DAY ONE CONCLUDED in Slovenia today at the third Euro Tour stop on the 2024 calendar as two events got underway the DYNAMIC BILLARD Podčetrtek Open for the men and the PREDATOR Women’s Podčetrtek Open Both events have made their way through four complete rounds and in the men’s event there have been no major casualties so far One player eyeing up his maiden Dynamic Billard Euro Tour win is Hungary’s Oliver Szolnoki but he’ll have to do it the hard way as he was sent to the one-loss side early doors Szolnoki has made one Euro Tour final as well as a couple of semi-finals but the main prize has eluded him He was coming into the event on the back of a gold medal-winning performance at last weeks Dynamic Billard European Championships in the 10-ball division Szolnoki enjoyed a win over rated Spaniard Diego Pedro Simon in his first match before being beaten by Juri Pisklov (Germany) “I was leading 3-1 in my second match and I didn’t play bad but when I broke perfect nothing went in and when he mis-hit the break somehow something went in and he had position I had nothing so one of those stupid ways to lose “It will be very long tomorrow and if I want to stay alive five matches in a row and that’s a lot and especially in this heat I think I’ll just have to get a good night’s sleep because tomorrow I’ll have to fight all day.” They like to start them young on the Dynamic Billard Euro Tour and one competitor this week is just eight years old Young Latvian Aleksejs Grigolunovics is here for the European Junior Championships starting next week and took the opportunity to season himself in the men’s game He took four racks off Germany’s Sajan Schroter before retiring from the event with a little fatigue before he faced Luca Menn is something in itself and it will be interesting to see how he fares next week Darya Siranchuk enjoyed a fine day with two solid victories to advance on the winners’ side The Ukrainian enjoyed a fine week at the European Championships collecting a silver and bronze and she got off to the best possible start as she won three matches sending No.1 ranked Pia Filler to the losers’ side and then despatching Jolien Schuurman who won this event last year Play continues at  tomorrow at 9.30 for the men and at 13.00 for the ladies Tables 1 & 2 will be streamed throughout on YouTube while Table 2 will be available throughout on the EPBF platform All other tables can be viewed on the Kozoom.com website where there are a variety of subscription options This week’s Euro Tour tournaments are 10-ball and players compete in a double-elimination format playing down to the last 32 competitors for the men and last 16 for the women From there it is single elimination until the finish The men’s matches are races-to-8 racks with alternate break Results, live scoring, and draw are available at www.epbf.com Go to discussion... © AZBilliards.com EPPA inc. 1998-2025 All Rights Reserved. Site design by GRIN tech Not only did the junior athletes have a chance to perform over the 15th and 16th of June but the seniors were also active in the Podčetrtek Senior European Cup as well Azerbaijan secured four of the total gold medals which brought about the top place position on the medal table Of the 29 nations, the hosts Slovenia, placed fifth overall. This was supported by a gold medal from Leila MAZOUZI another -63kg athlete from this notoriously strong -63kg nation Two Olympic Champions also hail from this category in Slovenia with another top contender with World and European accolades approaching her Olympic opportunity in Paris This result wasn’t too great a surprise for Mazouzi who has triumphed to place on the podium in both the Cadet European Championships and EYOF but has been working towards the gold medal on the senior circuit It was an incredibly strong day for Mazouzi who demonstrated her repertoire throughout each of her contests there were none in the category who rivalled her confidence and determination which was likely upheld by the crowd and supporters in the Sports Hall Podčetrtek Mazouzi will return to the junior circuit in a couple of weeks to compete in the Slovenj Gradec Junior European Cup The Ministry of Culture contributed EUR 1,614,246.14 to this renovation project worth EUR 2,582,022.08 The funds were allocated to the Castle View Experience project which included the renovation of the castle’s interior a comprehensive revitalisation and modernisation of this cultural monument through the development of sustainable experiences created with modern technologies and newly established tourism products The money was received from European funds from the Recovery and Resilience Facility Plan (RRP) The Podčetrtek Municipality also secured EUR 250,075.12 by participating in tenders from the Ministry of Culture.  The Minister of Culture Asta Vrečko stressed: »The renovation of the Podčetrtek Castle was one of the major cultural heritage investments carried out in the area of Kozjansko and Obsotelje since Slovenia’s independence In addition to static and energy rehabilitation and the restoration of historic walls that tell stories about our local and national history programmatic renovation is equally important as it makes this historical and cultural monument accessible to the local community and to all local and foreign visitors The renovation implies coexistence and cooperation brings new incentives to the area and promotes its rich cultural heritage The castle is thus no longer just a historical monument The renovation made use of the most modern technological and scientific methods complementing traditional skills and knowledge Heritage teaches us that it is primarily a combination of the two that ensures sustainability and resilience in modern times (particularly in light of the climate crisis) are becoming increasingly important for our present and the future.