Former Devils defenseman Cal Foote signs in Slovakia’s top professional league for one-year.
announced on Wednesday that former New Jersey Devils defenseman
Foote is one of five NHLers, including former Devils forward, Michael McLeod
who are facing sexual assault charges related to the 2018 Hockey Canada investigation
Trial won’t likely begin until April 2025. All five parties submitted applications to skip pretrial hearings stemming from the 2018 Hockey Canada sexual assault case
he presented his case in his application to resume playing hockey until trial begins
“I am required to follow a daily and stringent training regimen,” said Foote via The Globe and Mail
“If I am unable to train at this level consistently
my ability to continue playing professional hockey will be jeopardized.”
Foote’s new contract in Slovakia makes him the third of five members to ink a deal that allows him to continue his playing career. McLeod signed in the KHL with Barys Astana and former Calgary Flames forward, Dillon Dubé signed with Dinamo Minsk
The Devils signed Foote to a one-yer contract in the summer of 2023
He and McLeod took leaves of absences from the Devils in January and since have not had their contracts in the NHL renewed
Foote skated in just four NHL games last season
“Nearly 30 court days have been scheduled for pretrial hearings that will last until January
none of which the players will be required to attend
“While the onus is on an accused in Canada to attend criminal court hearings
Each of the players swore an affidavit this summer.”

as someone who lives in London and has some additional details from local news… Being granted those pretrial exceptions is incredibly uncommon
Some of the players had the legitimate excuse of being like
I’m looking for work in Europe and I can’t catch a flight in time
That all of them were granted the exception is a huge point of controversy here
Most people facing criminal charges in Ontario do not get this exception
it’s not uncommon for people to be called in from hours away or from overseas
Slippery slope to “flight risk” but I think the judge is just allowing them to make money overseas since nobody will give them a job in the NHL
How does the NHLPA provide financial support in these instances

Northern town of Liptovský Mikuláš declares state of emergency while hunt for animal takes place
Five people have been injured in the second bear attack in Slovakia in three days
prompting a northern town to declare a state of emergency and authorities to propose reclassifying the animals’ status on the protected species list
A 49-year-old woman was treated in hospital for an injury to her shoulder, and a 72-year-old man for a cut to his head, after the incident on Sunday in Liptovský Mikuláš, near the Tatra mountains, local authorities said.
A 10-year-old girl and two further adults suffered scratches and bruises, authorities said, while a couple pushing their child in a buggy were “lucky to escape unharmed”. People were asked not to leave residential areas. Authorities on Monday said the bear was still at large and six armed patrols were hunting it.
Read more“The bear has been pushed into uninhabited zones by rescue and security forces where emergency teams … have orders to eliminate it,” the town hall said
calling on residents to exercise maximum caution especially in the early morning and evening
police patrols have been strengthened and brown bear emergency teams from all over the country have been ordered to our city and surroundings
A thermal imagine drone is also being deployed
We cannot allow a bear to attack five people in the centre in broad daylight.”
Mobile phone footage posted on social media showed the bear charging along a road and over a zebra crossing as terrified pedestrians scattered
then bounding across a green space and lunging at a man hurriedly climbing a fence to escape it
The incident came a day after a 31-year-old Belarussian woman, identified by local media as Tatiana
died while trying to evade a brown bear in the Low Tatra mountain range near the same town
The woman had been walking in a thickly forested area on the western side of the Demänovská valley in the Low Tatras with a 29-year-old male companion
the Slovakian mountain rescue service said
The pair split and ran in opposite directions
Rescue teams with dogs and drones mounted a search after being alerted by the man
who was located “scared but unhurt” at the top of a steep ravine
Slovakian authorities said on Monday their initial investigation had shown the woman died as a result of her fall
rather than – as earlier media reports had suggested – after being mauled by the bear
Improved environmental protection in central and eastern Europe since the late 1980s has led to bears returning to their natural habitats across the Carpathian mountains
Slovakia has witnessed several bear attacks in recent years
including its first fatal assault in more than a century
A 57-year-old man was found in the central Banskô valley with his hip
neck and hand mauled and recent bear prints nearby
a German environmental campaigner was badly mauled by a bear in Poland after entering the animal’s lair in the Bieszczady mountains in Poland
but survived after being airlifted to hospital
nationalist coalition government have called for the animals’ status on Slovakia’s endangered species list to be relaxed

outlined a draft law to allow bears to be shot outside urban areas under certain conditions
the Slovakian ministry aims to propose a reclassification of the species at EU level

