-base machine he was in Piscataway
Through 61 at-bats, Lasko has posted a .295 batting average while driving in eight runs. During that stretch, the talented 21-year-old outfielder has shown some power (like he did at Rutgers) with three home runs and four doubles
He entered the month with one home run in his minor league career
For many at Rutgers, Lasko’s recent success has come as no surprise. During his career as a Scarlet Knight
the Jackson Memorial High School product posted a .314 batting average in 156 games
but Lasko always found a way to get on base
Another catch by Ryan Lasko! pic.twitter.com/6VuY7evpip
— James (@JamesLasko26) June 9, 2024
As Lasko has seen his average steadily rise
he has also made a difference on the bases
he has added seven stolen bases to his resume after recording just four May
That has made life more difficult for opposing pitchers
Lasko’s recent play has been a welcome sign
he did not look like a player worthy of a second-round pick
Lasko has improved just like he did in college and raised his average from .197 to .226
the former 41st overall pick could be in High-A before the 2024 campaign ends

The Misto cools down your outdoor space using a blower fan and mist
I was very curious to see how it worked and decided to put it to the test
It's easy to set up and offers a cool breeze—just be prepared to get wet
Here's what I think of the Lasko Misto misting fan
The Lasko Misto features three misting nozzles
Lasko has been a leader in high-quality fans for over a hundred years and frequently has products that rank on our function ga4_link78() { window.dataLayer.push(JSON.parse('{"event":"click_inarticle"}')) }best-right-now fan list
The Lakso Misto is a portable misting fan that can reduce outdoor air temperatures by 25 degrees
The Misto is designed for your convenience
It effortlessly connects to a standard hose hookup
you can easily find your ideal comfort level
there is a 90-degree pivoting capability to tilt the blower up and down
You can also choose if you want to use the fan with or without the mister
measuring just 6/25 inches long and under 15 inches in height (about the size of a toaster oven) and weighing 16 pounds
It features a three-prong grounded safety plug that automatically cuts power to the fan if an electrical fault is detected
This safety feature ensures your peace of mind while you enjoy the cool breeze
it's a cooling solution that can transform your outdoor experience
Be sure to have yours ready; you’ll need that extra length to position the fan
The fan has a 72-inch power cord and uses Blue Plug safety fuse technology
so it can be safely placed almost anywhere outdoors
I set up my towel and chair about seven feet from the unit and started on the lowest setting
so I continued moving the chair until I found a comfortable spot around 14 feet away
I was almost 20 feet away before I found my ideal positioning
The 9-foot water supply hose with a convenient shut-off valve easily attaches to your garden hose
The Lasko Misto is a breeze to set up and use
especially if you have a garden hose and a three-prong extension cord ready
I had to quickly search the garage to find the correct extension cord when I realized that the attached cord wasn’t long enough
you're just a few steps away from enjoying a cool outdoor space
you can attach the water supply hose to it and turn on the speed switch
This saves you from turning the spigot on and off as you play with the settings
Note that if the speed button is set to zero
It would help if you turned the shut-off valve to completely stop the water flow
Another great feature of the Lasko Misto is the 90-degree pivoting blower
Depending on the location and height of your seat and the size of the area you are trying to cool
the ability to adjust the height of the misters is critical
I used a lawn chair during my testing and found that the highest-level pivot worked best for me
The three different speed levels are also excellent because you can increase how intense the fan is blowing depending on how cool you want it to get
Even if you don’t have a water supply available
allowing you to use the fan without the misters
This flexibility puts you in control of your comfort
The Misto is strong and durable without being bulky
and the built-in handle makes it easy to transport
The unit has a low profile for extra stability
Be aware that the area surrounding the Misto will get wet
and how high or low you have fan settings will impact the performance
Finding the ideal distance to set up the fan to avoid excess moisture takes a little trial and error
but I would keep it on a hard surface or prop it on something to avoid the ground getting too soggy
you probably think of the fan head moving side to side or up and down
The oscillate button doesn’t make the fan move
I didn’t really notice a difference when I pressed the button
The biggest complaint about the Misto is from users who get excessively wet when using it
it is essential to understand how environmental factors impact how much moisture is absorbed in the air
There is also a lot of disappointment and confusion around the oscillate button
Use the Lasko Misto as a misting fan or turn off the water source and use it as a regular fan
The Lasko Misto misting fan will help you maximize the use of your outdoor space
Be prepared with your garden hose and extension cord to make set-up a breeze
While there is some trial and error to find the ideal settings for whatever the day's weather brings
it is well worth getting wet when you know you will dry off quickly
Play around with the unit and get a feel for the three different blower speeds before adding the mist component
I enjoyed seeing how strong the fan performed and how far its reach was
Suppose you are aware that the fan itself doesn’t oscillate
then you won’t be disappointed with that feature
The Lasko Misto outdoor misting fan uses the power of a fan combined with mist to cool down your outdoor spaces on the hottest of days.

