Tradition has it that on the Night of St Lawrence
you should make a wish when you see one of the many shooting stars that blaze across the sky at this time of year
Istria is particularly attractive to stargazers
so a number of towns and villages hold special events around the occasion
In Rovinj
as torches line the waterfront and candles illuminate the terrace tables of bars and restaurants
the Roxanne dance troupe will be giving a special performance through the streets and squares of the city
the Trio Viècia Ruveîgno will be singing traditional regional songs
with other acts due to appear along the waterfront Obala Alda Rismonda and around gallery-lined Grisia
Elsewhere across Istria, there will be St Lawrence Night events in Premantura, Lupoglav and Nova Vas, which all stage folk festivals, while perhaps the most atmospheric celebration takes place at St Sophia’s Church, an early Christian landmark among the ruins of Dvigrad, near Kanfanar, where a concert takes place at 8pm on Friday
For pure stargazing, there's no better place in Istria than the Observatory at Višnjan, which is holding special Astro Nights all through August, tickets available here.

When patients experience blood-vessel blockage that could lead to a stroke
correcting the condition as soon as possible can be critical
Take the case of a female patient who was stuttering over four days
chairman of neurosurgery at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) Hospital
He knew that an MRI scan and an MR angiogram showed some vessel blockage
and the woman was prescribed aspirin as a blood thinner
A follow-up CT angiogram showed the same blockage
"It was assumed she would be OK," Charbel said
but the woman's condition continued to decline
"What was not recognized was how bad her blood flow was."
Charbel had previously conducted research on how restricted blood flow affects the brain
and the importance of quantifying that flow correctly
these are very high-risk patients," he said
Charbel used a procedure based on quantitative MR angiography visualization software that he began developing some 15 years ago
called NOVA (noninvasive optimal vessel analysis)
and direction of blood flowing through any vessel in the body through a QMRA
The woman was brought into the MR angiography suite at UIC
where Charbel and colleagues reopened certain vessels in the brain in a "not-so-low-risk procedure," he said
"We told the family there was about a 20% risk of death or serious complication
there was a 100% chance she would not make it."
With the additional information provided by NOVA and the QMRA
the woman's vessels were successfully reopened
"It was the lack of information that prevented people from recognizing how serious her condition was," Charbel recounted
IL-based company that Charbel founded in 1999 and of which he currently serves as president
said the company has reached a point in its development where it is "doing a reboot."
VasSol is trying to get the word out about its two products -- albeit with a small staff -- through expanded distribution
"I don't think the future of the company is necessarily for us to do distribution on our own," Doherty said
"so we will be looking for a distributor or perhaps a large MRI company
which may be interested in licensing the software to put it directly on a scanner."
Charbel has long had an interest in stroke and vascular diseases of the brain
and his work has been influenced by patients with restricted blood vessels
"What was very striking is that we saw a lot of patients -- and still do -- who get different opinions from different people who are very knowledgeable," he said
"Even we have different opinions on the same patient on different days
I was disturbed by this and felt there was a need for some quantitative approach [to the discrepancies]."
One solution would be to find a way to measure blood flow in blood vessels noninvasively
because MRI has no risk associated with it
It took a number of years to perfect the software and the MR quantitative procedure
Image acquisition took as long as three to four hours
and postprocessing required an additional eight to nine hours
Given advances in technology over the past decade
the process today takes approximately 20 minutes on a PC
"It's all automated on-the-fly," Charbel said
and you have the results as they come out of the magnet
I look at it as a new era of quantitative medicine."
VasSol began enrolling patients in the Vertebrobasilar Flow Evaluation and Risk of Transient Ischemic Attack and Stroke (VERITAS) study
which was funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Participants include Washington University in St
The VERITAS study comes from one of Charbel's findings from using NOVA: that the brain can self-correct for any blockages in the cranial arteries
The initial study that prompted NIH funding included approximately 60 patients who were scheduled for surgery to clear blocked vascular arteries
"If [patients] are getting sufficient blood flow to the brain
we will take them out of planned surgery and continue to treat the conditions medically," Doherty said
"Their conclusion was that we can reduce the number of surgeries based on knowing the hematology of the entire patient
and not just looking to determine if there is a blockage or not."
