Following the confirmation of the disease in Hungary in the municipality of Kisbajcs (Györ district), close to the border with Slovakia, the Slovak veterinary authorities established a restriction zone in the border districts of Dunajská Streda and Komárno.
All animal owners must apply rigorous hygiene and disinfection measures in facilities, vehicles, and equipment, and should immediately report any suspicion of the disease to the veterinary authorities. Dead animals should be disposed of only in approved facilities. In addition, all facilities open to the public with susceptible animals, such as zoos and circuses, should be temporarily closed.
These measures aim to rapidly halt the spread of the virus, which is considered a serious threat to the country's animal health.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Hungarian Premier Viktor Orban agreed on the need to fight against irregular migration jointly
October 22 (TASR) - At their meeting in Komarno on Tuesday
stating that the countries situated on the Western Balkans migration route bear a disproportionately big burden when it comes to addressing problems related to irregular migration
reads the joint statement released by the three leaders following their talks. The leaders of Slovakia
Hungary and Serbia have agreed that irregular migration is a serious problem that results from geopolitical instability
conflicts and social inequality in the European neighbourhood
They stressed that irregular migration is a challenge especially for countries on the Western Balkans migration route
which "bear a disproportionate share of the burden in dealing with irregular migration and suppressing human trafficking
as well as other activities related to organised crime." Fico
Orban and Vucic highlighted the role of the Schengen zone
opining that its protection should be accompanied by regional compensatory measures that will ease the pressure on the EU's external borders. In the statement
the leaders stated that the solutions adopted at the EU level don't seem to be sufficient and sustainable and should be supplemented in particular by further strengthening the regional dimension of cooperation in the fight against irregular migration
the situation on the Western Balkan route has improved significantly in recent months
mainly thanks to the measures taken by the governments of Slovakia
Hungary and Serbia. The partners also reiterated their support for Serbia's EU membership and highlighted mutual cooperation
They described the EU enlargement as a "geostrategic investment"
"requires more active involvement of the EU in the Western Balkans region
including in the fight against irregular migration". The leaders of Slovakia
Serbia and Hungary arrived in Komarno to discuss irregular migration and innovative solutions in the fight against it
The foreign affairs ministers of the individual countries formed a part of the delegations as well

SLOVAKIA: The Ministry of Transport & Construction has selected a partnership of state passenger operator ZSSK and Austrian Federal Railways to operate PSO supported services on the 95 km Bratislava – Dunajská Streda – Komárno line for two years from December 13
which has operated the route under contract since taking over from ZSSK in March 2012
the ministry said ZSSK and ÖBB had offered to provide a better quality of service
including the use of air-conditioned rolling stock
at a lower average price of €9·65 per train-km which would reduce the annual subsidy by around €200 000
The existing timetable is to be maintained
with slight modifications to optimise station dwell times
The service will still be integrated with Bratislava’s regional transport network
The ministry had called initially tenders for a 10-year contract on December 31 2019
but potential bidders said the conditions were unrealistic and the schedule too tight
An interim two-year contract was then tendered in March
in order to give more time to procure a long-term contract which will run for 10 years from December 2022
Despite saying the operation was unprofitable
RegioJet had bid to continue running the services using its existing fleet of leased ex-DB Class 628 DMUs and ER20 diesel locomotives hauling former DB double-deck coaches
The operator had proposed to gradually enhance the comfort of the fleet in return for a 10-year contract and a higher level subsidy
but this offer was rejected by the ministry
RegioJet began withdrawing its fleet of Class 643 Bombardier Talent DMUs leased from Alpha Trains
which had been operated on the line from the start of its concession
Services will in future be operated using ÖBB CityShuttle push-pull sets and a ZSSK Bdteer coach hauled by Siemens ER20 Class 2016 diesel locomotives that are currently deployed on Wien – Marchegg – Bratislava REX cross-border services
These will be supplemented by ZSSK Class 754 diesel locomotives and coaches
Less frequent additional services between Dunajská Streda and Komárno will be worked by ZSSK Class 840 three-car Stadler GTW 2/6 DMUs transferred from the High Tatras region
The ministry acknowledged that capacity in the peaks will fall from 500 to 400 seats compared to Regiojet’s double-deck stock
RegioJet reports that it carried 4 million passengers on the line in 2019
compared to just 706 400 in the last full year of ZSSK operation in 2011
SLOVAKIA: The Ministry of Transport has selected Czech open access operator Leo Express for a PSO contract to operate passenger services on the 95 km Bratislava – Dunajská Streda – Komárno line
The contract is intended to run for nine years from December 10 2023
SLOVAKIA: The Ministry of Transport has cancelled a public tender for the operation of passenger services on the 95 km Bratislava – Komárno line
after the only bidder was national passenger operator ZSSK which offered a price that far exceeded the ministry’s expectations
CZECH REPUBLIC: The Ministry of Transport has selected RegioJet for a contract for to operate R23 fast passenger services on the 135 km electrified line between Kolín and Ústí nad Labem-západ
The contract announced on March 30 runs for eight years from the December 2021 timetable ..