but that’s precisely what makes it so effective at cooling down your space in a flash
it’s also affordable and surprisingly compact
but those are far from the only reasons to love this ingenious AC alternative
so you can connect more floor fans to it and spread them out in a big space
Whether you need a compact fan to keep in your camper or a tool to help dehumidify your home
“[I’ve] seen this type of fan at a place of business to dry wet floors
Bought one for my home to help circulate air and help the AC run less
If I hold my hand over the force of the air coming from this little fan
it can hold the weight of my arm up by itself!” — Lecpo

Space heaters increase the air temperature which increases the amount of water air can absorb
This is because warm air can hold more moisture than cold air
moisture isn’t being removed as it would be when using a dehumidifier
it's advised to only run space heaters for a few hours
and should never be left running overnight
and to avoid the risk of it toppling over or overheating
you should opt for space heaters with a thermostat
or safety features such as automatic shut-off if they get too hot
These will all minimize the risk of a potential fire
While there are estimates that a space heater can last anywhere from 16 to 20 years
how long one actually stays in good working order depends on how much it’s used
If you see the cord is damaged or fraying or notice sparks or odd smells from the heater or the outlet
stop using it immediately and replace it with a new one
Other signs that it’s time to buy a new model include ceramic panels that are cracked
you’ll find the latest models are more attractive so they will look less obtrusive sitting in your family or guest room
Many space heaters now have electronic controls and some even come with a remote so that you can turn them on and off without leaving your desk or the sofa
You can now also find space heaters that double up as fans
or air purifiers so that you get more for your money
Here are the best space heaters to keep you toasty all year round
The best space heaters are an efficient way to heat up cold rooms
you plug in the heater and warm a specific space or just point a compact model at yourself for some quick heat
Since it's hard to know how they fare until they're in your home, we put the best space heaters to the test, checking the effectiveness and efficiency of each model. That's how we landed on the Lasko FH500 as the top choice for most people
It quickly heats up your space, has a reliable remote, and isn't too noisy. Plus, it doubles as a tower fan for the summer. But if you're looking for a cheaper or smaller option, we recommend the Vornado VH200 Heater
These aren't your only choices — we've tested and rated many models to help you find the best space heater for your home
This is easily the best space heater for most rooms
It's a dual-use fan for summer and tower heater for winter
The unit warmed up our rooms effectively and efficiently
a digital thermostat and a reliable and easy to use remote

and raised the temperature perfectly evenly by 10 degrees Fahrenheit
It was also quick to heat up; within 12 seconds
it drew an average amount of energy in relation to the other heaters
there is an eco mode if you want to save on your bills; after you set a precise temperature
the power cycles on and off to reduce energy consumption
The fan can be set to oscillate for even distribution of heat
And you can also set a timer to shut the unit off automatically after up to 8 hours
None of the surfaces on the Lasko itself present a burn hazard if you’ve got children running around
Inside the Lasko there’s a permanent filter which needs to be popped in before first use and then vacuumed every two weeks to keep it in top condition
This heater can be controlled by its panel or by a remote control
which you can store in a pocket on the back of the tower
The internal fan is useful for distributing the heat when it's cold
but this specific model also pulls double-duty as a regular cooling tower fan for the summer
but the added dual-function makes it easily the best space heater
it was still able to increase the temperature of a small room by about 6 degrees Fahrenheit in just 20 minutes and provide even heating across the room
you’ll feel warmer in as little as 30 seconds
The Vornado uses an average amount of energy in relation to other space heaters; about 0.26 kWh
you can use the numbered thermostat dial to turn down the temperature and save energy
all of the Vornado’s surfaces stay cool to the touch
so you don’t need to worry about accidentally burning yourself
this was the quietest space heater we tested; it sounds more or less like a humming refrigerator so it shouldn’t interfere with a phone call or a TV show
We think the Vornado VH200 is a great choice if you’re looking for a small and unobtrusive space heater that still has the power to heat up a room
it’s great value for the money at less than $100
which is why we think it’s one of the best space heaters around right now
With its wooden casing and rectangular shape
Infrared Heater DR-998 could be mistaken for a sub woofer speaker
It’s well constructed and looks substantial
While it would fit in well in a room with a lot of wood furniture and a warm color scheme
it might not suit every decor in the same way
When running on a high heat setting in our 15 x 10-foot test room
it was able to increase the temperature by about 4 degrees Fahrenheit and this heat was distributed fairly evenly with just a 2 degree difference around the room
When placed close to where we were sitting
it was able to warm us up in under 30 seconds
This heater uses an average amount of energy compared to the other space heaters we tested
well-marked control buttons and an LED display that shows the settings with easy-to-read numbers
This heater can also be used as a humidifier as well as a fan for cooling
