Hrastnik and Trbovlje, municipalities located in Zasavje, one of the two Slovenian coal regions
hosted the Trbovlje coal power plant and Trbovlje-Hrastnik coal mine
The two facilities have been closed and there is now the Prapretno photovoltaic plant
The company earlier said it would grow the facility to 13 MW
but the second phase envisages the installation of solar panels of 6.8 MW
A battery storage unit of up to 7 MW will be added to increase flexibility and to operate the plant directly
The added part is expected to become operational in October 2025
Štokelj: The location in Zasavje region offers a number of opportunities
The company’s management and the mayors of the municipalities of Trbovlje and Hrastnik have signed an agreement on cooperation in renewable energy projects
HSE commited to sell them 10% of the electricity
The agreement is an example of good practice and cooperation between the investor and the local community in the implementation of a renewable energy project
HSE CEO Tomaž Štokelj said the its focuses on the potential of renewable energy sources in its development and primarily on solar
hydropower and wind together with green energy solutions for end-users
“The energy location in Zasavje region offers a number of opportunities to realise our vision of being a leader in Slovenia’s green transition
which is also linked to the national decarbonisation strategy,” he stated
According to HSE’s Chief Operating Officer Uroš Podobnik
but fair and constructive interlocutors in the local spatial planning process
“I believe that today’s signing of the agreement is a great step forward in our constructive cooperation and joint successful implementation of a number of energy projects in Zasavje region,” he added
The most important projects, in his words, are for hydropower plants on the Sava river – Suhadol, Trbovlje and Renke
The investments will be discussed in spring 2025
Trbovlje Mayor Zoran Poznič said the agreement with HSE brings significant savings for the municipality
It also validates the local authority’s plan to install solar power systems on all public buildings
one of the key tasks for municipalities in Slovenia is to reduce fixed costs

Slovenia-based multinational company Dewesoft announced its plans last week to build a new hi-tech park in the central Slovenian town of Trbovlje
The City of Acrobats technology park will be a place for joint services and the production of physical products
This will be a joint project of Dewesoft and the entrepreneurial accelerator Katapult
Head of Dewesoft Jure Knez and mayor of Trbovlje Jasna Gabric signed a letter of intent on the construction of the park
The 40,000 sqm building will open 300-500 quality jobs in five years after construction and up to 1,000 jobs within 10 years
The consolidated annual turnover of companies in the City of Acrobats is estimated at €60mn
Slovenian Minister of Economic Development and Technology Matjaz Han
“The main purpose of the City of Acrobats is to revive the economic development of the entire Zasava region
which will also have a tremendous impact on the economic development of the entire country,” Han said in the statement
It was noted that the lack of space is already hindering the rapid growth of both Dewesoft and Katapult
and in a few years they will urgently need additional space capacities
“The City of Acrobats will provide this space
and the area of Lakonac in Trbovlje is one of the few possible locations that meet all the criteria for the construction of such a tech-park,” the statement said
Dewesoft develops highly innovative measuring instruments
It was founded in 2000 and its headquartered in Trbovlje
Dewesoft has 17 subsidiaries which are located all over the world.
Katapult is a business accelerator that supports startup companies

located on the former Trbovlje-Hrastnik open-cast coal mine

Slovenian firm Rudis has commissioned its 1.5 MW solar power plant Blate
which will produce 1.7 GWh of electricity annually
it will be enough to supply 400 households
The photovoltaic plant is built at the site of the former coal mine and tailings dump in the Trbovlje-Hrastnik complex
The plant is equipped with 2,600 monocrystalline panels with a rated power of 600 W and 13 diverters
Blate is the second solar power plant built on degraded land on the surface mine Trbovlje-Hrastnik. State-owned Holding Slovenske elektrarne-HSE opened the 3 MW Prapretno solar power plant in April this year
The Blate plant is the second power plant connected to the electricity distribution network in the municipality of Hrastnik in the Zasavska region
“We have almost 5 MW of new solar panels in Hrastnik
but we must not neglect the few private houses that have joined
I am convinced that Hrastnik did the most in the field of renewable electricity sources in Slovenia
“Radio Television of Slovenia quoted Hrastnik Mayor Marko Funkl as saying
The degraded land of the former coal mine of approximately 6,500 square meters in the Zasavje region got a new purpose
but we worked on concrete foundations for the substructure
which required more time and additional financial resources,” said the project director at Rudis Samo Kreže
The electricity produced will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 835 tonnes per year
All produced energy will be transmitted to Slovenia’s electricity distribution network
The project was co-financed by the European Union from the Cohesion Fund and the Republic of Slovenia. The state is implementing the rehabilitation of the former coal mine Trbovlje-Hrastnik and supporting projects to transform the local economy in the Zasavje region and the Savinjsko-Saleški region

