The company from Vrhnika setting new hygiene standards
make something out of toilet paper.” These are words shared with us through laughter by Janez Barbo Sr.
the founding father and co-owner of Barjans d.o.o.
a company now celebrating 30 years of tradition
Authorized Representative and Key Account Manager
adds that when he began to expand the already blooming family company
during the period immediately after Slovenia gained its independence
that was “the time when it was necessary to start with something new.” So they started; slowly
but bravely and with greater determination every day
having grown beyond the scale of most family businesses
they like to emphasize that they are a family company with a family mindset
The Barjans company is a wholesaler of sanitary paper
professional cleaning agents and cleaning tools
They offer virtually everything in the hygiene field
from cleaning machines and sanitary supplies to consumables for the catering industry and paper products
Their range includes more than 4,000 items
aimed at all levels of professional requirement and various price points
they achieved revenues of just over €8 million
but the company’s success is built on far more than its sales volume
The family believes that their depth of knowledge is perhaps even more important to the provision of an effective cleanliness and hygiene system than their range of good quality products
Many suppliers just deliver cleaning agents to the client but we don’t do business that way
we advise our customers on the most appropriate products for them and then we train them in how to use the products correctly
Modern materials used in surfaces nowadays can easily be ruined by using the wrong cleaning agent or the wrong cleaning method
The cleaning process has evolved drastically over the years and our company has developed and grown with these changes,” explains Gregor Živec
who is in charge of sales and integrated customer support
While he has no family ties to the company
he has worked there for more than 12 years
Although Barjans employs nearly 50 people today
the company philosophy tying them together as one big family
is still deeply rooted: “The credit for this goes to all three Barbo co-owners
enthusiastically adding that he feels completely as an equal with the company’s owners and that the input of every employee counts
“It’s true that we make all our decisions through consensus
and you won’t hear of a course of action resulting from a management directive
Our communication is always open when making decisions and the proposal that everyone considers the best also wins,” says Director Matevž Barbo
He adds that the healthy relationship among employees
the relaxed atmosphere throughout and thus the employees’ sense of belonging
are in his view the recipe for the company’s success
“People who work in our company are very protective of it,” says Ana Basić Dremelj
when describing the engagement of employees
Relationships and communication in the company have developed over time
primarily due to growth and the consequent increase in activity
and worked hard from morning to evening,” says Vesna Fišter
Vesna has worked in the company since its foundation and now is Procurement Manager
Matevž describes the beginning and his journey in the company thus: “I’ve always been involved in everything; I have literally grown up with the company so I have
an insight into everything.” When they were starting
was also significantly different than today
as “people didn’t think about hygiene that much.” Their market niche was discovered by Janez Sr.
believes that they were the pioneers in this field in Slovenia: “For example
so why would we be offering them something so much more expensive
The change of mindset for people to realize that they needed it took some time.”
Their mission and goal have always been to be the best in their industry
They say that they have reached this goal in Slovenia but that they need to work hard every day to maintain it
but first and foremost they want to preserve high quality: “We don’t work just to operate a business and build up references
The added value and quality must remain so that we actually gain quality customers.”
demanding and because it provides ample work
they have never really thought about expanding abroad
healthcare centers and hospitals account for 40% of their operations
where a lack of awareness about the importance of hygiene is still present all too often
No one is willing to invest more money into hygiene and the same applies to organic cleaning agents: “In the world of professional cleaning
where manufacturers maintain the idea that a cleaning agent should be powerful and the price should be low
organic cleaning agents are out of the question
we invest a little more effort and a few more minutes of our time
limited by working hours and number of employees
the demand for organic cleaning agents is much greater than 10 years ago and there are also companies who have adopted certain standards on using organic cleaning agents without chemicals
the Barjans company supplies these products to such companies
although the overall trend is toward lesser use of cleaning agents
40 to 50 litres of cleaning agents were used in one building
such cleaning agents are concentrated or the quantity used is measured much more thoroughly
Development of the company and the industry is something Barjans strives for every day
All other investments are also very carefully planned
not least because this is a family company which has grown through a great deal of sacrifice
They are socially responsible and consider all the requests for donations they receive throughout the year
before deciding collectively on which to support
especially when there are children or local associations involved
they established the Barjans Education Center
through which they regularly conduct professional and practical training in the field of hygiene and cleanliness
and where participants can obtain an internationally-recognized certificate
long-anticipated state-of-the-art warehouse
They have never had difficulties with ownership
but Matevž Barbo says that he would like to hand the management of the company over to his children sooner rather than later
he also reveals: “They are still too young to know what they are interested in
If this is how the family tradition goes on
we will organize ourselves differently when the time is right
I don’t really run the business - the employees do.” Admiring the new premises
reflects on how everything they have achieved so far is above initial expectations
