Martin Skrtel is embarking on a new career pathdac1904.sk / Lelkes ErnőFormer Slovak national football player Martin Skrtel (39) has become the new sporting director of DAC Dunajska Streda. The club's executive director Jan van Daele made the announcement at Thursday's press conference.DAC is currently in third place in the ongoing Nike Liga
having surprisingly dropped out of European competition this season in the second preliminary round of the Conference League with Azerbaijani club Zira
Skrtel led Slovakia as captain at the 2016 European Championship
The national team advanced to the second round of that tournament
The former stopper was also at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa
which is the only World Cup in which Slovakia have started so far
He finished his national team career in October 2019 with 104 caps
I want to thank the owner of the club and the CEO for the trust and the chance
It's the start of a new phase for me and I believe that I will be able to translate the experience I have gained as a player into a new job and a new position
"I am glad that this chance has come and I can take this new path as an official at this club
I will do my best not to disappoint and to fulfil my role and the club's goals," Skrtel said at the press conference
Martin Skrtel in the new DAC directordac1904.sk / Lelkes ErnőDuring the recent weeks, Martin Skrtel had been in close contact with Spartak Trnava representatives over a role at the club
the signing of a contract did not happen in the end
"I have never hidden the fact that I am a Spartak fan
at the moment I have to distinguish emotions from professional life
"Things have developed in such a way that I am here now
Communication has not been ideal from both sides
but I don't want to create any conflicts
We had a different opinion on some things," he started to explain the reasons for his decision
I shouldn't be the one to take the initiative
The intensity of the negotiations only increased after pressure from the fans
information about my contact with Dunajska Streda had already leaked out
but we had already had about four meetings with DAC
I didn't think it was fair to change anything," added the former national team mainstay
Other clubs were also interested in the services of the now 39-year-old native of Handlova
none of them was as concrete and factual as this one
One of my conditions was that I wanted to stay in Slovakia
to prepare myself for possible further engagements," he explained
The facilities and academy in the south of the country are among the best across Slovakia
The new sporting director's tasks will extend beyond the city
"We've talked about specific goals
but it's definitely not a one-season project
we also talked about moving the teams in Gyor and Samorin
"I will do everything I can to be as helpful as possible and to help us get closer to our ambitions
but preferably to achieve them," concluded Skrtel
Managing director Jan van Daele and new sporting director Martin Skrteldac1904.sk / Lelkes Ernő"Martin offers the ideal profile for the position of sporting director
as he knows the world of football in detail
has a wealth of playing experience at the highest level and also leadership skills
He joins the club structure after the close of the transfer window
"Because it gives him the space to observe and assess players
squad and team chemistry without having to change a lot of things immediately
This is a new and big step in his career and as a club
we are ready to support him through this challenge
We wish him every success," said CEO Jan van Daele
At club level, Skrtel left his biggest mark at Liverpool
He won the League Cup with The Reds in the 2011/12 season
He won two domestic league titles, first with Zenit St Petersburg (2007) and thirteen years later with Istanbul Basaksehir
with whom he won the Slovak Cup two years ago after beating rivals Slovan Bratislava in the final
He was awarded as the best footballer in Slovakia four times (2007
2012) and once as Liverpool's player of the season (2012)
A recent incident in Slovakia has brought to light ongoing sensitivities surrounding the term “Felvidék” (Upper Region)
which is the historical Hungarian word for the region
it remains a highly charged and often taboo expression in Slovakia even though it is a mere geographic designation. The matter arose after a series of events tied to the term
which led local authorities to question the mayor of the Hungarian-majority town of Dunajská Streda / Dunaszerdahely
This development serves as a reminder of the complicated and at times contentious relationship between Slovakia’s largest ethnic minority and the broader Slovak political and social landscape
Mayor Hájos organized a gallop in his town called the “Felvidéki Vágta” or Upper Region Gallop
a purely cultural and sporting event with no political undertones
the Slovak Intellectuals’ Association (SIA)
filed a complaint against the mayor falsely accusing him of promoting an ideology that suppresses fundamental rights and fosters nationalistic hate by being involved in the event
The prominent Slovak organization argued that the use of the term “Felvidék” was a “revanchist” expression aimed at reasserting Hungarian territorial claims over areas in Slovakia that are historically tied to Hungarian culture and heritage
leading to the mayor’s interrogation by the police.