The Komarom-Komarno bridge between Hungary and Slovakia has been officially opened by the prime Ministers of Hungary and Slovakia to vehicle traffic today, following three years of work for a total cost of over €117 million with an EU contribution from the CEF Transport Programme of just over €100 million (85% of the total costs).
Today’s inauguration brings another key piece of infrastructure supported by the EU into usage, alleviating congestion, improving safety and providing additional capacity to all users.

The latest bridge across the Danube River was inaugurated yesterday
Featuring an inclined asymmetric cable tower
the two-lane 600m-long Monoštor Bridge connects the towns of Komárom and Komárno
which lie on the Hungarian and Slovak sides of the river
the bridge opens up a new route for heavy-vehicle logistics between the two countries
since the existing Elisabeth Bridge – 3km to the east – is not able to carry vehicles of more than 20t
no long detours will be necessary anymore for lorries to cross the Danube,” said János Karkus
project manager at Via-Pontis and lead of the engineering consortium behind the project
a north bypass has not yet been built in Komárno
so at the same time the new bridge will attract this traffic into the city centre
and despite difficulties encountered during the Covid-19 outbreak
the technical handover process both in Slovakia and Hungary was completed by the end of May
within the contractual construction deadline
there was a complete border closure for two weeks
no construction could be performed at that time,” Karkus told Bd&e
“This resulted in some delay in finishing the works
After the complete border closure was cancelled
since different permissions had to be obtained in order to cross the border on the existing Elisabeth Bridge
the contractor could speed things up again
taking advantage of the long days and good weather.”
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Slovak Prime Minister Igor Matovic were both present at the inauguration on Thursday morning
completing a journey which started with the signing of an intergovernmental agreement to build the bridge in October 2012
Bd&e visited the bridge in December last year. Read more about the project here (Issue #98