VasSol has several potential extended applications for NOVA and QMRA in the works
including their use in the fingers and hands
The company is having some preliminary success regarding Raynaud's disease
or other areas to become cold and turn blue or white
The condition can cause ulcers because of the lack of circulation
Food and Drug Administration (FDA)]-approved treatment for [Raynaud's]
though there are multiple treatments that can be attempted medically and/or surgically," Charbel said
there is no way to test the efficacy of such treatments."
Charbel has developed a "cold hands" protocol for Raynaud's disease that has been validated; "we can measure blood flow in the fingers down to 0.8 mm," he said
VasSol is looking at the possibility of using NOVA and QMRA for renal patients to measure blood flow in the renal arteries without using contrast agents
"There are a number of renal patients who cannot tolerate contrast agents," Doherty said
Another area of exploration is measuring blood flow in the ophthalmic artery in the eye
given that some researchers believe glaucoma is a blood flow issue

several Croatian producers say the conditions look good for another award-winning year
Croatian olive oil producers had a successful year at the 2018 NYIOOC
receiving a record 40 awards for 45 entries
and Edi Družetić are optimistic about this year’s harvest and plan to enter the competition again next year to continue their success
Croatian olive oil producers enjoyed an unprecedentedly successful year at the 2018 NYIOOC World International Olive Oil Competition (NYIOOC)
Their success rate of 89 percent was the highest of any country that submitted at least 10 oils in the 2018 edition of the competition. Croatian producers also set records for Gold and Silver awards received.See Also:The best olive oils from Croatia
“Olive oil production is a constant challenge whose ultimate goal is to achieve the utmost quality,” Marija Buršić, of Buršić OPG, told Olive Oil Times. This year Buršić achieved just that, receiving a Best in Class for her De Kleva blend
“De Kleva is a combination of five types of olives: the Istrian bjelica
“It is rich in polyphenols and antioxidants that are good for our health.”
Buršić’s De Kleva had previously won a Gold at the competition and she plans to submit it again next year
She credited the oil’s success to both her family’s cultivation techniques and the unique location of their olive groves
a familiar theme among Croatian producers
“Nature is a very important partner in production,” Buršić said
with its undulating and sunny hills that veer towards the river
The conditions are exceptional: naturally diverse olive groves
an ideal terrain and an optimal microclimate.”
While Buršić did not say how her harvest is going this year compared with previous ones
several other producers who took home some of the competition’s top honors are optimistic that this year will be just as good as the last one
“This year looks great for us,” Vedrana Rakovac, the owner of OPG Rakovac, told Olive Oil Times. Rakovac took home a Gold award for her Bilini blend
Her Gold was one of 27 awarded to Croatian producers at the 2018 NYIOOC
It’s been a great year for the Istrian cultivar
which is very promising since Buža provides oil of extraordinary quality,” she said
“This might be a fantastic year for our Bilini extra virgin olive oil.”
This year was Rakovac’s first time entering the NYIOOC
Her Bilini had previously won awards at several Croatian olive oil competitions and she felt that entering an international competition with the pedigree of the NYIOOC was the next logical step for her brand
Rakovac plans to enter the competition again next year and
She is confident that her oil will win again due to the combination of her location
“We believe that our Bilini extra virgin olive oil’s ‘secret ingredient’ is the micro-location of our olive groves
as well as the share of individual cultivars which give a unique taste to our blend,” Rakovac said
our olive groves are positioned on the very edge of the olive’s natural habitat
which tends to extract the best from them.”