In his official statement posted on social media
Mayor Hájos expressed his disbelief at the turn of events
saying that “Whether it’s the Felvidéki Vágta or the Felvidéki Festival
neither event has any political connotation
These are sports and cultural events that celebrate heritage and bring people together,” he stated
pointing out that the event even included a Slovakian horse rider who qualified for Hungary’s National Gallop competition
The mayor further questioned the motives of the SIA
suggesting that their official complaint could be part of a broader agenda to intimidate Slovakia’s Hungarian minority
To drive us away from our homeland?” he asked
expressing concern that such actions could escalate tensions between Slovak and Hungarian communities in the country
He asked further if the true intent by the unfounded complaint was to undermine the rights of Slovakia’s Hungarians
brand them with negative labels such as “racist,” “Nazi,” or “fascist.”
While the mayor remains steadfast in his position that such events are harmless celebrations of cultural heritage
the incident reflects a wider trend of growing sensitivity to anything that might be perceived as challenging the national narrative in Slovakia
it raises important questions about freedom of expression and the boundaries of acceptable discourse in a multicultural society
the question remains: Is the term “Felvidék” still a taboo in Slovakia
and what does this mean for the future of Hungarian-Slovak relations

was on the verge of a move to England - but the deal fell through
Matej Trusa may hail from eastern Slovakia
Since arriving at DAC Dunajská Streda in July 2023
the 24-year-old forward has established himself as a key figure
His numbers this season tell the story: 22 competitive matches
Trusa has inevitably drawn interest from abroad
Polish media recently reported that Legia Warsaw, one of the most storied clubs in Poland, have been tracking him closely, reports Hospodárske noviny
Legia’s need for attacking reinforcements is no secret
with Spanish forward Marc Gual shouldering much of the burden
Trusa was reportedly on their radar—alongside fellow Slovak Róbert Boženík of Boavista in Portugal—but DAC’s €1.5 million asking price proved a stumbling block
“Legia considered Trusa,” Polish football journalist Piotr Koźmiński told Hospodárske noviny
Trusa’s market value currently stands at €1.2 million
Financially stable under owner Oszkár Világi
the club see him as a central piece of their project
With two and a half years remaining on his contract and no internal pressure to cash in
they showed interest in Slovak defender Sebastian Kóša of Spartak Trnava
a bigger deal in Slovak football has taken centre stage: David Strelec’s near-record move to England
The Slovan Bratislava striker was the subject of bids from Middlesbrough and Celtic
with Boro willing to pay close to €10 million—an amount that would have shattered the record for a transfer from the Slovak league
Slovan claim it was a matter of timing. “We weren’t far from an agreement with Celtic and other clubs, but we didn’t reach the final phase of negotiations,” owner Ivan Kmotrík Jr. told Šport.sk
For Strelec, the disappointment was hard to hide. He had his heart set on England, having previously pushed through a move to Spezia in Italy. Back in domestic action last weekend, he scored and assisted in Slovan’s win at Ružomberok, but his post-match words hinted at frustration.
Asked how he felt, he replied with a wry smile: “Fantastic. Never been better.”
Pressed on whether he was struggling to come to terms with the failed transfer, he admitted: “Not really struggling, but some things sting. Some things you just can’t control.”
Strelec had been one of Slovan’s standout performers in European competition, catching the eye of scouts. Whether those suitors will still be watching in the summer remains to be seen.

