MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka reached the round of 16 at the Miami Open on Saturday, when Elena-Gabriela Ruse retired with an injury
She's such a fighter," Sabalenka said in her postmatch
Just thank you guys for coming and supporting
who arrived in Miami fresh off a loss in last week's Indian Wells final
wrapped up the first set at 6-1 before Romanian Ruse was forced to retire with a right thigh injury
Up next for Sabalenka, the three-time Grand Slam champion, will be the winner of Saturday night's match on the grandstand between American and defending Miami Open champion Danielle Collins and Swiss qualifier Rebeka Masarova
Third-seed Coco Gauff also progressed into the round of 16 with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Greece's Maria Sakkari
On the men's side, top-seed Alexander Zverev defeated Jacob Fearnley 6-2
Zverev looked comfortable against the British qualifier
mixing a solid serve with dominance from the baseline while saving the only two break points he faced during the 74-minute match
For Zverev, who lost in the first round at Indian Wells, the win gave him a German-record 145th Masters 1000 win, one more than Tommy Haas. He will now face Australia's Jordan Thompson
"Happy to kind of have improved a few things from Indian Wells where I didn't feel well on the court
I didn't feel like I played good," Zverev told reporters
"Hopefully this is just the first of many matches for me here and I can continue playing well."
that means there are no Indian Wells semifinalists left in Miami

We found ourselves on opposite sides of how to explain biological origins
We published an anthology in 2004 with Cambridge University Press that featured Darwinists
and self-organizational theorists: Debating Design: From Darwin to DNA
we also debated regularly on college campuses throughout the early and mid 2000s
with him periodically sending me his latest book (he was immensely prolific)
With the 20th anniversary of our Cambridge anthology happening this year
UK podcaster Subboor Ahmad invited us to his podcast to discuss where the conversation about Darwinism and intelligent design had gone in the intervening years
It was the last time I interacted with a live