Foote is one of the five former NHLers facing sexual assault charges over an alleged incident that took place in June 2018 in London
The five players were in London to celebrate their 2018 World Junior Championship gold medal
Last June
reports indicated that a resolution to the case is not remotely close
and a trial won’t likely begin until April 2025
The NHL maintains that there will be no discipline meted out to the five accused players — Foote
Dillon Dube and Alex Formenton — until the criminal case is resolved
All but Formenton were restricted free agents going into the 2024 offseason
and their respective clubs did not give them qualifying offers
The 25-year-old Foote last played in the NHL with the New Jersey Devils in 2023-24
Foote had five goals and 15 assists for 20 points in 145 regular-season games with the Devils
Nashville Predators and Tampa Bay Lightning
Foote has also played in 13 career Stanley Cup Playoff games
Despite not appearing in a playoff game during the Lightning’s 2021 Stanley Cup run
Foote also scored 20 goals and 53 assists for 73 points in 179 regular-season AHL games across six seasons with the Comets and Syracuse Crunch
17 overall by the Lightning in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft
Foote spent three seasons playing with the Western Hockey League’s Kelowna Rockets
scoring 33 goals and 130 assists for 163 points in 202 regular-season games
a man was attacked and injured by a bear near the village of Hybe
Liptovský Mikuláš district
Later on the same day he succumbed to his injuries
The animal hit one of the main arteries on a lower limb
The man was mushroom-picking with another person in hard-to-access terrain; a helicopter
police patrol and the Brown Bear Emergency Team were dispatched to the site
the Liptovský Mikuláš District Office declared an emergency situation in the district
allowing the authorities to carry out rescue work related to the identification and capture of the bear in question
The first fatal bear attack in Slovakia occurred in 2021 in the Liptov region
Saturday's incident marks the second recorded fatality in the country’s history
Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer) called on local authorities to declare an emergency situation in the event a brown bear wanders into municipalities
creating conditions to reduce their numbers
"Someone might say that we can address the situation with a nationwide shooting
sending hundreds of hunters into forests and solving the problem our way
but we are in the European Union and I don't want to face more threats of the European Commission stopping our European funds," he declared
head of the parliamentary committee for agriculture and environment
proposed eliminating up to 30 bears regularly found near human dwellings
adding that on Saturday night two more bears were culled
Environment Minister Tomáš Taraba (SNS nominee) wants to present a proposal so that every national park has its own intervention team to shoot bears on its territory
with a team in the High and Low Tatras to be established first
Taraba also wants to investigate whether there were legitimate requests to shoot bears in the past months that were not complied with
the My Sme Les (We are the Forest) initiative called on the authorities to stop exploiting the attack for their own political purposes
they should implement preventive measures and educate the public
the initiative asks the ministry to stop blaming activists and conservationists for the tragedy
So it's necessary to state that even the historically highest number of shot bears since 2000 did not prevent the tragic attack," the initiative said
It added that it is impossible to prevent attacks by wild animals
but they can be reduced by educating the public
Slovakia's Liptovský Mikuláš has declared a state of emergency today following a bear attack on Saturday that resulted in the death of a 55-year-old mushroom picker
authorities captured two bears over the weekend
one of which was found near the site of the incident
The attack occurred around noon when the victim was foraging for mushrooms in the forest near the village of Hybe
This incident marks the second fatal bear attack in Slovakia's history
with the first occurring in 2021 in the same area
Tensions between the need for public safety and the preservation of wildlife in Slovakia have been ongoing as officials seek to balance these competing interests in the face of rising bear populations
a 31-year-old woman from Belarus died in Slovakia after being chased by a bear in the Low Tatras mountain range
She was walking with a male companion when they encountered the bear and ran in opposite directions
Rescue teams later found her body in a ravine
According to the BBC
better environmental protection in Central and Eastern Europe since the fall of communism in 1989 has allowed bears to return to their natural habitats in the Carpathian mountain range
extending from Romania through western Ukraine to Slovakia and Poland
assert that Slovakia’s bear population remains stable at around 1,275
calling into question the notion of a bear population explosion

