Some 200 people were aboard the train traveling from the Czech capital of Prague crossing through Slovakia on its way to the Hungarian capital of Budapest when the accident took place shortly Thursday after 5 p.m
(1500 GMT) at a crossing near the town of Nove Zamky
The collision that left seven people dead was likely caused by human error
the Slovak transport minister said on Friday
The train engine caught fire after the crash while the bus was badly damaged and broke into two parts
said that heavy rains hit the area on Wednesday
forcing the closure of the railroad track to all traffic
Preliminary results from the investigation showed no technical or systemic errors had occurred
“It was likely an individual human error which caused the train to appear on a track where it wasn’t supposed to be,” he said
Five injured people from the bus were transported to hospitals in nearby towns and cities
The local hospital was closed Thursday because of flooding from the heavy rain overnight

Ritchie, 28, last played in the NHL with the Coyotes and Flames in the 2022-23 season. He began the year in Arizona and was a decent depth scoring option, scoring nine goals and 12 assists for 21 points in 58 games. At the trade deadline, he was dealt to the Flames for his brother, Brett Ritchie
and finished the year with five points in 16 games for Calgary
He wasn’t re-signed upon reaching unrestricted free agency
Ritchie had to settle for a professional tryout
inking a PTO to attend the Blues’ training camp in 2023 but was released and wasn’t offered a contract
That signaled the likely end of Ritchie’s NHL career unless he could dominate on an AHL contract or overseas
The 2014 10th overall pick attempted to do the latter
He scored just once and posted a whopping 70 PIMs and a -7 rating in 10 games
and he finished the year in Germany with the Iserlohn Roosters
where things didn’t go much better with two points and a -4 rating in eight appearances
Unsigned for this year up to this point, Ritchie will now look to ply his trade in a slightly less competitive European professional circuit in Slovakia. He joins Nove Zamky’s roster as the only player with NHL experience besides defenseman Shawn Lalonde
who appeared in one game with the Blackhawks in the 2012-13 season
Ritchie’s NHL stats will likely remain where they are until he retires
The 6’3″ left-winger made 481 appearances for the Ducks
scoring 84 goals and adding 102 assists for 186 points

At least six people have been killed and five others injured after a passenger train and bus collided at a railway crossing in southern Slovakia
The crash occurred just after 5pm (3pm GMT) near the south-western town of Nové Zámky
told AFP the Eurocity train had been heading from Prague to Budapest
“Six people suffered injuries incompatible with life,” the Slovak rescue service said
said the injured required “immediate medical assistance”
adding: “I am afraid the number of people killed in this accident might grow.”
Bahylova said the driver of the train “suffered burns because the locomotive caught on fire”
She said the collision occurred at a railway crossing that was protected by barriers and was equipped with light signals