and you can set it to oscillate up to 360 degrees for a more even distribution of air
this is a heavy and hard-to-lift space heater
it has wheels that make it easy to roll across the floor or into a closet for storage
A timer allows you to set the heater to automatically turn off up to 12 hours later
a remote is included with the unit as well
The exterior surfaces of this heater won't burn you and when it’s on its highest setting
it sounds about as noisy as a running dishwasher at 51.7 decibels
you’ll need to remove the filter and clean it with a vacuum and wash out the water tank
The Dyson Purifier Hot + Cool HP07 is way more expensive than just about any space heater on the market
though its modern look may not appeal to everyone
so you are essentially getting three appliances in one
the Dyson Purifier Hot + Cool HP07 raised the temperature very evenly on its highest setting
increasing the temperature by 7 to 8 degrees Fahrenheit in 20 minutes
it used more energy than any other model we tested
In spite of the fact that the Dyson has many functions
and turn on a night mode to dim the display and slow down the fan speed
You can only operate the heating element of this appliance with the remote and if you lose it
All of the surfaces on the heater stay totally cool
so there’s no chance whatsoever that anyone will get burned from touching it
which makes it very safe in cooling mode as well as very easy to clean
the Dyson reaches a sound level of 55.8 decibels
which is about as loud as a coffee maker — it’s roughly the same as most of the heaters we tested
The Dyson uses a two-piece HEPA and carbon filter to trap gasses and particles
which the company claims includes allergens
you will have to replace the filter once a year at a cost of $80
The Lasko Ellipse CT18950 is easily one of the best tower space heaters we've tested
It performed excellently in small and medium-sized rooms
and was able to maintain the temperature with seemingly little effort
this is because tower units are larger and can distribute more warm air as they oscillate
but it's also due to the Ellipse CT18950's elongated design
so you don't risk sudden shocks or injuries if you touch the exterior
and the digital thermostat keeps the unit running until it edges just above your target temperature
some great space heaters are let down by a terrible remote
The Ellipse CT18950's remote worked reliably
and was easy to use for temperature adjustments and power settings
The overall package is good enough that it could knock the Lasko FH500 off the top spot
but not a substantial amount considering that it bundles an impressive heater and cooling fan for summer
But if you don't need the combination model
the Lasko Ellipse CT18950 is a great option for the colder months
and it won't break the bank either; from electricity costs or the initial purchase
The Amazon Basics Small Space Heater is exactly what it claims to be — a compact heater for warming up the air immediately where you’re sitting or lounging
It’s perfect if you don’t want to spend a bundle and don’t need to warm up a whole room
but feel chilly when you’re working at your desk or reading a book
The unit is a little box that at 5.9 x 3.2 x 6 inches is almost pocket size
it was able to raise the temperature in our 15 x 10 foot test room evenly by only about 2.5 degrees Fahrenheit
it has the lowest energy consumption of all the other heaters we reviewed — only 0.12 kWh
This heater couldn’t be easier to use as it has just one heat setting
particularly on the front where we recorded a temperature of 123°F
We measured a sound level of 51.4 decibels
which is a tad loud for an object that will be quite close to you
it’s easy to tote from room to room and it’s so small that it won’t take up much room in a closet when it’s not being used — it could even be stashed in an office desk drawer
The Honeywell 360 Degree Surround Heater is a no-nonsense model for heating a small area
It’s perfect if you’re looking to take the chill off when you’re working at a desk or hunkered down on the couch
the Honeywell 360 Degree Surround Heater was only able to get a 15 x 10-foot room 2 to 5 degrees Fahrenheit warmer (depending on where you stood) and didn’t heat particularly evenly
It uses an average amount of energy when heating
With only two buttons and two heat settings
there’s a variable thermostat that you can use to stabilize the temperature
the surfaces of the unit heat up by about 10 degrees above room temperature
but it’s nowhere near enough to be a burn hazard
this was the loudest space heater we tested
so it’s not ideal if you’re trying to watch TV while it’s running
On top of the unit there’s a handle that makes it very convenient to move around
and at 5.4 pounds it’s pretty lightweight
This heater is a good value for what it brings to the table
which is why it makes the list as one of the best space heaters
but you should only use it in smaller rooms
If you want a space-saving yet powerful heater
the Dreo Smart Wall Heater is a great option
it's easy to mount on the wall and has a stylish
discreet design that won't look out of place
It comes with adjustable louvers for directing the air to where it’s needed and it’s simple to adjust the heater with its panel
Dreo app or with voice commands via Alexa or Google Assistant
With more than enough warming potential for the average
We tested all four heating modes (including Eco) and were impressed at how rapidly the Dreo circulated heat around the room
It particularly worked well in our tester's 150 square foot hallway where the temperature can drop below 45 degrees Fahrenheit during winter
which has a simple interface and is straightforward to use
We were able to check the heater’s status and temperature from upstairs
this isn't the quietest space heater we tested
And the fact that it's on the wall means that you can pretty much set and forget that it's even there
this heater is great value for its fast heat output and handy smart features
