Miren Arzalluz will join the museum on 1 March 2025 The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao has this week announced the appointment of Miren Arzalluz as its general director. She will succeed Juan Ignacio Vidarte, who confirmed in May that he will resign from the post after more than 30 years. Arzalluz, who has served as the director of the Paris Fashion Museum-Palais Galliera for six years, was born in Bilbao in 1978. She will join the Guggenheim on 1 March 2025, overlapping for a month with Vidarte, who will officially step down on 1 April 2025. According to the museum’s board of trustees, Arzalluz was selected due to her “proven international experience and renown in the field of cultural institutions [and] her long-term commitment to the project”. In addition, the board cited her alignment with “the museum’s mission to serve as a key driving force of the Basque Country’s transformation strategy and her sensibility toward the diverse cultural contexts where the museum is currently operating”. Vidarte, the Guggenheim’s outgoing director, has overseen one of the most extraordinary museum successes of the past 30 years. Frank Gehry’s spectacular gleaming glass-and-titanium-clad building is credited with turning a decaying port city into an international cultural tourism destination—a phenomenon that has become known internationally as the “Bilbao effect”. Last year, visitor numbers reached a record 1.3 million. Arzalluz has a master’s degree in art history from London’s Courtauld Institute of Art and another in comparative politics from the London School of Economics. She gained a PhD in history from Deusto University. Before moving to Paris, she was the director of a public institution to promote the Basque language and contemporary culture. news20 November 2023Guggenheim picks a leader from NYU Abu Dhabi as its Snow Girl (La chica de nieve) has been one of Netflix’s most successful Spanish originals reaching the Top 10 in 60 territories on its 2023 release for those of us left captivated by its shocking denouement a second helping of the Malaga-based crime has now arrived to tie up the loose ends and While child abduction was at the heart of investigative journalist Miren’s (Milena Smit) crusade last season this time around it’s a teenage crucifixion a series of survival tests and their possible link to a cold case disappearance Here’s a look at what went down in the thrilling finale The shocking fifth episode revealed that the previously mild-mannered Nacho (Hugo Welzel) was the Jigsaw-like presence behind The Soul Game a gruesome web-based test of faith and loyalty which had been responsible for killing several teenagers in the area Miren discovered this truth the hard way: being almost choked to death by Nacho’s accomplice Borja and bundled into the boot of their getaway car The finale’s opening scene shows the journalist has been taken to an abandoned warehouse and strung up to the wall in a Christ-like pose This was how poor Allison was also found dead and Nacho tells Miren she’s likely to meet the same fate on his return to the scene 24 hours later the fresh-faced psychopath reminds Borja that he was The Soul Game’s first player (a motorcycling dare which went horribly wrong is how he suffered his facial scarring) And Nacho also reminds his sidekick how he told him the truth during his recovery in hospital: that he is the ‘Raven of God’ Borja begins to suspect that his high school classmate might not be the divine presence he once believed And while trying to rid himself of responsibility for Miren’s impending demise The puppet master then pays an exhausted Miren an unplanned visit to helpfully explain his motive He actually has no strong religious beliefs himself to get revenge for the lack of media interest in his missing sister For having watched Miren play the go-getting journalist in the first season’s hunt for another disappearing young girl Nacho became enraged his sibling didn’t get the same treatment He subsequently read Miren’s best-selling book to discover her deepest darkest fears and prey upon them in retaliation including injecting her beloved old colleague Eduardo (Jose Coronado) with a lethal dose of insulin but when Nacho unhooks her while trying to wake her The pair then engage in a beachside battle to the death in the dead of the night And it looks to be game over when Nacho twice plunges a knife into his latest victim’s stomach But once again proving her apparently superhuman abilities Miren manages to summon the strength to repeatedly stab him back before the police – who'd traced their whereabouts via Borja’s phone – come to the rescue At the same time poor Miren was being tortured her colleague Jaime (Miki Esparbe) was busy uncovering the series’ other big mystery he persuades Laura’s ex-boyfriend – and formerly chief suspect – Tomas to meet up The latter had been heading to the airport to receive psychiatric care in London having been gaslit by his father Alberto (Luis Bermejo) into believing his theories about Laura were all a sign