Restoration is guided by historical photos and records to preserve authenticity
Restoration work has commenced in the historic castle park in Levice
with the initial phase focusing on the removal of non-native or diseased trees
The town of 31,000 acquired the nearly two-hectare site from the Nitra Region in 2017, already envisioning its future renovation. Now, with almost €800,000 in funding, the park will be restored to reflect its 19th-century appearance, writes My Levice.
Visitors will be able to enjoy the newly restored park by September 2026
Historical postcards and old family photographs capture the park’s former charm
The once-picturesque pond has become a dry
The broken walkway is lined with rusted railings
and the entrance gate’s surrounding fence had been dangerously leaning until recently.
Maintenance had been limited to basic grass cutting and tree care
only remnants of modern cypress trees remain
and their removal is part of the ongoing restoration
Other non-native or diseased trees have also begun to be removed
They will be replaced with species that align with the park’s original 19th-century design
“The park was planted in the 19th century,” explained architect Zsolt Papp
who designed the restoration based on historical records
He examined the park’s original purpose
“We did not start from scratch; we also drew from previous studies conducted by university students in Nitra.”

a botanical garden was even created for the local teachers’ institute.
The next major change will take place in the coming months
“The revitalisation will involve several key elements: landscaping
including a stage for cultural and sports events under the Dobó Mansion
and two new entrances to the park,” said the project’s architect
who specialises in the restoration of historic buildings
The most striking transformation will be the pond
“It will be restored to its original shape
as it appeared 100 years ago,” the architect explained
The pond will become a central feature once more
with a 20-metre pedestrian footbridge spanning across it
The pond is designed to be self-sustaining
reinforced areas will be designated for temporary market stalls during events
while walkways will be made of permeable gravel
The fence will be restored using blacksmith steel
following an authentic design inspired by historical photographs.
“The fence has deteriorated over the years
We have designed an authentic solution based on old photographs
which also depict the castle gate,” said the architect

Friends in town of Levice say 71-year-old showed no signs of planning attack
while Slovakian president says climate of hate is collective work
Pjotr Sauer in LeviceThu 16 May 2024 20.07 CESTFirst published on Thu 16 May 2024 20.05 CESTShareMile L’udovit
like other residents of the unassuming grey apartment block on the outskirts of the sleepy central Slovakian town of Levice
considered Juraj Cintula a reliable neighbour and friend
Having lived side by side with him for more than 40 years
L’udovit could never have imagined the 71-year-old former security guard and amateur poet would be suspected of perpetrating the worst political attack in Slovakian modern history – shooting the prime minister multiple times at point-blank range
“I have known him for decades. If he was planning something, there were no signs. But I can’t look into his head,” said L’udovit, 68, on Thursday, a day after the attempted assassination of Robert Fico that left the divisive politician in a critical condition
“Our whole building is trying to understand why he did this.”
But while the alleged perpetrator’s motives remain murky
the attack comes on the back of growing polarisation in Slovak society
L’udovit said he would occasionally discuss politics with Cintula and that his neighbour did not appear to have “strong political opinions”
but had expressed anger over the growing attacks on free speech under Fico’s leadership
“But I would never have thought he would be capable of such awful actions
Slovak police have not yet officially named Cintula as the attacker
but they have said the shooting appeared to have a “clear political motivation”
The Slovak interior minister said a “lone wolf” who had been “radicalised recently
after the [spring] presidential election” had been charged with attempted murder
A video posted online hours after the shooting appeared to show Cintula in detention saying he did not agree with the government’s policies, particularly what he described as the “liquidation” of the media. It was unclear who had taken the footage and how it had surfaced online.
Read moreL’udovit said he had last seen Cintula on Monday when he appeared to be his “usual self”
L’udovit strolled past a police guard stationed outside the apartment block and pointed to the top-floor flat belonging to Cintula and his wife
“I don’t have an explanation for why he did what he did,” he said
Initial available information depicts Cintula as a contradictory figure
a Fico critic who rallied against violence
while also occasionally aligning himself with ultra-nationalist narratives
A year later, however, Cintula was pictured attending a meeting alongside the fringe pro-Russian paramilitary organisation Slovak Conscript. In a Facebook post at the time, Cintula praised the group for “protecting the country’s tradition and culture”.
A member of the Slovak Writers’ Association, Cintula sometimes tapped into anti-migrant narratives in his writing. According to an analysis by the Slovakian outlet Postoj, in at least one of his published works he expressed xenophobic views against the Romany community in Slovakia, a popular topic among the country’s far-right parties.
In February, Cintula was photographed joining a protest in Bratislava against Fico’s proposed changes to criminal law, aimed at reducing penalties for corruption and economic crimes. In the last few months, thousands of Slovaks have been rallying against what they perceive as plans by the populist Fico government to dismantle democratic institutions, in particular the public broadcaster.