Others certainly knew Michael better than me
Yet I got to see him from the vantage of someone whose views clashed with his (rather than the vantage of like-minded colleagues)
he never lost his good will or his eagerness for free
even on topics where he thought the other party was completely and hopelessly misguided
as he did about my embrace of intelligent design
I thought his embrace of Darwinism was likewise completely and hopelessly misguided
Unlike some debates I’ve had with opponents of intelligent design
I never had the sense with Michael that we were keeping score and adding up points to determine a winner
I wasn’t sure what to make of Michael when I first met him and saw him in action. That said, I wasn’t sure what to make of Phil Johnson either when I first met him — a lawyer taking on biological evolution, really? Both ended up as my friends. And both are now sadly gone (here’s my remembrance of Phil)
Michael struck me as full of himself but also as not taking himself too seriously
as when someone in the audience asked him a gotcha question to make him look foolish
I’ve tried to come up with a single word that captures my recollection of Michael at our first encounter and then in the subsequent decades of our friendship
and not in a reserved or modest way but with spirit and gusto
The funniest incident I recall with Michael occurred at a Greer-Heard Point-Counterpoint Forum that took place in Georgia in February of 2006
The Greer-Heard forum was a generously underwritten annual event featuring two speakers taking opposite sides on an important cultural issue
Wright concerning the historicity of the biblical accounts about Jesus
and it can be purchased to this day on Amazon.
This forum provoked a remark from Michael that I found hilariously funny and that’s etched into my memory
Our exchange took place around the time that the new atheists
Richard Dawkins’s The God Delusion would be published later that year
But Dawkins’ full throttle assault against theism and his case for atheism were already before the public consciousness
Dawkins’ two-part documentary on behalf of atheism had just been released January of 2006
all under the umbrella of The Root of All Evil
(Note that I found the first of these parts especially useful in courses I taught on apologetics):
Michael wanted nothing to do with the harsh atheism of Dawkins and his fellow horsemen of the atheistic apocalypse
as they also came to be called (Christopher Hitchens of God Is Not Great
it would be inaccurate to characterize Ruse as trying to reconcile science and religion
except in a way that shortchanged religion
In his book Can a Darwinian Be a Christian? (Cambridge
Even the supreme miracle of the resurrection requires no law-breaking return from the dead
or more likely that he really was physically dead but that on and from the third day a group of people
That a psychologist or sociologist might be able to explain all of this by natural laws is totally irrelevant — something of a relief
What counts is that it happened and that it was unexpected and that it mattered
It is from this regeneration of spirit that true Christianity stems
not from some law-defying physiological reversals in the early hours of a Sunday morning
Any but the least traditional Christians would find this dismissal of a real bodily resurrection of Jesus as unacceptable and irreconcilable with Christian orthodoxy
even if the resurrection of Jesus could not be grounded factually
whose childhood experiences with Christianity were quite negative
Michael came from a Quaker background that he regarded as positive
and which I sensed he still at some level wanted to be true.
Ruse has engaged in heated exchanges with new atheists
the pusillanimous appeaser of Hitler at Munich
Jerry Coyne reviewed one of my books (Can a Darwinian be a Christian?) using the Orwellian quote that only an intellectual could believe the nonsense I believe in
Myers has referred to me as a ‘clueless gobshite.’” Ruse said new atheists do the side of science a “grave disservice,” a “disservice to scholarship,” and that “Dawkins in The God Delusion would fail any introductory philosophy or religion course,” and that The God Delusion makes him “ashamed to be an atheist.” Ruse concluded
saying “I am proud to be the focus of the invective of the new atheists
let’s finally get to the funniest incident I recall with Michael
a heaven of eternal bliss compatible with theism and incompatible with atheism
Here is how Michael described heaven: “I would love for heaven to be real
Heaven for me would be a new Mozart opera every night and fish-and-chips during intermission.” Funny
at our podcast interview together with Subboor Ahmad in early 2024
Michael was going to a Mozart opera that night
He wasn’t going to miss it even though he was breathing oxygen through a nasal cannula during the interview and would need the additional oxygen that night at the opera
I found Michael’s vision of heaven amusing but perhaps closer to truth than he might have imagined. In Catholic priest Thomas Dubay’s The Evidential Power of Beauty (a book I used in some of my graduate seminars on theology and science)
Dubay also sings the praises of Mozart as a window into the divine
While it may be hard to imagine that any activity could be continued for all eternity without engendering boredom
the appreciation of beauty—a never ending progression of ever increasing visions of beauty—seems immune to the boredom problem
Michael therefore also made a profound point
The incident with Michael that made the greatest impression on me
and which showed me the depth and kindness of his humanity
occurred at the University of Central Arkansas in the fall of 2003
It was a symposium featuring the two of us
But we also had lots of interactions with students
especially students from the honors college
about thirty honors students were seated at tables in a plush hall
Michael went to each student individually and shook hands
asking with genuine interest about each of them
Another incident that stood out to me from the symposium at the University of Central Arkansas was when Michael
seated in conversation with faculty and students
I don’t recall what prompted Michael to remove his upper-body clothing
but it wasn’t gratuitous and the students loved it
It seems that Michael had a penchant for showing off his chest
and about twenty others (including evolutionists such as David Hull and Richard Dawkins)
sending us several images of himself getting and showing off a newly minted tattoo
I vaguely recall that Michael may have lost or won bet
or somehow had been challenged by his students to get a tattoo of something evolutionarily significant
He chose a classic organism from the Cambrian
the trilobite (one of the first arthropods
Here are the images of Michael getting his trilobite tattoo
showing the ordeal that it was (as evident in the pain on his face) as well as his satisfaction once the ordeal was over
As Michael put it in the email alerting us to his new tattoo: “I now expect my intelligent design friends to have Jesus tattooed on their right arms.” As it is
I never felt obligated to meet that expectation
But I was happy for Michael in the pleasure he took in his tattoo:
If some of my remembrances of Michael seem frivolous
he was also a serious defender of academic freedom and expression
he and I were trying to complete one more project on the controversy between Darwinism and intelligent design
I sensed that this might be his swan song—his usual energy on past projects was not there and it largely fell to me to try to pull this project together
for this project we needed to enlist several Darwinists
I expected with Michael’s extensive rolodex in that world that enlisting the needed Darwinists would be easy
I don’t mean to be cagey about this project
but it still has a chance of coming to light
and I hope it does for my sake and Michael’s as indeed a fitting swan song for all his efforts to promote freedom of thought and expression on the questions that most animated him
I won’t at this moment be divulging information about the precise details of this project
I will share an exchange that Michael had with a prominent Darwinian biologist in trying to enlist this biologist to our project.
I no longer feel the need to keep this exchange secret
I won’t disclose the identity of the biologist in question
my point is to underscore how freedom of thought and expression in the academy are regularly suppressed
and that it takes the courage of a Michael Ruse to stand against such suppression
Here’s how the biologist in question responded to a request to contribute to our project
In the interest of keeping the precise nature of the project as well as the biologist in question confidential
clearly marked with brackets and ellipses:
=====Begin email from biologist to Michael
[Your assistant] wrote me to ask for a contribution to what he said was a project planned by you and William Dembski…
I was curious about the scope of this project
so I wrote to inquire to a set of people who were involved in the Dover trial. These included [omit names of seven prominent opponents of intelligent design]. [All these] who participated in the trial … were dismayed
They individually expressed a range of reasons why this would be a terrible idea
either scientifically (there never was) or polemically with respect to ID in the past 20 years
— The original proponents of ID have mostly either scattered to the winds or have labored in quasi-academic obscurity. (I will not characterize Dembski’s abstract mathematical work of the past decades
other than to offer the view that they have nothing to say about evolution or science.) There still has never been a peer-reviewed scientific publication by an ID proponent. No one could think of “new” issues or aspects of ID that have emerged. What is the definition of a dead horse
— We live in a far greater era of disinformation and fakery than we lived in 20 years ago. If ID was a “Trojan horse” and a construct of smoke and mirrors then
how much easier will it be to gull a substantial portion of the populace now? How will this help the cause of science and science education – or even
if you want to assume your philosopher’s mantle
the cause of explaining legitimate philosophy
conservative Christians are determined to relitigate the ID battle. They are using the same tactics of bringing in persuasive lawyers
and launching advertising campaigns to voters. They are also assaulting textbooks. Ken Miller’s biology text was criticized in Texas for chapters that dealt with Covid-19 (which was alleged by critics not to be a disease)
and the absence of a balanced treatment of ID with evolution. How will your planned publication help with this
apart from helping the ID proponents claim that scientists are taking them seriously
— One of our colleagues remarked: “since 2004
when Debating Design: From Darwin to DNA first appeared
Dembski has repeatedly evinced inappropriate behavior — failing to address pertinent criticism
— that should make anyone leery about participating in an ostensibly scholarly enterprise with him
After twenty years (or more) of not playing nicely with others
he can hardly expect eager cooperation at this stage.” As another pointed out
your past collaborations with Dembski have allowed him to pose as a mainstream academic
which some regard as a debatable claim. Setting aside any abstract mathematical contributions
he has no relevance to any inquiry about evolution or science in general
— The Discovery Institute and its friends would like nothing better than the academic legitimacy that you would collude with in … this pseudo-debate. This may not matter to you
because you may feel that open discussion is of general interest to the public and salutary to its understanding of issues central to human endeavor. If so
that view seems short-sighted. We who sacrificed years of effort to explain
and ultimately counter the pretensions of ID as science
which was instantiated in Judge Jones’s 142-page decision in which not a single sentence validated any of the arguments of the ID proponents
will not thank you for giving comfort to these opponents of science and rational thought
even as their legal and administrative minions redouble their efforts to overturn everything that we accomplished
if for no other reason than for the sake of respect for your colleagues who sacrificed a great deal – professionally
Here is how Michael responded. Note that Michael was a key expert witness in the 1981 Arkansas creation trial (McLean v. Arkansas Board of Education)
which he cites at the end of his email below and notes that it incurred for him also a professional cost
The Dover trial mentioned above was decided in 2005.
=====Begin response from Michael to biologist
Goodness – I don’t think I have ever been solicited/begged by a letter such as yours – I am not a sociologist so I cannot report on the fate of IDT today – new conceptual changes
number of enthusiasts and so forth – what I can say is that a year ago I flew to Krakow in Poland to debate Michael Behe – there were about three hundred in the audience – at least half of whom were either priests or nuns – I estimate there were about five in the audience who agreed with me! I didn’t take offence – nothing personal – philosophers don’t take offence at different conceptual issues – I am not a Thomist
but I have deep respect for St Thomas as a theologian/philosopher
I guess that is why I am not inclined to accede to your earnest pleading – if I were a scientist
it would be one thing – but I am a philosopher and I think it is a moral obligation to take on Dembski and the ideas he endorses/promotes – there are important issues here about the science-religion relationship and it is legitimate for a science to admit to the influence of religion – Dawkins would obviously say “no” – I am not at all sure that Dobzhansky or Fisher would agree – our [project has yet to be completed]
but if I were still teaching – I am 84 and now retired after 55 years in the classroom (in the job beyond my dreams) – I would use it as the focus of a graduate seminar on the science and religion interface — more than teaching it
And that I guess is why you are glad not to be a philosopher and why I could never be other than a philosopher
I am a little offended that the contributions of others are considered pertinent whereas my contributions (and costs) go unmentioned – if you look at the volume I published after Arkansas – But Is It Science
– just see what my fellow philosophers like Larry Laudan said about me — obviously they did not deter me then and they do not deter me now
=====End response from Michael to biologist
This exchange, of course, raises many questions about the legitimacy of intelligent design as a coherent intellectual and scientific position. Addressing such questions is for another day and time — I would urge readers with such questions to start by consulting the second edition of The Design inference
But let me close this remembrance with the following thought: If intelligent design is a legitimate
how could we ever know that if it is suppressed in the way that this biologist urged Michael to abandon his project with me
Michael and I differed sharply on the merits and truth of intelligent design
But he was a valiant defender of freedom of thought and expression
letting inquiry proceed where it will and following evidence to its ultimate destination—however distasteful that might be.

