The result provides overwhelming evidence that the object is indeed a black hole and yields valuable clues about the workings of such giants
which are thought to reside at the centre of most galaxies
produced by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) Collaboration
uses observations from a worldwide network of radio telescopes
and is a long-anticipated look at the massive object that sits at the very centre of our galaxy
Scientists had previously seen stars orbiting around something invisible
and very massive at the centre of the Milky Way
This strongly suggested that this object – known as Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*
pronounced "sadge-ay-star”) – is a black hole
and today’s image provides the first direct visual evidence of it
Although we cannot see the black hole itself
glowing gas around it reveals a tell-tale signature: a dark central region (called a “shadow”) surrounded by a bright ring-like structure
The new view captures light bent by the powerful gravity of the black hole
which is four million times more massive than our Sun
Dr Ziri Younsi (UCL Mullard Space Science Laboratory)
EHT Collaboration member and co-author on the research papers describing the new findings
said: “Our results are the strongest evidence to date that a black hole resides at the centre of our galaxy
This black hole is the glue that holds the galaxy together
It is key to our understanding of how the Milky Way formed and will evolve in the future
“Producing this image is the result of a monumental effort by hundreds of scientists over five years
It was especially challenging because of the haze of stars
and gas in between Earth and the Galactic Centre
as well as the fact that the pattern of light from Sgr A* changed quickly
But now we have comprehensive findings and this work opens a new chapter in our understanding of black holes.”
MediaCentral Widget Placeholderhttps://mediacentral.ucl.ac.uk/Player/9GFeJ9gb
a UKRI Stephen Hawking Fellow at UCL who has recently been appointed to the EHT Science Council
and is the author of one of only two codes used to generate the entire library of nearly 2 million simulated images of Sgr A*
from the Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics
said: “We were stunned by how well the size of the ring agreed with predictions from Einstein’sTheory of General Relativity
These unprecedented observations have greatly improved our understanding of what happens at the very centre of our galaxy.”
The EHT team's results are being published today in a special issue of The Astrophysical Journal Letters
Because the black hole is about 27,000 light-years away from Earth
it appears to us to have about the same size in the sky as an orange on the Moon
which linked together eight existing radio observatories across the planet to form a single “Earth-sized” virtual telescope
The EHT observed Sgr A* on multiple nights
similar to using a long exposure time on a camera
The breakthrough follows the EHT collaboration’s 2019 release of the first image of a black hole
at the centre of the more distant Messier 87 galaxy
MediaCentral Widget Placeholderhttps://mediacentral.ucl.ac.uk/Player/gcdajhDJ
EHT scientist Dr Keiichi Asada from the Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics
said: “Now we can study the differences between these two supermassive black holes [and] can go much further in testing gravity in these extreme environments than ever before.”
This achievement was considerably more difficult than for M87*
Department of Astronomy of the University of Arizona
said: “The gas in the vicinity of both black holes orbits at nearly light speed
But where gas takes days to weeks to orbit the larger M87*
for the much smaller Sgr A* an orbit completes in mere minutes
This means the brightness and pattern of the gas around Sgr A* changes rapidly as the EHT observes it.”
The researchers had to develop sophisticated new tools that accounted for the gas movement around Sgr A*
The image of the Sgr A* black hole is an average of the different images the team extracted
finally revealing the giant lurking at the centre of our galaxy for the first time
Progress on the EHT continues: a major observation campaign in March 2022 included more telescopes than ever before
The ongoing expansion of the EHT network and significant technological upgrades will allow scientists to share even more impressive images as well as movies of black holes in the near future

The new images are from observations taken in April 2018
one year after the first observations of M87* in April 2017 which resulted in the first ever image of a black hole
bright ring of emission of the same size as was found in 2017
The brightness peak of the ring has shifted by about 30º compared to the images from 2017
which is consistent with theoretical understanding of variability from turbulent material around black holes
uses observations from a worldwide network of radio telescopes and the new images feature the first participation of the newly commissioned Greenland Telescope as well as a dramatically improved recording rate across the array of telescopes
The images are presented in a paper in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics
of the Academia Sinica Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics in Taiwan
said: “A fundamental requirement of science is to be able to reproduce results
“Confirmation of the ring in a completely new data set is a huge milestone for our collaboration and a strong indication that we are looking at a black hole shadow and the material orbiting around it.”