(Image credit: Future)(Image credit: Future)9. Ecoflow Wave 2 Best heat pumpOur expert review:
The EcoFlow Wave 2 isn't cheap — at $1,300, it's by far the most expensive space heater on this list. However, unlike every other model here, the Wave 2 can also act as a smart air conditioner
It's capable of heating a room at up to 6,100 BTUs per hour and cooling it at 5,100 BTUs per hour
That's good enough for a 110-square foot room
The Wave 2 can be controlled using a touch panel or through the EcoFlow app
which we found very easy to use; unlike many space heaters
we could fine-tune the temperature controls
and even create schedules for it to turn on and off
While you can plug the Wave 2 into an outlet
it can also be paired with a battery or solar panel if you want to use it off the grid
which makes it well suited for those living the van life
we found that the Wave 2 effectively heated and cooled various rooms in our home
and did so efficiently — it consumed 4.3 watts of power when idle and 536 watts when heating — and was a quiet 57.2dBA when warming our room
but one that could be worth it over the long haul
We test many more space heaters than we recommend in our main roundup and only suggest the models we genuinely think are the best space heaters
But that doesn't mean the others we try are bad
if you're after more options here are the space heaters that didn't quite make the cut
We were pleased with how well it heated the space
if you want a heater to put on and leave in smaller rooms
But it's hard to recommend for performance; it's loud and not as efficient as models that cost about half the price
we time how quickly each space heater can heat up the air directly in front of it
We also measure the temperatures either side within a 15 x 10 foot room after each heater has operated for 20 minutes on its highest heat setting — this is to check for evenness and consistency
we time how long each space heater takes to significantly boost the room’s temperature
we take the floor’s temperature to check how much heat is wasted
we track the energy used on the minimum and maximum heat levels to determine the energy efficiency
We then measure five different surface temperatures on each heater as well as the floor in front of it to see if there was a burning hazard
or if the appliance wastes energy heating the floor
we run the appliance on its highest setting to test the noise output
and measure the space heater’s external temperature to ensure against burning hazards
We also take into account added safety features
including tip-over protection and automatic shut-off
The most expensive ones look better and can do more than just heat — they can also cool off a room and may even be able to humidify or purify the air
they’re also larger and less portable
Safety Features: When you buy a space heater
or CSA International insignia which tells you that it has been tested and certified by a third party organization
make sure it will shut off automatically if it tilts
One heater we tested — the Lasko 754200 — lacks this feature
which is why it didn’t make the list of the best space heaters
Any heater that you consider purchasing should have a sturdy cord that is at least six feet long
Heating Capacity: The wattage of a space heater is an important factor in determining how large an area it will warm up
a heater needs 10 watts of power to heat each square foot of space
That means to heat up an average-sized room
you’ll want at least a 1,500-watt heater
But take into the account the height of your ceilings and the level of insulation in the room
as this will have a reflection on the area that will need heating and how much energy will escape
An oscillating fan helps disperse heat more evenly
Thermostat: A space heater that has a thermostat allows you to fine tune the temperature and keep it at a level you find comfortable
An electronic thermostat with precise temperature settings will give you the best control
Often manufacturers refer to the thermostat as an eco setting as it saves energy by only using as much power as needed to keep a steady temperature
Other features to consider: A timer that will automatically shut the heater off is handy as you won’t have to worry about whether or not you remembered to do it
you can turn the heater on and off without putting your book down or tearing yourself away from the TV
If you plan to use the heater in various rooms
you’ll find a handle makes it easy to carry

A space heater is a no-brainer if you're looking to save money on your energy bill during the winter
Our team found the Vornado VH2 Whole Room Heater to be the best overall space heater
and provides consistent heat without making too much noise
it performed well when it came to heating up and circulating air throughout the room
we've found plenty of other great options worth exploring as well
Read more: Ready to Pull Out Your Space Heater? Here's How Much It'll Cost You
Vornado's models topped just about every best list out there where space heaters are concerned
so you can't go wrong with a variety of Vornado products
no matter your space or heat needs this season
with the VH2 being its most consistently singled-out performer
This whole-room space heater circulates heated air throughout a medium-sized room
maintaining a consistent temperature without a significant space requirement
It is reported to be among the quietest models available
with several users remarking that it was quiet enough to sleep with while operating
Its plastic exterior stays comparatively cool to the touch
making it among the safest bets for households with pets and children
making it easy to address technical issues should any arise
At a fraction of the space imprint of the Vornado model above
Lasko's Ceramic Heater 754200 is an excellent starting place if you're still in a trial mindset where a space heater is concerned
Lasko also had a preponderance of mentions for several models among review sites.
