Shocking attacks in university town of Nitra leave students terrified to speak their mother tongue
When Nazar and his friends sat down for a meal at a local shopping centre in Nitra
a Slovak university town east of Bratislava
and punched by a group of young people who took offence at their language
“‘Ukrainian scum, dumb Ukrainians, and morons,’ they called us,” Nazar, a university student originally from Ukraine, told the Slovak daily Sme
“They told us to go outside and ‘talk like men.’”
all enrolled at Constantine the Philosopher University (UKF)
were attacked on 31 March and again the following day by groups of local youths.
“People didn’t react to the attacks at all,” said Nazar
The university responded with a warning email on 11 April
urging foreign students to report incidents directly to the police
Police confirmed multiple complaints were under investigation
“Steps are being taken to identify victims and clarify the matter,” said regional police spokesperson Viktória Borloková
The assaults have raised the alarm among the student community
particularly among those speaking Ukrainian or Russian
told Sme that she now avoids speaking her native language in public
I no longer feel safe in Nitra,” she said
The university confirmed that at least two incidents involving physical attacks against its students had recently occurred
Both took place in public areas outside university grounds
shocked the nation when a Hungarian-speaking student
was assaulted on her way to an exam in Nitra
Her case became a long-standing political flashpoint in Slovakia’s minority rights discourse
Security staff at the Promenáda shopping centre
said they regretted what happened and provided contact details to the victims
The centre’s management said it was fully cooperating with police and described such incidents as rare
Some students now avoid the area altogether
especially near the Promenáda.”
The attacks have intensified discussions about xenophobia in Slovakia at a time when the country is hosting thousands of Ukrainian refugees
Nazar has since filed a criminal complaint
the fear now outweighs the sense of welcome

Archaeologists have uncovered the largest Bronze Age burial site of the Nitra culture near Olomouc in Central Moravia
during their rescue research on the future D35 motorway route between Krelov and Neredin
representatives of the Olomouc Archaeological Centre told CTK today
The extensive burial site of the Nitra culture
which inhabited the territory of eastern Moravia and south-western Slovakia in the Middle Bronze Age (2100-1800 BC)
is one of the most significant discoveries of this research
making the site the largest from this culture
The graves contained skeletal remains and burial gifts
Men and women were buried in different positions and were accompanied by different objects
while women had jewellery and antler beads in their graves
Archaeologists also uncovered a burial site of the Corded Ware culture (2600 BC) at the site
four apparently belonging to men who were buried with ceramic vessels
there were circular grooves around the graves
probably the remains of wooden structures that separated the sacred space of the burial site from the surrounding area
the experts said the graves of the Nitra culture and the Corded Ware culture were interesting because they had not interfered with each other
The archaeologists at the site in Krelov identified four different burial periods
“The area was used for burial purposes for more than 3,000 years
from the end of the Late Stone Age until the 9th century
when the Slavic population lived here on the territory of the Great Moravia state,” added Nikola Orlitova
the grave of a Germanic warrior with a shield and an iron spear from the 3rd century
the first such discovery in Central Moravia
Experts also uncovered seven cremation graves at the burial site
where they found typical metal jewellery associated with the Celts
The archaeological rescue excavation on the D35 route in the section between Krelov and Slavonin was carried out from August 2023 to April 2024
the found artefacts and skeletal remains will be analysed
Experts should thereby gain new insights into the physical appearance of the inhabitants

The York Theatre Company is currently reviving the Tony nominated musical
Shoshana Greenberg
Nitra McAuliffe (formerly Scharfman) is one of three writers of 1975’s The Lieutenant
a rock musical about the 1968 My Lai Massacre in Vietnam and the subsequent trial of the Lieutenant William Calley
The musical opened to good reviews on Broadway and earned multiple Tony nominations
but closed after nine performances and basically disappeared from history
The Lieutenant is getting its first-ever professional New York revival as part of the York Theatre’s Musicals in Mufti series through September 17
While women composers had some success on Broadway at that time
most notably Micki Grant with Don’t Bother Me
McAuliffe joined the ranks of about five others that decade with these nine performances
And like so many women who write musical-theater
her name and accomplishments are not well known
she also served as assistant supervising court reporter in the Supreme Court in the criminal division in Manhattan for 30 years
McAuliffe spoke this week about working on serious subject matter
her experience from Queens to Broadway to the York