A town in Slovakia issued a warning to residents on Sunday after a bear ran through the city
The town of Liptovský Mikuláš asked residents to be cautious and not leave residential areas as emergency services worked to track down the brown bear
The five people injured range in age from 10 to 72
Emergency teams were instructed to eliminate the bear, town officials said in a statement on Facebook
According to statements released on Facebook
officials said the bear spent about 20 minutes in residential areas before moving into the woods
and six armed patrols are ensuring it does not get back into inhabited areas
Video of the bear circulating online showed the animal moving along a road as pedestrians climbed over a fence to escape

Former Arizona Coyotes draft pick Mitchell Miller has agreed to play for HK 32 Liptovský Mikuláš in the Slovak Extraliga
Miller and another eighth-grader were convicted of bullying and abusing Isaiah Meyer-Crothers at a junior high school in Sylvania
The incident was described in detail in a police report obtained by The Athletic and first reported by The Arizona Republic
rubbed a candy push-pop inside a urinal at the school during a girls basketball game and enticed Meyer-Crothers to put it in his mouth
nearly falling over with laughter when he did
Both Miller and McKie were punished by the school with suspensions; Miller’s punishment was greater
because he lied repeatedly to school administrators
who confirmed the reports of other students by using the school’s security cameras
a foster mother to 57 kids over the last 10 years
said the abuse by Miller started in second grade and involved repeated racial slurs
such as calling her son a “n—–” and telling him to “go pick cotton,” among other racist comments
Miller’s past was not a secret — it was reported on at the time by the Toledo Blade — and it quickly surfaced when NHL teams did even rudimentary background checks before the draft
At least 10 NHL clubs took Miller off their 2020 draft lists
and Miller provided all 31 teams with a letter of apology while a freshman at the University of North Dakota
Miller was selected by the Coyotes in the fourth round of the 2020 NHL Draft but had his draft status revoked by the team after it was revealed he had been convicted in juvenile court of bullying
the Coyotes acknowledged they knew of Miller’s past before drafting him
being at the forefront of diversity initiatives comes with the responsibility of helping players like Mitchell
“When we first learned of Mitchell’s story
it would have been easy for us to dismiss him — many teams did,” the club statement read
we felt it was our responsibility to be a part of the solution in a real way — not just saying and doing the right things ourselves but ensuring that others are too.”
consisted of two lengthy paragraphs that painted his juvenile conviction as a life-changing event
It also included “character references” from several hockey coaches and his USHL billet family

despite the controversy surrounding the defenseman

Amid public outrage over the signing, Bruins left winger Nick Foligno said it is “hard for us to swallow,” with captain Patrice Bergeron adding that “the culture we built here goes against that type of behavior.”
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman called Miller’s actions as a 14-year-old “reprehensible” and said the Bruins did not consult the league before signing Miller.
Neely and the Bruins rescinded its offer to Miller “based on new information” and offered an apology to the Meyer-Crothers family.