Its compact size is better suited to smaller spaces such as small bedrooms or home offices
or even desktop or counter use rather than an entire room
If you live with a perpetually warm person
this may be an ideal model for creating different heat zones within the same room
users report that it warms up quickly and reliably -- ideal for helping you get out of bed on a chilly morning -- and its lightweight nature makes it especially easy to move around the house with you as your additional heat needs dictate.
While the previous two models were the most singled out among product testing sites
this Honeywell model had one of the highest user ratings on retailers' sites
The feature here that significantly sets it apart from every other model is its 360 degrees of air circulation
relying on top and bottom vents to pull in air and circulate warm air around its circumference
Several users mentioned that its multidirectional airflow made it especially useful for bedroom use to create ambient warmth in a medium-sized space without an intense
Good news for those with mid-century decor who can't bear the thought of an industrial appliance interrupting their curated look
Vornado's VHeat Vintage Metal Heater manages to be both aesthetically pleasing and functional
called out by basically every review site I considered
Vornado's products overall tended to top the lists of best space heaters
and this model is more than just attractive
with users reporting it delivered sufficient heat to a small space on both its low and high settings
none are as disappointing when overly chilly as your bathroom
Who wants to get out of a hot shower on a cold day and be greeted with the rude awakening of arctic air on wet skin
You can't put just any space heater in the bathroom
which adds additional safety considerations because of the moisture element
Among those that are specifically designed to be bathroom-safe
not to mention Amazon's bestseller in space heaters overall because of its versatility and price
The Dreo DR-HSH004A is equipped with a special safety plug that cuts the power immediately upon contact with water
and its small footprint makes it ideal for one of the smallest rooms in your house with the biggest heat needs
with many people pointing out that it was especially ideal for allergy sufferers
are some of the best options for heating a large space such as a larger bedroom or living room
Their radiant heat is capable of reaching more space both vertically and horizontally because of its size and functionality
This model also had one of the highest user ratings among retail sites
with many users mentioning how quiet it ran
and singling out the utility of the remote control and digital display
which is a less common feature among the space heaters I researched
Several also commented how this space heater felt like it was capable of heating the whole room
rather than just delivering heat to its immediate surroundings
Our list of space heaters was aggregated from numerous review sites for those models that were most frequently mentioned
as well as bestselling models at major retailers such as Amazon
I researched the space heaters in this list by analyzing specs and user reviews
diving deep for mentions of persistent issues
and considering the available features and functionality compared to price as a measure of each model's overall value
I focused primarily on those models that had extremely high user ratings
typically 4.5 and above with at least 1,000 ratings
While I didn't bring every model home and perform extensive hands-on testing
I was able to examine most models in person to get a feel for the design
footprint and intuitiveness of its controls
Space heaters come in all shapes and sizes and use different elements to heat a room
We're here to help you find the perfect fit for winter.
Most electric space heaters that operate solely in that function (and not as a dual air purifier) are priced below $150
with many models on this list costing less than $100
well-regarded budget models may even run you less than $50
number of settings and heating element all contribute to the overall cost of a space heater
There are no standard sizes or shapes for electric space heaters
and most of the space heaters I researched did not specify the square footage for coverage
other than to mention its capacity to heat a "small to medium" space or to specify room types such as a bedroom or office
Space heaters may be indicated as tabletop
floor or bathroom models and many also come as tall but narrow "tower" models
that have a smaller footprint and therefore a smaller horizontal space requirement.
