2024 at 8:02 PM UTC·2 min readKansas City Chiefs superfan Xaviar Babudar
aka "Chiefsaholic," was sentenced to 17.5 years in prison Thursday for multiple convictions related to a 16-month spree of bank robberies that started in March 2022
one count of money laundering and one count of transporting stolen property across state lines

Babudar confessed to stealing more than $800,000 from 11 banks and credit unions in seven states including Iowa
Babudar then laundered the proceeds through casinos
Prosecutors said that Babudar brandished what appeared to be a gun during the robberies
Per the Kansas City Star
two bank employees who were victimized by Babudar testified or provided written statements at his sentencing hearing
I think about the robbery before I go to work,” one victim wrote in a statement
“I still have nightmares about my bank being robbed,” another said in court
Babudar addressed his crimes during the hearing
“Every day is a reminder of that shame I must carry,” he said
Prior to the revelation of his bank-robbing spree, Babudar was a beloved figure among Chiefs fans and on social media. He was a regular at Chiefs games while dressed up in a wolf costume in homage to the team's mascot KC Wolf
Prosecutors say that Babudar used the proceeds from his bank robberies to fund his attendance at Chiefs games and build the "Chiefsaholic" brand
Babudar was initially arrested in December 2022 in Bixby
he removed his ankle monitor and proceeded to rob two more banks
He was captured by the FBI near Sacramento
Babudar was initially scheduled to be sentenced on July 10

The "ZONe graffiti holic" product was previously released with four different designs by four artists
"ZONe graffiti holic 2024," is the second installment
While the product name on the packaging is listed as "ZONe graffiti holic," ZONe officially refers to it as "ZONe graffiti holic 2024," so I will be reviewing it as ZONe graffiti holic 2024 here as well
I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed
I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages
so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks
collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries
the sweetness and richness are surprisingly light
and the refreshing peach tea flavor is enjoyable
The tea flavor becomes more pronounced as you drink
it forms a perfect peach tea flavor—refreshing and fruity
ZONe graffiti holic 2024 has a flavor very similar (almost the same) to the 2023 release
you’ll undoubtedly enjoy ZONe graffiti holic 2024 as well
this is one of my favorite cans in the ZONe series
The sugar content is on the higher side at 59.5g, so be careful not to drink too much. → Energy Drink Health Risks Ranking
If you search for "ZONe graffiti holic" online
you'll find several products with the same name and similar packaging
This might cause confusion for consumers who are interested in learning more
especially since ZONe tends not to include flavor names in their product titles

I think about having an egg first thing in the morning
I’ve never met a sandwich that isn’t the better for a fried egg
I will eat an omelet for dinner and not think twice
the first city location of a cheekily named Indian eatery
Egg-O-Holic serves dozens of Gujarati-style egg dishes
ranging from soupy curries to flavorful heaps of rice to double-decker egg panini
start there: The anda masala holds one layer of chopped boiled egg in a tingly gravy and one layer of grilled white cheese and raw vegetables between crisp griddled bread
you may end up with a plate of surti gotalo ($9.99)
a tomato-egg curry topped with two sunny-side-up eggs and one thin roti for scooping
which seemed to contain equal amounts of egg
It’s as rich as risotto and as green as the Chicago River on St
then you can turn to the small nonegg section of the menu and enjoy
But this menu makes me want to skip everything else and go on an egg bender

As a former New Yorker, it’s likely that I’ve uttered the phrase, “I’m so busy” about 10 billion times. Like navigating the L train, it’s a badge of honor to be inundated with something—anything—that qualifies as busyness. In fact, when someone politely asks how you’re doing, it may be rude to give them a bear hug and tell them you’ve had the flu
but it’s perfectly acceptable to inform them that you’re
tells SELF that our brain does not like to be idle and that even though it’s only about 3 percent of our body weight
it uses 20 to 25 percent of our daily energy supply
so we don't just engage ourselves in conversations
but rather in work and activities that have a goal,” he says
“That cultural orientation arises from a belief that what you accomplish is a signal of your value."
the more that you are valued as a person,” Markman notes
And it seems that everyone I know is busy being accomplished these days
Retired folks are swamped with garden club and step aerobics while children’s calendars are jam-packed with everything from tiny tumbling to foreign language
passed the busyness obsession on to our children
but unstructured play is also an important part of growing up
It is something that is missing for many kids amidst the dance lessons
I would often complain to my mother of boredom
(I’m certain that I never once had a play date outside of my own siblings.) Of course
As a full-time working (and mostly single) mother who often took on side jobs for extra cash
being busy was non-negotiable and something she’d never think to boast about
I began walking much faster, often shoving into people who might be blocking the sidewalk, joyfully snapping photos of tall buildings. “MOVE!” I’d yell inside of my head; I had to get to my JOB! Once there, I became even busier with no spare time to stop for a lunch break
eating expensive and sad salads at my desk and complaining about working late into the evening
we’ll make plans three months in advance because we have
This explains the work->stress->unhappiness spiral that I had created by living in a bustling city
The long work day and commute time left few hours for me to enjoy the things I loved in life
And so, my husband and I moved
I often filled my long and “productive” days with mindless hours on social media
because having free time meant something was wrong
But being busy for the sake of being busy meant I still wasn’t doing those things I loved and wanted to make time for (aka
And I wasn’t becoming any more accomplished through my forced busyness
So I asked Markman how to embrace my free time
His advice: Stop using social media and other online distractions as time fillers
He suggests setting the goal to answer emails within 24 hours of receiving them
but not necessarily within the first hour after they arrive
“Check your email a few times a day rather than several times an hour
engage with other social media channels occasionally rather than constantly
That will free up blocks of time to work on bigger projects
and create opportunities to get away from work a bit.”
By following Markman’s advice—which really was so simple, but I needed to hear it from someone else—and starting my workday promptly at 7 A.M., it’s allowed me to log a full day’s work by 4 P.M. That also happens to be the ideal time for an afternoon bike ride
Or pouring a glass of wine and getting cozy on the couch
there’s an incredible amount of joy in these simple pleasures that I was missing out on while being such a busybody
We can all benefit from taking a few minutes to reflect on why we’re so busy
work and other obligations are tough to control
But if you find you’re making yourself busy for the sake of being busy
or fill it with something that fulfills you