"The Left Lives!" - exclaims the president of that party
to the delighted crowd at the celebration in Berlin after the closing of the polling stations in the Bundestag elections
while the initial forecasts of the results are displayed on the screen: 8,5 percent for the Left
after the party was already at around three percent of support in December
"All of you have made this resurrection possible!" - thanks the star of social networks Heidi Rajhinek to the party base
which in the previous weeks and months throughout Germany conducted an intensive door-to-door campaign to attract voters
She does not mention her role as the leading candidate alongside Jan van Aken
How did the Left manage to win young voters
The reach of Heidi Rajhinek on the social networks X and TikTok was much talked about at the end of the election campaign
after the Christian Democratic parties CDU and CSU with their candidate for chancellor Friedrich Merz
together with part of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) and now the Liberal Party (FDP) expelled from the Bundestag
voted for a drastic tightening of the asylum policy
There are many reasons why the Left managed to win over a large number of voters at the last moment - primarily younger ones
the party became number one with 25 percent
two other parties took the lead: the Greens (23 percent) and the FDP (21 percent)
the Greens were more popular among young people
political scientist from the Free University of Berlin
the very large swing of voters in terms of opting for a certain party is an interesting discovery
he says in an interview with Deutsche Welle
"I remember that during other elections in the past years
we often talked about the turn of young people to the right." That trend still exists
but at the same time there is also a left turn
The Greens used to be very popular among young people
especially at the time when hundreds of thousands of them took part in the movement's climate protests Fridays for Future
"A certain type of voter was created which
did not prove to be sustainable," Souris concludes
The Greens warned against voting for the Left
the Left achieved great success with its campaign on social networks
But we must not ignore the fact that the party's campaign on the ground
"The left was not only present on the Internet
but also on the street," recalls the political scientist from Berlin
The fact that it is an opposition party was also in favor of the Left
while the Greens were part of the government." According to the first analyses
a large number of voters switched from the Greens to the Left
The fact that the Greens warned on social media that votes for the Left are wasted votes
thinking that the Left will not enter the Bundestag
It is possible that many voters decided to vote for that party precisely because of this
progressive people who are open to refugees and whose views the Left might have represented better than the Greens
voters were attracted by classic social issues
those that affect people with more modest incomes: high rents
And that is one of the reasons why the Left experienced a rise
Triumph in the Neukölln district of Berlin
"The party also has candidates who are the embodiment of that program," adds Suris and cites the triumph in the Berlin district of Neukölln as an example
It is a settlement with a large number of migrants
where many people live on social assistance
That electoral district is located in the former West Berlin
a city that was divided until the reunification of Germany in 1990
Ferat Kocak from the Left won a direct mandate there - which happened for the first time in history
The Failure of the Alliance Sarah Wagenknecht
which broke away from the Left in January 2024
with almost 20 percent of the votes won in the German capital
the situation was quite different in the elections in the three East German states: the Left suffered a heavy defeat everywhere
no one could have predicted this turn of events," says political analyst Souris
His explanation: BSW did not have the momentum that the Left got from good campaigns
Many voters were not sure exactly what BSW stood for
other than the personality of Sara Wagenknecht
The initial euphoria surrounding that party has probably passed
Suris also recalls the party's rapid entry into the governments of the federal states of Brandenburg and Thuringia
which may not have had the desired effect for the BSW
is surprised and touched by the success of the Left
he doubted that his party would be able to pass the five percent threshold
he launched a campaign called "Mission of gray curls". (Mission Silberlocke)
The goal was to win at least three direct mandates in order to ensure presence in the Bundestag even without five percent at the national level
that Plan B was not even needed - the Left won enough votes
Gizzi knows to whom he owes this success: to the new
mostly young members and the party leadership
The leading candidate in the election was 36-year-old Heidi Rajhinek
who shares the position with 63-year-old Jan van Aken
Gregor Gizzi – the oldest member of the Bundestag
Gizzi recalls the past years filled with internal struggles in the party
because we were only dealing with ourselves," he says
The lowest point was the division within the party and the establishment of the BSW
the 77-year-old politician is looking forward to delivering the opening speech at the constitutive session of the Bundestag as the oldest deputy
these elections could also mean the end of her political career
After the setback as BSW failed to pass the census
she disappointedly stated that she felt that the media and polling agencies were responsible for her result
The party is considering the possibility of a lawsuit before the Constitutional Court
because allegedly many Germans abroad could not vote due to organizational problems
Serbian students repeated a hundred times that this is a marathon
Similar to Adam Mihnjik in the eighties in Poland
The government in Serbia is on the way to the end - you just need to be patient
With the inclusivity created at the plenums
students should continue during election engagement
including the opposition at some point - whatever it may be
Who mentions the extraordinary elections when the rating of the party in power is falling
Vučić is not the most important political factor in the country

