European indoor silver medallist Adrianna Sulek-Schubert and Germany’s Felix Wolter lead the entries for the Wiesław Czapiewski Memorial – a World Athletics Combined Events Tour Gold meeting – in the Polish town of Naklo nad Notecia this weekend (31 August – 1 September)
won the inaugural edition of this meeting in 2022 with 6290 – which remains the meeting record – and then went on to finish fourth at the World Championships that year in a Polish record of 6672
At the start of 2023 she finished second at the European Indoor Championships with 5014 – a mark that exceeded the previous world indoor record
but was bettered on the day by gold medallist Nafi Thiam’s 5055 world record
Sulek-Schubert cut her 2023 season short when she discovered she was pregnant
She gave birth in February 2024 and returned to competition just four months later
scoring 6033 in her first heptathlon since childbirth
She went on to place 12th at the Olympic Games in Paris with a season’s best of 6226
The 25-year-old will now look to cap her season in winning ways and will start as the favourite in the heptathlon
Two other women in the field – Ukraine’s Yuliya Loban and Poland’s Edyta Bielska – have PBs in excess of 6000 points
the World University Games silver medallist
finished sixth at the World Indoor Championships earlier this year
but is yet to complete an outdoor heptathlon this year
started her outdoor campaign with a PB of 5996 and she would dearly love to end the season as a member of the 6000-point club
Seven men with PBs in excess of 8000 points will line up for the decathlon in Naklo nad Notecia this weekend
who finished second in Ratingen in June with a season’s best of 8226
and he’ll have one eye on the meeting record of 8041
But so too will the likes of Lithuania’s Edgaras Benkunskas and Czechia’s Vilem Strasky
both of whom have bettered 8000 this season
Estonian duo Risto Lillemets and Taavi Tsernjavski should also put up a good fight

“A lot of emotions and words can be felt after today’s match,” coach Boomer Saia said. “Even with severe cramping, (Thasaporn) stayed and fought, when many would have yielded mid-match. In sports, there are a lot of situations that define the character of a player.
"The way she handled herself in the most difficult of situations, tells me everything I need to know about her."

The 19-year-old, who lost her father in a car accident last week, had to remain mentally tough to stay in the tournament in order to realise his dream of her winning the title.
“This victory is for my dad,” a tearful Thasaporn said. “I had to have a strong will this week to try and achieve this for him. It would be my last present for him,” added the emotional Thasaporn, who fought back from a set down to beat her more experienced rival 3-6 6-2 6-0 in the women’s final.
On Wednesday, her father Somchai, 52, died in a road accident when he was driving back to Bangkok after meeting his daughter in Hua Hin.
Instead of withdrawing from the competition, the teenager had to summon all her reserves of courage and concentration to stay in the tournament, believing this would be the path her father would have wanted her to pursue. She had to go back and forth between Hua Hin and Bangkok (198km) every day in order to attend the funeral and also stay in the tournament.
Even runner-up Kamonwan could not hold back tears during the award presentation.
“If this had happened to me, I don’t think I could have carried on the way she did,” she said.
Apart from the Bt55,000 prize money, Thasaporn also received a special scholarship of Bt50,000 from the Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand honorary president Suwat Liptapanlop.
Thasaporn is currently studying in the US. She returned to Thailand for a pre-season training and is scheduled to go back soon.
In the men's singles final showdown, Pruchya Isaro finally won at this venue after he settled score with Palaphoom Kovapitukted with a straight set victory 7-5 6-0. The 25-year-old from Songkhla had lost two finals in the previous legs including a defeat to Palaphoom in the openening circuit in early November. He also lost to Palaphoom in three sets in the round-robin stage earlier this week.
Pruchya who won the Bt52,000 prize money for his victory has bagged two singles title this season. His previous occured last month in the Singha TATP Tour in Nonthaburi.

