AA Visiting School Slovenia is a two-week
experimental architecture course organized in Slovenia as a part of the Visiting School programme at the Architectural Association School of Architecture
This is the third version of the programme following the success of the past two years at the same location in Vitanje
It will also be the final course at this location
concluding the trilogy of extensive research and production of nanotourist strategies in Vitanje
Continuing the previous years’ agenda of nanotourist strategies developed for Vitanje and KSEVT
design and make diverse accommodation and experience modules for a newly set-up concept of a diffused hotel for Vitanje
The summer school will take place at the new
Cultural Centre of European Space Technologies
a bold landmark in the tiny Slovenian village of Vitanje of 800 residents that has welcomed over 25,000 visitors in its first year of activity
KSEVT has a public significance and generates social
There is an open need and an exposed potential of Vitanje to become a case study of developing an extreme set of bottom up strategies or prototypes to challenge the conventional notion of tourism
The natural condition of Slovenia as a fragile but diverse landscape and the local phenomenon of obsessive individualism provide principal conditions for nanotourism – a creative critique to the current environmental
social and economic downsides of conventional tourism

The concept design for the building of the KSEVT derives from the habitation wheel of the first geostationary space station described in Noordung's 1929 book titled “The Problem of Space Travel - The Rocket Motor“. The main exhibition space circularly wraps the main round hall, which connects with the research spaces above through the round opening between the two spaces. It creates interaction between the program of local community and the scientific program of KSEVT.
© Miran KambičThe building exceeds the size of the generic houses of Vitanje. With its volumetric and dynamic presence builds the relation with the main church that sits on a little hill in the middle of the town. In this way symbolically represents the Science & Culture counterpart to the Religion & Church.
© Tomaz GregoricThe building is a monolithic concrete structure, positioned freely between a main road on one side and a stream with a green hinterland on the other. The exterior and interior of the building are made of two low cylinders. The bottom one is larger and rises from the North to the South, while the upper cylinder is smaller and joins the larger one on the south while rising to the North. The bottom cylinder is supported by the transparent surface of the entrance glazing.
© Tomaz GregoricBesides special programme and location also collaboration of four architectural offices in developing the project is unique
The idea of collaboration raised on the first meeting where investor invited the four offices to collaborate on internal competition – and office principals decided to actually rather do the project together
The idea concepts came out on serious of workshops
later project was shared in different stages of development between all offices

When 3D printers and parametric design are trendy
innovative experiences related to these fields begin to appear more frequently and with even more creativity
In this case AA organizes a workshop that explores the conventional sleep over a new three-dimensional experience of 3D sleeping
how it feels to sleep hovering off the ground
If you are interested in these new ways of research in the summer of 2015 a new edition is planned
The workshop, organized by Architectural Association, took place at the new, highly specific building KSEVT, Cultural Centre of European Space Technologies
a bold landmark in the tiny Slovenian village of Vitanje of 600 residents that has welcomed over 25,000 visitors in its first year of activity
The natural condition of Slovenia as a fragile but diverse landscape and the local phenomenon of obsessive individualism provide principal conditions for nanotourism
describing a creative critique to the current environmental
it is more an attitude to improve specific everyday environments and to open up new local economies
The site-specific added value to the KSEVT exhibition is the experience of levitation in an environment of gravity
The team’s field of research was the transition from conventional 2D sleeping to the experience of 3D sleeping
The individual version enables the researcher to spend the night in KSEVT by sleeping in a uniquely engineered levitation-suit
a group of people is able to experience 3D sleeping as an extended feature of the exhibition
where a set of pyramid shaped cushions support your entire body in a custom 3D position while asleep
The concept of the KSEVT hotel and 3D sleeping embodies the unique program of KSEVT – it fulfills the accommodation needs of the institution and furthermore upgrades an already unique visitor experience