The park was designed over 120 years ago by Swedish architect Carl Gustav Swensson
the once-grand park at the heart of Levice has been a shadow of its former self
with more than €1 million secured for its restoration
Designed over 120 years ago by Swedish architect Carl Gustav Swensson
the park was a visionary project made possible by landowner Gustav Schoeller—often dubbed the “Levice Rockefeller.” At the time
it was unlike anything seen before in the region
and though a partial restoration in recent years revived its ponds and fountain
The upcoming revitalisation will focus on restoring its green spaces
the park will also be closed to the public at night
Older residents of Levice recall the park as a place where animals roamed freely
and a pond with a fountain added to the ambience
Locals still refer to it as Schoeller Park
although its official name is Milan Rastislav Štefánik Park
the estate once featured a manor house for the landowner
The Schoeller family operated the mill and played a key role in the development of both Levice and the surrounding agricultural region
The manor was surrounded by a park spanning 1.67 hectares
“The manor’s impressive exterior was complemented by a beautiful park
The ponds and canals were home to water lilies
and other rare wildlife,” wrote the late Csaba Tolnai in his book Levice in Old Postcards
He included early 20th-century postcards showcasing the park and Schoeller Manor
with “climbing plants winding their way up the walls,” which helped spread the park’s fame worldwide
The renowned landscape architect Carl Gustav Swensson paid great attention to detail
The atmosphere was further enhanced by a fountain and an artificial geyser
with decorative wooden bridges arching over the ponds
The Second World War marked the end of the once magnificent manor
Although the building could have been saved
a shortage of building materials led local residents to dismantle it
the decision was made to demolish the remaining structure
with a plaque commemorating the manor’s existence
The park’s large wrought-iron gate remained as an entrance for years before being repurposed as the gateway to an amphitheatre
including towering trees and one of the original aviaries
which has since been converted into a gazebo
the city restored the park’s neglected ponds and geyser
The restoration of the park is set to continue
The revitalisation will cost €1.092 million
with €1.005 million provided through a non-repayable grant from the Investments Ministry
efforts will focus on maintaining and caring for existing trees and shrubs
The park will also benefit from upgraded lighting
retention and infiltration areas will be introduced to manage rainwater across the 1.67-hectare site
The revitalised Schoeller Gate will once again become a prominent feature
restoring the park’s historic charm,” said Mayor Ján Krtík
signalling a return to the park’s storied past

Four groups on Poland’s left have signed an agreement to stand jointly at this autumn’s parliamentary elections, where they and other opposition parties will be seeking to prevent the ruling national-conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party from winning an unprecedented third term
The four entities who have agreed to create a joint list of candidates are: New Left (Nowa Lewica)
which was in 2021 itself formed from a merger of the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) and Spring (Wiosna); Together (Razem); the Polish Socialist Party (PPS); and Labour Union (Unia Pracy)
The groups have already been involved in various forms of cooperation since 2019
Recent polling gives the united left support of around 8%
down from the 12.5% of the vote it won at the last parliamentary elections
Monthly polling average for Poland’s main political groups (source: ewybory.eu)
Recent months have seen continued speculation over what form the opposition will stand in at this year’s elections. The largest opposition party, Civic Platform (PO), and its leader Donald Tusk have been strongly pushing for a joint list of all parties from left to centre-right
However, that has been met with scepticism from other parties
admitted that the most probable outcome was that the opposition would stand as three main blocs
It is likely that the left will be one of those
we will not defeat PiS,” said Wojciech Konieczny
at yesterday’s announcement of the joint list
it will be a Poland where we will not forget about those who are weaker
where a roof over your head will be the right of every human being,” added Adrian Zandberg
The Left, Poland's second largest opposition group, has set out its 10 policy priorities, including the right to abortion, climate neutrality, secular schools, affordable housing and marriage equalityhttps://t.co/SKOAlElGe7
— Notes from Poland 🇵🇱 (@notesfrompoland) February 22, 2021
The four groups who signed the agreement yesterday noted that they still want more organisations to join them
Czarzasty also confirmed to RMF FM that an agreement is soon expected with other opposition parties over an electoral pact for the elections to the Senate
where seats are decided as single-member districts unlike in the lower-house Sejm
At the last parliamentary elections in 2019, opposition groups stood separately for the Sejm but they created an electoral pact not to stand candidates against one another for the Senate, which allowed them to take control of the chamber from PiS
With polls indicating the ruling party could be unseated at next year's elections
some have called for the opposition to stand as a single alliance
The left, however, is resisting calls to unite – at least until after the election, writes @RBroszkowski https://t.co/pGhDkdODnR

The University of Washington transfer was one of six Citadel players to appear in all 32 games during the 2009-10 season
Wolfinger scored double figures in eight games
including a string of six straight games to open the season
Wolfinger notched his only career double-double with a 20 point
Wolfinger was instrumental in The Citadel's 88-62 victory over Maryland-Eastern Shore
to gain a spot on the Hispanic College Fund Challenge All-Tournament team
His five treys helped the Bulldogs to establish a Missouri State JQH Arena record with 13 3-pointers
Wolfinger, along with Bryan Streeter