I have a friend that I love so much but every time we go out we need to take a picture
I literally wanna do what bad bunny did to that one fan trying to get a picture with him
How do I tell her that we can go out without it being on social media?” – L.W
I know it’s been a while since middle school, which is likely the last time you heard about Greek mythology, but it might behoove you to think back for a moment. Did you ever learn of Narcissus? No worries if you’ve forgotten – here’s the abridged version:
had been prophesied to never love anyone but himself
He became so enamored with his own reflection in a pool of water that he was frozen that way – turned into a Narcissus flower (or what we call a Daffodil)
forever leaning over to peer at himself in the pond
I’m not trying to say that your friend is a narcissist
or that she’s doomed to be swallowed by her own reflection
but it’s a fairly apt analogy for the kind of crooked fate you’re trying to help your friend avoid
tactfully taking criticism is not an easy skill to learn
Now one more time let’s run it back to primary school to visit our old friend the “I” statement
when you’re trying to get through to someone who’s already fairly self conscious – be it in a good or bad way – it might be best to put the emphasis on yourself
to not make them hyper aware of yet another thing they might need to work on
So I’d start here:unpack the way your friend’s behavior makes you feel
It’s always wise to get your own thoughts and feelings in order before bringing another party into the conversation
Why does their behavior specifically affect your experience
Does it hinder your ability to spend quality time with them
“you don’t have to photograph every event because it’s annoying and vain,” – not that you’d be that callous.
It’s often more effective to highlight your own feelings than to verbalize judgments or observations you’ve made about the other person. People don’t like to be called out, and this way you might be able to avoid some of the hostility and defensiveness that comes with being shown something not so lovely about oneself. We’re not in the business of shaming people into changing
at least if you’re looking for an actual adjustment in awareness or behavior
Having a candid confrontation with someone you care about is difficult
But it’s also how we grow in relationships
and how we weed out the people who might be in our story for a chapter or two instead of being a true supporting character
Noticing things in our friendships that need work is just proof that we’re changing – a natural
If your friend is meant to stick it out and be a forever part of your life, showing them you care enough to bring up the awkward and harder things will only bring you closer to each other
Being willing to undertake the task of kneading through those problems will allow the relationship to grow deeper
keeping it to yourself or hoping it might resolve on its own isn’t always advised
We’ve all been told not to bottle our feelings
You’re almost always better off just being honest and honoring your own emotions
and you deserve to feel just as seen and heard.
or to at least alleviate some of the pressure of initiating a confrontation that could easily turn into a ‘you vs
it could be useful to back up what you’re saying
Because there’s actually evidence for the argument that staying present is best
and it might strengthen your case to show her that it’s not just you who thinks she should leave her phone in her bag for the night
The age of the iPhone has had us all questioning at one point or another whether always having a camera on us and constantly documenting our activities is actually helping us experience and remember the events better
The omnipotent NPR people have graciously answered this question for us, and they found out that behavior like your friend’s actually encourages our brains to “outsource” or “offload” the memories we hyper-document
you’re really only educating them and helping their hippocampus hold onto all the dirty deets of ladies night
Chances are good that your friend is already aware of their behavior, at least to some degree, and that this conversation won’t come completely out of left field. But it still might sting a bit to have someone close to them take issue with it, especially in a day and age where people watch concerts and fashion shows through their screens while they tape them
Constantly photographing has become so normalized
and maybe this is the kind and gentle wake-up call that your friend really needs to help her stay grounded in her own life.
Cushioning your communication by using “I” statements and ‘backing up’ your opinion with an objective-as-possible memory study should really help absorb the ick here – and prove that you’re invested enough to bring more to the conversational table than frustration and opinions