led by the European Industrial Hemp Association (EIHA)
have re-affirmed that the hemp plant and its downstream products are not subject to international drug rules while also urging that the maximum THC level to distinguish hemp from marijuana be raised to a full 1.0%
In an 18-page updated “Common position of the Industrial Hemp sector on the Single Convention and the International Drug Control System,” the groups called for “clarification
and a transparent debate on international law and regulations related to hemp,” noting “current market barriers and challenges for a flourishing hemp sector originate in one particular interpretation of the international law to which regulations on food and cosmetics make reference.”
“Anyone who reads our rationale without prejudice will see that industrial hemp is a valuable and multi-purpose agricultural plant,” said Lorenza Romanese
“Having a botanical link to drug cannabis cannot and must not sentence an entire hemp industry to death
I can only urge authorities to read our position paper and take action.”
The common position paper addresses issues critical to the development of the global hemp industry at a time when important decisions affecting hemp are imminent in the United States and Europe
and comes ahead of a United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) vote that could decide specific medical CBD-related issues in December
“Cannabidiol Enforcement Policy Draft Guidance” from the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) is moving through the process that will lead to regulations
could address a range of issues such as marketing claims
serving sizes and quality standards for foods
food supplements and beverages as well as health & beauty products that contain or are based on CBD
The current situation is even more critical in Europe, where the European Commission (EC) recently issued a surprising “preliminary conclusion” that non-medical natural hemp extracts should be considered narcotics in the European Union
Stakeholders have said that relegating such hemp extracts to narcotics status would halt the dynamic growth of the companies that make products containing CBD extracted by traditional methods – producers of food and food supplements
The global hemp position paper released this week underscores that hemp and products derived from hemp are clearly and explicitly not subject to international drug controls under United Nations drug treaties nor in supplementary protocols
Industrial hemp has never been listed in UN narcotics schedules
and is clearly exempt from international drug rules based on articles in the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs
The exemption extends to the use of drugs in industrial
as long as the flowering and fruit-bearing tops of the plant are not used to obtain medicines
they are not covered by the provisions of the Single Convention – which regulates only the medical sector
undermine an agricultural sector already subject to an important set of rulings and oppose the global trend of simplifying hemp-related laws in support to a non-problematic and constantly expanding hemp industry,” the paper points out
“It is time that our industry can finally grow
produce and sell according to internationally valid regulations – without constantly encountering new and major obstacles,” said Daniel Kruse
“Our line of arguments is clear: the cultivation of all parts of the hemp plant for industrial purposes is legal
The Single Convention only deals with the illicit farming and trafficking of high-THC cannabis and cannabis resin
not with low-THC cannabis used for commercial purposes”
The groups’ recommendation for acceptable maximum THC limits of a full 1.0% comes as more and more countries are setting national limits at that level
going beyond the generally accepted arbitrary barrier of 0.3% which is predominant internationally; most European nations follow an even stricter 0.2% THC limit
A reset would replace a THC standard set out in the 1970s by the International Association for Plant Taxonomy (IAPT)
based on analysis of North American plant scientists Ernest Small and Arthur Cronquist
Their work for the IAPT set 0.3% THC (dry weight of flowers) as the line between Cannabis sativa (non-drug cannabis – “industrial hemp”) and Cannabis indica (drug cannabis – “marijuana”)
Hemp plants with higher levels of THC generally contain higher levels of cannabinoids and therefore the level of CBD can increase also
Nations observing the 1.0% standard therefore have a market advantage in that specific product category over those where the limits are lower
The 0.3% THC limit also causes headaches for growers and producers
who run the risk of their plants going beyond the threshold
many times leading to destroyed crops and financial losses
Uruguay, Ecuador, South Africa, Malawi and Thailand are among hemp-producing countries around the world who have set THC levels for hemp at a full 1.0%; some states in Australia also operate under that limit
Poland’s Agriculture Ministry has called for raising the limit to 1.0% while non-EU member Switzerland has an established and proven 1.0% barrier
which can serve as guidance for countries all over the world that are in the process of developing hemp policies and programs:
signatories to the common position are: The U.S
National Hemp Association; British Hemp Alliance; Canadian Hemp Trade Alliance; Latin-American Industrial Hemp Association; Australian Hemp Council; New Zealand Hemp Industries Association; Asia-Pacific CBD Union; Hokkaido Industrial Hemp Association (Japan); Mongolian Hemp Association
Before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the bed and breakfast at the Palace of Nakło in rural Poland was full of tourists seeking the quiet comfort of 200-year-old trees and small village life.
the rooms are home to Ukrainian mothers and their children fleeing the Russian tanks rolling through their country
while men ages 18-60 remain to fight.
Former Detroit journalist Kehrt Reyher and his wife
own the 18th-century palace and 20-acre estate