The police inspectorate still investigating the case
the man who shot and injured Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer) on May 15 in Handlová
was filmed by a member of the Office for the Protection of Public Figures and Diplomatic Missions
The member then forwarded it to his superiors
claims former police chief Štefan Hamran
According to the Denník N daily
He might also have taken a picture of the attacker’s identification card
“I’m not surprised that the video could have been leaked,” Hamran said
believed to have been sacked from the top job by Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok (Hlas) last October in order to end corruption investigations leading to previous Smer governments
is running in the European elections on the Demokrati party’s slate
The Interior Ministry’s Police Inspectorate is investigating how the video made it to social media
has confessed to making the video but refuted posting it online
The video first appeared online on the anti-Ukrainian Slovenský Medveď (Slovak Bear) page on Facebook
The video is illegal evidence since it was made outside the official investigation
“The police should have taken all steps to ensure that such a video did not leak
instead of steps to publish such a video - apparently edited on purpose,” said Hamran
noting that some politicians have been using the video to present the motive of the attacker as a fait accompli
“That’s what an investigation is for.”
Eštok initially claimed that Juraj C
Defence Minister Robert Kaliňák (Smer) and the interior minister said that someone might have helped the attacker
because his communication on social media had been deleted by the time the police searched his house
Both said right after the attack that it was a politically motivated act
The Office for the Protection of Public Figures and Diplomatic Missions is helmed by Pavol Krejčí of the Hlas party
The body has faced criticism for failing to protect the prime minister in Handlová
Šutaj Eštok has defended Krejčí
“He [Krejčí] was with the prime minister
His whole suit was covered in blood,” the minister said
Slovensko party leader and former premier Igor Matovič called on the minister to resign after the attack
As much as 57.1 percent of respondents think that he should stay
The SCIO agency also asked people why they think Slovak society is polarised
“Coalition voters blame the opposition and vice versa,” said the agency’s co-founder and former politician Martin Klus
disinformation media (36.6 percent) and social media (26.5 percent)
the division of society into opposition and coalition fans is obvious.” The poll was conducted between May 17 and 20
Another problem in the case of the suspected assassination attempt is why the police searched the flat of Juraj C
Šutaj Eštok and police chief Ľubomír Solák told the media to pose this question to Judge Roman Púchovský of the Specialised Criminal Court in Pezinok
Even if it is true that Juraj C.’s communication on social media had been deleted two hours after the attack, as claimed by some of the ministers, the police would not have probably obtained a search warrant. But as the Sme daily notes
other things might have been removed from the flat in two days

“He works hard on both ends of the board
and at the same time I believe that he can quickly adapt and adapt to European basketball.”
According to a release
Adaway and Levickí Patrioti reached a deal in early July
Levickí Patrioti has won four Slovak League titles
The team also grabbed the Slovak Cup in 2019
I am extremely grateful for the wonderful opportunity I have been given,” Adaway said in a release
“One of the main things about me is that I love to win
Success is a feeling I’m addicted to
My main goal is to help the team to another title; that’s the main thing for me
I will work on myself every day to get better
but at the top of my list is winning for the team
I can’t wait to come to Levice and start working.”
Adaway is coming off a 2022-23 campaign for the Austin Spurs

(AP) — Former President Donald Trump promised to use a second term in the White House to defend Christian values and even suggested he’d shield the faith’s central iconography
warning a convention of religious broadcasters on Thursday night that the left wants “to tear down crosses.”
every communist regime throughout history has tried to stamp out the churches
just like every fascist regime has tried to co-opt them and control them,” Trump told hundreds of cheering attendees at the National Religious Broadcasters International Christian Media Convention in Nashville
the radical left is trying to do both.”

Trump is favored in a Republican primary where the once crowded field has dwindled to just him and his former ambassador to the United Nations
where sponsors distributed free red and white baseball caps emblazoned with “Make America Pray Again,” was exceedingly friendly territory for the former president
whose address often felt more like a rally than a staid convention speech

ironically calling attention to Trump’s lack of reaction on the “Alabama IVF ruling he is responsible for.”
Trump used his speech to boast that he had used his first term to do “more to uphold religious freedom than any administration in history.”
“The enthusiasm for this election coming up in November is far greater than it was in 2016 or 2020,” he said
Tennessee holds its primary on Super Tuesday
when many states around the country vote and could move Trump to the cusp of claiming the Republican nomination
Some religious leaders were initially hesitant to get behind multi-divorcee Trump when he first ran for president in 2016
but now they are among his mostly solidly loyal “Make America Great Again” base
That’s despite a personal history that has only gotten more checkered in recent years
including Trump being indicted in New York in connection with hush money payments made to a porn actress in an attempt to suppress an extramarital affair
people were skeptical,” said Troy Miller
president and CEO of the National Religious Broadcasters
as they’ve learned more and listened to Donald Trump speak
the one thing I hear all the time from people … is that they really feel like Donald Trump understands them and that’s the biggest connection that people make is
‘This is a guy in politics who gets us
who doesn’t talk like he’s an elitist and talk down to us.'”