Two men were detained last week in Teton County

said people being apprehended via a “ruse” is not uncommon
Two recent arrests by federal immigration officials in Teton Valley
are raising concerns for some Teton County officials about due process and community trust
Both arrests resulted in deportation proceedings
Harnol Hugo Naves-Rangel and Jonathan Israel Rios-Flores were each contacted via text message by the Teton County misdemeanor probation office and instructed to check in on separate days last week with probation officer Josh Burris
whose office is located inside the Teton County Law Enforcement Center on Main Street in Driggs
Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents intercepted them in the hallway of the building
better known as “ICE,” is responsible for enforcing federal immigration law and has been front-and-center in President Donald Trump’s push to ramp up deportations of people in the country illegally
Rios-Flores was arrested April 21 and Naves-Rangel was taken into custody April 25
Both were initially booked into the Jefferson County
Jail before being transferred to the Nevada Southern Detention Center in Las Vegas
Calling a defendant in for a probation check or other reason and arresting them for an immigration-related crime — commonly referred to as a “ruse” — is a deceptive method ICE uses to locate and arrest individuals
Fabbricatore suspects ICE agents were not interested in the misdemeanor DUI charges
but were targeting the men for overstaying their visas
Using a ruse was not uncommon when he was a regional director
“It seems to me that this kind of activity greatly compromises the goal of probation,” Teton County Idaho Commissioner Michael Whitfield said Monday
addressing the ICE arrests while discussing the probation department in a public meeting
Magistrate Judge Jason Walker agreed in the Monday meeting
calling the notion of coordinated efforts between the probation office and ICE agents “shocking.”
that is outside the scope of the local department’s role in the criminal justice system
While he acknowledged the probation department’s legal authority
the judge said probation is intended to provide rehabilitation after a defendant’s case makes it through the courts
To erode that foundation would be detrimental to the community
has been in flux in recent weeks following the resignation of its director
who previously served as a junior probation staff member
is just a few months into his new role as the adult misdemeanor probation officer after graduating from college last spring
It remains unclear which local official Burris reports to while the county works to fill the vacant director position
Although the probation department operates under the county government
Teton County officials say Burris works closely with law enforcement
told the News&Guide Tuesday that he didn’t understand all the ins and outs of the county departments and couldn’t lend anything more to the wider discussion about probation
Idaho Sheriff Clint Lemieux about the two ICE arrests
Wolfe said the sheriff told him ICE had contacted law enforcement regarding Rios-Flores and Naves-Rangel and in turn
the sheriff’s office coordinated with the probation office to schedule the arrests
An administrative assistant in the probation office said Burris had no comment to the News&Guide
Lemieux did not respond to a request for comment
“It seems to me that this kind of activity greatly compromises the purpose of probation.” —Michael Whitfield
Wolfe said people who are in the United States illegally have reason to be concerned about interactions with law enforcement
he emphasized that the county is not “going out and looking for people,” despite the allegation that probation was catfishing community members
Wolfe acknowledged that the county — including the probation office — does not have a formal policy regarding collaboration with federal agencies
but said he is working to become more informed on the issue
John Faicco of the Teton County Sheriff’s Office in Jackson said the western Idaho county probation office does not coordinate with federal agencies
More than 200 people attended an event hosted by the Boise Mexican consulate on Saturday at Teton High School in Driggs
While the event focused on helping community members with passport and identification needs
an underlying sense of urgency was evident
Members of the Latino community voiced concerns about how they could trust a local government that
“Using power to target and harm the most vulnerable among us is not only wrong
but also deeply unfair,” a member of the Teton Valley Latino community wrote Idaho commissioners after the meeting
the people of the Latinx community; one of the largest minority groups contributing to Idaho’s economy and paying taxes — deserve to be treated with dignity and respect
“I am alarmed that probation officers may be using their authority to set up vulnerable members of our community for deportation,” the email says
“This practice instills fear in those under supervised probation
making them afraid to attend their appointments
They are now faced with an impossible choice: show up and risk immediate arrest and deportation or miss the appointment and face a warrant for violating their probation.”
Naves-Rangel was arrested last July by the Teton County
Idaho Sheriff’s Office for driving under the influence of alcohol
Naves-Rangel agreed to a plea deal with the state and pled guilty to the DUI
He was ordered to serve two years of probation
Family members said he came to the Teton Valley area two years ago on a 6-month work visa
Naves-Rangel was months away from graduating as an architect in Mexico
but chose to work as a painter in a resort area to provide more for his young family
Naves-Rangel did not seek to renew his visa
opting to continue working and providing for his family
Rios-Flores also pled guilty to a DUI in November under a plea agreement from the state
He was sentenced to 18 months of probation and had his driver’s license suspended
Neither men have felony charges on the state or national level