I’m really happy to be representing our team with the leader’s jersey
This was the first step for us in the race and we hope to keep this jersey within our team for the rest of the week

Rural areas of Slovakia experience 'transport poverty'
taboo literature uncovered in 20th century Bratislava
and Slovakia Is Europe protests sweep Slovakia again
Good evening. Here is the Friday, March 21 edition of Today in Slovakia - the main news of the day in less than five minutes
Hungarian veterinarians detected foot-and-mouth disease at a cattle farm in Kisbajcsi
marking its first appearance there in 50 years
Slovak authorities implemented preventive measures
especially in southern regions near the Hungarian border
“The director of the Regional Veterinary and Food Administration has just informed me that all three samples received yesterday tested positive,” said Pavol Majerčák, chair of the board at agricultural firm Agročat and vice-chair of Medzičilizie, another operator, in an interview with Polnoinfo.sk
Foot-and-mouth disease is a viral infection that primarily affects hooved animals
The main symptoms of the disease include a high fever
It spreads easily through direct contact and via the air
and humans can further spread the virus through agricultural machinery
and vehicle tires that have come into contact with the virus
it is standard practice to cull all affected animals
Foot-and-mouth disease has been confirmed in three cattle farms in southern Slovakia
owned by Ján Sabol and Oszkár Világi
CEO of the Slovnaft refinery in Bratislava
The farms are all located near a Hungarian village where the disease was previously detected
Agriculture Minister Richard Takáč (Smer) confirmed the outbreak before Friday’s government meeting
the Czech Republic announced border checks with Slovakia and a ban on importing livestock
Minister Takáč announced that all affected cattle will be vaccinated and then culled
but they will also be culled as the vaccine only helps slow the spread
Additional animals may need to be euthanised as part of the measures
Chief Veterinary Officer Martin Chudý has outlined extensive precautions
Government measures to contain the spread of foot-and-mouth disease:
Culling of susceptible animals within a three-kilometre radius of the outbreak
This will likely include hoofed animals such as cattle
Ban on forest access across the entire Komárno and Dunajská Streda districts
Restrictions on animal transport at the Medveďov
and Bratislava-Rajka (old road) border crossings
Animal transit will be allowed only on designated routes
where customs officers and veterinary inspectors will conduct checks
Disinfection points will be set up on district roads in Dunajská Streda and Komárno
requiring all traffic in the affected areas to pass through them
where animals will no longer be allowed to gather
Ban on the movement of susceptible animals from one farm to another
including washing and changing clothes when moving between animals and home environments
People and farms will also have the option to quickly send animals to rendering plants
with a site to be selected for this purpose

DAC was two points behind their Bratislavan opposition
they would have gone one point ahead with two games left to play

With the help of EU funds, a district heating system in the town of Dunajská Streda, in southern Slovakia, was made more energy efficient. The work improved the system’s reliability, decreased operating costs and reduced its environmental impact.
The project replaced the existing hot-water system with a new two-pipe system and constructed compact heat exchange stations. These measures increased the efficiency of operation and stabilised heat and domestic hot water supply for households in district of Mlyny, in the town of Dunajská Streda.
The operator of the district heating system, Southerm, carried out the modifications to reduce the heat losses of the old system and in turn, answer the demand for heat for one of the town’s districts, Mlyny.
The upgraded system supplies heat through an insulated two-pipe hot-water system. It has several new compact heat exchanger stations connected to the existing gas boiler room of the district’s main heating facility, K18. K18 provides heat for all residents of Mlyny.
The new exchange stations have been constructed at specific off-take points, to maximise the system’s availability and reach. The two-pipe hot-water system has been insulated to avoid energy losses during distribution from the boiler to homes.
The new system has contributed substantially to reducing the facility’s environmental footprint. An energy audit showed that greenhouse gas emissions decreased by 226.56 tonnes in the first year of the new system’s operation. Energy savings were estimated at 1 105.18 MWh for the same period.
The modifications increased the reliability of the system and reduced operating costs.
The project has contributed to the country’s energy savings goals, set out in the EU’s national energy efficiency action plans for 2020.