I did not have formal training like going to a music school or anything like that
I had quite a varied scope of things that I did
I had gone to the High School of Industrial Arts [now the High School of Art and Design]
I thought I was going to be a fashion illustrator
but I found music was more interesting to me
and of course if you’re going to work on a play you want to work on something that interests you
and we found we worked wonderfully together — in my house
with my kids running around having to listen to it all day
And it was just wonderful working with the guys
One of the biggest problems we had was we had such a tiny budget
but we were closed and we couldn’t reopen
It was too expensive to try to bring it back
I just remember when the Tony nominations came out and the box office phone was ringing
It was still gratifying to see it all come to life
to see all the fabulous people involved and what they brought to the show
I’ve always thought it was just a wonderful gift that we had
It doesn’t have a great amount of choreography and changing sets
Here we have people playing two and three roles
I found the York production affected me more profoundly
The musical opens at the Imperial Theatre on April 10

15 percent of Nitra’s population is made up of people from abroad
These are not illegal migrants but individuals who have come here for work and are welcomed," the Slovak president stated

ne of the very last known talmidim of the prewar Nitra yeshivah
when it was the last surviving yeshivah on the European continent
the ways of the yeshivah clinging to him as he sat in the beis medrash well into his nineties
writing notes on the Gemara like a diligent yeshivah bochur; as he led Shacharis last Rosh Hashanah with emotion and solemnity; and as he treated those around him with old-world courtesy
was a very prominent chassid of Reb Shaya’le zy”a
and she had helped Reb Shaya’le’s rebbetzin cook food for the crowds who gathered at their table
But not long after Reb Shaye’le was mesader kiddushin at her wedding to Dovid Lowy
the young couple moved to Pressburg (Bratislava)
and the Oberland influence defined their son’s life
First educated in Pressburg’s Talmud Torah
Binyomin Zev was only 14 when he was sent to learn in Nitra
The yeshivah was led by the venerated Rav Shmuel Dovid Ungar ztz”l of Nitra
a tzaddik whose emphasis on Torah and avodah molded hundreds of talmidim
The young bochur would stay in yeshivah most of bein hazmanim and go home for just a single Shabbos
he recalled approaching the Nitra Rav (known to talmidim simply as “the Rebbe”) to ask permission to go home for a Shabbos
When it’s time to arrange chavrusas and get ready for the new zeman?!”
“But I’ve been here the entire bein hazmanim,” Binyomin Zev explained
“I haven’t seen my parents for a long time.”
“Why didn’t you say that you want to fulfill the mitzvah of kibbud av va’eim
can I go home to my parents to be mekayeim the mitzvah of kibbud av va’eim?”
Binyomin Zev absorbed from this the principle of “b’chol derachecha da’eihu” — whatever you do
always have in mind Hashem’s will — which he carried his entire life
nother life lesson came on Rosh Chodesh Av 1944
German officers tried to assassinate Adolf Hitler
the fake news of Hitler’s death briefly circulated
Bochurim in the Nitra yeshiva were in the middle of reciting Hallel when they heard excited shouts from outside
The bochurim near the window passed the good news around the beis medrash
the Rebbe inquired about the noise in the middle of Hallel
“I knew whoever lived out this milchamah would need big zechusim
Yet you receive such news and speak in the middle of davening
A gabbai advised them to go together to the Rebbe
and take upon themselves never to speak during davening
he would tell this story and implore his doros to do the same — not to speak in Yiddish
ven as Nazis hunted down Yidden across Europe
the Nitra yeshivah continued with regular sedorim and weekly farhers
Local police had been bribed to inform them of German raids
and every bochur had a pre-arranged hiding place
when a Slovakian partisan revolt caused a regime clampdown
Every Jew in Nitra now had to run for his life
Lowy hid with 15 other bochurim in the cramped attic of the beis medrash
The Germans were using the beis medrash below
It bothered him that there was only one exit; if they were discovered
he took out a pocket knife and managed to widen a hole above his head in the roof
the Nazis discovered the little attic and dragged the bochurim out
Binyomin Zev managed to swing himself out over the roof
He ran to a wooded area and hid among the trees overnight
to have the special opportunity Yom Kippur offers
please let me live until Yom Kippur is over
He knew the name of the gentile and the street
he knocked on the first door and asked for the gentile by name
the gentile denied he was harboring anyone
but when Amrom heard his friend and joined him in pleading
the two friends lived and learned from Yom Kippur until Asarah B’Teves
was a newly married yungerman whose wife was hidden in another bunker
He kept a diary because “when we tell our children and grandchildren about this time