But just like last season, she is back to playing her best tennis in Rouen and is on a five-set win streak. However, Ruse has not played a top 100 opponent this week, and Elina Svitolina would be a significant step up in level

a distinct note of self-assertiveness has found its way into the pronouncements of many African countries
While the underlying mood most certainly dates back to the period before the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022
that it has been boosted by the global diplomatic fallout of the conflict
Hitherto subtly indignant at their perceived disregard by the major powers
these countries welcomed the breach that opened up in the wake of Western attempts to forge a common front against Russia as an opportunity to ventilate long-simmering grievances
Judging by signals across the Sahel, the renewed clamor for “sovereignty” seems all-encompassing. For instance, Mali’s decision last year to drop French
the so-called “language of the colonizer,” as its official language (a status it had enjoyed since the country’s independence in September 1960) and replace it with “thirteen national languages” seems to have been motivated by this newfangled desire for “autonomy,” although this time in the realm of language

Indeed, if Burkina Faso’s junta leader Ibrahim Traore has his way, the region’s CFA franc currency, which he sees as the prime illustration of “monetary imperialism,” will be on the next consignment to the anti-colonial landfill. As he told an interviewer in February last year
By far the greatest indication of these countries’ apparent determination to “break their bonds” and regain their “sovereignty” is their stance on foreign military presence and bases. Last week, Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara confirmed the imminent departure of some six hundred French military personnel from the country
had indicated that French troops numbering three hundred fifty will withdraw from the country
France) will be mandated to shut down its military bases across the country by the end of 2025
a decision later confirmed by Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko
One need not be an expert on Francophone West African history to understand the sources of these countries’ angst against France, nor does one have to fully sympathize with them to see that the one-time colonial overlord has its work cut out for it in the region. The fact that, in recent times, Paris has “increased aid to the continent
begun the return of cultural artefacts stolen during the colonial wars
and reached out beyond the usual inter-government ties to engage younger generations and civil society” indicates its sudden realization that
having found itself on the back foot in the region
the sovereignty rhetoric raises more questions than answers
the underlying implication that these countries were never “sovereign,” meaning that any awareness on their part of their agency is only due somehow to a recent epiphany
it seems to contradict the historical data on the dynamics of the interaction between France and its former (African) colonies
whereby a succession of (military and civilian) leaders sometimes had to act under direct pressure from Paris; and yet
were all too happy to manipulate the latter to take sides in often-bitter contestations with domestic political rivals
and the suggestion that France more or less had its way over their helpless protestations does not seem to stand up to scrutiny
One finds it difficult to believe that France would have maintained military bases in various African countries for so long if these countries simultaneously had no (defense and political) use for them
France could have stood its ground had any of the countries with which it had entered into military agreements insisted that it evacuate
it is odd indeed that the same countries now vigorously asserting their “sovereignty” do not seem to mind signing with Russia and China agreements that are hardly different from the “colonial” treaties that they now accuse France of foisting upon them
If the problem is being under the suzerainty of a foreign power and the solution is breaking free with the aim of attaining “full decolonization,” why trade French “imperialism” for its Russian or Chinese equivalent
how can countries which continue to be dependent on foreign development aid (for example
nearly half of the Nigerien government’s budget is said to derive from various foreign donors) posture about sovereignty
what is sovereignty if you cannot afford to pay your own bills
and how can you insist on holding your head high while holding your hand out
it is not insignificant that some of the most ardent avowers of “full sovereignty” for Africa are certified despots who are increasingly denying common freedoms
detaining without trial opposition journalists and activists who dare to speak out about rising insecurity and inflation
or dare challenge the various juntas for a credible program of return to civilian rule
there are strong grounds to suspect that the clamor for “sovereignty” that we are seeing is less about a true quest for African self-determination and more about creating political distraction for purposes of regime consolidation
Now, there is a serious debate to be had about sovereignty, particularly about how to challenge prevailing narratives on self-determination in a Eurocentric world order, a subject on which, incidentally, many African scholars, notably Cornell political scientist and international relations theorist Siba Grovogui
unimaginative “Pan-Africanism,” has nothing of the nuance and deliberateness of this scholarship
like a desperate gambit to hoard power while distracting attention from core issues of democratic reform

Immigrant rights advocates say at least one person living in Louisiana was arrested this month after being summoned to meet with an ICE officer under false pretenses
raising concerns about the alleged use of "ruse" tactics by the agency
The account of the methods — long a subject of interest for immigrant advocacy groups — comes as anxieties rise amid reports of stepped-up immigration enforcement around the country, including the Gulf South
ACLU of Louisiana's legal director, Nora Ahmed, said their office has confirmed a case in which someone being monitored by ICE's intensive supervision program received a text message asking them to provide documents and meet in early February to transfer to a lower level of supervision.
She said the person was asked to arrive at that meeting early, so they wouldn’t have to wait while a group was processed, and then was arrested on arrival.
"It appears as though ICE lured this individual into custody pursuant to something in law we call a 'ruse,'" or a deception to facilitate arrest, Ahmed said.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by ACLU of Louisiana (@aclu.louisiana)
She said case law shows ruses potentially violate the Fourth Amendment to the Constitution
which guarantees rights pertaining to search and seizure by the government
Ahmed could not share information about the immigrant's identity or whether they were currently detained
including that as far as the ACLU's staff is aware
the person was not notified their status under an ICE monitoring program was being revoked
That triggers a formal process that gives the person the opportunity to respond to the revocation
ICE public affairs officers did not return requests for comment on the case or current "ruse" policies. Past Department of Homeland Security memos and policy manuals published online by advocacy groups
Ruses are "designed to control the time and location of a law enforcement encounter," according to one past Department of Homeland Security handbook
"The result is improved safety for officers and the public by reducing the opportunity for the target to flee."
Immigration advocacy groups, legal scholars and lawsuits have tried to track and flag "ruse" scenarios they say are used by enforcement agents
those can include concocting premises to convince people to interact with ICE officers
such as investigating crimes that didn't happen

said in a statement that ICE agents sometimes use ruses to help them locate someone or gain entry to a home when they do not have permission or a warrant signed by a judge or magistrate
She said ICE uses ruse methods "to deceive and prevent people from knowing that they can invoke their rights," such as the right not to admit officers to a home
Immigration agents also identify themselves as "police" without specifically mentioning that they are investigating immigration issues
"(M)any times the witnesses of raids that involved ruses do not know at the time that it was
ICE that arrested their loved one and not the local police," Blaser said
Ahmed said people often develop relationships with the ICE officer overseeing their supervision case
She said issues arise when immigrants believe they are going to a check-in and "doing the right thing," only to be "sandbagged."
"You don't believe that the system's going to turn on you," she said
Last month, NBC news reported a Venezuelan immigrant in South Florida was detained under seemingly similar circumstances to the Louisiana case
As President Donald Trump's administration intensifies its focus on migrants
the ACLU and many advocacy organizations have recently stressed the importance of immigrants knowing their Constitutional rights
as well as preparing for worst-case scenarios
That includes people without documents making a plan for who will take care of their children should they be detained
so children won't be placed into the foster care system
and filing motions to reopen asylum cases where relevant

