Beach Volleyball Association Hall of Fame honorees covered the spectrum of players who make up what emcee Jim Arico calls “The Tribe.” four FIVB Beach World Championships and seven Manhattan Beach Open championships make her the undisputed Greatest Of All Time women beach volleyball player former top ranked AVP player Casey Jennings On the other end of the spectrum was inductee Phil Stutzel the backbone of beach volleyball during his years as CBVA president.  Stutzel said friends told him to remind the audience of his contributions to the sport  “because people probably won’t know who you are.” just about every American professional beach volleyball player has qualified for the AVP (Association of Volleyball Professionals) by earning his or her AAA rating on the CBVA tour.  told the crowd at the Hermosa Beach Community Theater Saturday night and that we’re holding these inductions in this little theater Saturday night’s pre induction party was held at the Hermosa Museum which houses the CBVA Hall of Fame collection Symbolizing the heart of beach volleyball was inductee Jim Menges a dominant player through the 1970s when he earned 48 open victories Among his wins were six Hermosa Beach Opens with five different partners but honored Saturday night because because induction ceremonies didn’t begin until 2012 We didn’t play for money because there wasn’t any Matt Gage (1994 HOF) and I  got a pitcher of beer at the Poop Deck for winning the 1980 Hermosa Beach Open,” Menges said Menges’ earnings during his 12 year career totaled $16,000.  the first year the Hermosa Open was broadcast on NBC Winners Randy Stoklos (1999 HOF) and Sinjin Smith (2002 HOF) would become the first AVP players to earn over $1 million in prize money Menges won his fifth Manhattan Beach Open with Stoklos When things didn’t go well you could hear him scream into his hands ‘Jimmeeee!’ He would take it out on the water cooler next to the court And that was during mid-week practice,” Stoklos said I won’t say who they were.” But then he called out to the packed auditorium are you here?” There was a shout from the back of the auditorium you were the only one of the really good players I never lost to,” Menges said “I worked at night at the Chart House to make a little money You went to San Diego for Featherstone’s party then Corona Del Mar for Woody Brook’s party then to John Lee’s party in Santa Barbara.” But soon the intensity Stoklos talked about kicked in Menges earned the nickname “Ice Eyes’” and in 1973 set a still-unbroken record of 13 consecutive wins with partner Greg Lee Menges learned to play beach volleyball at Sorrento Beach in Santa Monica “I was 18 and had just graduated from high school I’d never seen so many good looking girls in my life We’d get there at 8:30 in the morning and play ‘til sunset and watch the sun go down You had to go to Big Five and they cost $45 You’d spin them ‘til you found one that didn’t wobble,” he said and interjected throughout his talk how much “I just love volleyball.” I get a lot of joy out of going to the beach I play a four-man game and run in the water afterwards,” he said.  CBVA Juniors title winners were recognized “I hope all you young kids get as much joy out of playing as I did,” Menges said Then he shared with them a warning a friend shared with him when he was young “The beach is the graveyard of ambition,” he said Today it has over 8,000 players and hosts over 1,000 tournaments annually and continues to serve as an assistant tournament director at the Manhattan Beach Six-Man tournament Harry,  introduced him to beach volleyball shortly after their family moved to Playa del Rey in the early 1960s His dad helped then-CBVA president Gene Popko (1992 HOF) with tournament setups and teardowns “Most people talk about movie stars and athletes as their role models do not sleep and every day try to make someone else’s day better.” and then come back with two cases of beer for the crew,” Stutzel said Stutzel said he followed his father’s example “I’ve bought players over 3,000 beers at the Shack,” he said Stutzel entered his first CBVA tournament when he was 13.  It was the greatest feeling to be accepted The players saw a 13-year-old punk with a pint of ice cream sitting by the post They were playing for their B rating and were serious ‘Are you going to eat that ice cream while you’re reffing?’ We became best friends.” The video of Stutzel shown during his inductions included a photo of two dozen river rafters standing on a rock in the Grand Canyon “You’re probably wondering why a river rafting photo taken in 2015 is in a video about beach volleyball in the ‘70 It’s because we’ve all remained friends,” Stutzel said.   