of madness when Jaime tells him his own dad was involved in her disappearance Alberto had very much been having an illicit affair with Laura behind his son’s back regularly taking her to a remote country pad known as The Green House Tomas gives Jaime the address to help determine whether there’s any truth to this bombshell Jaime is greeted by a groundsman who after a few pleasantries brandishes a shotgun and frogmarches him outside to a waiting Alberto It looks set to be curtains for the intrepid reporter but after hearing the police sirens in the distance Alberto pulls the trigger to his own head instead Jaime spots another property tucked away in the Malaga countryside she’s also still alive and with a young son in tow as well Laura explains to Jaime that after falling pregnant with his child Alberto suggested she hide out at the Green House Unwilling to jeopardise the father’s career by returning home Laura also insists she’s not suffering from a form of Stockholm Syndrome falling in love with Alberto was a sin and she wanted to spend the rest of her life repenting in solitude Having wrapped up all of its mysteries with two minutes to go And this time it’s Miren’s turn to go AWOL the reporter understandably decided to pack in all the crime-solving malarkey but has since seemingly disappeared into thin air sparking a ‘Where is Miren’ social media hashtag in the process And the plot thickens when in the final scene a bunch of armed police are seen storming a Madrid dry cleaners discover a tape labelled ‘Miren 2009.’ Let’s hope Netflix single mother of a young child I was alarmed by the high rates of drowning especially in children in my South Florida community But I didn’t view the rates as merely statistics — I saw them as preventable tragedies This set me on a mission to teach families to love swimming and become safer we are proud of our work to help significantly reduce drowning rates through high-quality water safety and swim education.  I started the business three decades ago by teaching swimming lessons in backyard home pools and eventually leased locations like country clubs and hotel pools I realized that I needed to develop a business model and operating philosophy We also needed to address the weather challenge of working solely outside because it was negatively impacting our ability to consistently teach our swimming classes.  So after 15 years of teaching in outdoor leased locations I decided that I was going to need purpose-built indoor facilities scary move that required significant capital investment but I realized that moving to indoor locations and implementing more sustainable practices could affect greater change The expansion allowed us to teach year-round which was very different in South Florida at the time It also allowed us to make a greater impact and reach more people to make children and families safer around water.  we were also able to create a more sustainable model We added a second part to our mission specifically dedicated to our team members We committed to helping them grow within a framework of social and environmental responsibility so that we could expand our school in a sustainable way and make a bigger impact in our world We realized that we could not honor our mission to our families without a strong commitment to our team members We wanted to be a workplace that cared about our people and invested in their development and personal and professional growth opportunities helping them learn the skills they need to lead in a culture that is supportive and inclusive.  We discovered that our team members really enjoy working with an organization that is making a difference in the community we teach our team members about social and environmental responsibility and how a business can be a force for good We ask our team to help us designate our charitable contributions by making donations to the charity of their choice on work anniversaries We offer paid community service time and paid time off to vote in elections We help our community and environment with all of these initiatives and are excited to continue doing them Ocaquatics underwent significant expansion indoor facilities and remained true to our mission for our families and our team members Expanding our operations required navigating financial uncertainties and building a team that shared our values and mission These challenges taught me the importance of resilience Our greatest milestones include celebrating Ocaquatics’ 30th anniversary and transitioning to a 100% employee-owned company through an employee ownership trust These achievements are not just markers of success; they are affirmations of our mission’s impact We now have 165 team members between five year-round warm-water locations where we have taught over 2.5 million lessons.  