got a damaged tooth covered in gold at a nearby dentist
would melt it down for her own dying tooth and film the process
Marija Kobale (Mica for short) decided to visit the dentist in a nearby town and encase a damaged tooth in a golden veneer
she couldn't say exactly what was wrong with the tooth, where the dentist was based
or how much it cost – but what’s certain is that the tooth remained with her until 2013
when it was removed and replaced by an artificial set. Sixty years later
thinking she might melt it down and use the gold for something useful. What she couldn’t have predicted was that her granddaughter, Lucija Rosc, would take the tooth in question, turn it into a gold coating for her own dying tooth
The tooth began its journey as a fashionable accessory
coolness solidified in the general atmosphere of 1960s Yugoslavia
And Mica would certainly fit the vibe – one of the archival photographs that Lucija used in the past shows a young Mica on a motorcycle
smiling broadly at someone we cannot see
It’s not difficult to imagine her character
especially if we’re familiar with Lucija’s work
In her project Mica Reads Jokes (2023)
the photographer produced a vinyl record of her grandmother’s collection of jokes
some of them quite raunchy – and made funnier by the fact that it’s Mica’s voice reading them for us. She used to keep a little notebook to collect the jokes and write down her favourites
pulling it out during a quiet moment at family gatherings and testing the jokes on her relatives.
who dedicated several exhibitions (Superpositions, Škuc gallery
2022; Podmet, Miklova hiša gallery
2023) to her relationship with her grandparents, has now chosen to continue exploring the topic and dedicate a project solely to her grandmother. The artist is once again dealing with topics of family dynamics and memory, and still uses photography as her preferred medium
But the real focus of the exhibition is a performative documentary film about the tooth’s journey from Mica to Lucija; its transfer is a gesture of passing down an heirloom, and the tooth becomes a totem of sorts. After all
Lucija used the gold to cure her own dying tooth (fifth bottom left) in a symbolic gesture of succession
The film oscillates between archival footage of Lucija’s childhood, iPhone-filmed excerpts of her conversations with Mica dated from 2016 to today
and the process of her tooth replacement. We see Mica lost in thought, lovingly forcing her granddaughter to take homefood
and aimlessly tidying up the apartment. There is a scene of Mica looking for her missing slipper
engaging everyone present in the hunt. These scenes show us how Mica is seen by her granddaughter
but they also possessa certain universality
almost as if we were rewatching our own memories. The footage also speaks of Lucija’s artistic practice
which is based on the fictionalisation of personal memory
but always managing to imbue her narratives with a sense of humour and induced nostalgia
casts of Lucija’s teeth and Mica’s gold tooth, and documentation of the dental work are all part of the story
where mundane objects are turned into important pieces of the puzzle
presented as almost sacred objects. The project is both playful and vulnerable
with the artist letting us in on the otherwise private and intimate part of her life. The tooth serves as a metaphor for remembrance
with the artist asking whether it is possible to solidify a cherished memory
by literally implanting it in one’s body. The project is definitely a homage to her grandmother and a celebration of her character, yet on a more sombre note
it also deals with the fear of losing a loved one and the question of what will remain once they are gone – and how one can carry their legacy into the future.
Lucija's main focus is a performative documentary film that chronicles the tooth’s journey from Mica to herself

2024," Lucija explores the theme of 'babiščina' or 'heirloom' through the tooth as a metaphor for remembrance
She questions whether a cherished memory can be solidified by implanting it in one's body
The project is a heartfelt homage to her grandmother
addressing the fear of losing a loved one and reflecting on how to carry their legacy into the future
2024" is a site-specific installation showcasing photographs of Lucija's grandmother's golden tooth
It includes images from family albums and her grandparents' collections
This piece serves as both a tribute and an archive
bringing together all the "evidence" of her grandmother's golden tooth and highlighting its significance in their shared history
Lucija discovered two pictures of Mica from 1965
The left photo had been torn and “retouched,” attempting to either remove or conceal her golden tooth
Mica explained that she had to send the left picture for a bureaucratic task or job-related matter and preferred that the recipient not see her gold tooth
Mica is posing at the highest peak in Slovenia
which stands at an elevation of 2,863 meters above sea level
The photograph captures her in a moment of triumph
surrounded by breathtaking views of the alpine landscape
The photo was taken just after Lucija had her grandmother's melted golden veneer installed in her mouth
The image captures the moment when a piece of family history became part of her
adding a quiet touch of significance to her expression