Casey Jennings traced the reason he introduced his wife as a bad MF back to a night in Chicago when Kerri and partner Misty May had won that weekend’s Women’s AVP tournament and Casey had placed third in the Men’s the two won AVP tournaments on the same weekend).  While they were celebrating a man walked by with his hat pulled down low “I think that’s Michael Jordan,” Kerri said Michael Jackson smiled and gave Casey a high five Jennings said his wife deserves the epithet ‘Your wife’s had six shoulder surgeries and three kids I’d be woken up at 3 in the morning to see her doing lunges with three pound dumbbells between nursing.” Walsh-Jennings was five weeks pregnant with her third child when she and May-Treanor won gold at the 2012 London Olympics “I thought I worked hard and I was a killer But Kerri is at another level that very few get to when are we going to kick back and get fat It’s not going to happen,” her husband said Walsh-Jennings began her remarks by echoing what Menges said about beach volleyball “The thing that comes to mind when I think of Misty May and when I think of the sport is pure and I’ve given so much of myself to it I was willing to forego high school parties and college parties and AVP parties Friday nights in high school I’d play pepper in the backyard with a friend because I loved volleyball so much It’s not an adequate word for people who help you become champions until I realized that it’s impossible to be fearless beginning with introducing her to Misty May When talking about the GOAT in beach volleyball cussing like a sailor and firing a big machine gun humming ‘Itsy Bitsy Spider,’ before calmly taking out the enemy.” At the start of the evening CBVA President Chris Brown interviewed Walsh-Jennings and Dane Selznick (2003 HOF) Sezlnick coached Walsh-Jennings and May-Treanor to their 2004 Athens Olympics gold medal (The interview was recorded for distribution on the multimedia platform Ions.com.) Selznick described the teammates as complementary opposites You could see your opponents emotions in their eyes and play off them She couldn’t let the other team see they were getting to her She was the best side-out player I’ve ever seen She loved to celebrate great plays,” Selznick said Walsh-Jennings’ nickname was “Six Feet of Sunshine.” (She’s listed as 6-foot-3 but we don’t talk about it,” she quipped.) Brown thanked Walsh-Jennings for her unwavering support of the CBVA She and May-Treanor also earned their AAA rating on the CBVA tour “It was a little tournament and I swear to God it was the most stressful tournament I ever played in in my life,” the three-time Olympic gold medalist said Easy Reader News & Peninsula Magazine is your trusted source for hyperlocal news and stories from the South Bay and Palos Verdes Peninsula Stay informed—get the top local stories delivered straight to your inbox Terms of Service | Privacy Policy | Legal Notices “For years I thought I’d be a one-club girl,” Menges exclusively told The Equalizer. “But honestly, this move has been amazing for me in so many ways.” Now, just a few months in with her new team, the New York native is grateful for the new experience which has, for the first time in over a decade, gotten her out of her comfort zone.  “When I look back on the Thorns, I think at a certain point I had maybe stopped growing as quickly,” Menges explained. “I’m not sure if it was a comfort thing but I hit a plateau.” As Menges adjusts to her new life, new teammates, new facilities, and a new way of doing things, she realizes that she did everything she wanted to do at Portland. During that meeting, the sorority’s chief learning officer dismissed McNabb’s concerns about violations of her right to religious freedom and refused to answer her question about whether men who claim to be women can join the sorority finding her guilty of violating the sorority’s “Anti-Bullying Policy” and of engaging in “Moral-Prejudicial Conduct.” After The Daily Signal’s story, a Delta Zeta alumna from Texas A&M University sent Delta Zeta CEO Cindy Menges an email condemning the sorority’s apparent support for gender ideology you are quite literally telling our younger generations not to listen to their guts to their mothers and grandmothers,” the alumna wrote “You are telling our young women that it’s not OK to protect themselves!” This email elicited Menges’ response that the expulsion had nothing to do with gender ideology When The Daily Signal reached out for comment asking Menges what she claimed was misleading about the initial story Menges reiterated the sorority’s commitment to privacy “Delta Zeta