What have you accomplished in the last 24 hours
Lucy is the New School Free Press’ weekly advice column,…
The loyal followers of this southeast ’cue joint can easily justify their obsession
a few minutes before Smoke-a-Holics opened its doors at 11 a.m.
I joined a line of Smoke-a-Holic veterans and newbies eager for a taste of slow-smoked barbecue goodness
like a performer parting the curtain to see how many people are in the audience
Derrick Walker peers out from the front door to see an eager audience ready for their ’cue
He cheerfully gets everyone in line situated inside to make the maximum use of space for the 20 or so people
one can hear the sound of steady chopping as Walker’s kitchen crew busily fills orders
This journey to an in-demand pitmaster started when Walker was about 12 years old
he helped his grandfather at family functions by starting and stoking the fire of his offset trailer smoker
When he and his wife were able to get their own place
he had what he described as a “rinky-dink” trailer smoker that would allow him to make barbecue for family and friends
and he started taking orders and doing pop-ups in the Meadowbrook neighborhood in the early 2000s — well before pop-ups became a trend
Walker realized how far his passion and skills could take him when he discovered the world of competitive barbecue
and he registered the name Smoke-a-holics for catering and event vending
he got to know and became friends with the local craft barbecue community that includes the folks from Panther City BBQ
and they collaborate rather than compete as they work in tandem to grow Fort Worth’s reputation as a barbecue destination
the owners of Panther City BBQ offered Walker a trailer they were no longer using
Fort Worth’s unstoppable demand for barbecue and Walker’s hard work allowed him to not only pay off that trailer within a year
but he was also able to start thinking about opening a brick-and-mortar location
When a location on the southeast side of Fort Worth opened up
it seemed as if fate brought him back to serve his old neighborhood
it’s clear that he’s filling a void for nearby residents
He’s had lines out of his door since opening day
a new customer questions the fuss and asks if it is indeed “that good”
Several other customers knowingly chime in with confidence
“Yes!” One goes so far as to say you’ll be hooked after this visit
we make our way to picnic benches in a small
grassy seating area near the wood structure that holds the large
Just like sitting in someone’s backyard for a friendly get-together
and kids are playing while everyone surrounding us enjoys their meal
Walker puts his own twist on Central Texas-style barbecue
I can indeed taste the soul in his barbecue staples — ribs and brisket
and sweet potato pie round out the menu selections with a homey touch
His rib tips are a revelation and could easily put him on the map; they’re an all-at-once meaty and fatty nugget that has a sweet
And his loyal customers are right — I’m hooked

VENICE — The city of Venice ethics compliance officer found no basis for the ethics complaint filed Nov
against then-mayor John Holic by former Venice City Council Member Deborah Anderson for his fast-tracking the appointment of two members of the Venice Planning Commission in his last meeting as mayor
Anderson was asking that the city nullify the appointments so that Mayor Ron Feinsod could choose his own candidates
Holic nominated both Shaun Graser and Barry Snyder for reappointment ahead of the February expiration of their term
and the five-member board present approved their reappointment unanimously
He said at the time both men wanted to stay on the commission through the rewrite of the city’s land development regulations
The complexity of that rewrite was cited by Holic as his main reason to reappoint Snyder
who serves as chairman of the planning commission
the Sarasota-based attorney contracted to serve as the city’s ethics compliance officer
along with several other findings in discounting Anderson’s complaint
“The ethics code of the City of Venice was never intended to deal with the rough and tumble which occurs during candidates’ campaigns for City Council or their aftermath
unless of course there is a clear violation of the code,” Toale wrote in his disposition of the case
“Most of these disputes have a political solution as does this dispute.”
Toale also noted that city code would not have authorized him to nullify the appointments anyway
Anderson asserts that Holic violated the city’s code of ethics for appropriate conduct nine times by nominating the two men
She asserted a 10th violation for inappropriate conduct because he may improperly gain from the decision
should either choose to donate for his 2020 campaign for the Sarasota County Commission
Toale relied on an investigation conducted by Venice Human Resources Director Alan Bullock
the man who would typically handle ethics issues
When the city’s code of ethics was last authored
then city manager Marty Black was the ultimate ethics compliance officer
the code was rewritten to simply state the compliance officer would be the city manager or their designee
No other area municipality or county has an in-house process for ethics investigations of elected officials
with those cases typically filed with the state
a spokesperson for the Florida League of Cities said the association does not track such matters
The city tapped Toale as an ethics officer to deal with complaints filed against elected officials last September
after Venice resident Dawn Champiny sought to file one with the city against then council member Bob Daniels
who used his city-issued iPad to conduct a background search on her and then emailed the results to his wife’s private email address — an act that placed the results on the city’s public email web server
Former Venice City Council member Sue Lang also filed a complaint with the city against Daniels that month
claiming he lied about her during a campaign forum while he was running for mayor
Venice Code Enforcement Officer George Nixon filed a complaint with the city against Daniels in October
claiming that the council member threatened his job after the Oct
16 Venice Aviation Society candidate forum
Those complaints opened the door for Anderson to file her complaint
neither Champiny nor Lang properly filed their complaints with the city
Nixon dropped his complaint after Daniels lost the election
so the only investigation Bullock completed and delivered to Toale was the one filed by Anderson against Holic
“Since Mayor Holic’s role in the reappointments was merely to propose them
and since the proposal was subject to substantial discussion at the meeting then approved by the City Council
Recent research suggests that processed foods that are high in added sugar and fat can be addictive
chips and chocolate are among the foods that people said were hard to stop eating