Locals have been using the site as an informal beach, but the shoreline is overgrown.
On the shores of Liptovská Mara, one of Slovakia’s largest reservoirs, a long-missed escape is taking shape. While two public beaches exist elsewhere on the lake, Liptovský Mikuláš has never had one of its own – until now. The town has begun work on a long-awaited waterfront, offering locals and visitors a rare stretch of open shoreline with free access to the water.
The 5,000-square-metre beach is taking shape on the lake’s eastern bank, between a gravel pit and an old main road. The first phase – clearing overgrown shrubs and reshaping the shoreline – is already underway. If all goes to plan, the beach will be ready by summer, just in time to mark 50 years since Liptovská Mara was created.
“We are creating a beautifully landscaped waterfront stretching 700 metres [in the Palúdzka area], where people can relax,” said Mayor Ján Blcháč.
Beyond sunbathing and swimming, the town is planning additional facilities. A volleyball court, dry toilets, and changing cabins are in the works, along with a refreshment stand. Parking, a recurring issue at Liptovská Mara’s existing beaches in Liptovský Trnovec and Liptovská Sielnica, is also being addressed.
New parking spaces are planned near the gravel pit, but with the beach a kilometre from the main road, the town is considering a shuttle service to prevent congestion.
Every spring, Liptovská Mara is partially drained, revealing land that spends most of the year submerged. Locals and visitors take the opportunity to explore these rarely seen shores, a fleeting glimpse into the lake’s hidden landscape.
But in recent weeks, concerns have surfaced in the media: with dry conditions persisting, the water level might remain unusually low – long after spring will have passed.
The water level of Liptovská Mara is currently exceptionally low (video):

Canadian Spencer Barber now plays in Liptovský Mikuláš
but professional football has taken him to the USA
New Zealand – and now Liptovský Mikuláš
is the newest member of the MFK Tatran Liptovský Mikuláš football team
The young striker was scouted by the club to strengthen its attacking ranks
which plays in New Zealand's Northern League
His flight from Auckland to Slovakia took the best part of a day
"I had to quickly get used to the cold weather, as just a few days before my departure, I was still lying on the beach," the footballer recalled in an interview with the MY Liptov website.
Barber says he used to play soccer growing up
and his father would take young Spencer to soccer games
and sometimes they would kick a ball together
"That's why I was always drawn to football
but football won out," recalls the footballer
His move to Slovakia sees him embarking on a new chapter in his career
Before coming to Liptovský Mikuláš
the Barber had a successful stint playing in countries with different football cultures
He explains that while his time in Gibraltar was enjoyable
he knew that greater opportunities awaited him in larger markets
Returning to Europe was a conscious decision to showcase his skills in a more competitive environment
one differences between football here and in the other countries where he has played is the money that is invested not only in football
This is especially true when compared to America
where there are university teams and programmes
Canada is still "evolving" in soccer
but has made a lot of progress in the last five years
a lot of Canadian soccer players are getting offers from European teams
He knew almost nothing about Slovak football before arriving
but of course he had heard about the country
"I have been watching the World Cup since I was a kid and I saw you play ..
I like old films – where Slovakia is not mentioned
but Czechoslovakia – and that stuck in my mind," says the footballer
the Canadian is adjusting to a new footballing culture
He notes that the players here are strong and fight hard for every ball
Along with his change in location have come differences in cuisine
Barber was amazed that in Slovakia it is common to have soup for lunch as well as a main course
I like everything and my favourite soup is chicken broth," he adds
He also shares his surprise at how quickly he adapted to the cold weather in Slovakia after years spent in warmer climates
the temperature in Liptovský Mikuláš was -8°C
a stark contrast to the tropical weather he had recently enjoyed
he quickly got used to the chilly conditions and is now focused on his goal of helping the team win the 2nd League title and secure promotion to the top tier
The footballer also has high praise for his teammates and the club's leadership
Bielák ensured that he was well taken care of
adding that the whole club is united in working towards promotion
he is optimistic about staying at Liptovský Mikuláš if the team meets its goals
as they continue to push for greater success
The red-necked wallaby became a familiar figure in northern Slovakia
until a car crash on a quiet evening ended its journey
For nearly a year and a half, a red-necked wallaby hopped around Liptovský Mikuláš
often misidentified as a kangaroo by Slovak media
even survived a harsh winter in the Liptov region
Reports of its presence in the wild first surfaced last summer
Those familiar with keeping exotic animals were unsurprised by the wallaby’s ability to survive the winter
Predators and the risk of being hit by a car posed far greater threats
the wallaby was struck by a car on the evening of Tuesday
The accident occurred on the road between Vitálišovce and Smrečany
an area where the animal had often been seen
collided with the wallaby when it suddenly jumped into his path
but the wallaby did not survive,” confirmed the Žilina Region Police on social media
locals mistook the animal for a hare or a deer
it became clear that a wallaby had taken up residence in the Liptov region
The animal was most often spotted near Vitálišovce
Videos even captured it hopping along Liptovská Mara
a water reservoir near Liptovská Ondrašová
International media also covered the wallaby’s unexpected appearance in this cold
It is believed that the red-necked wallaby had escaped from a private collection
finding an unlikely home in the wilds of Slovakia