The Government of Slovenia said it agreed to grant a concession to Holding Slovenske elektrarne (HSE) for the use of water within the plan to install of an array of hydropower plants in the middle course of the Sava river in the country
The statement adds the spatial plans for hydroelectric facilities Renke, Trbovlje and Suhadol, the last ones in the cascade
the section would cost more than EUR 350 million
includes projects for hydropower plants Ponoviče
The last four locations are in or near Slovenia’s capital
The three planned hydropower projects may cost over EUR 350 million and HSE targets 2030 for completion
The decree stipulates that the City of Ljubljana and the Municipality of Medvode would split the payments with the state
The local authority in Dol pri Ljubljani is getting 60%
Zagorje ob Savi and Hrastnik are entitled to 70% of the funds
The government also drafted the agreement on the implementation for the use of water for electricity production for the last five downstream municipalities. However, the documents aren’t the final approval for installing the three hydroelectric systems as it depends on further research and assessments
Total potential energy output is 1.1 TWh per year
according to the Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning
The number and exact location of the hydropower plants and the water rights are yet to be regulated
and another six in the lower part of the Sava in Slovenia
Hidroelektrarne na Spodnji Savi (HESS) installed HPP Brežice near the border with Croatia in 2017. Its capacity is 47.4 MW. The subsidiary of state-owned GEN Group is also preparing to build the 28 MW Mokrice system, the last one in the row
HSE earlier said it may finish the three hydropower plants in the middle part of the river’s course by 2030
The government-owned utility noted it has the concession for energy use between Medvode and Zidani Most
The area includes another hydropower project upstream from Ljubljana

to rejecting Arsenal and now his country’s biggest hope - how Benjamin Sesko became one of Europe’s most-wanted
Sport | Football
Speak to those who know Benjamin Sesko best and they will tell you his meteoric rise is no surprise
Youth coaches in Slovenia always thought he was destined for the top and
the striker is already among the most-wanted in Europe
Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United were all interested in signing Sesko this summer, but he decided to continue his development at RB Leipzig and sign a new contract with them
Tuesday night gives Sesko the chance to show what all the fuss is about as Slovenia take on England
After drawing their first two games, Slovenia need a win to guarantee a place in the knockout stages of Euro 2024 and they are relying on Sesko to help them cause a major upset.
The striker was Slovenia’s top scorer in qualifying, while he also finished the season with a goal in each of his last seven Bundesliga games. Sesko is yet to get off the mark at this Euros, but there have been flashes of the talent that got Europe’s big clubs chasing him.
Twice in Slovenia’s opening game with Denmark, the striker was inches from scoring a contender for goal of the tournament with long-range strikes from outside the box.
Along with his height, Sesko’s shooting was one of the attributes that made him stand out from the rest as a youngster.
Rok Zorko, who worked with Sesko between the ages of 13 to 15 at Slovenia side NK Krsko Posavje, recalls the striker’s shot being so powerful he once scored from kick-off.
Supernaturally fast, an even better shot... he was a born winner and shooter.
Before joining Krsko, Sesko had played in defence, midfield and even occasionally as a goalkeeper - but the club quickly decided he was a striker. In two years with them, he scored more than 100 goals.
“Where else can you play a boy who is supernaturally fast, has excellent individual technique, an even better shot and an exceptional jump,” Zorko tells Standard Sport. “He was always the striker. He was a born winner and shooter.”

Those at NK Rudar Trbovlje, where Sesko spent a year playing for their Under-11 side, tell similar stories and even a decade on his prowess in front of goal is still spoken about.
“He was taller than other players, also very fast and with great balance for his height,” David Buovski, a board member of NK Rudar Trbovlje, tells Standard Sport.
“His shooting was also amazing, in youth games he shot from great distances as soon as he saw his opportunity and often scored. You could see very quickly that he was something special.”
Talent is one thing, but crucially a young Sesko showed the attitude to go with it.
Buovski remembers him as a “real sports addict” and, given Sesko’s height, it is no surprise to learn he was a keen basketball player growing up.
When he wasn’t playing football, Sesko often spent evenings playing basketball at his local sports club in his hometown of Radece, sometimes just practicing shooting on his own, and he now has a hoop in the garden of his house in Leipzig.
Sesko began his career playing for Radece, where he swiftly became the star of the team and talk of the town.
“He also played other positions [as well as striker], mostly in the midfield,” Jernej Ceh, Sesko’s first coach, tells Standard Sport. “When things didn’t go according to plan, he took matters into his own hands and turned the game around.”
Sesko stays in touch with those at Radece, even returning two years ago to coach a training session.
When he was 10, however, he joined NK Rudar Trbovlje and the coaches would drive two hours each way just to bring him to training such was their desire to work with a player with his talent.
“Beni never complained and eventually he started coming to Trbovlje by train even though he was still very young - 11 years old,” says Buovski. “Trbovlje is an old coal mining town and the mentality here is pretty similar to some English industrial towns.
“So Beni got a lot of ‘tough love’ as we are known to be a bit rough around the edges sometimes.
“But he coped with it wonderfully, he was never a ‘primadonna’ when a coach, maybe in a rough style, would tell him that he needs to do better in certain areas. And it made him an even better player, I think.”
Sesko is remembered as a calm and grounded player throughout his youth career - and that mindset has stuck with him now. Indeed, Meditation and yoga are part of his training regime at Leipzig.
“If someone showed at an early age that he could be a great professional footballer, it was Beni,” says Buovski. “His talent was so great that something would really have to go wrong that he would not achieve his goals, if he stuck with it.
“So yes, it was obvious that he can become a great footballer. It was obvious even to someone who does not watch football daily. He was too good.”