A judge ordered the Kansas City Chiefs superfan who committed a series of bank robberies to pay $10.8 million to a Bixby
teller he threatened with a gun in December 2022
$3.6 million for inflicting physical harm and emotional distress and $7.2 million in punitive damages
did not immediately respond to a request for comment
Garcia's attorney, Frank Frasier, acknowledged Monday that it will be a challenge to collect the money. Babudar was unemployed and living in cars at the time of his crimes. He reached a federal plea agreement in February
admitting to stealing more than $800,000 in 11 robberies across seven states and laundering the proceeds through casinos
The plea deal requires him to pay at least $532,675 in restitution to the financial institutions he robbed
"But the point is two things," Frasier told ESPN
say he does the Lifetime or Hallmark movie ..
anything he obtains from that will be paid to his creditors
"The second part overall is this: The judge sent a message that you cannot profit from crime
Babudar, 29, built a large social media following as @Chiefsaholic on X and Instagram, cultivating the image of an ambitious, generous young man who enjoyed gambling, Kansas State sports and, most of all, the Chiefs. However, an ESPN investigation revealed that much of what he portrayed about himself online was not true
after fleeing the Tulsa Teachers Credit Union
where he pointed at black CO2 pistol at Garcia and demanded she give him "the 100s" or he'd put a bullet in her head
He was released on bond in February 2023, and a month later, after receiving $100,000 in winnings from two bets on the Chiefs, escaped. He evaded authorities for nearly four months before being apprehended July 7
Babudar is currently at Leavenworth federal prison in Kansas and is scheduled to be sentenced in July
Frasier said Garcia had to leave her job after the robbery and is still dealing with the trauma of the crime
"She'll never be able to go back into work in banking
I know this sounds crazy, but sometimes, fictional characters become your friends. After plunging head-first into M.C. Beaton’s best-selling Agatha Raisin Mystery Series (Minotaur)
that’s exactly how I feel about the blundering
Her misadventures are so over-the-top hilarious and her cast of supporting characters is so colorful that you wish they were your friends
And who wouldn’t want to visit a pal who lives in a cozy cottage in the Cotswolds
(Carsely was a quaint village free of murders until Agatha arrived!)
Agatha Raisin possesses all the personality flaws I wouldn’t tolerate in real life but she thrills me
Perhaps it’s because Agatha has a heart of gold
which is probably pickled from all the alcohol she’s guzzled
determination and insecurities make me root for her to find happiness like the rest of us
and I’m hoping to convert you as well with my favorite Agatha adventures
Agatha Raisin and the Quiche of Death (Book 1)
Middle-aged workaholic Agatha Raisin always dreamed of retiring to a cozy village in the Cotswolds
After years of busting her chops as one of London’s top PR reps
sells her agency and moves to the village of Carsely and her thatched-roof cottage on Lilac Lane
abrasive personality is an impediment to making friends in her new town
so she decides to “go local” by entering a local baking contest
Agatha purchases her entry from an upscale delicatessen in London
believing that a blue ribbon will make her the toast of Carsely
Her recipe for social advancement sours when Judge Cummings-Brown keels over dead after eating her quiche
making her even more of an outsider until she helps capture the culinary killer
the book introduces readers to a colorful supporting cast: former assistant Roy Silver
neighbor/love interest James Lacey and Detective Bill Wong
who all prove that Agatha is more lovable than she believes
Agatha Raisin and the Murderous Marriage (Book 5)
wedding bells are finally ringing for Agatha
which Agatha has neglected to reveal to her fiancé; she’s still married to her first husband
She hasn’t seen or heard from Jimmy in thirty years
and believing (and hoping) he’s dead of alcohol poisoning
she’s ready to gallop down the aisle with James … until Jimmy stumbles into Carsely on the eve of their nuptials
Agatha faces murder charges when Jimmy is found strangled the next morning
everyone in Carsely believes she’s a murderess
He and Agatha discover both Jimmy’s nefarious past and the other suspects who’d want him permanently silenced
Agatha Raisin and the Terrible Tourist (Book 6)
No one can ever accuse Agatha of giving up on love
She’s determined to win James back and departs Carsely to track him down at their intended honeymoon location of Cyprus
Until she can pinpoint his exact whereabouts
obnoxious tourists who are not who they seem
The murder of one tourist at a disco reunites James and Agatha
the two then playing amateur detective to find the killer and prove their innocence
Beaton treats the reader to a marvelous romp around Cyprus
Agatha’s excessive attempts to rekindle a romance with James and all hell breaking loose when Sir Charles Fraith appears on the island
Agatha Raisin and the Wizard of Evesham (Book 8)
Feeling her age and nursing the rejection by her flame
Agatha succumbs to the charms of a handsome