2 min readA carefully orchestrated manoeuvre within the Palestinian Authority on Saturday saw the appointment of Hussein al-Sheikh as “Deputy Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) and Vice President of the State of Palestine.”
presented as a significant step toward transition
is in reality a calculated ruse by PA chairman Mahmoud Abbas to project an image of reform to the international community
particularly Western governments and donors
It is a superficial reshuffling of loyalists that entrenches Abbas’s control
sidesteps genuine democratic processes and maintains the status quo of his autocratic rule
a senior distinguished fellow at the Gatestone Institute and a fellow of the Jerusalem Centre for Security and Foreign Affairs (JCFA)
said al-Sheikh’s appointment is nothing short of “musical chairs” and should not be taken seriously
“Why do we assume that this is a new school of thought
This is someone from the young guard representing the old guard,” he said
“The West is again falling for the same mistakes they made in the past,” he added
was framed as a formal elevation to the number two position in the PA leadership hierarchy
this was not a competitive or democratic process
and was swiftly approved by the 16-member PLO Executive Committee
which is stacked with Abbas loyalists and which he himself chairs
al-Sheikh’s appointment was hardly surprising
He has long been regarded as Abbas’s unofficial deputy
wielding significant influence as a key negotiator with Israel and a gatekeeper of PA patronage networks
His formal elevation offers no substantive change in policy
89 years old and in the 20th year of a four-year presidential term
faces mounting pressure at home and abroad
Palestinians are increasingly disillusioned with the PA’s corruption
ineffectiveness and lack of democratic legitimacy
particularly the United States and European Union
which provide critical financial support to the PA
have urged reforms and a clear succession plan to ensure stability in the post-Abbas era
Al-Sheikh is not a reformist or an independent figure; he is one of Abbas’s closest allies
deeply embedded in the PA’s patronage system
As head of the PLO’s General Authority for Civil Affairs
al-Sheikh has been a key interlocutor with Israel on security coordination and a central figure in distributing PA resources
His elevation rewards loyalty rather than competence or public support
signalling that the PA’s priorities remain self-preservation and control
al-Sheikh’s new title is superficial as Abbas retains ultimate authority as PA president and PLO chairman
Al-Sheikh’s role is subordinate and ceremonial unless Abbas chooses to delegate power – an unlikely prospect given his history of centralizing control
The PA leadership remains a closed circle of loyalists recycled through various titles
Al-Sheikh’s elevation is merely the latest iteration
following a pattern whereby Abbas appoints trusted allies to prominent roles but then distances them
This tactic allows Abbas to maintain control while creating the illusion of change
a strategy he has employed for decades to deflect criticism and sustain international support
The appointment was designed to assuage Western concerns about reform and succession
Abbas is pretending to signal that the PA is preparing for a post-Abbas era
Al-Sheikh is a familiar and acceptable figure to the United States and European Union
making him a convenient choice to project continuity
this is a facade: the appointment changes nothing about the PA’s anti-Israel policies
the West should see through this charade and demand real change such as elections
it appears Western governments are once again falling for the Palestinians’ ruse

People of all ages gathered on Liberation Square in Ruse on Sunday to celebrate the Resurrection of Christ together
as this year's Easter coincided for both Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodox faiths
The majority of Bulgarians identify as Eastern Orthodox
while Roman Catholicism is a minority religion
The latter usually celebrate Easter a few days before Orthodox Christians
Christians from both groups have come together
Hundreds of dancers and citizens took part in a folk line dance performed in circles and chains
One of the dancers explained the importance of keeping traditions alive
which is very important to observe every time," he told Euronews
A mother who attended the celebration in Liberation Square with her daughter told Euronews "the atmosphere of this holiday is to be with your family
to make Kozunatsi," which is a traditional sweet bread baked for the occasion
As per Christian Orthodox tradition, families dye eggs on Holy Thursday
children and adults holding the coloured eggs line up in preparation of the playful egg fight
where they will take turns tapping their eggs against each other
Whoever ends with the last unbroken egg is the winner
and is expected to have a year of good fortune and health
black rings on the neck and forehead and large lustrous eyes
the killdeer is difficult to confuse with any other bird in our area
Note how easily it can blend in with the dead grasses
the return of the killdeer and other seasonal wildlife makes the morning commute a bittersweet journey filled with beauty
distraction and the irresistible pull of nature
We have reached that time of year when going to work in the morning becomes more difficult with every passing day
The world is waking up from its winter slumber and more and more items of interest present themselves to be observed and adored
I have a rather lengthy commute to work and the amount of daylight increases each day
I navigate this passage of temptation every day
There are mornings when I feel like my heart will break as I am forced to pilot myself past birds and flowers that sing out to me and beg me to stop and pay attention to them
Such was the case last week when driving past an open hayfield
I saw a familiar form standing at the edge of the road
It was a killdeer (Charadrius vociferus) and it was the first one that I had seen this year
Any birders reading this column will be familiar with the “zing zing” of the heartstrings whenever a migratory bird is seen for the first time in a given year
It is as though you are hosting a party for old friends and you jump for joy whenever the doorbell rings
the birds leave for greener pastures and a sense of melancholy settles over you because you feel left behind
your friends return and bring an unmistakable wave of joy with them
The killdeer is a bit of an odd duck in the sense that it is a member of the avian order Charadriiformes (a.k.a
the killdeer is a member of a group of birds known as plovers
which tend to be found near the ocean coasts
but they are remarkably graceful and they seem to fly effortlessly
With very large eyes and relatively short beaks
The majority of their diet consists of invertebrates like worms
These are found by slowly moving across areas of short grass where the prey items can be seen and spotted
Their preference for such habitats suggests that human activities such as mowing lawns and creating fenced-in pastures for livestock accidentally provide the perfect habitat for them
Killdeer will even follow tractors in agricultural areas in the hopes of finding little edible creatures that are stirred up by the machines
Humans are great at making habitat for killdeer
but things get a little trickier for them when it comes to nesting
Killdeer need to find quiet places where they can lay their eggs on the ground
Further complicating this necessity is the fact that the ground needs to be almost entirely free of vegetation
What the birds look for is a patch of ground where rocks and gravel are right at the surface
allowing them to lay their eggs on the ground without any danger of rainwater puddling and killing the chicks in the eggs
but it needs to be somewhat quiet and definitely free of visits by lawnmowers and other machinery
Parking areas work fairly well and I remember one summer when I was delighted to cross paths with a female killdeer and one of her chicks who were exploring the short grass at the edge of a parking lot at a mall
I’ve also seen killdeer nesting near garages and tool sheds that house winter equipment like snowplows
These are areas that stand idle for most of the summer and the birds can often nest without being noticed
the adults will begin the most extraordinary display of deceit
feigning a broken wing in the hopes of capturing so much of your attention that they lure you away from their eggs or give their young chicks time to slip away while you are mesmerized by the performance
exposing beautiful orange feathers on the rump
Wings will be splayed out and even dragged on the ground as the bird makes quite a racket
Once you have been drawn away a sufficient distance the ruse is abruptly ended and the bird
takes to the air with a call that I compare to quiet laughter
the killdeer have just arrived and they will be busy setting up territories while they wait for the weather to improve
the females will be laying eggs and the parents will take turns incubating them for about a month
The new chicks are even more adorable than baby chickens; little cotton balls with skinny legs and huge eyes
One look at a baby killdeer would simply melt your heart
In less than a month the chicks can fly and then family groups will linger together until it is time to head south for the winter
I think that I will have no trouble encouraging you to get outside
Only the predictably annoying weather will keep you inside
but the days are getting longer and warmer by the minute
I realize that comparing myself to Odysseus in the opening paragraph might have seemed a bit self-aggrandizing
when I started and I was the one with the keyboard