The 29-year-old Canadian will suit up in the National League team's colors for the remainder of the season
Jayce Hawryluk went into last autumn without a club. In late October, he eventually signed with Slovakian representative HC Nove Zamky. Three months later, the Canadian is already on the move again - to join EHC Kloten
"Jayce is an extremely dangerous and versatile forward who stands out with a great skill set and brings additional variability to the lineup"
"We are delighted to have him on board as a reinforcement for the decisive phase of the regular season!"
Hawryluk spent his later junior years with the WHL's Brandon Wheat Kings
He was drafted 32nd overall by the Florida Panthers in 2014
The years after joining the organization saw him get a lot of appearances in the AHL and eventually the NHL
and finally Nove Zamky before now coming to Switzerland
His new club would like to point out that this contract was signed before the recent occurrences
On Friday, 14 March, the town commemorated 80 years since the most devastating bombing.
The first air raid struck on 7 October 1944, lasting 37 minutes. A total of 164 aircraft dropped 359 tonnes of bombs, killing 2,000 people, including civilians, soldiers, and Russian prisoners of war. The second bombing, on 14 October, claimed another 400 lives.
The most destructive raid occurred on 14 March 1945. It lasted 65 minutes, killing 1,600 people and levelling much of the town.
“One of the bombs landed right in our garden, and the earth from the crater buried our bunker. It took rescuers four hours to find us and dig us out, barely alive,” recalled one of the survivors František Daniel, who was just four years old at the time and survived being buried under the rubble.
Over time, he began to study documents related to the bombing.
Years later, he obtained an image from the archives of the 15th U.S. Army, taken from an altitude of 3.5 kilometres. When he zoomed in, he found his own house, the bomb crater, and the shelter where he had hidden during the bombing.
"It was essentially my grave because I had been buried alive for four hours. It was strange to look at a picture of myself buried beneath cubic metres of earth," he described in 2019, recalling the unsettling experience.
Around 400 people lost their lives in the vicinity of the railway station and the surrounding residential district. In addition, several streets were hit, including G. Bethlen Street, Cyrilometodská Street, T. G. Masaryk Street, and SNP Street.
"In 1944, these streets were known as Naszvadi, Bethlen Gábor, Horthy Miklós, and Szt. Anna út," revealed Daniel.
The RDX bombs were filled with hexogen, so the bombs penetrated the roof and exploded inside the buildings.
This ranks Nové Zámky among the European cities most affected by the fighting during World War II. They had to be largely rebuilt after the war.
Of the 3,394 residential buildings, 2,023 were destroyed, leaving 5,800 people homeless. Many historic landmarks, including the town hall, the archbishop’s palace, the Zlatý lev hotel, and the synagogue, were reduced to ruins. “The archbishop’s palace, the town hall, the Zlatý lev hotel, the Neolog synagogue, and the Neolog Jewish school were all damaged,” stated historian Pavol Rusnák.
Lívia Hoffmanová, who worked at the regional court, survived two of the bombings but never forgot the third: "There was a large room in the cellar. Benches lined the sides, and a table stood in the middle. During the air raid, two boys, aged six or seven, were playing at the table," she recalled 11 years ago.
"One bomb shook the entire building, everything was falling, and we ran wherever we could. When we returned, we weren’t allowed back inside. A bomb had landed directly in the cellar on that table and killed both boys."

At least seven people were killed when a train from the Czech capital of Prague to the Hungarian capital of Budapest collided with a local bus at a level crossing in southern Slovakia
The collision took place shortly after 5pm on Thursday near the town of Nove Zamky, located about 80km east of the capital Bratislava
Those killed were on the bus while the 200 people on the Eurocity train were safe, according to Slovakia's rescue service.
Five people who sustained injuries, including the drivers of the bus and the train, were taken to hospitals in nearby towns and cities because the local one was closed on Thursday because of flooding from heavy rain overnight.
The bus driver was admitted in a critical condition. A spokesperson for his Arriva bus company told local media that the driver had over 30 years of experience.
"I am afraid the number of people killed in this accident might grow," Petra Klimesova, a spokesperson for the rescue service, told AFP.
Video footage showed the engine of the train on fire and railway officials said the bus was badly damaged in the crash.
Katarina Molnarova, who was on the train, said she heard a crash and a bang just as they left Nove Zamky station. "After a couple of minutes we were able to get off," she told AFP. "We saw that the frontal part of the train was on fire.”
Slovakia's interior minister, Matus Sutai Estok, visited the scene of the accident. He said the dead weren’t immediately identified.
"Let this sad event be a reminder for all of us to pay attention to safety on the roads and at railroad crossings," he said in a post on social media.
The train track linking Bratislava with Budapest was to remain closed until at least 4am.
The stranded passengers aboard the stricken train were being transported by buses to the town of Sturovo on the Hungarian border, the railway service said.
The driver of the engine, a Czech national, escaped with light burns, said the Czech Railways, its owner.
It was not immediately clear what caused the crash and authorities were investigating. The crossing is protected by gates.
Slovakia's president, Peter Pellegrini, who was in Brussels to attend a summit of European Union leaders, offered his condolences to relatives of the dead.
"I wish the injured a speedy recovery and thank the doctors and rescue teams for their work done," Mr Pellegrini said. "I wish that such catastrophes would spare Slovakia in the future."

the team does have 2020 second-round selections Brock Faber and Helge Grans already at that position
best player available has to be taken into account over positional need

Clarke would be a great fit for the Kings if selected with the eighth-overall pick

Hughes would be a nice add as a left-shot defenseman for the Kings
Hughes has that modern defenseman blend of skills