they will think we are exaggerating.” In it he recorded learning Mishnayos Moed each day
covering 18 new perakim daily and reviewing 18 previous ones
They also played chess with the irreligious Jew who shared their hiding place
the Nitra Rav hiding in the forest with family members
several bochurim and families in bunkers and hideouts
a rescue activist who had delayed the deportation of Slovakian Jewry for two years and had jumped off a train bound for Auschwitz
had prepared a channel of communication in advance
Reb Amrom and Binyomin Zev received a small Gemara
Binyomin Zev recalled later that the joyful intensity of learning Gemara helped them forget there was a bitter war going on
The final entry in Amrom Weissmandl’s journal was written on Asarah B’Teves
and the three Yidden were dragged to the train station to be transferred to Auschwitz
they realized that even with two SS men guarding them
there might still be a chance to escape if they ran in three different directions
They had been wrong about the guard giving chase — he simply took out his gun and fired at the fleeing Jew
and he was transported to the local hospital
I would call him in to perform the last rites
but as there is no rabbi left in the village
Once he had asked the priest to abandon trying to convert him to the Catholic religion
I place myself in Your hands and I accept whatever You want to do with me
Those three hours were the best in my entire life
he ordered him to be taken to the operating theater
He found that the bullet had just missed essential organs
Binyomin Zev sent a message through a decent gentile nurse to Reb Michoel Ber
while pretending he still could not move from his bed
A disguised Nitra bochur found him at the hospital and placed a bag under his bed containing clothing and a note with instructions
Binyomin Zev met him outside on the appointed night
and the bochur helped him escape to another bunker
the Nitra Rav’s son returned from the forest
bringing the tragic news that the Rav had passed away just five weeks before the liberation
Although they had made a temporary grave in the woods
Binyomin Zev was among the talmidim who went two months later to transfer the Rav to a proper kever in the beis hachayim in Pistcany
the meis was as fresh and whole as if the tzaddik had passed away that day
were later brought to America by Reb Michoel Ber
Although he had a surviving older brother who was going to Eretz Yisrael
Binyomin Zev wanted to go with the yeshivah
who was arranging an out-of-town location for the yeshivah
somewhere the teenaged orphans would not be exposed to the temptations of the city
had survived Auschwitz and the death march and returned to the town
together with the Nitra Rav’s two surviving daughters (later the Klausenburger Rebbetzin and Rebbetzin Fisher)
These orphaned girls traveled with the yeshivah to America
Lowy recalled the poverty that the bochurim were then experiencing
Binyomin Zev drove Reb Michoel Ber around to look for another location
“This is the place I want,” said Rav Michoel Ber
where Binyomin Zev struggled to support his family
working at menial jobs until he found a steady income in electronics repairs
The yeshivah ethos stayed with him in twice-daily learning sessions
but he had envisioned a settlement around it; children growing up in purity
the Lowys joined eight families going to Mount Kisco on a trial basis
There were no houses — they spent the summer in an old building
the Lowys had to decide if they were going back to the city
where their children were enrolled in schools
Their son Chaim Shea recalls: “The entire summer
Should they stay here in the Nitra settlement
He knew that only through learning Gemara with Tosafos would his mind be at its clearest
‘If we go back to Williamsburg to put our children into cheder
we’re leaving Reb Michoel Ber’s yesomim here without a cheder
Whatever will be with Reb Michoel Ber’s children will be with ours.’ ”
he first years in Mount Kisco were very difficult
he commuted an hour each way to his Williamsburg electronics job
my father would go to sleep straight after the Friday night seudah in the winter,” says his son
The commute was taking a heavy toll on his morning and evening learning time
Lowy sought employment in Westchester County
Several employers fired him over the early winter Friday afternoons
until he found a job in nearby White Plains
he led Shacharis davening on Rosh Hashanah until his last year
and the community went silent and waited for him to break down with emotion
unable to continue every year at the end of Modim: “ki mei’olam kivinu Lach [because forever have we hoped to You],” and in yaaleh v’yavo
brain seizure medication kept Reb Binyomin Zev from focusing on his learning
his whole day’s occupation since retirement
No longer could he sit for hours with a chavrusa
easier topics such as Mishnayos and Kitzur Shulchan Aruch filled his schedule
It would have been easy to become depressed at this mental frailty
Any conversation that could lead to sadness or pain or depression was pushed away
He wrote himself notes saying “simchah” and taped them to his sleeve
“We have to carry on b’simchah and never let go
b’chol deracheha da’eihu had never left him