The origins of today’s crisis in Labour date back to the 19th century
and ever since Jews have been seen as a problem by a strain of socialist thought
So, we’re back to the “Jewish Question”? The current antisemitism crisis on the left has not come out of nowhere
it has its roots in a tradition on the left itself
has always had difficulty in responding swiftly to antisemitism and
we won’t get very far in resolving today’s crisis
to think about why some on the left have always seen Jews as a problem and why they have helped the idea of a “Jewish Question” to re-emerge with such potency
At root is the thought that if antisemitism exists
it must have something to do with how Jews supposedly behave
That supposed behaviour may be described in different ways – sometimes it has an economic character
But what is common is the idea that Jews are to blame for antisemitism and that to protest against them is understandable
This first became a serious problem on the left in the late 19th century
as antisemitism first became a political force in the modern world
Some on the left flirted with the response that there might be something progressive about antisemitism: that it was a kind of anti-capitalism
which could be harnessed to the socialist cause
They also thought that philosemitism was more of a problem
because it supposedly encouraged Jews to make too much of (or even fabricate) antisemitism and to resist assimilation
One criticism of this approach at the time was to call it the “socialism of fools”
a problematic formulation because it suggested that antisemitism was still some kind of socialism
The Communist party soon switched to loyally supporting the Hitler-Stalin pact
which effectively delivered large numbers of Jews up to the Nazis
View image in fullscreen‘The repeated invocations of Cable Street [the 1936 anti-facist demonstration in London] can give a misleading picture.’ Photograph: David Savill/Getty ImagesWhen the Soviet Union was finally forced to fight the Nazis
the suffering of Jews was deliberately and repeatedly downplayed
The Soviet Union not only suppressed knowledge of what had been done to Jews but launched its own vicious antisemitic project
one that would have culminated in another genocide had Stalin not died
For both Stalinists and that part of the New Left
Zionism is a racist ideology that pits the interests of Jews against the interests of everyone else
the state of Israel is an integral part of the western imperialist power structure that exploits and oppresses the rest of the world and the Palestinians in particular
whose land Jews have plundered and colonised and whom they keep in a state of permanent subjugation
The Soviet Union formulated its approach within the context of the cold war
when it often appeared to support anti-colonial
Those on the left who (rightly if often too uncritically) supported those struggles
where the Americans were so clearly the enemy
into embracing this anti-Zionism into their world view
even though the Israel-Palestine conflict had such clearly different roots
they found it unbearable to acknowledge what was glaringly obvious – that the establishment of the state of Israel was profoundly connected to the Holocaust
To integrate anti-Zionism into an anti-imperialist
anti-American world view therefore also meant either denying or (better) reinterpreting the Holocaust
Holocaust denial is not an accidental feature of today’s antisemitism
but it is more common to downplay what happened to Jews as Jews
So the Holocaust has to be thought about only in universal terms
as only one genocide among many and one that supposedly excludes the others
it is the other way around: thinking about the Holocaust helps people think about other genocides.) Indeed
Not content with accusing Israel of being like apartheid South Africa
it is supposedly guilty of genocide itself… against the Palestinians
If such purported behaviour makes people antisemitic
it is understandable and part of a fundamentally progressive view of the world
only with this difference: what was previously attributed to Jews inside nation states is now attributed to the Jewish state on the international stage
There has always been, though, another tradition on the left, which has never accepted the very idea of a “Jewish Question”. What it understands is that there is a question of antisemitism; that Jews are not responsible for antisemitism but antisemites are; that Jews are not a problem but antisemites are. Antisemitism is not something that should be excused or condoned
It has to be fought wherever it shows its face
even – and sadly now more than ever – when that face is on the left