with just my own ideas and those of my dad
is also proud and happy; so much so that he has little input into company matters these days
he likes to spend time in his new fruit orchard
so future generations will be able to enjoy the fruits of his work

17 (Xinhua) -- One man was killed and two badly injured in an explosion that occurred on Friday at a facility of fireworks manufacturer Hamex in Vrhnika
a town about 20 kilometers west of the capital Ljubljana
No other persons had been present at the site when the blast occurred
which took several hours for the firemen to put out
Police and firefighters sealed off the area
The cause of the blast was not immediately known
Doctors at Slovenia's main University Medical Center Ljubljana are fighting for the lives of the two injured workers
who both suffered severe burns and internal injuries
Family and Social Affairs Luka Mesec told reporters that the government would prepare legislation to prevent such accidents in the future once the reason for the explosion is established
an explosion that occurred at the Melamin plant in the southern Slovenian town of Kocevje killed seven people
It was the biggest industrial accident in the country since Slovenia's independence in 1991
bringing a welcome source of protein at winter's end
So it's no surprise that cultures around the world celebrate spring by honoring the egg
like the red eggs that get baked into Greek Easter breads
Others elevate the egg into an elaborate art
like the heavily jewel-encrusted Faberge eggs that were favored by the Russian czars starting in the 19th century
One ancient form of egg art comes to us from Ukraine
Ukrainians have been drawing intricate patterns on pysanky eggs using a traditional method that involves a stylus and wax
Contemporary artists have adapted these methods to create eggs that speak to the anxieties of our age: Life is precious
"There's something about their fragile nature that in an insane way appeals to me," says New Yorker cartoonist Roz Chast
she became obsessed with eggs and learned the traditional wax-resist technique used for Ukrainian pysanky eggs to draw her very modern characters
"I've broken eggs at every stage of the process — from the very beginning to the very
But there's an appeal in that vulnerability
"There's part of this sickening horror of knowing you're walking on the edge with this
Knowing that it could all fall apart at any second."
to a Humpty Dumpty who seems all too aware of his imminent fate
Traditional Ukrainian pysanky also spoke to those fears
The elaborate patterns were believed to offer protection against evil
"There's an ancient legend that as long as pysanky are made, evil will not prevail in the world," says Joan Brander
She's been making pysanky for more than 60 years
having learned the art of the egg from her Ukrainian relatives
dates back to Ukrainian spring rituals in pre-Christian times
The tradition was incorporated into the Christian church
"A pysanka thrown into the field would be a wish for a good harvest."
She says that pysanky artists used to work in secret
Artists share designs and techniques online
so they no longer have to rely on family traditions
Paul Wirhun
has adapted pysanky techniques he learned as a child in a Ukrainian-American family for decidedly modern ends
including a series of eggs commemorating those who died in the Iraq war
is not just a symbolic object — "it's a power object." When people raised chickens themselves
the eggs would have been fertilized by a rooster
"It wasn't just a representation of new life
it was new life." When artists decorate eggs
we can reduce the need for aggression around desirable feeding spots

or moving a submarine into a military museum are challenges only a few can take on
Their team of experienced professionals takes care of machine relocations
transport and can lift even the most difficult loads
The beginnings of today’s company go back to the 1970s
was officially founded by Franc Jeraj in 1980
the company with around 40 employees is based in Sinja Gorica near Vrhnika and is successfully managed by Franc’ sons
The company has the largest fleet of lifts in Slovenia
They are proud that their organization and flexibility allow them to take on challenges others cannot
“We are the first choice for projects that demand individual approach and work plan as well as total reliability,” they explain
Franc Jeraj’s educational background is in car repair and his first job was as a car body technician
he soon suffered a bad work-related injury
as he was badly burned during a welding accident
he knew that he wanted to become an entrepreneur
He started by borrowing a small truck from his father and working in transport industry
from livestock and milk to iron and concrete
the only thing that mattered was good work ethics
You did not need anything else,” recalls Franc
His hard work paid off and his transport business grew
the long drives started to take their toll
“I was afraid of falling asleep at the wheel and causing an accident
I realized things could not go on this way
so I started thinking about other options,” explains Franc
The idea of heavy lifts was born at the Zagreb fair
who advised him to start a lifting business
Franc knew nothing about working with lifts
he did not even understand what Peter wanted to say; that there was heavy demand for this type of work and that the circumstances were favorable for starting a new company,” recalls Franc’ wife Mira with a smile
they finally decided to take Peter’s advice
We did not really think much about the profit and even today
Franc and Mira first decided on a different name
but when they went to register the company
so they quickly brainstormed and came up with Dvig
a name which is now well-known in the industry
They were able to get a good loan to buy the first lifts and paid it off in just a few years
“The first summer when we started working with lifts
Franc had not yet had a permit to operate them
We also had no workshop space; all repairs were done in front of the house
The beginnings were really wild,” explains Mira
they already had six lifts and 12 employees
Mira took care of accounting from the very beginning
She also helped some of their friends who were entrepreneurs or had their own companies
We simply helped each other out when we could,” recalls Mira
Franc and Mira always carefully considered all important business decisions together
People always ask them about the secret to their success
Her son Janez adds: “This was the winning combination
If my parents didn’t work together so well
things would not have worked out so well.”