February 27 (TASR) - Czech and Slovak farmers and food producers
met at the Hodonin-Holic border crossing on Thursday to block the road and express their opposition to the Mercosur agreement and to food imports from third countries. According to Slovak Farm and Food Chamber head Andrej Gajdos
the border crossing was closed between 10 a.m
diverting traffic from the town of Holic towards the town of Skalica
"The basic message of this protest was to express dissatisfaction with foreign policy
as well as with trade with third countries
and with the upcoming agreements with Mexico and Thailand," Gajdos told TASR. Czech Agricultural Chamber president Jan Dolezal noted that third countries commonly use substances that are banned in Europe
"We have bans on the use of certain plant protection products here
we don't use antibiotics to such an extent
while these things are commonly used there
and we perceive this as a threat to food safety in our countries and as a potential threat to our consumers," Dolezal told TASR. The farmers expect politicians to consider their arguments and demand the exclusion of the farm and food sector from agreements with third countries. The Slovak and Czech farmers were later joined by their peers from Hungary and Austria
"The Germans are protesting at the border crossings with the Czech Republic," said Dolezal
Mindy and Danny run into trouble when Danny tells his new priest
After five years of socking away extra cash
had been working full-time jobs and hustling on the weekends inside a sweltering barbecue food truck
We had everything ready to buy a house,” Derrick said
She insisted they put their original plan on the back burner so the couple could instead buy a barbecue joint
I thought this is it—it’s time,” Kesha told me
standing in the pit room at Smoke-A-Holics BBQ in Fort Worth
The couple opened the doors August 1 to a line that stretched down the sidewalk
and the neighborhood’s demand for their barbecue hasn’t let up since
Kesha hadn’t been so sure about Derrick’s previous barbecue venture
he’d bought a trailer-mounted smoker of dubious quality
The grates sat on the bottom,” he said of the smoker fashioned from an old water heater
and I made it work.” Derrick loaded that smoker with meat and parked it outside Kesha’s salon
His barbecue got so popular the police would stop to shoo the line of people out of the parking lot
“I was doing pop-ups before pop-ups were cool,” Derrick told me
Kesha was impressed enough with his sales to let him trade up to a better smoker
she suggested they upgrade to a food truck
Derrick convinced his wife and son to help him operate the truck on weekends
He didn’t want to bring on an investor
but the family didn’t have enough money to pay for the used trucks he was finding for sale
That’s when his old friends Chris Magallanes and Ernie Morales
who operate Panther City BBQ in Fort Worth
which the Walkers could pay out of their profits each month
Smoke-A-Holics BBQ was on the road starting in July of last year
It didn’t seem like an ideal location for a number of reasons
This area of southeast Fort Worth is changing rapidly
and Smoke-A-Holics is part of the revitalization
The Walkers created a barbecue joint that showed off Derrick’s talent with Central Texas-style barbecue
but they also wanted to make sure they served the neighborhood’s needs
That means $11 for a giant stuffed baked potato and $17 for a three-meat plate that would easily feed two people
but it’s just $6 a pound for the ribs tips
I asked him if it was a challenge to strike that balance
“If you feel like it’s a good value
but I need it to be profitable,” he said
“I don’t need to add $2 or $3 a pound to reach the next tax bracket.”
I got in line behind two black women and a black man
Four black men in ties walked in behind me
I was one of only two white people in the restaurant
I point this out only because I’m rarely in the minority at a barbecue joint where the lines form before the place opens and never at a by-the-pound place serving smoked meats lovingly arranged on trays
as some did on Twitter when I pointed it out
a black man serving barbecue in a black neighborhood
You don’t go to these places and a see a line of black people a mile long,” but such is the demand he has enjoyed every weekend since opening
Some of those new customers aren’t so sure about the difference between fatty and lean brisket
Derrick recently posted a chart explaining the difference to the Smoke-A-Holics Facebook page
There are also plenty of folks angry at him when the joint sells out
The 1,000-gallon smoker in the back has already reached capacity
they’re already considering an expansion
The daytime staff is made up mostly of family
is an extern from a culinary school in Fort Worth
He graduates later this month and did his full externship at Smoke-A-Holics
Derrick works the late nights and early mornings alone
and that didn’t go so smoothly recently
he pulls the finished briskets off the smoker and puts them in the warmer to hold overnight
He then trims and seasons all the raw briskets that will go on the next morning
the briskets weren’t done until 1 a.m
he got home in time for two hours of sleep before he was back at the restaurant by 5 a.m
Two employees were out of commission the next morning
so he had to prep the meat and make the sides himself
“Usually my ribs and everything go on about 6 a.m
Early wrap.” I came in for lunch the next day
and he said he hung his head when he saw me at the register
I loved the sides of greens and Cajun cream corn
made by Kesha (her Coca-Cola cake and banana pudding are also worthy)
a concoction Derrick invented for the food truck
A scoop of smoked mac & cheese goes in the bottom of a plastic cup
A second visit showed me the version of Smoke-A-Holics I’d been hearing about
The sliced brisket was phenomenally tender
but also garlic and a few other things he wouldn’t divulge
Slices of turkey were perfectly moist with just enough of the pecan smoke
“I don’t have time to make sausage
I don’t have the space either,” he admitted
Broccoli rice casserole, which was very good
He’s noticed the trend of Tex-Mex barbecue
I joked that he might be the only new barbecue spot in Texas not serving some form of pork belly burnt ends
“I don’t want to do what everybody else is doing,” he quickly retorted
Do you.” That sums up pretty well why he returned home to serve high-quality barbecue to his old neighborhood