Oberlin College has been ordered by a jury to pay $44 million to a local bakery and convenience store after the midwestern liberal arts school was found responsible for defamation
infliction of emotional distress and intentional interference of business relationships
The verdict comes nearly three years after a skirmish broke out between Jonathan Aladin
a black student at the liberal arts college
the son and grandson of the owners of Gibson's Bakery and Food Market
a family-owned establishment near the college's campus in Oberlin
The altercation set off a bitter standoff between the liberal arts college and the local bakery
which has been a fixture in the college community for more than 100 years
Jurors in Lorain County on Thursday awarded Gibson's Bakery $33.2 million in punitive damages
the same jury awarded the bakery $11 million in compensatory damages
In an emailed statement sent to Oberlin College students and alumni Friday morning
President Carmen Twillie Ambar wrote that the legal process was far from over
"Let me be absolutely clear: This is not the final outcome
just one step along the way of what may turn out to be a lengthy and complex legal process," she said
then took out his phone to take a picture of Aladin
who slapped the phone from his hand and caused the device to strike Gibson Jr.'s face
Police said Aladin then ran from the store
dropping the two bottles of wine to the floor
then "chased the student out of the store across West College Street and into Tappan Square
where he placed the student in a chokehold." Two of Aladin's friends
Oberlin police officers arrived at the scene and arrested the three students — Aladin with robbery and his friends with assault — but did not arrest Gibson Jr
just a day after Donald Trump clinched the presidency
prompted a series of heated demonstrations in front of the local business
with some students waving fliers that encouraged a boycott of the establishment
"A member of our community was assaulted by the owner of this establishment yesterday," read a flier issued outside the bakery
calling Gibson's a "RACIST establishment with a LONG ACCOUNT of RACIAL PROFILING and DISCRIMINATION," according to the complaint
The flier also identified ten of the bakery's competitors where the demonstrators urged Gibson Bakery's customers to shop instead
Vice President and Dean of Students Meredith Raimondo "distributed the flyer to Oberlin College students
the public and even the media," the complaint states
"Raimondo and other Oberlin College professors
the assistant to the President of Oberlin College
raised their firsts in support of the demonstration
while shouting the defamatory statements on a bullhorn
thereby assuring that a large audience would hear their defamatory statements," the bakery alleged
In response to the accusations of racial profiling at the bakery
police conducted an investigation and found that 40 adults had been arrested for shoplifting at the bakery in the past five years
In an email to students on the Friday after the arrest
and Raimondo acknowledged that fiery reactions to the case may be linked to "fears and concerns that many are feeling in response to the outcome of the presidential election." They vowed to use "every resource to determine the full and true narrative" and said they were "deeply troubled because we have heard from students that there is more to the story than what has been generally reported."
In the days following the students' arrest
Oberlin College announced it had severed its business relationship with Gibson's Bakery
The bakery had supplied baked goods for the school's dining services through a third-party company
Gibson's Bakery claimed Raimondo "approached the Oberlin College of Dining Services Michelle Gross and demanded that she instruct Bon Appetit to cease from engaging in any business with Gibson's Bakery." The move
"resulted in extreme emotional distress of Michelle Gross causing her to take a leave of absence and then early retirement."
approximately a week after the college cut its contract with Gibson's
the school demanded the bakery dismiss all criminal charges against the three students involved in the initial incident as "quid pro quo for resuming business with Gibson's Bakery." It also said that the college "insisted that Gibson's Bakery call Raimondo when students are caught stealing rather than informing the police."
the owner of Gibson's Bakery and the grandfather of Allyn Gibson Jr.
did not agree to such a request and Oberlin "continued to attempt to steamroll and intimidate Gibson's Bakery and refused to retract its defamatory statements or reinstate its business with Gibson's Bakery," according to the complaint
the college "allowed Bon Appetit to reinstate its business with Gibson's Bakery" but "refused to retract the defamatory statements that had been made," according to the complaint
which noted that the shop had already suffered dire consequences
Aladin and the two students pleaded guilty to attempted theft and aggravated trespass
each student read a statement acknowledging that Gibson's was justified in trying to restrain Aladin and that the actions of the shop's employees had not been racially motivated
"This unfortunate incident was triggered by an attempt to purchase alcohol," Aladin wrote
"I believe the employees of Gibson's actions were not racially motivated
They were merely trying to prevent an underage sale."
the plea agreement reached by the trio with prosecutors did not settle the case
The bakery alleged that even after the students reached a plea bargain
Oberlin College continued to "prominently display the defamatory statements that Gibson's assaulted a black student and has a history of racial profiling and discriminatory conduct," according to the complaint
Gibson's claimed the college's conduct has resulted in a "permanent economic sanction" against Gibson's Bakery and the Gibson Family
Gibson's filed a civil lawsuit against Oberlin in the Lorain County Court of Common Pleas in November 2017
The bakery accused the college of supporting and promoting the students' claims of racism and sued the liberal arts school
The bakery's owners argued that Oberlin College "facilitated
and promoted the illegal defamation and economic boycott" of Gibson's Bakery by helping students copy and distribute fliers
suspending classes and supplying protesters with free food and drink
College leaders also "encouraged students to demonstrate outside Gibson's Bakery in lieu of attending scheduled classes and provided credit to the students who attended and participated in the demonstration(s)," according to the complaint
Gibson's argued a Facebook post by an Oberlin's Department of Africana Studies stated: "Gibson's has been bad for decades
Their food is rotten and they profile Black students
The lawsuit claimed college tour guides continue to advise prospective and future students not to shop at Gibson's Bakery because it is a "racist establishment" that "assaults students," the complaint stated
and refusal to do business with Gibson's Bakery was having a devastating effect on Gibson's Bakery and the Gibson family." The college's behavior also took a "severe emotional and physical toll" on the family
financial welfare and their personal standing within the community
The Gibson's home was damaged "on one or more occasions" and car tires had been punctured
late one night and loudly banged on his door and windows while he slept," the complaint stated
was "startled and fell as he was attempting to determine who was banging on his door and windows
That fall caused him to suffer life threatening injuries
including a broken neck and multiple fractured vertebrae
Allyn Gibson required an extended hospital stay and will require the use of a neck brace for the rest of his life."
Oberlin responded to the lawsuit by arguing that none of the statements cited by the bakery's owners had been defamatory
and said the school was not responsible for the views expressed by its students
The college said Raimondo attended the demonstrations to "ensure that students' freedom of speech was protected and that the student demonstrations were safe and lawful."
"Colleges cannot he held liable for the independent actions of their students," Oberlin Vice President Donica Thomas Varner said in an email to the campus community
"Institutions of higher education are obligated to protect freedom of speech on their campuses and respect their students' decision to peacefully exercise their First Amendment rights
Oberlin College acted in accordance with these obligations."
Jurors in Lorain County heard the case this spring. Communication unsealed in court filings and at the trial underscored how the case sparked very different reactions from members of the college community
Some were apparently "disgusted" and "embarrassed" by the protests
which they felt reflected poorly on the campus
while others said the boycott had successfully targeted Gibson's with a "smear on their brand."
"So here's one rhing [sic] on my mind about gibsons
They own so much prime property in oberlin that boycotting doesn't hurt them that much
and that's been taken care of," associate professor of music theory Jan Miyake said in an unsealed court filing
Raimondo took the stand at the trial and denied accounts that she had encouraged people to boycott the bakery
She said she did not have "control and influence" over the students
Court documents revealed that she and another administrator expressed outrage after a professor spoke out against the boycott
"F--k him," Raimondo wrote in a text message, the Chronicle-Telegram reported
"I'd say unleash the students if I wasn't convinced this needs to be put behind us."
The judge denied the school's request on Tuesday to declare a mistrial in the case
with some students urging their colleagues to boycott Gibson's Bakery and protest the establishment
while others advised against taking action against the bakery
a student at the liberal arts college who was present at many demonstrations in front of Gibson's Bakery
told Salon that the lawsuit "impacted how the student body understands our relationship with the town of Oberlin."
"It cemented the idea that freedom of speech is never free," he added
"I could see [the verdict] discouraging college administrations from doing their full duty to protect and ensure the safety of their student body."
the former editor in chief of Oberlin's student newspaper
who has written extensively about the lawsuit during her time on campus
told Salon that she believes the campus "will be dealing with the ramifications of the lawsuit for a while."
"I don't expect this is the end of the conflict with Gibson's and I imagine if Gibson's continues to operate in Oberlin
Allen said she feels "very alienated from the community and people who supported Gibson's in this case," and noted she "received a lot of vile
hateful and threatening messages" for her coverage of the case
"This divide and alienation is not just siloed in Oberlin
but is representative of a larger national divide that has worsened in recent years
as many Americans become more and more nationalist and rally against progressive thinking and higher education," she added
"This case represented an opportunity to 'stick it to' a leftist institution and I think some people rallied behind that."
Some free speech advocates and lawyers have said the verdict of the case raises concerns about freedom of speech on college campuses
First Amendment lawyer at Davis Wright Tremaine
"Holding universities financially liable for student speech will inevitably lead them to police and censor that speech
creating a chilling effect that is antithetical to the First Amendment," Schary told Salon