Dvig operates mostly in the construction and industry
Their lifts and trucks are mostly used in construction
while their teams and specialized forklifts shine in machine relocation projects
state-of-the-art equipment and their knowledge are the advantages that took the Jeraj family to the very top of their sector
Janez points out that challenges are not solved by lifts
They are always happy to take on even the most difficult projects
and the special transport of the Slovenian Christmas tree from Kočevje
are just some of the extreme challenges Dvig successfully completed
They are experts in making ‘impossible’ projects possible
“Our clients appreciate the completeness of our services; everything is done on time and as agreed
They simply tell us what must be done and when
The trick is to take as much burden from the clients as possible
This creates trust and makes it easier to get work,” says Franc
They usually meet them through Slovenian companies they work with
but when they see the level of services Dvig offers
Mira and Franc are now retired and have entrusted the company to their sons
my wife and I wanted our sons to stay in the company
not event the company,” says the founder Franc Jeraj
But the sons wanted to continue the family story
They grew up with the company and always helped when they had the chance
“Father and mother were so intertwined with the company
that it simply made sense for us to join it
since we practically grew up with it,” says Janez
but plan to transfer more of the ownership to their sons
who are managing the family company with great success
are co-Directors of the company and are both actively involved in its management
while Janez does most of the administrative work
as they both know that their priority is the well-being of the company
who have a complete trust in our decisions,” says Janez
While he admits disagreements sometimes crop up
where people think that the partners should be similar
It’s better if each one of them does their own thing and fills in areas the other lacks,” elaborates Janez
Janez and Miha don’t want to set any expectations for their children
Miha’s daughter is already helping in the company during school holidays
“They will become familiar with the work in the company
but they will decide on their own what they want to do in life,” says Janez
Even though the work at Dvig can be dangerous
One reason is that they are always happy to employ the right people when they find them
even if they may not have a need for new employees at the time
They are more than aware of the value of good workers
Most of their employees come to them through recommendations
“The best employees are those who want to find a new job and come to us by their own initiative,” says Franc
they insure all their equipment and their employees
“My greatest fear is our people getting hurt at work
The work can be dangerous; we have burdens weighing thousands of tons lifted in the air every day,” adds Franc
who still remembers the youthful desire to walk on the edge
The purpose of everything Dvig does is to provide the clients with a feeling of peace and safety
Their desire for the future is to remain a trustworthy partner for their most important clients
They are satisfied with the size of the company as it is and do not plan to expand; but they want to remain the best at what they do
They are also looking forward to moving into new facilities next year

The explosion occurred at a factory owned by fireworks manufacturer Hamex
Local police said the cause of the blast is unknown
however it is thought that the blast originated in a production area of the plant before causing a fire which spread to a storage warehouse at the site
It took firefighters several hours to extinguish the blaze due to the risk of further explosions
One employee was confirmed to have died at the scene
while two others were rushed to hospital where they were treated for severe burn injuries
Doctors said the two injured men were in a serious but stable condition and had suffered internal injuries as well as numerous burns
No one else was at the site when the explosion happened. In May 2022
Slovenia suffered one of its worst industrial accident ever when an explosion at a chemical plant in southeastern Slovenia killed six people and injured five others

Hazardex Live 2024 event review
Until the completion of the railway to Trieste in the mid-19th century
the transportation of goods had mostly been carried out on the river of Ljubljanica
There was always “abundance of ships” on the river
At the river port in Vrhnika the goods were shifted onto heavy carts and transported to Trieste by road
While perishable goods were transported immediately
the rest of the goods were stored in two warehouses located by the Ljubljanica river
One of them was owned by a special toll office
The grain warehouse for the needs of the Idrija mine was built in the 1760s
and pillars made of stone and oak running down the middle of it
On the ground floor there were two smaller rooms
and one smaller space for storing ironware
Located on the first floor were a small room
and a long spacious room for storing grain
The building of the warehouse was commissioned by the state
It was initially called the Warehouse of Temišvar
but was later renamed into the Warehouse of Idrija
the state bought a field called Brod from Ludvik Dietrich
located between Ljubljanska Road and the Ljubljanica river
The grain was intended for the Idrija miners
whose wages were paid partly in money and partly in grain
575 bushels of wheat were distributed among the miners
so it was decided in 1820 that grain was to be distributed three times a month
the road through Dole to Vrhnika was built in the second half of the 17th century
and a superintendent was employed to supervise the arrival of grain and other necessities in Idrija and the carting away of mercury from Idrija along that route
grain had been stored in Garzarolli’s house and the toll collector Ludvik Dietrich was paid 50 Gulden annually to supervise regular and punctual delivery of grain to Idrija
as well as removed the wooden equipment from the warehouse and placed 20 cannons inside it
the warehouse was once again used for its original purpose
Once the river traffic on the river of Ljubljanica stopped
so the state sold it and its purpose changed several times with each new owner
its power bearing witness of important things that once took place there
Presented as this month’s archivalia are two of the interesting plans from the fonds of the Provincial Building Directorate
The Directorate was in charge of the construction and maintenance of roads
and provincial buildings in Carniola and for a certain period also in Carinthia
During the operation of the Directorate and its successors
an extensive collection of plans was created in addition to their collection of records
Deterioration can also be observed in plans on paper