Emergency situation declared in Liptovský Mikuláš
Two bear-related incidents occurred over the last weekend
the police received an emergency call that a Belarusian couple
were being chased by an animal in the Demänovská Dolina valley near the town of Liptovský Mikuláš
According to the man who was eventually rescued unharmed
the two separated when they came across the bear
with apreliminary report suggesting that she had fallen and suffered devastating injuries to her head
The circumstances are still being investigated
The Mountain Rescue Service stated that the two set out on a hike to Siná Mountain from the village of Lazisko
there is no official marked trail to the mountain
The area has a 5th degree of protection; starting with the 3rd degree
hikers are only allowed on marked trails one hour after sunrise and one hour before sunset
Environment Minister Tomáš Taraba (SNS nom.) blamed both NGOs and the Constitutional Court for the death of the woman
"According to the Slovak Constitutional Court ruling
shooting bears on a large scale is not allowed
So I congratulate the Constitutional Court
The ministry noted in this regard that Slovakia and Romania are going to submit a proposal to the next meeting of the Council of EU Environment Ministers
which would allow effective and active control of the bear population
a bear was spotted running through the centre of Liptovský Mikuláš
One man suffered injuries after the animal attacked him
four other people injured while running away
The police tried to scare the animal away by using vehicles; eventually
the bear swam across the river Váh and ran into a forest in an uninhabited area
A number of strike teams are continuously searching for the animal
The town declared an emergency situation over the bear attack
calling on locals not to venture outside residential areas
in particular in the evening and early morning hours
was sent to the gallows in the early 18th century
There are many stories and places linked to the controversial Juraj Jánošík
a Slovak hero to some and an outlaw to others
but the exact place where he was sent to the gallows remains a mystery
the Terchová native went on trial for his crimes and hung on a hook at the Šibeničky execution site in Liptovský Mikuláš on March 17
The town has recently installed a gallows replica made of steel in a place that is believed to be the site where the actual Šibeničky gallows once stood
“Everyone knows where Jánošík was born and where he was arrested
the location of Jánošík’s execution has not yet been presented,” said Liptovský Mikuláš mayor Ján Blcháč
The outlaw was jailed in a manor house in Palúdzka
which lies next to the Liptovská Mara water dam and is a stone’s throw away from the mountains
decided to place its new site 2.5 kilometres east of the historical centre
“The execution of the folk hero is not to be bragged about
but it was part of the history of our town,” the mayor said
The new black-and-silver gallows feature several symbolic pieces that represent the Kriváň peak and the parchment with his sentence
The site was constructed by designer Stanislav Machovčák and painter Miroslav Michálek
tourists can also find the Jánošík torture chamber in the underground of the Janko Kráľ Museum
Blcháč went on to say that the citizens of Liptovský Mikuláš publicly apologised to Terchová residents for the execution of Jánošík in 2018
symbolises this act of reconciliation between the two towns
Jánošík is said to have been executed in the eastern part of the town
in between Liptovský Mikuláš and Okoličné
another one of the town’s boroughs today
Katarína Verešová of the Janko Kráľ Museum claimed
was built in an elevated place so that the convicts could be seen from a distance
which grew here until the mid-20th century
“Šibeničky was still used as the execution site at the beginning of the 19th century,” the museum worker said
“when the outlaw Matej Tatarka was the last to be executed here.”