The long-term lack of employees was deepened by the pandemic
The Slovak Railway Company (ZSSK) is currently short of engine drivers
The lack of drivers was amplified by the holiday season and deepened by the pandemic
The expert training of new engine drivers have been suspended for a long time
said spokesperson Tomáš Kováč
adding that the transport company is dealing with the situation
Some trains were temporarily cancelled especially for the Senec – Bratislava-Petržalka
Nové Zámky – Bratislava
Malacky – Bratislava and Bratislava – Trnava routes
Kováč noted that ZSSK keenly feels the lack of engine drivers
conductors and servicemen in the long term
90 candidates training to become engine drivers could not finish the course,” the spokesperson said
“About the same number of the engine drivers have to be replaced every year because of retirement or another reason.”
ZSSK lacks about 100 to 135 engine drivers
ZSSK's position on the railway labour market is influenced by the concentration of private railway carriers who often offer work to young train drivers as soon as they leave the course
They usually choose to work for the carrier in the Czech Republic
It takes about 15 to 18 months to train them
They need a medical check to get permission to lead trains and must learn the obligatory knowledge of the concrete route
ZSSK believes that the situation with train drivers will be resolved soon
Kováč clarified that the cancelled trains provide reinforced suburban transport
the cancellation of which will bring the least problems in securing transport in the region
mostly passenger trains on the routes Bratislava - Malacky
so it is possible to use the trains that remained in the schedule," he emphasised
will be presented at the Gulfood 2019 World Expo in Dubai
Nové Zámky will produce baby food for Muslim consumers
with all production being exported to European and Arab markets
The project arises from an initiative of the company Novea Group from Luxembourg
which will collaborate with Slovak company Novofruct SK
The production will take place at the existing Novofruct SK plant in Nové Zámky (Nitra Region)
with the company securing certified production
“We are very pleased to find a production partner in Slovakia with the high-quality technology and high production standards that our production requires,” said Jana Gregorová of Novea Group
“I hope that we will be able to start production of fruit and vegetable puree under our own Neyla brand in a relatively short space of time
which will later be followed by meat products.”
will be presented as part of the Slovak exposition at the Gulfood 2019 World Expo
“Recipes have already been designed and tested
and altogether eighteen products of different compositions and flavours will be presented to customers at the Dubai Fair,” Gregorová added
Just 24 hours before the Steelers take to the ice against Berlin in the Round of 16 in the Champions Hockey League
Aaron Fox has confirmed the signing of 24 year forward Maxim Golod
Golod has been playing in Slovakia for HC Nove Zamky this season after a successful first year in Europe with Nybro Vikings in the Swedish Allsvenskan
Fox said “Maxim will come in and inject some immediate energy into our group
“He is coming off a solid 1st year in Europe last year between the Allsvenskan and IceHL
“Maxim is a very dynamic skater that should really cause problems in our league especially with how fast we would like to play
He can make plays under pressure and wants to be in a winning environment
“Speaking with him I can see he’s very excited to get started and help us compete for trophies
“Maxim skated for the 1st time today and will be in the lineup tomorrow night against Berlin”

Taktiež bolo Československu uložené čo najskôr vyriešiť otázku maďarskej a poľskej menšiny
Slovensko stratilo Petržalku a Devín (43 km2
Preto bolo cieľom vtedajšej centrálnej vlády v Prahe obnovenie predmníchovského usporiadania štátu a oklieštenie slovenskej autonómie
aby pomocou pravého krídla HSĽS rozleptávalo súdržnosť medzi Čechami a Slovenskom
Boli tu dislokované dovedna štyri letky so 40 lietadlami
letka 45 mala sedem pilotov a letka 49 iba päť pilotov
lebo medzi ňou a Čechami vznikla Slovenská republika
kým to dovoľoval postup maďarských okupačných vojsk
divízie sa nepodarilo dostať naspäť na Slovensko
odkiaľ by jej českí príslušníci pokračovali do Čiech
Československé jednotky tam neraz prichádzali do otvorených konfliktov a prestreliek s prepadovými skupinami ukrajinských nacionalistov
V prípade potreby a očakávaného prepadu vlaku mala byť obrancom poskytnutá letecká podpora
Takto mal byť vlak dodatočne chránený počas cesty do Rumunska
Maďarské vojská vytrvalo postupovali a Perečín dosiahli 17
Ich postup bol československými jednotkami neustále spomaľovaný až do 13
kedy cez slovenskú hranicu za Ubľou prešli posledné zbytky 12
Maďarské vojsko potom rýchlym postupom smerovalo na sever a toho istého dňa večer predsunuté motorizované jednotky dosiahli poľskú hranicu
Týmto sa ukončilo rozdelenie Československa