With the greeting "Prichádza aj Bernard Thompson!" (Also comes Bernard Thompson) on its website
the club MBK Rieker Com Therm Komarno in the mostly Hungarian city of Komarno on Tuesday announced its signing of the FGCU career scoring leader
who on Friday had his only NBA workout with the New York Knicks and on Monday said he was still looking at other overseas options
in August will join the team that last season went 29-7 to finish second in Slovakia's top league
Komarno also competes in the Eurocup and EuroChallenge
which potentially will give Thompson extra exposure for future professional options
"I feel like it's the right one," Thompson said of the club
"I'm just happy the process is over with and I can start my career now."
Thompson said Komarno made a lesser offer through his agent last week
But he was still considering options in other countries until Komarno improved its offer on Monday
It's good for a first year," Thompson said
Komarno also highlighted the signing of former Seattle University 6-foot rookie guard Isiah Umipig
"It'll be a transition for me," said Thompson
who is working to improve his ball-handling skills to take on more of a "scoring point guard" role
"My niche is putting the ball in the basket
If I can facilitate a team and still be able to score the ball I'll be good."
Thompson will become at least the fourth former FGCU player active professionally
who has played in France since graduating in 2012
Thompson's four-year starting backcourt mate
will be FGCU's next to join the professional ranks as the NBA draft Thursday and NBA summer leagues next month play out
The 6-4 Brown started his career overseas before finishing his rookie season in 2013-14 with the Maine Red Claws
for whom he played throughout the 2014-15 season
The 6-8 Fieler recently completed his rookie season in Spain
helping his once-struggling second division team in Ourense to the league title and promotion to the top league
Bernard Thompson knows his name isn't likely to be called Thursday during the NBA draft
But given the quality of his only workout with an NBA team
the FGCU career scoring leader feels good about his long-term prospects
"It went pretty good," said the 6-foot-3 guard
one of four prospects who worked out for Knicks staff Friday at the MSG Training Center in Tarrytown
north of New York City in Westchester County
They liked my defensive intensity and said I have a great chance to play in the league someday."
That last item came after the workout from Knicks basketball advisor Clarence Gaines Jr.
a key member of the Chicago Bulls staff while winning six NBA titles in the 1990s
Knicks coach Derek Fisher and team president Phil Jackson also watched the workout
Thompson mostly was pitted against 6-5 Harvard wing Wesley Saunders in two-on-two games with the other prospects
6-11 Kiel Turpin of FSU and 6-10 Cady Lalanne of UMass
who said they also were evaluated on how quickly they absorbed playbook information
How fast you can pick up on details and pay attention to details is one of their main things."
Thompson figures the other players were going to do the same thing
But not knowing how long Knicks personnel were going to be around after the workout
he was first to walk up and introduce himself to Jackson after having already met Fisher
"I was just trying to meet everybody," he said
Thompson said Gaines also told him he needs to add bulk to his frame
which increased from about 160-165 pounds entering college to about 175 now
and has long-term prospects at point guard
"It'll just stake some time," Thompson said
"A lot of point guards are a little bigger
Thompson and FGCU four-year starting backcourt mate Brett Comer, who had his lone NBA workout with the Miami Heat in late May
are doubtful to be selected in the two-round
an Associated Press honorable mention All-American as a senior in 2012-13
had workouts with a half-dozen NBA teams but went undrafted
The 6-4 wing from Orlando started his career overseas before finishing the season with the Maine Red Claws
But Thompson and Comer both are hopeful of receiving invitations to NBA summer leagues in Orlando or Las Vegas next month to enhance their visibility and professional prospects – this season and beyond
"I'm just happy I got one," Thompson said of his Knicks workout
It makes you want to go out and play harder and try to get better every day."
Thompson said Gaines told him he could play immediately in the D-League
But he's leaning toward options his agent has for him in Italy
Wherever I go I'm going to be happy and try and enjoy it."

If a time machine took us back to a Slovak town in say
it would probably look completely different compared to today
Cities and towns changed not only due to the march of modernity and advances in architecture but also due to disasters
A good example of this is Komárno in the south of Slovakia
The town on the bank of the Danube river seems to have suffered more than usual
a figure that made Komárno residents create elaborate anti-fire rules
either the laws or the town inhabitants were inconsistent
A strong earthquake claimed hundreds of lives
and left 279 houses in the form of stone piles and wood debris
The break of the 18th and 19th century brought tremors of a different kind to Komárno
As it's position used be quite strategic near the Danube
It was soldiers who demolished the oldest part of the town to build a fortification stretching from the Danube all the way to the estuary of the Váh river
Military fortifications and massive town walls affected the face of the town in another way
it was possible to enter the town only by three gates
it looks completely different today than how it used to several centuries ago

“Both the heavy trucks that have to cross the river and the ships on the Danube will benefit,” said Adina Valean
after the opening of the facility for traffic
The new structure is not only more stable and almost twice as wide as the Erzsébet bridge
While a maximum height of vessels for the old bridge was set at 8.35 m

The birds can die from eating the toxic poppy plant
Updated on June 25, 2023: Intoxicated swans from the poppy field near Komárno, southern Slovakia, were caught by conservationists on June 6 and taken away, the public broadcaster RTVS reported
Poppy fields near Komárno has become temporary home to a colony – or 'bevy' – of swans
They apparently discovered a taste for the plant
The bevy of swans that is now grounded in fields between the villages of Iža and Patince, near the Danube in southern Slovakia, may have become addicted to eating poppy sprouts, writes Slovak daily Denník N
They now seem unable to move out of the fields
Poppy sprouts are toxic for the swans: tens of birds have already died and scientists fear that the almost 150 more who remain