As a result the group lacks a crystal-clear manifesto full of policies, but between the statement of intent published at its conference in 2013 and a speech given by leader Alexis Tsipras in September
Much of Syriza's economic platform relates back to the Memorandum of Understanding between Greece and its international lenders, known as the Troika (the International Monetary Fund
The agreement has meant some severe economic changes for Greece
like heavy reductions to public-sector pay
and Syriza wants the whole thing torn up.
Tsipras gave a speech in Thessaloniki three months ago that provides the building blocks of Syriza's program:
The bottom line of all of this is that it's extremely expensive. The disagreements between Syriza and the finance ministry as to what this will all cost are pretty cosmetic
Government spending might well be a very positive thing for Greece
but borrowing in a currency that the country is not in charge of complicates that
So the Syriza program also implies almost no co-operation at all with European institutions. The coalition is demanding things from the ECB and European Union that it simply won't do (like fund its programs)
there may be an entire EU member state just refusing to go along with European policy
which is a massive challenge for the whole continent

British Columbia — Prostitution is the quintessential expression of global capitalism
to service the cruel and lascivious demands of the corporate elite
we will take one more collective step toward the global plantation being built by the powerful
The fight against prostitution is the fight against a dehumanizing neoliberalism that begins
with the subjugation of impoverished girls and women
Those who sell their bodies for sex do so out of desperation
with a variety of diseases and medical conditions
and suffering from severe emotional trauma
The left is made morally bankrupt by its failure to grasp that legal prostitution is another face of neoliberalism
On a rainy night recently I walked past the desperate street prostitutes in the 15 square blocks that make up the Downtown Eastside ghetto in Vancouver — most of them impoverished aboriginal women
I saw on the desolate street corners where women wait for customers the cruelty and despair that will characterize most of our lives if the architects of neoliberalism remain in power
Downtown Eastside has the highest HIV infection rate in North America
Lakeman and the shelter refused to give the provincial government access to victims’ files in order to protect the anonymity of the women
They also denied this information to the courts
“defense attorneys try to discredit or bully women complainants in criminal cases of male violence against women.” This defiance saw the shelter lose government funding
“It is still impossible to work effectively in a rape crisis center or a transition house and not be breaking the Canadian law on a regular basis,” said Lakeman
who describes herself as being increasingly radical
along with the radical feminists allied with the shelter
is the bête noire not only of the state but of feckless liberals who think physical abuse of a woman is abhorrent if it occurs in a sweatshop but somehow is acceptable in a rented room
Lakeman is fighting a world that has gone numb
a world where solidarity with the oppressed is a foreign concept
with upheavals ahead caused by climate change and the breakdown of global capitalism
she fears that if mechanisms are not in place to protect poor women the exploitation and abuse will increase
“We have never stopped having to deal with misogyny among activists,” she said
But we want new formations to take women’s leadership seriously
to use what has been learned in the last 40 or 50 years
We deal with the most dispossessed among women
And it is clear to us that every sloppy uprising
We need to have thoughtfulness built into our practices of revolt
We do not want the traditional right-wing version of law and order
We do not call for a reduction in men’s rights
every woman is on her own against a man with more power.”
“We are seeing a range of violence against women that generations before us never saw — incest
trafficking and violence against lesbians,” she went on
We are trying to hang on to what we know about how to care for people
Yet we have to insist on a woman’s right not to face every man alone
We have to demand the rule of law.” “Globalization and neoliberalism have accelerated a process in which women are being sold wholesale
as if it is OK to prostitute Asian women in brothels because they are sending money home to poor families,” she said
“This is the neoliberal model proposed to us
It is [considered] OK … just a job like any other job
This model says people are allowed to own factories where prostitution is done
They can own distribution systems [for prostitution]
They can use public relations to promote it
Men who pay for prostitution support this machinery
The state that permits prostitution supports this machinery
racism and protect women is to stop men from buying prostitutes
And once that happens we can mobilize against the industry and the state to benefit the whole anti-racist and anti-capitalist struggle
But men will have to accept feminist leadership
And they will have to give up the self-indulgence of prostitution.”
“The left broke apart in the 1970s over the failure to contend with racism
imperialism and women’s freedom,” she said
We have to build alliances across these gaps
You can’t expect us to coalesce on the ‘wider’ issues unless you accept this
The problem with the left is it is afraid of words like ‘morality.’ The left does not know how to distinguish between right and wrong
It does not understand what constitutes unethical behavior.”
Even though many radical feminists are deeply hostile to the neoliberal policies of the state
they nevertheless are calling for laws to protect women and demanding that the police intervene to halt the exploitation of women
The shelter in Vancouver filed an amicus curiae in a case before the Canadian Supreme Court arguing for the decriminalization of those who are prostituted
Lakeman and the other women have endured fierce criticism
“In the progressive left it is popular to be anti-state,” she said
“It is not popular to say we have to press the state to carry out particular policies
It comes from our answering the crisis line every day
thin rhetoric from the left about compassion for the prostituted
without ever doing anything concrete for the prostituted.”
turns Lakeman and the collective’s other women into outsiders among those who should be their allies
The legalization of prostitution in Germany and the Netherlands has expanded trafficking and led to an explosion in child prostitution in those two countries
Eastern Europe and Africa have been shipped to legal brothels there
are imported to serve the desires and fetishes of those in the industrialized world
Lakeman called what has happened in countries such as Germany and the Netherlands “the industrialization of prostitution.” Sweden in 1999 criminalized the purchasing of sex
The two responses — the German model and the so-called Nordic model — have had dramatically different effects
The German and Dutch approach normalizes and expands human trafficking and prostitution
Sweden has cut street prostitution by half and freed many women from sexual slavery
Those whose bodies are being sold should not be punished
and the Liberal Party have said they will work for the legalization of prostitution
There is no guarantee that the law will hold as economic and sexual inequality widens across the globe
has been steadily worsened by the neoliberal policies of First World countries,” said Alice Lee
part of the Asian Women Coalition Ending Prostitution
“These policies are grounded in social disparities of race
They create conditions that force poor women to migrate
Those who support legalizing prostitution often argue that trafficking is bad
But trafficking and prostitution are inseparable.”
“Asian women are trafficked primarily to earn money in prostitution to support their families,” she said
“And we are developing generations of women who are prostituted and are abandoned to exploitation
When we were in Cambodia we went to a neighborhood where women aged out as prostitutes in the 20s and where 90 percent of the women became prostitutes
Communism in China stamped out prostitution
“Women in China work for a dollar a day in factories,” Lee said
“Traffickers trick these women into prostitution by offering an escape from their despair with a promise of better jobs and improved working conditions
In mining towns and centers of resource extraction women are recruited and brought in as prostitutes to service the men
They are brought into military bases and to tourist sites
women are being prostituted and exploited.”
prostitution is an extension of imperialism,” Lee said
Prostitution is built on the social power disparities of race and color
Women of color are disproportionately exploited through prostitution
This racism is not acknowledged by those in First World countries