While this list consists only of electric space heaters
(as opposed to water- or oil-heated models,) there are several different mechanisms that electric space heaters may utilize to create heated air
Fan-forced: Fan-forced space heaters circulate air by pulling it into the unit and passing it over a heating element
expelling the heated air through exhaust vents in the unit
Infrared: Infrared bulbs are those which convert electricity into radiant heat
This is the least common type among the space heaters we included here
Ceramic: Ceramic space heaters utilize electricity to heat a ceramic plate within the unit
which then emits radiant heat into the air
with or without the additional use of a fan
The simple answer is yes, a space heater can be a fire hazard, and therefore is an appliance that must be utilized correctly and with caution. For more information on how to safely run your space heater, check out our story on space heater best practices
such as tip-over or overheating protection to reduce the risk of fire or injury
This doesn't eliminate all the risks of having a space heater in your home
especially if your household has children or pets
Space heaters work by emitting heated air in the immediate area
heating a small to medium-sized space without needing to use a central heating system
Space heaters work via several possible mechanisms
typically either radiant heat with a ceramic heating unit
or fan-forced (which utilizes air circulation) or both
Space heaters typically receive positive reviews from those who use them
and while most of the space heaters I studied did not specify a coverage area
a well-functioning space heater should provide sufficient heat to its immediate area to be able to lower the thermostat on your central heating system
The effectiveness of a space heater is largely based on where you place it
since it depends on the initial conditions of the space you are trying to heat
a larger room with a high ceiling and an open floor plan may be more difficult to heat overall than a smaller
Your space heater model should include instructions on placement for best use
but typically a space heater should be placed within an enclosed area that you are trying to heat
You should try not to place space heaters against a wall
near any flammable fabrics such as curtains or any place where moisture is a present (except for models that are specifically designed for bathroom use)
it is not safe to leave a space heater on all night
particularly near flammable materials like curtains or carpets

There isn’t a single best tower fan brand for everyone
but some manufacturers consistently make high-performing models
The experts we spoke with recommend top brands like Dyson
the right pick comes down to what you need
a smart-connected fan or something powerful enough for large rooms
but it can make a room feel cooler by increasing airflow
“Fans make you feel cool by moving air across your skin to create a cooling effect without lowering the air temperature,” says Prouty
a high-velocity fan with strong airflow and wide oscillation—like the Vornado ARA or Dyson AM07—helps circulate air more effectively
Pairing a tower fan with an air conditioner or an open window can also help distribute cool air and make the room feel more comfortable
If you’re looking for something that goes beyond air circulation
an evaporative air cooler may be a better option
but they utilize water evaporation to provide cooler-feeling air,” says Prouty
though they work best in dry climates with low humidity
The best tower fans keep air moving without taking up too much space in your home
Dimensions: 12.8 inches x 12.8 inches x 42.5 inches | Settings: 12 speeds plus auto, sleep, natural, normal | Timer: 1 to 12 hours | Remote: Yes | Oscillation: Yes; 30, 60, 90, 120 degrees | Noise range: 25 decibels (at lowest setting)
A good tower fan should cool down a room without calling too much attention to itself. The Dreo Smart Tower Fan Pilot Max S does exactly that: It pushes air at speeds up to 27 feet per second while staying quieter than most refrigerators. Even on its highest setting, it never feels too loud, and on low, it hovers around 25 decibels—that’s so soft, you’ll probably forget it’s running.
Another underrated feature is that it’s truly a breeze to clean. Many tower fans require taking apart the whole unit just to clear out dust, but this one has a removable rear grill, so maintenance takes a few minutes instead of an entire afternoon.
Dimensions: 36 x 12 x 12 inches | Settings: 4 speeds, timer, dark mode | Timer: 1 to 15 hours | Remote: Yes | Oscillation: Yes; up to 60 degrees | Noise range: 64.5 decibels (at highest setting)
Even though this is a more affordable option, it still checks the main boxes that tech expert Prouty recommends: multiple speed settings and a wide oscillation angle to circulate air efficiently. The included remote control operates all the fan’s functions and can be stored on the back of the fan when it’s not in use.
Dimensions: 36.3 x 7.5 x 4.4 inches | Settings: 10 speeds | Timer: 15 minutes to 9 hours | Remote: Yes | Oscillation: Yes; up to 70 degrees | Noise range: 61 decibels (at highest setting)
The Dyson Cool Tower Fan AM07 takes everything people love about tower fans—strong airflow, a slim profile and quiet operation—and refines it with Dyson’s signature engineering. Instead of traditional blades, it uses proprietary Air Multiplier technology to amplify surrounding air, which creates a smooth and uninterrupted breeze. This produces powerful airflow without the choppy feeling you get from standard fans.
With 10 speed settings and a 70-degree oscillation range, this model also gives you more control than most. Whether you want a light breeze or strong circulation for a larger space, it’s easy to adjust. The programmable sleep timer lets you set it to turn off anywhere between 15 minutes and 9 hours, while night mode reduces noise for better sleep.