Europe Place is the embodiment of Komárno‘s pro-European attitude
While Slovakia as a country may seem uncertain about its future orientation - west to the European Union or a return eastwards
- Komárno knows exactly what it wants
And contrary to what nationalist politicians believe
The city’s Euro-attitude is embodied by its newest attraction: Europe Place
The recently constructed square in the city centre consists of buildings designed in architectural styles distinct to different European countries and beyond
The Hungarian building is found next to the Slovak
The square was opened in December 2000 and covers 6,500 square metres of land
The centrepiece is the Millennium Fountain
a dizzying swirl of colour and fine detail
this project of unity is found in an area that has long been divisive for Slovaks
Populists love to paint the predominantly ethnic-Hungarian residents as anti-Slovak
saying that they have the interests of Hungary dearer to their hearts than those of Slovakia
Who can ever forget an allegedly drunk Ján Slota
the former head of the Slovak National Party
making his impassioned call in 1998 for Slovaks to man their tanks and storm Budapest
Controversy also arose in 2001 when the ethnic-Hungarian party
demanded the formation of a ‘Komárno County’ during public administration reform
The district’s voters would have been predominantly Hungarian
Party leaders said it would allow locals a louder voice in regional governments; nearly every other Slovak politician was opposed
saying the creation of such a county would be tantamount to dividing the country along racial lines
The most recent row originated in Budapest
Hungarian legislators passed a Status Law that would give ethnic Hungarians living in neighbouring countries special privileges
including subsidies for education at Hungarian schools in Slovakia
Bratislava charged the Hungarians with imposing a foreign law on a sovereign state
a law that would no less discriminate against ethnic Slovaks
Budapest responded by hinting that they would block Slovakia’s Nato entry
one almost expects to find a city on the edge
where ethnic Slovaks and Hungarians are constantly at each other’s throats (the racial division is approximately 65% Hungarian
Komárno is peaceful and friendly - and surprisingly indifferent to disparaging comments made up north about southern Slovakia
“People like Slota have blinders on,” said Cszaba (pronounced Cha-ba)
“What they don’t seem to realise is that it is all about money
Hungarians in Slovakia would not be a problem
They say we’re trying to undermine the state
that we want to be a part of a Greater Hungary
Unemployment has been particularly devastating in Komárno
Because it sits at the confluence of the Danube and the Váh
the economy has been based around shipbuilder Slovenské Lodenice Komárno (Slovak Shipyards Komárno)
But mismanagement in the late 1990s forced the firm to cut its workforce
from 5,500 before the revolution to about 800 today
The effects are felt all around town: Unemployment is at about 25%
and in the Euro Alley shopping complex only a quarter of the retail space has been opened as traders wonder who they would sell to
The problems here are no different from in the rest of the country
who is tired of speaking about these issues
“How many times do we have to say we don’t want to go back to Hungary
These nationalists up north are pointing their fingers at Hungarians and thumping their chests for Slovaks
but what we should all be doing is working together for the EU
I prefer politicians like [Foreign Minister] Eduard Kukan
whoever - work together to improve our lives and our country
But I don’t like politicians with tunnel-vision.”
Komárno may surprise first-time visitors
the people are not pining for a Hungarian reunion
And contrary to popular ethnic-Slovak belief
but people addressed in Slovak switch over with neither hesitation nor irritation
visitors are greeted with the bilingual “Jó napot
Dobrý deň.” The Irish Pub on Europe Place even has a waiter who throws in a ‘Good day’
Our Spectacular Slovakia travel guides are available in our online shop
“Everyone has to learn the national language,” an elderly man told me in Slovak
But - without the silly nationalist rhetoric behind it - it is true..
Could it be that Komárno - so often the target of national ire - is more prepared for the European Union than is the rest of Slovakia
Komárno is one of the oldest towns in Slovakia
It has been settled continuously since the early Bronze Age
The Romans built a military camp here in the 2nd century
but were pushed out by nomadic Avar tribes in the 4th century
Hungarian tribes took over in the 10th century and built the town’s first castle
King Belo IV gave Komárno municipal rights in 1265.The castle became the focus of the Hungarian Kingdom’s anti-Turk defence system
the remains of the Komárno defence system are today the largest bastion fortification in central Europe
It defended the city well: the Turks never conquered the city
although they did manage to burn it to the ground in 1529 and 1594
The fortification system can today be traced on foot in little over an hour
Komárno was granted the status of a free royal borough by Empress Maria Theresa in 1745
Komárno was the fifth largest city in the Hungarian Kingdom with 10,000 inhabitants
and a haulage system whereby boats were pulled upstream by teams of horses on the river bank
Komárno supplied the Royal Court with fish from the 16th century
Natural disasters were frequent: an earthquake damaged the largest structures in 1763; a large chunk of the town and 19 boats were destroyed in a furious storm on September 17
1876 and 1880; and plague outbreaks were also common.Komárno became part of Czechoslovakia in 1920 when the Treaty of Trianon divided the city in half at the Danube
On the Hungarian side of the river is the town Komárom (population 19,600).Some 40,000 people live in Komárno today
The main sites - besides Euro Place and the fortification system - are the baroque Serbian Orthodox Church on Palatinova ulica
named after the general who led the 1848 anti-Habsburg revolt
His statue at the centre of the square is decorated with flowers every March 15 by locals and by visitors from Hungary