“I expect this year’s harvest to be quite good
just like the last few years were,” he told Olive Oil Times
Družetić also attributes the unique microclimate in the region of Istria to the success of Agroprodukt’s oils
“The important difference from our Salvela Buža compared with other oils is the varietal
which only grows in the south of Istria and has particularly natural aromatic values,” he said
Družetić said Agroprodukt plans on entering the competition next year too and hopes to win more awards with their Salvela Buža and Torcol
which did not receive any awards at the 2018 NYIOOC
“We will certainly be present for next year’s competition
to confirm the status of our oils,” he said
According to the International Olive Council, Croatia produced 5,000 tons of olive oil last year
making the small eastern European country the eighteenth largest producer globally
the quality of Croatian olive oils continues to be world-renowned
Most producers focus on quality over quantity
key for producers hoping to continue their impressive track record at the 2019 NYIOOC
“Each year’s harvest is different because of the weather influence and therefore challenging,” Vedran Lupić of OPG Lupić
Lupić and her husband won Croatia’s other Best in Class award for their Bembo Buža extra virgin olive oil
She said that producing award-winning oil is the culmination of careful harvesting and high-quality and good luck with the weather the weather
which Croatia has largely had this summer
we follow year-round tendering and modern agro-technical methods
with special attention given to hand harvesting in mid-October
thereby eliminating and reducing damage to the fruit,” she said
“To prove to ourselves that we have done a good job
we need to enter this competition every year,” she added

Many areas in Slovenia reached their coldest April morning over the last 100 years
The official meteorological station Nova vas na Blokah peaked at -20.6 °C which has set a new all-time national record for the month of April since the records began
Numerous extreme cold records also across other parts of central and western Europe
deep freeze and morning frosts have been destructive
the weather models were not wrong this time
An unpreceded extreme cold has verified across many parts of Europe this Wednesday morning
following the significant and historic snow a day before
Snowfall with some accumulation was reported even at the seaside in Slovenia and Croatia islands (Kvarner area)
the weather station Nova vas na Blokah hit -20.6 °C and set the new official lowest temperature for April (the previous record at the station Nova vas was -18.0 °C set on April 4th
There was another record of -26.1 °C recorded with an unofficial weather station in the village Retje near Loški Potok
The previous official record for Slovenia was held by station Pokljuka (elevation approx 1350 m ASL)
Many areas across the northern Balkans have seen even lower temperatures than they were during the last winter 2020/21
In the case of the Notranjska region in Slovenia (e.g
and Babno Polje) this was the colder morning of the winter
2021 set a new record having temperatures lower in April than January. Even if it happens in March, it is extremely rare. This is just a plain example of how extremely cold and historic event this event and this morning was for April
The main reason for these extreme cold records is the Arctic cold air mass that spread across a large part of Europe this week
Clear (no clouds) nights with barely any winds and fresh snow on the ground with dry air mass in the mid-levels are an ideal recipe for extremely cooling in the nighttime hours
these temperatures were so extremely low that the ongoing blossoming fruit trees and early growing states of the vegetation were simply burned and destroyed
Very low temperatures with record-breaking cold and damaging frost ware also reported from parts of England
another night with very low temperatures is expected
with possibly again going well below -10 °C in many areas
This will give vegetation just another kick and worsen the situation and damage done
this is the 5th year among the last 6 years when spring damaging frost occurs
There will also be cold again on Friday morning
It might be the new normal as the warming periods at the end of winter and in early spring are becoming quite frequent lately
This helps vegetation to start earlier than usual
making it even more vulnerable for any potential cold outbreaks that normally follow at the end of March or within the month of April
The ongoing Arctic cold blast arrived less than a week after a very warm and locally record-warm period at the final days of March. The chart below (left one), provided by Scott Duncan
reveals some of the most impressive values recorded on the 31st of March
It was +25.3 °C in Ljubljana (Slovenia)
+26.3 °C in Ettelbreck (Luxembourg) and +27.2 °C in Rheinau (Germany)
Many areas set their new March maximum temperature records