« A significant addition to the castle is a viewing platform built on the flat roof of the renovated part of the castle The platform will offer visitors a new experience of virtual and real view of the Obsotelje and Kozjansko landscapes The castle’s programme will henceforth be enriched by an interactive experience depicting medieval trials called Thursday’s Judgment (Četrtkova sodba) an observatory with a movable interactive screen and a responsive observatory with two tourist products: a castle banquet and castle wedding.  In addition to the funds provided by the Ministry of Culture the Podčetrtek Municipality obtained funds for the castle trail renovation project entitled »Castle Trail in the Podčetrtek Destination« from the Fund for the Sustainable Development of Slovenian Tourism.  Did you find the information you were looking for Do you want to receive a response from the responsible institution Clicking on the link will open your default e-mail program and automatically draft a message that you can send to the institution responsible for the content of this website ask for a reply Text description provided by the architects. “Of course when you look at the stats and the chance to win six in a row there’s pressure but I’ve had that before the event because I know the way I play and the way I feel about the Euro Tour is always positive I was 13 and I had the chance to play Oliver (Ortmann) and Dimitri Jungo and also beat them so I always have good memories when I look back on the Euro Tour so every time I come here the table is playing good and it’s also my favourite place here against Niels in 2015 so coming back there’s always pressure and this  is what I like about sports having pressure and having the chance to make records so I always look at the positive things “When I look back to when I was 17 or so and I looked to Albin who was winning the China Open and his first world title and he was 25 or 26 and I though ‘damn he’s already that old’ and now I’m 26 myself but I know you can do this sport on the high level until you’re 45 so I still have a long way to go “Seeing all the new young players is also good because it shows you we always bring up good people and the younger generation enjoys the sports which is always positive and this is what the future will bring We have players like Felix Vogel from Germany who’s already been to a final then Walter Laikre and many more I keep an eye on them and it’s good to see,” he concluded Another player fancied to do well this week is the in-form Pole who is starting to make a real name for himself in a national squad that is very deep in talent Fortunski came through with a 9-6 win over Kostas Connaris (Turkish North Cyprus) and goes up against Sajan Schroter (Germany) tomorrow Sitting at No.2 on the ranking and having enjoyed his second Euro Tour victory in Tampere last year Fortunski has emerged as arguably the strongest player in the Polish pack “I won for the first time in a long time on the Euro Tour last year so now I focus on every single tournament and I just want to win one of them this year It’s really tough to win here as there are a lot of really good players in Europe and every match is tough so you have to keep that focus on every single shot and get the luck every now and again.” Play continues at 9.00 on Friday with the conclusion of Losers’ Round 2 and plays all the way down to the last 16 with a total of eight rounds All Euro Tour tournaments are 9-ball and players compete in a double-elimination format and then single elimination until the finish All matches are races to 9 racks with alternate break Results, live scoring, and draw are available at www.epbf.com Go to discussion... slovenia all images courtesy enota photographer: miran kambič slovenia-based architecture firm enota has completed ‘podčetrtek sports hall’ a municipal facility located adjacent to the small town’s main road faceted approach finished in a bold shade of red the project aims to have a playful and dramatic presence as the city’s only local indoor venue connecting two driveways on polar points of the site is the angular walkway that defines the front facade of the monolithic structure shielding the entrance from the road’s visual and acoustic disturbances the spatially-designed path is incised into the building’s form itself pushing and pulling the interior floor plan the staggered approach expands in front of the entrance doors to generate a public square-like space the facade of the design is wrapped in a dark cladding which features a punctured floral pattern on its surface the light from the gym and interior distinctly defines the pattern giving the structure a visual identity for locals and visitors.  (left) walkway to the parking lot (right) detail of perforation client: municipality of podčetrtek size: 3,570 m2 project team: dean lah structural engineering: elea iC mechanical services: nom biro electrical planning: forte inženiring AXOR presents three bathroom concepts that are not merely places of function but destinations in themselves — sanctuaries of style The opening ceremony of the European Veteran Championships 2023 took place this afternoon where the Major of Podčetrtek who has practiced judo himself during his high school years has been in office for 18 years and generated an enormous development of sporting culture The Major shared his delight of hosting this event whilst he briefly celebrated his birthday with the judo family It means a lot for our local municipality to host such an event but we are very active with organising different sporting events We have organised several European Championships and we are very proud that judo is a regular event in our calendar We have increased the number of tourist staying in our area by half a million per year 1200 tourists are staying in our city.  The President of the Slovenian Judo Federation Mr Lovrencij GALUF and the Mayor of Podčetrtek Mr Peter MISJA; Day one concluded at the Dynamic Billard Terme Olimia Open at Podčetrtek Slovenia as four full rounds of play completed Often the story on the opening day is more about who lost than who won and early casualties in Podčetrtek included No.2 ranked Mario He who was defeated in the first winners round at the hands of young Polish player Sambor Stachowiak Sambor had recently competed in the U19’s division of the European Youth Championships and this would most certainly be the biggest scalp of his fledgling career Stachowiak also kept his good form going as he went on to beat Bulgaria’s Kalin Varbanov to take his place in the winners’ qualification round Another youngster adding a big name to his resume was Paul Vilches-Pardo who defeated Ralf Souquet by 9-8 a 20 year-old from Bordeaux was delighted with his win I make 2 or 3 mistakes that allowed him to come back but I remained professional until the end and it paid off!” Vilches-Pardo came unstuck in the next round going down to compatriot Benjamin Belhassen but gets his second chance on the one-loss side tomorrow Other noted players to suffer defeat on day one include Mohammad Soufi (Syria) Thorsten Hohmann (Germany) and Italy’s Frank Candela Making his return to the Euro Tour after a six year absence was Nick Van Den Berg whose storied career has included nine victories on the pan-European tour This time he was in the company of his young son Sky who recently competed in the European Youth Championships which concluded last Wednesday in the same venue Van Den Berg senior recorded wins over Matjaz Erculj and Marinus Gennissen to take his place in the winners’ qualification round tomorrow while junior lost his opening game and will be fighting to stay in the competition when play resumes on Sunday morning “A lot of new young players who are shooting very well are my opponents now but I am trying hard to still have the edge I really like to be back here at the Euro Tour and compete with the best players in Europe “I am very proud of Sky; he’s only been playing for one year and improving every week so for him we see this Euro Tour as picking up experience Coaching-wise he is in the hands of Rienus Gennissen who is a great coach I just like to see him play and enjoy it.” Big names already eliminated include Bojana Sarac (Serbia) and Germany’s Ina Kaplan On the winners’ side through to the qualification round are the likes of No.1 ranked player Eyllul Kibaroglu Pia Filler Veronika Ivanovskaia and Oliwia Zalewska Play continues on Sunday morning at 10.00 local time the final stages of the Longoni 9 Ball League qualifying stages took place and it was the young duo of Revo Maimre and Karl Gnadeberg who came through for Estonia as they defeated Czech Republic 7-4 who played in the recent European Youth Championships was a replacement for Dennis Grabe and he held his end up superbly to help defeat the vastly experienced Roman Hybler and Petr Urban The win brought Estonia a semi-final spot in Lasko on October 11th where they will face the Netherlands The other semi-final will be contested between Poland and Norway and the two successful teams will then meet in the final which takes place in Treviso Results, live scoring, and draw are available at www.epbf.com Go to discussion... The first day of the European Championships Veterans Podcetrtek 2023 is underway Veterans Commissioner of the International Judo Federation Mr Flori is here to observe and support the event He kindly took a short break to share his views so far All four-tatami providing us with notably fast paced actions I am pleased with the number of countries and judoka attending at this event The level of the tournament is also excellent we have seen strong judoka from Georgia and Azerbaijan so the event is challenging and at good standards There is always space to improve and for us is to improve the number of female entries for these events Who would have thought when we started this in 1996 that we would grow to this great level the first veteran commission was created in Hungary Following robust work with plenty of planning the first Veterans European Championships was organised There are 37 nations taking part at this week’s event who is the highest ranked judoka in Hungary [8th Dan] explained the key challenge faced to have veterans project explored across more countries The primary challenge