the Chinese new energy vehicle company backed by legendary US investor Warren Buffett
delivered the first all-electric bus to Volánbusz
one of Hungary's largest public transport operators
The bus will operate between Komárom, where BYD's Hungarian plant is located
and is the first-ever all-electric bus to operate across the border in both countries
It has a single range of 300 kilometers on a full charge and can carry up to 80 passengers
It is worth mentioning that this bus has also received funding from the EU Interreg program
The Hungarian all-electric bus and truck factory is BYD's first factory in Europe and the first electric vehicle factory invested by a Chinese new energy brand in Europe
more than 90 percent of whom are locally hired
The plant can produce 300 pure electric buses per year in a single shift
were historically part of one administrative unit
belongs among the oldest permanently inhabited localities in Slovakia with highly significant strategic points due to its location at the confluence of Váh and Danube Rivers
That is also why one of the biggest fortification systems of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire was built here
said preservationist Ľudovít Gráfel
Komárno became a border fortification
Ferdinand Emperor ordered the construction of modern fortification
He summoned fortification builders from Italy
with the first new bastion fortification in inland Europe
it was expanded by so-called new fortification that resisted all the conquest attempts of the Turks
The Austrian military machinery brought it to the centre of attention at the beginning of the 19th century when it was rebuilt
“Visitor may basically look at all the objects with the exception of those that are part of some shops,” Gráfel said
“The most interesting and historically most precious is part of the Old and New fortification
but only with a guide because of the safety of visitors.”
The outer circumference of the fortification system is 12.5 kilometres
The old fortification stands on an area of more than 12 hectares
The impregnability of the fortification is symbolised with a so-called Stone Virgin – an allegorical Baroque figure located in the biggest bastion of the new fortification
The statue has an inscription: “Nec Arte
Nec Marte,” which could be translated as “Not with a ploy
Komárno has more than 40 cultural monuments
A cross-border bridge connecting these two countries over the Danube River – through the towns of Komárno and Komárom – will fill the gap and insufficient capacity
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and his Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orbán ceremonially launched on October 17the construction of a cross-border bridge between Slovakia and Hungary over the Danube River
set to link the towns of Komárom on the Hungarian side and Komárno (in Nitra Region
in the southwestern part of the country) in Slovakia
Komárno and Komárom used to form a single town on both banks of the Danube River in the Kingdom of Hungary
Following the First World War and the Treaty of Trianon
the border of the newly created Czechoslovakia cut the town in half
When the new 600-metre bridge across the Danube is completed
meaning that they will no longer have to pass through the centres of the two towns
is expected to be completed by the end of 2019
“It’s rarely seen in politics that when you shake hands
the deal is really valid,” Fico said in reference to the excellent state of Slovak-Hungarian bilateral relations
“We meet politicians who shake hands but claim something else the following day.”
The Slovak PM also thanked the Hungarian side for keeping his promises vis-a-vis Slovakia
Orbán stated that this event is a good example of the fact that the Danube does not have to separate Hungarians and Slovaks
“Let the new bridge be a symbol of the defence of Europe’s external borders and keeping internal borders open
“Let this be the proof that Slovaks and Hungarians
believe in a Europe in which the borders are passable,” added Orbán
The overall costs of the project exceeds €117 million
while the EU funding covers 85 percent of the cost