The FBI is warning the public of a scam that targets previous crime victims
.st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Ann Marie Barron | ABarron@siadvance.comThe Federal Bureau of Investigation is warning the public of scammers claiming to be federal agents looking out for their best interest
The criminals are impersonating the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center, known as IC3, to cruelly scam victims who have previously been victims of crime, the April 18 FBI public service announcement said.
the FBI received more than 100 reports of IC3 impersonation scams
Almost all complainants said the scammers claimed to have recovered the victim’s lost funds or offered to assist in recovering funds
the claim is a cruel ruse to victimize again those who have already lost money to scams
most of the individuals targeted in the scam report receiving an email or phone call or being approached via social media with promises to help recover the target’s lost funds or assist in recovering money
the victim is just targeted again and could end up losing even more
the scammers have created female profiles on social media networking sites and join groups for financial fraud victims
representing themselves as fellow financial fraud victims
Scammers then recommend actual victims reach out to male persona
“Quin” claims to have recovered the lost funds
but uses this as a ruse to gain access to their financial information and victimizes them again
Scammers change tactics and aliases but the scheme generally remains the same – the thieves will ask for sensitive information like bank account numbers
Social Security numbers or other personally identifiable information
IC3 will never directly communicate with individuals via phone
So any message claiming to be from a federal agency should raise a red flag
or other assets to people you do not know or have met only online or over the phone
Victims aged 60 or over who need assistance filing an IC3 complaint can contact the DOJ Elder Justice Hotline, 1-833-FRAUD-11 (or 833-372-8311)

(Atlanta News First) — A metro Atlanta police department is under scrutiny after arresting a man for a violent home invasion
despite evidence casting doubt he could have committed the crime
Charles Read has been paralyzed for 25 years
He said he and Katherine Jensen dated at one time
but haven’t had contact with each other for 20 years
But according to a June 15, 2024, complaint, Jensen told College Park, Georgia, police that Read broke into her home
saying it’s not physically possible for him to do what she claimed he did
“She said I kicked in the door,” Read explained
“I’m in a wheelchair and have been for 25 years.”
Body camera footage shows Katherine telling police his name and date of birth
describing him as medium height and wearing all black
“She never mentioned he was in a wheelchair,” said Andrew Fleischman
especially if they’re running away on foot.”
He said College Park officers never called
or verified Jensen’s claims before charging him with aggravated assault
Read said he was at a dinner party with friends the night of the alleged incident
had no idea there was a warrant for his arrest
He only learned of it when the federal government alerted him during a passport renewal process
Read then contacted College Park Police officer Markenley Bolette - who originally responded to Jensen’s home - and agreed to meet at the police department this past March
“I essentially surrendered myself because I was that innocent,” Read said
he was questioned and then arrested in the lobby
Bolette is seen on body camera video placing handcuffs on Read despite his protests it could cause him to fall
“[Officers] literally sat there,” Read said
“They just watched me writhe on the ground.”
It’s an obvious attempt not to go to jail.” But another officer pushed back: “You may want to call the district attorney’s office
Body camera video later showed Bolette acknowledging doubts about Jensen’s story
“Now it’s looking like she made a false report,” he said on camera
Records obtained by Atlanta News First Investigates show Jensen was arrested in 2023 for a different case, by Newnan Police
information Fleishman said was available in a statewide database
but never mentioned in the College Park incident report
“I’ve never seen a case where somebody was so clearly innocent
and it would take so little work to establish it
and nobody was willing to do the work,” Fleischman said
In an email sent to a College Park detective this week
“My mental state and physical trauma in that moment worked to confuse me..
please contact me… so I can edit the information in the report and clear the name of an innocent man.”
Jensen has not been arrested for filing a false report in Read’s case
Fleischman said a Fulton County district attorney’s representative has indicated the charges against Read will be dropped
Read said the College Park Police Department has not apologized for the incident
“Not a single bit; I haven’t heard a word from them,” he said
“We’ve been trying to get into communication with them repeatedly
Jensen did not respond to requests for comment
but her mother said Jensen now acknowledges Read did not attack her
The City of College Park is currently looking into this matter with care and consideration
We understand the importance of resolving this situation and appreciate your patience as we conduct a thorough investigation
A representative from the City of College Park responded saying they are “conducting a thorough investigation.”
a representative from College Park confirmed the district attorney has dropped the charges against Read