The chart on the right indicates the historic Arctic blast which brought extreme cold over much of Europe just 6 days after
spreading over western Europe on the 5th and then 6th/7th over central Europe
Becoming the historic and record-breaking cold outbreak for April
Nova vas na Blokah hit -20.6 °C and set the new official lowest temperature for April in Slovenia (the previous record at the station Nova vas was -18.0 °C set on April 4th
Below are some of the most impressive and record-breaking values this morning:
not a part of the national meteorological station network
But the records are still made with the proper equipment and WMO standards
so this is comparable to the official records by the national meteorological agency (ARSO)
also Croatia experienced extreme cold this morning
Although the clouds remaining with the front departing last night
the northern parts were badly hit with very low temperatures and indeed lead to a destructive frost
The most impressive values in the lowlands can be seen below:
All these areas and many others have low elevation
so the early spring greenage and blossoming trees were ongoing
So the damage done to the vegetation is significant to complete
a bit higher places over the Gorski Kotar and Lika plateau pushed the morning temperatures extremely low
Thanks to fresh snow and clear skies most of the night
What is interesting about this cold blast over Europe this time is that it has affected a large part of the continent and the origin of the air mass is both the Arctic and maritime
these extreme cold events in spring happen with drier
The cold blast first spread over western Europe and then continued towards the central parts of Europe
An impressive cold with the lowest temperatures pushing 5 to 9 °C below freezing in eastern
Quite a cold morning also developed across England and Scotland
Benson (England) hit an impressive -7.5 °C this morning
Attached below are temperatures this morning (left chart) and tabular data for the lowest temperatures for Apr 6th and 7th
Very low temperatures with record cold values were already reported across France on Tuesday
thanks to the core of the cold pool spreading behind the Arctic front
Numerous weather stations have set the all-time lowest temperature records for April
those can be seen on the right side of the chart in the table
breaking its previous record of -7.5 °C set on Apr 8th
Saint-Martin-du-Mont (21) hit -6.9 °C and set its new record after the previous record of -5.3 °C on Apr 3rd
Rouvroy-Les-Merles (60) broke its 40 years old record with -6.4 °C on Tuesday
breaking the old one of -5.4 °C set on April 10th
It appears likely that the upcoming Wednesday night and Thursday morning will bring another day with extremely low temperatures
Thanks to the improved mid-level conditions
winds have weakened and snow remains on the ground or just around the hills and mountains around the valleys
The deep upper core with nearly -40 °C at 500 mbar height is just passing the northern Balkans with unstable weather
Therefore we can expect it will be yet another rapid cooling overnight
with the potential for some areas to reach even lower temperatures than they experienced this Tuesday morning
The dewpoint temperatures are even below -10 °C in many areas
snow showers and even thunderstorms are ongoing in very cold air mass
One would say this is quite typical for April
We are in for another very cold night and even worse damage to the growing vegetation
which has been severely damaged or even totaled already this morning
It will also be again quite cold over Germany
The most intense cold will likely occur over the Balkan peninsula
especially where the snow has accumulated last night
The temperature will very likely slip into below -10 °C in some areas
potentially even close to or below -15 °C over the most prone areas for extreme cold mornings (closed valleys with snow)
***Graphics by Wetterzentrale, Wxcharts, and Meteociel
UPDATE: An extreme 100+ mbar pressure difference releases a historic Arctic cold blast towards Europe: damaging frost expected across central Europe
Alaska could challenge all-time April temperature records as potentially historic cold blast from the Arctic Ocean heads south this week

Shawn Ellington aka Murder Nova is known for being one of the original cast members on Street Outlaws
While the show broadcasted no-prep racing at its finest into the homes of millions of Americans
there was little relatability towards these high horsepower purpose-built machines and what most enthusiasts could fathom to build
we’ve seen a shift of these drivers wanting to build something more practical for the street
or have the ability to compete in more classes
The latest to join the Blue Oval brigade is Murder Nova with his 2020 Ford F-150 build
the crew went to work on color matched pieces to give the white F-150 a Storm Trooper appearance