As we embrace our new identity as a 100% employee-owned company I am filled with optimism about the future This transition marks a new chapter for Ocaquatics with every employee-owner playing a pivotal role in our journey forward we are committed to deepening our impact on water safety and swim education This collaborative approach will ensure that Ocaquatics continues to thrive making a difference in every life we touch Miren Oca is founder and CEO of Ocaquatics Swim School, a 2024 pivotal moment for the institution and the cultural landscape of the Basque Country Arzalluz brings a wealth of experience as the director of the Palais Galliera Her tenure in Paris was characterized by her innovative approach to presenting fashion as a cornerstone of cultural history The Guggenheim’s board of trustees praised her international expertise and commitment to fostering cultural transformation aligning seamlessly with the museum’s mission to enhance the region’s identity and global prominence Arzalluz’s leadership arrives as the museum transitions from the visionary era of Juan Ignacio Vidarte who has helmed the institution since its inception Vidarte’s tenure saw the Guggenheim Bilbao rise from a bold architectural project by Frank Gehry into a global cultural phenomenon—the “Bilbao Effect.” This transformation elevated the city from a declining industrial hub to an iconic tourist destination and set a benchmark for how museums can catalyze urban renewal With a record-breaking attendance of 1.3 million visitors last year albeit one with evolving challenges in sustaining its relevance amid shifting cultural paradigms Arzalluz’s academic credentials—from the Courtauld Institute of Art and the London School of Economics—underscore her interdisciplinary approach to art and cultural policy Her prior work promoting the Basque language and culture hints at her ability to bridge local heritage with international discourse This dual sensibility will likely inform her leadership at the Guggenheim Bilbao as she balances its role as an emblem of global modernity with a nuanced understanding of the diverse cultural contexts it serves Arzalluz’s vision will undoubtedly shape the museum’s next chapter cementing its place as both a beacon of contemporary art and a testament to the transformative power of cultural institutions Copyright © 2025 ArteFuse.com All Rights Reserved Our website uses cookies to improve your experience. path to conservation work started with penguins in Boston But it now takes her through Africa and Southeast Asia where she helps people adapt to the hazards of climate change Schleicher, who holds a master’s degree in conservation medicine from Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, is a consultant in climate and spatial data analysis with C4 EcoSolutions She helps countries reckoning with climate change disruption such as sea level rise and increased floods and drought, by researching ecosystems-based solutions on behalf of United Nations agencies with the aim of securing funding from sources that include the Green Climate Fund and the Global Environment Facility “We are trying to make a difference in communities that are being hit the hardest by climate change in every aspect of their lives but are contributing the least to climate change,” says Schleicher The New England Aquarium was Schleicher’s favorite place to visit as a child While a student at Northeastern University she landed a co-op (internship) as a keeper in the penguin exhibit where she worked with a colony of about 60 African and rockhopper penguins “Getting to work at the aquarium was super special,” she says “and I thought that it would be what I would do for the rest of my life.”  But she was also learning more about global threats to the birds. The population of African penguins in part because the penguins’ favorite foods aren’t thriving as food availability is impacted by shifting ocean currents caused by climate change In 2015, Schleicher first traveled to South Africa through a partnership between the New England Aquarium and a seabird rescue and rehabilitation hospital called the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds When she visited a marine protected area and she spotted only five or six penguins “I saw that conservation works in the real world to protect endangered species That awakening would drive me to pursue conservation medicine at Tufts.” she would periodically return to SANCCOB as a volunteer In addition to caring for endangered African penguins In her current role working on projects in Southeast Asia and Africa, Schleicher draws on a signature perspective of Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine known as One Health which focuses on global connections between humans Schleicher also regularly uses her Cummings training in GIS—Geographic Information Systems—for mapping and analyzing data about specific locations.  In developing solutions to conserve resources that people depend on “That means really working with the communities to have some ownership over how they adapt to climate change and navigate these changes in a sustainable and meaningful way,” she says.  