Now that winter is in full swing and many places are blanketed with snow
birds are struggling to find food for themselves
and large-hearted people in Slovakia want to help them
“We feed birds only in the winter and when the weather is unfavourable,” the BirdLife Slovakia organisation stressed
saying people should not feed birds when there is enough food in nature
roasted and smoked bits of food and pasta for birds
“Feeders must be placed in a safe place,” the organisation added
Leaving them near busy roads and areas with glass is not advised
The feeders should also be big enough for large bird species such as the blackbird and woodpecker
Here are some tips on what some birds love to eat:
On the last day of each year, people living in the Kysuce region, northern Slovakia, traditionally hike to the Veľká Rača peak

a large part of the peak was declared a nature reserve in the seventies
Most hikers set out on their trip from Oščadnica-Dedovka
but Veľká Rača is reachable from other towns - Stará Bystrica (green)
Zborov nad Bystricou (yellow) and Nová Bystrica (blue) – as well
it takes about two hours to hike Veľká Rača
People often use their cross-country skis to reach the peak in the winter
and they can make their trip shorter by using a cable car
a wooden cross and a Polish hut for tourists with year-round operation can be found on the peak
you can enjoy and see other mountains in the distance

Thanks to frequent public transport and a great cable-car system
you can explore most of the Jasná resort in one day
a borough that today belongs to the village of Demänovská Dolina
“What I’m proposing today doesn’t have to be a utopia
and Jasná by cable car remains unfulfilled to this day
the northern and southern side of Chopok have been joined together via chairlifts
depositing you at the Srdiečko/Trangoška end stop.) It is very easy to reach the resort from either side without a car indeed
I decided to head to Jasná while the sunny and warm days were still with us
“Jasná is wonderful in summer as well,” the resort’s director Jiří Trumpeš told me
the second highest peak (2,024m) in the Low Tatras
and even continue along the ridge to Ďumbier
A lake that is used to produce artificial snow in winter
and which is located next to the final bus stop and the first cable-car stop
was my first visual contact with the resort
anyone can rent a pedalo here and take gorgeous photos from their boat
with the resort and mountain scenery posing in the background
which is next to a children’s fun zone with trampolines and tubing track
leading visitors to the nearby Vrbické Pleso
a natural mountain lake that is the largest of its kind in the Low Tatras and enjoys level-five nature protection
But my first real experience with the resort started with a visit to the new
clean and – rather unusually for Slovakia – free public toilets
I was not the only visitor to leave impressed
I overheard a group of Polish hikers commenting on the facility
which they intimated was superior to anything they’d seen in Poland
“To jest [It is] super,” a Polish girl uttered
including the controversial new Hotel Damian
grew smaller as the cable car moved towards the second station
a sheep farm called Salaš Priehyba finds its home in summer
started by local animal carer Peter Kompiš
the Wallachian sheep (Valaška in Slovak)
Unbothered by the cable cars above their heads