After Russian President Putin announced the invasion of Ukraine in the early morning hours of Feb
"everything has been kind of a blur" for the Reyhers.
Kehrt Reyher remembers sitting at the kitchen table with his wife
"There are going to be people coming out (of Ukraine) and we've got to do something."
the Reyhers have opened their doors to Ukrainians fleeing the war
The couple has worked with local officials and volunteers in the village to receive 14 refugees arriving in the town of Nakło from the Ukraine-Poland border.
Some Ukrainians pass through quickly before continuing on their journey to other parts of Poland and Europe
like seven of the first 10 refugees that stayed with them.
Others are here to stay for who knows how long
the Reyhers are hosting three mothers with four children between them — one just 7 months old — from the city of Kolomyia in Ukraine
One woman has a hip injury but was unable to receive the necessary surgery before the war began.
so we consider that they're here for as long as they need to be," Reyher said.
Latest news on Ukraine: NATO nations can send jets to Ukraine; ban on imports of Russian oil bein discussed: Live updates
The Reyhers met at Wayne State University in 1989
He was working as a business editor for The Detroit News and she had just arrived at the U.S
after two years as a Polish refugee living in Germany fleeing the communist regime of her home country.
Kehrt fell in love with Poland on a reporting trip
so together the Reyhers got jobs with a Polish newspaper and moved from Michigan to Poland.
For the last 30 years, they have dabbled in many businesses. From 1993 to 2011 they ran a marketing business during the period of rapid economic growth in Poland after it ditched communism in favor of a market economy
In 2002, they purchased the Palace of Nakło, which was in a dilapidated state after decades of abandonment. Renovations began in 2004 and a foundation to support the restoration was established shortly thereafter. The Reyhers moved to the property in 2011 and opened the doors of the bed and breakfast in 2012.
Since 2015, they've also been involved in the hemp industry, producing hemp on the estate grounds, running a hemp trade magazine, and creating a private initiative to aid in the economic expansion of rural Polish villages through low-level hemp processing
"There's always a lot going on," Marzenna Reyher said.
In the eight years since the first Russian invasion in Ukraine, over 1 million Ukrainians traveled to Poland looking for work in a country that shares a border and similar culture.
because we speak similar language and we were very enthusiastic about the reforms the country took," Marzenna Reyher said
Now, the number of Ukrainians in Poland has nearly doubled, with nearly 900,000 Ukrainian refugees arriving since Feb
"The drama that you see on television came to our door," Reyher said
"It was absolutely natural to us to open the door and welcome anybody
and as many people as we could host."
She worries most about the physiological burden this trauma places on young people
safe home as easily as the young children.
She was a refugee in the 1980s after leaving Poland with her brother once martial law was lifted — the country's first step toward integration with the rest of Europe
With the help of family friends in West Germany
she remembers carrying guilt and worry for her parents back in Poland.
"We always have a guilt when we leave a country that is under oppression," Reyher said
"I can imagine that a lot of people who leave their country also feel that sort of guilt."
it's still better for the mothers and children to escape Ukraine
so they are not killed by the "monster," her name for President Vladimir Putin.
"I'm very happy the world is coming together and giving Ukrainians who are running away the possibility to settle wherever they want," Reyher said
and wannabe-czar — someone that has always given her a bad feeling.
"I'm afraid you have to you have had previous experiences to really understand his mind," Reyher said.
she said she's more "angry than sorry" at Putin's aggression than the woes of the war
She doesn't think highly of Putin's stamina for war. Among her friends
Putin is called a "paper tiger" that they think will run at the first sign of push back.
"The popular opinion among Poles is that if NATO decided to go for him now
he will be back in Moscow in two days," Reyher said
But she said she's disillusioned with the west's lack of escalation
wishing NATO allies would institute no-fly zones
she's not worried about Russian troops invading Poland
"I think he faces in Ukraine a really long war," Reyher said
he won't be able to take over this very brave nation
But we don't want the nation to bleed for 10 years."
Meals at the Palace of Nakło have settled into a new normal
converse together in a mixture of five languages: Polish
Kehrt Reyher said the women from Ukraine try to maintain a positive outlook
You just want to be with them and try to help make their time is as normal as you can."
Part of establishing a new normalcy is medical care and education
Hosts across the village are arranging Polish lessons for the Ukrainian children
Once the Ukrainians register for official refugee status
which cannot come soon enough for the woman staying with the Reyhers who needs hip surgery
Marzenna Reyher knows the small things are just as important
A haircut or donated clothing in good condition can help give a person dignity in their new home
"You have to start to care for individual people
for all their needs," Reyher said. "You want the people to feel dignity ..
So, we are trying to sort of build this new environment that is not only friendly but also a partnership."
Reyher credits grassroots networking for the rapid placement of Ukrainian refugees in homes across Nakło
She said the local governments and individual citizens reacted quickly
much faster than official state help.
For people wishing to help Ukrainians from their homes around the world, Reyher said small donations to local foundations, like their Nakło Foundation
go a long way in supporting refugees and their hosts.