is a women’s-only organization and has been a strong advocate for women and women’s-only experiences since its founding in 1902,” she said in an emailed statement we remain steadfast in that commitment and to our mission of creating lifelong values-based membership experiences for women that are anchored deeply in our six core values Delta Zeta supports its members individual advocacy efforts and recognizes the unique thoughts opinions and beliefs of its members.” Delta Zeta is committed to protecting the privacy of its active and inactive members through our membership accountability process,” Menges added we will not comment on the matter related to Payton’s membership in Delta Zeta.” Western Carolina University brought a Title IX investigation against McNabb accusing her of creating a hostile environment for women by filming a man in the women’s restroom Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 aimed to protect the rights of women in education McNabb remarked on the irony of a male wielding it against her “I kept thinking like how is a grown man going to charge a girl on Title IX charges for using the women’s restroom that doesn’t even sound real,” she said It almost sounds like a South Park episode or something The university ultimately cleared her of the Title IX accusations in January McNabb urged women to speak out against gender ideology “My message is you can win because the truth is on your side and I had all the odds against me and I still prevailed,” she told The Daily Signal “We have commonsense and reality on our side and that’s a big win.” “This has affected me in multiple parts of my life and not because I wanted it to,” McNabb explained She persisted despite a hostile environment against her I had to move back home from school,” McNabb recalled “People were trying to find where I lived.” McNabb told The Daily Signal that she tried to convince Delta Zeta to let her back into the sorority She said there is nothing the sorority could do to win her back “That’s completely off the table for me,” she replied I still have some lifelong friends in there I’ll have nothing to do with Delta Zeta.” Former Portland Thorns boss Rhian Wilkinson has been appointed the new head coach of the Wales Women’s national team The role marks Wilkinson’s return to management for the first time since resigning from Thorns in December 2022 after she was investigated and cleared over her conduct. The collective bargaining agreement, which extends the current CBA by four years, through 2030, “revolutionizes the game, raises standards, and innovates the business,” Berman added. The agreement will raise the minimum salary, set an annual salary cap and create incentive alignments for players and clubs by increasing the salary cap based on league revenues. To maximize the commercial benefit, players will be more accessible to the fans and media and the NWSL has the exclusive rights to commercialize player performance data. The salary cap has been negotiated into the CBA with two components: a base salary cap at prescribed levels and a supplement that will be determined based on the prior year’s media and sponsorship revenue. The base salary cap for the NWSL will grow from $3.3 million in 2025 to $5.1 million in 2030, with an expectation of further increases based on the revenue-sharing model, further incentivizing a collective ambition to expand NWSL revenues. There will be no limit for an individual player’s maximum annual salary, and the league minimum salary will rise from $48,500 in 2025 to $82,500 in 2030. Soccer Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian calls investing in Angel City FC an easy business decision because of the popularity of pro women’s sports. This month, Italian club AC Milan announced it will give players a one-year contract extension on the same economic terms if their contract was due to expire during the season in which they became pregnant. The club will also provide assistance with child care during sports activities and support for flights, accommodation and other travel expenses for the children of the player who carried the pregnancy or is the sole guardian. “The NWSL prioritized terms to ensure that the league can attract, develop and retain the most talented players in the world,” said Tatjana Haenni, NWSL’s chief sporting director. “Soccer is a uniquely global game with roots in every country and the new CBA allows us to offer the world’s most elite training and playing environment, giving players the ability to succeed at the top national and international competitions.” Kevin Baxter writes about soccer and hockey for the Los Angeles Times.