to have every single national federation involved is finances most of the athletes here travels at their own expense these events [Veteran Europeans and Worlds] reflect on the pure love of judo This is the demonstration of their passion for our sport they are still fast on the mat and looking healthy and fit I am really pleased to be here to witness this great event You can watch the event live online via ippontv.com We’re down to the last 16 at the Dynamic Billard Terme Olimia Open at Podčetrtek Slovenia and there are plenty of big guns still in the field to contest what promises to be an exciting final days play on Monday six rounds were fought out today as the field reduced down to last 32 single elimination and then onto the final 16 players No.1 ranked player Miesko Fortunski (Poland) is on track to maintain his lofty position following a 9-3 win over countryman Radoslaw Babica who has gamely battled back after being dumped onto the one-loss side of the draw very early in the competition Two WPA Junior World Champions are still in the mix with Moritz Neuhausen beating come-backing Nick Van Den Berg 9-6 and Estonia’s Karl Gnadeberg defeating Austrian Markus Pfistermuller 9-4 a winner at his last Euro Tour event in Austria in May is probably the favourite to win tomorrow but he faced a tough proposition in Wiktor Zielinski in their last 32 clash came through the test by a 9-5 scoreline to set up a round of 16 match against Neuhausen tomorrow “Of course it was the first match where I got two dry or illegal breaks of course I got the best player out of the losers round (Zielinski) I thought it was impossible to get the best player but I was playing all my matches pretty good – maybe I missed one ball and against Wiktor “I’m feeling confident but you also need that luck on your side because when I had two illegal breaks But he still came with crazy good shots but I was never worried because as long as I feel good I don’t really mind who my opponent is because the way I play Making a run up the rankings is the Netherland’s Marc Bijsterbosch who was a runner-up to Miesko Fortunski last time out in Tampere winning 9-8 against Wojciech Szewczyk who is always hard to beat Bijsterbosch now faces Germany’s up-and-coming Luca Menn tomorrow “Wojciech is a world champion so he is always a tough opponent I was a bit lucky as he missed at 8-8 so I could finish the match but that’s how the game can go sometimes My break is going well and I’m delighted to go through but tomorrow is hopefully Play continues tomorrow at 10.00 with the quarter-finals at 12 midday concluding with the championship match at 17.00 In the Euro Tour Women’s Terme Olimia Open the semi-final line-up will see No.3 ranked player Pia Filler take on Slovenian hope Ana Gradisnik and Norway’s Nina Torvund meet Jolien Schuurman (NED) it is only her second-ever Euro Tour appearance and coming off the back of a relatively disappointing European Youth Championships she will be full of confidence for tomorrow Wins today against the likes of Veronika Ivanovskaia and then Oliwia Zalewska to make the last four will stand her in good stead when the semi-finals get underway at 10.00 Results, live scoring, and draw are available at www.epbf.com Go to discussion... It has been a long period for the organising team of Slovenia hosting both the Veteran and Kata European Championships as well as a Kodokan Seminar and now they are welcoming over 250 athletes from 22 nations for the Senior European Cup 2023 They have excelled in their hosting skills and the athletes have much to look forward to this weekend Some arriving in Podcetrtek have been preparing for the event in the OTC in Poreč Croatia and will be ready to take on the challenge for a gold medal In fact SAMARDZIC siblings will be in action as Andjela will also be competing in -63kg this time when we usually see her in the -57kg category The live draw will take place this evening at 19:00 local time, watch the draw at JudoTV.com We may already be swirling in the excitement of the fast-approaching world championships in Tashkent which begins next week The Celje-Podcetrtek Senior European Cup is welcoming athletes from three continents for the two-day event the live draw commencing at 20:00 local time Among the strong contenders for Europe we have junior success VARGA Brigitta (HUN) who has seemingly made a tremendous transition this year on to the senior circuit The -63kg athlete took bronze in the first Olympic qualifier this year in Ulaanbaatar For the men, attention will be on the -73kg Bilal CILOGLU (TUR), the senior world bronze medallist in 2021, defeating the likes of Hidayat HEYDAROV (AZE) on his way to the podium We haven’t seen him on the competition circuit since 2021 due to a serious injury picked up in January which led to surgery and a lengthy recovery so we welcome him back to competition and of course wish all competitors good luck Both the European Judo Union and the Slovenian Judo Federation are gratified with the outcome of the European Judo Championships Veterans Podcetrtek 2023 which has formally ended yesterday evening with a rather moving team event The programme continues in Podcetrtek and whilst we are settling in to view the European Judo Championships Kata 2023 we sat with the President of the European Judo Union TOTH Laszlo to talk about last weeks’ happenings and discuss further plans.  