More: Supporters of Ukraine rallied Thursday afternoon at Gullen Mall at Wayne State University.
Reyher said local officials across the world need to feel the pressure from their constituents to help Ukraine
And everyday people can make small sacrifices
in response to the high prices that accompany the economic sanctions on Russia.
they want the world to recognize the war in Ukraine is important
because this is war on everybody," Reyher said.

after having won the Doubles title with my Russian partner Ekaterina Yashina then
Would like to congratulate the Tournament organiser
NMSA staff for the successful conduct of the tournament
Having known my opponent (Thasaporn Naklo) who incidentally is a very good friend too since juniors
we were playing for the first time against each other at the Pro level and that too in a final
which I believe was a closely contested one
The consistency of winning crucial points in the game proved to be the difference between two of us”
Playing after a gap of nine months after recovering from wrist injury suffered way back in 2023

Happy to sign off 2024 with my third Single ITF title after having won the two W15 events in Hong Kong and Xiamen in June and August early this year

“The Navi Mumbai Open ITF W50 Championship
offering a total prize money of USD 40K has completed 11 years of existence and is being held to provide opportunities for talented players across the world to make a mark at the global stage
Tournaments like these play a key role in uniting the world
which unfortunately is being dragged towards third World War due to unrest in the Middle East and Europe This time the annual tournament witnessed participation from 57 players from 15 countries across the world including 30 from India itself
The absence of many European players due to security concerns however was felt here too
Congratulations to Priska Nugroho coming up trumps in the Women Singles final and Thasaporn Naklo being a worthy runner’s up,” said Chief Guest Ganesh Naik

Michalina Kosicka celebrated her 100th birthday
known for her cheerful spirit and love of life
marked the occasion on April 14 surrounded by her loved ones
who presented her with the Marshal’s Unitas Durat Palatinatus Cuiaviano-Pomeraniensis medal
May each day bring them joy and be filled with love and support,” said Marshal Piotr Całbecki
Her childhood was a time of simplicity and togetherness
The war years left a deep mark on her life: displacement
Michalina became involved in community work – she was active in the scouting movement and the Polish Red Cross
she not only raised four children but also helped her neighbors
who had spent five years in the resistance movement
they built a home that remains a gathering place for generations
Michalina has eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren
Though she has reached one hundred years of age
She still remembers the taste of penny candy and dances to the sound of a comb
no complaining… and allow yourself sweet pleasures!” says the centenarian
Perhaps this wise balance – between work and joy
between giving to others and moments of carefree delight – is her secret to longevity
The regional self-government has been honoring 100-year-old residents since 2018
and over 470 people have received the Unitas Durat medal to date