The installation consists of a wooden structure supporting three differently shaped pieces of styrofoam
Each piece displays a unique position of Lucija's grandmother's optically scanned dental veneer

The installation features plaster models of Lucija's upper and lower dental arches
with a clear indication of where a golden tooth was later installed
This specific tooth is removable and serves as a mold
emphasizing the practical aspect of the dental installation while inviting viewers to engage with the physicality of the artwork

The Prime Minister said that permanent solutions should be sought for substitute buildings

Prime Minister Robert Golob and the Minister of the Economy

where the homes of many families were damaged or destroyed in the recent floods
“It will not help if production resumes in a month with new machinery unless measures are taken to prevent such a disaster repeating in two months
And it will not help to launch economic activities and put in place flood protection if we do not help the people who have been left homeless or whose homes are flooded today
We need to tackle all three segments in a coordinated and simultaneous manner
And we can only tackle them together,” concluded Prime Minister Robert Golob

one of Slovenia's best known carnival cities began its festivities early
The traditional 65th Kurentovanje festival started on Candlemas with the Kurent's Jump when people dressed in Kurents
scary sheepskin figures with huge cow bells
Ptuj already had its first procession of traditional costumes on Saturday and it will host the traditional gathering of Kurents and Korants from around the country on Wednesday
Another procession will be held on Saturday
as well as festivities for children and a night-time spectacle
Throughout the week visitors will be able to meet the traditional carnival figures
who will be spending their evenings in the city centre
The main international carnival procession in Ptuj
In Cerknica an exhibition on carnival is opening on Tuesday
while on Thursday Butalci - slow-witted characters meant as a caricature of Slovenians - will take over control of the city
The highlight of the week will be the procession on Sunday
starting as always "exactly some time around 12:32"
featuring local figures Uršula the Witch and Jezerko the Dragon
Pust in Cerknica will be buried on 5 March after being burned on the bridge
"They say that they have been burning Pust on the bridge since the dawn of time
but the custom remains," the organisers said
In Cerkno too the main carnival procession will take place on Sunday
inviting visitors to come "so the turnip will be fatter"
The best known carnival figures in Cerkno are the family of Laufarji or "runners" - 25 figures with 26 masks made of linden wood
Ljubljana will host the Dragon's Festival on Saturday with the main procession led by a dragon figure and schoolchildren dressed in costumes of fairytale heroes
Carnival processions and other festivities will be held in other towns as well
including in Mozirje where carnival festivities date back to 1891
The procession in Ilirska Bistrica will feature Škoromati
perhaps Slovenia's oldest carnival figures that were first mentioned in 1340