Total investment for the project “Reconstruction of central heat supply of circuit K18 - Mlyny” is EUR 1 456 824, with the EU’s European Regional Development Fund contribution of EUR 1 238 300 through the Operational Programme “Quality of Environment” for the 2014-2020 programming period. The investment falls under the priority “Energy efficient low-carbon economy in all sectors”.

March 25 (TASR) – The execution of ten members of the Papay criminal gang in Dunajska Streda (Trnava region) 20 years ago was the biggest mass murder in the history of both Czechoslovak and Slovak criminology
former head of the Slovak investigating authorities and current university lecturer Jaroslav Ivor has told TASR
“There’s a need to say that these groups did well for several reasons
One was that our legislation wasn’t prepared to react to these new forms of crime in a prompt and effective manner
Another was that organised crime started to build a network of contacts with some members of the police
but in particular the Slovak Intelligence Service [SIS]
in order to thwart detection and the effective prosecution of their members,” said Ivor
who was involved in investigating dozens of murders and other serious crimes in the past
the nineties in Slovakia saw great brutality
there was an inner brutality involving organised groups ‘putting their own members in order’
The law of secrecy – omerta – was unambiguously in place
and anyone who defied this was punishable by death
There was a similar situation with the so-called ‘white horses’ [frontmen]
who were physically eliminated after serving their purpose
these gangs waged wars for control of certain territories
and the methods used to eliminate both Mafia bosses and other gang members were aggressive,” stated Ivor
Ivor was asked whether he would compare ‘the wild nineties’ to the present
crime has changed over time in Slovakia as well
We can talk about a certain reduction in the crime rate in absolute figures
We can state that crime has changed its forms and is more sophisticated now
brutal crime into economic crime that is extremely difficult to detect and prove.”
Ivor was also asked how Slovak criminologists deal with organised crime and how are they doing in clearing up old cases
“In the nineties respect and authority were built up by individual groups in a very violent and brutal manner
and the police had limited options for detecting these groups and obtaining evidence against them
leftovers from combat between organised groups
and evidence of the actual perpetrators of these brutal crimes is coming to light”
Legislation and cooperation from criminals helps
“Many Mafia members have begun to reveal what happened 10-20 years ago,” said Ivor
The massacre of the gang led by Tibor Papay took place on March 25
entered the bar and shot dead ten members of the Papay gang with machine guns
The train is expected to help carry passengers to the capital during the morning rush hour
A new passenger train was added to the busy railway section between Dunajská Streda and Bratislava on October 1
This was possible thanks to the decision of transport company Metrans /Danubia/
which withdrew one of its international cargo trains dispatched during the morning rush hour
freeing up the rails for another passenger train
The new passenger train is operated by the private carrier RegioJet
It departs from Dunajská Streda on weekdays at 5:53
with the arrival to Bratislava scheduled for 7:02
The route is designed to redistribute passengers using the most occupied train
Kvetoslavov and Bratislava is among the busiest railway sections
After RegioJet joined the integrated transport system in the Bratislava Region this April
RegioJet introduced recruitment plans for its new line between Bratislava and Prague
It wants to hire 30 new train stewards and chief guards
RegioJet is seeking people for part-time and temporary jobs,” said the carrier’s spokesperson Martin Žarnovický
adding that this is why they plan to organise an open door day at the Bratislava main railway station on October 4
The company is also seeking stewards and drivers for its buses
expected to increase the transport capacity of the trains
„Taiwo počas jesene ukázal svoje schopnosti a prednosti
Prajem mu veľa úspechov a pekných momentov v našom klube,“ citoval klubový web športového riaditeľa DAC-u Jana Van Daeleho
Bývalý hráč Abees Academy Abuja a nigérijskej reprezentácie do 23 rokov bol členom širšieho kádra olympijského výberu Nigérie pre OH 2016 v Riu de Janeiro
Vzbudil však pozornosť európskych klubov a napokon zakotvil v tureckom Bursaspore
kde počas jari 2017 hrával za družstvo do 19 rokov
Následne pôsobil v Zbrojovke Brno a vlani sa stal hráčom Nitry. Počas jesene zasiahol do všetkých 18 kôl Fortuna ligy, pripísal si štyri góly a tri asistencie.