SARASOTA COUNTY — Venice Mayor John Holic filed paperwork Thursday to run for Sarasota County Commission District 5 in 2020
Though the County Commission is a partisan election
so he would likely face both Republican and Democrat candidates in the general election

was among the 11,345 striking air traffic controllers fired by President Ronald Regan in 1981
Holic switched to Democrat and got into the brokerage business with A.G
he registered with no party affiliation and ran for mayor in 2010
He won a three-way race against Harry Walia and Marshall Happer
“I did that when I ran for mayor because it was a nonpartisan election and I stayed with it now because
I want to do what’s right for the people,” Holic said
“I don’t want to do what’s right for either party.”
Holic won his second term unopposed in 2013
and bested Frankie Abbruzzino in 2016 to win his third term
He thinks party-line votes both in Tallahassee and Washington
have hurt both the state and federal government process
they really should be listening to what the people say,” Holic said
“The Republican Party isn’t always right and the Democratic Party isn’t always right
is the first candidate to file for the District 5 seat that is occupied by current Sarasota County Commission Chairman Charles Hines
who cannot run again because of term limits
The November 2020 County Commission election will be decided by single-member districts
as per the results of a voter-approved charter amendment referendum in 2018
So far, North Port Mayor Chris Hanks, a Republican, and North Port Charter Review Board chairman Cory Hutchinson
Both Detert and Moran are eligible to run for a second term

Holic has been an advocate for construction of affordable housing and the economic redevelopment of the Seaboard area of Venice
which is east of the Intracoastal Waterway and west of U.S
though he points to Sarasota County’s unwillingness to entertain any discussion of creating a Community Redevelopment Agency for the Seaboard area — which includes unincorporated Sarasota County as well — as one of several areas where the county has refused to account for the needs of the municipalities
I’ve been trying to sit down and talk with them about a CRA and the only answer I got back is ‘We don’t like CRAs
didn’t you see what happened in Sarasota?” Holic said
let’s talk about what went wrong and how we prevent it from happening again,” he added
The city of Sarasota County and Sarasota County feuded over the payment schedule for the 30-year downtown Community Redevelopment Agency

The city of Sarasota County and Sarasota County eventually worked things out and are currently contemplating a tax-increment financing district to fund The Bay Park Project
negotiations between the city and county on a variety of subjects
ranging from parks maintenance to consolidation of the fire department and later the city’s assumption of ambulance service have all been torturous

It’s the time of year when we get outside and curse at weeds
which means I’ll be refusing garden gloves in favor of the feeling of dark
rich terra firma underneath my fingernails
It’s time to get in touch with nature again
and - ouch - I think I just got a splinter
I have already gotten a splinter or two while gardening during this brief season
but have you ever come across a splinter word
a splinter word isn’t any word involving wood; in fact
a splinter is part of a larger word used in forming a new “splinter” word.
An alcoholic suffers from an addiction to alcohol (the proper
modern terminology is that someone suffers from alcohol use disorder).
More Grammar Guy: Placeholder names for every Tom, Dick and Harry
It doesn’t stand alone as its own word
but when someone talks about being a “shopaholic” or “pizzaholic,” we know what the other person means
The “-holic” splinter denotes a dependence on something.
We know that “entertainment” is something created or performed for the amusement of others
So when we see words like “edutainment,” “eatertainment” and “shoppertainment,” we know that those words relate to things that are created for your amusement
would “intertainment” be entertainment designed specifically for the internet
“-tainment” isn’t a suffix
although “-ment” is a suffix having to do with an action or the result of an action
More Grammar Guy: Some volcanic vocalic verbiage
In politics, pundits love using the splinter -nomics. Derived from economics, talking heads fill airtime by taking a part of a politician’s name (usually the president) and turning the leader’s economic plans into a word. It started with “Reaganomics,” referring to President Ronald Reagan’s economic pillars
Later we got “Clintonomics.” But my favorite of the -nomics to say is “Obamanomics.”
Many splinter words begin as slang and then creep into text messages
conversations and even the seventh hour of the “Today Show.” If you’ve heard the word “mansplain,” that happens when a man explains something to a woman in a condescending way
A “mockumentary” is a documentary that is purposefully poking fun at the traditional documentary film style
I’d hate to grammarsplain this topic into the ground
VENICE — Despite requests from both incoming mayor Ron Feinsod and former mayor Ed Martin that the matter should wait until Feinsod takes office
the Venice City Council voted Tuesday to reappoint Barry Snyder and Shaun Graser to the Venice Planning Commission
The terms of both men would have been up in February 2020
Mayor John Holic said he made the unusual move to nominate them because their institutional knowledge was too valuable to lose
to keep continuity on the planning commision,” Holic said
noting that the current board is overseeing the first full rewrite of the city’s land development regulations in two decades
“It’s a long road to rewrite the LDRs; we couldn’t even get to it on the last comprehensive plan because we didn’t understand the last comprehensive plan,” he added
referring to the 2010 document that was rewritten
with a completely new plan adopted in 2017
The planning commission started working on rewriting the city land development codes in February 2018
Vice Mayor Rich Cautero was absent because of the birth of a new grandchild
and Council Member Bob Daniels was absent because of a family medical emergency
Martin — who preceded Holic as Venice mayor — said it would be a courtesy for the current board not to lock in the appointments before Feinsod and two new council members
called the move a “blatant attempt to tie the hands of the council,” and later added
“It’s clearly not appropriate and indicates that you are attempting to influence our city long after your term expires.”
stressed that he didn’t know either individual and may have ultimately moved to have both men reappointed to the board
Holic said the fact that Feinsod had no experience with Snyder and Graser was another factor in his decision to push for an early reappointment
then later added that if the new council has an issue
they can simply ask for their resignations
“To sit here and say I’m preempting someone is really a very naive statement,” Holic said
but both Holic and Council Member Chuck Newsom
who serves as the council’s liaison to the planning commission
said that while both men were interested in serving until the new land development regulations are complete
neither wanted to serve full three-year terms
“We have two people here that we want to keep,” Newsom said
He later added that ultimately the new city council will have to vote to adopt the new land development regulations
The decision to reappoint Snyder and Graser offered one last chance for Holic and Martin to spar while Holic is in office
Martin frequently commented on city issues on his “Inside Venice” Facebook page and
Holic had his predecessor removed from chambers while he tried to rebut a statement made by Daniels
Holic took a veiled jab at Martin when he said that he would never post comments critical of the next board on Facebook
nor would he appear during public comment to question their decisions