I was filled with sadness when the last contest finished because what we have seen this past week left me speechless The emotions and moments which this event allowed us to experience was better than an Olympic qualifier and it was a great experience to watch this event and friendship these judoka showed us on and off the mat for each other was heart-warming We need to build on these grateful moments and advocate for them I was also very pleased that we had a very low number of injuries More Then Sport has once again been validated throughout the whole week It is very important that we give the same amount of attention to our veterans as we do for our Olympic qualifying events One of our goal is to organise events at a high standard for not only the seniors but the veterans too to show our appreciation towards their time and commitment to judo this aspect was overlooked which I believe was one of the reasons we have not had reasonable number of attendances besides ensuring their prime event is at good quality we are going to start a European Veteran Judo Tour which will include approximately seven events We are also seeking to establish a Veteran Commission I have had a lot of meetings and we are looking to set a strong reliable team to support the veteran category we are moving to the right direction.  I must address the Slovenian Judo Federation They involved local judo clubs and shown a great effort in pulling their members together We have had young volunteers from local judoka clubs and they supported our event with discipline They were the perfect example of how judo can educate one and I am positive that even high paid management companies would not have been able to deliver this standard The credit for an exceptional volunteer team goes to Ruslan Yankowsky and Urska Zolnir-Jugovar The whole of Slovenian judo showed they can be united They delivered an exceptional event and we are grateful for that.  I also would like to mention that we have had two Olympic Champions here supporting. EJU Sport Director, Urska Zolnir-Jugovar who is the head of organising committee for these events, coordinated involving her family, to ensure the events run smoothly. Tina Trstenjak also came and joined our Referee Commission for the last two days. It was an honour to have both of them heavily involved I witnessed good collaboration with the local organisers and seen devoted I was truly content to see how well everyone worked together as a team.  I am looking forward to the European Judo Championships Kata as we begin a new week with more action Part of which will include the Kodokan Kata Seminar on Wednesday an event which we last held in Europe over a decade ago we will have inclusion judo seminar and finally a senior European Cup and the Slovenian Judo Federation is doing an excellent job.  we recall a few moments from the European Judo Championships Veterans 2023 European Judo Championships Veterans Podcetrtek 2023 Following some outstanding performances in the Podcetrtek Senior European Cup in Slovenia Ukraine took home an impressive four gold medals Marandian has accumulated numerous continental open and cup medals but this is his first European medal in 2015 with a silver finish he was able to double his collection winning bronze in the M3 -81kg category his results became secondary to non when discovering his dedication to judo To say he lives for judo might be an understatement as indisputably Makhult spends more time on the mat than off MM: I could not imagine my life in any different way Judo is part of my life since the age of 5 and despite taking a brief break during my senior years Judo is my full-time job and my life all in all MAKHULT Mihály with one of his athlete and colleague KORANYI Miklos The pair of them coached each other to success The 39-year-old humbled Hungarian has been part of the Veteran stage since the beginning of time He entered the M3 field for the first time this year meaning it has been 10 years since the beginning of this phase of his personal career We asked about his experience throughout the process of moving up from one age group to another MM: To be honest I don’t really feel the difference yet People say the younger you are the better or easier I am sure I will have a different opinion when get towards my 50s The moment you win a veteran European bronze medal Veteran World Judo Championships 2022 Krakow where MAKHULT Mihaly (first from right) won bronze who showed off with his tremendous ne-waza skills throughout the day He exposed the hardship cutting down to allowed him to pick his first veteran world medal For Hungarian team is known to do well at the veteran Europeans it is obligatory to attend at the Veteran Hungarian Championships claimed victory at four separate occasions he is heading back to the Hungarian border as he is due to coach his team at an important championships tomorrow UEMURA Haruki is presently observing the European Judo Championships Kata Podcetrtek 2023 Sensei Uemura visited the Kata World Championships many times it is the first time that the European Judo Union welcomed him at the prime event of Kata contestants Mr Uemura expressed his thoughts on the two-day event.  I am very happy to know that there is a record number of participants at this tournament I am very happy to see this high number of participants. Personally Sometime people just focus on the form only but inside this form there is a principle.  