Schleicher describes Kenyan fishing communities faced with coastal degradation due to rising sea levels and an increase in storm intensity That intensity can destroy coastlines and the coral reefs that could help protect them from damaging waves The storms can also damage mangrove forests making it more dangerous to go fishing.  Local residents don't have access to modern boats or fishing equipment so they “are being forced to go out in dangerous conditions at risk of losing their lives,” Schleicher says Ecosystem-based adaptation measures may include restoring some of the ecosystems Selling seedlings gives people the means to transition to other work Schleicher recalls a recent visit to Djibouti where agropastoral communities are struggling to find access to water; diminished rainfall means its traditional groundwater sources are depleted Schleicher’s project aims to helps local people build new infrastructure or dig wells or boreholes powered by solar pumps To help residents continue to grow their own food Schleicher’s work requires both technical knowledge and empathy for communities facing uncertain futures "We’ve got a long road ahead of us in terms of turning around the impacts of climate change and human activities on the natural environment.” “I don't think that you could work in this field if you didn't think that what you did made a difference,” she says it's just never been an option to do nothing I would always rather participate and make my work as meaningful as possible.” Hydrologist and Tufts gradaute Jay Famiglietti is a passionate advocacy for protecting vital groundwater However, Peru only issued its first shark fin trafficking conviction in 2022 Sometimes, the vessels that are apprehended red-handed are also involved in other unsustainable and cruel practices. Our investigation refers to a US Treasury Department report that documents how a vessel went to sea with a crew of 24 in the Pacific Ocean the vessel engaged in illegal shark finning After 13 months at sea without a port visit including 18-hour work days and being fed on out-of-date food and brown desalinated water and three of their bodies were dumped at sea the surviving crew were malnourished and paid just a fraction of the promised wages They also reported deceptive recruiting and confiscated documents The investigation found similar abuses across the fleet the company received US$8 million (£6.3 million) annually in fishing subsidies from China Some vessels have been found to be participating in the “saiko” system – this involves illegally transferring fish at sea from industrial trawlers to local canoes in Ghana. The saiko trade is a barter system whereby unwanted catch of industrial fishing vessels would be exchanged at sea for food and livestock brought by canoes industrial vessels target species for the saiko trade distorting the local markets and industry and facilitating juvenile fish trade We wonder why would these countries continue allowing companies like that to operate in their waters when it results in economic loss of opportunity for sustainable fishing by small vessels and local fishers Our team compiled knowledge on fisheries from various sources from maps and satellite data to confirm a vessel’s route to information about the capacity We also trained deep-learning algorithms to identify fishing practices such as trawling or long-lining which are not inherently bad if performed legally and responsibly but can be linked to unsustainable practice The report highlights the real scale of domestic and foreign fleets operating in these waters our map analysis and satellite data showed that the biggest fleets in these five countries’ waters are not their own domestic fleets but Ghana (33) and the Philippines (25) are lagging behind so other countries’ fleets are more prominent in the number of vessels that domestic fleets Our analysis highlights that the domestic fleets of these developing nations include vessels from big fishing nations that have changed their flag to falsely imply they are from a local port A total of 192 vessels were found to be connected to Chinese interests but flagged to other countries This “reflagging” to incorporate foreign vessels into domestic fleets raises questions encourage the excess of sustainable catch limits and threaten food security and livelihoods We found that vessels’ fishing operations in these waters show intense competition between domestic and foreign fleets of the same fishing type Foreign industrial vessels’ technical capacity to fish non-stop and travel to remote areas often awards them a competitive advantage over domestic fleets which include thousands of artisanal fishing vessels Effective policies hinge on transparency and understanding illicit or unsustainable practices and our report fills a crucial knowledge gap By expressing the impacts of allowing industrial fishing vessels to operate in domestic waters in terms of financial loss and direct human impacts the need for greater Click Here What happens when you renege on a deal with a monster Miren O’Malley is the last daughter of true O’Malley lineage The family used to be mighty and successful but that luck (is it just luck?) has