Derrick Walker started doing pop-ups before it was cool

he finally landed a permanent spot near Hillside Park two years ago with the help of his wife

Editor’s note: Smoke-A-Holics on Evans Avenue was among the Fort Worth businesses featured in Texas Monthly’s 2021 roundup of the state’s top barbecue restaurants – but we were way ahead of ‘em
The Fort Worth Business Press honored Smoke-A-Holics and owner Derrick Walker with the Small But Mighty Award at our 2020 Top 100 event
Here’s the story we wrote about Walker and his business
Derrick Walker began his culinary journey as a young boy sitting on a tall kitchen stool following his grandmother’s directives to break down collard greens and shuck peas and corn as she prepared dinner
Walker still remembers the time his young taste buds were awe struck when he was introduced to briskets by his grandfather
who had a smoker on a trailer – the first one he ever saw – and taught him how to start a fire
The barbecue flame that burns inside Walker’s brain was sparked a long time ago
He always enjoyed cooking and knew he would do well when given the opportunity. But opportunities were scarce in Southeast Fort Worth neighborhood of Walker’s youth
Walker got his first job working at a Taco Bell location and then for Pizza Hut
Walker worked up and down the channel at Baylor All Saints Healthcare System
He then worked his way up to get into management roles; becoming a supervisor
while also finishing up with culinary school on the side
he was also playing off and on with some of his food business ideas
His first venture was selling barbecue through a trailer-mounted smoker and doing pop-ups around the city more than a decade ago
He also provided catering services.Walker bought a food truck in 2018 and would run it every weekend
His cooking became a hit as people crammed together to get their orders in.When the opportunity to expand finally came
the pit master who specializes in “Texas style BBQ with a soulful twist” did not hesitate. He and his wife
site of a former bakery requiring fair amounts of repairs and upgrades
on Evans Avenue did the trick.“My most challenging time was the first two weeks I was open,” Walker says
“It wasn’t because we didn’t have business
It was because we had so much business that I was overwhelmed.”
the lines of regular patrons and first-timers snake all the way to the parking lot
building up an appetite for some prime brisket or smoked bologna or the special rib tips
The restaurant has a custom-made smoker in the backyard pit room
It has the capacity to cook about 1,000 pounds of meat
Although the business hours notice says open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., the front door sign at Smoke-A-Holics may read “closed” way earlier as they sell out quick and fast.Walker recently purchased the lot right next to the current restaurant site
Smoke-A-Holics will be able to seat about 50 inside and about 25 outside in its patio area
“Hopefully we’ll also get a beer and wine license and be able to have some cold beer on tap too
TVs where you can watch the game and an expanded menu,” Walker says
“I’ve always wanted to have a kind of fried meat
We can expand our menu with some other barbecue related items as well.”Walker says his passion for cooking does not fade as he moves forward. His cooking and now his business have indeed come a long way
“I play the hand I’m dealt and we’re doing all right,” Walker says