According to Kano Shihan there are four method of judo training: Kata people can study the principle of judo. In randori people can use code of discipline into their training people can understand and acquire knowledge it’s a discussion or monolog and through such So Kata is very important in order to understand the principle and basic knowledge of judo It is not about the forms as much as it is about the principles steps and how to fall.  To give you an example people can understand how to get the proper form and proper principle and this principle can then connect to the Osoto gari afterwards I am very happy to see that participants are taking kata practice seriously and I hope this continues.  As per the quality of the event I am confident to say that I can see good development Part of it is because of the amount of study put into and I hope that the effort towards that likewise continues The CARE system is also a very good idea and addition to this development Using the knowledge of the supervisor is very important too.  Kodokan Seminar will be hosted in Europe once again alongside other Kodokan experts will be supporting the function.  I am excited to take part in the Kodokan seminars again The focus during this seminar will be on Riai the underlying principles behind techniques: kuzushi Other Kodokan experts will come and teach Riai properly and we hope every will enjoy it Azerbaijan was represented by a team of six talented athletes preliminaries of the kata championship started on 12th June with the highly anticipated finals held on 13th June a Kodokan seminar was conducted on 14th June in Podčetrtek further enriching the The new facility is located at the site of the former wintertime covering of the outdoor pool. The cover was supposed to be retracted every summer to free up the scarce outdoor space, but in practice, this was never done because of the complexity of the retraction process. With its size and form, the membrane covering of the outdoor water surfaces stood out considerably from the surrounding built structure. The seemingly complex geometry gives the new roof static strength allowing the entire pool space to be covered virtually without supports the new roof floats above the pool platform Due to the lack of outdoor spaces in the summer it was imperative to examine solutions which would deliver the same closed space used by the guests in winter as an open space in summer together with the ability to fully open all the facade glass surfaces enable the guests to seamlessly pass through the interior of the building Despite its size and the space it occupies the new roof simply acts as a big summertime sunshade and does not usurp any of the precious exterior space At the second day of the European Cup in Celje-Podcetrtek Russia won two gold medals and the medal ranking for over two days The host nation did again good business at day two taking two victories in the women’s class and Slovenian is the final winner in the overall medal ranking Promissing judoka Khasan Khalmurzaev of Russia claimed the victory in the men’s U81kg category He was able to defeat Guillaume Riou of France and won all his five matches Alan Betanov (RUS) and Matteo Marconcini won bronze For Khasan Khalmurzaev it was his second victory in a row after winning the European Cup in Orenburg His brother Khusen Khalmurzaev won silver on Sunday in Celje. Find the full gallery here you wouldn’t be wrong to mistake his grandfather for a character out of a fairy tale A kindly headmaster assigned to an impoverished farming region of eastern Slovenia (then part of Yugoslavia) Jože Brilej created a school so special that children begged to attend So esteemed was his work that he was bestowed Slovenia’s highest award for educators: enough money to build a cottage in the forest next to a babbling brook the headmaster and his family escaped to the cottage for peace and communion among the flora and fauna of the woods But their peace did not last long: Drunken passersby returning home from the market at night began to suspect that lamps in the cottage had been lit by witches As rumors of unnatural activity grew louder Brilej made plans to dismantle the cottage and rebuild it deeper in the forest Out of building scraps and discarded materials and hung her in the trees near the footpath The fear of the villagers turned to delight filling the woods with characters and scenes from beloved fairy tales—all made with his own two hands his forest haven drew visitors from distant lands—and the children who had been his students were bringing their own children to see his sanctuary of imagination and ingenuity However fantastical it might sound, the enchanted hillside is decidedly real. Brilej built the cottage—its first structure—in 1967, and in 1990, he opened it to the public. He remained involved in its operations until his death in 2015 at the age of 91. Koča pri Čarovnici (in Slovenian “Witch’s Cottage”) includes the original dwelling and a winding forest path lined with Brilej’s creations named Dežela Pravljic in Domišljije In the years since he created his first friendly witch the park has remained a small but determined part of the tourism infrastructure that now sustains Slovenia’s Podčetrtek region Since the country first voted for independence from Yugoslavia in 1990 