Dr Ziri Younsi (Mullard Space Science Laboratory at UCL)
who is also a member of the EHT Science Council
said: “These independent new data provide important validation of our previous results
“It is very exciting that over the course of a year
the brightest part of the bright ring encircling the black hole shadow has shifted by about 30 degrees
“This shift is something that was predicted in 2019 and is wonderful to now observe
showing the turbulent and dynamical nature of the supermassive black hole as matter orbits around its event horizon
“The brightest part of the ring appears brighter as its material is likely coming towards us
but it may also be where the material is more strongly magnetised
It might be that this bright area coincides with the base of the black hole’s jet
as it is about where we would expect this base to be
“The fact that the ring size remains essentially unchanged
as predicted by Einstein's General Relativity
It tells us that powerful gravitational lensing of light from the surrounding material is important and this is therefore most likely a black hole with an event horizon.”
The object M87* is the beating heart of the giant elliptical galaxy Messier 87 and lives 55 million light years away from Earth
The first image of the black hole revealed a bright circular ring
Further analysis of the data also revealed the structure of M87* in polarized light
giving greater insight into the geometry of the magnetic field and the nature of the plasma around the black hole
The Greenland Telescope joined the EHT for the first time in 2018
just five months after its construction was completed far above the Arctic Circle
This new telescope significantly improved the image fidelity of the EHT array
The Large Millimeter Telescope also participated for the first time with its full 50 m surface
The EHT array was also upgraded to observe in four frequency bands around 230 GHz
the EHT also serves as a technology testbed for cutting-edge developments in high-frequency radio interferometry
a PhD candidate at the Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía (IAA-CSIC) in Spain
said: “Advancing scientific endeavours requires continuous enhancement in data quality and analysis techniques
The inclusion of the Greenland Telescope in our array filled critical gaps in our earth-sized telescope
and the forthcoming 2024 observations witness improvements to the array
fuelling our enthusiasm to push the frontiers of black hole astrophysics.”
The image of M87* taken in 2018 is remarkably similar to what was found in 2017
with a dark central region and one side of the ring brighter than the other
The mass and distance of M87* will not appreciably increase throughout a human lifetime
so general relativity predicts that the ring diameter should stay the same from year to year
The stability of the measured diameter in the images from 2017 to 2018 robustly supports the conclusion that M87* is well described by general relativity
a former graduate student at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech)
now a postdoctoral fellow at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California
said: “One of the remarkable properties of a black hole is that its radius is strongly dependent on only one quantity: its mass
“Since M87* is not accreting material (which would increase its mass) at a rapid rate
general relativity tells us that its radius will remain fairly unchanged over human history
It’s pretty exciting to see that our data confirm this prediction.”
the EHT conducted successful observations in 2021 and 2022 and is scheduled to observe in the first half of 2024

Democratic and Republican students at the University of Illinois at Springfield got together Friday evening to share some pizza and watch the first presidential debate between Barack Obama and John McCain
Student leaders from both parties said people are excited about the race
this isn’t the first election where I can vote
and they are going to get to make a choice that’s going to reflect on their world for the next few years
Friday’s bipartisan event drew a few dozen people in the Great Room at Lincoln Hall
and grabbed a couple OF pieces of pizza before they dimmed the lights and sat down to watch the debate
agreed that students are excited about the upcoming election
“We’ve seen a lot of new registered voters,” Ziri said
This is an important election for our generation
a master’s degree student in political studies from Springfield
doesn’t think the race is as tight as some of the polls indicate
“The young people are going to come out for Obama,” Ziri said
“The young people are not as represented in the polls because of cell phones
a Glasford resident who has a double major in legal studies and political science
said Friday’s debate will set the tone for the rest of the campaign
“I do think there are a lot of undecided voters,” Guiliano said
“I think if you polled people here tonight
you’d find that we’ve already picked sides
Seen in polarised light for the first time
this new view of the monster lurking at the heart of the Milky Way galaxy has revealed a magnetic field structure strikingly similar to that of the black hole at the centre of the M87 galaxy
suggesting that strong magnetic fields may be common to all black holes
This similarity also hints toward a hidden jet in Sgr A*
The results were published today in The Astrophysical Journal Letters
Scientists unveiled the first image of Sgr A*— which is approximately 27,000 light-years away from Earth — in 2022
revealing that while the Milky Way’s supermassive black hole is more than a thousand times smaller and less massive than M87’s
This made scientists wonder whether the two shared common traits outside of their looks
the team decided to study Sgr A* in polarised light
Previous studies of light around M87* revealed that the magnetic fields around the black hole giant allowed it to launch powerful jets of material back into the surrounding environment
the new images have revealed that the same may be true for Sgr A*
co-author of the new papers and a member of the EHT Science Council
said: “It is very exciting to see the first polarised images of the black hole in the heart of our galaxy
These observations reveal much more information about the magnetic fields surrounding the black hole
and will improve our ability to model accreting black holes in the future
“It is remarkable that the polarisation structure of Sgr A* is so similar to that of the M87 black hole
which we know possesses a prodigious relativistic jet
This exciting new study hints at the possibility of a jet hiding near the event horizon of Sgr A*.”