It seems obvious where Egg-O-Holic
Yet there is more to the story for this quick-serve Indian restaurant that got its start in suburban Chicago
"This is more about different flavors," franchisee Dhimant Patel said
Egg-O-Holic has replaced Menya Ramen at 331 W
with many items being scarce in central Ohio: lapeti -- a sort of burrito omelet stuffed with shredded hard-boiled eggs and cheese; surti gotalo -- spiced curry covered with two sunny-side-up eggs; and chapata anda -- a double-layered grilled cheese sandwich with sriracha-flavored boiled egg and vegetables
More familiar dishes include the roti roll
a type of bread folded around masala-spiced egg and cheese
The Dublin Egg-O-Holic does not serve alcohol at this time
masala chaas (made with salted buttermilk) and Rajwadi lassi (yogurt and ice cream topped with crushed cashews and almonds)
founded the concept a little more than a year ago in Schaumburg
egg dishes have become very popular," he said
I eat these dishes three times a week when I'm there."
He said he is considering adding more restaurants in Ohio but is focused on the success of the Dublin location
Dhimant Patel's cousin and business partner
said he likes the concept because there are few egg-based Indian restaurants in the U.S
is that all these dishes are made to order," he said
Satori Ramen Bar has opened in the North Market
offers a full view of employees preparing authentic ramen noodle dishes
In addition to dine-in and take-out orders
toppings and uncooked fresh noodles packaged separately so customers can make soups at home
Nishimura trained both in Japan and the U.S
The Veggie Van is back and "better than ever," said Michelle Moskowitz Brown, executive director of Local Matters
will deploy the Veggie Van in mid-July to underserved Columbus neighborhoods -- Linden
the Hilltop and the Near East Side -- where residents have a persistent lack of healthful food options

Tokyo
This hidden gem on the streets of Shibuya specialises in laksa, a spicy Southeast Asian noodle soup made with a rich shrimp-and-coconut broth. The small size laksa costs as little as ¥770, but if you want something a little lighter, the shan yu mazesoba-style noodles (from ¥880) marinated in shrimp oil are the way to go.
All the dishes can be customised, so if you can’t handle the heat, just ask for a lower spice level. Those who like spicy food can upgrade to ‘super hot’ for an additional ¥165. Plus, you can give your laksa a twist with toppings like cheese (¥165), egg (¥165), spinach (¥165), sausage (¥220) and lemon (¥88).
Come here for lunch to get the set meal, which includes a bowl of laksa and a side of Singaporean chicken over rice (from ¥1320). The mild flavours of the chicken and rice pair well with the laksa, counterbalancing the spice from the soup.
In the evening, the restaurant offers izakaya-style dining, so you can enjoy small bites like toast with dried fruit cream cheese or a cilantro lemon salad, while sipping on Tiger beer. If you’re a true laksa-holic, though, don’t worry – you can order a bowl of hearty laksa anytime.

Elisabeth Hasselbeck was the lone conservative voice on "The View"
she stopped focusing on being right about the issues
She wanted to be right with her fellow co-hosts
CBN sat down with her to talk about her former co-workers
"Ten years straight of being at The View table and holding one side of the table by yourself against four voices who are on the other side
you get really good at being right about things
And so now I kind of feel like a recovering 'right-a-holic' where 'Did I leave enough room in those discussions to be wrong enough to be right with the person?'" says Hasselbeck
In her new book, Point of View
Elisabeth writes about the insights she gained during her time as the only conservative co-host on 'The View' – as well as her stints on the shows "Survivor" and "Fox and Friends."
'So that we can be unified in love.' So what does that look like
but wrong enough to hear the other person and be right with them.' Because I don't think He wants us wrong with one another
I'm pretty sure it breaks his heart," she says
Elisabeth also shares with her readers about the strong faith and resiliency her parents instilled in her from a young age
And they just had this optimism and hope to them."
While on "The View," Elisabeth gained notoriety for her heated debates with co-hosts Rosie O'Donnell
I've seen how she loves my family and I've seen her heart and I see how she welcomes people who are not like her
Our minds might not work the same and feel the same about certain things
but I do think what we share is a love for people and a love for friendship."
Another bright spot in her time at "The View" was working with the legendary Barbara Walters
"She's like my broadcasting mom and professor in one
She had tough love for me at times at work
"If you have a mentor who's tough on you sometimes in a refining way
how naturally curious she was to hear their story."
Elisabeth was let go from "The View" in 2013
prompting her to revamp her lifestyle completely
"I've also had some health scares that have come up during really stressful times
so I do believe that stress will push your body to an unhealthy place
So we try to just maintain an active lifestyle and a fun one; this is God's body
After her stint as co-hosting of the morning show
Hasselbeck left after suffering bouts of exhaustion
"I would wake up and needed the word of God
yet I was still trying to do it on my own because I wasn't sure that I was qualified enough to be there," she says
"Getting three hours of sleep for two years straight is unhealthy and brought me to my worst version of myself
I think my departure from Fox was me saying
but I don't have it.' I said it on my last day at Fox and when I announced it: 'It's time for my children and my family to get the best of me
Elizabeth lives with her husband and three children in Nashville
Through all of the recent life changes and transitions
Elisabeth is often reminded of the 'paper bag lessons' she learned from an art teacher
"I was trying to draw this old crinkly paper bag
'How am I going to draw this bag with all these dents and cracks and shadows
'I'm not asking you to draw the cracks and crinkles and cracks on the bag
I'm asking to see how the light hits it and draw that
Draw the light and you'll draw the bag.' And I did," Elisabeth recalls
"So really that's kind of been how I think about all these situations
Because that's God's word and truth and what He wants you to see
whenever you face trials of many kinds because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance
Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete
Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial
When you're working so hard to try to get through
that you realize you can't do this on your own and there's the surrender."