most dramatically after Slovenia joined the European Union in 2004 The industry got a head start in Podčetrtek with the area’s early investment in its natural hot springs the region’s long-famed therapeutic waters were made publicly available in Terme Olimia’s first wooden pool and the spa is now one of Slovenia’s most popular so has traffic to Koča pri Čarovnici: Kneževič estimates it draws up to 10,000 visitors annually the attraction is easy to miss from the road with little more visible than a hand-lettered sign now converted into a “How They Once Lived” museum depicting the Slovenian farm life of Brilej’s youth The cottage also houses a trinket shop: Witch dolls hang from the ceiling and witch-head-topped pencils crowd earthenware jars a forest footpath lined with more than 60 scenes from fairy tales the mix of familiar and foreign can be exhilarating Here is a recognizable tableau of Snow White’s dwarves gaily making music twinkling fairy lights illuminate the flaxen-haired Twinkle Sleepyhead heroine of a well-loved Slovenian fairy tale Motion-triggered sound and movement give displays an element of surprise A huge part of the park’s appeal is that it is self-made or creature appears prefabricated; nothing looks new you didn’t have stores where you can go and buy material plastic… so my grandfather built from scrap material… old houses old washing machines,” says Kneževič Slovenia’s markets have since changed funds to support tourism development have become easier to obtain but he and his family will continue doing things the old way would be to abandon his grandfather’s values When he created Primary School Podčetrtek Brilej imagined a place where children ages 7 to 15 would acquire knowledge and skills by operating miniaturized versions of real-world institutions and a radio station—all run by and for students with the goal of teaching sustainability and conservation A lush imaginary world built conspicuously by hand Koča pri Čarovnici also seems to encourage self-sufficiency and respect for the natural environment in its visitors “The point of our fairy tale land is to make things with used materials and do it on our own not to call some firm [to do it for you],” Kneževič says “It’s another way of educating children.” Many of the park’s repeat visitors were first introduced to it shortly after Slovenia got its independence from Communist Yugoslavia thinks children’s imaginations have since changed video games and television cartoons were less widely available and children’s play was largely outdoors; as a result childhood fantasies were grounded in nature parents worked shorter days and were more available to read to their children Irena Mrak and Irma Potočnik Slavič geographers at the University of Ljubljana agree: Slovenians now work longer hours than they did before the country’s markets became globalized While Slovenia considers itself “a nation who likes to go back to nature,” longer work days have translated to less hours outside and encounters with nature that once prioritized tranquility now prioritize efficiency When parents return to the park with children of their own and wander its meandering paths the park says for them: Each curio and hand-painted sign whispers the pride of making new from old It also sends a message about the responsibility to preserve creatures of fantasy and the forest that provides their home Brilej’s descendants meet at the cottage on weekends and holidays to perform upkeep men restore aging structures and rewire electrical connections while women rebuild dolls they gather to produce the handmade souvenirs sold in the park’s shop Kneževič returned to Podčetrtek from a brewery job in Serbia to take over full-time management of the park with his wife their two “little witches,” and his extended family He hasn’t looked back; keeping the place true to his grandfather’s original mission sustains the park people used to laugh at my grandfather: ‘What is the principal of the primary school doing I see why it was so important for him,” he says We depend on ad revenue to craft and curate stories about the world’s hidden wonders Consider supporting our work by becoming a member for as little as $5 a month Follow us on Twitter to get the latest on the world's hidden wonders Like us on Facebook to get the latest on the world's hidden wonders This weekend the European Cup for seniors takes place in Celje – Podčetrtek There are 24 countries from Europe competing as well as a team from Canada On this competition there are 402 athletes the category with ost judoka is the mens division U73kg  with 54 competitors For women the best category is U57kg with 31 competitors There are some well-known names from the judo scene such as European CHampions Rok Drakšič and Lucija Polavder as well as Ana Velenšek of the home nation and the Russian brothers Khalmurzaev who have made their appearance in the senior category this year Host nation Slovenia will represent new and  young judo hopes who continue the path of the successful Olympic team This year it the first time that the European judo cup is organised in one of the most popular Therms in Slovenia this must be a good basis for the ultimate performances The competition is held in sports hall Podčetrtek and starts at 10am CET The organisation of the EJU European Cupis in the hands of Judo club Z`dežele Sankaku Celje Find the draw here.