And unlike fans with exposed blades that can collect dust, the bladeless design makes it easier to clean: Just wipe it down with a cloth, no disassembly required. It has built-in safety features, including an automatic shutoff if it gets tipped over, and the magnetized remote attaches to the top of the fan, so it’s always within reach.
Dimensions: 11.8 x 11.8 x 36.2 inches | Settings: 4 speeds plus auto, sleep, natural, normal | Timer: Up to 8 hours | Remote: Yes | Oscillation: Yes; 90 degrees | Noise range: 28 to 48 decibels
Some fans provide white noise, but if you’re sensitive to sound, you might prefer one that’s nearly silent. The Dreo Tower Fan Nomad One is one of the quietest models available, operating at just 28 decibels on its lowest setting. (For context, a whisper is louder than that.) Even on higher speeds, it runs more smoothly than most models.
This fan is also great for bedrooms, thanks to its dedicated sleep mode. Along with reducing noise, it mutes button beeps and dims the display so you’re not distracted by glowing lights. And the built-in timer lets you set it to turn off automatically after up to eight hours.
Though it’s compact and quieter than many of the fans on our list, this one still moves air efficiently. A 90-degree oscillation range helps distribute airflow across a room, and you can choose between four speeds and four modes to customize how much air it circulates. The rear grill and impeller wheel are also removable, which makes it much easier to clean than many tower fans.

The Vornado ARA Oscillating Tower Fan is designed to move air through an entire room
making it the most powerful tower fan in Vornado’s lineup
With five speed settings and up to 180 degrees of oscillation
it circulates air more effectively than many standard models
it’s quiet enough for a bedroom (as low as 29 decibels)
open-concept spaces and other areas that need serious airflow
the multiple speed settings let you dial it down so it doesn’t feel overwhelming
Another small but thoughtful feature is the built-in ambient lighting
which adds a subtle glow to the room and can be adjusted or turned off completely
To find the best tower fans, we researched and compared different models, price points and features. Some of our selections are highly rated by experts and customers alike, while others were recommended by trusted professionals.
There isn’t a single best tower fan brand for everyone, but some manufacturers consistently make high-performing models. The experts we spoke with recommend top brands like Dyson, Rowenta, Dreo and Honeywell for their quality, reliability and airflow. In the end, the right pick comes down to what you need. Whether it’s a budget-friendly model, a smart-connected fan or something powerful enough for large rooms, different brands have different strengths.
Not exactly. Tower fans move air, but they don’t actually cool it. If you’re looking for something that goes beyond air circulation, an evaporative air cooler may be a better option. “These will also move air like a fan, but they utilize water evaporation to provide cooler-feeling air,” says Prouty. Honeywell makes some of the best models, though they work best in dry climates with low humidity.
When the chill sets in, there’s only so much that wool socks, slippers, and fuzzy fleeces can do — especially if the heating in your building is a little slow to turn on sometimes (in which case

A ceramic space heater works by heating up a ceramic plate and uses a convection fan to distribute this warmth outward
this style of heater will provide a more immediate effect compared with the slower burn of an oil-based one
and eventually succeed in heating up a larger space for longer periods
Although the CPSC offers guidelines for safely utilizing space heaters (as well as an archive of products recalled for safety issues)
it does not enforce any mandatory safety features
“there are voluntary industry standards” that some manufacturers will choose to meet
Underwriters Laboratory (UL) and Intertek (ETL)
and products approved by these labs will be advertised as such
“When you see the markings of an accredited laboratory
you know that that product has been manufactured to those standards,” Hoehn-Saric advises
look for those markings.” National Fire Protection Association communications manager Susan McKelvey told me the same thing: “Our only general guideline for buying a space heater is to check that it bears the mark of an independent testing laboratory
which ensures that the product meets established safety standards.”