co-lead of the project from the Center for Astrophysics
said: “What we’re seeing now is that there are strong
and organised magnetic fields near the black hole at the centre of the Milky Way galaxy
“Along with Sgr A* having a strikingly similar polarisation structure to that seen in the much larger and more powerful M87* black hole
we’ve learned that strong and ordered magnetic fields are critical to how black holes interact with the gas and matter around them.”
electromagnetic wave that allows us to see objects
light oscillates in a preferred orientation
and we call it “polarised.” Although polarised light surrounds us
to human eyes it is indistinguishable from “normal” light
particles whirling around magnetic field lines impart a polarisation pattern perpendicular to the field
This allows astronomers to see in increasingly vivid detail what’s happening in black hole regions and map their magnetic field lines
project co-lead and Harvard Black Hole Initiative Fellow
said: “By imaging polarised light from hot glowing gas near black holes
we are directly inferring the structure and strength of the magnetic fields that thread the flow of gas and matter that the black hole feeds on and ejects
“Polarised light teaches us a lot more about the astrophysics
and mechanisms that take place as a black hole feeds.”
But imaging black holes in polarised light isn’t as easy as putting on a pair of polarised sunglasses
which is changing so fast that it doesn’t sit still for pictures
Imaging the supermassive black hole requires sophisticated tools above and beyond those previously used for capturing M87*
The images of both supermassive black holes in polarised light
provide new ways to compare black holes of different sizes and masses
the images are likely to reveal even more secrets of black holes and their similarities or differences
The EHT collaboration involves more than 300 researchers from Africa
The international collaboration is working to capture the most detailed black hole images ever obtained by creating a virtual Earth-sized telescope
The EHT has conducted several observations since 2017 and is scheduled to observe Sgr A* again in April 2024
the images improve as the EHT incorporates new telescopes
Planned expansions for the next decade will enable high-fidelity movies of Sgr A*
and could allow astronomers to observe similar polarisation features in other black holes
extending the EHT into space will provide sharper images of black holes than ever before

MANILA, Philippines – Albania’s Drita Ziri was crowned Miss Earth 2023 on Friday night
She succeeded South Korea’s Mina Sue Choi
Miss Earth is an annual international competition held to celebrate “the many beautiful and varied forms of fauna
and to further promote the preservation and conservation of our planet.”
Ziri bested 84 other contestants who vied for the title of Miss Earth – one of the four major international pageants in the world along with Miss Universe
This made her the 22nd beauty queen to clinch the highly coveted Miss Earth crown
The new Miss Earth also made history as the first Albanian woman to win the Miss Earth crown and to win in any major international pageant
She was also the second Miss Earth titleholder crowned during a physical pageant since the competitions were held online in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic
As the new ambassadress of the Miss Earth based in the Philippines
which has the distinct advocacy for environmental protection
The new Miss Earth is also expected to use her platform to raise awareness and influence others to help save the planet
Ziri also became the first Miss Earth titleholder to wear the new crown designed by Long Beach Pearl, a Vietnamese jewelry company. Long Beach Pearl is also the creator of the sakura-themed crown of Miss International
Her elemental court includes Philippines’ Yllana Aduana as Miss Earth Air
Vietnam’s Đỗ Thị Lan Anh as Miss Earth Water
and Thailand’s Cora Bliaut as Miss Earth Fire
the top 8 finalists who fell short in entering the top 4 were announced as runner-ups
Next year’s edition of Miss Earth will be held once again in Vietnam
nobody had ever seen a black hole and the only way to prove their existence was indirectly
when the first ever image of one was created by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT)
developed by a team of 60 institutes - including UCL’s Mullard Space Science Laboratory (MSSL) - with the aim of transforming our understanding of black holes
The EHT’s black hole image was created by using new techniques to link up existing radio telescopes distributed across the globe to create one giant instrument
With an aperture that is almost the diameter of the Earth
the EHT provides close to the greatest resolving power achievable from the surface of our planet
Research on radiation transport in strong gravity carried out by MSSL’s Dr Ziri Younsi and Professor Kinwah Wu has led to Dr Younsi’s development of physical frameworks and computational tools which contributed directly to the EHT’s ability to visualise material orbiting the black hole at the centre of another galaxy
producing the first ever direct image of a black hole
has captured the public imagination via extensive media coverage across the world
reaching tens of millions of people in the UK and over three billion globally