they graze on part of a ski slope that is used for skiing competitions
It’s named after Petra Vlhová
Three Pyrenean mountain dogs – Soleil du monde (straight from the Pyrenees)
the only female dog in the group of these giant white guardians – protect the herd of more than 40 Valaškas
“They grew up with sheep from their birth,” said Veronika
The dogs may bark at people if they bend over the fence or try to open an enclosure
It is even possible to enter the enclosure and pat the shaggy dogs if a shepherd is nearby
you can get into another cable car and head straight to Chopok peak
a former shelter for workers who built the cable cars after the Second World War
return to Biela Púť or continue to the southern side of Chopok
Another cable car – this one is called the A2 – took me to the Kosodrevina station
Next to the station stands the Kosodrevina restaurant
In the former cable car operator’s room
visitors can find a small museum devoted to the history of cable cars and skiing in Jasná
after the Swiss company that made the first chairlift for this area
and it looks like an old-school cable car station
But the Kosodrevina station also offers three-wheeled adventure thanks to its fleet of mountain carts
These reminded me of my childhood when my brothers and I used to share a small cart at our grandma’s that we would ride down the road
After signing a paper acknowledging the safety risks and donning a helmet, I set off on a wild 2.6-kilometre ride down the zig-zag and rocky ski slope to the Krupová cable car station. This time, my cart had a number – 13, so I felt like a proper hillclimb race driver, although my mountain cart only went down hill. The ticket price ranges from €16 to €37
depending on whether you also want a cable-car ticket to return to Chopok or Biela Púť
Krupová is the last cable car station in the Jasná resort
or the first one if you start off your trip on the southern side of Chopok
does not operate as frequently as those on the northern side
and enjoy the music while you wait for the cable car to leave
stands next to the tourist information centre in Biela Púť.)
As for food, the Kosodrevina and Kamienka restaurants are good places to try. They both offer spectacular views of the mountains. Hearty stews, steamed buns with butter and poppyseed, and that Slovak perennial fried cheese have long been a traditional part of the menus at these restaurants. The Tatra Mountain Resorts company, which owns the Jasná resort, operates seven hotels in Jasná
including the Hotel Liptov near Vrbické Pleso and Hotel Tri Studničky in Demänovská Dolina
A standard room for one person a night costs about €60 or more at the Liptov
while a standard room at the latter hotel will cost at least three times more
which makes guests feel like they are staying at a mountain hut
It is located near the Krupová station
All these hotels operate their own restaurants
After half an hour spent at Krupová
I set out on a cable-car trip back to Biela Púť
I stopped at the sheep farm to say a final goodbye to my fluffy friends and then headed down to where I had begun my one-day adventure
Standing by a railing next to the tourist information centre
and people were gradually leaving the resort
Thinking of the things I had not managed to see
and already considering my next trip to Jasná
I told myself that it was about time for me to go home as well