The rock will be showcased in Vitanje until February
visitors will also be able to see a replica of the space suit worn by astronaut Neil Armstrong during his historic first walk on the Moon’s surface
On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Moon landing last year
the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum made 15 replicas
and only one of them has been showcased in various European institutions
this is not only the promotion of the relevant institution
which for some time has been administered by the Government of the United States
but the promotion of space technologies in general
"Both exhibits are priceless and prove that it is possible to obtain such interesting exhibits with hard work and willpower
Our centre thus maintains its position in the international arena," says Kobold
As stated by the head of the Noordung Centre
and the centre did not wish to pass on such an opportunity since it is impossible to predict when it would present itself again
Kobold believes that they are worth seeing
together with other interesting items from the centre of space technologies
The solemn opening in Vitanje was attended by Zdravko Počivalšek
the Minister of Economic Development and Technology
this was a great step forward in the development of the space centre
Space technology is also important for Slovenia as many Slovenian companies participate in these programmes
Slovenia became a member of the European Space Agency in 2016
which enabled equal participation for these companies
Ambassador Blanchard confirmed that the organisation involved in hosting the American exhibits demanded great effort and added that
despite detailed planning at the onset of the pandemic
she did not dare to think that they would succeed
I set myself ambitious goals to reach the stars
but I didn’t imagine in my wildest dreams that I would bring a small piece of the Moon to your country," said the Ambassador at the opening and highlighted that this proves that no goal is unattainable

The Architectural Association School of Architecture
the UK's oldest Architectural School and one of the first to abandon a curriculum-based system for one based on modules
has always been at the forefront when it comes to teaching and learning about architecture
Every year it organises Visiting Schools (the AAVS) which are about learning
exploring collaborating and experimenting with a diverse group of international partners to reimagine the shape form and expectation of architectural education
With 19 different programmes in 13 countries
Europe represents the most involved of the AAVS continents
The workshop nanoSLOVENIA.nanotourism focuses on the concept of experience tourism
allowing participants to engage in a wide range of projects
from site-specific micro interventions at a 1:1 scale to holistic strategies for existing contexts
the proposals can materialise in actions or structures that are temporary or permanent
ultimately seeking to create a comprehensible
Within the contemporary economic realities
the workshop aims for small and smart solutions that rely on local resources
and seeks innovative design and financing alternatives that bypass major institutions and established spatial planning bureaucracy
nanoSLOVeNIA.nanotourism will collaborate with Ljubljana’s Biennial of Design (BIO.50) and its curator Jan Boelen
director of Z33 – House for Contemporary Art
in a multidisciplinary research that explores possible futures for design
One of the biennial’s research topics
will inform the workshop’s theoretical framework

This is the first ever display of a priceless piece of the Moon’s surface in Slovenia
The basalt sample was collected by astronaut and geologist Harrison "Jack" Schmitt during the Apollo 17 mission in 1972 in the vicinity of the landing site of the lunar module
The 120-gramme piece is part of a larger rock that weighed around eight kilos when it was brought to Earth
It is estimated to be around 3.75 billion years old
which makes it older than 99.99% of all the rocks on Earth.
The exhibition is made even more attractive by rich and interesting multimedia content
such as the presentation of the Apollo mission and a glance at the future of lunar research with the Artemis programme
Interactive multimedia content lets visitors explore the Moon and discover its most famous craters
It also explains the method and purpose of obtaining samples on the Moon and shows where they are kept today
while Apollo 17 astronauts take visitors to the Moon and back via visualisation
On 29 August, the Noordung Centre at Vitanje will also exhibit a replica of Neil Armstrong’s space suit made at the 50th anniversary of the Moon landing by 3D scanning of the original
which is part of the collection of the National Air and Space Museum in Washington

‘space wheel: noordung space habitation center’ is the new home for the cultural center of european space technologies (KSEVT) in vitanje
influenced by rocket engineer herman potocnik noordung’s habitation wheel for the first geostationary space station
the center features a series of hoops that criss-cross one another to create sectional level changes and slope in the building
the entrance to the center is permitted by a lift in the lower and large cylinder to the south
the spatial relationship between the two cylinders result in a dynamic effect of floatation
intended to replace the existing arts center in vitanje
the KSEVT will host a number of social activities with fixed and temporary exhibitions
the main entrance can be completely open to the public square outside to connect and expand the activities of the hall
the circular hall is bordered on both sides by a curving rampway which leads visitors to the exhibition area
the smaller cylinder accommodates the multi-purpose hall
an auditorium which sits like a terrace above the main hall below
multiple sight lines are established from this vertical position to the activities below
the basic construction of the project is reinforced concrete