Dr Younsi was the sole UK representative from the EHT team
and as such was asked to provide expert scientific commentary on black holes and astrophysics to local and national newspapers
entertainment magazines including Rolling Stone and Vice
and television programmes including BBC Breakfast
‘Have I got News for You?’ and a dedicated BBC documentary: ‘How to see a black hole: The Universe’s greatest mystery’
the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) and the Royal Mint have chosen the EHT’s image to represent astrophysics on their memorabilia
informed by Dr Younsi’s calculations at MSSL

Residents of a quiet residential cul-de-sac in Sydney’s south-west have expressed their shock after their neighbour of decades
was allegedly stabbed to death in his home by his step-grandson
Police were called to the home in Hillview Street in Roselands about 9.55pm on Wednesday

Emergency services arrived to find Ziri dead with stab wounds
Two officers also had to be taken to St George Hospital to be treated for chemical burns after finding hydrochloric acid – normally used as a pool chemical – had been thrown around the home
The two officers have since been released from hospital
He remains under police guard in hospital and is undergoing treatment for injuries sustained prior to his arrest
Neighbours said Hillview Street had for decades played host to cricket games for the children while the adults happily watched
sipping coffee and chatting together on their front porches

It’s why the events of Wednesday night came as such a shock to the little street in Roselands
Neighbour Susie Fakhry said she had known the Ziri family since the ’70s
The family had previously lived on nearby Flora Street before buying the house on Hillview about 20 years ago
He used to do a lot of maintenance at home

also spoke of Ziri with great fondness on Thursday
The two would regularly have coffee at each other’s homes
and said the family was shattered when Ziri’s wife died of COVID-19 at the end of 2021
Farhat said Ziri was a machine operator for 35 years before retiring
Anthony Ziri (left) found his father dead in the home on Wednesday night and called police
All his children would play cricket out the front of my house,” he said
Farhat said he felt for Ziri’s son Anthony
who found his father’s body on Wednesday night
He made the call to police and has since spoken to detectives
It was Anthony’s stepson who was taken into police custody
Fire and Rescue NSW said eight fire trucks attended the incident
and crews worked with police to ventilate the home to help in setting up a crime scene
Fire and Rescue NSW also provided NSW Ambulance with appropriate protective clothing to enable them to enter the home
The alleged attacker allegedly fled after the incident but was found by officers nearby and arrested about 11.15pm
Campsie Police Area Commander Superintendent Sheridan Waldau said detectives had been unable to interview the 24-year-old due to his hospital treatment
“We’re not sure of the circumstances as to exactly what happened last night as we haven’t been able to speak to the 24-year-old male at this stage
so how it actually occurred last night we’re not quite sure,” she said

making last last Saturday the 9th anniversary of his passage
That is what our stethoscope wielding friends would say
They could be right but such a verdict doesn’t tell us the context in which an infection of the category of Hepatitis B could be fatal
Millions are carrying on in spite of Hepatitis B infection
Something has thus remained missing in terms of how Hepatitis B overwhelmed a one-man intellectual fortress such as the late Reuben Ziri
it must have been as casually as it could be
He was neither married nor did anybody who knew him very well see any women with him on any consistent basis
he has been heard saying he was afraid of women
What the foregone draws attention to is that social stresses associated with entanglement with the green bottles
women and excessive quest for material wealth were not part of his problems
If Hepatitis B is not such a killer but an absolutely treatable stuff and if stresses relating to money
Ziri’s supervisor and shield against vicious tendency politics but who died abruptly in the late 1980s
Tit bits pulled together suggest that exclusion related frustration and disappointment with society created the context in which Hepatitis B led to his death nine years ago on June 12, 2012. This claim compels us to go back to the beginning of the story. Intervention captured that beginning in a previous interview with Ziri by posing it as follows: When he entered the Department of History at Ahmadu Bello University
Zaria in the late 1980s to pursue a Masters Degree
the late National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities
saying that the title of his proposed research was like attempting to break away from the ABU
Zaria School of History in its approach to the study of the emirates of northern Nigeria
Mahmud’s comment was significant in the context of the disputations in that highly politicized Department regarding the real character of the ruling elite in pre-colonial Nigeria
With the title “History of Bida Emirate in the 20th Century: A Study in Colonialism and Transformation of Social Classes