The Trbovlje Chimney towers 360m into the Slovenian sky. It's the tallest in Europe and climbers Janja Garnbret and Domen Skofic recently scaled the full length in an impressive feat of bravery and determination.
The route had 13 pitches, with the most difficult - pitch 10 - graded 8b+, an elite level of climb, especially hundreds of metres above the ground. It's comprised of 800 holds, which collectively weighed over two tonnes. The course was designed by licenced Slovenian route setters, Katja Vidmar and Simon Margon.
Trbovlje Power Station was a lignite-fired power station on the bank of the Sava River near Trbovlje, Slovenia. The plant ceased operation in 2014, after nearly 100 years of production. However, the chimney remains standing - and has been transformed into the longest climbing route in the world.

Installation of a new rockfall barrier on a major road in Slovenia has enabled the route to be reopened just five weeks after a 500m3 failure blocked the carriageway
The failure in late February cut off the R1-233 route between Trbovlje and Ljubljana
as well as severing electricity and water supplies but repairs have enabled the road to be reopened this month
Debris removal was completed soon after the failure but the road could not be reopened after site investigations and software analysis conducted by geologists and engineers indicated a significant hazard still existed
The heavily fractured residual rock mass could not be removed due to the location of a key rail route so rapid design of a rockfall barrier was called for
Contractors started work on drilling to install anchors and baseplates for the post foundations for a Geobrugg RXE barrier in early March
Materials for the 8,000kJ capacity system were delivered to the difficult to access site by the Slovenian armed forces
“Thanks to the crisis management from the authorities
contractors and supplier the road was reopened in the record time – less than six weeks after the incident,” said Trbovlje mayor Jasna Gabrič
DRI Investment Management head of project geotechnics Suzana Svetličič added: “The key to the success of the entire project was the installation of the 8000kJ rockfall barrier by helicopter
The vast experience of the entire team of pilots
alpinists and rockfall system specialists was essential to the successful outcome of this work.”

Public procurement makes up about 11% of Slovenia’s GDP with the European Union average standing at 14%
The European Commission decided to launch a project together with the NGO Transparency International which helped form integrity pacts in order to improve how public procurement procedures are implemented for projects receiving European Regional Development Fund and Cohesion Fund support
In the frame of the initiative 17 NGOs participated in 11 EU Member States observing the use of public funding during the implementation of public procurement procedures
Slovenia also joined the initiative with the pilot implementation of the integrity pact in the frame of the project of energy-saving renovation of the Trbovlje General Hospital
The project is worth EUR 2.5 million of which 40% comes from Cohesion Fund
Energy-saving renovation of hospitals aiming to enhance energy efficiency is an important area in Cohesion Policy implementation is light of the fact that hospitals are the biggest energy consumers in the public sector
The average savings in energy consumption after the energy-saving renovation stands at 50%
The renovation also contributes to improving conditions for one of the most vulnerable groups
and the working conditions for the healthcare staff
The project was successfully closed with its implementation during the public procurement preparation phase being monitored in the frame of the integrity pact by the independent observer Transparency International Slovenia
This resulted in the civil society being included in monitoring how the public procurement procedure was implemented
in checking if the public procurement procedure conformed with the legislation
and in giving recommendations and proposals of how to eliminate any irregularities
Government Office for Development and European Cohesion Policy
Managing Authority for Cohesion Policy in the Republic of Slovenia
is aware that efficient control and transparent monitoring of project implementation is very important
Control and monitoring should be subject to constant improvements in terms of detecting irregularities
errors or potential fraud sooner believes Director of the Managing Authority with the “close cooperation of the involved institutions and exchange of information at all levels of Cohesion Policy implementation being extremely important”
Other speakers at the conference also agreed that the Integrity Pact is a very good initiative
The participants also discussed the state of public procurement in Slovenia