The Slovenska brana (Slovak Gate) Military History Club has been presenting the rich military history of the village of Rybnik in the district of Levice and the adjacent microregion to the public since 2020
April 10 (TASR) - The Slovenska brana (Slovak Gate) Military History Club (KVH) has been presenting the rich military history of the village of Rybnik in the district of Levice (Nitra region) and the adjacent microregion to the public since 2020. The club
which is the successor to the no longer-existing KVH Levice
covers the activities of some 15 people engaged in the field of education
as well as scientific and research activities. The club is actively involved in restoring monuments
It also develops scientific and research activities
thanks to which these restorations can be carried out
It is also planning to create an educational trail that will illustrate the military events of the region in 1919
Peter Kovac. Club members
also participate in various commemorative activities held on the occasion of the anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising and the end of WWII
They are currently preparing to open a historical exhibition in a former manor house in the village of Rybnik
which they would like to make available to the public to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of WWII. According to Kovac
they are trying to open it in the attic of the building mainly due to the absence of such publicly accessible exhibitions
"This location was a significant battlefield
when there was really heavy fighting here in February 1945," he said
Most of the artifacts that they want to show to the public come from this period. Most of the exhibits being prepared come from the private collections of club members or from various municipal museums and memorial rooms
The exhibition will be available to the public based on request and free of charge
"The priority goal is to use these premises for primary and secondary schools and for educational activities," noted Kovac
Corbyn’s right hand man for four and a half years
was full of praise when asked about the official opposition’s handling of the Covid crisis
‘Keir’s got this exactly right’ the ex-shadow chancellor told John Pienaar
But many of Corbyn’s loyal supporters didn’t agree; sparking an internal Labour argument between the party’s warring sides
It is tempting to point to the scrap and claim that it is yet more evidence of the difficulties Starmer faces to get Labour winning again
as the party’s internal battles never seem to end and in fact
are now being fought out between ever smaller factions
more positive way for Starmer to interpret this row (and other interfactional arguments in Labour) is to show all too clearly that he no longer needs to fear his party’s far-left
Starmer could soon come unstuck and much depends on what happens over the next three and a half years

COMPETITIONS comparing the strength are popular – and sometimes even bring records
the competition in Levice brought about a new record: strongman František Piros of Galanta beat his own Slovak record in lifting a burden above his head in a standing position
he lifted 175 kilograms – 9 kg more than the record of 166 kg from 2001. Piros made the attempt under supervision of a commissioner and received a certificate from the Book of Slovak Records
Igor Svítok – author of the book – informed the TASR newswire
non-traditional power related disciplines of mixed couples (a man and a woman) taking place
He added that these disciplines included pulling a towing vehicle weighing 7.5 tonnes; joint overturning of a tire weighing 400 kilograms; joint carrying of suitcases of 115 kilograms for men and 50 kilograms for women; Lifting a concrete ball
as true champions participated in this competition