HC Košice - MHK 32 Liptovský Mikuláš 2:1 pp (0:0
MHK 32 Liptovský Mikuláš: Košarišťan (Hollý) – Gründling
Košice entered the match better than the opponent
as their 1st goal chance came as soon as the first minute of the match
Košarišťan demonstrated his experience by blocking the shot
Sukeľ launched an interesting forward action by leaving the puck to his team-mate
but the opponent didn't manage to outsmart Habal
Jenčík was passed an ideal puck exactly to the goal-field
where he found himself in a face-to-face duel against Košarišťan
The goalie was more successful again and so the score didn't change
Hovorka was in a goal chance before the end of the period
but he did not succeed and the ice rink was left with the score 0:0
During the second period of the full regulation time
both teams performed a rather defensive game
so we had to wait for the first goal chance to the 27th minute
Koyš fought his way right to the goal-field
Košice got hold of the puck and Miklík took this opportunity to score
the puck bounced back from the plexi-glass right in front of Habal
Richard Rapáč used this opportunity and scored an equalizer to 1:1
The introductory minutes of the final period belonged to the home Steelers
who pressed into the attacking zone and got into an interesting goal chance
Suja with the puck on his hockey stick skated around the net and tried to score
but Košarišťan handled the situation with Tabačka's help
This was followed by another action of Hričina
he couldn't place the puck to the net beneath the replacing Košarišťan
Habal blocked the action of outnumbered players of Liptovský Mikuláš
so the equal score 1:1 was followed by the overtime
Košice were at an advantage of a power play
but they did not turn this opportunity into a goal
the home players decided about the victory
coach of Košice: "This was a rather demanding match for us
in which Liptovský Mikuláš profitted from its high-quality defense
coach of Liptovský Mikuláš: "The guys were well prepared for today's match and they fulfilled our expectations
we didn't make account of our little prevalence
a point from the match against Košice means a lot to us."
Cable car exhibited in the square of Liptovský Mikuláš attracts visitors to museum in newly opened exhibition
A new attraction has appeared in the square of Liptovský Mkuláš – cable car to Chopok from 1949 with a side seat
It is luring visitors of the Liptov region to the Janko Kráľ Museum in Liptovský Mikuláš to the new Via Lens exhibition of Alojz Lutonský
He is behind the initiative of building the first cable car in the Low Tatras and he was a pioneer of Tatra tourism
“We are glad to locate this monument at least temporarily in front of the building of the town’s museum,” said current head of the museum
Alojz Lutonský was also head of the museum in the years 1963 and 1969
The new exhibition is accessible for the public until August 31
Near the Aqua Park close to the Liptovský Mikuláš was opened an original attraction
Its owner wants to show to tourists how it works in Slovakia
Entrepreneur Cyril Fogaš has reacted to his experiences with state authorities in his own way
he built an unusual house that is turned upside down with the roof on the ground
but during the summer season it will be open from 9:00 to 21:00
so twelve hours per day,” stated Fogaš for the SITA newswire
There are two fairy tale themed kids’ rooms in the house
One of them displays the fairy tale Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and the other shows Little Red Riding Hood
There will also be a standard children's room
a full bathroom with a toilet and a separate WC
because the whole structure of the house is made from steel and anchored to a concrete base
“The house is inclined by twelve degrees on both sides
so in a lateral and also longitudinal plane,” explained Fogaš
people will have a greater experience from the visit.”
He added that exactly this inclination causes a feeling of slanted standing and walking while in the house
“It is interesting to watch as principles of gravity work
they cannot be fooled,” Fogaš said for the SITA
The upside-down house is a reflection of uncertainty
but also in the whole republic many things work as it is popularly said - on the head
so it means to the contrary or incomprehensibly,” explained Fogaš
escaped deportation as the only one of his family
Rescuers: Ján a Katarína Ozvald
his uncles Ján Feuereisen and Lajos Feuereisen
Until the beginning of the deportations of Jews from Slovakia in 1942
David Sivor (then under the name of Pavel Suchostaver) spent his time between his father's family in Bratislava and his mother's family in Liptovský Mikuláš
“I was seven when anti-Semitic sentiment started in Bratislava
I remember the unpleasant feeling of being called a Jew,” David said
was exempted from deportation for being a professional whose services were vital to the state; this exemption also applied to his close relatives
David was with his mother in Liptovský Mikuláš attending 1st grade in the Jewish primary school
his mother received a phone call from their Bratislava neighbor Ernest Kordoš
David’s mother’s cousin did not want to leave
his wife and their 11-year-old daughter were deported to a synagogue and later to the gas chambers
David’s family received an order from the deportation office to leave their house in three days
David’s parents found a shelter in a wooden house of a Belarusian called Birjukov
David’s grandparents were sent to Bratislava Jewish ghetto
His grandfather could not deal with the situation and died soon after
his wife presented his exemption certificate in time to save them
when the Slovak National Uprising against the Nazi rule in Slovakia erupted
two of his uncles and a cousin from his mother’s side found a shelter at the Ozvald family's house in Podunajské Biskupice
It is amazing to imagine how five people could be hidden in such a small place
David and the son of Ján Ozvald became friends
They often went to fields to harvest cucumbers and gather cow-dung as fertilizer
One day police conducted a search at the Ozvald family's house as probably neighbors informed the police
but they went silent after he let them lick his fingers
The rest of the family members were detained and deported
David left the Ozvald family and he subsequently moved to other hideouts
when I returned to our house on Skrovankova Street
My mother returned from Theresienstadt,” David recalls.