dwindled as surely as their bloodline has There have always been rumors about how the O’Malleys managed to be so rich and successful for so long but the truth has been kept strictly secret This is where All the Murmuring Bones starts Miren’s grandmother is the matriarch of the O’Malleys and is desperate to regain some of their lost glory they are not the only wild and savage creatures of legend that make an appearance and more give All the Murmuring Bones a dark mythical feel that drew me in There is no boundary she is unwilling to cross to keep her life and her freedom Her flight to safety turns into a quest for answers and the switch is fascinating and brilliant I’m used to gothic novels sticking to a single setting Miren’s travels allow the world and plot to open up magnificently I did feel there was a misstep here and there the ending wraps everything up in a neat little bow that feels a little out of place considering the path the rest of the book takes I would have liked seeing parts of the story left the climactic event was over sooner than I was hoping these are small complaints in the grand scheme of things and the rest of the book is really stinking good All the Murmuring Bones is a gothic novel that hits all the right points Read on Amazon Get the inside scoop on everything dark fantasy Join our mailing list to turn your inbox into a grimbox © Grimdark Magazine 2025   |   Built with ♥ by Acid Media CIRM is pleased to welcome Miren Azkarate as visiting scholar Miren Azkarate is invited as part of the Etxepare Euskal Institutua Elbira-Zipitria Chair in Basque Studies Etxepare Euskal Institutua and McGill University Euskal Herria (the Basque country) is distinguished by its language culture and history; the Chair proposes to parallel Quebec and Basque perspectives on language teaching Azkarate has been an honorary collaborator of the University of the Basque Country since January 2023 after a career as a professor of philology at the same university Azkarate is a specialist in issues relating to language planning She has focused on the case of Basque and the strategies actions and projects needed to promote the use of Basque in schools public institutions and among new arrivals in urban areas She was also Minister of Culture in the Basque government from 2001 to 2009 CIRM contacted Miren Azkarate by e-mail and asked her a few questions The Elbira Zipitria chair brings me to CRIEM-CIRM was created within the framework of the group of chairs promoted by the Etxepare Institute supports research on Euskara and Basque culture through Basque studies chairs created at leading universities around the world The Elbira Zipitria chair is the last of them pioneer and promoter of teaching in Basque innovative schoolteacher and creator of the Basque language ‘ikastola’ system the chair will focus on Basque culture and cultural innovation the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Engineering at McGill University have been working with the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research on Montréal (CIRM) since 2022 to promote the Basque language in education and society placing innovative cultural movements at the centre I have the privilege of being the first visiting professor of the chair You study the language policy carried out in the Basque Country; how does it compare to the linguistic situation in Québec and in Montréal do you have an example where the issues are similar and one where they are different I would say that societies in which there is a minority language always share similar challenges They need a clear commitment from society to recover the language and a clear commitment from political leaders to enact laws and decrees to make effective (carry out) what Fishman called the Reversing Language Shift This is the first major similarity between Québec and the Basque Country We both started from a situation where French and Basque are minorities and we are implementing policies to enable citizens to use their respective languages in all areas of daily life we have both seen the situation of French and Basque change; in both cases Education has played and continues to play a central role But there is no doubt that there are also major differences between Québec and the Basque Country with no known relatives among the languages of the world which means that there is a great linguistic distance between Spanish or French and Basque the Charte de la langue française establishes that French is the official language of Québec while in the Basque Country we have two official languages: Spanish and Basque French is the mother tongue of 79.6% of the population and according to Leimgruber (2019) "bilingualism is becoming more and more of a defining feature of anglophone Quebecers." In our country only 36% of the population is bilingual and Spanish is the mother tongue of 75% of the population but I believe that the data I have given are sufficient to show the major differences between Québec and the Basque Country What are the current issues regarding the language