Really stretching the definitions of words to produce this headline
The Kansas City Royals could not muster any offense against Joe Ryan and the Minnesota Twins as they were defeated 4-0 tonight at Kauffman Stadium
Seth Lugo allowed a couple baserunners but otherwise got through Minnesota’s order for the first time without incident
Maikel Garcia laced a single in the third inning to put a number in the hit column
but they were deprived of a rally after Kyle Isbel grounded out and Jonathan India was denied a hit on a great diving stop down the third base line by Willi Castro
walking Carlos Correa and Trevor Larnach consecutively with one out
He snared a comebacker off the bat of Ty France to get the second out
but then Edouard Julien ripped a single to right to score Correa
Further damage was averted thanks to a heads-up play by Hunter Renfroe — noticing Larnach taking a wide turn around second base
Kansas City had a chance to respond immediately when Bobby Witt Jr
got beat by a sweeper but managed to get just enough of it to poke it through the right side of the infield and hustle to second for a double
Perez swung and lined it into center field
Harrison Bader ranged into the gap and caught it as Witt
turned around to try to get back to second
He was unsuccessful as Bader made a strong throw to second to double him off
The Royals would get just two baserunners the rest of the game and neither would advance past first base
That 1-0 lead the Twins had would have stood up but they did score a few more
They got a two out rally going against Lugo in the sixth for another run as well as solo homers by Matt Wallner and France
Joe Ryan didn’t totally dominate — he only had four strikeouts and gave up plenty of hard contact
Balls hit in the air by Royals in this game mostly found their way into a Twin’s glove
Teams don’t win many games in which they only get four baserunners
They will try again for the series victory tomorrow afternoon at Kauffman Stadium

Department of Government Efficiency head says he wants to test whether federal employees are ‘capable of replying to an email’
I would like to be emailed about offers, events and updates from The Independent. Read our Privacy notice
Elon Musk said that blanket emails sent to federal employees asking for a response about their weekly accomplishments or risk termination was a test to see if they “had a pulse.”
Less than 24 hours before the deadline, Musk hinted that the emails were simply a ruse to ensure federal employees were “capable of responding” to his correspondence
In the early hours of Monday morning, Musk replied to American venture capitalist Garry Tan on X after he shared a post claiming that DOGE wouldn’t be capable of reading all of the federal workers’ responses
calling the initiative “stupid” and “performance art.”
“Most people don’t understand LLMs have changed the nature of management already
and this will be a bit of a shock to people,” Tan tweeted on Sunday night
speaking of large language models: a type of machine learning model designed for processing large data sets of text
Musk responded that LLMs would not be needed for his task
“This was basically a check to see if the employee had a pulse and was capable of replying to an email,” Musk said
Lot of people in for a rude awakening and strong dose of reality
Musk also referred to the emails as a “very basic pulse check.” That evening
Musk added that a response was indicative that employees have “two working neurons.”
employees at several agencies — including the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — had received the emails
an OPM spokesperson told The Independent that “agencies will determine any next steps” after employees respond
“As part of the Trump Administration's commitment to an efficient and accountable federal workforce
OPM is asking employees to provide a brief summary of what they did last week by the end of Monday
CC’ing their manager,” the spokesperson said
A rift emerged on Sunday evening between Trump’s agency heads and Musk after leaders at the FBI
Department of Homeland Security and Department of Energy instructed staff not to reply to the OPM’s email
including at the Department of Health and Human Services
instructed workers to comply with the request to send a list of five accomplishments from the past week to a generic government email address
While others simply told their staff to wait until Monday — and not to reply to the note before then
“EXTREMELY troubling that some parts of government think this is TOO MUCH!!” Musk tweeted on Sunday
Senior officials worked to provide employees guidance on how they should proceed, including freshly confirmed FBI Director Kash Patel urging employees to “pause responses.”
The emails thrust the Defense Department into chaos over the weekend as they tried to determine what to tell employees about how to respond, multiple senior officials told CNN.

Lake and McHenry County Scanner
Prosecutors say a crew, linked to numerous burglaries in the Chicago suburbs, stole $180,000 in proceeds while distracting a homeowner and burglarizing his Lake Zurich home.
Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Colleen McConnell said a homeowner in Lake Zurich called 911 around 2:40 p.m. on March 23, 2023, to report a residential burglary.
The Lake Zurich Police Department responded and learned the homeowner answered a knock at his home’s door.
The 73-year-old homeowner reported a Hispanic male wearing a reflective vest and a mask was at the door, McConnell said.
The suspect informed the homeowner that he was contracted by the Village of Lake Zurich to clear trees and brush next to his house.
McConnell said the homeowner left his house and followed the suspect to see the supposed area needing to be cleared.
The suspect communicated via radio in another language during the interaction.
The suspect left after five minutes and claimed he had to go pick up his employees.
The homeowner returned to his home and found a safe in his home was missing, McConnell said.
The estimated value of the missing jewelry, watches and cash was just over $180,000. Important documents, including passports, were also in the safe.
Surveillance video from a neighbor showed two suspects entering the victim’s home and exiting while loading something into a vehicle, McConnell said.
A bulletin was issued across the state to other law enforcement agencies about the incident.
Police departments in Skokie, Lincolnshire, Glencoe, Buffalo Grove, Lake Villa, McHenry, Wauconda, Dixon and Bartlett responded to the bulletin or issued their own reporting similar circumstances.
McConnell said those all referenced a Ford Edge SUV, which matched the Lake Zurich burglary suspect vehicle.
The North Regional Major Crimes Task Force arrested Lawrence Miller, 31, of Arlington Heights; Sam Mason, 28, of Arlington Heights; and Christopher Nicholas, 38, of Chicago, on April 11, 2023, at Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg.
Miller, Mason and Nicholas were inside the Ford Edge SUV.
The three were charged in connection with an April 11, 2023, burglary that occurred at an elderly couple’s residence in Naperville where the suspects used a contaminated water ruse to gain entry to the home and steal $6,000 in jewelry, prosecutors said.
The victim in the Lake Zurich burglary identified Miller as the suspect who he believed lured him outside his home.
“The defendant lured [the victim] out of his home while his two co-defendants entered the home and took several belongings,” McConnell said.
“He knew someone was home yet he still burglarized the home. This defendant had no concern for the safety of his victims and has done this similar act in several towns around Lake County,” she added.
Miller was charged in Lake County in February 2024 with one count of residential burglary and one count of theft over $100,000. Court records do not indicate that Mason or Nicholas have been charged in the Lake Zurich burglary.
Miller has a prior criminal history of committing residential burglaries in Illinois.
Court records show Miller was released from a three-year and six-month sentence in prison for the 2023 Naperville burglary in October 2024.
Miller was taken into the custody of the Lake County Jail on the warrant for the Lake Zurich case last month.
The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office filed a petition to detain him pending trial and Lake County Judge Michael Nerheim granted the petition following a detention hearing.
Miller is scheduled to appear in court again on February 18 for an arraignment hearing.