Reuben instantly cut the image of an icon if he proved that the ruling elements in the emirate of Bida could not be denied a class status independent of British colonialists”
The intellectual bonding that developed between student and supervisor was such that it could be further claimed that if Dr
Mahmud Modibbo Tukur never died abruptly in the late 1980s
Reuben Ziri would most likely be a big name Historian today
luxuriating with a powerful voice on matters History
In the razor sharp camp cum tendency politics of the Department
to lose a supportive supervisor was an unmitigated tragedy
His admiration for academia and his self-imagination as an academic of that very Department of History in Zaria died with Tukur
Even Tukur’s recommendation that his Master’s Degree thesis be upgraded to doctoral candidacy was blocked
The gates of academic career were closed against him as far as ABU
It was too much of a shocker that a Ziri acknowledged by his teachers
(particularly Tukur who had himself produced a highly regarded PhD thesis) and mates as something of a genius could confront such fate
The World Council of Churches took note of his plea for scholarship so that he could go to Netherland
But they conditioned the scholarship on a recommendation from a priest of the Anglican Church
the Anglican Church being the church his father had served
the official who was to write the recommendation played his own script
According to information available to Intervention
it was at this point he went back into hunting
A theorist of his hunting career argues now that Ziri felt strongly about a return to nature at this point once he formed the impression that neither academics nor religion (the Church) wanted him
it was his incomprehension of the paradox of a brilliant mind who was being rejected that led him to begin to distrust society
But the behaviour of the Anglican Bishop is not where the story ended
He was reconciling himself very slowly with the idea of teaching any other place other than the Department of History in Zaria
The Department of History at the much younger IBB University
Lapai in his Niger State in central Nigeria provided the opening
But it flopped at the first attempt and would have most likely gone that way if the Pro-Chancellor at the time did not get to hear about it
He said Ziri was the sort of person the university needed and should be given a job
his frustration was building up instead of climbing down
Intervention has been told that he found IBB University job frustrating
He wanted an environment where he could really engage knowledge
that place was not a replica of the ABU environment of History that got him stirring
He has also once warned this reporter against leaving for academia
He would say that in many of the courses he taught
he never had more than two and half students irrespective of the number of students in the class
That was his own way of decrying the quality of students nowadays
Only the University of Ibadan could have saved the situation but Ibadan acted one minute too late
With the upgrade of his MA thesis having been blocked
Netherland scholarship gone with the wind but with the idea of a PhD still strong in his mental make-up
the University of Ibadan and her School of History was the only place available
He berthed there and presented a proposal that must have excited the Department
especially coming from the Zaria School of History
Ibadan must have looked forward to intellectual combat with a product of its rival school of History
That was not to be because Ziri dropped out subsequently
They sent a two-man search team which eventually traced their prized student to Niger State
It would have been the moment he had been living for
He was already in a kind of advanced stage of sickness
Those who say he died of Hepatitis B would
not be completely off the mark but so also those who would say there was a context to the fatal outcome of Hepatitis B
He simply could not come to terms with a society he was seeing as having no respect for merit
disrespectful of scholarship or anything serious
The puzzle though is why his discreetness extended to his friends
As his week-long host in the Government House
he only needed to mention any medical challenge and the best medical attention in Jigawa State at that moment could have been his even if it meant inviting the personal attention of the then governor
It was very clear he was sick even then but he always successfully argued it away and effortlessly continued with the two-some seminar we were holding
It is now understood the few signs he manifested during that visit were the onset of the infection
Reuben Ziri is dead and gone to meet his God
There is nothing anyone can do about that again but he embodies a question for the possibility of a secure future
Is Nigeria being organised in such a manner that the social order will detect the kind of exclusionary practices that greeted him to his incomprehension of it
political parties and researchers thinking of how alienation flowing from such individual and collective encounters can endanger the system
It is great to hear that his MA thesis has since been donated to the Nupe Emirate Council
It would not be that surprising to hear someday that the thesis is being published into a book
At a time of twisted understanding of identity
his thesis would certainly throw more helpful lights on who we all think we are or are not