Viac vlakov, nové trasy, rýchlejšie spojenia a lepšia prípojovosť.
Vďaka zdieľanému paušálu teraz platia za mobil menej až o tretinu.
Hrtús, Kolník, Pupák a M. Štefanka hodnotia striebornú sezónu.

This gruesome photograph was taken by Ministry of Interior officials minutes after 10 people were shot dead by mafia in the southern Slovak city of Dunajská Streda. 114 bullets were fired in less than a minute.photo: TASR/Interior Ministry
On March 25, at about 19:00, three masked men entered the Fontana restaurant in the southern Slovak town of Dunajská Streda and opened fire on the customers, killing 10 people. The gruesome mass murder was the largest in Slovak history.
According to Jaroslav Ivor, director of the Interior Ministry's investigation section, all victims had ties to the Slovak criminal underworld. "I can confirm that all persons who were shot were related to one of the victims, Tibor P. [Tibor Pápay], said to be the boss of the Dunajská Streda underworld," he said, adding that all victims had "colourful criminal records."
Eyewitnesses (one waiter and 14 guests) reported that the three gunmen entered the Fontana bar-restaurant in the early evening using a back entrance from the restaurant's kitchen. "They wore military clothes, bullet-proof vests and black hoods," said the waiter.
The murderers ordered the clientele of the bar to lie on the floor, shouting "this is a police raid, everybody get down." After the customers had obeyed their instructions, the three men ran up to the first floor and opened fire, killing nine young men on the spot. The tenth man died approximately two hours later in a local hospital.
According to the Interior Ministry's Ivor, the firing lasted for about a minute. "The murderers shot 114 bullets at ten targeted men and each was hit several times," he said, adding that after the shooting the three men left the restaurant, using an unidentified car.
Ivor guessed that the mass murder had been very carefully planned, since the victims were unarmed and clearly not expecting to be attacked. "It is very likely that several Mafia groups were set to meet in the Fontana restaurant [that evening]," he said, noting the fact that the table at which the men were seated had been laid for a larger party.
Criminal investigators have narrowed the motive for the killings down to three possible scenarios. "The first is that a score was being settled in Dunajská Streda," said Interior Minister Ladislav Pittner at a March 29 press conference. "The second version takes in [gang warfare in] the whole region of southern Slovakia, and the last one points to an international connection - that the murders were ordered from the Czech Republic or Hungary."
Pittner said that the assassins had probably been paid one million dollars for the contract killings.
The Mafia executions provoked a wave of uneasiness among the citizens of Dunajská Streda, which became famous in 1997 when the head of Rudolf H. was cut off and left in a flower pot in front of a department store. Dunajská Streda district had six murders in 1997, far above the national average.
"Yes, they shot these 10 gangsters, but there are more of them here," said a woman who spoke to the daily paper Sme on condition of anonymity. "You're not a local citizen, you don't know what's going on here. If I tell you something today, I'll be scared to walk the streets tomorrow," she said.
Other Slovaks, including the nation's politicians, took the killings as a sign that organised crime had reached intolerable levels. According to official police statistics, five people were killed and four injured in bomb attacks in Slovakia in 1996. The numbers increased to 12 killed and 16 injured in 1997. Figures have not been released for 1998
"I denounce what happened in Dunajská Streda," said Árpád Duka-Zólyomi, a deputy with the government Hungarian Coalition (SMK) party. "It's not just a local issue, it's a nation-wide problem, since the killings were carried out by representatives of the Slovak underworld as a whole," he added.
Imrich Andrejčák, a deputy with the opposition HZDS party, said he thought the country's gun laws should be amended. "It's important... to deter holders of illegal arms," he said.
On March 30, five days after the murder, five of the ten Mafia victims were buried in a local cemetery. According to the SITA news agency, the ceremony was monitored by investigators, since, according to unwritten Mafia laws, the three murderers were supposed to attend the burial.