Inspired by reading the Sunny Side of the Alps
which chronicles Roy Clark and his wife Justi’s move from Scotland to Slovenia
we headed off in our campervan to discover this country of soaring mountains
Slovenia is best known for picturesque Lake Bled and incredible hiking in the jagged Julian Alps
as well as the vast cave systems in the Karst region
it packs a punch as an exciting destination and is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts
Our trip included three campsites in Slovenia: Camping Bled
Camping Pivka Jama and Forest Camping Mozirje with a one-night stopover in Strasbourg at Camping de Strasbourg to break the journey
Camping de Strasbourg proved to be a perfect enroute choice; easy to reach from the motorway and ideally placed to visit the Alsace medieval city by bike or public transport
Waterways encircle the streets of gabled half-timbered houses straight out of a storybook
and the gothic medieval cathedral is an iconic landmark not to be missed
We made sure there was time to have a dip in the heated campsite pool
Then planned an early start for the big drive across Germany and Austria the next day to reach our first Slovenia destination of Lake Bled
driving along the southern edge of Lake Bled in glorious late evening sunshine
with views across to the lake’s iconic Island
Five-star Camping Bled had it all—a perfect combination of excellent facilities and an ideal location on the shores of Lake Bled
with a great range of pitch options from standard to super premium
It was huge and featured a wood-fired jacuzzi and a wooden terrace overlooking the campsite below—perfect for relaxing and feeling like a VIP
We visited historic Bled Castle perched high above the lake and took a stand-up paddleboard tour around Bled Island
We also indulged in a traditional Bled cake at the elegant Belvedere Café
once the summer residence of the Communist President of Yugoslavia - General Tito
From the terrace is a perfectly framed view of the Island and the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Away from the lake our ‘must sees’ were; the Vintgar Gorge
The 1,600 metre-long Vintgar Gorge made a spectacular walk along the galleries beside the crystal-clear Radovna River
A surprise was the beautiful walk back along the “King of Triglav” path
with its far-reaching views over the valley to Bled Castle
and took the Vogel cable car for breathtaking panoramic views of the lake and Alps
On our hike to the summit of Sija we rang the wishing bell
in the hope it would grant us a return visit to Slovenia
Not to be missed - Zipline Dolinka – was simply amazing
This zipline adventure took us across the Dolinka River on seven ziplines totalling 4 km
It was an exhilarating way to take in the valley’s natural beauty and a thrilling highlight of the trip for all of us
It made an unforgettable last day before we moved to our next base at Camping Pivka Jama to explore a completely different landscape
Pivka Jama is a low-key campsite set in the forest above the town of Postojna
A short drive from the campsite took us to Postojna Cave
which features an underground train to a magical subterranean world of huge caverns
There is a joint ticket with the nearby 800-year-old Predjama Castle
a fortress built in a cliff with its own secret cave system
The planina of Slovenia are high mountain pasture areas where herdsmen take their cattle in summer to graze
A day hiking through this unique landscape was on our must do list
gave us the opportunity to visit Velika Planina
boasting some of Slovenia’s best-preserved traditional herdsmen’s settlements set against a backdrop of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps
Reached by Cable car and chair lift from the valley floor
our day wandering through the magical landscape of wild flower meadows
spruce-shingled wooden huts and cattle herds was delightful
Forest Camping Mozirje was our base to discover a lesser-visited area of Slovenia
There was a warm welcome from our hosts at Forest Camping Mozirje with slivovka (plum brandy) or ice cream
which added a nice personal touch to our stay
the eco-friendly campsite is a destination in itself
encouraging visitors to enjoy nature—whether relaxing with a book in the hammocks or tubing on the river
Fire pits are dotted around for evening chats with your neighbours
and children are encouraged to play games on the football/basketball pitch in the centre of the campsite
It was a 40-minute drive up into the mountains to Logarska Dolina
It was a place to breathe in the beauty of nature in the magnificent valley and take time to admire the spectacular views
followed by a refreshing drink at the perilous bar
We couldn’t miss the charming capital city
It’s centrally located and makes a convenient stop off in between campsites or in our case
The Dolgi Most park-and-ride offers convenient motorhome parking
with a bus or cycle path leading to the city centre
Ljubljana's blend of historic charm and vibrant café culture made it an enjoyable stop on our journey
and an excuse to sample another traditional cake
Slovenia exceeded all our expectations with its magnificent mountain scenery
crystal clear rivers and outdoor adventures
Its compact size enabled us to explore so much within a two-week visit
from the enchanting Lake Bled to the awe-inspiring mountains and caves
One thing is certain - we will definitely be back to the Sunny Side of the Alps