An STX grille took center stage and to provide driver comfort the seat was lowered
Shawn might have taken the non-conventional approach to removing the front suspension of his 2020 Ford F-150
its likely that this one might be getting a Gen 5 3.0 or 3.8-liter too
since a Coyote swap was already in the works
the takeoffs from this truck will live on in a future build at 187 customs
As Shawn and his team continue to produce both unique and insanely fast rides
it’s good to see them supporting the grass roots street builds

involving the arrest of two persons suspected of killing a missing Italian citizen
were presented at a press conference held today
Photo: The results of the investigation were presented by Dr Jurij Ferme
Director of the Uniformed Police Directorate (middle)
Head of Nova Gorica PD's Criminal Police Division (second from right)
Assistant Head of Koper PD's Criminal Police Division
Commander of Republika Srpska's Criminal Police Directorate (far left)
Head of Mobile Police Team from Trieste (second from left)
The UPD-led operation included a successful search in Slovenia
and an exemplary example of a suspect arrest action
as a result of which the Trieste police requested Slovenia's assistance through Koper PD's Criminal Police Division
The Italian citizen is said to have left home in order to sell his Mercedes SW
The Slovenian police obtained some relevant information from Italian law enforcement agencies (concerning an alleged buyer for the car and a woman accompanying him
the use of the missing person's bank card in Slovenia on 21 June
and the names of people who potentially had contact with him that day)
By collecting information in the areas of Sežana
the police established that the missing Italian and his car had been recorded on the morning of 19 June 2011 at a Sežana service station
He was accompanied by a man thought to be the buyer of the car
Records also show that two suspects tried to use the Italian's bank card in different places that same day
This information was communicated to the Croatian and Bosnian police
The Croatian authorities reported that a metal grey Mercedes with Italian licence plates had entered Croatia on the evening of 19 June at Obrežje/Bregana and left the country at Slavonski Brod/Bosanski Brod
It was established that the driver and the woman accompanying him were citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina
the Slovenian police ascertained that the suspect had been a temporary resident and employee in the Nova Gorica area
he had worked for a sole trader based in the Gorizia region
the police analysed a sequence of mobile phone calls made from both the suspect and the missing man
which led them closer to the whereabouts of the victim
Since the victim's mobile phone was last connected to the Opatje Selo base station on 19 June 2011
on 8 July the Nova Gorica police assisted by Ljubljana and Novo Mesto PDs thoroughly searched the area
Lokavica and a gravel road leading to and surrounding Cerje Hill (known as the Napoleon route)
A male corpse was found at the foot of Cerje Hill shortly after the launch of the investigation
An investigating judge from Nova Gorica District Court and a state prosecutor from Nova Gorica District State Prosecutor's Office arrived at the scene of the crime
The investigating judge conducted an inspection of the crime scene and requested a forensic autopsy to be carried out on the victim
which was performed on 9 July 2011 by the National Institute of Forensic Medicine
The results confirmed the identity of the missing Italian citizen as well as the violent nature of his death
The corpse found and the evidence collected served as a basis for a criminal complaint for manslaughter under paragraphs 2 and 4 of Article 116 of the Slovenian Penal Code
The complaint was filed with Nova Gorica District State Prosecutor's Office on 9 July 2011 against a 29-year-old Bosnian male and a 28-year-old Bosnian female
The search operation was based on an intensified exchange of information between the law enforcement authorities of Italy
which is where the two suspects escaped to
The investigating judge from Nova Gorica District Court issued European and international arrest warrants
as well as a request for international legal assistance in criminal matters addressed to the judicial authorities of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro
Both suspects were apprehended on 11 July 2011 in Montenegro
The Montenegrin police conducted house searches and placed the suspects in extradition detention
House searches were also carried out by the Bosnian police following the suspects' arrest; a stolen scrap car was seized
Forensic and other activities related to the collection of evidence are still ongoing in all the countries concerned
The excellent cooperation that exists between the Slovenian
and Montenegrin police again confirmed that crime is tackled more effectively if resources are pooled