“The only scenario where a space heater is ecofriendly or energy efficient is when it’s used to reduce the amount of energy a central heating system uses
you might want to warm up just one room or a small section of a house
If doing so means turning off the central heating system

I looked specifically for an affordable model that could heat a small room without fuss and had strong safety features
This little Lasko meets all those criteria and then some
Its highly adjustable thermostat offers 11 temperature settings
The air it emits is warm but ambient; unlike other space heaters I’ve used in the past
I never feel like my skin is being blasted with unnecessarily hot
the cooling-fan mode provides immediate relief
This heater has both overheat protection and a tip switch that’s remarkably sensitive — the power shuts off as soon as you lift the hidden handle on top
it’s less likely to topple than larger models anyway
If you’re looking for a space heater to take the edge off for a few hours when your radiator isn’t doing the trick
While it won’t win any prizes for looks (if those are a consideration
see a few more aesthetically pleasing options below)
it gets the job done and is compact enough to be stored away when not in use
I also looked for an affordable oscillating tower heater that offered smart features
and found this one that can be controlled three different ways: via its front-panel LED touchscreen
or by using a voice-controlled smart-home device like Google Home or Alexa
which is simple to install via a QR code found in the quick-start manual
The app’s interface is simple and intuitive
allowing the user to turn the heater on and off
switch between three different heating modes
and set a timer or target temperature for the room you’re heating
You can also toggle a motion-detector timer on and off
which will tell the heater to automatically power down after a certain number of minutes without moving bodies in the room
The other safety features are also great: The heater remains cool to the touch during use
and the touchscreen buttons also turn off automatically if the heater isn’t standing completely upright
The 45-degree oscillation is effective at heating up my large living room
I did find myself wishing for a cooling fan mode
but this heater does otherwise offer an extremely fine degree of temperature control

On a quest for a more compact and powerful heater that looked slightly less like a robot, I found this Vornado that comes recommended by Lyons Den Power Yoga founder Bethany Lyons
Compared with those by other brands she’s tried
And while some people doing hot yoga at home will use several small heaters at once
this one is powerful enough to heat up your whole room
overheat protection | Efficiency: 200 watt
I also tested this cute little under-the-desk buddy that’s essentially a smaller and more colorful version of the best overall space heater above
While it definitely won’t warm up the room
it’s great for keeping your feet or hands toasty and is very quiet
I have been keeping a test unit on my desk and moving it around as needed for the past month
and have found it to be a great stopgap on chilly days
There’s no temperature or fan adjustability
but the air it blasts is warm without becoming uncomfortably hot or dry
I’ve left the room and accidentally kept mine running for hours
and the casing never even became warm to the touch
Heating style: Ceramic | Safety features: Cool-touch
My editor Simone Kitchens owns an older model of this slightly retro Honeywell heater
which will suit those who are design-minded yet unwilling to invest in a pricey Vornado
This heater doesn’t forgo safety for style either — with its cool-touch housing
Kitchens says these heaters do their best work in the bathroom
and she places one under a kitchen bench for use on chilly mornings
if you’re sick of mid-century-modern aesthetics
this heater offers a pleasingly elegant Mediterranean-inspired look
Strategist junior writer Brenley Goertzen uses hers to heat a large (and occasionally drafty) sunroom in chilly Minnesota
“It gets our space warm in about ten minutes,” she says
we use it nearly every morning.” She likes that this heater
“blends with the surrounding décor,” looking right at home alongside a floor lamp and plant stand
and its temperature and oscillating fan are both adjustable
including two “quiet comfort” settings that prioritize warmth while limiting fan noise
Heating style: Infrared | Safety features: UL listed
12-hour automatic shut-off | Efficiency: 1,500 watt
which will keep your skin from drying out and add a dose of extra-cozy comfort
Heating style: Oil | Safety features: ETL-listed
My fellow Strategist writer Jeremy Rellosa has “very toasty
cozy memories” associated with this affordable oil heater that’s lighter and more compact than the DeLonghi above
When the heat in his apartment was broken for a few days
and no amount of sweaters or blankets alone could make it warm enough to focus when working from home
this Pelonis was able to warm up his Brooklyn apartment bedroom within 20 minutes
“The subtle ticking of the oil heating up is actually quite soothing.”
Heating style: Convection | Safety features: ETL listed
UL listed | Efficiency: Adjustable thermostat and airflow
We here at the Strategist love Dyson’s products. Though pricey, the brand is known for quality and innovative heating and cooling technology, from vacuum cleaners to TikTok-hyped hair styling tools to heaters like this one, which purifies the air and utilizes that iconic oscillating fan to cool things down in the summer
this heater can warm up a medium-size room with ease and minimal noise
as well as fellow Strategist senior editor Jen Trolio
have invested in a Hot + Cool and are happy with the purchase
“It heats really well,” says Trolio of hers
which she uses to heat a small home office
“There are better air purifiers out there for the cost
but for the design and the all-in-one product in a reasonably compact footprint
I like it a lot.” And a final underrated feature
is the remote that’s “nicely designed to magnetically attach to the top of the unit.”
Heating style: Propane | Safety features: Tip-switch | Efficiency: 9,000 BTUs
says it has “a nice carrying handle and can easily heat up a patio or be placed on a tabletop
It’s plenty warm if you have three or four folks around it.” The heater comes with an automatic safety shutoff function should it accidentally tip over or detect low-oxygen levels
which is great if you’re using it to work in a cold garage or heat up an RV (but be sure to ventilate the space either way)