Matica slovenská wants people to realise “the value of peace” again
After an underground war-time shelter below the House of Matica slovenská in Komárno
one scientific and cultural institution that upholds Slovak cultural heritage was removed from the list of official bunkers
Matica slovenská wanted to use it for education
The institution made a decision to open the Museum of Cold War in the shelter
“The premises will be reconstructed to resemble a shelter from 1970,” said Jozef Černek
head of the House of Matica slovenská in Komárno
the strictest norm for the construction of bunkers was in place

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) has been confirmed in cattle in Slovakia
after neighbouring Hungary reported cases earlier this month
The disease has been detected on three farms in southern Slovakia
in a part of the country home to large populations of pigs and cattle
Around 2,000 animals are expected to be culled
according to a report by local news website Dennik N
The cases are Slovakia's first in 50 years, and they follow confirmation of FMD in a herd of cattle in Hungary earlier in March
which led to a UK import ban on meat and dairy products from both countries
The UK government said farmers and livestock keepers must be "absolutely rigorous" about their biosecurity following the cases
Slovakia's outbreaks are close to the Kisbajcs region of Hungary where the virus was detected
Two of the infected farms are in the Dunaszerdahely district
one with 650 milking cows and the other with 670 animals
The third infected farm is in the Komárno region
but the number of animals on the farm has not yet been confirmed
according to the NFU’s BAB office in Brussels
and ‘disinfectant fords’ will be placed on the roads around the affected farms
It comes just two months after FMD was detected in a small herd of water buffalo near Berlin, Germany
The UK's chief veterinary officer urged livestock keepers to remain vigilant to the clinical signs of FMD
Dr Christine Middlemiss said: “I would urge livestock keepers to exercise the upmost vigilance for signs of disease
follow scrupulous biosecurity and report any suspicion of disease immediately to the Animal and Plant Health Agency
but is a highly contagious viral disease of cattle
pigs and other cloven-hoofed animals such as deer
The disease causes significant economic losses due to production losses in the affected animals as well as loss of access to foreign markets for animals
The 2001 foot-and-mouth outbreak saw around 2,000 cases of the disease in farms across the UK
Farming Minister Daniel Zeichner said the government would "do whatever it takes" to protect farmers from the risk posed by the disease
He said: “That is why restrictions have immediately been brought in on animal products from Hungary and Slovakia to prevent an outbreak
"We will not hesitate to add additional countries to the list if the disease spreads."
but in cattle the main signs are sores and blisters on the feet
Any suspicion of FMD in animals must be reported immediately by calling the Government Helpline
The number to report a suspected case is 03000 200 301 in England and 0300 303 826 in Wales
Farmers and livestock keepers in Scotland should contact their local Field Services Office to report suspicion of disease

It was the latest in a series of public demonstrations against the government
at which people expressed their disagreement at several changes planned by the ruling coalition such as the cancellation of the Special Prosecutor’s Office and changes to the criminal code that would reduce sentences for financial crimes like corruption
The phrase refers to the Slovak expression “podrž taška” (literally
“hold the bag”) which in this context means "bag carrier" – an unimportant or servile minion performing a task for the boss
The target of the jibe was Hlas party leader Peter Pellegrini
whose decision to join the coalition and subsequent actions as to Speaker of Parliament have enabled the government's policies