activist groups in the Basque Country Many of us think that the Basque language is in a croos road It needs to make decisive progress in schools well organized nowadays and collaborating side by side with public institutions in the promotion of the Basque language Among the language activist groups I would like to highlight on the one hand the Euskalgintzaren Kontseilua (Council of language activists) brings together the main organisations and social entities working in favour of the normalisation of the Basque language It is made up of more than 30 associations which by taking advantage of their combined strength aim to influence language policies in order to speed up the process to normalise Basque Euskaltzaleen Topagunea (Meeting point for bascophiles) a social movement committed to building a community that wants to live in Basque which is formed by a group of associations citizens and workers committed to the Basque language and the euskaldun (Basque-speaking) community in the framework of a conference organized by the Viceconsejería de Política Lingüística (the Vice-Ministry of Language Policy) two very important documents were presented Social consensus to influence language policies Theory of Change to make a leap in the use of Basque Both document have striking similarities and coincidences and are perfectly aligned with the analysis of "Weaknesses Strengths and Opportunities of the Basque language today" carried out by the Vice-Ministry of Language Policy How do you think CRIEM-CIRM will help you in your research Our Basque Standardization Act (1982) is clearly inspired by the Charte de la langue française de Québec I would say that the rights of citizens and the obligations of the public authorities in relation to the Basque language included in the Law for the normalization of the use of the Basque language (1982) are based on the Fundamental language rights set forth in the Charte de la langue française in the 1980s and 1990s we had a constant relationship with Quebecois sociolinguists such as William Mackey or Richard Bourhis who were indispensable advisors for both Basques and Catalans Professor Bourhis remembers very well how he participated in the elaboration of our first plan for the Revitalization of the Basque Language That is why I know that we can now also learn from the language policies implemented in Québec Because today we also share similar problems; among others the question of immigration (how to carry out inclusive intercultural policies); the great attraction of English or Spanish among young people which leads them to leave aside French or Basque; or to use a variety plagued by Anglicisms or Spanishisms.. Spanish is ‘cool’ for many Basque teenagers; English is probably also ‘cool’ for many Québec teenagers even today we have issues on which to exchange experiences issues on which we can learn a great deal from Québec Is there an event or venue in Montréal that you have heard about and cannot wait to visit I've been wanting to see the fall colors for years At last I will have the opportunity to see all those shades of red I read on the internet that “the fall foliage season in Montréal typically starts in late September and peaks by mid-October” last year I had the opportunity to spend five days in Montréal Now I can't wait to show my husband the wonderful city that is Montréal: Old Montréal and Old Port Azkarate for a lunchtime talk on September 22 at 11:30 am The title of this lunchtime talk is "Rôles des universités et des villes pour la valorisation l’apprentissage et l’usage des langues en contexte minoritaire Les exemples de l’Euskara à Donostia-San Sebastián et de la langue française à Montréal" Please note the event will be held in French Azkarate's address will be Noémie Dansereau-Lavoie (Commissioner of the French language Manon Gadbois (Faculty of Continuing Education Annie Desnoyers (Faculty of Education Sciences and Marie-Cécile Guillot (Associate Professor and Language Teacher in French as a second language The luncheon is organized in partnership with McGill's Centre d'enseignement du français (CEF) The event is open to all and free of charge send an assunta.fiorita [at] mcgill.ca (subject: Lunchtime%20talk%20with%20Miren%20Azkarate%20%2F%20September%2022nd) (e-mail to Assunta Fiorita at CRIEM) CIRM is located on the 8th floor of 680 Sherbrooke Street West Newport Beach-based IHP Capital Partners and Vancouver-based Intracorp Homes have teamed up to build new homes in Arcadia Late last month, the two companies announced the formation of a joint venture to acquire a 2.9-acre property located at 2607 S which will be developed into a 33-home project called Miren Each new house will stand two stories in height and sit on 2,500-square-foot lots with three- and four-bedroom floor plans ranging from 1,820 to 2,120 square feet Home sales are expected to commence in the second quarter of 2023 IHP and Intracorp, both of which have experience building for-sale housing in Southern California, are not the first firms to target this part of Arcadia.
