Joe Moore
he has just ended a pretty big goal drought
scoring his first goal in over two years at club level
The former Premier League ace scored six minutes from time to help seal a 2-0 victory for NK Tabor Sezana over Triglav Kranj - marking his first goal in Slovenia and his first in professional football since February 19
It’s been quite the career for the former West Brom starlet who, ten years on from his infamous transfer saga with Tottenham Hotspur
Based in a small town near the Slovenian border with north-eastern Italy
the 31-year-old competes in the Slovenian Second Football League after zig-zagging between clubs in England and wider Europe
Having played for England at Under-21 level, Berahino was tipped for a senior Three Lions call-up after his impressive breakthrough at the Hawthorns
The player attempted to force through the move, leading to a falling out with manager Tony Pulis and the club’s chairman.
He was dumped out of the first-team for over a month. Although he eventually reconciled with the boss, Berahino’s form was severely affected and ended his spell with the club amid a goal drought which totaled 913 days.
During that time period - February 2016 to August 2018 - he left West Brom to join Stoke.
He served a six-week ban for failing a drugs test in 2017
although he claimed it was due to his drink being spiked
He was later arrested for drink-driving in 2019 and was suspended without pay by the Potters
Years later, he would come to blows with a former teammate - England defender Glen Johnson - who launched an extraordinary attack over his conduct at the Bet 365 Stadium during an interview with talkSPORT
there was a high point in his career in the same year as he captained the country of his birth - Burundi - the in 2019 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Egypt
Moves to Belgian clubs Zulte Waregem and Charleroi followed before a return to English football in 2021 with Sheffield Wednesday
He was released after just one season in League One and then sealed a move to Cypriot club AEL Limassol
where he started in only 16 of his 44 games for the side
Then came a move to the second tier of Indian football with Rajasthan United
Club officials say Berahino was sidelined with an injury he suffered in an unspecified ‘accident’
His contract was terminated and he swiftly returned to European football
which brings us back to his goal drought - this time ending a run of 789 days without finding the back of the net
It was his first strike since joining NK Tabor Sezana at the beginning of March
and reports from local media say he has been making a marked improvement - although he is yet to start a match for the second tier side
Berahino recently opened up on his career regrets and explained how his lack of support system around him affected his life on and off the pitch
"I one hundred percent have career regrets,” he told SportsBoom
I would have listened more to the people around me
Lack of a support system to guide me didn't help my case as well
"Footballers should shun the culture of cutting through the corners
Young players should be encouraged to trust the process and build their careers day by day."
Berahino also explained why his spell in India didn’t work out
and how his international ambitions were behind his latest move - as he hopes this could be a turning point
"I would have loved to play football in India and serve Rajasthan well,” he said
I say this with a lot of respect for India and their people
but my wife and kids could not stay."
The Burundi international added: "Once you hit 30
it is difficult to return to the top level
especially if you have been out of touch for some time
training hard with a club that understands me well
The goal is to captain my national team again and help qualify for the AFCON
“I would love to wear the Burundian kit again and take part in World Cup qualifiers."

The railway station in the Slovenian town of Sežana is nowadays a sleepy outpost
The most exotic departure of the day is the early-afternoon Eurocity train that rumbles east along the main line to Ljubljana
but closer to hand is a remarkable rural railway which deserves to be far better known
And the good news is that train fares in Slovenia were reduced in August
Our journey follows a railway that runs north for 80 miles from Sežana through magnificent scenery to Jesenice in Slovenia’s north-west corner
With the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869
the Adriatic port of Trieste became a key asset in expanding the Austro-Hungarian empire’s maritime trade
Existing rail links between Trieste and central Europe were
so Habsburg planners got busy devising new railways from Trieste
The idea of traversing the Julian Alps was ridiculed in some quarters and there were squabbles over preferred routes
so it was not until 1906 that the first trains ran on the line from the coast to Jesenice
By then the fragile bonds that held the Habsburg dynasty together were already weakening and in just a dozen years
the entire Austro-Hungarian Empire was gone
The expensive railway through the Julian Alps remains as a legacy of Habsburg ambition
and these days it offers a wonderful excursion through some of the finest scenery in the eastern Alps
it is often referred as the Bohinjska proga (Bohinj railway)