“Trump wants to get rid of DEI,” Abdul-Jabbar said on Tuesday while speaking at the Dodgers’ celebration of Robinson
“And I think it’s just a ruse to discriminate
to let everybody in the country know what’s important
They also tried to get rid of Harriet Tubman
But you have to take that into consideration when we think about what’s going on today.”
who grew up listening to the Dodgers of Robinson and Roy Campanella on the radio and considered Robinson a mentor
pointed to the decision as part of an ongoing issue
“Jackie had an idea of what we had to confront,” Abdul-Jabbar said
And it certainly makes people respect us as a country when they see that there is some tension there
and good people are trying to do the right thing.”
spoke at Dodger Stadium as part of Major League Baseball’s annual celebration of the day that Robinson made his debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947
Seated in front of a statue of Robinson while donning the star’s jersey and a stitched blue Brooklyn cap with No
Abdul-Jabbar spoke of his fandom and admiration for the Hall of Famer
The Dodgers themselves have received criticism during the last month for their handling of Robinson’s legacy in the wake of the Trump administration’s actions
The club was largely silent in the wake of the webpage’s brief removal
The reigning World Series champions accepted an invitation to the White House and were received by Trump last week in Washington
where they repeatedly cited longstanding baseball tradition
Every member of the team’s traveling party attended
shortstop Mookie Betts and utility man Kiké Hernández
each of whom has either been publicly critical of Trump or declined to visit the White House during his first term
Eight days after presenting Trump with a No
“I don’t personally view it as talking out of both sides of our mouth,” Roberts said Tuesday
But I do think that supporting our country
I just believe in doing things the right way and I think people are going to have their opinions on what we did last week
but I do know that we all stand unified and we all have different stories and backgrounds and economic
But I was proud that we all stood together.”
Betts stressed his decision was not political when he made it public
highlighting his unique position in the Dodgers’ clubhouse
“Being Black in America in a situation like this
it’s a tough spot to be in,” Betts said then
Nobody else in this clubhouse has to go through a decision like this
That set the background for Tuesday’s celebration
Abdul-Jabbar served as the headliner in what has become a tradition at Dodger Stadium
with the Dodgers and Colorado Rockies gathering in front of Robinson’s statue in the center field plaza for a 15-minute remembrance
The Dodgers wore caps with the Brooklyn “B” logo in front and Robinson’s signature inscribed on the underside of the bill
as well as scholars from the Jackie Robinson Foundation were in attendance
Abdul-Jabbar shared a story featured prominently in the article that had been wiped from the DOD site — the tale of Robinson refusing to move seats to the back of an Army bus during his time in the military in 1944
The incident led to Robinson being court-martialed
“The officer in charge of the base court-martialed Jackie,” Abdul-Jabbar said
I think that that was an important incident
because if Jackie hadn’t survived World War II
Roberts spent nearly all of his 12-minute pregame session with members of the media discussing Robinson
DEI and his own status as one of three Black managers in the major leagues
“I think he would say we need to do better,” Roberts said
“This country needs a wake-up call,” Roberts said
“I kind of touched on it a little bit (during the remembrance)
It’s Jackie Robinson’s day for breaking the color barrier
but this is like an everyday sort of mindset
“I think (we need) a wake-up call into the sacrifice
To continue to persevere for the greater good … I do think that having a mind of looking beyond is powerful
he just figured it out much earlier than most people.”

Ruse Brewing celebrates their 6th anniversary on Saturday
July 13th at their southeast Portland taproom and brewery
This year there will be 4 different anniversary beers
a special pizza from Ruse Crust Collective
but Ruse actually got started 2 years before that
Before finding their homebase in the Iron Fireman Collective building in SE Portland
the Ruse beers were made out of an alternating proprietorship arrangement at Culmination Brewing
Back then prior to 2018 the Ruse beers were primarily mixed culture barrel aged/fruited beers as well as heavy dry-hop driven hazys and West Coasts
“At that point we were making about 10% of what we currently produce,” says Ruse co-founder Devin Benware
“All of this beer was sold around Portland and a few other accounts outside the metro
Building those relationships around Oregon in the first couple years was instrumental to our success when we opened our spot in 2018
We are super proud to still supply fresh beer to those original accounts because without them
Today Ruse Brewing is expecting to produce between 1,800 to 2,000 barrels of beer per year
which is just about maxed out for the fairly small brewery and is a happy and safe spot for founders Shaun Kalis and Benware
Their full shift into both modern American IPA
and West Coast IPA has done wonders for the business
most of their fans today don’t even know of their past as more of a contemporary farmhouse brewery
In the past year they’ve doubled down on their use of hop products to try intensify their hoppy beers
They have also doubled their lager production and are consistently tweaking them to make them stylistically appropriate
Kalis and Benware were both professional brewers coming from restaurant brewpubs before becoming first time business owners opening Ruse Brewing
These days their focus is pulled in numerous directions running the business and two locations
In _____ Ruse opened the ‘Crust Collective’ on the Vancouver Waterfront
The concept has now made its way to the SE Portland location where the pies are available on weekends only
The aspect of running a kitchen has definitely changed their perspective on the business and what kind of beers they make
“Before we opened Crust we didn’t realized how fun it would be to get creative on something other than beer
Chef Dino and his team have been doing an amazing job nailing the classic Detroit style pies as well as avant-garde creations with thoughtful
It’s a similar approach that we apply to our brews,” says Benware
Much of the current Ruse Brewing beer output is credited to brewers Luc and Cody
who Benware says are continuing to advance the brewing by honing in on the classics and pushing the boundaries on the hoppy stuff
“Recipe creation percolates through the 4 of us but these guys keep the beer flowing and the tanks filled
we help out where we can but they are the glue of the brewery,” he says

The ultimate resources for professionals working on North Korea
A striking image commonly seen in North Korean military propaganda shows a U.S
aircraft carrier disappearing into a wreath of flames
symbolizing the regime’s long standing obsession with countering the formidable power of U.S
Navy has historically been an obvious concern to the North’s military planners
with exercises often revolving around taking on carrier groups using submarines or jet aircraft
But these ambitions were clouded by a mix of wishful thinking and unrealistic expectations — not only are carrier groups among the hardest