Archaeologists from the Olomouc Archaeological Centre (ACO) have made a remarkable discovery near Olomouc while conducting a rescue excavation along the future route of the D35 highway between Křelov and Neředín
Two significant burial sites have been uncovered
including the largest burial site found from the Nitra culture from the Early Bronze Age in Central Moravia
is considered one of the most important findings in the research of this culture
we can reconstruct the physical appearance of the inhabitants of that time
and migration strategies,” explains lead researcher Vendula Vránová through a press release
The graves contained not only skeletal remains but also goods such as copper ornaments
some of the graves showed signs of post-mortem manipulation
suggesting that transitional burial rituals were performed even after death
This indicates a complex relationship with death and the afterlife within the culture
The burial practices at the site revealed distinct differences between how men and women were interred
Men were often buried with boar tusks and hunting tools
while women were accompanied by jewelry and antler beads
This distinction underscores the cultural significance of gender in ancient Nitra society
The site also yielded graves associated with the Corded Ware culture
suggesting a mutual respect between the two cultures
Earlier graves were likely marked by burial mounds
indicating that the younger culture acknowledged and respected the older burial traditions
Another significant area of the excavation
revealed four different burial periods spanning over 3,000 years
This area was used for burial purposes from the Late Stone Age until the 9th century
coinciding with the presence of Slavic populations in the territory of Great Moravia
archaeologists discovered 17 skeletal graves from the Corded Ware culture
four of which featured deep burial pits with rich grave goods
we also found a pair of axes—one polished and the other flaked,” Vránová explains
Surrounding the graves were circular ditches
likely remnants of wooden structures that delineated the sacred burial space from the surrounding area
This is only the fifth site where archaeologists have successfully identified such boundary ditches
a significant find was the grave of a 3rd-century Germanic warrior
complete with a shield and iron spear—an unprecedented discovery in Moravia
The excavation also revealed seven cremation graves containing typical metal jewelry associated with Celtic culture
The rescue archaeological research along the D35 route was conducted from August 2023 to April 2024
The next phase will involve analyzing the discovered artifacts and skeletal remains
Laboratory analyses aim to provide new insights into the physical characteristics
and genetic relationships of the ancient inhabitants of this region
“Our fieldwork has ended, but now we face the most critical phase—detailed analysis and interpretation of the findings,” Vránová notes

The city and the principal have distanced themselves from the event
Miloš Zverina from the Slavica association brought panels on the 1944 Slovak National Uprising (SNP) to an event involving a military veteran at Škultétyho 1 Primary School in Nitra
They reportedly described the Soviet army's contribution to the SNP in adulatory and misleading terms
Slavica is a "Slavic" group that interprets history from a pro-Russian persepective
After an article titled "Russian Propaganda Directly at a Primary School" appeared on the news website tyzden.sk
"The ministry strongly condemns the exhibition on the Slovak National Uprising (SNP) and World War II
which included elements of political propaganda
that took place at the Nitra primary school
and it emphatically advises schools against hosting similar exhibitions," stated the ministry
It described the exhibition as including political propaganda
and advised schools against hosting such events
The ministry praised the quick response of Nitra town hall
which highlighted the importance of communication with the school and parents to prevent similar incidents
The ministry also announced it would investigate Slavica’s involvement
stated: "We consider such events in public spaces to be absolutely unacceptable
We need to check the facts and determine if the organisers misled the school under the guise of a discussion."
The City of Nitra apologised to the affected children and parents
Varga added that the school was a victim of a hybrid threat
and further assessments and systematic measures are being taken to prevent future incidents
The event was likely organised by "Women in Skirts," a nationalist group that purports to promote traditional values
They boasted on social media about a "successful meeting of a military veteran with students," with Peter Andreánsky
Panels brought by Miloš Zverina commemorated the 80th anniversary of the SNP
clarified in a statement: "We became victims of unwanted propaganda and online disinformation." She distanced the school from Slavica's ideologies
asserting that the talk was about the veteran’s missions
Martincová also acknowledged that the responsible teacher
had failed to inform her about the event in advance
leading to the propaganda material being displayed
The school has now implemented measures to prevent a recurrence
The unnamed teacher added that with conspiracy theorists in high places
it’s difficult to manage such situations
"Imagine inviting someone like [MP and conspiracy theorist Peter] Kotlár to speak about his Covid theories
Would that be educational or spreading conspiracy?"
