Pogacar wins by 5:14 in first race after Liège-Bastogne-Liège crash
Tadej Pogačar and Urška Žigart won the Slovenian national time trial championships on Thursday
giving the couple two titles to celebrate during a rare visit to compete at home.
Pogačar had not raced since fracturing his scaphoid at Liège-Bastogne-Liège but won the men’s time trial title by over five minutes against local opposition
suggesting he is back to his best and ready for the Tour de France.
Pogačar beat Marko Pavlič of the Slovenian MebloJOGI Pro-concrete Continental team by 5:14
Anže Skok (Ljubljana Gusto Santic) was third at 6:30
An hour earlier, Žigart won the women’s time trial title on the same course
She beat former UAE Team ADQ rider Urška Pintar by 1:43
with Eugenia Bujak (UAE Team ADQ) third at 5:33
The 15.7km course climbed almost constantly from Zgornje Gorje (at an altitude of 635 metres) to Pokljuka (at 1346 metres)
Both Žigart and Pogačar took the Slovenian time trial titles for a third time each
The 2023 championship was held on the same course as in 2020 and Pogačar beat his 2020 time 1:27
The riders were soaked by rain in 2020 and Pogačar beat Primož Roglič by just nine seconds
with the 2020 season delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic
he won the Tour de France for the first time
"It was a good test for the time trial at the Tour de France,” Pogačar told Slovenian television. “I wanted to ride better than three years ago
I set myself the goal of improving my time by one minute
which I achieved and so I’m very happy
We improved in terms of time but also a lot in the equipment we use
I just have to make sure I don't fall or hit the bone.”
Žigart is expected to ride the Tour de France Femmes with Jayco-AlUla and recently showed her form by going close to victory at the Tour de Suisse Women.
“I’m really happy to keep the jersey for another year
I’m always really proud to wear the national colours,” she said
“It was really hot today and I got a bit scared
but luckily there was something left in my legs after the last few days of racing
I’m super happy with how it went today and I’m looking forward to keeping the shape for the races in July.”

Jonny was Cycling Weekly's Weekend Editor until 2022
I like writing offbeat features and eating too much bread when working out on the road at bike races
Before joining Cycling Weekly I worked at The Tab and I've also written for Vice
and worked freelance for The Telegraph (I know
but I needed the money at the time so let me live)
I also worked for ITV Cycling between 2011-2018 on their Tour de France and Vuelta a España coverage
Sometimes I'd be helping the producers make the programme and other times I'd be getting the lunches
Just in case you were wondering - Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen had the same ham sandwich every day
Urška Žigart and Tadej Pogačar just won some hardware at the 2023 Slovenian time trial championships
where she was 75 m away from snagging a win
Belgian newspaper refers to Women’s WorldTour cyclist Urška Žigart as “Pogačar’s girlfriend”
Her fiancé, the former Tour de France winner, was back racing after a break due to a broken wrist at Liège–Bastogne–Liège. Žigart, who rides for Women’s WorldTour team, Jayco AlUla won the 15.7 km test from Zgornje Gorje Pokljuka in 38:19, almost two minutes faster than another Urška, (Pintar) from BTC City Ljubljana Scott.
In the men’s race, Pog annihilated the competition, putting over 5 minutes into Marko Pavlič (mebloJOGI Pro-concrete.) The course was a very tough, uphill race, which explains the former Tour de France winner averaging 32 km/h. Both Žigart and Pogačar will also be racing for the road title on Sunday.

The topic of the monument to the National Liberation Struggle became at that time one of the central missions of his school at the Faculty of Architecture
with Plečnik collaborating with students on a number of monuments
Plečnik emphasised the nation’s independence and supported the Liberation Front
with World War II leaving a deep personal scar on him
the commemorative plaque to the students fallen in the war
Plečnik’s oeuvre includes as much as 25 completed monuments and commemorations to the National Liberation Struggle; five are in Ljubljana
while the others are scattered throughout Slovenia
Plečnik was known for not charging anything for his designs
which naturally resulted in an abundance of requests
The monuments’ clients – mostly local associations of war veterans – usually repaid Plečnik and his students
We can typologically divide Plečnik’s monuments to the National Liberation Struggle into four categories
but all of them are recognisable by their originality
and special attention to their spatial placing and circumstances
Plečnik used solely architectural elements
while he integrated the official symbols of the time
Plečnik's erected monuments are columns or block-shaped
and their context ties into votive monuments from the past
We can recognise a large amount of student work in them
as they were most often straightforward projects and we know of several variations for a single project
which are transfigurations of pre-war chapels or even mausoleums
The third type of monuments are fountain-shaped: just a few of them were ever realised with many never leaving the planning stage
with water serving as the symbol of living memory
the most interesting Plečnik monuments are those that are the most original
These were designed with pure architectural elements; cylinder
One of the most inventive monuments is situated near the Plečnik House in Trnovo; in one of the design solutions for this one

UAE Team Emirates rider shows his TT skills in the rain
Roglic was the favourite to win the 15.7km time trial but Pogacar proved to be stronger over the 7.9km climb and the fast ride to the finish
with Jan Polanc (UAE Team Emirates) third with a time of 32:57
"After second place last week coming back and taking the win felt really nice
It was a course I knew very well and we had trained a lot on it during the week," Pogacar said
"Jan has showed his form is coming really good
He worked hard last week for me in the road race and to get the bronze is really nice for the team also."
Jani Brajkovič (Adria Mobil) continued his comeback at a professional level
The testing and contrasting course meant technical choices played a significant part in the results
Pogacar and Polanc opted to change bikes after the climb
Last year Pogacar beat Matej Mohoric (Bahrain-McLaren) by 29 seconds in the absence of Roglic on a more traditional course around the Slovenian capital of Ljubljana
This year's race was held between Zgornje Gorje to Pokljuka in the north-east of the country near the border with Austria
with Italy's Alessandro De Marchi (CCC Team) setting a time of 34:21 for ninth place.