IT WAS 250 years ago this June that a major earthquake hit the southern-Slovak town of Komárno
The earthquake occurred during a period of political stability in the region
thus allowing for numerous primary sources documenting the earthquake’s impact
and even an oil painting depicting the destruction in Komárno has been preserved
A total of seven churches and 279 houses were destroyed in the earthquake
dating back to the period of the Ottoman invasions in the 16th century
and which was part of the town’s extensive fortification system
suffered extensive damage (worsened by a later earthquake in 1783)
Soldiers stationed there were redeployed elsewhere
the land was transferred to the town and the buildings were sold in an auction
The territory impacted by the earthquake in 1763 was bigger than today’s Slovakia; it damaged buildings in Budapest and was felt as far as Belgrade (Serbia)
Earthquakes in the area continued to be felt into the 20th century
the earthquake in 1783 damaged 780 houses in Komárno
and a serious earthquake was also recorded on January 9
Seismic activity in Slovakia is ascribed to ongoing tectonic movement
Thanks to the documentation of historical seismic activity based on historical sources
we know about a devastating earthquake in central Slovakia in 1443
which registered more than eight out of 12 on the European Macro-seismic Scale (EMS)
Modern seismology in Slovakia dates back to 1902
when a seismic measuring station was established in Hurbanovo

More than half of the inspected trains on the Bratislava-Komárno route have less capacity than they should have according to the latest Transport Ministry’s inspection of private carrier RegioJet
which operates trains with a state subsidy on this route
While the contract between the state and the carrier states that the train set has to have a total capacity of 500 passengers
the inspection found trains with the capacity of only 320
Such a reduction of capacity is a breach of the contract which is also reflected in passengers’ dissatisfaction
said Transport Minister Árpád Érsek
“The Transport Ministry fully reimburses RegioJet’s operation costs and maintenance for a total of 12 trains and passengers have a right to the trains that the state orders from private carriers and pays for,” Érsek told TASR
The ministry explained that the inspected trains did not have two but only one set of carriages
The carrier also used so-called nostalgic carriages which do not meet the agreed contractual quality standards such as design speed of at least 120 kilometres per hour
the capacity to transport prams and bicycles
passenger information systems and air conditioning
the ministry urged RegioJet to publicly apologize to passengers and promptly remedy the situation
Although the ministry understands the current difficult situation of the carrier
lowering the quality of travel is not permitted
said ministry spokeswoman Karolína Ducká
“The carrier can still use other solutions and rent quality carriages from other carriers,” said Ducká
RegioJet responded by saying that over the long term the transport ministry has declined to order a rise in the capacity of the train sets according to its contractual obligation
the ministry does not act in a fair manner and “tries to notably harm RegioJet,” said RegioJet spokesman Aleš Ondrůj
RegioJet presented its proposal to solve the situation and informed the ministry about its readiness to deploy additional sets on crowded trains
Ondrůj pointed out that during the last six months
with a total loss of more that €4 million
While the original contract required 10 sets in operation and two backup sets
the ministry wanted to increase the capacity and RegioJet agreed to a daily operation of all 12 sets without backup
“Though the operation without backup is not stable
we have gone out to meet the ministry‘s desire,” said Ondrůj
adding that in the case of the national railway operator ZSSK the ministry tolerates and pays operating backup of to up to 30-40 percent
additional carriages will make commuting more comfortable
Dunajská Streda (Trnava Region) and Komárno (Nitra Region) via train should become more pleasant
Private railway carrier RegioJet and the Transport Ministry have introduced a new plan for the railway route
which belongs to the busiest in the country
"100 seats will be added to each of the three morning trains in the first phase," said Transport Minister Arpád Érsek (Most-Híd)
adding that the new train sets will arrive from Prague
double-decker trains must be delivered from Germany."
the number of passengers on the Bratislava - Komárno route has almost doubled
the number of passengers increased by 1 million in 2018 compared to the year before
Train sets with a higher capacity will replace the current trains at the busiest hours
RegioJet will add a set of fast-train carriages
increasing the number of seats from 200 to 400
the capacity of other trains during rush hour will be increased
"No more trains can be placed on the track," said Érsek
"This is the only solution we can offer on the single-track railway for now."
The fact that it is a single-track railway makes everything more complicated since all the existing trains must be able to pass this railway without any problem
the density of this railway connection already resembles city railways in Germany and Austria
said RegioJet's spokesperson Aleš Ondrůj
as quoted on the Transport Ministry's website
RegioJet will gradually employ double-decker trains in the next phase
a contract must be signed with Germany's railways
the trains will have to obtain a technical licence for operation in Slovakia