The exhibition Technology vs Fire was inaugurated yesterday in Kosovel Culture House in Sežana
Jointly organised by the Slovenian Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) and the European Patent Office (EPO)
immersive exhibition is open to the public until 21 April 2024
This is the second firefighting exhibition in a series designed to be displayed throughout Europe
with each version featuring local information and experts
The first exhibition in the series was on show last month in Athens
"The exhibition offers a glimpse into the pervasive presence of intellectual property in our daily lives
particularly in critical domains like fire safety
We anticipate that it will shed light on the invaluable nature of innovation and underscore the imperative of safeguarding it for the common good
Our aspiration is that all attendees will depart with a heightened appreciation for innovation's role in enhancing safety and environmental welfare."
patent examiner Gregor Zupancic spoke on behalf of the EPO and emphasised the role of technology and human ingenuity in tackling the threat of fires
"In the firefighting field where every second counts
we’re seeing dynamic developments in technology coming together at critical points – from prevention and protection
It’s clear that from the flames of disaster lie the embers of technological and human resilience
This is what this exhibition is all about."
The opening remarks were followed by a brief presentation of the exhibition and an engaging panel discussion by local experts who had contributed to its creation
a showcase of the heroic response to Slovenia's 2022 wildfire in was presented to Mr Zupancic by firefighting officials in the presence of the Mayor of Sežana
The threat posed by forest fires to ecosystems
human life and the economy is substantial. However
the capacity of human ingenuity offers a beacon of hope
Technology vs Fire provides an interactive experience highlighting the technology and innovation that protect the lives of firefighters
help to restore natural habitats and pave the way for a safer
Slovenia has been especially hard hit by the recent increase in wildfires across Europe as a result of climate change
In 2022 the country experienced the largest wildfire in its history
which burned an area nearly nine times the size of Ljubljana’s city centre.
firefighters and satellite experts provide unique insights on modern firefighting and life-saving technologies along with testimonies from those who fought the 2022 wildfire
the interviews will also be published on EPO social media channels to inspire the public and the next generation of inventors.
In presenting the vital role of technology and innovation in the fight against wildfires
the exhibition draws information from the EPO’s firefighting platform
which was released last year in collaboration with experts from the national intellectual property offices of France
This platform provides ready-made smart searches to support inventors
scientists and engineers in accessing and advancing technical knowledge for fighting wildfires
the smart searches help users navigate in excess of 150 million documents that the database makes available to the public.

It was a moped and motorcycle factory based in Koper
The name itself is an acronym for Tovarna Motorjev Sežana
with Sežana being the name of the town where it was originally meant to be built
The company lasted from the 1950s all the way through to the 2010s
with the Koper factory finally closing its doors in late 2012.
these stalwart steel machines helped huge numbers of people get around
Moped enthusiasts still have soft spots in their hearts for Tomos Colibri T12s today—sometimes modified

This channel restores a large number of things
from rusty bread slicers to rusty Lamborghinis—and the main factor in common seems to be that everything this channel tackles is in pretty sorry shape when they get their hands on it.
spraying lubricant on rusted and stuck nuts and bolts
then loosening them and taking the bike apart bit by bit
he does have to whip out the grinder and cut off some particularly stubborn bolts that won’t come unstuck.
it seems that this particular T12’s rust is mostly of the surface variety—not full-on giant holes that need to be patched in some way
The inside of the fuel tank needs the rust removed
which is a little more involved—but at least it’s a solid tank
and not one with more holes than Swiss cheese.
there’s only one part of the body where the guy ends up using a little filler to smooth out some roughness before priming and painting
That’s one small section of the top of the tank

the finished bike looks a whole lot more inviting than the sad heap that came into the workshop

thrashing NK Tabor Sezana 8-0 with seven different goalscorers – including two own goals
who inflicted a 6-1 defeat on Olimpija back in October but are currently seventh in the 10-team league and 26 points behind Riera’s side
It is a remarkable start to life as a manager from a player who spent two years with Liverpool between 2008 and 2010
making 56 appearances before departing in acrimonious circumstances after public criticism of Rafa Benitez
In an interview with The Athletic in September
Riera expressed regret at the manner of his exit
insisting he now takes a different approach with his players
“It was total frustration on my part
but it was nothing against Rafa,” he said
“You don’t have to like the decisions
‘do you really think I’d do something against the group
Riera is rightly receiving praise for his input at Olimpija so far, with Total Football Analysis noting the influence of compatriot Pep Guardiola on his system at the Slovenian club.
There are still 16 games to play in the PrvaLiga, but the club from the capital are undoubtedly favourites to win the league.
If they do so come May, it would be Olimpija’s first title since 2017/18 and only the third in the top flight through their short, 18-year history.
Their last trophy was the Pokal Slovenije in 2020/21, with a last-16 tie against NK Nafta 1903 still to come in March as Riera and his players eye a potential double.
As a player, Riera was a three-time league winner, twice with Galatasaray and once with Olympiakos, while he also lifted the Turkish Super Cup with Galatasaray and the Copa del Rey with Real Mallorca.
But guiding Olimpija to the title in his first season as a manager, after the controversy surrounding those early days in charge, may just top the lot.
